Peter Olliviere, President
Have you ever had a quiet moment that allowed you to reflect on the people you spend your time with? I have recently had the opportunity to do that reflection, and the truths that came from that reflection were truly eye-opening. It seems that the people I spend my time with and enjoy their company are divided into two groups, pre-Porsche Club and postPorsche Club. As I have been a PCA member since 2000, the pre-club group must have been around for over 20 years. These are people that I knew from before I moved to Florida, including old friends that I worked with, or went to school with those long years ago. Only one member of this group lives in Florida, but not
close enough so that we could step out for a beer. If you are lucky enough to have friends like that who are close by and still part of your daily life, you should treasure them. You might be wondering where I’m going with this. Well, you know the saying, “it’s not the cars, it’s the people.” No truer statement can be made about the Porsche Club. That second group of friends, the post-PCA group, has grown to become the primary group of people that I socialize with. First, the sheer number of PCA friends far outnumber the pre-PCA group. And not just in numbers but in actual time spent. As an example, I just returned from a weekend in Naples, a non-PCA weekend I might add. But the attendees consisted of PCA friends. Why is that? If you think about what a friend is you realize that it’s a person with whom you
share a common experience or interest, and when you are a PCA member you are exposed to a wide variety of people who fit that description to the tee. At the same time, you get to explore new things that you might never have done before, and that experience takes place in a group that is enjoying the adventure as much as you are. As I said the cars are nice, but the people are better. “Escape to the Cape” is coming up fast. August is right around the corner so it’s time we talked about specific events that will be taking place. High on that list is the Car Show. As we did last year, we held a car show that was very successful. We intend to hold the show again and improve it with lessons learned from last year. For one thing the Club has secured a new PA system that will allow everyone to be clearly heard at the car show and at the dinner, solving a problem we had last year. The event itself will be moved onto the upper level of the parking garage, which allows us shade from the Florida sun and shelter in case of rain. Like last year the show will be held Sunday morning and all Escape attendees’ cars are automatically entered. Specific information about classes and awards will provided over the next couple of weeks. The countdown has started. SEE YOU AT ESCAPE, with your post-PCA friends.

It is Porsche party time! Each year around the beginning of summer, the PCA community gathers in zone and national events to celebrate with social and competitive activities. In this issue we focus on the Zone 12 activities from Zonefest that took place in Melbourne, Florida at the end of May. Gold Coast was well represented and our members placed well in autocross and concours. GCR members do well in these specific disciplines from our solid programs at the club level. Additionally, check out the beautiful 356 on our cover taken at Zonefest, and don’t miss the interesting back story on the history of its color. Next month, the results from our national Parade will be published. We expect that a few of our members brought back some well earned awards and a few stories to share.
Next year will mark the 60th anniversary of Gold Coast Region. As a preparation for the anniversary in 2023 we have included a review of our club history written by Mike Joffee and Steve Kidd, GCR Historians. Contributions were also made by Stan Pearlman and Lee Wood. As we approach that special celebration, we will hold events featuring speakers who will review some of our great history. Our members created this club and our history, a story that is uniquely ours. The Finding Gold article spotlights Ken Fengler, a GCR Past President who helped to develop many of our programs such, as Drivers Education and the 48 Hours of Sebring club race. Thinking of DE,we have included a few DE dates on our calendar regarding DE at Sebring hosted by our friends at Suncoast Region.
You may also wish to check our a short article to update the status of the GCR DE program. As you venture off on your summer vacation, please remember that the Kassette is always looking for Porsche adventure articles along with the photographs that help tell the story. The text should be one page or less and the photos should be high resolution. Beyond member submitted article we are looking for fresh suggestions of articles that you would like to see, and member suggested TECH articles for Pedro to develop. This is your club magazine, so send us your ideas for new content. I hope you enjoy your summer,

Start Your Engines What kind of Porsche driver are you? What I mean by that is the following. 1: Are you a Porsche driver who only drives your car when the weather is perfect and only for special occasions? 2: Do you drive your car daily, to and from the office or simply for milling around town? Or 3: Are you like me, a bit of both? When I got my first Porsche, I could not get enough of it. I drove it every day, sun, rain; no matter what, I was driving it. After a while I slowed down a tad and now I only drive the 911 when I have the time to really enjoy the car and can spend time really getting to know all its characteristics. No matter what your driving habits are, there is one thing I can say with certainty: these cars grow on you and the more we Porsche lovers get to drive our cars the bigger our smiles become. Welcome to the second half of 2022 (already)! Let’s get out and drive.
New Member Numbers As of June 15th, 2022, our membership stands at 3,067, including 2017 primary members, 1,050 co-members, and 279 PCA Juniors. Thank you and welcome to all our new members for joining this exciting region. Remember, if you’re the primary member, you can register a co-member.* Co-members are welcome to share in your PCA experience at no additional cost. Additionally, they’re invited to all PCA events and receive their own user account on www.PCA.org. *Co-members must be at least 18 years of age to register.
Did You Know We have quite an active Facebook Group with just over 350 members. Please join fellow members for discussions and general Porsche chat by requesting to join the group at www.facebook.com/ groups/gcrgroup/. opportunity at the American Muscle Car Museum (AMCM) maintenance building. Others that came in early visited a few of the local attractions, such as the Kennedy Space Center just a few miles up US 1 in Merritt Island.
Zonefest – The Zone Festival It took two years to outlast the pandemic challenges. After waiting it out, the ten Florida Regions and the Puerto Rico Region of Porsche Club of America came together to celebrate ZONEFEST! Zonefest is a gathering of the Regions for each PCA Zone. Our Zone 12 typically holds an annual event; however, with health and safety concerns, the 2020 and 2021 gatherings were cancelled. With improving conditions, Zonefest 2022 was held over Memorial Day weekend in Melbourne, Florida. Gold Coast Region was represented by roughly twenty members of the total, which approached 200 attendees. Many folks arrived early Friday afternoon— primarily the concours participants—to take advantage of the car washing

