ow drivers have turned the dial from blue to red on the aircon, it’s time assess where we’re at in the year. We’ve plundered through holidays galore of Easter and Anzac Day and now the fresh frost of winter is upon us.

For mechanics this brings a litany of new problems that befall their customers. Fading spark plugs or batteries meet their maker during the winter months, and parts battle the curse of corrosion. We may not have a cure for car cancer in this edition of Australian Car Mechanic, but we have a tonne of new and innovative items to make repairs much smoother.

While petrol engines still reign supreme, it’s hard to ignore the continuing rise of EVs, especially in urban areas. In this issue, we feature a few new products that help mechanics as they adjust to this brave new world of vehicles.

But it’s not all about the parts, and we have some delicious cars to feast your eyes on in this edition. Contributing writer Iain

On the cover

ACM Parts is one of Australia’s leading dealers in recycled parts. This industry is massive for mechanics as an alternative to sourcing more brand-new parts. ACM Parts deals in thousands of parts from vehicles that are no longer driveable, but have pieces that are in near-new condition ready for a new home. We look at ACM Parts’ array of offerings, both recycled and new, and their impact on the auto parts field.

Material deadlines

Curry takes us back to a romantic era of hot rods and police cars with his features on a beautiful red ’34 pickup and ’64 sky blue Studebaker.

Iain also details one of the more unique workshops in Australia: MaD Garage in Melbourne.

Its owners Dan and Molly are massive thrillseekers and revheads, with Molly a seasoned Dakar veteran.

Speaking of revving, the sound of the new Gen3 Supercar engines has well and truly resonated in the ears of fans by now. There’s nothing quite like the sound of muscle cars as they batter away at one another on the track.

We speak to a couple of the teams in this year’s Championship Series and get their thoughts on the new rides.

So grab a warm cuppa and break open this new edition already!

ACM Parts redefining repairs

The average Aussie driver knows very little about what happens to their car once it is no longer driveable. For thousands of mechanics, these vehicles contain a veritable buffet of components that are still very much useable. Enter ACM Parts, one of Australia’s leading recycled parts handlers and distributors.

A to B all the way to Z

More than 800,000 vehicles are deregistered every year in Australia. From the get-go, the team at ACM Parts has its finger on the pulse at bidding sites across the nation. ACM Parts Recycling Operations Manager Chris Mallon said “once a vehicle is purchased, the company’s extensive dismantling process begins. We purchase those vehicles and extract the value from re-used parts that can be recycled back to a repairer”.

According to Chris, there are about 1450 registered dismantlers across Australia. This includes ACM Parts, who meticulously takes vehicles apart and sorts the pieces.

Chris said that while larger components such as engines and transmissions are among the most valuable, a lot of useful pieces are in each vehicle.

range, which makes use of outer parts such as panels, taillights, headlamps, and bumpers. Scrap, including precious metals, catalytic converters, wiring and ferrous

ACM Parts has been a major contributor in the recycled-parts business for about 10 years. Its extensive process for re-using and dismantling parts is ever evolving in an industry full of innovation.
With thousands of parts and millions of SKUs, ACM Parts’ warehouses are chokked full.

from a vehicle and used. Chris said his team works through about 500 vehicles each week, dealing in more than 50 vehicle brands across hundreds of makes.

ACM Parts takes the greatest of care removing, polishing, and handling the parts it dismantles. Chris said for a large company like ACM Parts, these processes are driven by the numbers. “We have access to about a million stock-keeping units (SKUs) in our inventory management systems,” he said. “Every time a customer calls, we track that demand on that part.”

“Once parts arrive to the warehouse, they are organised and barcoded. When a customer calls with a request, the sales

team engages with the customer to place the order, and parts are transported out across the country.”

The reclaimed-parts offering from ACM Parts is part of an important industry across Australia. Recycled parts are usually of a very high standard and can often cost less than 50 per cent of the asking price of new components.

