FIRST TURN Peter Olliviere, President
Well, the year is rapidly ending, you will be reading this in August with summer winding down. Escape to the Cape should be right around the corner with the excitement growing for what is going to be a great event. There is one glaring opportunity, that in the future could severely impact our region’s ability to put on events like The Escape. That opportunity is the lack of volunteers. PCA is a volunteer driven organization, that derives its strength from the participation of its members. Those members give of their time, money, and enthusiasm to make
our events both social and charity successful. People are the fuel that powers our activities and boy are we running low. It takes only a small amount of effort to progress from just watching to being a volunteer and part of the fun. The jobs are numerous and require no special skills. At the recent viewing of the Top Gun movie, our volunteers registered members in and gave them their tickets. Less than an hour’s worth of work, but work that led to an enjoyable evening for all. That was a small event that only required two volunteers as opposed to something like The Escape that requires several people at the starting point, followed by helpers at lunch. When we reach the hotel volunteers will be needed to run Club Check in and registration, to help at
the Banquet, as well as the Car Show on Sunday Morning. This is just to make you the member aware that having fun in PCA is not free, that several people are giving of their time to make sure you have a good time. Maybe you should think about volunteering the next time you’re enjoying a PCA event, or how about volunteering for Escape right now. As the year starts to wind down the Board has had to think about this year’s Holiday Party. Those that attended last year had a great time, so the question begs how can we improve. Last year planning was affected by the Covid Pandemic, which was still very much on people’s mind, and was still affecting the number of people that turned up at various events. None the less we were able to secure a location and had a great party. This year we will do better. Although plans are not firm, I can say that the Committee is planning a Holiday in Paradise affair that will be totally South Florida. In addition to make, it more convenient to our members we will be locating the event in the Hollywood, North Miami area. As I said not all the plans have been confirmed yet but be prepared for a Holiday Party like never before.

SHIFT INTO SOCIAL Christy Spangler, Social Chair
Can you believe it is August already? Throughout the first part of this year it has been a lot of fun attending our region’s monthly and scheduled events and meeting and socializing with you all. The Social Committee has a group of dedicated volunteers to make these events happen and it is great seeing everyone having a good time together. Imagine that on a statewide level which was experienced at Zonefest in May. Then there is the extended PCA family that comes from all around North America to the Porsche Parade that was in the Pocono mountains of Pennsylvania in June. Read more about Parade in this issue. These events are also run by dedicated volunteers. There is no question why the PCA tag line is “it’s not just the cars… it’s the People”.
Now as we countdown the days to the highly anticipated Escape to the Cape on August 20th, we will once again get together with our extended family from around Zone 12 to socialize and enjoy our amazing Porsches. Attending Escape to the Cape? Watch your email inbox for upcoming announcements and if you would like to volunteer, please contact me at socials@goldcoastregion.org. At the time of this writing, we held the Summer Wine Tasting on July 13th at Union Kitchen & Bar in Wilton Manors attended by around 40 members and organized by Kevin Jones. On July 30th there are around 30 members signed up to throw some axes at Game of Axes in Boca
Raton organized by Rick Veingrad (who at the same time, has been organizing the Escape to the Cape). The social committee is working on events for the fall and the Board of Directors is moving forward with plans presented by the holiday party planning committee for our 2022 holiday party. Stay tuned for upcoming announcements about these events via emails from Ian Gerada via “enews”. You can also check the calendar on the GCR website at goldcoastregion. org/calendar and on clubregistration.net for events and updates. If you are interested in volunteering or have an idea for something fun, contact me at socials@goldcoastregion.org.

KEY STROKES Roger Fabel, Editor
It seems like we have been running in sand for the past two years, with many of our planned events either canceled or scaled back. The 48 Hours at Sebring was a good example of the show must go on where the racers and workers enjoyed the racing. Still, many of the extra events were omitted because of COVID-19. Luckily, the pandemic seems to be under control, and the 48 Hours at Sebring is 100% back in full swing. We have definitely returned to the fun zone where we can enjoy our Porsches, our Porsche family, and various fun car-related events.
the Porsche Parade events, which are also covered in this issue of the Kassette. Gold Coast has a long history of bringing home the GOLD. I won’t give you the results until you read about each event, but I do have this to say. When you join PCA, Zonefest and Parade are a must-try if you want to enjoy the social and competitive part of your membership with a great group of people. Our team works hard to provide you with thorough coverage of the clubs’ events, and we make it a point to spotlight our members. In the near future, we will spotlight our vendors as well.
Fasten your seat belts! Last month the Kassette reported on Zonefest 2022, where we met with other PCA members from all of the regions in Zone 12. Our members did well in the competition. Several used the events to practice for
Your vote counts. It’s important to understand how the club works and how important your vote is. Every two years, the club holds elections for GCR officers and directors. We have provided an article about this to help educate you on the
process. We have also been writing about the importance of volunteers. Peter’s First Turn article explains that the club would not function without our amazing volunteers. We hope that these articles and reviewing the bylaws will help you understand our election process and how members can become involved. Next month we will publish the bios of members that are running. If you have any questions, please contact any of the officers, directors, or chairs. You can also contact the Kassette office with any questions or comments. We have been receiving some great feedback on Pedro’s tech articles. Send us a request if you have a special topic you would like him to cover. Enjoy your Porsche.