The official kickoff party for Zonefest ’22 was a welcome dinner hosted by Porsche Melbourne. Attendees were treated to a fiesta-style taco bar and a live band. Zone 12 Region participants mingled and reconnected over cocktails, including the requisite margaritas! Porsche Melbourne is a Premier Porsche dealership and they had quite a few previously owned vehicles on display in the dealership. Porsche Melbourne’s new car sales volume is roughly fifty Porsches sold every month. With the exceptional demand and diminished supply, these new vehicles are delivered to their customers almost immediately after arrival at the dealership. Hence, the showroom was festooned with newer and previously owned PCars, the latter in excellent condition. Unfortunately, during the dinner the clouds opened, and it poured buckets (rain, no hail) on all the cars recently washed. This, of course, was all to the horror of the concours participants. The weather cleared for Saturday morning to bright sunshine and warmth. Concours participants were up bright and early to
prepare their cars again, post-storm. It was a short drive from the host hotel, the Melbourne Hilton Rialto, to the concours site. Oh, and what a venue! Our host location for the concours, and additional functions over the next couple if days, was The American Muscle Car Museum (AMCM) in Melbourne, FL. The Museum contains a privately owned collection of over 350 vehicles. Mr. Mark Pieloch is the owner of the facility. He is a registered pharmacist and founder of a variety of businesses in the pet pharmaceutical industry. Mr. Pieloch’s success in the pet care industry allowed him to begin collecting muscle cars and vehicles of significance. The museum itself is roughly 123,000 square feet of display, storage, and vehicle service. The museum is not open to the public but is used for charitable events. Mr. Pieloch graciously offered access to the museum grounds for hosting multiple Zonefest events. Arriving early to the AMCM, quite a few Porsches were lined up for the concours. Others were parked opposite the concours area for events later that day, or by those who came to the museum to simply enjoy all that Zonefest offered. If one had to guess on the total number of Porsche cars and SUVs at the AMCM, it would approach 125 or more vehicles.
Concours cars were judged by both the volunteer judges and the Hagerty Youth judges. The Porsches were stunning, and both volunteer and youth judges had a tough job indeed. While it wasn’t an overly large collection of Porsche 356 models, those being examined were in a word incredible. Immediately after judging concluded, the AMCM staff offered a tour of their maintenance building. Inside the maintenance building Mr. Ed Dedick, Restoration Manager, talked about how the team of experts maintains the collection of 350 cars. It was during this visit that Zonefest attendees were treated to seeing two Porsche 959s undergoing some form of minimal restoration and repairs. One of these 959s, a Guards Red, was stationed on the top rack of a vehicle lift, awaiting cleanup. The museum had recently acquired the vehicle for roughly $2.1 million through a Bring-A-Trailer auction. This vehicle set a new sales record at BAT when sold on February 14th this year. As it was on an upper rack we did not get to examine it in detail; however, the other 959 (silver) was on the floor and was rolled out of its location for a close look. The 959 was considered by many car aficionados to be the first true super car from Porsche.
LOW. Others are taken out and exercised to a greater extent. It depends on value, rarity, mileage, and the boss’s desire. Seems reasonable to everyone. After finishing in the maintenance building, we returned to the entrance foyer of the museum, where we enjoyed box lunches of a delicious sandwich and chips in the main area of the AMCM. While there, the AMCM folks performed a startup and short engine run of the 1966 Ford GT40 MK1 Alan Mann Lightweight. It is one of two lightweight GT40s built (only 2,160 pounds) and the only surviving vehicle. It is the most expensive vehicle in Mark Pieloch’s
collection, valued at over 9 million big ones. Upon getting fired up, it let out a brief 5-6 second loud roar, commensurate with the vehicle of such vintage. And, of course, we missed getting it on video; it happened quickly. After lunch it was time for the Gimmick Rally. The Rally took participants on a beautiful drive of over 60 miles through different parts of Brevard and Indian River Counties hunting down photo clues. With the concours over as well, the light rain that came in did not dampen the enthusiasm for the rally. It was a fun 2 to 3 hours behind the wheel of our cars.
Beyond examining these two beauties, we also were able to view a few other vehicles in the shop. It was quite interesting to many of the car cleaning “geeks” in attendance to observe the various cabinetry, storage areas, and substantial collection of creams, potions, lotions, polishing tools, and such that are used to maintain the beauty and luster of those vehicle in Mr. Pieloch’s substantial collection. We learned that every car is driven or started at least once per year. Those with substantial significance or very low mileage are only started and driven very short distances to keep the miles Jul 2022

