As I went through the final edits to this midsummer edition of Northwest Yachting, I couldn’t help but notice the many energetic expressions peppering the pages—get cookin; cast off; mix it up; and, of course, fish on! Perhaps that’s because July is “go time” for boaters in the Northwest, the month to simply sail forth and soak up every last drop of summer.

This issue should whet your appetite accordingly. Perhaps quite literally, when it comes to the stunning Northwest seafood recipes found in the feature by Sea Fare columnist James O. Fraioli that starts on page 48. Or, perhaps you’ll salivate over the newly available charter vessel, Ascente, as it invites you to explore the bounds of British Columbia. WA Floats Funds to Lakebay Marina, Pumpout Washington in Biennial Budget

After 105 days of negotiations with maritime lobbyists, the Washington State Legislature completed its 2023-25 biennial capital budget session in Olympia with more than $3 million in combined funding for boat-centric projects, including renovations of the closed Lakebay Marina and an expansion of the popular Pumpout Washington program to protect Puget Sound waters.

In April, the Legislature passed a bill to set aside more than $1.3 million to refurbish the currently closed Lakebay Marina, located on Mayo Cove near Key Peninsula’s Penrose Point State Park. Approximately $1 million of the funds will be used to replace old underground fuel tanks at the marina, renovate the boat ramps, and rebuild the dock slips, which have been removed. The remaining $300,000 will be set aside for the planned renovations to the marina building itself.

Built in 1884, the marina’s original pier was used by various cargo ships and the vessels of Puget Sound’s Mosquito Fleet of small steamships through the early 20th century. In 1928, the Washington Cooperative Egg and Poultry Association built the warehouse where the marina is now, providing critical local jobs in the farming and maritime industries during the Great Depression. By 1958, when the co-op moved out, the building was converted into a marina, encompassing 18 acres. Over the years, however, the marina slowly fell into disrepair and was closed to the public after becoming a safety hazard.

In 2021, the state’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) partnered with the Recreational Boaters Association of Washington (RBAW) to buy the marina with funding from the state’s Recreation and Conservation Office. Earlier this year, the marina building was placed on the Pierce County Register of Historic Places.

Once renovations begin, RBAW said it plans to replace the marina’s bulkhead, restore the Mayo Cove shoreline, remove old creosote-treated wood pilings, install gratings to reduce shading, replace the fuel dock, improve landscaping, and generally restore opportunities for boating, sailing, kayaking, and other boating activities with room for 40 to 60 vessels. For these extensive Lakebay renovations, RBAW intends to re-submit a grant application for the next round of the state’s Boating Facilities Program (BFP) to secure more funds. If approved, the BFP money would be generated from state gas taxes paid by Washington boaters.

The Legislature also approved a $1.8 million allocation to expand Washington State Parks’ 10-year-old Pumpout Washington program to ensure vessel operators pump their boat sewage properly in more than 100 certified marinas around Puget Sound. According to RBAW, about $1 million of the funds will be used to identify geographic needs and expand recreational pump-out capacity, while the remaining $800,000 will help establish pump-out operations for commercial vessels at the Port of Anacortes.

In other maritime-related biennial budget news, both houses of the Legislature passed a bill to expand the buffer zone between vessels and Southern Resident orca whales to 1,000 yards to help prevent collisions with the critically endangered sea mammals. As covered in NWY’s June issue, Gov. Jay Inslee signed the orca bill into law, which will become effective on January 1, 2025. The Legislature also passed two bills (SB 5433 and HB 1753) that would empower the state to purchase and remove derelict aquatic structures and vessels to protect the marine environment and native species habitat.

Signature Yachts Lands Exclusive Northwest Dealer Rights for Expanding X Shore

Two years after making a big splash in the American e-boat market, the waves from Swedish boat maker X Shore are crashing again on the Pacific Northwest market, thanks to an exclusive dealership agreement with Seattle-based Signature Yachts.

Under the agreement, Signature will be the sole dealer for all X Shore boats in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, giving the local broker access to the growing popularity of X Shore’s two all-electric boat lines: the 26’ Eelex 8000 and its newer, smaller cousin, the 21’ X Shore 1.

The Eelex was released in 2019 and appeared in this year’s Seattle Boat Show, earning raves from boaters looking for ways to tread water with a lighter carbon footprint. Last year, the brand also launched the compact and more affordable X Shore 1, priced at about $139,000, a significant reduction from Eelex’s $329,000 price tag. The price drop is expected to attract more buyers of the smaller, whisper-quiet e-vessels in the U.S. market, of which the Northwest could become a substantial fraction.

