President’s Corner First and foremost, I want to wish every member and their family a Happy New Year! 2020 was filled with a number of challenges both for our club and for each of us individually, but I’m sure we will overcome these difficulties in the New Year. We cannot overlook that the COVID virus was the biggest single problem last year and has severely disrupted the Club’s Calendar. We are trying to make a comeback in 2021 by returning several events to the Calendar. Porsches and Pancakes has resumed as our monthly breakfast meetings and our Thursday Evening Socials are back on the Calendar. On January 17th the run to Islamorada will be held, and I’m sure it will be a big success as it is every year. Now that a COVID vaccine is available, I have high hopes of our resuming more events. That is of course if we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot! What I’m talking about is that we all know we’re part of the Porsche Club of America, and we are governed by their rules and regulations. Among those regulations are specific guidelines for any event under the auspices of the PCA, covering insurance and COVID waivers. For the most part, insurance is self-explanatory: any events where cars are moved around, including tours, Autocross, and Technical Events must be covered by liability insurance. We at Gold Coast have a similar set of guidelines as it relates to COVID. Any member or member’s family attending a PCA event must, MUST have signed the COVID waiver. This can be done when you register on Club Registration for the event, or the waiver can be signed when you arrive at the event, but it must be signed. Your Board of Directors and the volunteers who facilitate these events would prefer that each event be visible on Club Registration and that you sign the waiver as part of the registration procedure. Doing so will lead to less work on our part and less disruption for you. The COVID Waiver for smaller events such as Porsches and Pancakes will still have to be addressed and signed at the event. In an effort to meet the guidelines from now until PCA lifts the COVID waiver restrictions, every Event Coordinator will be required to
have COVID waivers available and signed by the attendees. It will also be their responsibility to ensure that social Peter Olliviere, President distancing be maintained. My focus in 2021 will be on strengthening proving that even with four doors, it’s our membership, and creating new and still a Porsche. The Specific Interest interesting Club activities. I will be Groups (SIG) will be coordinating presenting to the Board of Directors events specifically for their groups, several possible changes during the sharing each group’s experience in the coming year in order to embrace this focus. For instance, our Board of Directors Kassette, including Tours, Autocrosses, and Social Events. We will need your meeting has always been open to all help in getting this going! If you are members. The problem is that we don’t interested in creating a group, contact me really advertise it to the membership. In at: president@goldcoastregion.org. the past only a few members usually with a special interest were aware of it. Editor’s Notes Gold Coast members were treated to a year’s end outdoor social at Tradewinds Park. Many new members attended their first GCR event and learned more about PCA. Our junior members were trained on concours judging and put to the test with the guidance of our PCA national judges. A great start to our future PCA members! Gold Coast has a rich history in the concours area and the PCA Juniors program is a great way to keep the tradition alive. I would like to thank the photographers who have provided coverage of our events. I hope you enjoy the “Perfect Trifecta” article and photos that accompany the story. We also have the same coverage for the “PCA Juniors” story. We are always looking for interesting

stories about our Porsche automobiles; 9 Auto Motion has provided a great article for your reading pleasure, “Improving on Perfection.” Thank you to all the members who have been submitting articles. Another great article that was submitted by Pedro Bonilla about his adventurous trip to the Sebring race track: “Sebring Hates My Car!” Check out our updated calendar with new events for Gold Coast and also Gulfstream. With Gulfstream becoming the newest PCA region, its new officers appear on page 22. We have also posted a flyer for their first event on page 7. PCA will be sending more information about the formation of the Gulfstream region.
