History (36GM) Is teaching History for me?

How can I prepare?

If you have a deep love for History and wish to inspire young people with a “curiosity to know more about the past”, PHSW SCITT will equip you to do just that. Studying History plays a vital role in building a sense of identity, community, compassion and empathy in students; as well as an understanding of the world from a range of perspectives. The skills developed, from analysis to building arguments and source evaluation, develop critical thinking and questioning minds. We have a proud commitment to offering students engaging, stimulating learning experiences in History. If you share this passion for History, we would enjoy the privilege of supporting you as you embark on your teaching career.

You will be expected to have a good level of subject knowledge, particularly in relation to those periods of History commonly studied at GCSE. It would also be beneficial to familiarise yourself with the National Curriculum at KS3 in order to identify and address gaps in knowledge.

What will I study? Experienced professionals with expertise and passion for the subject and a commitment to innovative, researchinformed teaching will support you with care and enthusiasm. You’ll be encouraged to continue to develop your own Historical scholarship and integrate the theories of teaching with hands on experience. You will enjoy high quality subject specific mentoring in a collaborative departmental setting, where you are given time and opportunities to develop and grow. In addition, subject sessions will use a seminar approach to allow you to work with peers to explore pedagogical debates and principles in relation to History, while offering practical support and guidance.