Popular pieces

ACM Parts has a massive library of parts and components to supply workshops across the nation. ACM Parts Mechanical Sales Manager Jarrod Burrows said there are some parts naturally more in demand

than others. When it came to popularity, high-demand vehicles with a high workload – such as Toyota HiLuxes and Ford Rangers – are what get consistently quoted in the recycled-parts industry. “Anything with a high volume on the road comes with high demand when things go wrong. We are then able to offer an alternative cost effective option, saving our customers money” Jarrod said.

What goes around…

While being a cost-effective choice for mechanics is a massive drawcard for recycled parts, they are also naturally much better for the environment as well. Rather

than forking out for a new component, mechanics have peace of mind knowing they are not only getting a quality part that is proven to work, but also lessening their impact on wastage.

“The more we can do to extract value out of a vehicle and resupply that, rather than have to manufacture and store a new product, it’s more sustainable,” Chris said. “It’s part of that circular economy we’re all looking for.”

One challenge all recycled parts dealers face in terms of sustainability is parts that are hard to re-use. ACM Parts has been a big contributor to discussions between stakeholders about what can be done to find a place for pieces which cannot be recycled.

“How do we find industry re-sale value for plastics, glass, and rubber? We’re starting to get traction on tyres as we’re putting them in roads and other things,” Chris said. “Those markets just haven’t developed yet, the challenge for us and other dismantling operators is finding someone to provide value in those spaces.”

Jack of all trades

ACM Parts’ main trade may be in recycling parts; however the company’s offerings are evolving as it sets the standard of auto

ACM Parts Original

The best of brand-new OEM-equivalent components. A cost-effective alternative to OEM or recycled parts, offering high quality and genuine pieces.

ACM Parts Aftermarket

Top-notch upgrades and accessories. Parts are sourced from certified manufacturers, with particular emphasis on lighting and cooling systems. BorgWarner has partnered with ACM Parts and offers some of the most advanced systems, including radiators, intercoolers, and condensers. Hella and Valeo are ACM Parts’ lighting part suppliers.

Both offer a huge range of headlight options for vehicles, specialising in European cars such as BMW, Renault, Audi, Volkswagen, and Mercedes.

ACM Parts Consumables

ACM Parts stocks a huge catalogue of consumables, including high-quality PPE, tapes, abrasives, polishes, wipes, and adhesives.

“It’s about having multiple options for the customer,” said Jarrod. “We started off in recycled parts, and we’ve progressed through parallel parts into the aftermarket. “Consumables is a big thing – we have customers procuring their consumables from multiple suppliers. How can we support that through ACM? When our

customers call for an engine, transmission or a suspension part, we can offer them the adhesives, degreasers, gloves and rags they need for the job.”

Setting the standard

Gone are the days where wrecking yards were self-serve and first come, first serve for buyers. ACM Parts is a piece of the evolution of recycled-parts retail for mechanics and end users. ACM Parts sets itself apart from other offerings by making the lives of its customers as straightforward as possible.

You can find more information about ACM Parts and its catalogue at acmautoparts. com.au, or by calling 1800 226 727.

Once parts are extracted and polished, they’re catalogued and sorted to one of ACM Parts’ immense warehouses.

Problem solved with OEX’s innovative product range.

For over 25 years, Australian auto electricians and mechanics have been supported with quality aftermarket products by OEX. Over this time, OEX have earned a reputation for its continuous improvement through quality, range, pricing, innovation and service for the ever-evolving car parc.

OEX’s strides in innovation are also a key contributor to its 25-year success. Its mission is to challenge the norm, enhance durability, improve performance, and release new, pioneering products to the market. Now celebrating the addition of over 50 new part numbers in its alternator and starter motor range, OEX continues to be Australia and New Zealand’s brand of choice for automotive specialists.

GPC Asia Pacific’s Rotating Electrical Merchandise Manager Andrew Little said when products are released to the market, OEX looks at major OE products to identify improvements so customers can plug and play. This has resulted in reduced warranties and less wasted time for OEX customers.