As you read this newsletter several hundred PCA members will be at the 48 Hours at Sebring PCA Club Race. I hope you are also at the event with us. Sponsored by Champion Porsche, PCNA, and many other sponsors, this yearly event has become the largest PCA club race in the world. This year will be a bit different because of extra health precautions but the committee from national, Suncoast and Gold Coast region have worked hard to make the 28th annual race safe and enjoyable to the more than 400 who attend. More stories and photos as we return from Sebring. Enjoy your Porsche and your PCA club,

A Perfect Trifecta Article by Steve Kidd
T
hree (3) events in 1 day!....this was the perfect way to end 2020 with an outdoor activity that combined a Hagerty Youth Judging exercise, a meet & greet and a car show. Throw in some door prizes, socializing, great weather and some really cool Porsches, and you have the recipe for a perfect day. This event was supposed to take place in April, however due to Covid-19 the date was moved to June. As it turned out, June was no better and the circumstances dictated that we postpone this event indefinitely until we could get a confirmed reservation. Additionally, we needed to make adjustments to assure we could comply with PCA Covid-19 protocols. That window of opportunity came in November and we were able to secure a shelter at Tradewinds Park for December 19th . No just any pavilion...we were able to book the Atala Shelter (aka the Corporate shelter) at a bargain price. The Atala is the biggest shelter in the park and boasts 37 picnic tables, 6 grills, 275+ parking spots and lots of grassy area to spread out. Due to Covid-19, this was a minimum touch event, with masks and social distancing required and no food/ beverage supplied by the club. However, attendees we encouraged to bring their own food or drink. From all indications everyone was thankful to get out and enjoy their Porsches and the company of other Porsche owners.

Lee Walton shares Boxster facts with the Junior Judges Here is how the day’s activities played out: 9:00-11:00 Hagerty Youth Judging exercise. After checking in the 20+ juniors and providing them with a Hagerty hat, t-shirt and name badge, the juniors were given basic instruction on judging, the time requirements for each component and how the process to judge all 4 cars would work. Soon after, the juniors would meet their coach and get much more detailed instruction on where to look and what to look for. The cars selected represented different models, generations and body styles. There were front, rear, and mid engine models as well as coupes, convertibles and SUV’s, specifically a 1985 944, a 2001 Boxster, a 2012 Cayenne and a 2014 911 Carrera
Kassette | Feb 2021
The juniors were divided into 4 groups and after hearing the car owners description of the model and the highlights of their specific car, went to work finding areas that would detract from a perfect score. The evaluation sheets were relatively easy to navigate with only 5 areas to grade and a score of 1-5 in each category. After each car was judged, the score sheets were gathered and tallied. After all the adding was done, the juniors were given the final results and asked to provide ribbons to each car owner (and of course thank them). The 1st place winner was Cynthia Fluhart-Diaz’s Racing Yellow 911. 11:00-1:45 new member meet and greet. New members were introduced and if they preregistered, got to pick up a GCR name badge and t-shirt. They also got to meet a group of the established members, socialize and enjoy seeing lots of different Porsche models. Additionally, announcer Steve introduced new GCR board members who were present and handed out lots of door prizes and goodies. 1:45-3:45 A distanced car show with people’s choice awards for the top 3 cars. Around 25 Porsches participated and the final tally revealed the following trophy
winners: 1st Place- Herb Weinberg 2021 red turbo S coupe, 2nd place-Chris Gleason 1976 emerald green 911S targa and 3rd place Pascale Weinberg 1987 Venetian Blue 911. These events could not have happened without a host of helpers to make sure that all the pieces fell into to place, including, but not limited to, seeing that Covid-19 waivers were signed and other PCA protocols were followed, making sure that the PCA juniors had fun and learned how to judge 4 different Porsche models, greeting new members and welcoming them into the club, and seeing that the Porches in the car show were properly distanced and all participants could vote for their favorite “peoples choice”. A huge thanks to the following: Hagerty Insurance; They are the ones that came up with the Junior judging concept and put the progam together, complete with T-shirts, hats and name badges for the juniors as well as score sheets and training materials Car owners: These members offered up their cars to the Junior Judges and shared the cars history and their passion for this model Porsche:
Cynthia Fluhart’s Porschetta awarded 1st place by the Junior Judges Thanks to Lee Walton (Boxster), Cynthia Fluhart-Diaz (911), Christy Spangler (944) and Paul Laya (Cayenne)
Paul Layas Cayenne being inspected by junior judge
