non-existent, meaning that you feel as if you always have to be on and accessible, selling or thinking about your work. I know I did and am still working through. This issue is all about how we can slow down, yes! Slow down, find systems to support you and how to truly allow yourself to be you, within your business and find your way. I know for me I have tried so many other people’s way, hit burnout, started over again until I was ready to trust myself and my knowledge. It feels much different, and I do admit that being off social media more and more does help as I am not in the space of comparing or competing which is precisely what social media has been created to do. What do fearful, unhappy, jealous people do? CONSUME! Consumerism = MONEY, not happiness! However, that is another rabbit hole. So remember this when you feel like you haven’t done enough learning, training, marketing, selling etc., as you compare yourself to other entrepreneurs, only 7.43%[1] of the world’s population are entrepreneurs. Even though you see so many others on social media or such, it’s because you are either following like-minded people, ads are being targeted at you, and that is your mindset. Remember you are a different kettle of fish compared to the average everyday person.

JUST LIKE THE PRESSURE OF BEING A WOMAN AND MOTHER IN TODAY’S SOCIETY, THERE IS EQUALLY JUST AS MUCH PRESSURE, EXPECTATION AND JUDGEMENT OF BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR.

W

e are bombarded daily about how we should sell, hustle, and push, push, push. I believe a lot of the structures we are taught are very masculine and for many women who follow these formulas leads to burn out. This non-stop go, go, go attitude alongside being a mother, wife, lover, friend, employee and so on can be overwhelming.

The dream of having your business can feel as if you are living a life to be seen on social media and other platforms to be found. It has created customers and clients that feel they can connect with you 24/7 your boundaries can seem blurred or even

You are a part of a small percentage of the world that is on this path, and you are more knowledgeable than you think. Stop comparing, competing and being fearful of what you are creating in the world. Trust yourself, find your way and know that there are: 7, 830, 840, 338[2] people in the world. People are waiting for you. There is no rush, and you don’t’ have to be a slave to your business… relax and enjoy your life and your business!! Much love, Tam x

A mindset of effortlessness

AS YOU LEARN HOW TO LEAD IN YOUR BUSINESS YOU ARE FACED WITH MANY CHALLENGES AND CHOICES, EXPERIENCES AND LEARNINGS. BELIEVING IT HAS TO BE HARD IF YOU’RE GOING TO BE A SUCCESS IS SO COMMON. FALLING INTO THE TRAP OF DO MORE TO ACHIEVE MORE IS A PATTERN TO BREAK AS SOON AS YOU CAN.

T

he trials of this year have made it a tougher one than anyone imagined. I have seen an increase in hustle** and a decrease in the belief things can be easier. I have seen a scramble to do more to be more visible. I have seen the word pivot taken waaaay to far as you’ve woven in and out of ideas and launches and any way you can to make money. You are juggling a busy life, family, work, business, a whole list of competing and demanding priorities, so it’s ok if things have felt HARD. They’ve probably felt anything from frustrating to near impossible and every erratic emotion between. How do you keep going forward when there are literal and perceived obstacles that keep poking their tongue out and saying, “just when you thought it was easier, I’m back to shake things up!” You may have noticed the words literal and perceived in relation to obstacles. You might feel like there is some universal undercurrent conspiring to get in the way of your forward momentum. You might, as I have done at times this year, looked upwards and declared “come on Universe, help me here!” You might feel like you’ve been doing a good job at supporting yourself. But have you let old habits, patterns and beliefs creep back in? Have 8

| MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT

you fallen out of sync with mindset practices that support you to be your best self? How much of the tough parts of the year have been driven by your beliefs, emotions and past experiences? How much is driven by what others are telling you could, would or will happen? How much of your reality is steeped in a mindset that isn’t helpful? Important questions to ask at any time. As we reflect on 2020 and prepare for a different reality in 2021

this is an ideal time to embrace a mindset of effortlessness. You say you want to achieve certain things in life, want to contribute positively to the world, want to be a useful human, a creative being, trust your intuition and lead a business you adore. You want to earn great money, have time to do things with the people you love, have hobbies and time away from business. You want to be adventurous, curious, connected and abundant. You want to be rewarded with incredible opportunities and oodles of goodness. You want ease. You can have it. It starts with a choice. YOU can choose for things to be easier.

Afformations for a Mindset of Effortlessness How can this be easier? What if there was infinite effortlessness available to me in every moment? Imagine if there was an easier path to bring my dreams to life? What if making money was easier moving forward? How abundant would it feel if ideal clients were magnetised to me easily? What if increasing effortlessness was just how I did things?

I start my days with my effortless success rituals. A series of practices to help me feel expanded, they’re different most days, depending on what feels best in the moment. Without fail I include afformations to guide my mindset to a state of effortlessness. Every time I say an afformation aloud, use it as a journal prompt, include it in a visualisation, or write it into a mandala, I’m reinforcing my choice to welcome increasing ease into my day. What’s an afformation? Unlike an affirmation, which is a statement your brain can refute, an afformation is a question and gives your creative and curious brain something to bring to life. Have a go using one or more of the suggested afformations below and begin to embed a mindset of effortlessness into your life and business.

It starts with a choice. YOU can choose for things to be easier.

What do

sex, money and fun

have to do with how much money you make? By Tammie Pike 2021 IS A UNIVERSAL 5 YEAR OF FREEDOM, BRINGING CLEARING FOR OUR THROAT (5TH) CHAKRAS. AS THEY SAY, THE BEST WAY TO PREDICT YOUR FUTURE IS TO CREATE IT. WITH THE WORLD IN CRISIS AND CAPITALISM (HEAD OVER HEART LIVING) CRUMBLING, NOW IS THE BEST TIME TO UPGRADE YOUR THINKING AROUND MONEY, ABUNDANCE AND RECEIVING.

F

or many Mumpreneurs there are common fears, blocks and limiting beliefs around money!

There can be a constant worry about not making or having enough. The stress and pressure of this can lead to overwhelm, anxiety, burnout and more. 2020 has tested many of us in mind, body and soul. As we head into 2021, I feel that it’s imperative for all of us to start with an empowered mindset, and with each of us doing the inner work rather than just writing down our New Year’s resolution, pushing ourselves too hard or hoping for the best. I was fortunate enough to come across Sarah Yip’s Change for Good -

A Spiritual Money Webinar for 11:11 Seer’s recently. If you see 11:11 or other repeating numbers make sure to head to Sarah’s website (sarahyip. com) as she gives great insight into these awakening codes and numerology. This workshop helped me see more clearly where I am stuck and what beliefs I still have surrounding money, health, sex, fun and relationships that are blocking me from experiencing more abundance and ultimately freedom. Money will be a hot topic for 2021 (and let’s be honest – it always has been, for nearly every person on this planet), and Sarah helps us to demystify money and to create more of it. It’s an activation and an invitation for you to have a different perspective on how you think and takes you to a whole new level of attracting money so you can create your own ethical prosperity and give back to the world. Sarah gives such easy to understand information, uplifting advice and easy to follow processes and practices. The class includes a 3.5 hour video, notes and 4 healing meditations. If you are ready to

10

do the groundwork to create an abundant 2021 then make sure to invest in this workshop. It can truly change your life and business. It is up to us to do this self-healing, so we can teach our children and loved ones a different way to what we have been taught or not taught, which we know doesn’t work. Whether or not you see 11:11, this workshop can really benefit you, if you are willing to have an open mind and heart and are willing to expand your consciousness to reap the benefits. You will find that you will have a more relaxed relationship with money, leading to more synchronicity, opportunities and flow in your life, which will also benefit those around you.