PORSCHE PARADE Article and photos by Christy Spangler, social chair
The 66th Porsche Parade was held in the Poconos, Pennsylvania with the beginning on Sunday, June 12th. Parade ’22 was a record-breaking event with over 1,100 families, 3,000+ people and featuring over 1,000 Porsche automobiles of various vintage. It is an exceptional event for anyone to attend but this was my first time at Porsche Parade. It was both overwhelming (a bit), and incredibly enjoyable. If you have never been to Parade, you have no idea what fun you are missing! Simply, ya gotta go! My adventure began on Saturday with a drive up to Sanford, FL to catch the Amtrak Auto Train. The route is a 17-hour overnight trip that tracks from Sanford, FL (near Orlando) to Lorton, VA (30 minutes south of Washington, DC). It is a great way to travel along with your car. On Sunday, once offloaded in Lorton, it was just over a 4-hour drive to check in at the Kalahari Resort in Pocono Manor, PA where the Parade was taking place. I took my 1985 944 “Shadow” to the event. Throughout the week there are many activities.

Attendees may choose from competitive events, including the Concours d ‘Elegance, Autocross (held at the Pocono Raceway), a Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) Rally, Gimmick Rally, the Technical & Historical Quiz, the golf tournament, a 5K run/walk, an art show, and radiocontrolled car competition. Beyond competing, we were offered a tour of The Yuengling Brewery, Nurnberger Bierhaus, Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, Fabspeed Motosports, and Mountain View Vineyard. There were more than enough competitive events and scenic tours to choose from, overwhelming and difficult to select the best of the best. There was also Sim Racing, Tech Tactics, resort activities such as beer tasting, an ice cream social, a wood-fire pizza making class and even an art class! The artist providing the education was the nationally famous PCA Porsche artist, Kelly Telfer. Kelly provided tips and artistic skills to those interested and there were quite a few folks who went home with personal, quality frame and hang art pieces. The PCA Juniors were kept busy with
several activities including PCA Juniors Judging for concours participants. And we ate, heartily! Five unique banquets held nightly offered up great food and libations to allow participants to relax, chat over dinner, and celebrate all things Porsche – you know, that legendary camaraderie, The People! Let us not forget the location, which offered exceptional sightseeing, great hiking, and beautiful waterfalls. The Pocono Mountains have been a vacation and idyllic travel destination for years, and with very good reason. Sunday evening started with a Zone get-

together where you could meet with PCA members from your respective Zone. Zone 12, which encompasses 11 PCA Regions in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Puerto Rico had a great turnout. Quite a few of members from central and south Florida traveled via Auto Train, people in sleeper suites and regular coach seats, with their respective Porsches in a fullyenclosed and secure train car. The welcome cocktail hour was thrilling. Porsche North America unveiled the 2023 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet America. This new Cabrio was inspired by the 356 America Roadster. It will be available starting soon, but only in America, only with rear-wheel drive, and only with a seven-speed manual. The GTS Cabrio America will be a very exclusive vehicle. The evening concluded with the Pirelli Welcome Party which included
entertainment by an African drum group, aligning with the Kalahari African Resort theme. A fun night, and still only the first night. The Concours d ‘Elegance took place on Monday. Participants began arriving as early as Friday, June,10th, to claim a spot and prepare their Porsche for the competition and judging. It was interesting walking around watching the preparations taking place: the care, the detail, and the patience to compete at the national level in the Concours is incredible. The first 50 participants were able to place their vehicles inside, in the convention center, for prep work and ultimate judging. Late-comers were relegated to a designated area in the parking lot. A total of 163 vehicles were entered in four major categories (Prepared Street, Prepared Touring, Preservation, and Restoration) and then broken down into various sub classifications.
Our very own Gold Coast Region members, Randy and Michelle Moss, with their 1997 911 Cabriolet, won fourth place and were presented with the prestigious Stuttgart Level of Achievement Award for their efforts and their exceptional Porsche. Randy and Michelle hail from the Chesapeake Region, and they have recently become GCR PCA members. Read more about their 911 on page 17.. GCR was also represented in the judging ranks. Mr. Fred Kohly and Mr. Steve Kidd were both judges for the Parade Concours de ‘Elegance. It was a pleasure and a bit mind-numbing to observe the judges. It is truly challenging to comprehend all the vehicle details and the depth of knowledge one must possess to properly examine and grade each vehicle in the specific class.