Junior Judge Coaches: These members helped the juniors understand what to look for when judging a car. The level of experience and talent they offered was exceptional and hats off to: Fred Kohly, Paul Raben, Joaquin & Juliana Samper and Steve Kidd. Volunteers: These were the unsung heroes who helped with anything asked of them, but by far the most important duty was to stay at the shelter entrance, greet members, provide hand outs / information and assure Covid-19 waiver compliance. Many of the folks mentioned above assisted with volunteer efforts, however it is important to mention others that helped out; including but not limited to: Jay,Alex and Jeazette, Jerry and Tonia, Lee & Rosemary, Sean, Ed & Dawn, Carolynn and Peter G. Dottie Kidd: Spent days organizing and co-coordinating every detail. Who else could pull off 3 events in 1 day! Continued on page 14

Autocross Update
Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair
Our 1st AutoX of 2021 is now history and from the feedback we got, the event was outstanding. Thanks to all the participants and volunteers that stepped up and helped solve our worker shortage. We did have a number of surprises that tested our ability to adjust on the fly and luckily turn lemons into lemonade. The first curve ball we encountered was a change in location. Originally we were scheduled to run on the concrete strip opposite the paddock, however the site was changed by the track to the skid pad. Not a bad deal in my opinion, however we needed to notify participants of the change. About the same time as the notifications went out, cancellations started coming in, but most were not due to the site change. Autocrossers tend to be a resourceful and helpful bunch and thankfully everyone stepped up and filled in the gaps for a job well done. Everyone got 10 runs, and for those that wanted, a track tour...and most of all everyone had a great time. Check the other page of this article for pictures and insight on this autox As many of you have seen, Covid-19 has changed the way we run AX events. Social distanced course walking will be available and masks required when necessary. If you have registered, but did not sign the on line CDW and PCA waiver please go back into club registration to sign. A copy of the driver meeting notes and self tech form will hopefully be sent out to all paid registrants a few days before any event. An AX registration is not considered complete unless you sign both the PCA general waiver, COVID waiver, as well as any requirements the track/venue has to enter the complex. To continue offering a world class AX program we need a new site. This could be a BIG parking lot, air strip or similar piece of pavement in the Tri-County area to hold our AutoX events. In the past we have used shopping center lots, sporting and gaming venues, and school/government parking facilities. We most recently used the BBT Center parking lot which was great...big, centrally located and reasonably priced. A repaving project put an end to that lot ...hopefully temporary, but it very well could be permanent. What we need is an “in” someone that has a connection to a suitable property and can help us get our foot in the door. Do you know of a site? Are you the person with the “in”? Please call me at 954- 292-3915 if you can help finding a new AX site. In 2020 all of our AX events were at Sebring in conjunction with Club Race or a regional DE. While this has proved doable, members have expressed a preference not to drive so far. Preferably, the site should be no more than a 1 hour drive from North Broward/South Palm Beach.. Tentative AX schedule for 2021 Event #1 1/09/2021 @ Sebring: Results are posted on the GCR website, along with class champions from 2020 Event #2 2/06/2021 @ Sebring: Club race AX challenge. Our only PCA member/Porsche only event. Great competition Event #3 5/22/2021 @Sebring: Very similar to event #1or a surprise location... Event #4 tentative: Possible “piggy back” on the Zonefest AX at Muscle Car city in Melbourne or another club event or a new surprise location in Broward. Summer break Event #5 9/11/2021 @ Sebring or ??? Event #6 10/09/2021 @ Sebring or ??? Event #7 Tentative Mid November. Location TBA possibly FAU or ??? Most of the above dates & sites are subject to change due to weather, availability and factors beyond our control. Watch for emails being sent out often. News, reminders and 2021 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre-register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2021 series is planned to be 5-7 events, depending on site eligibility. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in over half the events in the same class. Each competitor’s top finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards may be presented. • No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • For 2021 please remember to be Covid-19 conscious. This means Covid waivers, social distancing, masks and other appropriate safety protocols will be enforced. • Questions? call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196

Gulfstream, PCA’s New Region
Jerry Daily, Gulfstream president As we begin a new year and look back to see 2020 disappearing in our rear view mirrors. I am happy to inform you that Gulfstream did get approved by the PCA EC on December 21/2020. We are official and eagerly awaiting the completion of the many steps that PCA has to preform to setup a new Region. In the mean time our webmaster Dale/Charles (he does so much work we have to give him two names) Brundige has been busy with www.Gulfstreamregion-pca.org. With the help and support from the BOD he has created a website we are very proud of. Please check it out. We have slowly eased back into Porsches and Pancakes and Thursday Socials using CDC guidelines and are in the early stages of planning some driving events.