Sarah’s mission is to transform the public’s perception of psychics and their own intuition, from scepticism to trust. Who is Sarah Yip, The Numbers Queen? She has read for 4000+ people and made over $500K from helping people find their life purpose. Sarah’s mission is to transform the public’s perception of psychics and their own intuition, from scepticism to trust. Sarah has read for many famous people and business leaders (as well as other unsung heroes who

A New Way to

Here is a condensed version of my 4 steps to setting goals differently in 2021:

1 Set Goals in

2021

Discover and explore your limiting beliefs and past goal setting experiences. This will ultimately contribute to your mindset moving forward. Limiting beliefs are thoughts or opinions we believe to be true. They are old patterns or stories about our life that no longer serve us. These beliefs will stop you challenging yourself.

By Hayley Golledge

ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO PIVOT INTO 2021 AND BREAK FREE OF THE DAILY GRIND IS TO SET SOME GOALS. SETTING GOALS WILL HELP YOU PLAN YOUR ESCAPE WITH SOMETHING AMAZING AND INSPIRING THAT REALLY SPEAKS TO YOUR SOUL.

A

lot of people struggle with setting goals. It can often be easier letting our lives slip into survival mode. We just do enough to get by and make a living instead of designing and living a life that we absolutely love. Some people may not be able to tell you what their goals are. Other people may give vague or grand answers with no connection to what they really want deep inside. They may say things like, “I want to be rich”, “I want a big house.” or “I just want to be happy”. We should be asking ourselves what does that even mean? And what would that actually look like? Goal setting is an extremely powerful tool for accomplishing and bringing together our life’s vision. MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT |

Hayley Gollege

2 3

Define and get clear about what you really want your life to look and feel like in the coming year. List out everything you want for yourself—don’t over think it and don’t censor or limit what comes out on the page. Then narrow them down to no more than 6 big amazing goals for the year. Tune in with your ‘why’ for each goal. Most people think that the next logical step after defining their goals is to work out the ‘how’. The biggest thing missing when setting goals is the ‘why’. Our why is often rooted in the emotional realm and is what will keep you getting out of bed each day. It is what keeps you focused when moving through challenging times. It is the difference between being inspired and drawn towards your goals and that of trudging or pushing yourself towards your goals each day. If you aren’t feeling inspired by your goal, chances are it’s either not your true goal for example it may be somebody else’s or it is one you feel you ‘should’ have. Choose a goal that makes your heart sing. 14

| MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT

4

Design a plan that works for you. What skills and knowledge do you already have and what might you need to learn to be able to reach your goal? What obstacles do you envisage may pop up along your journey? This can help you to be better prepared. Who can help you? You don’t have to travel the road alone to achieving your goals. To give yourself the best possible chance of success, review your goals daily. In particular you should tune into how you want to feel and your ‘why’. One of the biggest differences between people who achieve their amazing goals and those who don’t, is they review them daily. They let their goals inspire them each and every day. Setting goals is hard work—that is why a lot of people let it slide. Remember though you are always worthy of the time and energy you invest in yourself. What amazing goals are you setting for yourself in 2021? And what is the one small step you can take towards one of your goals today?

SH T! MUMPRENEUR EDITOR, TAMMIE PIKE, HAS A HEART-TOHEART WITH ERIKA CRAMER, THE INSPIRING AUTHOR OF CONFIDENCE FEELS LIKE SHIT! ERIKA, A NOTABLE FORCE IN THE SELF-DEVELOPMENT WORLD, KNOWN AS THE QUEEN OF CONFIDENCE, IS A CONFIDENCE-COACH AND POPULAR PODCAST HOST. HER PERSONAL LEGACY LIFTS OTHERS TO HEIGHTS AS SHE, HERSELF LEADS BY HER OWN LIFE-STORY … ONE OF TRIUMPHING OVER TRAUMA. MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT |

15

T

he first time I laid eyes on Erika Cramer was at the AusMumpreneur Awards in 2019. She came in and everyone took notice as she took centre stage with her energy, looks and words. Here in front of me was a vivacious woman, who’s words were as colourful and illuminating as her bright orange dress! She had my attention as well as everyone else’s in the room instantly. This beautiful, nononsense Goddess looked us directly in the eye, as she reassured us that we are enough and that we are capable of doing fucking anything! Recently Erika and I had a chance to delve deeper into her philosophies around life, business and motherhood as a rising entrepreneur and influencer. Erika, who is also a mum and wife, has not had an easy journey. Growing up with a mother suffering a mental illness; living in foster care; losing her husband; being sexually abused and experiencing a miscarriage, were the diversity and traumas she has had to alchemise along her own hard-earned personal transformation journey. She has turned these adversities into the personal wisdom and understanding which enable Erika to create such a strong and safe container for the women she works with today.

Erika is vocal about creating change for women and this passion seeps from every post, podcast and platform through which she shares her magic. It’s not just about confidence coaching in Erika’s work either. Erika focuses holistically on all parts of a woman, allowing her to love and honour what makes her uniquely her. As we discussed life, motherhood and business during our conversation, it was easy to see why this deep and beautiful woman is loved by many worldwide. She has risen like the proverbial Phoenix from the ashes, working her Puerto Rican butt off to get where she is today. Erika is not an overnight success which she openly shares. She has spent years doing the inner and outer work, hustling and creating her brand and business to be what it is today. Erika shared her 7 Key Insights to her success with Mumpreneur, so we too can become the confident, sensual and successful woman we rightfully are:

1. You are what you say You are what you say. Erika shares, “We have to be really careful how we jokingly talk about ourselves …” Further she explains, “I used to always say, I’m just a … Puerto

Rican, a ghetto-chick and I don’t have any money … I’m bad with money and forever I was bad with money. Her point being: think before you speak-yourself-down to others or yourself! Do not reaffirm verbally what you no longer want to do or be like.

2. Serve and business will follow Even though Erika didn’t know how to create financial or business success when she first arrived in Australia with her husband, she did know how to serve. Erika elaborated, “To me, business and sales is service”. Her desire to serve always led the way in her now blossoming business. “I know how to serve; I know how to support; I know how to give. And I was like, I’m going to give as much as I can and not ask for shit back because I know that I love realness … So, I never was like, ‘I’m going to get this if I do this’.” This is the new way of business. Erika knows that money is a side effect of the work that she does and the women that she supports.

