Is Computer Science for me?

Is it possible for it not to be? Society’s use of, and dependence on, computers has increased since their invention so that we’re now in the position that almost every activity you carry out is aided or enhanced by a computer. We need to prepare our students to be aware of the influence that computers have on our lives, to be able to make ethical decision about how they operate and to understand their limitations. Computer science education is all about this, as well as the fundamental skills that pupils need to secure jobs in the digital economy. We are passionate about Computer Science and need other people who are similarly driven to introduce young people to a world that is far more exciting, complex, and rewarding than using a mobile phone or playing games on a console.

What will I study?

You will already know about your subject and be a passionate advocate for computing in all its forms. Our aim is to turn you into a passionate teacher of young minds. You will get extensive classroom experience and expert guidance from our team of experienced teachers. We will support you while you explore different parts of the curriculum and while you learn about the theory of being a teacher.

How can I prepare?

The most valuable thing you can do to prepare is to make sure you know as much of the curriculum as possible. That way you can focus on your teaching practice during your training. Look at the syllabus for the AQA and OCR exam boards and make sure your programming skills are up to scratch. Most schools, including Prince Henry’s, teach Python at GCSE and A’ Level, but a knowledge of SQL, Haskell and some basic assembler would not go amiss. Finally, be aware of new developments, of how technology is shaping the world and of the hype that often surrounds advances in computing technology.

“Technology is changing all the time, and I enjoy sharing my knowledge about the key concepts of programming and challenging students at all ability levels.”

- Olas, Computing Trainee Teacher
