DO YOU HAVE MASSIVE VEGETABLES GROWING IN YOUR GARDEN? OR WONKY ONES?

The Grow It Local Awards are back for 2023 and the time is right now if you'd like to get involved.

Grow It Local founder, author and broadcaster Paul West said the success of the awards reflected the increasing interest in gardening.

"Community interest in growing food has exploded, and here at Grow It Local we're all about making growing food simple, social and fun," Mr West said.

The Awards, which include judges such as celebrity gardener Costa Georgiadis of Gardening Australia fame, are also supported by Sunshine Coast Council's Living Smart Program.

Sunshine Coast Council Environment and

Liveability Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said more than 560 members were registered in the Grow It Local community.

Cr Suarez said this showed a rapid uptake since council first partnered with Grow It Local in 2022.

“Growing food at home, schools or community gardens is a fantastic way to foster a connection to nature and healthy lifestyles, and an easy step for residents to live more sustainably within our Sunshine Coast Biosphere.

“Council’s partnership with Grow It Local aims to empower everyone to access skills, knowledge and inspiration to grow food, whether in a backyard, balcony, kitchen or shared garden.”

To enter the Grow It Local Awards, gardeners must:

DO YOU HAVE THE NEXT BIG IDEA?

THE SEARCH IS ON FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF SUNSHINE COAST ENTREPRENEURS AND INNOVATORS.

Sunshine Coast Council, Telstra and Study Sunshine Coast have joined forces for 2023 to back the 2023 Mayor's Telstra Innovation Awards.

With more than $10,000 worth of prizes to share, including the opportunity to work with some of the region's most successful mentors, this year's awards are shaping up to be in high demand.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said the awards generated real ideas that helped the community.

"Last year we saw 10 finalist teams from five schools present an amazing array of creative ideas, including the winners from Suncoast Christian College who invented Bird Bell – a device that emits a radio frequency to deter

birds and prevent injuries by the likes of swooping magpies," Mayor Jamieson said.

"The possibilities through this program are truly endless, and I encourage students to get together with their school mates, form a team and start thinking about that great app or invention. I can’t wait to see what the 2023 applicants come up with.”

Telstra regional engagement manager Matt Thornton said it was wonderful to see the Mayor’s Telstra Innovation Awards power into their seventh year on the Sunshine Coast.

“The awards aim to drive the youth in our communities to look at technology as a tool for innovation, rather than just a source of entertainment and fun,’’ Mr Thornton said.

“We aim to educate the students not only about technology and innovation, entrepreneurship and business skills, but also have them understand that world-class ideas

NO DEAL YET ON REC CENTRE

SUMMER HAS PASSED WITHOUT ACCESS TO THE RECREATION CENTRE POOL AT THE HEART OF THE RIDGES' ESTATE AND IT'S STILL NOT CLEAR WHEN, OR IF, IT WILL OPEN AGAIN.

On February 24, 2023, an Aveo spokesperson said there was little to report just yet.

"Further to the expressions of interest campaign, Aveo are in negotiations with shortlisted parties, working towards facilitating a sale as soon as possible of the Ridges Estate Recreation Facility".

The Recreation Centre went on the market on October 28, 2022, with expressions of interest closing on November 24, 2022.

The sale came after Ridges Body Corporates voted against accepting the terms of a deal offered by Aveo to transfer the venue to the Principal Body Corporate.

A YOUTHFUL LOOK AT BIOSPHERE

LOCAL CHILDREN AND TEACHERS ARE BEING ENCOURAGED TO SIGN UP TO LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR ENVIRONMENT IN THIS YEAR'S KIDS IN ACTION PROGRAM.

Funded by the Sunshine Coast Council's Environment Levy, Kids in Action is an environmental program for school-aged children which aims to grow a culture that values caring for the natural world.

Sunshine Coast Environment Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said this year’s program promised an exciting opportunity for the Coast’s youth to explore the meaning behind our Biosphere and co-create a vision for the future.

“The Sunshine Coast region has joined more than 700 regions in Australia and around the world as an internationally recognised UNESCO-listed biosphere reserve,” Cr Suarez said.

“A biosphere is a place where nature and people live, work, play and learn together in balance and harmony – where local learnings can help solve global sustainability challenges.

“At this year’s Kids in Action program our

young people will explore what it means to live in a biosphere reserve, and the actions needed to protect and enhance it for future generations.”

Cr Suarez said they would then come together to share their learnings with each other, as they investigated and championed the biosphere ‘heroes’ of Country – the biospHEROES.

“These could be people, businesses or organisations, cultural heritage, decisionmaking or system processes, ways of knowing, connecting and monitoring, or the many living and non-living heroes of the waters, land and air,” Cr Suarez said.