3. Imperfect Action Erika is all about imperfect action and not having to do anything perfectly, whether in life, motherhood or business. Even her popular podcast (downloaded over 80,000 times), is not done in a professional studio. Some of her most engaging podcasts are done from her car! Erika says her style is intuitive and authentic. When something comes to her, she is going to talk about it regardless of where she is. “Sometimes we have to plan, but it’s nice to be in your flow … then you take people with you on your life journey in the moment, you know?”

4. Valuing and pricing your services Her now 6-figure business is creating a life for Erika and her family that she adores. It wasn’t always easy for Erika to charge money for her services, which is so common amongst women in business. Erika 16

| MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT

They [public] need to know you, like you and trust you. If you’re hidden behind a logo, you’re not going to be able to reach the human spirit.

passionately stated that when it comes to the saying Charge your worth, she doesn’t always agree with that message. “I mean, you’re worth trillions. There’s no number of what you are worth, my love.” Erika says to start low and to listen to your gut when pricing your services. With all of her new products and services, she starts low and then as she sees the response from her clients, her prices change accordingly.

5. Showing Up, Stop Being Vanilla! Erika believes that the biggest thing holding women back is thinking we are not enough. Thinking we need to be like other women in business or on social media, which stops us from showing who we truly are. Through all of Erika’s life’s experiences from sexual abuse to losing a partner, she has learned that we change each and every day. We are ever-evolving. When people

judge, they are judging the version of you they think you are. It’s a projection of the other person, not the truth of who you are. Because of social media and the way business is going, there is no separation between business and personal. Erika shares, “It’s all personal. I feel like if you really want to build a business and you want to add value to anyone’s lives, they need to be able to see you.” Further that, “They [public] need to know you, like you and trust you. If you’re hidden behind a logo, you’re not going to be able to reach the human spirit.” Stop being vanilla is Erika’s sage advice!

6. Ditch the Guilt Erika believes there will be a time where you will have to do the hard work to get to where you want. It will mean juggling and not being the perfect mother. Instead, it will involve finding what you are willing to do, and then making sacrifices initially in order to manifest your vision into reality. You must let go of the guilt. Erika shares how some days she was working so hard building her brand, on the phone all week … that she didn’t get to do all the ‘motherly things’ expected of her. Instead, Erika and her family got by with takeaways and having her partner take on more at home. Focusing on the future she was creating for her family, Erika had to let go of her guilt. Now she only works three days a week and spends the rest of her time with her family. Choose to shift your perspective around guilt, and it will no longer be there to experience.

7. Find your way The amount of courses, programs and products to help you sell and market your business out there is simply overwhelming. Easily we’re confused about what technology or platforms to use. For Erika 18

I call confidence a practice. I think it’s a practice like meditation. You don’t ever reach meditated, you know? I don’t think anybody is confident. I feel like they have moments where they feel confident.

kitchen table, Erika conceptualised a book that would disabuse women of the pressure to constantly feel more confident as she listened to the sound of Moana on repeat (not by choice!).

She shares that the cause of her growing success is due to crazy innovative ideas that come to her and are always connected to service. Her business and structure changed when she asked herself how she could “be with that woman more? How can I help her more?” Especially during COVID, as her in-person events were postponed, she had to find innovative ways to serve her community.

“We think we need to be confident and if you were more confident, everything will be better. [The message out there is] ‘Confidence is amazing! You should be more self-confident!’ like it’s the gold star. And when I look at confidence … we have to be willing to go through some really full-on emotions to get to confidence. Are you willing to experience shame, guilt, getting it wrong, people judging you, falling down publicly in front of people, failing, failing, failing, making mistakes, messing up, not being there for your kids when you needed to be, doing work alone, being lonely? Okay, cool. If you can do all that, you will get confidence because you don’t get to get to confidence without moving through some really hard feelings.”

Erika simplifies, “… you just have to go into your intuition and go: ‘Does that feel good for me?’ And if it feels yucky, then don’t do it, you know?” Confidence Feels Like Shit! - The truth about confidence and what it really takes to create. The title of her book is based on a podcast Erika did in the early days of her business. During COVID, the idea to create this book was sparked. Sitting in her 70s-style chair, at her

She shares how willing you have to be to get to where you want to go, “… you have to be willing to royally

fuck up publicly all the time. You have to be willing for your mum and dad not to be proud of you. You have to be willing for your husband to think you’re psycho and crazy, or your kids to say you’re a workaholic, or whatever it is … in order to then do this thing.” Erika finally closes with words on confidence, “I call confidence a practice. I think it’s a practice like meditation. You don’t ever reach meditated, you know? I don’t think anybody is confident. I feel like they have moments where they feel confident.” Even with the writing and publishing of her book, Erika has had to delve into all the feelings that came up for her, such as self-doubt and the dreaded Who am I? we all know so well. However, she is the Queen of Confidence for a reason. She overcame her doubts and has released her book to the world, and we here at the Mumpreneur Movement can’t wait to see the ripple it creates! “You don’t feel ‘confident’ when you’re creating confidence.” - Erika Cramer MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT |

Change Lives?

Do Retreats Really

By Tammie Kip DO YOU EVER JUST WAKE UP WITH A SENSE OF EXCITEMENT ABOUT LIFE? GRATEFUL FOR ALL THE EXPERIENCES YOU’VE HAD AND ALL THE POSSIBILITIES THAT LAY AHEAD?

overwhelmed with excitement and wanting to fill my bag with as many lollys as possible! It didn’t take long for me to take the plunge and utter the words – sign me up! I was traveling solo so opted to be paired with a roommate to share in this journey. My roomie and I connected prior to departure and we immediately bonded at a heart level. In fact, the whole time we were there, people kept asking if we were sisters and others just assumed we were life-long friends. We didn’t know each other before, but we are certainly connected for life now, which I am truly grateful for. Every day was filled with new experiences, learnings and emotional release. From starting each day at sunrise with yoga on the beach or chi running to the point, both of which were led by incredible instructors Kim Dashiell Danz and Sarah Richardson, to ending the day with champagne sunsets and entertainment including traditional Fijian ceremonies, magic show, talent night, karaoke and dancing and laughing the night away. I would love to share every detail of each and every moment with you but obviously, that’s not feasible, so

ave you danced your way through the day contemplating the amazing things you are going to do, the places you’re going to explore, the fears you are about to conquer, the boundaries you are going to test and the memories that you have yet to make?

Welcome to my life since arriving home from the Ultimate Girls Week Away #UGWA2020 in Fiji earlier this year – Celebrating “we don’t have to be good girls to be good people”. In late December, I saw a Facebook post boasting the “Ultimate Girls Week Away” in Fiji – February 2020 featuring keynote Speaker, Elizabeth Gilbert, author of many fabulous books including Eat Pray Love, City of Girls and Big Magic. I checked out the site and was in awe of the line-up of facilitators, panel discussions, keynotes and entertainment. I felt like a kid in a candy store – hopped up on sugar, MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT |

instead I will share some of my key insights, as I do…..