Investors are apparently as excited about X Shore as American customers. In April, X Shore completed a $30 million venture funding round, led by SEB Investment Management AB and several unnamed existing and new shareholders. This funding came roughly a year after an earlier venture round worth $50 million in 2022, which involved an investment from Peter Carlsson, CEO of Swedish battery manufacturer

Northvolt. According to X Shore, the latest investment will be used to scale up its production of both boat models at its 160,000-square-foot factory in Nyköping, Sweden, and bring its composites work in-house to increase efficiency. The company also said it expects to reach profitability sometime in 2024.

The latest Eelex 8000 model features a fully modular design, allowing customers to re-arrange the seating and configure more than 10 different layouts that can be customized for fishing, diving, water sports, or socializing. Equipped with a 225 kW motor and a 126 kWh-capacity battery, the Eelex 8000 cruises at 20 knots and can reach more than 30 knots flat out, with an average range of 100 nautical miles before it needs another charge.

Much like the Eelex, the X Shore 1 shares a similarly chiseled Scandinavian design and is available in either an open design, or with a canopy top. It has similar handling characteristics to the Eelex, but comes with a smaller 125 kW motor and 63 kWh battery, giving it a typical range of 50 nautical miles. For both boats, X Shore said the batteries can be recharged by 20 to 80 percent in about 50 minutes with a 45 kW charger, 1.5 hours with a 22.5 kW charger, and four hours with a 7 kW charger.

New Tenants Found for Port of Everett, Lake Union Piers Redevelopments

Time to roll out the welcome wagon, because some new neighbors will soon be coming to the Puget Sound region. Several new restaurants, bars, and wine-tasting rooms are scheduled to move into two large, mixed-use redevelopment projects this summer: Waterfront Place in Everett and Lake Union Piers in Seattle.

Many of the new Everett-area tenant leases involve Seattle-based architecture and engineering firm BCRA, which was awarded a $1.5 million contract from the Port of Everett Commission in February to design two new buildings in the Fisherman’s Harbor section of the city’s 65-acre Waterfront Place development.

Already home to the Waterfront Place Apartments, the Hotel Indigo, and its restaurant, the Jetty Bar & Grille, Everett’s new Fisherman’s Harbor district is already being aptly nicknamed the “restaurant row” section of the new development.

Both newly open, the site now features Fisherman Jack’s restaurant, offering dishes of Chinese and Northwest cuisine, and a selection of sweets and coffees from South Fork Baking Co. The new BCRAdesigned building being completed next door will be the home to Anisoptera Spa, Rustic Cork Wine Bar, and Menchie’s @ the Marina.

The second 3,000-square-foot BCRA building, at the corner of Seiner and West Marine View drives, is currently slated to house a Lazy Boy Brewing Co. bar. Within the same building, the Port is actively recruiting tenants for a year-round fish market to feature some of the freshest seafood in the region. Details of the proposal are currently scant, but the size of the fish market would encompass about 1,500 square feet of retail space, along with a wide open-air patio facing the site’s commercial fishing docks.

Other new attractions to whet boaters’ appetites include The Muse Whiskey & Coffee, a retro speakeasy-style space that offers coffee by

day and bar service in the evenings, that moved into the historic Weyerhaeuser building this summer. Woods Coffee and Sound 2 Summit Brewing Co. have also recently opened their doors at Port Gardner Landing, south of Lombardi’s restaurant. In addition, the Port of Everett is still recruiting complementary restaurants operators in the area to offer such options as breakfast, brunches, or pizza. If selected, these businesses could be expected to open in the 2024 or 2025.

Meanwhile, in Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood, the Lake Union Piers development, which already hosts the Seattle Boats Afloat Show as well as many of the offices for area yacht brokerages, said it will have a new place for boaters to gather and sip fine wines.

Ackley Brands, a local owner of premium wine brands, said it will be opening a new 3,000-square-foot wine-tasting room in 2024, with seating both indoors and on an outdoor patio with panoramic views of the marina. Some of the Ackley wines that are expected to be available at the new establishment include Montinore Estate, Landlines Estates, Cataclysm Wine Co., and Borealis Vintners.