Christy and Carolynn take advantage of the Griot”s Garage car wash A portion of the concours featured a Historic display and was themed Rally & Off-road Competition. Another section within concours was the Rennbow Rainbow. This grouping section featured rare paint-to-sample colors in addition to other rare or unusual colors and liveries. A significant announcement was made during the concours. The President of Princess Cruises, John Padgett, unveiled a Taycan in Princess Cruises livery. This Princess Taycan will be given away at the end of the year. For the time being this Taycan is housed at the corporate offices of Princess Cruises in the Miami metro
area. I briefly spoke with the Princess Event Manager about a possible GCR activity with the Taycan in attendance. Throughout the week attendees had a chance to speak with vendors and sponsors in the main exhibition hall. The PCA store was open with different merchandise options nearly each day. This was akin to shopping at a new store every day for Porsche-related wares and regalia. This presented frequent opportunities to meet and visit with PCA members from across North America. Seventeen Gold Coast Region members attended, participated and volunteered in the overwhelming number of events. On

one early morning, three Gold Coasters joined several NY Metropolitan Region folks for an early morning drive on the Pocono twisties! It was a nice little hour run, quite early in the day, before the scheduled activities began. When my 944 began smoking, I “found” Second Gear Performance on the Pocono Region website. Second Gear owner, Meinir (Ineil) Razak invited me in to look under the hood. After an overnight stay, he had my 944 ready to go for the Autocross that day. Ineil patched up a small oil leak where the oil was burning off, causing the smoking. Fortunately, it was a minor and inexpensive repair. Ineil and the Second Gear team were well prepared for an influx of cars during the Parade week. With this great support, Parade felt like a huge family reunion where no one was a stranger. Cue Sister Sledge, “We are Family”! The final day of Parade 2022 began on Saturday morning with the 5K Run/ Walk. Our esteemed member, Steve Kidd, participated in the run, Men’s 70+ class and took a Second in a time of 33:21:00. That is a 6 minute 40 second per kilometer pace. If you prefer, it is equal to running a complete mile every 10 minutes, 44 seconds. Steve was flyin’! Finally, it was time to line up for the Parade of Porsches. The Parade route took participants roughly 22 miles via their Porsches to the famous Pocono Raceway. Completing a smooth lap around the track we followed nose-to-tail back to the resort. It was great driving within this group of Porsches of all years and models. We were escorted by the police for the entire trip. Intersections were blocked, traffic lights were traversed legally, and the entire entourage was led by the Pocono Raceway Pace Car. It wasn’t a hot lap, but a true fun lap of Pocono! Upon our return, a substantial number of Porsches participated in the recreation of the 70th year Porsche Clubs Worldwide
anniversary logo in the Kalahari parking lot. It was a tremendous feat. The PCA Executive Director, Vu Nguyen, had previously laid out (in chalk) graphics to assist in lining up our Porsches for the photo opportunity. Two GCR members vehicles were part of the “logo of cars and peeps”, Ms. Carolyn Ditrichs with her Porsche Boxster, and me with the 944 Shadow, were able to line up with everyone for this enjoyable happening and unique car recreation. Once every car was properly staged in their specific spot, an overhead image was captured of the entire scene the with a high-flying drone (of course flown with full regard to PCA regulations). It became the signature photo for the 66th Parade. With a few final events scheduled, we moved inside for the Volunteer Party and lunch. It presented everyone the opportunity to recognize and sincerely thank the 700+ volunteers who organized, managed, and worked the event over the course of the week. The 2022 Porsche Parade concluded Saturday night with the Reliable Carriers Victory Banquet, yet another scrumptious dinner. It was a long and highly enjoyable week of all things Porsche that flew by quickly. The 66th Porsche Parade featured product reveals, a grand celebration of 70 years of Porsche Clubs Worldwide, seemingly unlimited scheduled and unscheduled activities, and the chance to meet and converse with like-minded Porsche enthusiasts from around North America. Everywhere you looked, you could observe and examine amazing Porsches in all shapes, sizes, years, and colors. It is an annual Porsche family reunion! Members reconnected with their Porsche car pals, not seen since a previous parade or longer. Everyone is helpful and openly willing to share a quick story, a laugh, or simple insight into the ongoings of the Porsche marque.
The Exhibitor Hall Allow me a special shout out to Second Gear Performance for taking care of my Shadow so quickly despite their already busy schedule. To the rescue! Next year, the Porsche Parade will be in Palm Springs, CA June 18-25, 2023, as a west coast visit will be in the offing. A great small side story is that the prize for the longest distance drive to Pocono Parade was awarded to Mike Holtzclaw in his Guards Red 911. He DROVE a total of 4447 miles, from Alaska! For driving this distance on Michelin tires, he won the award of new tires from Michelin. That must be a record, one which most likely will not be broken. The 2024 Parade will be substantially closer to home. Start planning now as Porsche Parade ’24 will be held in Birmingham, Alabama. The scheduled dates are June 9-15, 2024. I certainly plan to attend another Porsche Parade. While Palm Springs may be a Parade too far (there is no auto train to the west coast), Birmingham is almost our back yard, and only a 10–12-hour drive, depending on your route. We hope that we can bring a large Gold Coast contingent to Birmingham in a couple years. Simply, ya gotta go!

