THROUGH THE EYES OF TREVOR THORNE Firstly, tell us about your chosen location and why it inspires you... I walk from Penzance to Newlyn and back nearly every day and Mounts Bay always inspires me. The fleeting changes to the sea and sky, the art deco architecture of the Jubilee Pool, the fishing port of Newlyn, and the grandeur and majesty of St Michaels Mount. When painting your location, is there anything that really catches your eye that you enjoy focusing on? My work tends to concentrate on the coastline and fishing industry of Cornwall, so it depends on which I am focusing at the time. I love the trawlers and paraphernalia associated with fishing in Newlyn, and the wide-open expanse of Mounts Bay. Describe the sounds, smells and feelings you experience in your location... I love all of the sounds and smells of the sea, whether it is lapping on the shore or the crashing against it. I feel privileged to wake up each morning and pull the curtains to reveal its latest mood. What colours do you like to use when painting your location? I mix nearly all my colours from the three primaries and white. I rarely use colours straight from the tube or black. When painting/practicing ‘en plein air’, what do you think about and what are your processes when painting this way? Working en plein air for me is about scale, the temporal nature of life and our individual insignificance in the overall scheme of things. Yet, collectively I reflect that humankind is destroying the planet and its beauty all around us. I tend to mostly sketch using watercolours or pastels when working en plein air. What challenges do you face when conveying your location onto canvas? Timidity, knowing when to stop, and being prepared to risk everything to achieve something better. Finally, what do you love most about your location? Being at the end of the line, as far west from ‘the smoke’ as I can be! In 2005, Ashley Hanson and his young family left London for Cornwall to be close to the coastal landscape that continued to influence his work as an artist. After being inspired by the late Peter’s Lanyon’s ‘Porthleven’ 1951 painting, Porthleven harbour was the natural first point of call for Ashley’s Porthleven paintings, of which there are now 27. Ashley has naturally been drawn to other Cornish harbour towns too, with paintings of Padstow, Penzance, Fowey and Charlestown now in his collection. In 2019 Ashley had a solo-show called ‘COLOURSCAPES’ at the Heseltine Gallery in Truro. The exhibition was curated with over 50 paintings from his ‘City of Glass’ ‘Cornwall’ and ‘Americascapes’ series on show and was a great success. Ashley offers covid-friendly ‘Freedom in Painting’ workshops in both Porthleven and Kent throughout the year. Check out his website for up to date information www.ashleyhanson.co.uk.

Penlee House’s current exhibition, ‘Newlyn School Interiors’ provides a rare opportunity to see paintings that haven’t been exhibited in Cornwall for many years. The Newlyn School painters were a group of artists who settled in Newlyn in the 1880s and painted scenes of life in the local fishing community. SARAH EDDY When landscape artist Sarah Eddy is searching for inspiration, she takes to the coast paths. Rambling across the Cornish coastline, the excitement of finding new potential, from the shape of a headland to the ever changing colours of the ocean, resonates in her paintings that make for stunning interpretations of some of Cornwall’s best scenic views. Born in Cornwall, Sarah moved to Brighton as a teenager and lived there for 30 years before moving home. During that time, Sarah’s initial background and career was in the performing arts and as a founding member and performer with the show ‘Stomp’ Sarah toured the world for 18 years with the show. It wasn’t until her return to Cornwall that her career in painting took flight, “I think when you’re older, you absorb information when you’re learning. I needed another creative outlet after performing and I think there’s a fine line between all the arts. Creative people often cross over into those sub-genres.” With colour and place going hand in hand, and her continual quest to understand the movement of oil paint through formal study and free painting, Sarah’s works and ever-evolving artistry has proven popular with those seeking to take a piece of Cornwall to their home, “I love the connections people have with my paintings. As it’s Cornwall, people have so many memories they like to share with me and each painting always seems to go to someone who has an attachment to the place I’ve captured.” With a studio gallery at Princes Street in Truro, visitors can see Sarah’s paintings, including pieces she is currently working on, for themselves every day from Monday to Saturday. YEW TREE GALLERY Now open, though preferably by prior booking, this long established gallery on the coast between St Ives and St Just, is showing ‘SEEING THE LIGHT’ in September and October. A reflection on our current times as much as the artists’ interpretation of light, this show offers a welcome lifting of the spirits. Internationally recognised for the expertise and beauty of his lustreware ceramics, SUTTON TAYLOR has again defied the limitations of the kiln in his exquisite new collection of bowls, bottles and vases in singing colours. MICHAEL SHEPPARD’s subtle, luminous oil paintings give an abstract view of the transforming aspect of light on solid objects. The glass roof of gallery II adds brightness to SAUL
CATHCART’S mixed media plein-air paintings and LESLEY BIRCH’s atmospheric oils, many based on her visits to the Scottish Isles. LAUREL KEELEY traces field furrows and land contours in her stoneware ceramics, and glassmakers ANDREW SANDERS & DAVID WALLACE show colourful vases and bowls as well as finely shaped wine glasses. SARAH DREW’s jewellery incorporates beach findings as well as eco-silver and pearls, and GUY ROYLE’s new necklaces, bangles and earrings are more sumptuous than ever! Any Yew Tree exhibition would be incomplete without JOHN MALTBY’s fascinating ceramic sculptures. A brand new collection will soon be on the
website. New slate tables and bird baths by HELEN NOCK have just arrived for the garden too. Plenty to enjoy in this exhibition! Keigwin, nr .Morvah & Pendeen, TR19 7TS T: 01736 786425 W: www.yewtreegallery.com