“The new tasting room will be a great addition to South Lake Union, elevating locally owned wineries and sharing a deep appreciation for world-class wine,” said Ada M. Healey, chief real-estate office for property owner Vulcan Real Estate.

Vulcan also said the wine room with soon be “accompanied by other dynamic dining, entertainment, recreation, and maritime tenants” in the project’s 60,000 square feet of commercial space under development.

Three spacious decks, an immense flybridge, luxurious living quarters, and incredibly thoughtful design throughout; the list of attractions just goes on and on when it comes to the new Sirena 68 available from Jeff Brown Yachts.

The first feature that stands out on the new Sirena 68 is not just its ample beam of nearly 20 feet, it’s the way design firm Frers Naval Architecture & Engineering makes such efficient use of the open spaces aboard, including a flybridge that is one of the widest in its class. With room for eight people, including a two-person crew, the latest offering from Sirena provides three spacious decks that can be customized into multiple layouts to create comfortable spaces for social interaction, both indoors and out.

The vessel’s lightweight, hybrid carbon-fiber superstructure allows for a low center of gravity, better stability, and lower fuel consumption. A central support pillar holds up the rigid hardtop on the flybridge, allowing for sweeping, open-air views. Besides a fully Garmin-equipped helm, the top level includes a forward seating area, a starboard-side sofa, an aft sundeck, and a wet bar with a refrigerator, icemaker, and propane BBQ. Guests can also relax with a 42” Smart LED TV and a Fusion RA770 Apollo audio system.

A portside staircase leads down to an open aft cockpit with teak flooring, a cushioned sofa around a fixed table, and three folding chairs. A hydraulic lift platform is also located astern to carry an RIB tender.

Once inside the salon, visitors are greeted by an inviting galley to port, with a Statuario marble countertop bar open aft to the cockpit. Appliances include a Miele dishwasher, a refrigerator/freezer, a four-hob ceramic cooktop, a microwave, and a stainless steel sink. Opposite the galley is a bench-seat dinette, with leather chairs and a table. Moving forward in the carpeted salon, guests can socialize around a

U-shaped, upholstered settee and chairs, with a 50” Smart LED TV on a hi-lo lift and a Fusion audio system wired to the salon and cockpit.

Forward of the salon is the main helm, featuring a Garmin Diamond instrumentation package, including chartplotters, an open-array Fantom 54 radar, and Class B AIS. Directly outside the helm windshield is yet another gathering space: A C-shaped sofa and varnished teak table on the foredeck. At the bow, an enormous sunpad invites all sunbathers aboard.

On the lower deck, a wood-floored passageway leads to a laundry area, three cabins, and three heads that can be customized in various combinations. The full-beam owner’s cabin amidships includes a king-size berth, his-and-hers heads with a shared shower, and a 42” Smart LED TV. The other VIP and guest staterooms have private heads and 32" Smart LED TVs. Wide side windows allow abundant natural light in each cabin. At the stern, owners have the option of creating an aft storage area or a fourth crew-cabin space with two bunkbeds.

Powering it all are muscular, twin Volvo D13 engines, available in the 900- or 1,000-hp formats. The low-drag, semi-displacement hull helps give the Sirena 68 a 16-knot cruise speed and a maximum of 26 knots in the 900 configuration; or, 28 knots with the 1,000s.

The open-air cockpit provides plenty of room for busy anglers, with six tackle boxes, four tackle drawers, four rod holders, and storage for various tools, filet knives, and lures. Salt- and fresh-water washdowns at the transom, plus a full cockpit perimeter gutter system with oversize scuppers, allow for easy cleanup and drainage.

Inside the pilothouse, an L-shaped, cushioned settee is located to port, with a lacquer-finished, removable wooden table just aft of the helm chairs. The helm itself features a custom electronics package per the customer’s choice, such as twin Simrad touchscreens, a Ritchie compass, USB and DC plugs, a dual trumpet horn, and trim tabs with LED position indicators.

For a steady ride on choppy seas, the optional Seakeeper system, along with the Yamaha Helm Master, can dramatically reduce rolling and allows for docking with the touch of a finger. A custom tinted glass windshield with sliding side windows gives the pilothouse ventilation and a clear, 360-degree view of the surroundings. Also, a custom aft canvas enclosure and Fusion stereo system help provide entertainment when the weather turns.