Part of what I love about Porsche (as I’m sure you all do as well) are the lines - beautifully designed - makes you always want to look back at it, maybe a second time, perhaps a third. According to MerriumWebster (M-W.com) there are many definitions for the word “line”. The one that describes this image for me is “the course or direction of something in motion”. Even though Mitch’s 964 is parked, the double-yellow street markings, the tilted horizon and the height of the palm trees, not to mention the shape of the 964 all speak motion to me. Ready, set, GO! Mitch took this photograph using an iPhone 11 Pro. I really appreciate all the great submissions - please keep them coming!

Sebring Hates My Car! … but I love Sebring! by Pedro P. Bonilla (Suncoast Florida PCA) As I start my preparations for the 2021 48 Hours at Sebring (under COVID-19 Protocols), I think again about what happened one year ago on my way to the 2020 48 hours. I’ve said it in previous articles and I’ll repeat it here: Sebring hates my car! If you’ve read my other Sebring-related articles you’ll remember how my car has: • lost clutch function (slave cylinder gave up the ghost) • had a full coolant leak • blown out the rear plastic rear window on the convertible top • blown the engine (lack of lubrication – cylinder 5) I had convinced myself that I wasn’t being singled out because a bunch of other people also had issues at Sebring. A wise man once asked: “Do you know why there’s the 24 Hours of LeMans and the 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring, but only the 12 Hours of Sebring? ‘cause there ain’t a car nor driver that can last 13 at Sebring!” Those things had happened to my car some 10 and 12 years ago. Fast forward to 2020. I’m heading to my favorite track; you guessed it: Sebring. This time, not to run but to work. I am Chair of Tech & Impound for the 48 Hours at Sebring PCA Club Race. My Co-Chair and I are responsible for providing tech support to the National Club Racing Team (Scrutineers and Stewards). We have to organize and run the Tech & Impound which includes, among other responsibilities, running the scales for the racers. In order to do that we arrive early to make sure that all is in order, including the “circus tent” under which we operate. Having packed the digital scales and all other necessary equipment the night before, I hook up the little track trailer to my Boxster and head on down to Sebring. (This is the first year I head on down to Sebring, because I had moved to Odessa a few months back. Before, from Weston, it was “head on up” to Sebring). It’s 9:30 AM on Wednesday morning in late January 2020 a beautiful day if ever there was one. Cool 60F weather and not a cloud in the sky. I stop in my driveway and decide to put the top down. I also don my favorite “Pedro’s Garage” orange hat, and finally take off. Traffic is light on SR54 as I make my way east towards I-75. The same is true for I-75 heading south. I quickly come to the speed limit and set the cruise control. All is good, I think to myself, and settle into my comfy, well-worn driver’s seat. About 10 minutes later, as I run in the leftmost of the three lanes, the car in the center lane, just ahead of me runs over some debris on the road and lifts it in the air. I instinctively raise my right foot and hover it over the brake pedal even though it looks like a harmless piece of cardboard which now flies onto my lane. I hear a loud WHACK! I guess it’s not a piece of cardboard but nothing else happens so I relax a bit. All of the sudden everything goes dark! I can’t see a thing and something has hit me VERY hard on top of my head! I feel dazed but the instinctive spatial awareness ingrained