COVER ARTIST
DAVID GRAY Blending his love of art with a career in industrial engineering, David Gray has always had a methodical edge to his work. With a history of metal, mechanics and technology behind him, his passion for nautical themes are heavily present in his artwork. “I’ve always had a love of boats,” David explains, “if the tide is in with turquoise water, you get reflections and shadows, if the tide is out the boats lean over as if they are drunk on the sand. The boat’s colours, buoys, fishing nets and fishermen are all a pure joy to paint. As a child in the 1960’s I used to have the Eagle comic every week. The artwork was fantastic, and the centre page spread was a cutaway drawing of a ship, plane, lorry or anything mechanical, which I studied on how they were constructed.” David began a career in technical drawing, from sketching parts for car manuals to boat construction designs. In 1979, David made the decision to live in the West Country. His first stop was a summer in St Ives, “I was very inspired by the artist Ben Maile, who had his shop and studio there, he used the paint in a very loose way. I used to spend time around the harbour sketching boats and selling pen and ink sketchings to people passing by.”
31 LOVEGOODS ART & GLASS GALLERY Lovegoods Art & Glass Gallery is a small family run gallery in the center of the mining town of Camborne. They promote established and new artists specialising in paintings, fused and blown glass. For a relaxed chat and to view the art work, feel free to visit glass artist Lesley Clarke and Jo between 10-4pm Mon - Sat.
Working in the marine industry for many years in boat construction design, it wasn’t until the late 90’s when David finally started to tutor Creative Art Classes at Truro Arts School and run his own classes. Today, as a full-time artist, David creates beautiful paintings full of light, reflection and atmosphere, all still incorporating his love for construction and boats. David describes his style as loosely realistic, slightly abstract and with quirky boats. From moody, misty harbour scenes to bright colourful harbours that look as if they’ve just passed a bought of rain, David’s work evokes a real sense of place and emotion and offers a unique blend between two very different worlds, to create a piece of art that is totally original. David’s work is available to view and buy in the Customs House gallery, Porthleven, www.cornwall-art.co.uk Check out where else he exhibits his work at www.davidgray-artist.co.uk

TRUDIE MOORE Trudie Moore’s contemporary abstract paintings explore the tension created by control and restraint and the contrast with freedom in the painting process. Her current paintings have luminous fields of colour, transparencies and opacities that act as both a visual and an actual layer over one another, and which are layers upon the surface layer of the canvas. She works in clean, bright colours and fluorescents which