Take your shadow and put it into the light During the workshop with my friend Liz, (I feel like we are friends now since we spent an intimate week together on a remote Fijian island) she had us write a number of letters to ourselves. One of those letters was from our fear and it started like this; Dear Tammie, I am your fear and this is what I want to tell you. I am afraid of …. From here, the fear took over and shared all of the things she is afraid of. My role was simply to listen. I did not console fear, I did not tell fear that everything was going to be ok or that the things fear was afraid of were trivial, silly or unwarranted. I just sat and listened as fear expressed herself. When she was done, the letter from fear was read aloud to a complete stranger. It was one of the most liberating moments of my week. Unburdening myself with all the fears that I had silently tucked away for years and bringing them into the light so I can face them and stop letting them interfere with my enchantment (which is all the things I love to do).

Stop pressuring yourself to find your purpose This lesson actually started as I read Liz’s book “Big Magic” and it crystalized during her workshop. I have done a lot of work over the years trying to figure out and articulate my “why”. In fact, it’s something I write about in my own book – Your Extraordinary Self. I whole-heartedly believe in the concept of bringing more of what you love to do into your life, but I always struggled with my “why”. Why do I exist, what is my purpose? Man, those big questions come with a lot of pressure! Over the years, I had somehow ingrained the notion of adding value to others as my reason for being, and although I love people, helping and doing for others, this session helped me realize that our reason for being is to add more enchantment to our own lives. It is not about one life-altering 22

| MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT

purpose or vision, unless of course you are Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King Jr or the likes of them, which clearly I am not. It’s about giving yourself permission to bring more enchantment (happiness) into your life. Going through the enchantment exercise was a life changer for me because one of my greatest fears revolved around not being able to figure out what I was put on this earth to do. Imagine how freeing to hear that I don’t need to figure that out at all! In fact, I’m doing everything I’m supposed to be doing right now and as I continue to evolve, grow and add more enchantment to my life, I have faith that the universe will continue to guide me in the direction I need to go if I listen closely enough. And hey, if I happen to help a few people along the way, that’s pretty cool too!

Love, Love and More Love Love, love and more love. The beautiful Kerryn Slater whispered these words into my ear while she held me as I cried following a very emotional release. Love, love and more love is what I felt as Joy Fairhall guided me through a magical Reiki healing session and engulfed me in one of her “Joy” hugs as only she could do. Love love and more love is what I experienced while sipping champagne in the ocean watching the sunset illuminate the sky with my new besties, Coleen, Sammi and Karen. Love love and more love travelled through the Fijian breeze as women from all over the world came together to celebrate themselves, each other and the power of women everywhere. Love, love and more love is what I saw in Romany’s eyes as she shared her story of magic and life with the beautiful souls in the room. Love love and more love is what sprang from the stage when Melanie Midegs, Diane Divone and Kate Kazony shared their deeply sacred stories of sex, love and relationships. Love, love and more love is what emanated from my soul as I wrote about all of my insecurities to “love” and what it felt like when love wrote me back. Love, love and more love is what will guide me in my life from this day forward. As I reflect on this experience, the number one thing that comes to

mind is that I encountered some of the most extraordinary women I have ever met in my life during this retreat. Master healers, spiritual goddesses and genuinely beautiful souls. Life-long friendships formed, deep-rooted fears faced, old scars healed, emotions released and a new relationship with love has evolved. When I returned to work, exhausted from the 27-hour travel and jet-lagged from the 17-hour time change, my boss said, “Whatever you did, it worked. You look different, not just relaxed or de-stressed but like a walking advertisement for why we should all take time for ourselves”. Truer words have never been spoken. So – do retreats really change lives? Well, this one certainly did mine. In my view, as long as you are open to learning, growing and even more importantly, letting go of what you think you know, open yourself to vulnerability and leave your judgment at the gate, then opportunities for transformation will present themselves in the most beautiful ways and in the wildest of places. If after reading this you’re suffering from a little FOMO (fear of missing out), don’t worry – you can catch the next UGWA in Lorne, Victoria in March 2021, hosted by one of the most extraordinary women I know, Liesel Albrecht. Brush the self-sabotaging stuff aside, a bit at a time

Over the passing of time, it bore more power too, acne, puberty, relationship fails, and later miscarriages fuelled my poor selfimage further. I think it would be fair to say that I fell out with myself and felt the same disgust that ‘Mr Popular’ had perceived.

THERE I AM AGED 12, STOOD IN THE GYM AT OUR SCHOOLS’ ANNUAL CHRISTMAS COUNTRY DANCING AFTERNOON...YES YOU HEARD RIGHT. THE USUAL SCENARIO OF GIRLS ONE SIDE AND BOYS THE OTHER IN WHICH THE POPULAR LOTHARIOS GET TO STRUT THEIR CONFIDENCE AND CHOOSE THEIR BOTTLE GREEN CLAD DAMSEL IN A PENCIL SKIRT.

I

was usually one of the stragglers at the end, awkwardly looking at her shoes and awaiting the nod of acceptance from any one of the remaining boys. This ceremony felt like a rite of passage despite the fact it was inevitable that at some point, paths would cross with the higher ranks. It wasn’t until I’d realised the music had stopped abruptly, halfway through a ‘dosey-doe’, that I had landed face to face, mid hand clasp, with ‘Mr Popularity’ himself… gulp. In that vacuum of silence that quickly followed, I felt him drop my hands and saw him step away with a look of disgust like he’d touched a corpse. To which he then turned to his surrounding audience and retorted that it would be best “not to get too close (to me) in case he caught” and I quote “ugly disease”. All I heard after that was the laughter, which somehow made an otherwise flippant remark before, now become something concrete and truthful. I was obviously ugly! One stupid comment from one moron took my spark that day and a new nemesis was born. the negative belief that I was “flawed” and therefore, not valuable, or acceptable to my peers. Boom! whether in a personal or career capacity. leave with my second child, that I now realise, gave me the time for true reflection. I needed to start dealing with those negative voices in my head and tell them to shut the hell up and sit down because I was tired of it. I decided not to return to my job in Civil Engineering and took the decision to do something for me.

I soul searched and thought about the things that inspired me, my strengths and the things that made me happy, which were colour, fashion, and psychology (I have a BA Hons in Applied Social Science) and decided that I was going to use these passions and skill sets to build my own confidence. If I could learn how to accept and embrace myself as a whole person, in mind and body, then maybe I could teach others.

So, in my spare time and over the course of a few years, I became a qualified Image Consultant and went on to set up The Image Tree back in 2013. I built my own website, attended courses, and learned to blog, use social media, and got myself out there by joining networking groups.