The AMCM hosted us for a light dinner Saturday night. At this time an actual museum area was opened for attendees to wander about. We had only been in the main entrance area for the afternoon events, so it was the prime opportunity to view the balance of the collection of American muscle and multiple Porsche vehicles in residence.
alternating years, Porsche and Corvette clubs set up the respective course. When Porsche sets the course, it is tight, with quick turns keyed toward exceptional handling. The ‘Vette folks like longer straights to display their straight-line speeds. The drivers are of course highly competitive, and Porsche most often claims bragging rights!
Owner Mark Pieloch welcomed us and shared a few thoughts before inviting us to view his collection. As one might imagine from the name of the museum, there were muscle cars in abundance. Fords, Chevys, and Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouths were everywhere. Buicks, Cadillacs, Desotos, and so many other makes were housed in the display area. Beyond the American Muscle, over 40 Porsches were shown. Perhaps the most unique was a 1953 356 Porsche limo! The collection includes six Porsche-Diesel Tractors, and a every GT version Porsche has ever built. Virtually everyone was in awe.
For anyone not on the autocross course, there was a concurrent scenic dine and drive to the historic Dixie Crossroads in Titusville, FL. Dixie Crossroads is a world-famous seafood and shrimp restaurant. As a shrimp lover, it was probably the hardest choice for me to make for the Zonefest weekend: diving fast on a closed course or a fantastic seafood dinner?
The collection includes over 50 Indianapolis 500 Pace Cars and Trucks. We counted the Shelbys, at least 20 Ford GTs, vintage pedal cars, gas pumps, bicycles, automotive neon signs galore, and more auto memorabilia than you could imagine. It was a full evening of photos and talking cars. Arriving back at the AMCM on Sunday morning, the Zonefest Autocross was held on a 1/8th-mile dragstrip on site. A challenging track was set up for the AX participants. Each participant had three runs, and everyone wished they could have had a couple more. Even a couple of the concours 356s participated in the event. Your fellow GCR attendees held their own against the competition! We understand that it is only Porsche and Corvette clubs which get to use the dragstrip/autocross course. In fact, there is a friendly competition between the two clubs. In

After autocross and another light lunch, AMCM hosted an ice cream social. During the social, Mark Pieloch offered the Zonefest attendees the opportunity to drive a 1961 Porsche-Diesel Tractor Junior. YES! We were allowed to drive a restored Porsche Tractor in the lot in front of the museum. Ed Dedick gave everyone a short demo on how to operate the unique Porsche. This was a tremendous amount of fun and the opportunity brought out the inner child in all of us. The AMCM also offered rides in a 1956 VW 23-window Microbus Deluxe. If you follow VW values, you know that the 23-window bug bus is a $100,000+ vehicle. Did we mention that driving the Porsche Tractor and riding in the micro bus was fun and nostalgic? Following a highly enjoyable and very full day, on Sunday evening we headed to the Eau Gallie Yacht Club. The EGYC folks hosted a cocktail hour, banquet, and awards presentation. The Eau Gallie Yacht Club was a beautiful location. During drinks and a sumptuous dinner, we were treated to a gorgeous sunset over
the marina and Indian River. One of our members, Ms. Marlene Smith, wrote a poem about the Gimmick Rally and recited it to everyone following dinner. (Die Porsche Kassette has published Marlene’s poem in this issue on page 17.) A local Porsche restoration shop which specializes in those 356 models, 356 Unlimited, hosted us for an open house and breakfast on Monday morning. 356 Unlimited has the skillset and ability to work miracles with the earliest model of the Porsche marque. They frequently repair, restore, and bring back to original glory those barn and field finds of 356s that are becoming increasingly harder to hunt. Currently under various stages of restoration were four different 356s. It is hard to imagine how they can restore a field find that was smashed into a tree. And yet, they do just that, including a full restoration on one of the 356s that was in the concours and autocross. Their facility was a nice setting for one last gathering before going off in separate directions. Not related to the Zonefest event, but every bit as welcoming, was a Vietnam museum in a warehouse neighboring 356 Unlimited. The owner of the Vietnam and All Veterans Mobile Museum welcomed us to visit. He had quite a collection of memorabilia, weapons, uniforms etc. It was an unplanned but educational visit. It was also a nice and somber reminder and complementary to the day: Memorial Day. As mentioned earlier, our Gold Coast Region was well represented in attendees. Pam and Howard Behar, son Kyle, and their ever-present Golden Doodle, Speedster, were there in the family’s 911 GT3. The car won a concours ribbon, second place 911 Water-Cooled! Carolynn Ditrichs, GCR Treasurer, drove her Boxster to the event and went home
an autocross winner in the S03L class. In SO1L class, Christy Spangler (yours truly) won in her quick 944. For the Gimmick Rally, the Smiths–Gordon driving, and Marlene navigating–won the Spirit Award. A person might have thought they won on the spirit of Marlene’s poetry, but the Spirit winner selection was made prior to the poetry reading. So, in truth, it was a double win for the Smiths! Also in attendance were Walter Sarmiento and his parents (they drove up for Saturday), Althea Pemsel, Lori Renzetti, Bianka (who won the raffle prize of a certificate to attend a Citrus Region Autocross) and Frank Steinfeldt. The key sponsors, including Porsche Melbourne, the American Muscle Car Museum, and 356 Unlimited, were all gracious and highly enthusiastic hosts. Thank you all. Special thanks and kudos also go to the Space Coast Region as the local PCA host, and to Ms. Leslie Sikorski, our Zone 12 Representative! A great effort by all, which led to great enjoyment for all. Zonefest is a wonderful alternative to attending the Porsche Parade. It’s nowhere near the distance from South Florida; it’s a three-day event–not week long—it’s a bit more casual, and it’s quite a Porsche event all on its own. As fast as 2022 seems to be flying by, the 2023 Zonefest will be here in no time.