This is evident in OEX’s most recent work with solving a common problem on identifying the correct regulator function for 2003-12 Camry and RAV4’s with similar 2AZ-FE 4 cylinder 2.4L engines. OEX range DXA582 and DXA583 Alternators cover

these applications, but as both units have the same regulator with a single terminal function difference, it is difficult to diagnose whether and S or RLO regulator is required.

The OEX team have solved this problem with a simple tester (ACX6250). The ACX6250 simply plugs into the harness and after you turn on ignition (without starting the vehicle), the tester will show which regulator function you require. If S, use DXA582. If RLO, use DXA583.

It’s not just these two applications though, the ACX6250 unit will work on

Lexus, Hiace, Kluger and others with similar issues. When you have a similar S and RLO terminal function on the same application, this tester can diagnose quickly, remove frustration and wasted time.

OEX’s full range of trusted electrical products are available through NAPA Auto Parts and Repco nationally. Additionally, with nationwide warranty assistance if you do encounter an issue, help is not far away. Technical advice is also close at hand with experts that are trade qualified, ready to take your enquiry.

Safe working on electric and hybrid vehicles.

Unquestionably, there are new and inherent risks associated with the maintenance and repair of electric and hybrid vehicles in contrast to conventional vehicles.

This includes:

• Short circuits with potential to create explosions and fires

• E xposed connections and the presence of high voltage cable which has the potential for electric shock, resulting in serious death or injury

• Components that may retain a dangerous voltage even when a vehicle is switched off

• Harmful gases and liquids released when batteries are damaged

• Vehicles silently moving and people not aware

• Or components that may move unexpectedly due to magnetic forces.

Obtaining additional skills, appropriate training through registered training facilities and following the car manufacturer’s guidelines will be necessary to allow technicians to work safely with these vehicles. Having a proper procedure to disable, embolise, deenergise the vehicle, incorporating a lockout procedure so the vehicle can’t be re-energised until technicians have completed their tasks is essential to create safe work practices.

AS 5732:2022 ‘Electric Vehicle Operations- Maintenance and Repair’ lists necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) depending on the task and level of risk involved. Some of these last line of defence PPE measures include:

Electrical Insulating Gloves with an appropriate voltage rating. Commonly these are Class 0 that offer protection up to a working voltage of 1000V AC /15000V DC. These can be worn with a cotton under glove to reduce sweating and provide comfort. Leather over gloves are worn to protect the rubber insulated gloves from mechanical harm and also to provide protection against electrical arcing. The use of caution signage and warning steering wheel covers to alert others of potential risks and temporary exclusion zones to instruct non authorised people to keep away.

Using 1000V insulated rated tools when

working on energised components to lessen the risk of shorting out the high energy battery source. Wearing arc rated face shields and clothing to protect the face and body against the direct force of an electric arc incident. Having an (AED) automated external defibrillator immediately available in the event of an electrical shock.

Bentleigh Automotive Services was, for a while, their second workshop. They also owned the successful Bosch Car Service – Malvern Automotive Services before selling in 2019.

“I think Bosch is pretty good. Their staff have taught us a lot over the years,” Darren said. “We receive business guidance through their online Bosch Service Excellence program (including OHS, marketing and finance courses), access to parts and technical information, our technicians regularly brush up on their skills through Bosch Automotive Technical Training, and Bosch keeps us on track and moving forward with its quality audits and tests which are conducted each year.”

The journey

The ongoing partnership between Bosch and Bosch Car Service – Bentleigh Automotive Services has worked very well over time, with Cathy now representing

Cathy spoke about the journey in the automotive industry so far and remembered the times when the pair felt quite isolated when they weren’t associated with Bosch.

“There was no one to bounce ideas off when we were on our own,” Cathy said. “Once we became part of the Bosch Car Service network, we came across hundreds of like-minded people with the same interests as us.

“It’s always great to catch up at the networking events and we always return to the workshop with new and innovative ideas to implement into the business. Continuous improvements are necessary to keep afloat in this industry.”