Through listening and being patient with myself, being brave with new opportunities and meeting fabulous people, I nurtured my confidence and empowered myself. I now co-run a Wellbeing Inspiration Network for women, often appear on BBC Radio and get to collaborate with other heart centred businesses, work with inspiring clients and have even won awards. I have since added NLP to my skill set so that I can provide a Coaching string to aid Positive Mind-set further and provide the holistic top to toe, inside and out services to any woman who struggles with their own image and confidence journey,

I’m the only one who can get it done. Even as our business grew and we hired help, “that’s fine I’ll do it” was part of my daily vocabulary. For years my work life has been tied to anxiety, hustle, a never ending hamster wheel. I didn’t take time off and work was always on my mind. Time for myself was not a priority. Of course, that led to nothing good: burnout and revenue cap. There was only one of me and when I couldn’t take care of everything anymore, things fell apart. I lost my clients, I lost connections, and I lost money. I found myself stuck, in debt and with no clear plan on how to fix it. Finally, my ego took the biggest hit. After all, I considered myself an entrepreneur, capable of doing anything yet here I was. Failing. So, I did what any self respected entrepreneur would do. I accepted this stage of failure in my grand entrepreneurial journey and went back to work. I found a job that I loved with a team I respected. At this point I had nothing else to prove to anyone or myself anymore. I put my head down

s entrepreneurs we most often talk about net worth in the language of dollars: in the bank, in assets, in clients, in units sold. We attach our entrepreneurial self worth and identity to dollar figures and as a result, we are willing to trade so much in the pursuit of more money: time, peace of mind, nutrition, health and wellness. We work, we grind, and we hustle because we want to create more, deliver more, earn more. We don’t stop because stopping means less money and less money means less success. But what if contradictorily, less time spent on chasing money can increase our net worth? I started working for myself four years ago, at the age of 26. I joined my partner’s online store and in tandem we started a small marketing agency together. I was excited, eager, very entitled and of course, a knowit-all. I was a stubborn perfectionist, always wanting to do everything myself, refusing help and thinking MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT |

and worked hard. I finally gained financial security and once that happened, things started looking up at a different level. Having an income to secure daily expenses meant I freed up my mental space. That’s when my partner and I came up with an e-commerce brand idea that changed our, and many others’ lives. We’ve had many ideas before, some were successful, many failed. This time was different. This time, we have freed up mental space to create, breathe and take our time. As with any business, the grind started again - but this time I stopped myself before the rabbit hole. The moment we saw growth we decided to keep our jobs for a while, not only so we can reinvest our profits but also to hire for the role that started taking out a huge chunk of my time: customer support. It was so uncomfortable. Me, a sales expert with extensive experience in dealing with people hiring out for customer support? How could someone represent my business better than I can? It turns out I’m not the best at everything, not even in my own business. When we started hiring for 26

the roles that others have expertise in and we kept our focus on the things nobody else could do in our business, my partner and I ended up with a team so committed to success that not only our new ecommerce store turned into a 7 figure business within the year, but our success story case study brought us 6 new clients for our marketing agency in the middle of a pandemic. When we freed up the mental space, we thrived. In the summer of 2020 we brought our marketing agency more revenue than ever before. My partner and I realized that we had to focus on just two things: our unique skills to help our customers grow and revenue generation. Everything else in both our store and agency, is now handled by a team of amazing people who do their jobs better than I ever could and because of that, we will all continue to create more, deliver more, earn more. Never before have I had the chance to sip my coffee in peace every morning and feel comfortable to take a day completely off. It’s a great feeling at a small initial monetary and mental investment that yields a huge return long term.

Let’s Get

Personal,

it’s 2021! By Sue Prentice @thesueprentice @beyondpoints

YOU’VE SEALED YOUR GOALS AND DREAMS FOR THE YEAR NOW IT’S TIME TO EXPLORE HOW LEVERAGING MARKETING AUTOMATION CAN HELP DOMINATE YOUR BRAND AND BEAT YOUR COMPETITION ONLINE!

M

arketing automations helps you create more time every day.

As a global connector, eCommerce expert, author and mindset ambassador with over 25 years experience in business, I believe we’re entering a highly competitive environment where people’s buying behaviour has truly shifted, entrepreneurs and “wannapreneurs” have their sights set high in the online space. Never before has it been more important to truly understand WHO it is you want to attract and HOW to personally relate to your ideal audience. eCommerce growth and the technology driving it is moving so fast it’s hard to keep up with. 20%

more domains were registered in the pandemic and the eCommerce penetration realised is equivalent to 10 years growth that happened in just 3 months in the US, a trend experienced globally in most developed countries. The phenomenal chart below demonstrates the shift. Let’s reflect but only for a moment on last year, without mentioning the dreaded ‘C’ovid word. A period in time interestingly, where many new and reformed businesses flourished, but sadly, not all of them! Our boutique agency helped a number of brands creatively engineer their online transformation, a truly gratifying experience. Many others were forced to close up shop, feeling lost with no way to reach their customers.

So, what was the big difference that enabled some businesses to make the switch so successfully in some cases, break records with their online sales? Being able to reach a customer anytime, anywhere was a key factor to business agility evident during lockdown. In addition, knowing HOW to communicate in a meaningful way, engaging enough to drive second-tonone open rates, is the other. For some businesses all they had was an email list, for others they had no customer records at all. Those who cultivate customer relationships and work on delivering a personalised brand experience are heard. A personalised brand experience can be many things but it’s essentially knowing your customer preferences and serving them up valuable content at the right time, presenting offers that make sense on products you know are relevant to that individual’s preferences. When a customer has a great brand experience and feels personally acknowledged, a deeper connection is sparked that grows loyalty and trust. They remember you! Simply owning an email list today is not enough. If there is no ongoing value, the contact grows cold and the brand is forgotten. Much like human relationships, customers need brand love. Embracing the right technology in an ecosystem that offers the ability to drive instant automated conversations is a key strategy for brands to grow deeper, more meaningful interactions and foster trust in order to keep those customers returning to buy again. When done right, the result is greater control and business stability, offering confidence and predictable business growth. Automating conversations can be used to handle repetitive tasks, customer service, FAQ’s, and more. Consider naturally leading people into chat from email, packaging, website and visaversa, inviting them to re-engage in a contextual, meaningful way that feeds into your CRM helping grow your tribe of fans over time. Eventually using this strategy empowers smart decisions based on real data, removing any guess work and relieving anxiety when it comes to growth. MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT |

If that sounds hard don’t be put off. What used to be available for big brands and big budgets is now available for start-ups and SME’s. Now easier than ever thanks to the evolution of tech, everyone can benefit. Messenger Marketing is not limited to Facebook Messenger. Proudly over a coffee, I helped Mike Yang, CEO of Manychat, coin the term ‘Chat Marketing’, a form of marketing adopted by the world’s biggest ecosystem today driving automated conversations. I recommend having a look at Manychat. It’s a chat ecosystem that integrates SMS, chat messaging across Facebook and its family of apps such as Instagram and WhatsApp and yes, email. More than 1.8 million businesses in 190 countries are using chat automations to drive sales. Messaging channels are powerful because they are ‘always open’ channels which means you can reach your customer where they like to engage. Don’t just take my word for it. Crazy Egg reports connecting with a prospect with 3 follow up messages increases conversions by 328%. Companies using advanced personalization report a $20 return for every $1 spent according to a report from Clicks in 2019. Start thinking about your unique message that could make a more memorable shopping experience driving people to come back. Choose your style and personality as you engage i.e. will it be serious or playful interactions. Stop manually responding when you roll over first thing each day to check your messages be it on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, SMS, Twitter or LinkedIn.