Just below the helm, three steps provide access to an expansive V-berth for two, perhaps even three, in the bow, with a storage locker to port, the private head to starboard, and an openable hatch above for natural illumination and fresh air. Powered by a pair of Volvo Penta IPS 1350 engines, the yacht is outfitted with a Seakeeper 16 for almost complete roll reduction in even the heaviest of seas; the Volvo configuration also allows the Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) to aid in location hold, auto trim, and Volvo joystick steering, and also features multiple joysticks for ease of docking.

Sunlovers are sure to gravitate from there to the foredeck when the Belize 66 is at anchor. A space-saving pantograph door provides excellent access from the salon to the portside deck and going forward you’ll notice the bulwark is raised to ensure more comfortable side access and drier passage-making. The sun deck is the very definition of fun, with a large sunken U-shape lounge and a central dinette table that can be lowered to create a day bed of royal proportions.

For those of us who are fortunate enough to call the Pacific Northwest home, there’s an abundance of diverse marine life found in our bays, estuaries, and seas. And nothing quite compares to our summer fresh sheet: from the Chinook and sockeye salmon runs to the fervent Dungeness crab season, plus bounty like our native Olympia oysters, spot prawns, and the almost mythical geoduck. Yes, some of the richest seafood resources on the planet can be found here in our corner.

Recently, I had the good fortune of teaming up with local Chef John Wahlke and Fremont Mischief Distillery on the cookbook: Spirited Cooking from the Pacific Northwest. Whether it’s serving fresh, sustainable fish or aging their select spirits aboard the famed crab boats featured on Discovery’s Deadliest Catch, Fremont Mischief understands seafood and is committed to responsible sourcing, and offers dishes within the pages of this book that showcase just how lucky we are to live in the Evergreen state.

Crab Roll with Smoked Paprika & Fennel Pollen

Inspired by the East Coast lobster roll, this recipe features fresh, succulent Northwest crab. You can use either king crab or Dungeness.

Serves 4 to 6

4 fresh hot dog buns, split

1⁄4 cup whole unsalted butter

2 cups Crab Salad, recipe follows

4 small lemon wedges

1 teaspoon fennel pollen, optional

1 teaspoon smoked paprika, optional

In a sauté or cast-iron pan over medium heat, add the butter. When melted, place the bun, cut-side down into the melted butter and toast. Remove from pan and slice an opening into the top of the bun, creating a pocket for the crab. If you like, drizzle some pan butter into the pocket. Next, add the Crab Salad into the roll, making sure to stuff it well without tearing the bun. It is okay to have some crab protruding from the top. Squeeze the lemon wedge on top, and finish with the fennel pollen and smoked paprika, if desired.

Crab Salad

Makes 2 cups

1 pound fresh cooked king or Dungeness crab meat, picked and chilled

1 tablespoon red onion, peeled and thinly sliced and chopped

1 tablespoon thinly sliced and chopped celery

1⁄2 tablespoon thinly sliced chives

1⁄4 cup mayonnaise

2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

2 teaspoons kosher salt

1⁄2 teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper

1⁄4 teaspoon fennel pollen

1⁄4 teaspoon smoked paprika

In a mixing bowl, add the crab meat. Gently break the meat apart but leave some larger pieces intact. Add the red onion, celery, chives, mayonnaise, lemon juice, salt, pepper, fennel pollen, and smoked paprika. Mix well and reserve in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Gin-Cured Sockeye Salmon

This recipe features gin and its botanicals—a fabulous flavoring for salmon. When shopping, select fresh, wild sockeye salmon. It’s the best salmon for this recipe because of its low-fat content.

Serves 10 (2 ounces per serving)

1⁄2 cup Gin Botanicals, see below

1 cup granulated sugar

1-1⁄2 cups salt

2 pounds fresh sockeye salmon fillet, skin on, pin bones removed

6–10 fresh mint leaves

Gin Botanicals

3 tablespoons juniper berries

1 tablespoon coriander

1 teaspoon dried lemon zest

1⁄2 cinnamon stick

1 bay leaf

1 teaspoon chamomile

3 cardamom pods, broken

1⁄4 teaspoon fennel

3 black peppercorns

Place all the ingredients for the Gin Botanicals in a blender, grinder, or food processor. Give it a couple of pulses just to crack the spices, but do not grind them. Transfer to a bowl along with the salt and sugar. Mix well to combine.