“I invite Sunshine Coast teachers and students to join us for Kids in Action in 2023 as we explore our biospHEROES and co-create a legacy for the region’s future that we can all be proud of and others can learn from.”

Registrations for Kids in Action are open until March 31 by searching for “kids in action 2023” on council’s website.

Key dates: Friday, May 5, 2023: Kids in Action Environmental Projects Day; Wednesday, September 6, Kids in Action Conference.

COUNTRY VIBE FOR EUMUNDI GIG

IT'S BEEN 23 YEARS SINCE TIM ROGERS WAS NAMED THE BEST MALE ARTIST FOR HIS FIRST SOLO ALBUM WHAT RHYMES WITH CARS AND GIRLS, RECORDED WHILE ON A BREAK FROM HIS BEST KNOWN GIG AS THE FRONT MAN FOR YOU AM I.

With a career spanning 30 years and a catalogue of fan favourites and critically acclaimed songs, Rogers' long awaited return is here in support of new record Tines of Stars Unfurled, which was released on February 24.

'Tines of Stars Unfurled' is a bookend to Rogers’ classic solo debut of ‘99 'What Rhymes With Cars and Girls'.

It marks the welcome return of his fiddle-and-squeezebox country-blues compadres The Twin Set, and the (slightly more temperate) barstool yarn-spinner’s perspective that made the You Am I frontman

ARIA’s Best Male Artist in the year 2000.

That’s long enough to bring new poetry, wit, and wisdom to the rock’n’roll philosopher’s kitbag as 11 new songs hold hands with their precursors across the chasm of innocence and experience.

Like the first single Been So Good, Been So Far says, "Guess I’m doing OK. How about you?"

Kids grow up, adults split up, parents pass on, some nights look better in than out and somehow, the songs keep getting better.

The Twin Set line-up sees Jen Anderson on violin and strings, Jeff Consi on drums, Davey Lane on guitar and Richard Bradbeer on bass.

Rogers and The Twin Set band will be at The Brewery at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Thursday, March 30 from 7.30pm.

It is an 18+ show with tickets for sale now via Oztix for $45 (+ booking fee).

SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL HAS STEPPED UP ITS FOX PATROLS FROM PEREGIAN BEACH TO MAROOCHYDORE IN A BID TO REDUCE DAMAGE TO NATIVE WILDLIFE.

From March 27, Council officers will be targeting known fox haunts, particularly along the coast, coinciding with one of the more active seasons for the animals.

The autumn trapping season uses softcatch foothold traps placed across selected bushland and private properties, which are checked daily, or continously by cameras.

The European red fox was deliberately introduced into Australia for recreational hunting in 1855 and has been recognised as a signficant contributor to native animal decline across the nation.

Environment Portfolio councillor Maria

Suarez said the latest program would offer some protection for native species.

"Foxes pose a serious threat to unhatched turtle eggs and threaten species such as the endangered Mary River turtle, and green and loggerhead sea turtles," Cr Suarez said.

"They're also a threat to our livestock and domestic animals - especially chickens".

The trapping program will be coordinated between Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, Coolum and North Shore Coast Care and Noosa Council.

If you suspect a fox den, phone 5475 7272.

TALES OF A LESS COMPLICATED TIME

SUNSHINE COAST AUTHOR PATTY BEECHAM DUG INTO HER CHILDHOOD GROWING UP IN ROCKHAMPTON FOR HER LATEST BOOK.

When the dreaded COVID lockdowns hit in 2020 poet and author Patty Beechman set herself a task.

"I determined to publish three books. I knew two of them would be poetry (simply to keep my vast collection all together) and I wasn't sure what the third would be," Beecham said.

"Someone had tagged me on a Facebook group called Rockhampton Remember."

Beecham said she responded by writing a couple of stories about her dad, Canon John Warby OAM, who, as a local Anglican priest, had presided over the marriages of a lot of the members of the Facebook group.

The response prompted the decision to turn the focus on to her own early years and the novel - Growing Up, Rocky: A Rockhampton Childhood was born.

"This is the book that the Facebook Group 'Rockhampton: Remember When' encouraged me to write," Beecham says.

"Without their gentle and persistent encouragement, this book would never have been written.

"These stories are the skipping stones of my life. A little from here and there, until the end is reached. Think of this book like a patchwork quilt, with stories and timelines gently overlapping.”

Beecham grew up living within the five Aboriginal tribes of Cape York, and Rockhampton and Central Queensland.

“This my story of an innocent childhood in a fractured family as we learn to live with each other, only to be torn apart after a tragic accident," she said.

"It's a Coming-of-Age story with my dad, Canon John Warby, OAM, as a community leader and Anglican priest.

"It's a look back in time and reminiscing of a

softer, kinder world, dealing with the changing world of the '70s, and growing up in a small country town.