Automate! Save time. Grow customers! The potential is huge and about to get more exciting. For one of our clients Messenger consistently brings an average of 80% of their online store sales.

2021 will see many changes and the exciting development of browser-based solutions that are not platform dependent. The key to future proofing your marketing is remembering omnichannel is vital and chat marketing is a high converting strategy people choose to like. Get started today a simple action plan. Here are 5 ways to get started. 1 Sign up with a free Manychat account. Pro Accounts are cheap and give you so much more customisation ability. 2 Play by the Policy rules, to avoid your account shut down. Especially the new EU privacy rules that affect Messenger. As of December 16, 2020, several Messenger API features will no longer be available for developers and businesses in Europe, and for people in Europe who connect with businesses on Messenger and Instagram globally. 3 Create a REF URL to use on your social media posts and bio’s that leads to a personalised and instant response that even has a website link to a valuable offer. 4 Create a comment growth tool and use it for all your Live videos and post so people who comment get an instant response from YOU an offer or a freebie. Make sure you offer value to be able to ask for email or phone to build your database. 5 Create a QR code for your screensaver, printed material and drive people into your bot Your first action is to consider how you can answer the questions your customers are asking. Then set up your first chatbot automation and watch the conversations grow. *Steps 3-5 have restrictions in the EU and more advanced strategy is required.

10 reasons Automation is a must below:

A U T O M A T I O N

– Automation is for every business no matter what size or stage, the sooner the better. – Undeniably most people think it’s some one’s tech expert needed to make it happen – Time is gained with automation because you’re having one to many conversations at once – Outstanding open and read rates – the stats are everywhere. – Magic starts happening, marketing is more fun! – Artificial intelligence comes into play but guess what, you can make it happen if you read on! – Traction in your business is the result – Instant responsiveness grows trust and proven to convert – Overall you have everything to gain, grow trust, grow sales, grow your list – No, there’s no going back once you’ve had a taste!

All that’s left is to ignite your conversation starters and let your bot do the talking! 28

Marketing Tactics

That Will Stand The Test Of Time

By Sian Yewdall WHEN YOU’RE ON A MISSION TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS AND MAKE AN IMPACT, THE AMOUNT OF INFORMATION AVAILABLE ONLINE FOR MARKETING YOUR BUSINESS CAN BE CONFUSING, PARALYSING AND PLAIN EXHAUSTING.

H

ow will you know if those tools and tips you read online will even work for your business?

developing a VIP program or an Advanced offer for those who love working with you and ready to step up to the next level.

I don’t know your business, your goals or what you’ve already tried, but I do know there are three essential marketing tactics every company I’ve ever worked for has used over and over again because they have shown to stand the test of time.

2. Give Value For Free

You can incorporate them too. In fact, I recommend it!

1. A Customer Retention Strategy If you are spending a boat load of time hustling for new customers, you could be missing out on money already on the table. In other words, it’s actually more cost effective and beneficial to set up customer retention strategies that see former or current clients returning. This marketing tactic is one of the most influential for both big and small companies because you have proven your abilities, developed relationships and shown that you get results. So instead of always looking for new clients, think about ways you can package up your services to work with your clients again. Consider

In 1946, the beauty brand Estee Lauder introduced the concept of offering customers a ‘free gift with purchase’. The bold marketing move worked as Sak’s Fifth Avenue sold out of Estee Lauder products in two days and this tactic went on to become one of the most used strategies around the world. In today’s digital landscape, the modern method is to offer a free optin (i.e. Lead Magnet) in return for an email address, however the intention is exactly the same. Offer your customers something they will find valuable for free in exchange for their email address to gain permission to communicate with them about your products and services. My rule of thumb is offering prospects a taste-test that equates to approximately 20% of your signature program or package. That way they genuinely feel like they are getting something for nothing and you’re not out of pocket or giving away all your best advice free.

3. Share Heart-Driven Stories Whenever I’ve been assigned to create a PR campaign for a business that doesn’t have any newsworthy MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT |

events or activities to pitch to media, creating a story to tell is always the default tactic up my sleeve to secure media coverage and sell their goods. Story telling is one of the most powerful and transformative communication and engagement strategies you can have in your marketing toolkit. Why? It creates connections, gives your audience something to believe in and establishes a solid foundation for your brand to stand on. Not only that, but your story is unique to you and shows the real heart and soul behind your business.

What kind of stories should you share? Answer these three questions over and over again:

1 2 3

Why did you start your business and what’s the legacy you wish to leave behind? What was the catalyst moment that impacted you to start your business? What do you really do… What is the transformation and incredible results you help clients achieve?

Self-Knowledge Is A

Super Power By Tammie Pike DO YOU BELIEVE KNOWLEDGE IS POWER? I DO, AND I AM EVEN A BIGGER BELIEVER THAT SELF-KNOWLEDGE IS A SUPERPOWER!

M

ost of my life, I have struggled to feel like I ‘fit’ in, in any structure, group, community etc. I also have struggled with accepting my ever-changing self and the need to explore and do things that many others don’t. Which, I have learned why since working with Shannon and the Thrive Factor, and you can find out in the session recording below. I met Shannon (Creator of Thrive Factor, which I’ll share more on that

in a minute) in February this year when we were both facilitators at the Ultimate Girls Week Away Retreat with the amazing New York Times Best-Selling Author Elizabeth Gilbert. I had seen bits and pieces of her work online through our facilitator’s group, and it intrigued me. It was incredible to listen to Shannon explain her work and how, as women, we can find our Effortless Success Zone when we find the space where our energy is abundant. When

you feel you could do what you are immersed in forever, that is your Effortless Success Zone. I sat up straighter, and if they could, my ears would have been stretching forward, so I didn’t miss a thing. When in your Effortless Success Zone everything feels easier, your motivation is high, and your to-do list gets ticked off ferociously. I have done a lot of different personality profiling, I feel the Thrive Factor takes it to the next level, especially for women. It just doesn’t cover personality traits; it’s much more profound. It covers: mindset, marketing, money and magnetism aspects of each Archetype so you can understand your strengths and weaknesses. It is an invaluable tool for selfknowledge and cultivating self-awareness to create a thriving and sustainable life and business. Shannon shares “I am all about people knowing more about themselves so they can be the best version of themselves.”

compassionate, caring, visionary, magical innovative, and so on. Shannon went on to share that the Effortless Success Zone is attainable for every woman. We only have to be ready to understand, know and accept all parts of ourselves.