by many, many hours on the track tells my brain that it’s OK to get on the brakes and turn left to get off the road. There was no one immediately behind, so I do that, still not being able to see forward. As I finally come to a stop in the median, I open the door to get out of the car, and I catch a look of my face in the rearview mirror. The right side of my face is literally covered in blood, which is still flowing but what my brain focuses on is my missing hat. I get out of the car and immediately start looking for my hat. Searching the road toward the north I finally see a speck of orange on the median, next to the guardrail about 150 yards behind me, and immediately head over to retrieve my hat. I get out there, pick it up, but decide not to put it on because of all the blood and head back to the car to figure out what has happened and whether it’s drivable. I walk in front of the car and finally realize what occurred. The debris was a piece of 3/16” plywood that first hit my right headlight, breaking it and then lodging itself between the top edge of the front bumper and the hood. At 75 mph it must have moved towards the center and released the security latch and the main latch, sending the hood towards the windshield as if it were a parachute. The two gas struts did nothing to stop the hood’s movement. They were both sheared in two. When the hood hit the top of the windshield, the protruding 24 inches or so bent back and that’s what whacked me on the head. The metal Porsche crest was what cut my head (I think). At the same time the two sun visors were smashed as well as the two mesh windscreens inside the roll hoops and the clear windstop between them! I am convinced that I am here writing about it because 10 years before I had replaced my steel front hood with a carbon fiber one (saved 25 lbs). That’s why it didn’t break the windshield and didn’t crack my skull! I owe my life to carbon fiber! I start to wonder how I am going to get the car back on the road, and then it occurs to me that maybe the carbon fiber can be bent back and maybe the latch can hook. To my surprise, although the structural underside of the hood is mush, the top layer is intact, so after I straighten it I manage to close it with a click! Wow! Now the adrenaline is wearing off and the pain is setting in. I
get in my car, find a towel and press it onto my head to try to stop the bleeding. I’m thinking more clearly now but my head really hurts. For a moment I think about returning home but quickly come to my senses knowing that there is much to be done and many people depending on me and the equipment I’m bringing to the track. I decide to keep going and look for a clinic to take care of the head wound. As I arrive in Bartow I see a walk-in clinic, pull in, walk through the glass doors and before I say anything the lady at the counter says: “We can’t treat you here. You need to go to the ER! Should I call 911 for you?” I said: “I just want you to see if I need stitches because I can’t see the top of my head”. She replied emphatically that any head trauma needs an ER, which will be better equipped than a clinic. So, I get back in my car, still holding the bloody towel on my head, and get back on the road, looking for the next ER. I finally get to the town of Sebring and check into the main hospital to get my head looked at since I was still bleeding. They check me in, I wait 15 to 20 minutes, and the doctor and nurse come to see me. The doctor checks me out, glues the top of my head together because, she says, stitches wouldn’t hold and she decides to run a CT scan of my head. They put me in a
wheelchair and roll me into the radiology suite and run the scan, then they wheel me back to the ER. As I’m waiting for the results, the nurse and I chit-chat a bit. I’m anxious to get out of the hospital and she asks where I’m going in such a hurry. I say: “Sebring!” She then says: “Honey … you are at Sebring!” And I say: “I mean the racetrack at Sebring” She then asked if I was a racer and as I’m about to answer, another nurse opens the curtain and beckons my nurse over. A few minutes later she returns and says: “Honey, I got good news for you: If you’re a racer you don’t need no helmet, ‘cause you’s got a haaaard head! Everything looks good and you can get back on the road.” After that, I was able to check out and make the short drive over to the track. I get there just as the gates are opening to let the teams in. Other than a bad headache over the whole event, I was fine. I still have the scar where no hair grows, and I think that I probably have the Porsche crest embossed backwards on my head for the rest of my life. People pay a lot of money to get it on their seat’s headrest. I got mine for free!