PARADE AUTOCROSS Article by Steve Kidd, GCR Autocross chair Photos by Christy Spangler Going to a Porsche Parade and competing in Autocross (AX) is the equivalent of participating in the Superbowl for a participating Porsche owner. Autocross is the pinnacle driving event during Porsche Parade week. It is the only competitive driving option that is offered at Parade. Other driving options are guided tours and very casual sightseeing opportunities while seated behind the wheel of your Porsche. Autocross competition at Porsche Parade is serious business and offers a winning driver incredible bragging rights for such an accomplishment. With Parade in the Poconos, autocross participants were given an exceptional experience. This year the AX was held at Pocono Raceway, not far from the host hotel, the Kalahari Resort. Pocono Raceway a short twenty-minute drive, eleven miles, from the host hotel. This raceway has a large oval NASCAR track as well as a twisty road course where the AX was held. The Porsche Parade Autocross event spans two full days.

This year, as with most parades, the many stock classes, and some production classes (mostly the older and lower horsepower cars) ran on Wednesday. The remaining classes, which consisted mostly of the newer and higher horsepower/modified Porsches ran on Thursday. This year’s course was one of the best in recent memory. It was very safe and had lots of runoff room if needed, so you could go fast… but not too fast…and it was easy to navigate. As proof, there were very few off-courses. Most of the team GCR; Steve & Dottie Kidd, Christy Spangler, Lee Walton, and Carolynn Ditrichs ran on Wednesday. Ernie Revuelta with his newer wellprepared Cayman S, ran on Thursday. So how did we do, you may ask? For the answer and times, go to the Parade website and view the results. We will tell you there were four 1st place awards for GCR members. The trophies are exquisite. The Parade website also has an extensive photo gallery, so you can see hundreds of
AX action shots and the awards ceremony. Within the AX photo gallery there are many familiar faces. One of the Parade dinners is the Autocross Awards Banquet, usually held on Friday night. Trophies are formally presented in a spectacular fashion, accompanied by an impressive array of AX photographs. It is thrilling to receive the respective class award and have an action photo presented on the big screen at the same time. Our hats are off to PCA parade AX committee chair Danny Saxton, PCA National AX Chair Paul Kudra, and the local PCA regions (Poconos, Metro, and others) that handled timing and scoring. These folks and Regions developed a challenging course design based on models that worked well locally. The entire committee did a fantastic job. There were countless volunteers involved with the two-day autocross event. Specifically, he Parade Team AX were all easily recognizable. They wore Gulf Blue polos with the embroidered PCA National AX logo.
Ernie Revuelta in his Cayman S
Lee Walton on course in her Boxster This year presented some new challenges. Parade 2022 commenced with a completely new AX class structure. Many former classes were combined, resulting in a significant reduction in the total number of classes. GCR will be adopting the new National class structure for the 2023 AX season. There are quite a few items which makes a parade autocross different from a regional event. It’s so much fun if you want to be part of a world-class event and are up for a challenge. In some years, members of the Porsche family do demonstration runs which is a great bonus at Parade. Location: Each year, the location of the Parade moves to a different part of the country. In most cases, the AX site is at an airport, racetrack, or other large and open areas that provide a fabulous venue to set up a great course. Next year Parade moves to Palm Springs, California, with the AX site at another local racetrack. In 2024, the Parade will be in Birmingham, Alabama. Rumors are the AX might be held somewhere at Barber Motorsport Park. Organization: As with most things done at the National level, good organization is key to a successful event. Coordinating a team of folks that work well together is paramount. Great planning is started years
in advance, and contingencies are in place. Key people know their roles and work thru any challenges. This is exactly what they had. Level of completion: The Parade AX can bring out the best of the best from each region. PCA tried to eliminate single-car classes, and some groups had a wide variety of performance potentials. Whatever class folks were in, you could tell they were out to win. To keep things fair, there is an impound area that cars must go to after they finish all their runs. Competitors must open their hood and trunk, and fellow competitors can inspect for improvements not allowed in a particular class. If any competitor thinks a fellow competitor has a specific non-authorized modification, they can file a written protest (with a $100 cash fee) with the Protest Committee. If the protest is upheld, the filer gets their $100 back, and in most cases, the competitor with infractions is disqualified.
scope and complexity. This year everyone could see their run times via an LED display, a timing slip provided not only at the finish but also on a manually updated chalkboard and electronically via a phone app. Awards: As mentioned before, the AX awards banquet and trophy presentation were top-shelf. The photo gallery presented was well done, but if you didn’t attend, visit the Parade website, and see the action. On a final note, registration for our next AX on September 10th in Sebring is open now. Remember to register on https://clubregistration.net/.
Structure: Similar to local events, everyone that runs must do a work shift. Anyone that skips out on a work shift is disqualified. Driver meeting, course walking, staging, and grid are similar to local events, but each driver only gets four timed runs. Everything is just bigger in Steve Kidd preps the 944 Aug 2022