"It's a story of survival, overcoming bullies, and bringing myself up. It’s an Every Woman’s story."

The story begins in the early 1960s with the family living on the Lockhard River Mission.

The remote lifestyle meant Patty's three siblings were only home for about six weeks a year, spending the majority of their time away at boarding school - in fact it was only when she was four that her whole family lived together.

As society changes, television arrived, and the Pill, so do does the dynamic of Patty's family who tragically face the unthinkable with the unexpected death of Patty's younger brother.

It captures the life of a girl who's Mum, Bunty Warby, ran the local corner shop in Keppel Sands while her father presided over a local congregation and all the events that went with that role.

Beecham says she has been overwhelmed by the local support for the book.

She sold out of her first run of 350 copies in just 10 days and is now well into the second print run, with the book available locally at Annie's Books at Peregian Beach, at Rosetta Books at Maleny or online at www. pattybeechamproductions.com

MOTORWAY PLANS MOTORING ON

THANKS FOR HAVING A SAY

Thank you to everyone who participated in the recent consultation for the Sunshine Motorway upgrades.

Thanks to the community’s ongoing support, we’ve been able to secure $7 million to progress works on the duplication of the motorway, as well as major upgrades to the interchange at Yandina-Coolum Road, and the School Road roundabout.

This most recent consultation period outlined the preferred options, including the duplication of a 10km section of the motorway between Pacific Paradise and Coolum, an option for south-facing ramps at West Coolum Road, and an active transport pathway, as well as replacing the School Road roundabout with a signalized intersection.

I look forward to sharing the results of the consultation with you in the coming weeks, as I continue to lobby for further funding for this vital infrastructure project.

HEALTH, COST OF LIVING AND ROADS

Speaking of results, late last year I asked residents to identity their top three local issues.

While the results were not surprising, that didn’t make them any less concerning.

These issues were health, the cost of living, and roads. Here on the Sunshine Coast, we are not immune from the health crisis, with recent statistics revealing the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Nambour Hospital are among the worst for both urgent and nonurgent wait times.

When it comes to cost of living, similarly, the lack of any relief to increasing costs is pushing families to the brink. What we don’t need are more taxes.

And while we welcome the initial investment in upgrading our road infrastructure, much more is needed to keep pace with the population growth.

Along with law and order, these are the issues you’ve told me are important, and I will continue to advocate for more investment in the vital services that residents rightly expect, and deserve.

HAVE YOUR SAY IN TED'S SURVEY

BE SURE TO LET TED KNOW WHAT YOU THINK BY MARCH 31

Determining the needs and aspirations of Sunshine Coast residents is at the centre of a new initiative by Federal Member for Fairfax, Ted O’Brien.

‘Ted’s Biggest Survey’ is an initiative which invites residents to share their views on local and national issues important to them to help the federal member continue delivering outcomes for the community.

Ted hit the road over past two weeks to hear directly from residents as part of the Ted’s Biggest Survey program which included mobile offices in Maroochydore, Mapleton, Peregian, Bli Bli and Brightwater between February 23 and March 5.

Ted said that listening to local people about their needs and priorities was the most important part of his job.

“Representing the people of the Sunshine Coast is a great honour and it’s a responsibility I take very seriously.”

“Maybe I’m just ‘old school’ with how I view the role of politicians. To be on the ground in the community, especially face-to-face with constituents is the best way to learn what matters most.”

“To my mind, the most important part of my job is to listen and learn to ensure I’m delivering the targeted outcomes and

infrastructure that our community needs.”

“With the community’s help over recent years, we’ve secured some big wins for the Sunshine.”

“To continue fighting to deliver outcomes, I need to know what’s most important to locals, and I’ve launched the biggest survey and will hit the road to find out.”

‘Ted’s Biggest Survey’ takes around five minutes to complete and covers everything from infrastructure, energy, aged care, education cost of living, jobs the economy and more and can be found online.

Local residents have until Friday, March 31 to complete the survey which can also be provided in a hard copy on request.

Head to www.tedobrien.com.au to learn more and complete the survey at http://lbr. al/jeqv.

IS THERE A LINK BETWEEN HEARING LOSS AND OVERALL HEALTH?

THE SIMPLE ANSWERS IS, YES.

Our ability to hear is one of our primary senses and thus has consequences for our broader social, physical, and mental health. When we lose our hearing, our overall health can be compromised.

We often lose our hearing gradually over time, and it can be difficult to appreciate how much our hearing enriches so many aspects of our lives.

Deidré Breytenbach, principal audiologist at Noosa's only independent, locally owned and operated hearing clinic, Noosa Hearing, says, "The hearing loss journey usually takes about seven years before someone gets help."