The Gimmick Rally At Porsche Space Coast A drive to enjoy said the club’s host.
A bakery, a church, a blue slide, a dock, a tank and two lions. Ahh! I want to stop.
What is a rally? What does it mean? Who is the driver? Am I part of a team?
Apartments, houses a flat roof, a steeple, Pastures and palm trees, feeling faint and feeble!
Directions are short like alphabet soup. Maybe just follow that Porsche coupe.
My eyes are crossed, on land is a boat. A this and a that, to finish, I hope.
Rally master instructions, look up and down, go under the speed limit, clues found all around.
Some bonus finds, Florida mulch price, many Dollar stores, and acres of paradise.
Spy the red rooster, windmill and deer, flags on a fence. I am lost, I fear!
This rally of Porsches with hotel end in sight. Twas’ fun in the sun and a frightful delight.

FINDING GOLD “Ahhhh, the stories he could tell…” Member Feature by Mark Johnson
If you want a race story, he’s got a million of them. Ken Fengler has been a Porsche aficionado since he first acquired a 914 as a college student, with a student loan no less. Since that time, he has owned a total of 12 different and unique Porsche vehicles, and to this day has three PCars in his automotive ownership . In addition to several Porsches, he also has a British sports car or two (at least a Triumph TR6 that we know of), and a few motorcycles. To say he’s enjoyed the automotive life would be understating the obvious. But why? The reader may ask. Well, Ken has also been involved in a myriad of automotive driving and racing endeavors ranging from the DEREK BELL MOTORSPORTS Driving School, client programs with Porsche Cars North America, Ferrari, Chevrolet/Corvette, Cadillac, Mazda, and others all over the Western Hemisphere. Currently, Ken is the General Manager and Competition Director for International GT, which features three specific groups of vehicles competing in The Stuttgart Cup,
The Mission Foods GT3 Cup, and The Maranello Cup (www.InternationalGT. net). Additionally, Ken has been keenly involved with Historic Sports Racing (HSR) and the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA). There is more— much, much more. Getting back to Ken’s start with Porsche: it is unique and would not be considered “appropriate” in today’s environment. Yet it is a great story, so we would ask that it be taken with the understanding that times were different. Ken was not from an affluent family, so he was working his way through school in Connecticut in 1975. A chance encounter with a person at the school suggested that he could take out a student loan for his tuition costs. Despite the lack of need for such a loan, regular loan rates were roughly 14-15% at the time, and the student loan was offered at 5%, with no payment due for five years. Being financially astute, Ken realized he could take the loan for some “spending

money” to supplement his part time job as ski instructor. He applied for the assistance and was granted $5,000. Super! Shortly after the funds arrived in his bank account, young Fengler purchased a 1974 Porsche 914 in Phoenix Red. With the money left over, he also acquired an eight-piece drum set from Manny’s Musical Instruments in New York City for $648.60. EPIC. While the 914 was traded for a Mexico Blue 911 Carrera in 1977, he still owns the drums, and he still plays, maybe not as often as he once did. AND, of course, he paid back the student loan when it came due! The second part of Ken’s introduction to Porsche was a bit more impactful in the grand scheme of things. Somewhere along the line in 1979 Ken went to a Porsche Club of America meeting in Connecticut. Ken puts it simply: “I owe everything I have done in motorsports to the Porsche Club!” PCA offered many opportunities to Fengler, and he took them to heart and used them to great advantage. In 1979 Ken was the Connecticut Valley Region (CVR) “Rookie of the Year.” By 1980 he became CVR “Most Improved Driver.” Continuing his progress with the Connecticut Valley Region, Ken took increasingly more important and diverse roles: Program Director in 1980, Track Event Chairman in 1981, and then Region President in 1982. With a move to South Florida in 1983 (he is still in the same home in the Ft. Lauderdale area) he transferred into GCR and is a member in good standing today. With Gold Coast Ken Fengler joined as
Ken’s current Phoenix Red 914. It may not be the original “student loan 914” but it sure looks like it. Program Director and Track Director in 1984, and ultimately Gold Coast Region President in 1986-87. During his presidency, Gold Coast Region was awarded the prestigious “PCA Region of the Year” in 1987! Not to rest on these laurels, Ken was also an approved driving instructor for 11 regions, and an approved Concours judge. All of these experiences and titles gained from going to a PCA Region meeting and getting involved. What came next was where the rest of the story starts. With PCA and Porsche NA connections, Ken was introduced to Mr. Derek Bell. Together they formed Derek Bell Motorsports Inc. The company promoted precision and advanced high performance driving programs and race clinics at more than 14 locations in the US, Europe, and Latin America. It was the first official driving school for Porsche Cars North America. The company operated from 1986 to 1993. The Gold Coast Region DE (drivers’ education) event in late 1985 was held at Moroso (PBIR) and 90 drivers were scheduled to attend. November 3rd was
DE day for GCR. Our Region hoped to bring in a “big name” driver to be the guest chief instructor. Ken was tasked to get the guy. Derek Bell was the reigning World Endurance Champion at the time, driving a Rothman’s Porsche 962C with co-driver Hans Stuck. Ken was told to “bring in Bell.” With great skill, determination, effort, a bit of luck of course, and quite a few phone calls, the penultimate return call arrived. Bell was asked, accepted the invite for a special weekend in Florida and the GCR held a DE with the best driver on the planet! WTG Ken!
Of course, this effort created many additional opportunities. Derek Bell Motorsports led to Palm Beach Autosports, Ferrari Club of America, the Cavallino Ferrari Classic, Justin Bell GT Racing School, and others up to today’s International GT. Ken has been featured in articles from Car & Driver, Porsche Panorama, Corvette Quarterly, Excellence, Speedweek: the list goes on. And then there are the talented drivers he has worked with: Bill Adam, Bob Akin, David Hobbs, Sam Posey, Brian Redman and Jeff Schwartz, to drop just a few names.
There is an article from Die Porsche Kassette written by Mr. Rich Williams for the February 1986 issue that discusses this event and the surrounding happenings of those days. Derek Bell, Westin Fengler (on Derek’s knee), and Ken Fengler at a Derek Bell Motorsports event Perhaps one of the most interesting and fun events undertaken by Ken was his participation in the creation of the Stuttgart Cup and Mission Foods GT3 Cup. In particular, the Stuttgart Cup was conceived as a spec racing event using the highly successful Formula Vee and Spec Miata programs. It was a time of late-model Porsche racing under the name HSR (“Historic Sportscar Racing”), including the Cayman Interseries at Sebring, Road America, Mid-Ohio, Road Atlanta, and Daytona. A Chicago, Illinois dealer, Napleton Porsche, sold roughly 70 Cayman race cars. Interestingly, it was decided to provide each car with a specific historical Porsche livery (such as the Pink Pig, Momo, Shell Racing, Coca-Cola, etc.), and of course all graphically designed/ redesigned by our friend David Schnorr. The year was 2009 and David had long since perfected “wrapping” cars in plastic film to allow such historical liveries to be used on the spec Cayman racers. Successful businessman and Porsche Cayman driver, Bill Ridell, continued to promote both the Porsche Cayman series and the existing Mission Foods GT3 Cup . Ridell hired Ken Fengler as General Manager and Competition Director. Ken’s duties were to secure the various tracks for the competition and to keep the rules and teams in check, preventing rules creep and overly expensive cost to be competitive.