Trust in the brand

With no two days ever being the same in any workshop, and more and more modern hybrid and EV vehicles now on the roads, the range of knowledge needed today is vast. The right partner is more important than ever before.

“Working in the automotive service and repair industry is like a big brain tease every day,” Darren said. “You never know what type of puzzles you will come across and need to solve to ensure the vehicle

is returned to the customer in perfect working order. This keeps me on my toes, and without the support of Bosch and its training, the boys (technicians) and I would not be able to perform at the highest level, which is what it takes these days to survive.

“I see more customers seeking second opinions and starting to move away from dealerships, and being part of the Bosch Car Service network has allowed us to be associated with the Bosch brand that is recognised and trusted by everyone. They choose us and trust us with their cars.”

Partnering with Bosch

With great opportunities for all independent workshops to consider, joining the Bosch Car Service network will help you rethink the way you do your business.

The Bosch Car Service concept is known worldwide for its training, partner, workshop and marketing support, as well as the global brand recognition of a world-leading and trusted company.

The best news is that with technology moving on, we are able to get in front of suppliers and understand what the best repair methodology and parts for our Australian fleet is. This brings me back to where diagnostics is king. By way of example, the IAME AATR (Australasian Automotive Transmission Rebuilders) Division has the national Automatic Transmission Seminar and Exhibition coming up in May and I have had the need to ring many workshops. The level of frustration through the lack of parts still reigns supreme.

I have learnt it on some vehicles a common fault needs a speed sensor, which sits in a lead plate, to be replaced. These parts have been unavailable worldwide for many months and the cars that require these parts are sitting dormant in workshops. When you think about it, most of these cars have in excess of 150,000km and the valve body the lead plate bolts to has definite signs of wear. The valve bodies are readily available with the lead plate and speed sensor already attached. Would we not suggest to a client that the valve body is constantly working, and it would benefit greatly to get the car back on the road with a brand-new valve body?

To the Turbo

At our upcoming seminar and exhibition, we also have Garrett Motion turbo as a guest speaker. Again, nearly every diesel

produced will be turbo assisted and there are numerous times the transmission has been blamed, stripped down, and a rebuild ordered, when it was finally learnt it was a turbo problem all along. Garrett is not attending to teach us how to bolt turbos on and off, but how to diagnose whether they are working effectively and/or causing the fault in the vehicle. We, as an industry, need to constantly learn. We need to follow through with the latest diagnostic tips and tricks and learn to communicate with the client so we don’t have cars sitting around for unnecessarily lengths of time and money not being banked.

There is great advantage in attending courses which are known now as NNRUC (Not Nationally Recognized Units of Competency). These courses have great value in keeping our knowledge current and alive.

Lasting legacy

As we approach June, I know a lot of our older members are wondering whether they will go through for another financial year. There is no doubt there is a lot of stress and knowledge needed to run a sustainable business, and in a lot of cases being a good practitioner does not make a successful businessperson.

The point I wish to make is you must have a succession plan is place.

This always comes up around the end

Now Easter is behind us we will start to move back into seminars and trade shows. I realise obtaining spares and stock is still hard, but it is better than it used to be…

of financial year when the older generation contemplate whether to stay in the industry or retire. Again, with our seminar, I have spoken to many transmission rebuilders who are at this point. It is when I enquire about their succession plan I find that nothing has really been done or considered. The thought to leave has certainly been hatched and grown, but very little consideration has been given to seeing if any folk within the workshop would care to take on the business.

There seemed to be very little encouragement given to a 2IC to take the step and buy the business. The IAME offers business-services coaching which covers succession plans. We help you prepare your business for the next chapter, be it yours or someone new. I, too, believe in constant training. For example, I just completed a training course on ESG (Environment Social/Cultural and Governance), three key factors that make a business sustainable today. If you would like to learn more about our Business Services Division or our business mentoring services, please contact IAME at inbox@

The next generation

Training in Australia is on the cusp of fairly significant change. Although this will take time for resources to develop and new training methodology to be developed, it will need to happen. If things progress the competencies we know today that make up a qualification will probably change to what will be known as a Skills Standard.