If you want to become more confident, clear and powerful within your life and business check out the Thrive Factor and this incredible work Shannon has created. I recorded my session with Shannon so you could have an intimate and personal experience of seeing how profound these sessions are and what understanding it gave me. I also share how my archetypes are out of balance as I have been close to burnout, by being on the go, go, go.

To find this space, you have to understand what makes you, you. What makes you feel good and what doesn’t. What balances you and what unbalances you. What Archetype influences you and how. This is where I have found the Thrive Factor packs a punch. Though Shannon’s detailed work, she has given a structure for women to learn more about themselves in an easy yet profound way.

I hope you gain something from it and it gives you a little bit of understanding about me and what I am creating in the world and how the Thrive Factor can support you to be the best version of yourself.

I was profiled recently by Shannon, and I had so many a-ha moments. Even though

Much love, Tam x

It has created a comparative baseline, what I need to achieve, the unrealistic expectation I put on myself that I will win the first time around. Then after a night of listening to a motivational speaker talking about her fails. I thought what if we flipped the script. If we met and talked about the lows, celebrated those just like it was the wins. We flipped it, and every time we fell, we talked about it if it was the norm. What would the impact be? I’m not talking about the chatter you hear when someone wins, and only then they want to talk about the tough battle to get there. I am talking about if we genuinely met and with enthusiasm talked about falling on our arse and celebrating that. “You closed your business, wow, what a lesson and huge challenge you have gone through” spoken with the tone of pride and inspiration.

I want to celebrate the failures like they are the wins and create a culture where people are not scared to try.

Imagine if the whole conversation was real, raw and authentic and you can really talk about how you sucked at it and landed face-first into the mud and had to get back up again. Someone in your circle was happy to hear it and wanted to celebrate it with you. I think the ripple effect would be that people would try or attempt things that they thought they might fail because now there was support. I believe we would create a culture of doing instead of avoiding. We would have real conversations and talk about how it really is and be our true selves. No faking it – no mask. How freeing would it all feel? I want to celebrate the failures like they are the wins and create a culture where people are not scared to try. I failed this year, totally failed at my first draft of my book – want to celebrate with me?

MUMPRENEUR Q& A

Kate Payne HIGHER STATES OF YOGA Q. Who is Kate Payne? A mama of 2 divine little ones (boy & girl), yoga teacher, therapist and women’s health specialist and co founder of Higher States of Yoga (with my husband). Q. Please briefly explain your business Higher States of Yoga: Higher States of Yoga is Expansive Experiencing. We guide transformational experiences through the journey of Yoga, Sound and Ceremony. Guiding the curious to step into Higher States of Consciousness via yoga, meditation, pranayama & kriya. We offer classes, events, workshops & retreats & yoga teacher trainings. Q. Why was it important to you to start Higher States of Yoga?

I believe it is every woman’s birthright to experience her own greatness. To know what it feels like to be radically in tune with

the wisdom within and see the transformation that can bring into ones life. I have a set of tools (yoga, meditation etc) that make this easily accessible and wanted to be able to share that. Q. How has Yoga helped you life and in business (e.g. what have you learned as a result of practicing Yoga that you incorporate into your life or business today?) There is no separation between yoga and life for me now. Yoga has gifted me the experience of seeing the world through a new lens. One that offers me the space to respond rather than react, so I can more easily see where I need to be focusing my attention. As a result, I’m a more connected mother to my kids and a more conscious business owner.

Mama Rising LET’S IMAGINE FOR A MOMENT WE THOUGHT ABOUT THE PROCESS OF BECOMING A MOTHER COMPLETELY DIFFERENTLY. LET’S JUST PLAY A GAME OF PRETEND FOR A SECOND.

I

magine we lived in a world where women were honoured for their ability to create life. A world in which we were seen as the source of life, the creators, the ones who held the future in their hands. Imagine if we knew that in the process of becoming a mother, a woman was finally stepping into her full power: she was awakening to herself, to her ability and her strength.

Imagine she was supported to understand her baby, and then her toddler and her child, but at every milestone, she was reminded that this was a new beginning for her too. She was brought back into circle, to be given the space to reflect, to see how she was changing, and to ask herself what she needed now.

Imagine she was told it’s going to get bumpy - because all transformations must contain contrast - but she was safe. That it was part of the process. And in fact, it was the best bit. It was

And yet, she was meticulously trained and initiated into this new phase of her being. She was nurtured, taken into circle with other older mothers, and told what was coming. She was spoken to of the many paths it can take to become ‘the mother’ - the conception, the birth, the first months, the struggles, the triumphs. But she was reassured, with her hands being held and soft eyes looking into hers, that her way was the right way for her.

the part that was going to crack her open and expose her true grit and beauty. She was going to emerge from this whole, free from what she used to think was important, free from the attachment to all that she thought she was. She will be wise, and intuitive, and powerful. She will be whole. Imagine a world that looked upon what a mother does each day, as

she rocks the baby and soothes the toddler and whispers in the night to quieten frightened minds, and marvel. Celebrated her. Honoured her. Because everyone knew - there was no greater role.

Can you see that it is the very fact that no-one has ever honoured what you’re going through, reassured you that all is ok, and reminded you that you’re in the middle of one of the greatest evolutions of all?

Just imagine.

So let’s just start there.

Can you feel how much kinder you’d be on yourself? Can you see that it is actually not your fault that it feels this hard, and this dark?

Let’s start from the place of compassion. A place that acknowledges that you’ve been trying to figure this whole thing out without a single clue of what you’re

actually meant to be figuring out. It’s like you’re in the middle of a horror film, running around trying to get out, without realising that the whole thing has been made up by other people decades ago. Traditionally, we would gather in circles, surrounded by the elders, with their wisdom and understanding. We would have heard their stories of matrescence, of that beautiful season of life we were about to enter. We would have been made to feel that this was all normal, just part of the process. We would have heard stories of similar struggles, almost laughing as we finally saw the truth: that we’re all just figuring it out. And so, with the understanding that this is part of the path, we would forgive ourselves. Once the whispers of the transition to motherhood had been shared, we would know that we are no different to the women we most admire, and we would have softened. Forgiven ourselves. Lightened up about it all, and smiled at the growth we are witnessing. We would have heard our own inner voice say “It’s OK. You’re just learning.”

