INFORMATION
How Will Your Company Benefit? There are several ways in which an intern may contribute to your company. The students come with the newest knowledge within their field and are able to help see the company in a different light. Your company will in return give the student great professional and personal challenges.
The students from VIA School of Business, Technology and Creative Industries have a solid theoretical foundation which they are looking forward to try out in practice. The work placement period is placed relatively late within the programme. Therefore, the students have developed a wide range of competences and can as such offer the company qualified assistance. There are several ways in which an intern may contribute to your company. The students come with the newest knowledge within their field and are able to help see the company in a different light. Your company will in return give the student great professional and personal challenges. Having an intern is a good opportunity for the company to meet potential future employees.
WHAT WILL IT COST YOUR COMPANY? As a starting point, there are no requirements in terms of salary for students on work placement from the engineering, technology, design and business programmes at VIA. It is up to the individual company to determine whether they wish to pay the student a salary. However, the Danish Society of Engineers (IDA) recommends an indicative salary for all engineering students. Find more information on www.ida.dk or contact Career Service Centre at VIA University College. If the geographical distance between the company and the student on work placement is large, some companies choose to provide financial support for either the transport or the accommodation.

What Will it Require of Your Company? The work tasks shall be agreed upon by the company, the student and the supervisor from VIA University College. To ensure the student a rewarding work placement period, the work tasks have to be outlined before the work placement period begins and be approved by the school’s supervisor.
Companies who employ students on work placement must ensure that the student is subject to the same work environment, insurance and safety conditions, which apply to the other employees within the company. Furthermore, the company must provide the necessary facilities and information to ensure that the student is able to solve the work tasks. During the work placement period, the students must gain a practical and theoretical insight in relation to the subjects they have studied beforehand. The student goes through this development by gaining insight into how companies act in the real world. This means that, during his or her work placement period, the student will require some support from one or more persons within the company. As
responsible for a student on work placement, one must therefore be able to both coach and share knowledge with the student. On several of the study programmes, the work placement period will be evaluated based on either continuous conversations between the company, the student and the supervisor – and/or a final report written by the student and a statement from the company on the performance of the student during the work placement period.

International Competences If you wish to have an international student affiliated with your company, the same conditions apply as for the Danish students. It could be an obvious opportunity to choose an international student, if you are currently looking into international markets, or if you have a task which has something to do with foreign languages. It may also be that you want to internationalise your company and gain new knowledge on other cultures and professional differences that may emerge when different cultures meet. Regardless of your objectives, an international student may be a significant resource for companies who strive to work globally.
It is possible to provide international students for a work placement period within the following programmes:

Henrik has during his work placement period been affiliated with an experienced production manager. In collaboration with the production manager, they have formulated a project, which is relevant for LEGO System A/S and at the same time ensures that Henrik will be able to work independently and be able to use some of the theories he has learned during his study period. As a company, we thereby get the newest knowledge from the educational institutions, and we have the opportunity to get to know Henrik as a person and his professional side - and can therefore assess on the opportunity of employment after a completion of his study. Through Henrik’s project, we have solved a problem, which we for some time have wanted to focus on, but due to missing resources not have been able to. Now, the task is solved and has given us the expected improvements, and we also sense that Henrik has matured with the task and has a realistic impression of the real working life – which he will encounter when he is done with his studies. Just being in a department with 10 other engineers gave me a lot. When the experienced engineers discussed different problems, I was able to draw on this and take new knowledge with me. I also learned how important it is for different departments to understand how to work together. However, I had to get used to voicing my opinion when I was among more experienced colleagues. I experienced both academically and personally that I grew along with the amount of responsibility and trust the company showed me. It was good for my self-esteem. Being a part of a workplace is a source of experience in itself. I was able to see, which things they prioritised highly in a project, and which things they spent less time on. I worked with several projects. Among other things, a project where I experienced being a part of the idea generation for a machine, drawing it, calculating it and seeing it completely build. I was able to use many of the basic theoretical tools, which VIA had provided me with. At the same time, it made it easier for me to build on the practical knowledge, which my work placement gave me. I often worked with the programme Revit Architecture during my studies at VIA. When I was an intern at Ravn Arkitektur, I had been able to draw on that experience from day 1. I had also been able to contribute with calculations and legal advice in relation to different legal requirements. At Bloomingville we have had many students from VIA Design in a work placement. Our design interns get their designs put into production, which is very rewarding for their portfolio. It is a win-win situation to have students in a work placement. We get extra resources and new energy, and we can offer valuable practical experience. At the same time, the students gain an understanding of how cooperation between departments works, and we always experience that our trainees “grow” a lot during their work placement period. We prepare them well for their future career. We have currently employed seven of our former interns - first in student jobs and later in newly created full-time jobs. We are very satisfied with the cooperation with VIA Design, and we recommend to other organisations to hire students in a work placement. Betina Stampe Creative Director Bloomingville

Design & Business Design & Business is a 1½-year BA top-up programme and just like the Design, Technology & Business study programme it prepares the students to work in the fashion and lifestyle industry. During the study programme, the students have the opportunity to focus even more on their chosen area of specialisation: -- Design Fashion -- Design Furniture -- Pattern Design -- Visual Fashion Communication -- Branding & Marketing Management -- Purchasing Management -- Retail Management -- Retail Design -- Entrepreneurship -- Communication & Media Strategy The specialisation period (from 5th to 7th semester) consists of subjects and projects centered on the different areas’ field of competence. Cross-functional projects on the 5th semester ensure that cooperation between design and business continues and that the students gain a deeper insight into their future colleagues’ area of expertise. The students therefore experience already during the study programme how important it is to cooperate in order to turn an idea into reality. The study programme is a combination of theory, supervision and independent study. It is therefore a prerequisite that the students are mature enough to be able to work independently on longer projects. Within the 6th semester, the students have a 2-3 month work placement period. The following lists contain examples of work tasks that a Design & Business student from the different areas of specialisation can help solve during a work placement:

BESTSELLER has a great interest in entering in a work placement agreement with students from VIA Design. Generally, they show broad understanding of the company’s entire value chain and develop quickly an overview that allows them to perform independent tasks during their work placement. For BESTSELLER it is inspiring to meet students who are able to contribute with new ideas and input and also have the skills to solve tangible tasks with relatively few guidelines.