A GLIMPSE AT... ALFRED WALLIS 1855-1942 Born in 1855 in Penzance, Alfred Wallis didn’t discover painting until he was 70 years of age. Originally, Wallis spend most of his life working as a fisherman; his talents for painting weren’t discovered until 1928 by fellow artists Christopher Wood and Ben Nicholson. By then, Wallis was a rag and bone merchant, with little money to his name let along reputation as a renowned painter. However, Alfred’s memories of deepsea fishing boats no longer in use, as well as his direct, naïve approach to painting, impressed and inspired Nicholson and Wood and the three soon became close friends. It was this friendship that helped catapult Wallis into the league of painters who were seen as the best in Britain at the time, and whose legacy still stands today. When asked why he painted, Wallis’ response was to ‘keep himself company’. In 1876, Wallis had married Susan Ward, the love of his life. At the time, Wallis was just 20 years old, whilst Susan was 41. Wallis became stepfather to her five children and continued to work as a deep-sea fisherman in the early day so his. Marriage, mostly in the North Atlantic between Penzance and Newfoundland. Sadly, during this time, two of Alfred’s infant children died, after which he switched to local fishing in Penzance. In 1922, Susan Wallis died. Whenever Wallis felt lonely, he would paint, purely because he wanted to. The naïve term used for his work derives from this practice, as Wallis had never had any training or art lessons and was entirely self-taught. Whilst Alfred Wallis never became a rich man, even from his time painting, he did become part of a legacy that is still remembered today. Mostly, Wallis reminds us of a man that proves it is never too late to try anything new, simply for the fun of trying it. You can see some of Wallis’s artwork at Tate St Ives. CLAUDIA HOCKING
Marine life is a constant source of inspiration for Claudia: She lives on the coast and is married to a fisherman, the colour and character of the daily catch is an aspect of Cornish life that she lives and breathes. Giving new life to old surfboards destined for landfill, is a fresh concept for her art - like fish, surfboards are shaped for ease of movement through water so it seems a natural partnership to explore creatively. Using multiple layers of colour and texture, she employs original techniques to create distinctive pieces of art that make a dramatic statement as a single piece or, as a collective ‘shoal’. Examples of her work can be seen at her gallery by appointment only, or at The Beach Hut, Watergate. E: claudiahocking@mail.co.uk

MEET THE MAKER
Like the unstoppable motions of decay, erosion and growth, everything Lynne Speake does evolves organically. Taking her inspirations from the natural world’s ever-changing processes, Lynne’s ceramics and sculptural jewellery have an ethereal ruggedness to them, bringing together delicate ceramic forms with rich earth textures and colours. Lynne’s ceramic work manifests itself in two factions. Firstly, is Precious Collective, an online Instagram group that brings together art jewellery. With wearable sculptures one of Lynne’s key crafts, she wanted to create a presence in Cornwall for likeminded makers, but Lynne soon discovered a vast array of talented craftspeople working in the field. Precious Collective now has 200 members worldwide and over 10,000 followers. The group recently opened their third group show, exhibiting in Lille, France. “My [normally] large wearable sculptures are created from all the things I find when walking my dogs and also in Gweek boatyard where I live on our 100-year-old Looe Lugger. I love making these recycled statement piece and initially I used porcelain paperclay as a central element.” It was through her love of creating wearable art, that Lynne soon found her second creative outlet, Fragile Earth Ceramics. “During a mentoring scheme with artist Zoe Robertson at Cultivator Cornwall, I realised that I loved working with porcelain paperclay,” Lynne explains, “so it seemed a natural progression for the ceramics to become pieces in their own right. I still do combine them into the art jewellery, but this is becoming less of an occurrence.”
LYNNE SPEAKE Finding the forgiving nature of porcelain pipeclay advantageous to her delicately inclined designs, Lynne is able to create thin, intricate works that are both sturdy and stable. “When I’m working on surface decoration, I enter into a totally immersive state…” Lynne says. “I am totally absorbed by the textures, the marks, the shapes and to some degree the colour, although it’s strange as I’m a big fan of colour, but with my ceramics I have a very strong desire to restrict my palette to black, which and grey – the brown in the pieces comes out during firing. “Individual pieces determine how they want to be, they have their own spirit, sometimes it’s a bit sad when something that was starting to look extra striking breaks after many hours of working, but that doesn’t seem to happen too often and I feel that what emerges is always meant to be.” As Lynne continues to balance two disciplines, she regularly returns to painting, her newfound textures and influences coming together to create a cohesive style that allows each piece to sing in individuality, “I really can’t do work that is a production line of identical pieces – I am always trying to seek out new adventures and ways of working – keeping everything fresh. So, it is a total love of the making process and going on new journeys with my materials that drives me onwards.”