PARADE CONCOURS An Award-Winning Acquisition by Randy Moss, GCR member Randy Moss and his wife, Michelle, are from the Mid-Atlantic area, where they have been PCA members with the Chesapeake Region for many years. After purchasing a home in South Florida, they joined Gold Coast Region PCA, but they also retained their membership with the Chesapeake Region. Randy has collected and shown cars for many years. He specializes in European cars and has been involved with multiple automotive clubs, including PCA. His retirement from the vehicle storage business in Baltimore allowed for the move to Florida. It was in Baltimore before moving south that Randy came across a 1997 911 Cabriolet (also known as a 993) stored in his facility. He was familiar with both the car and the owner, so Randy struck a deal with the owner of the 911 in order to add it to his personal collection. Following a satisfactory pre-purchase inspection, he bought the Porsche 993. Within a few days after the purchase, he and Michelle drove it to the Poconos for the ‘22 Parade. It was their first drive in the Cab to Parade! En route, the odometer flipped the 30,000-
The recently acquired 911 being judged mile mark, which they took as a good omen of things to come. Randy knew from his prior knowledge of the car and the previous owner that this Porsche was “clean.” Sensing a unique opportunity, he entered it into the Concours d‘Elegance event at Parade. Staying offsite from the host venue, the Kalahari Resort, Randy was up very early at 5:30 am to perform a superficial cleaning. He washed the road grime and
The Stuttgart Level of Achievement Award Winning 1997 Porsche 993 Cabriolet
dried the 993. When he began this simple cleaning process, the car was still wet from an evening of rain. With a refreshed Cabrio, Randy and Michelle headed to the Kalahari resort at 7:00 am. At the Kalahari, additional prep was added - yet not to the extent that many other participants were giving their respective vehicles. The Moss 911 was entered in Group 1: Preparation PP04T class. This was the largest class of entrants for the Street Preparation category and would prove to be a very competitive class. Upon announcement of the results, the Moss’s and their 1997 911 Cabriolet had achieved fourth place overall with 233.7 points. (Note: Their 993 rated only 1.1 points behind the first place 993 at 234.8 points. It was a very tight competition, indeed!) They were recognized with the Stuttgart Level of Achievement. Randy was pleased and surprised to learn that their 993 Cab placed fourth with such an exceptional honor. Randy says that this car has potential, which is an understatement. The car has become an immediate “awardwinning acquisition”! Congratulations!

His parents left Cuba in the 70’s when they were fleeing communism with their respective families. His parents met in the US and married young in 1983. Dad, Pedro was 25 and Mom, Jorgelina was 21 at the time. Pedro is the eldest of three followed by his sister , Diana, and then his brother, Carlos Alberto. Pedro, Dad is an entrepreneur and continues to be in the business of fresh produce. In 1999, the Orama family moved to Costa Rica to solidify the farming and logistical operations of Dad’s export/import business. Pedro was 12 years old. The kids were enrolled into the British School of Costa Rica. Pedro attended this school from seventh grade to the end of high school. In December 2004, he returned to South Florida at the age of 19. It was late 2009, when met “the girl” and fell in love. In 2012 they were married with this year they celebrate their 10th year
anniversary. Wife, Carolyn, son Adrian (8), and daughter Alyson (4) reside in West Kendall. Of course, the family would not be complete without their additional members; Bailey (11-year-old Havanese Dog), and Flashy their Quarter horse. It is a great family of six. : Joining GCR shortly after acquiring his first Porsche, a 911 Carrera, Pedro immediately immersed himself into the deep end of the Porsche community pool. In his first major event, he accompanied the Gold Coast Region on the Fall Tour to North Carolina last October. At the time Pedro met Ed Kohly and Ian Gerada and was treated to an awesome weekend of driving and legendary Porsche fellowship. Per Pedro, “I’ve had an opportunity to meet lots of folks from diverse backgrounds. It’s awesome to be a part of the action where cool cars and people come together to hangout.” The trip was a blast with great roads, beautiful accommodations, and fun peeps. Certainly, the Blue Ridge Mountain roads