Next, lay out a sheet of aluminum foil about three times the size of the fillet. Sprinkle half the curing mixture evenly on the wrap. Place the salmon fillet skin-side down on the cure. Add the mint leaves across the fillet, then evenly cover the exposed flesh with a generous amount of the curing mixture. Wrap the fillet in foil and place on a baking sheet and transfer to the refrigerator. Now place a second baking sheet on top of the fillet and hold it down to apply a light weight to the fillet. (A couple soup cans work great for this.) Keep in the refrigerator at least 24 hours.

Remove the salmon from the refrigerator, rinse, and pat dry. Repeat the process (cure, foil, refrigerate for 24 hours) using new foil. You will repeat the process every 24 hours for 3 to 4 days depending on the size and width of your salmon fillet. The goal here is for the flesh to become slightly translucent and firm. The edges may be a bit saltier than the thicker middle part of the fillet. This is normal.

To serve, slice as thin as possible (works well if the fillet is slightly frozen). Store any unused salmon in the refrigerator (wrapped in plastic wrap) for up to 1 week. You can also portion and freeze the salmon in airtight freezer-safe bags for up to 1 month.

Baked Chinook Salmon with Maple Syrup & Spices

In North America, the Chinook or king salmon is one of the most important sport and commercial fish. They’re also the largest salmon species, commonly exceeding thirty pounds. The salmon can be baked with or without the skin. If you prefer to leave the skin on, make sure it has been descaled and thoroughly cleaned and washed beforehand.

Serves 4 to 6

2 tablespoons chili powder

2 tablespoons onion powder

1 tablespoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon ginger powder

1 tablespoon fresh minced thyme

1 lemon, zested

1 medium-sized orange, zested

2 tablespoons smoked paprika

5 tablespoons kosher salt

1 teaspoon white pepper

2 1⁄2 pounds fresh Chinook (king) salmon fillet

3 tablespoons pure maple syrup

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

In a small bowl, add the chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, ginger powder, thyme, lemon zest, orange zest, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well until combined.

Arrange the salmon fillet, skin-side down, on a parchment-lined baking sheet. (Note: You can also use a cedar plank or place on top of herbs and aromatics to introduce more flavor, but that will increase the cooking time.)

Rub the top of the salmon fillet with a thin layer of maple syrup. Then lightly coat the fillet with the spice mixture.

Place the salmon in the preheated oven for approximately 14 minutes. Note: Actual cooking time can depend on the thickness of the fillet, fat content, if you’re using the baking sheet or cedar plank, additional herbs, and your individual oven. If you see any albumin (congealed white protein that oozes out the side of the salmon), that usually means the fish is overcooking or cooking too quickly. Best to keep checking the salmon during the baking process; you can always cook it longer, but there’s not much you can do when it’s overcooked. Additional note: The salmon will continue to cook when removed from the oven, so best to remove it when the middle of the fillet is medium rare.

Here’s a sweet and tangy dish that gets better with age. Make a batch and take it camping, enjoy it as an everyday snack, or include it on a summer party tapas tray. Be sure to cut the halibut in large pieces so the fish maintains its cellular structure when pickled. For the pickling method, you can choose to pressure cook to properly can, but due to the delicate flesh of halibut, it’s best to pour the cooled brine over the top of the fish, seal the jars by hand, and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Makes 1 (2-quart) jar

1 quart water

1 cup kosher salt

2 pounds fresh halibut fillet, skinned and cut into 1-inch pieces

Pickling & Spices

1 cup water

3⁄4 cup distilled white vinegar

3⁄4 cup apple cider vinegar

2 teaspoons yellow mustard seeds

1 tablespoon, plus 1 teaspoon black peppercorns, divided

6 garlic cloves, peeled, divided

3 bay leaves, divided

4 slices peeled fresh ginger

2 fresh thyme sprigs

1⁄2 yellow onion, peeled and thinly sliced

1⁄2 fennel bulb, thinly sliced

1 carrot, peeled and thinly sliced

2 fresh lemon slices

In a small pot over high heat, bring 1 quart of water to a boil. Add the salt, remove the pot from the heat, and allow the salt to completely dissolve. Then place the brine in the refrigerator to cool completely. When cool, add the halibut cubes, cover, and return to the refrigerator for 12 hours. Remove the halibut from the brine and rinse and pat dry the pieces; set aside.