There are so many stories in Ken Fengler’s history as this, each just as interesting and compelling. He has participated in multiple Parade events, Rennsport in Watkins Glen and at Lime Rock. He is a co-founder of the 48 Hours at Sebring, attends WERKS at Amelia, and was the Chairman and founder of the first Gold Coast Region Drivers’ Ed program at Moroso in 1985. We had about 45 minutes at Houston’s on Atlantic and the Intracoastal WW to get the basics; we could have listened for hours. Ken has been married for 42 years to his wife, Maureen. They have two sons, Westin (33) and Garrett (29) with three grandchildren: Rileigh, Kolby, and Aston. Originally from Wallingford, CT the family has lived in the same home in Ft. Lauderdale for 40 years. His current Porsche stable includes a 1975 911 3.0 RSR in Mexico Blue (bought from the feds in a government auction – and most certainly another story), a stunning 2016 Boxster GTS in Black, and a 1974 914 Phoenix Red (recently seen at Wheels Across the Pond in Jupiter – but not his original “student loan” car). Might there be a favorite Porsche? Of course, several! He loves the 904, 906, 917, 962, ’73 Carrera RS. And what is most amazing is that he has had the opportunity to drive them ALL! As with
all this experience in motorsports, Ken has also driven in the 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, and numerous other races. He suggests that he was not the fastest, but the drives were quite fun. We should all be so lucky. At the ripe young age of 66, Ken is not slowing down at all. The International GT series races for 2022 are being held at Sebring, Road Atlanta, Road America, Lime Rock, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen, VIR, COTA, and Daytona International, a busy schedule of mostly monthly events. In between he and Maureen spend time in Florida on the water, and enjoy skiing and travel for business and pleasure. Time spent with their grandchildren is paramount. When Ken crossed the 60-year threshold, his family and friends threw a party of course – a black button with flashing lights announced his “advanced” age. Those in attendance signed a special guest book, but no ordinary guest book. The guests signed and notated a Dr. Seuss book: OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO! Having the opportunity to visit with Ken Fengler and hear a few stories, Dr. Seuss’s words, “the places you’ll go,” are so very appropriate. And it all started with a student loan, a Porsche 914, and a PCA club membership.
Ken drove this 917 in anger at Moroso (PBIR), at the time worth probably $100K, but today worth $1Mil. Would they let him in it today?
GOLD COAST CLIMBS TO THE DANGER
At the movies with PCA GCR by mark johnson
It took 36 years to make the sequel. This is also the exact length of time since the Gold Coast Region won the “REGION OF THE YEAR” from Porsche Club of America. Hmmmm . . . . Serendipity, or coincidence? Hope so… It may have taken some time to bring the Pete “Maverick” Mitchell story back to the big screen, but it didn’t take nearly as long to gather up a large group of Gold Coasters for a private showing of Top Gun: Maverick! Being Porsche car pilots, it should not surprise anyone that we have “a need for speed”! On Saturday June 4, 2022, ninety members of the Gold Coast Region and ten additional Veteran guests attended a special viewing of Top Gun: Maverick at the Cinemark Paradise 24 theater in Davie. It was a late afternoon matinee that brought everyone back up into the danger zone for a bit over two hours of thrilling action, great backstory, a renewed love interest, and surprise – a classic aircooled PORSCHE.
Of course, Maverick (Tom Cruise) reprises his role as the hotshot Navy pilot. Where would we be without this hero, after all? Even Iceman Kazansky is back as an admiral. (Note: There is a great story about how Val Kilmer, Iceman, who has been treated for throat cancer, has lost his voice. How Val “talks” in TG: Maverick lends a special touching moment to the film). The new love interest is an old flame. We’d tell you but we won’t. The lovin’ feeling is still present, along with the Kenny Loggins tunes; nobody has lost it.
unless you’re going Mach 2 with your hair on fire.” Somehow, this seems to apply every time we turn the key left of the wheel on our Porsches. Top Gun: Maverick is simply awesome! Those Rotten Tomatoes guys give it a 97% score. The GCR folks were over the top, perhaps in our own danger zone, on our departure from the theater. It was a great way to spend the afternoon with Porsche People – and the cars, and planes. “Talk to me, Goose” and pass the popcorn.
Even with all the stars, action, and suspense perhaps the biggest star to us Porsche peeps is the 1973 Porsche 911S driven by Maverick’s new/old gal, Penny. It’s amazing to see an incredibly classic longhood carry the lineage of Porsche’s influence in this movie. Top Gun fans will certainly remember the 356 Cabrio driven by Charlie (Kelly McGillis) in the original, and the ’73 911S extends this tradition. To quote Charlie from the first Top Gun: “You’re not going to be happy