in western North Carolina lend themselves to great Porsche pleasure driving. As Pedro suggests, “The mountains are calling, and I must go!” Pedro Luis Orama’s Porsche of choice is a 996 in Ocean Blue Metallic with Graphite Grey interior. What he considers to be a true analog modern-classic. He acquired his Carrera in June 2021. He is the second owner, and the 996 has only 22,868 miles on the odometer. It qualified as an awesome purchase for his first 911. This Porsche 911 was his original dream car as inspired by the introduction in the opening scene of his favorite movie: Gone in Sixty Seconds. Way back at the turn of the millennium (year 2000) Pedro was 15, he set a lofty goal. Pedro put a poster of the 996 above his desk to remind him what he wanted one day. Talk about setting and then achieving your goals, Prodigious! The 996 is far from stock as Pedro has upgraded the vehicle both thoughtfully, and tastefully. Modifications include: Bilstein PSS10 Performance Suspension System, Fabspeed Porsche 996 Carrera XperTune Performance Software, IPD Intake Plenum “Competition”, a genuine 997 GT3 82mm Porsche Throttle Body, BMC Air Filter, the Fister 996 3.4 Sport Muffler Exhaust Modification and Exhaust Tips. The exhaust tips are ceramic coated in Titanium for better heat insulation. He has also acquired a Genuine OEM Porsche Roof Transport System for road trips, as we all recognize that luggage and storage in the 911 is substantially less than the current SUV’s and past American road cruisers.
There is no doubt that these mods have added substantially to the ride quality, handling, performance, and versatility of his 996. With the Fister exhaust there is both improved exhaust flow and a super sound note. Pedro suggests that this is the way the car should have sounded from the factory, not too much, just right. As with many owners, Pedro is making his 996 special! Pedro, or “P” as he is called by his cousins, is most often seen with son Adrian in the back seat of his 2000 Carrera 996 during various events in and around the south Florida Porsche community. They go everywhere together. Adrian is seen smiling every mile as dad drives, squeezes the throttle, and makes the car roar. The Orama family is always doing fun things as well. They enjoy the farm life, riding Flashy their Quarter Horse, driving around in their golf cart in the Redlands, vacationing in Tennessee and Jensen Beach. Spending time together making memories. It’s all fun with the fam. Professionally, Pedro has been involved in the Food Service Equipment industry since 2012. In 2013 he received the esteemed industry designation as a Certified Foodservice Professional from the North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers. In 2017 Pedro parted ways with his employer at the time to start his own company, Orama Foodservice. He was also enrolled in his second semester of a master’s program. It was a tumultuous time. Successfully completing the requirements for the advanced degree, he earned his Master of Science of International Real Estate from Florida International University July 28th. Wife, Carolyn, soon after gave him the news they were expecting a second child.. In quick succession it was new job, start a company, obtain an advanced degree, add to the family. Tumultuous indeed!
Pedro became father of two when Alyson was born nine months later in 2018. Soon after, Pedro became a licensed Real Estate Broker in the State of Florida and founded Orama Realty. His sister, Diana, is a licensed realtor transacting under the brokerage. Pedro continues focused on Orama Foodservice, which is a Restaurant Equipment Spare Parts Business serving many fast-food restaurant operations throughout the Caribbean and Central America.
Pedro and Alyson out for a ride on Flashy The Orama family is aligned on the calendar uniquely as well. The girls, Mom Carolyn and daughter Alyson were both born in April, and the boys Pedro and Adrian in August, so all “A” months but still separated by the monthly spelling and gender ;-). Following the fall mountain tour with GCR, Pedro got to experience his track-day dream at the behest of Diego Ribadeneira at Motorcar Gallery in Ft. Lauderdale, He continues attending cars and coffee at Imperial Moto founded by Matt McKenna. He enjoys the drives at the suggestion of GCR Member Ruben Fuentes with a bunch of other Porsche Enthusiasts. Pedro will frequent Porsche & Pancake events with GCR and many other Porsche related happenings in the South Florida area. He caucuses with
a Porsche group named Vintage Vices of the Miami metro area and has met a ton of great folks. According to P, “I’m trying to express my gratitude for all the experiences I’ve been able to live and enjoy, and for the developing friendships, all thanks in large part to my car!” What does he enjoy most about his car? Simple, DRIVING HARD! The roaring horses behind his ears come alive above 4,000 rpm. The favorite Porsche of all time is “his”; the 2000 996 C2 Gen 1, acquired at a bargain value. He aspires for a track car someday, a GT3. He would also appreciate the opportunity to include a rebuilt air-cooled 911 to his dream collection, and maybe a birthyear Turbo, a 964 C2 or a 993 S. For everyday use, his next 911 will most likely be a 992. These are big but also achievable goals. Put up a few posters P. While neither the Porsche Experience Center (Atlanta) or Porsche Track Experience (Barber MSP – Birmingham) have been visited, he would love to experience a European Delivery. As for event participation, he was an attendee at the April 2022 DRT in Miami and will most likely join a Rennsport Dragon Rally this coming October in the western North Carolina mountains. Pedro ‘P’ Luis Orama joined GCR in 2021 right after obtaining his 996. He’s quite happy to have joined the Porsche family, and Gold Coast Region is equally ecstatic that the Orama family joined Porsche. Keep smiling Adrian, dad loves to drive you around with you in that Ocean Metallic Blue ride of his!