I believe with the technology change in the automotive vehicle it is time a change

this reform may not be the total answer, to continue to train in the old form is not conducive to the best outcomes for our apprentices and people wishing to upgrade their skills. It’s early days and as you know the IAME follows the VET sector strongly. I will keep you up to date with the changes as and when they come, but be aware there are changes afoot and with new terminology and new performance outcomes.

23
IAME AATR’s upcoming seminar will help members navigate some of the issues facing the industry. Older workshop owners passing on the baton isn’t new, but having a stable succession plan is as vital as ever.

His next 13 years were spent with Cat® equipment dealer Hastings Deering. He bounced around between Rockhampton, Townsville, Mackay, Brisbane, and others, including a two-year stint in New Guinea. Peter said this was pre-independence, and a fascinating, peaceful place to work. He’d repair heavy machinery and, as many fishing vessels used Cat engines, carry out marine work too.

“We’d be sent to some very, very remote villages using various aircraft,” he said. “In advance, we’d ask the customer as many questions as we could about what was wrong, and hopefully take the right parts with us. If you got there and they didn’t fit, it’s quite a task to get back and forth again. There were lots of challenges, but I’ve got many good stories from those days.”

Peter’s wife Roylene reminded him how much he was away in those years: the couple made 12 moves in six years at one point.

A lightning (hot)rod

Peter ultimately worked his way up to workshop manager, and with Roylene’s income as well, they were able to buy their first hot rod – a 1932 Ford Roadster.

“We were a bit green, didn’t know much about them or what was involved,” Peter said. “There’s a bit of a process to go through with the Australian Street Rod Federation (ASRF). You have to become a member, and they check the car and do approvals. Instead of using the transport

“It’s just a little baby V8, so it may only have 200hp,” Peter said. “It’s not a speed machine.”

Regardless, it sounds glorious.

It ran on LPG when he bought it, but with many service stations abandoning gas, Peter converted it back to petrol power, fitting a new fuel tank and carburettor. He removed “the big, ugly console” inside, had the seats reupholstered in red and black, fitted a new shifter, and helped create a quite stunning, comfy cabin to cruise in.

Just a few classics

Peter showed me photos of the classics he and Roylene have bought, fixed up and maintained since. Every one looks immaculate. There’s a 2013 Morgan which was: “a bit tatty so we gave that a good clean up,” followed by a 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback: “You don’t lose money on a car like that.”

Then, for something different, a 1966 Toyota FJ40 SWB, which was tidied mechanically and gifted new upholstery.

“It was very rough to ride in, noisy and hot,” Peter said. “The dog and grandkids liked it. We sold it to a Toyota dealer to go on display in their showroom alongside new cars, it was that good.”

Peter’s current toy is a bright red ’34 Pickup hot rod, utilising Ford’s late 1940s

The ute’s paint, chrome, rims, underside, badges, roof, and lights are all show-car quality. Lifting the tray cover reveals a covered spare wheel mounted to an impossibly shiny polished wood floor.

“We take it out a couple of times each week,” Peter said. “We drive it up to the hills and enjoy it, plus it’s reliable and easy to maintain.”

Peter said he still got joy from owning and running such a classic.

“The only trouble I have nowadays is my body creaks and moans when I’m bending a lot,” he said. “The next day I pay for it!”

It’s still worth it, and he suggested anyone with even a passing interest –and some mechanical skills – should visit a cars and coffee or show and shine event to see hot rods and classics.

“They’re a good investment,” he said. “And if you’ve got the passion, it’s such a rewarding thing to do.”

The 2023 Supercar Championship has upped the muscle with the GEN3 cars. The Mustangs and Camaros reignite the Ford-Chevrolet Touring Car Australia rivalry of old, and give Supercars teams a new challenge as they chase racing immortality.

The new Gen3 cars showcase one of Supercars’ biggest changes in recent history. The Mustang and Camaro both provide a much different design overall to the Gen2 cars, opting closer to their on-road compatriots.