DRIVERS EDUCATION
UPDATE for The FAST DRIVERS in our GCR
By Mark Johnson
President Olliviere asked me to take over duties and responsibilities of the “administrative side” of the GCR Driver Education program, the following items have been completed. As DE Admin Manager, the DE Team and I will undertake a full re-examination of the program to be certain we can fulfill the three driving factors of a successful Driver Education event. These three factors are: HAVING FUN, BEING SAFE, AND OPERATING A FINANCIALLY VIABLE DE.
Toward these goals, we have completed the following initial examinations toward our overall success and reintroduction of DE to GCR. 1.
Mtg w/Peter Olliviere, Mike Roblin, and Jake Kooser to discuss and review the existing status of the GCR DE program. Pick up DE documentation from Mike Roblin on the past 2-3 events.
2.
Called and discussed PCA DE efforts with the following people outside of GCR a.
Mia Walsh PCA National DE Chair Person
b.
Leslie Sikorski Zone 12 Rep
c.
Denise Remus Suncoast President
3.
Collecting Competitive DE info from: Chin Track, SCCA, other Car Clubs (Corvette, BMW, etc.)
4.
Call into Homestead Track (tacit approval to schedule a day in Oct/Nov in 2023 from Peter Olliviere at the initial DE meeting). With limited tracks and big demand, we must get on the schedule!
Additionally, we are currently working on the following items. 1.
Calls to Region DE Chairs for referrals and partnerships (Suncoast, Everglades, Space Coast, Gulfstream, others)
2.
Reaching to Instructors and Drivers for feedback and direct input on value (positives and negatives) of GCR events versus DE events for PCA Regions and other DE’s that are non-PCA, like Chin Track
3.
Expect to contact past DE chairs in GCR for their input/suggestions
Mark Johnson has attended the SUNCOAST Region DE June 25-26 in Sebring at SIR to shadow their DE team. The goal is to gain knowledge of how a DE is operated and examination of all the moving parts. It has been suggested that Suncoast runs a high quality and efficient DE program, they will be our initial “benchmark” Region.
Additionally, GCR is investigating two or three “off track” DE introduction and training courses to be held before the end of the year to provide our members with insight into participation in DE, and how to properly prepare both car and driver for such an event.
For those so inclined, SUNCOAST REGION PCA will hold a DE event at Sebring August 6-7, 2022 for GCR members should you wish to get behind the wheel at SIR! Check out and register for the Suncoast event at ClubRegistration.org.

What’s in a Name? Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
If you read my articles, you may remember the one titled “Numerology,” where we tried to simplify the digital nomenclature that Porsche has utilized to designate its models since inception. I’m referring to the partial list of: 356, 550, 718, 911, 912, 914, 917, 918, 919, 924, 928, 929, 930, 932, 934, 935, 944, 935, 951, 956, 959, 962, 964, 968, 968, 980, 986, 987, 981, 989, 991, 992 ,993 . . . and that’s just for the sports cars. But Porsche has also tagged some monikers to some of its icons. Where do those names come from and what is their significance? Carrera This name first appeared on a 1955 356A. This moniker makes reference to Porsche’s success in the 1953 Carrera Panamericana endurance road race held in Mexico. In 1974, the same name was tagged onto the Carrera RS. Since then, the name “Carrera” has become synonymous with 911. In 2004 Porsche again specifically used the name to identify its second supercar: the Carrera GT.
Targa In model year 1967, Porsche first tagged a new version of the 911 as a Targa. Like the name Carrera, “Targa” was used to reference the Italian Targa Florio open-road race in Sicily where Porsche had experienced great success. The Targa was Porsche’s response to the rumors that convertibles could soon be banned in the US market. Therefore, they made a convertible with an integrated roll bar. The Targa Owner’s Manual states: “Someday all convertibles will have an integrated roll bar.” Nowadays they all do.