YOUR VOTE COUNTS! By AJ Moffitt, staff writter It’s almost that time again! Every two years, the Porsche Club of America, Gold Coast Region, holds its elections for the Board, and this year December 31st is when the current Board’s terms will end. Board Members include a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, four Directors, and the Past President. There are also standing committees and special committees, with both of these needing Committee Chairs to ensure the proper execution. But what does running for a Board Member or Committee Chair position entail? Can anyone run? Below are some important things to know about how members of PCA can run for a Board position or Committee Chair position with the club. What are the requirements of each of the four Officer positions? •
•
•
•
20
President – The President is responsible for attending all Board of Directors meetings, in addition to representing the club at the National Board of Directors meetings. Vice President – The Vice President shall fill in for the President if the President is not available. Additionally, they shall help the President with administrative items. Secretary – The Secretary is responsible for keeping the minutes of all meetings, including the results of all votes. This person also is responsible for maintaining all nonfinancial records. Treasurer – The Treasurer is responsible for managing all monies, debts, obligations, and assets of the club. This person ensures monies are deposited, and bills are paid accordingly. The above explains the general responsibilities of the four Officers though other responsibilities can be added as necessary. The elected Officers, the elected Directors and the last Past President shall constitute the Board of Directors of the Club and they are responsible for the proper conduct of the administrative affairs of the Club, the proper functioning of the committees, and shall insure compliance with the Bylaws. With regards to the Standing Committees, committees may be added as deemed necessary. Typically, there are eleven standing committees, each needing a Committee Chair. These are: • • • • • • • • • • •
Nomination Historian Membership Website and Electronic Media Official Publication Autocross Driver’s Education Social Club Race Safety Bylaws
There is also a 3-person Nominating Committee, assigned by the President, which includes the Past President and two other members who are appointed by the President. This group is responsible for nominating individuals for all offices, in addition to accepting nominations from club members.
To run for any of the above Board Member or Committee Chair positions, you must meet the following criteria: •
•
•
You must be a member in good standing. Membership status includes active, family-active, associate, or affiliate member. You must attend at least three (3) Board meetings in the calendar year. o Contact a Board member to request and obtain an invitation and Zoom link to the meetings. You must be nominated for a position by either the Nominating Committee – or – by a club member in good standing who has nominated you to the Nominating Committee.
What are some other items that the Board Members and Committee Chairs participate in or assist with? •
•
Board Members vote on items pertaining to the club. This includes how money is spent, or donations are made. These individuals and Committee Chairs organize and run the various social activities that the club oversees, including but not limited to events for Autocross, Drivers Education, Juniors Events, social gatherings, and more.
If you meet the criteria and are able to run for a position as a Board Member, what are the next steps? Contacting the
Nominating Committee is an important step if running for a position. Are you interested in running? If so, contact Steve Kidd, Nominating Chair at Steve_Kidd@ bellsouth.net, today. You can find full details on running for the Board of Directors and other policies of the club by reviewing the Bylaws, which can be found online at: https://www. goldcoastregion.org/gcr-bylaws-2019/. Do you want to be more involved in the club, but you don’t want to run for a Board Member or volunteer for a Committee Chair position? Don’t worry! There are plenty of opportunities where you can
help! Volunteers are always needed for the club. Each of our events is as wonderful as they are because of passionate members, just like you, who volunteer their time and resources. You can volunteer for events that are posted, or you can even suggest an event to run on your own. Club events are voted on during Board meetings, so even if you don’t want to run for a position, if you want to suggest and host an event, you will need to attend a meeting. Connect with Christy Spangler, Social Chair at ChristySpangler@yahoo.com, to make a suggestion for an event.
Chair is all about. Join other PCA members at one of the Board meetings. Remember, it’s not just the cars, it’s the people!

DE - A SHORT COURSE By Mark Johnson, DE Administrative Chairman
How many of us have seen a three-legged stool? Imagine you have such a stool, but then remove one of the legs and watching how long the stool stands on just two legs. It falls over, right? A person may be able to sit for a while, but long-term comfort and ability to sit becomes untenable. PCA Drivers Education is similar in the need for three legs to stand and be viable. We must have a track to run our cars, we need drivers, and we must have qualified and skilled instructors. Without each of these three key groups, our DE program can (and has) suffered. Track availability is a serious concern with the demise of PBIR and the heavy booking of both Sebring and Homestead by various groups. Driving instructors are hugely important, and if you don’t have enough, the load becomes heavy, especially with many drivers new to the DE environment. Without DE drivers and their cars (the newbies, solo and advanced solo, i.e., the folks who pay for the privilege) a financially viable event becomes a serious losing proposition.
Here is a link for their event at Club Registration: https://clubregistration.net/ events/event-details.cfm?event_id=12477 Suncoast has additional DE’s scheduled as follows:. Sept. 10-11; Oct. 1-2; and Nov. 18, 19 & 20 – Instructor and solo Fri-Sat, Students on Sunday (special guest Ross Bentley, Speed Secrets author). All Suncoast DE events are listed “ClubReg”. Also, we look to find new drivers who are interested in a GCR DE program. While we won’t have a track event soon, there
is much to be learned in a classroom or meeting scenario. We expect to offer DE training on car prep, general DE knowledge, and track day knowledge. Generally, these classes (two or three) will help a person new to DE prepare both themselves and their Porsche for driving on a racetrack, under control, safely. We are looking to crawl before we walk, run, and drive quickly at Sebring, Homestead, Road Atlanta, or any of several quality tracks in the southeast.
GCR DE program is being examined. We are looking top to bottom, left and right, even inside out. We are benchmarking other PCA Regions, our friends at Suncoast Region in the Tampa Bay area for example. Suncoast runs a quality DE. They hold 7-8 events at Sebring each year to much success. Our simple goal is to bring a fun, safe and financially viable program to the members. As we have no track time scheduled for the balance of 2022, we highly recommend that Gold Coast members who like to drive quickly in their respective Porsche automobiles sign up with the Suncoast Region DE for August 6th & 7th. TECHNICAL WIZZARDRY
Alternative? Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
If you read one of my recent articles, I questioned whether full-electric vehicles (EV)s were really better than internal combustion engine’d (ICE) cars, looking at the PROs and CONs of each one. My conclusion was that they were not really better (yet) but I really didn’t delve into whether there are other alternatives. I think there are … and I’m convinced and have been convinced for many years that it will involve Hydrogen. Alternative? The whole world is being rushed into battery-powered cars and conventional wisdom believes that they are a perfect for our future. Some large auto-makers such as Hyundai, Honda and others, including me, don’t buy it. During the past months Hyundai has been running a world-wide public relations campaign citing the advantages of an alternative source of electrical power – fuel cells. Even though fuel cell technology has been around for decades it has never fully caught on. A fuel cell generates current from a chemical reaction between oxygen and hydrogen. Oxygen, from the air, reacts with (compressed) hydrogen from a storage tank aboard the vehicle that can be replenished at a filling station, like gasoline. The beauty of the fuel cell is that, even though it creates an exhaust, since it’s a chemical reaction between oxygen and hydrogen, that exhaust is just (pure) water.