"Hearing loss is often the last thing on a person's list of health challenges as it is not life-threatening and easy to ignore. But being proactive with your hearing health is the key," Deidré says.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH RISKS OF HEARING LOSS?

Communication is an important foundation for any good relationship.

When your hearing declines, that foundation can be compromised. This commonly results in misunderstandings, frustration, and feelings of being ignored. Most significantly, hearing loss can influence some people to avoid social situations. In turn, this may affect their mental well-being and create an unhealthy situation of loneliness and isolation.

According to Professor Frank Lin from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in the US, hearing loss has also been linked to cognitive decline.

A study in the US found that those with hearing loss experienced a 30-40 percent faster decline in cognitive function than those with normal hearing.

"Our results show that hearing loss should

not be considered an inconsequential part of aging because it may come with some serious long-term consequences to healthy brain functioning," Prof Lin says.

He also found that hearing loss increased the risk of falls.

SO WHAT CAN WE DO RIGHT NOW?

It's quite simple. If you think you have a hearing loss or want to establish a baseline, it's important to book a comprehensive, diagnostic hearing test.

"Everyone over 55 should have their hearing tested," Deidré recommends. A hearing test is the first step to helping your hearing, communication, and relationships.

Treating clients from five to 105, Noosa Hearing is also an approved provider of fully subsidised services for eligible pensioners and DVA card holders.

Conditions apply under the Australian Government Hearing Services Program.

"People are often surprised at the difference good hearing makes to their quality of life and relationships," Deidré says.

Noosa Hearing is conveniently located at 1 Lanyana Way in Noosa Junction. For a personal approach to optimal hearing health, call Deidré at Noosa Hearing at 5231 8867. For more information or to book online, visit noosahearing.com.au.

THE TALE OF FIFTEEN WOMEN

COOLUM THEATRE PLAYERS PRESENTS LES FEMMES SUR LA MER

THIS APRIL

Translated as Women on the Wall, this highly entertaining piece of theatre is described as being a "Kabaret that is loud, proud and in your face!"

It tells the tale of 15 women who share their love of, and talent for music, theatre, and dance to weave a tale of life that is funny, sassy, sexy, stylised, raw, and sharp. It is an honest journey of life exploration.

Described as a white-knuckle roller-coaster Kabaret with “lighter” moments thrown in to balance out those that are, bitter-sweet, raw, real, sad and poignant, all held together by that universal glue of society – humour.

As time hurtles towards the first 25 years of the 21st Century it can seem as if life itself is in a state of flux.

Director Simon Denver says Les Femmes

Sur La Mer explores this flux from a female perspective, theatrically examining the role of women in modern day society.

Let’s face it – our “norms” are crumbling and being redefined as we speak, from gender politics to equal pay, equal representation to the tearing down of stereotypes – life is changing very quickly.

Audiences are expected to walk away having participated in a show that might prick your conscience, touch a nerve, tickle you, slap you . Then make you laugh, feel you've been beaten up, cause you to think, make you laugh even more, cry a little, then beat you up again .. and then cuddle you afterwards.

“Les Femmes Sur La Mer” features some of the finest female talent on the Sunshine Coast, who will sing and dance a fabulous collection of songs written over the last 30 years and will be accompanied by live musicians - Darren Heskes on keyboard and Murray Wall on Guitar.

Held at the Civic Centre in Coolum, next to the library, seating for the show is tables of 8, and you are encouraged to bring snacks and drinks (BYO), and gold coins for coffee, tea and the raffle.

THERE WAS PLENTY OF ACTION THIS MONTH AT MILESTONES EARLY LEARNING IN PEREGIAN SPRINGS AS 25 YOUNGSTERS GRADUATED.

The national childcare provider graduated 3000 children from its School Readiness Program into "big school" this year.

Affinity Education Group head of Pedagogy and Practice Dr Lesley Jones said the graduation ceremonies were a positive step for children heading off for the next stage of their growth.

each played a significant role in each child's progression," Dr Jones said.

"In today's face-paced society, it's easy for milestones like this to pass us by, which is why at Affinity we make sure we step back and take a moment to recognise and celebrate the achievements the children across our 200 centres."

Milestones Early Learning Peregian Springs' Danielle Grundy said it was a proud day for the educators.

“WE BACKED A WINNER!”

We certainly backed a winner when we elected to work with Jodie Curran. Jodie saw in our property precisely the things that our buyer ended up falling in love with. From the beginning, her realistic valuation of our property was informed by the real-life benefits of the home, floor plan, and location. Never did she worry about what else was on the market, or about the fluctuations in pricing of other listings. Jodie has a deep understanding of her local area and exactly what it is that buyers value. She uses her experience to market her listings to the relevant buyer pool. As a consequence, our home was sold within one week - for a price in excess of $200K beyond what other agents considered optimistic. Thank you, Jodie.