Turbo In the Spring of 1975 the Porsche 930 Turbo was launched as a turbocharged version of the 911. This model quickly rose to the top of Porsche’s lineup and eventually the word “Turbo” even surpassed its literal meaning of an internal combustion engine’s forced induction, extending to the fully electric 2020 Taycan Turbo.
Spyder Meaning a lighter, nimbler version of a sports car, the first use of this moniker by Porsche came in 1955 when they introduced the 550 Spyder. The name came from the horse-drawn carriages of the 1800s. The lighter, less cumbersome two-person carriages with tall wooden wheel spokes somewhat resembled spiders and the name stuck. Later, automakers would tack “Spider” or “Spyder” on their special, lightweight sport cars. In modern times, Porsche calls the top-of-the-line Boxster the Spyder, which is equivalent in performance to the Cayman GT4. And then there’s the legendary 918 Spyder.
Boxster In 1993 Porsche introduced the Boxster Prototype at the Detroit Auto Show. It eventually went into production in 1996 as a two-seater convertible. The name Boxster is a contraction of the words “boxer” and “roadster.” “Boxer” references to the “boxer” engine, so-called because each pair of pistons move in and out like a boxer’s gloves.
Cayman The Central and South American caiman is a powerful yet agile crocodile-like predator. In 2006 the Cayman joined the convertible 987 Boxster as its coupe version. They both evolved into the 981 and today into the 982 (718) versions of Porsche’s highly successful two-seaters.
Cayenne Debuting in 2002 the name is in reference to the cayenne pepper, a bold choice for this new SUV with a fiery nature.
Taycan The first all-electric Porsche takes its name from two terms of Turkic origin, translating approximately to “soul of a spirited young horse.” Porsche says that the name also reflects the brand’s roots and its future simultaneously, with the horse reference reminiscent of the iconic silhouette on the Porsche crest itself. And in Japanese “t aikan” roughly means “physical experience”–something you won’t fail to agree with once you sit behind the wheel of a Taycan.
For more information about Porsches and more, please visit my website: Pedro@ PedrosGarage.com. Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro
Macan The name comes from the Indonesian word for tiger, acknowledging the fierceness that lies beneath the vehicle’s elegant exterior. The Macan is today considered the sportiest of compact SUVs.
Panamera Again, referring to the Mexican Carrera Panamericana, the name was assigned to Porsche’s four-door transporter.

The History of Gold Coast Region by Mike Joffee and Steve Kidd, GCR Historians
Thanks to longtime members and past presidents Stan Pearlman and Lee Wood for contributions. It all started in November of 1963 when a small group of Porsche owners met at the Space Satellite Motel on a then-barren oceanfront strip of AIA in Pompano Beach. The outcome was the formation of the Gold Coast Region (GCR) of the Porsche Club of America. GCR would become the 53rd region created for a club that would eventually grow to almost 150 regions and the largest car club in the United States. In 1964 GCR had less than 100 members. However, as of 2022, Gold Coast Region has over 3,000 primary and associate members. GCR has undergone several territorial changes over the years and at one time GCR had up to 11 counties in southeast and southwest Florida. As of 2022, our region is geographically smaller and currently encompasses Monroe, Dade, Broward, and part of southern Palm Beach County, In the early years, socializing was the main attraction with monthly dinner meetings for the initial group of members. The GCR newsletter, Die Porsche Kassette, began publication soon after the formation of the Region and continues today using the same name. It didn’t take long for the Region to become very active and very competitive. A rally once in a while, some Concours and a lot of autocrosses were the major activities. So active and competitive was Gold Coast that after only 4 ½ years of existence, GCR hosted the 13th annual Porsche Parade, named Sonnenfest (renamed “Soggyfest” after a week of mostly rain), which was held at the Colonnades Hotel in Palm Beach. From 1963 to 2022, Gold Coast enjoyed a rich history of national awards and regional successes. At the 1970 Parade, Buz and Donna Hahn, along with their daughters, won the PCA Family of the Year Award. This same award was again bestowed on GCR members Jack and BJ Fuller and their three children at the 1973 Parade. At the 1999 Parade, Gold Coast finished out the century with 2 prestigious awards, with Mike and Linda Tarter and their children winning the Family of the Year, while Mike Joffee was recognized as the PCA Enthusiast of the Year. This was the only time in the history of National Parades that a member of the same region won these two coveted awards at the same Parade. The PCA Family of the Year Award was next awarded in 2011 to Alex and Vivian Ortega, their 2 children and large extended family. The most recent PCA Family of the Year honor was bestowed on the Kidd family (you know them as Steve and Dottie) in 2015. Other memorable PCA Parade achievements include Gold Coast winning the President’s Trophy three times. This is an award
given to the Region with the best attendance based on Region size and distance traveled. The Long Distance award has been won by Gold Coast members twice. As a Region, GCR’s biggest national achievement came in 1986 when GCR was crowned PCA Region of the Year. This award was presented at the 1987 Parade and reflects the teamwork and leadership that existed then and carries on today. Other national recognitions have been awarded to GCR in the areas of Membership Growth and Public Service. Gold Coast Region also has quite a few members who have served in PCA National positions and made lasting contributions to PCA. Some of the more notable are since 1970; there have been 4 different members of Gold Coast Region who have served on the National Parade Competition Rules (PCR) Committee. For a 10-year period, the PCA Zone 12 representative has come from Gold Coast. (From 1994 to 1999 it was Anita Canfield and from 2000 to 2003 it was Ruben Ledesma). Ruben also went on to serve as PCA National Historian from 2005-2006, PCA National Treasurer 2007-2010 and PCA Vice president 2011-2012. Ruben was also instrumental in the organization of various Rennsport and PorschePlatz events from 2004-2012. Steve Kidd was the most recent GCR member to serve as Zone 12 representative from 2016-2017. In 1972, GCR held its first multiregional event, called the Florida Parade. This event was modeled after the highly successful Rennfest multiregional event hosted by Peachstate Region. In 1974 the event was renamed Sonnenfest and became very popular. This name was used through 1995 and in 1996 GCR joined forces with the Sun Coast Region and the event was renamed Zonefest. This event is still very popular today and is typically held each year on Memorial Day weekend. Currently, Zonefest host regions move around to different parts of the state within Zone 12 each year. For 2013 GCR was again the host region, in conjunction with GCR’s 50th anniversary. In 1984, GCR began a Drivers’ Education Program, more commonly known now as D.E. GCR was one of the first regions in the country to have a DE program. In 1993, GCR hosted a National Tech Session which was named Sonnentech and was held at the Gunnar Racing facility in Palm Beach. GCR had a remarkable group of speakers consisting of Kevin Jeannette (the owner of Gunnar Racing), Vic Elford, Bruce Jenner, Brian Redman, and Derek Bell. In 1994, in conjunction with the Sun Coast Region, GCR held its first National Club Race at Sebring. In 2022 GCR celebrated its 29th club race which is now known as the 48 Hours of Sebring Club Race and is “unofficially” the largest club race in the world.
Goldcoast Region’s 2011 Tour to Parade in Savannah
The 48 Hours of Sebring Club Race attracts club racers from all over the world, and also includes an Advanced Solo (DE) and Autocross. Additionally, the “48” typically has charity fund raisers, and the 2 largest beneficiaries have been the Ronald McDonald House and the Boy Scouts of America. As an example, in 2021 GCR’s portion for Ronald McDonald House of Miami was $11,000 and was the topic in the “From the Regions” section in the PCA Panorama. For those who have never experienced a Club Race this is a “must do”: note that the 48 Hours of Sebring Club Race is usually held the 1st weekend in February every year. In June 2003, the national Porsche Parade was held at the Saddlebrook Resort just north of Tampa. While the official host of this Parade was the Sun Coast Region, many members of Gold Coast were involved as Chairs and GCR was certainly responsible in part for the success of this parade. In 2019, the Porsche Parade again came to Florida . . . this time to Boca Raton! GCR members were responsible for the huge success of this event and served in many key positions. Besides volunteering, GCR members also took home lots of trophies in the competition, especially in autocross, which was held on the track at PBIR. On November 16, 2003, GCR had its 40th Anniversary Party with 140 people attending. This was the largest attended monthly social meeting in Gold Coast history. Tom Bobbit, PCA’s National President at the time, was there to do the honors and 19 of GCR’s past 27 presidents were in attendance (three
are deceased). Many other old-timers were there from as far away as Gainesville and Key West. While the 40th anniversary celebration was great, GCR’s 50th Anniversary at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel on November 23 was nothing short of spectacular. Twenty GCR past presidents were in attendance along with 150+ members and guests. The evening was filled with awards, recognition, prizes, entertainment and of course honors for our 50 years of success and accomplishments. Over the past 9 years, Gold Coast Region has enjoyed a resurgence of activities in all areas including new types of social functions, as well as rally/tours, charity events, driver educations (DEs) and autocrossing. New members and older members not previously involved in region administration have assumed leadership roles while veteran members mentor and guide the smooth transition into the future. GCR has also embraced the age of technology with innovations such as electronic voting, and thanks to Covid, board meetings via Zoom. In addition, GCR keeps members up to date via a great newsletter, email blasts and website/social media platforms. As GCR is poised to observe its 60th Anniversary (in 2023), thanks are in order to everyone who has helped make GCR the great region it is. Without this hard work and devotion to the club and its members, GCR could not have progressed from that small band of dedicated 356 owners the diverse group of Porsches and people who currently make up Gold Coast Region. GCR’s future looks great! Stay tuned for future updates as GCR history unfolds. Jul 2022

