SPRING CLEANING STARTING EARLY BY KAYLA BENNETT ILLUSTRATIONS BY GRACE SUBLETT

Cleaning out a closet can be hard, especially when keeping everything is easy. “I’ll wear it eventually,” “it holds sentimental value,” and “I can crop it or make it into something else” are all statements one may tell themselves when trying to clean out their closets. However, with a whole lot of discipline and a few easy tricks, cleaning out a closet that is bursting at the seams can be simple. The first step in purging a closet is evaluating a set style or look. Figuring out what the end-goal look is should be the first step. Organizing a set style can show what basics are going to need to be kept and what pieces need to go. Pinterest can be a great place to start when figuring out the style goal. After deciding on the style, decide what fits in with the style and what does not. Do not worry, the clothes that might be too hard to get rid of that do not fall into the style’s category do not have to get tossed yet. The next step is having a fashion show. Trying on the clothes will help the process of picking out what works and what looks better on the hanger. Growing in and out of clothes is completely normal. Finding comfort and confidence in every piece of clothing is the most important.

After trying on every clothing item, having no cuts is OK. However, that is not the last step. Another step to take when cleaning out the closet is thinking about the next time the piece will be worn. If the piece is not going to be worn during the next season the piece is weather appropriate, time to say goodbye. Usually buying clothes is a lot easier than getting rid of them, but that $2 sweater from the thrift store might have only looked cute because of the price. Making sure to evaluate a purchase is extremely important. Have at least three to five outfit ideas before buying an article of clothing. Purging a closet can be easy, the process just requires a lot of thinking and trying on.
