Lo que nos dejó el 2021 Tras un 2020 trágico y extraño, este año fue… al menos un poco más normal. Ya no hubo eventos cancelados, regresó el público a los estadios y por unos momentos nos olvidamos de que seguimos en medio de una pandemia mundial. Un año de romper rachas No hay mal que dure 100 años y este 2021 lo dejó demostrado. Por ejemplo, Argentina por fin alzó un título tras 28 años y haber perdido las finales de Copa del Mundo en 2014 y de Copa América en 2004, 2007, 2015 y 2016. El mundo entero festejó el fin de esta sequía para Messi y sus compañeros. En México, las dos maldiciones más infames vieron su fin. El Cruz Azul, tercer equipo más popular, perdió las últimas 6 finales que había jugado. Veintitrés años y medio tuvieron que esperar para alzar el título, y lo hicieron de forma extraordinaria: superlíderes, mejor ofensiva y defensiva, récord de victorias consecutivas y ganando a todos sus rivales en liguilla, y nunca se había visto un festejo así en las calles del país. Pero aún más grande era la maldición del Atlas, que tuvo que esperar más de 70 años para levantar un trofeo otra vez, y lo hicieron a lo Atlas: en un Estadio Jalisco a reventar, sufriendo y por la vía de los penales. El Clausura y el Apertura lo ganaron Cruz Azul y Atlas, y aún seguimos sin creerlo. Cincuenta años no fueron nada para los Milwaukee Bucks, liderados por un Antetokounmpo inmenso lograron romper esa terrible racha y alzar su 2º título de la NBA. Tokio 2020 y la Euro 2020… ¿en 2021? Para efectos publicitarios, ambos eventos mantuvieron su nombre a pesar de ser aplazados por un año. Y ambos fueron un éxito rotundo. La Euro nos regaló excelentes partidos, drama, sorpresas, y a una Italia vencer en penales a los ingleses, en su casa, apenas 3 años después de quedarse sin mundial. Los Juegos Olímpicos fueron únicos en su tipo, pero también nos regalaron joyas como los oros latinos de la boricua Camacho-Quinn y la venezolana Yulimar Rojas, o el primer oro compartido en décadas en la categoría de salto de altura, o el Floridano Caleb Dressel quedándose con 5 medallas doradas. Los más grandes Tom Brady y los Bucaneros de Tampa Bay lograron algo inédito: jugar y ganar el Super Bowl en tu propia casa. Aplastaron a los Chiefs y la bahía de Tampa se convirtió en la bahía de campeones, gracias también al bicampeonato del Lightning en la NHL. El Chelsea, para sorpresa de todos, ganó la Champions League a pesar de haber corrido a su DT apenas 5 meses antes. Los Bravos de Atlanta también supieron romper rachas tras conseguir el título de Serie Mundial 26 años después y a pesar de no contar con Ronald Acuña. Nole Djokovic se quedó a 4 partidos de conseguir lo que ningún hombre ha hecho: el Golden Slam. Max Verstappen rompió el dominio de Lewis Hamilton para ganar su primer campeonato de Fórmula 1, pero lo hizo de forma muy polémica. Todo ello nos dejó un 2021 inolvidable, y el 2022 trae bajo el brazo un Mundial, por lo que esperamos pueda estar a la altura.

What 2021 brought us After a strange and tragic 2020, this year was… at least a little normal-ish. There were no more canceled events, the public returned to the stadiums and for a few moments we forgot that we’re still in the midst of a global pandemic. A year of broken streaks There is no evil that lasts 100 years and this 2021 showed it. For example, Argentina finally lifted a title after 28 years and having lost the World Cup final in 2014 and the Copa América in 2004, 2007, 2015 and 2016 finals. The whole world celebrated the end of this drought for Messi and his teammates. In Mexico, the two most infamous curses came to their end. Cruz Azul, the third most popular team, lost the last 6 finals they had played. Twenty three and a half years later after lifting the title, they did it again in an extraordinary way: super leaders, better offense and defense, record of consecutive victories and beating all their rivals in the playoffs, and a celebration like this had never been seen in the streets of the country.
But even bigger was the curse of Atlas, who had to wait more than 70 years to lift any trophy again, and they did it in the Atlas way: in a bursting Jalisco Stadium, suffering and by way of penalties. The Clausura and the Apertura were won by Cruz Azul and Atlas, and we still can’t believe it. Fifty years were nothing for the Milwaukee Bucks, led by an immense Antetokounmpo, they managed to break that terrible streak and lift their 2nd NBA title. Tokyo 2020 and Euro 2020… in 2021? For advertising purposes, both events kept their name despite being postponed for a year. And both were a resounding success. The Euro gave us excellent games, drama, surprises, and Italy beat the English on penalties, at home, just 3 years after being left out of the World Cup. The Olympic Games were one of a kind, but they also gave us jewels such as the Latin golds of the Puerto Rican CamachoQuinn and the Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas, or the first shared gold in decades in the high jump category, or the Floridian Caleb Dressel earning 5 gold medals.
The best Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers accomplished something unprecedented: playing and winning the Super Bowl in your own home. They crushed the Chiefs and Tampa Bay became championship bay, also thanks to the Lightning's repeat NHL championship. Chelsea, to everyone's surprise, won the Champions League despite having fired their coach just 5 months earlier. The Atlanta Braves also knew how to break streaks after winning the World Series title 26 years later and despite not having Ronald Acuña. Nole Djokovic was 4 games away from achieving what no man has done: the Golden Slam. Max Verstappen broke Lewis Hamilton's dominance to win his first Formula 1 championship, but he did so in a highly controversial way. All this left us an unforgettable 2021, and 2022 brings a World Cup under its arm, so we hope it can be up to the task.