In a saucepot over high heat, add the 1 cup of water, vinegars, mustard seeds, 1 tablespoon of the black peppercorn, 3 garlic cloves, 2 bay leaves, and the ginger. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and add the halibut. Simmer for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat and refrigerate until cooled completely.

Sterilize 2 glass quart jars (or 4 smaller pint jars). Add the remaining garlic cloves, thyme sprig, and the 1 teaspoon of black peppercorns. Note: Divide evenly if using multiple jars. Carefully remove the halibut from the pickling brine and place in the jar(s), layering with the onions, fennel, carrots, and lemon slices. Finish with the remaining bay leaf. Next, strain the pickling brine to remove any corns or unwanted debris. Pour over the top of the fish until it is fully submerged, and the liquid reaches the top of the jars, almost overflowing. Seal the jars and refrigerate for up to 5 weeks. Serve with crackers, bread, on a salad, or by itself straight out of the jar.

Mix it Up

It’s docktail time: Author, mixologist, and restaurateur NICK MAUTONE shares expert tips on how to shake up your summer entertaining on board.

NWY: Many of us love to entertain on our vessels, especially during the beautiful summer months. What are some of your best tips for hosting on board successfully?

NM: Entertaining on a boat is both fun and challenging at the same time. But it’s also not that different from entertaining at home where it’s smart to have everything prepped and ready to go before your guests arrive; for boating, you just need to adapt that strategy to a more mobile mindset. I like to think of it as the “K.I.S. strategy”: keep it simple. For example, for me as a cocktail guy, I like to pre-batch a really great punch, using fresh summery flavors like berries or lavender, but keep it non-alcoholic so that anyone not imbibing, like the captain, can enjoy a refreshing sipper. Then, for those who would like a cocktail, you just have to add a splash or two of liquor to the mixture to finish their drink.

Packing up from home is also crucial. I often freeze water bottles ahead of time to act as big ice cubes that don’t melt as quickly as the pre-bagged ice. It’s also smart to pack insulated silicone cups with tops to avoid spills. When it comes to food, I like to adopt the bento-box mindset, giving guests a variety of tastes and flavors. I’ll often use those boxes to pre-pack lunches with four to six dishes and sides so I don’t have to pull out an array of dishes while underway, but just pass out the boxes. Plus, you can personalize each one to your guest’s tastes, a nice touch.

I like to take this same personal approach with dips. (I’m a dip guy, for sure!) I’ll just keep those handy smaller plastic containers from when I order takeout, then repurpose them as individual dip containers; no need for sharing or worrying about double-dipping! Plus, if I pack these smaller containers in a chest with the frozen water bottles, they tend to stay cooler than a big batch in a bowl. Finally, when you are setting a table, my favorite trick is to bring along some silicone shelf liners. I’ll buy a roll of it, when I can just unroll it and set out a buffet on top; that way the dishes stay put with any bumps, plus anything can become a table that way, like the top of a cooler.

NWY: Say your slipmate hops aboard for a drink at the dock; what ideas do you have for a quick and easy summer cocktail that can be prepared on the fly?

NM: I always think it’s nice to have a more natural bottled iced tea stocked onboard, like a peach or apricot, that can easily be mixed with a clear liquor like vodka. I’m also a huge lover of kombucha and always have some around; people don’t often realize what an awesome mixer for drinks it is! One of my favorites is a lemon-ginger kombucha. All you need to do is add a little tequila and you have a fun drink. Or you can make a spin on a gin and tonic, using the kombucha in lieu of the tonic. It’s refreshing and fizzy, and feels festive and exotic, but couldn’t be easier.

NWY: What tips do you have about stocking a bar on board versus one at home?

NM: I think first up, determine what you and your loved ones most like to drink; there’s no need to stock everything under the sun, just what you

know you like and bring that aboard. You can’t go wrong with base spirits; for us, we always have Grey Goose vodka and Woodinville Whiskey bourbon. I also recommend looking for the smaller half bottles of the “accent” liqueurs. You won’t go through a whole bottle of them on a cruise, so it’s a waste of space to stock a big bottle of, say absinthe, for example. Sodas like a bitter lemon or a ginger ale, are great mixers, but the large bottles take up a ton of space and go flat so quickly that I always buy the soft pack of individual sodas instead and rubber band them together so they don’t clank around in the cooler. One of my absolute favorite add-ins is Liquor 43 from Spain. It is crafted from 43 herbs and spices, drinks like a vanilla, and adds a secret punch to just about anything; that’s worth stocking a full bottle. Also extremely versatile are the new sloe gins that have popped onto the scene. They are infused with sloe berry flavor and at 70-80 proof, they are great mixers. Stock some tonic and enjoy sloe G&Ts all summer long; they are super refreshing.