And, just like EVs, there are reasons not to embrace hydrogen. Up to now, hydrogen has been extracted from natural gas in a process that emits greenhouse gasses, as Elon Musk strenuously argues, although attempts to produce “clean” hydrogen are under way from quite a few enterprises which feel very confident that they will succeed. Another drawback at this time for consumers is the overwhelming lack of refueling infrastructure. And yet the fuel cell does have one incredibly appealing feature: unlike charging the battery in an EV, a fuel cell vehicle can be refueled and moving again in minutes. That’s of particular interest in industrial and defense applications. Electric vehicles are appealing for military and industrial applications because of their stealth capabilities to the former and because of zero-emissions in enclosed environments (warehouses) to the latter.A convoy of electric military vehicles barely makes a sound when compared with their gas-powered counterparts, but they won’t be finding many charging stations in battle zones. GM’s Chevrolet Colorado ZH2 offers a potential solution, because it can run 400 miles on a tankful of hydrogen that can be quickly replenished at the base using a refueling tanker truck or by using hardware that can produce it’s own hydrogen in the field.
Similar logic is also at play at large warehouse-dependent companies such as Amazon which just announced a deal with an important hydrogen fuel-cell company (PlugPower). Amazon will purchase 23% of the company and start using its hardware to power some of its forklift trucks. The fuel cells will be swapped into battery-powered forklifts that now must sit idle many hours a day while being recharged. By using hydrogen, Amazon will be able to continue using low-noise vehicles that don’t emit toxic exhaust fumes indoors, yet only need a few minutes to replenish fuel and continue work practically uninterrupted. These two examples are niche use cases, but they do serve to demonstrate that there is still room for the hydrogen cell. Porsche is hedging its bets, though. On one hand it has fully embraced EVs. It has been producing the Taycan for a couple of years, the all-electric Macan is on its way next and there are multiple electrified prototypes of Porsche’s different models being tested; but the 911 will not go full EV any time soon, it will become a hybrid inspired by the 919 platform, although it expects that a whopping 80% of its lineup will be electrified by the end of this decade. On the other hand, as I explained in another of my recent articles, Porsche has committed many of its resources in the development of eFuel. Porsche also considers another importance percentage: 70% of all Porsches ever produced are still on the road. They acknowledge that many of today’s cars still run on gasoline and simply removing them from the global fleet isn’t a tenable option for a variety of reasons.
A cleaner-burning fuel is an important improvement on its own, but there are other advantages to eFuel. For starters, since it would be refined in the same way as existing fuel, it could be used in ICE with no adjustments. No retrofitting necessary. Porsche says that the current pilot plan costs hover around $10 per liter of eFuel. Within the next 4-5 years they expect that the costs could come down to $2 per liter ($7.50 per gallon) which is comparable to the cost of gasoline in many European countries today. Either way, the element of the future is sure to be the first element in the Periodic Table of Elements, and the most abundant resource in the Universe: Hydrogen.
For more information on Hydrogen Cells, EVs, ICE and more, please visit my website: www PedrosGarage.com. Happy Porsche’ing,
Pedro
Porsche is very clear that eFuel is not hydrogen. Porsche is not looking at fuel cell vehicles. They state that the main reason is weight. eFuel is instead a derivative from hydrogen. The process begins with electrolysis, which splits water intro hydrogen and other gases. From there Porsche captures carbon dioxide from the air and combines it with hydrogen, to produce synthetized methanol. Porsche tacks the “e” on the front of eFuel because it foresees using renewable electricity resources to handle the electrolysis process. That’s why Chile was selected for the pilot program: wind turbines in South America can produce up to four times the energy of similar setups in Germany. The big advantage of eFuel is utilizing existing CO2 in production. It “closes the loop” using a byproduct of internal combustion engines to then fuel them in the future. Porsche predicts a “wheel-to-wheel” CO2 reduction of 85%.