Back Story of the Front Cover By Mark Johnson Gerald Curts, owner of the beautiful cover Porsche 356 expaines some of the history of ZoneFest and the history of the color of his car. Back many years we used to a multiregional event in Suncoast Region known as WerksFest, and Gold Coast had a similar event known as SonnenFest. I was often the chair of the Suncoast event and Mike Joffee was the chair for the Gold Coast event. After several years of fewer and fewer entrants the two regions got together and elected to have a joint event and called it ZoneFest. Mike and I were co-chairs of that for many years. Great memories!! OK, the color of my little 356 has no official name. The color was chosen by the wife of the original buyer, Dr. Eugene Willie, They lived in Hawaii and the wife loved the color of the water in the bay near their home. She had the paint mixed in Hawaii to verify the color was to her liking; then sent the paint to the Porsche factory in Stuttgart. The factory then sent the paint on to Reuters, the coach builder across the street from Porsche factory and the car was painted with the paint provided by the owner. Ironically, the paint code on the Kardex is 5 digits where all paint codes
assigned by Porsche are only 4 digits. Very unusual, this is not “paint to sample” or “paint to match” which both do have Porsche 4 digit codes. After many inquires I heard from 356 Registry Historian, Jim Perrin. He believes the paint code was assigned by Reuters, not Porsche, which seems to be a reasonable explanation. So, there is no name given to this color in the Kardex, the Certificate of Authenticity, or even the “build data” sheet I received from Reuters. When I restored the car there were many places where the original paint was still in present. The top of the dash under the leather dash cover looked completely untouched, so I cleaned and polished that area and used a photospectrometer to get a color match. In my fairly detailed research I did find a mention that when the car first came out of the paint booth at Reuters, the Germans hated the color and called it fauliges Grün (Putrid Green). So I have adopted that as my “Official Color Name”.

Does this angle make my butt look big? “”
Patrick Ucci submitted this photo of his 1987 930 slick top in original Venetian Blue. He says that he was lucky enough to have the opportunity to have it for the past couple of years.