NWY: What cocktail most says “Northwest summer” to you?

NM: Something with huckleberries, for sure! We have huckleberries back East, but when I moved out to Seattle a few years ago, I just became obsessed with the tart-sweet ones here. My favorite “non-recipe” recipe is to take a pint or two of washed huckleberries, put them in a Ball jar, and then sprinkle them with sugar and a dash of orange juice. You can just throw it in the fridge and let it steep for a bit. Then, put a spoonful of the berries in a shaker bottle, add a little Mezcal, vodka, or gin, then some ice. Give it a good shake and you have the makings of the perfect summer cocktail.

Go Fish

Get your game faces on, anglers, as MARK YUASA deals out a full deck of promising mid-summer salmon fisheries.

Fish on! That thrilling statement will be echoed by anglers near and far as the statewide summer salmon fisheries move into full swing in July. There are many spots worth jotting down on your list of “must go” places to fish.

The early indicators were decent in saltwater areas that opened in June for either hatchery Chinook and/or coho; these include the Tulalip Bubble Fishery, central Puget Sound (Marine Area 10), south-central Puget Sound (Marine Area 11), and southern Puget Sound (Marine Area 13).

What’s got me even more stoked is the opening of the Strait of Juan de Fuca July 1 for hatchery Chinook and coho. The western Strait at Sekiu-Pillar Point (Marine Area 5) opens July 1 through August 15 for hatchery-marked Chinook and coho. The Chinook fishery quota is 3,906 (3,890 in 2022 and 4,077 in 2021). Look for kings lurking off the Caves to the Sekiu River, Slip Point, Mussolini Rock, and the Coal Mines east to Pillar Point.

A lot of hype will be centered around the eastern Strait off Port Angeles (Marine Area 6)—located west of a true north/south line through the #2 Buoy immediately east of Ediz Hook—that also opens July 1 for hatchery Chinook and coho. A 7,258 Chinook quota in 2023 is larger than the 6,050 in 2022 and 4,769 in 2021. The area east of the of the boundary is open July 1 through August 15 for hatchery-marked coho only.

The salmon fisheries peak in mid-July as more migrating summer Chinook appear in central and northern Puget Sound (Marine Areas 9 and 10). A summer hatchery Chinook and coho fishery in northern Puget Sound (Marine Area 9) is open July 13-15 with a chance to reopen on July 20-22 and July 27-29. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife fishery managers will assess after each three-day fishery in Marine Area 9 to see if additional fishing days are feasible. The Marine Area 9 Chinook quota is 4,300 (4,700 in 2022 and 2021 and 5,600 in 2020). The central Puget Sound (Marine Area 10) hatchery Chinook fishery is open daily from July 13-August 31, although Chinook retention could close sooner if the 3,566 quota is achieved.

The San Juan Islands (Marine Area 7) is open July 13-15 for hatchery-marked Chinook with a quota of 2,181 (1,800 in 2022 and 1,382 in 2021).

More openings—July 20-22 and July 27-29—could occur after the initial three-day opener is assessed by WDFW. Hatchery coho fishing is set to

reopen August 1-31 and September 1-30 for a non-select coho fishery, which is a change from 2022 when the late summer fishery was directed for hatchery coho only.

Keep in mind there are many other salmon fishing options closer to the Seattle/Tacoma metropolis.

South-central Puget Sound (Marine Area 11) is open daily starting July 1 for hatchery Chinook where the June opener started off well, although as summer progresses it tends to be off and on as migrating fish return in waves. During last month’s hatchery Chinook fishery, catches were decent off Point Defiance Park in Tacoma; just outside of Gig Harbor at a spot referred to as the Flats; Point Dalco on the southwest side of Vashon Island, Colvos Passage near the Girl Scout Camp; and outside of Quartermaster Harbor. Other good Area 11 options are the southeast side of Vashon Island; Point Robinson; Dolphin Point on the northeast side of Vashon Island; Redondo Beach; and south of the Southworth Ferry Landing.