Or iBooks: purchase through Books app When I first heard about matrescence, I cried and cried. But then I was angry. I still am. Because after years of talking to and coaching thousands of mamas stuck in the middle of that bad dream out of their control, I can see that most of our pain comes from our judgement of ourselves. It comes from our belief that we ‘should have this figured out’. Most of the time, we think it’s the kids we need to figure out. It’s the act of mothering. If only we could get the routine right, or the food right, or

the bedtime right, we’ll nail it. Then, it will all stop being so hard, and we will be OK again. But children never stop evolving, which means the ‘problem’ we’re trying to fix never stops evolving either. And so, we never stop judging and searching. That’s why matrescence can never be about where you are in relation to where you child is - it has to be all about you. This is an extract of Mama Rising, by Amy Taylor-Kabbaz. Published by Hay House

In all cultures we have transitions, like adolescence, where we celebrate the fact that the ‘old’ you is gone, but you are becoming someone so much better. And it’s these initiations and ceremonies and handingovers of wisdom – such a beautiful process – that we have wiped from our lives as women right now. Just as we should be celebrating the start of menstruation with our young teenage girls, so too should the start of motherhood be surrounded by ritual and ceremony.

Mum Guilt Stopped Me From Being A Good Parent By Laura Fox

Mum guilt is irrational. I know this. But it doesn’t make it any less hurtful. Just because I know something isn’t necessarily true, it doesn’t stop it from hitting a nerve and making me insecure. So what can mums like me do about mum guilt? It would appear it can’t be eradicated and some level of mum guilt is normal. Accepting I will experience mum guilt has made dealing with it a lot easier. It also means I have been able to implement the following strategies.

Taking time for me. IT’S EARLY EVENING, AND MY HUSBAND HAS ENCOURAGED ME TO HAVE SOME TIME TO MYSELF. I HAVE A STRESSFUL JOB, OUR DAUGHTER IS TEETHING, AND I’M RECOVERING FROM POSTNATAL DEPRESSION. HE REASSURES ME HE WANTS TO TAKE CARE OF OUR LITTLE GIRL, AFFECTIONATELY CALLING IT “DADDY DAUGHTER TIME.”

B

ut I can’t just relax. I can’t just sit here. As much as I try, all I can see are the things I should be doing. I race around the home to get all of these jobs done. By the time I’m finished, I’m too exhausted to have any downtime. My husband has successfully got my daughter to sleep so I collapse into bed.

angry and resentful. I realised it was mum guilt and in punishing myself; I had been punishing everyone else around me.

The next day arrives, and I’m stressed as soon as I wake up. I’m snapping at my daughter, the prospect of being late to drop her off at the childminders is making my chest unbearably tight. I snap at my husband, although I didn’t catch what he said so I’m not sure why I just snapped at him.

I feel judged a lot as a mother, even when I am not being judged. I can post an innocent question about something baby-related on Facebook, then feel judged by what is actually supportive advice.

I successfully drop off my daughter at the childminders and race back home to tidy up. I’m working from home and my husband has suggested I use this time before work starts to relax. I can’t. It feels so wrong. I quickly tidy up and start my work early. Evening arrives, and it’s suggested again that I have some time to myself. I accept the offer, but I don’t use the time to relax. Because mum guilt told me I couldn’t. This was my life for months. And I couldn’t understand why I was so 40

| MUMPRENEUR MOVEMENT

This realisation created more mum guilt. What if me being so stressed out was messing up my daughter? What if her childhood memories of me are just me shouting?

Mum guilt tells me everyone else is doing better than me and if I was a good mum, I would already know these things. Nearly 90 per cent of mothers experience mum guilt. It’s almost inescapable in the society we live in as there is a lot of pressure on mothers to be a certain way.

I’ve tried putting myself last in order to meet the ideal image of the “self-sacrificing mother.” It only resulted in having zero energy to put others first. So everyone lost out. And my mum guilt got worse. An hour of me-time doesn’t cancel out the rest of the hours in the day. I spend those hours putting my daughter first, often at the expense of my own needs. Having some time to feel human again doesn’t make me selfish. I have been having me-time each evening while my daughter is in bed. And I am a better mum because of it. Even if I do nothing productive with my time, it gives me a chance to re-centre myself and organise my thoughts. It’s also nice not having a toddler wipe her food on me or headbutt my face.

Sharing my feelings with other mums. By bottling up my feelings, I convinced myself I was alone. I saw other mums as perfect beings without any of the issues I faced. Then I talked to my mum friends. And they felt exactly the same as I do.

We have to make mistakes in life. It is how we grow and improve. Motherhood is no different.

is not a bad thing. And when we want to succeed at something, it’s natural to have some anxiety about not doing as well as we hoped. A quote I like to remember when I feel guilty for having mum guilt is: “The very fact that you worry about being a good mum means that you already are one.” — Jodi Picoult

Letting go of the image of the perfect mother. I am learning to let go of the notion that the perfect mother exists. Although I have a critical voice in my head telling me the perfect mother exists and I’m nothing like her, the voice is getting quieter. Even my mum friends who seem in control, are experienced mothers and have the answers for any parenting question I have. In fact, they experienced mum guilt intensely. There is comfort to be found in realising you’re not alone. It also helps gain perspective. In sharing my worries, my friends can offer a different angle. And I can do the same for them. These mutually supportive friendships leave us feeling a little less like rubbish mums. Sometimes we even convince each other we are good mums. And in a society that judges mothers harshly and pits them against each other, this is much needed.

Not seeing my emotions in terms of good and bad. During the throes of mum guilt, I saw my emotions as “bad”. Stress, resentment, and anger are bad. If I feel these things, that makes me bad. And if I am a bad person, I am also a bad mother. This faulty reasoning was exacerbating my mum guilt. What I have found more helpful is seeing my emotions as signals. Instead of pushing them away, I try to listen

to them. Even unpleasant emotions have something useful to tell me. I don’t get angry because I’m a horrible person. I feel angry because I feel out of control. This is usually because I have too many things going on in my life. When I feel the anger rise or I catch myself snapping, I try to listen to what my emotions are telling me. Mostly, they are telling me I need to delegate tasks or have time for myself. Mum guilt itself is also a signal. Sometimes I feel guilty because I’m a first-time mum and I’m insecure in my abilities. Speaking to mum friends I trust often fixes this. Often it’s because I want to be a good mum, so naturally, I worry about being a bad mum. I am the child of a mother who never experienced mum guilt. She simply didn’t care how her parenting impacted her children, so some worry about my parenting ability is healthy and motivates me not to follow in my mother’s footsteps. In this case, my mum guilt is a positive signal I am not like my own mother. We worry because we care about things. Sure, too much worry is unhealthy. But if there was no such thing as mum guilt, would that result in mothers like my own? A drive to want to be the best mum you can be

We have to make mistakes in life. It is how we grow and improve. Motherhood is no different. I remember as a child I desperately wanted my mum to like me and support me. I have no memory of “mistakes” like too much TV, eating the wrong foods, her occasionally snapping at me, or any of the things I berate myself for as a mother. But what I do remember is the general feeling of my childhood. And it wasn’t a happy feeling. You don’t need to be perfect in order to create happy memories for your children. You just need to love them and let them know you are always on their side.