The coho fishery in Marine Area 10, which opened on June 1, has been decent for coho averaging 2 to 4 pounds in the shipping lanes off Jefferson Head, Kingston-Apple Tree Point, from Edmonds oil docks south to Richmond Beach, West Point south of Shilshole Bay, and along the east side of Bainbridge Island.

Hatchery Chinook fishing south of the Narrows Bridge in southern Puget Sound (Marine Area 13) remains fair at times at Gibson Point, Hale Passage, and Point Fosdick. All the coastal ports that opened in late June—Ilwaco, Westport, La Push and Neah Bay (Marine Areas 1, 2, 3 and 4)— should be generating good opportunities all summer long for a mix of Chinook and hatchery coho.

Before hitting up your favorite fishing hole, be sure to check the regulations for any updates or emergency closures. In the next issue of the magazine, I’ll dive into August salmon fishing options including an expected return of nearly 4 million pink salmon as the number of angling opportunities expands heading to the peak of summer. Swift as the Wind

Rising to the challenge: DOUG HANSEN recaps the heart pounding, record breaking ride that was this year’s Swiftsure International Yacht Race.

Hosted on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, in the gem that is Victoria, British Columbia, the Swiftsure International Yacht Race has been a mainstay of the sailing scene in the Northwest (or Southwest if you are Canadian) for nearly a decade.

This year’s forecast called for wind, lots of wind. A low-pressure system was forming off the coast and was expected to make landfall, building into a heavy gradient down the straits throughout the day. The combination of wind and currents was forecasted to push the fleet around the course, creating near perfect conditions for a record-breaking year.

On the morning of the start, the harbor felt eerie, with a relatively light breeze welcoming racers to the course. A slight localized easterly wind had swirled into the starting area of the Victoria cityfront breakwater. At the same time, the filling and building westerly could be seen out in the middle of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It was a crystal-clear day, with the Olympic Mountains shining in the background.

Watching from the shoreline, the fleets were spread out along the start line, with some choosing to play the coastal breeze and others aiming to punch out to the prevailing westerly as soon as possible. Opting for the coastal route paid off for the early boats, while the offshore course proved advantageous for the later fleets.

The wind steadily filled as the fleet reached Race Rocks, resulting in a rough upwind beat for many boats as gusts were reaching the mid-20s. For the boats rounding the Neah Bay

mark, conditions settled down as they reached the turnaround point. However, the rough sea state made it challenging to decide how aggressively to push on the early stages of the downwind leg, knowing that the breeze was expected to build throughout the day.

Things became even more challenging as the fleet neared Sheringham. It was still daylight for most of the fleet, thanks to the high winds that kept everyone moving well throughout the day.

The excitement intensified as the fleet approached the infamous Race Passage, but suddenly, a distress call came over the radio.

A racing boat, the J125 Hamachi, had lost her mast. She found herself drifting with the mast and sail wrapped around the keel, and to make matters worse, the vessel was drifting towards Race Rocks while the crew was approaching the narrow passage. Fortunately, the three-man crew managed to clear the mast from the boat. A coordinated effort between the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guards and support from fellow racers helped bring the ship under control and Hamachi was able to be towed back to Victoria. Special thanks must be extended to the crew of Annapurna, who sacrificed their race to render aid and drag Hamachi into safe waters and away from the rocks before transferring them to the care of the Coast Guard.

Meanwhile, the Riptide 35 Terramoto was on track for a phenomenal race when they, too, experienced a broken mast, this time just after passing through Race Passage.

Fortunately, the damage to their boat was limited to the upper half of the mast, and thanks to the fantastic work of the crew, they were able to clean things up and hoist a jury-rigged setup with the remnants of the mast to finish the race. Not only was this impressive, but this little thirty-five-footer set a new course record in doing so, demolishing previous records set by significantly faster boats.

The race recently adopted a new slogan, “Always A Challenge,” and this year certainly lived up to the hype. Not only did the Cape Flattery course record fall to the wounded Terramoto, but the Clallam Bay short course record was taken by Duncan Gladman and his team onboard the custom trimaran Dragon, beating their race time from the previous year, while John Buchan’s TP52 Glory sailed a phenomenal record-setting pace on the Hein Bank course, finishing the 118-mile course in a mind-melting 6 hours and 38 minutes.

The 2023 edition of Swiftsure will go down as a legendary year in the history of a legendary race, and I expect we will be hearing the stories of this one for a long time to come.