We say farewell to five-litre V8 engines in exchange for a single-cam engine with two valves per cylinder, and downforce is also drastically reduced – by nearly 70 per cent in some cases.

For Tickford racing Rookie Declan Fraser, the switch to Gen3 comes as he shifts from a successful Super2 stint to the big time.

“Coming over from Super2 may not have been as big a jump for me compared to the other guys already in the main series,” he said. “I wouldn’t say it’s easier. These are a completely different beast to what anyone’s ever driven.

“There was so much talk around how they would handle and how loose they’d be, and it was all true. They’re absolute animals to drive, and that’s what’s so fun. You go out

there and race hard. You’ve really got to look after the tyres.”

Blanchard Racing Team owner and former Supercars driver Tim Blanchard said the challenge in making such a massive change in fact made it an enjoyable transition.

“We were lucky we were able to leverage the resources of the CoolDrive

business to assist in sourcing the parts and limiting the supply-chain issues everyone is facing,” he said.

“Combine that with a dedicated crew that really worked hard and gave up their Christmas break, and we were able to be the first team to hit the track with a Gen3 car at Winton.”

Downforce for the Gen3 cars was reduced by as much as 70 per cent compared to their Gen2 predecessors. Supercars drivers were able to test the aerodynamics of their new cars at the AGP.

On the road again

The first full race for the Gen3s at Newcastle was a baptism of fire for all teams as they got to grips with the cars.

It was an even steeper curve for Declan whose debut was the Newcastle 500.

“You only get to make your debut one time, and Newcastle was one of the most brutal initiations in my lifetime,” he said.

Tim said for his pit crew, like others, it was the first time working on an entirely different car.

“They have had to learn a completely new car which many haven’t done for a long time,” he said. “As a category we are now working through the process of understanding where improvements can be made to make the cars easier to work on, and also cheaper, as a number of things - such as the price of materials – has changed since the Gen3 project started.

Winding roads

The season has seen teams try out their new rides on a variety of tracks, including the Newcastle Street Circuit and Australian

This is Declan Fraser’s first season racing in the Supercars Championship series. The Newcastle 500 proved a proper test for all Supercars teams as the first Gen3 race.

Declan said with the Gen3 cars having such a massive change in aerodynamics, a track like AGP made things significantly more interesting for drivers.

“They have so much less aero(dynamics) and it’s such an aero-dependent track,”

Declan said this altered the tactics for when he’s out on the track.

“You can’t make these quick adjustments, what you’ve got at the start of the race is what you have for whole race,” he said.

“The team’s gotta focus on the the car is perfect from the get-go, especially

something to take into account.

“It will have an impact on strategy at the fuel races,” he said.

“Another difference is the wheel nut. It is a different design to previous years to hopefully allow us to change to electric wheel guns in the future. The new design has been a little problematic at the first two events, which has meant stops haven’t been as smooth as previously seen in Supercar racing.

“At the AGP we introduced a new wheelnut design which was a good improvement, so hopefully we will be on top of that issue soon. It will be interesting throughout the year to see if there are differences in strategy on tyres too, with less downforce and the car sliding more.

“We might see more tyre degradation at some tracks which might change the strategy to previous years.

“This is still a bit of an unknown.”

With the bulk of the season yet to come, the road ahead will be interesting for Supercars teams to weather.

But one thing’s for sure: it’s going to be a helluva ride for both teams and fans.

“I think everyone is aligned in saying the cars look much better, sound great and are fast,” Tim said. “So give it a few months to learn the cars and I think it will be a positive step forward for the category.”

Up for a Lark

Picture the scene: it’s the early 1960s and a larrikin, 17-year-old Mick Brown is driving his hotted-up FJ Holden. Looming large in the rearview mirror is an imposing Studebaker Lark. Worst of all, its roof-top blue light is rolling round and the siren’s blaring. Pull over, young fella.

Thing is, Mick can steer a bit. And today he’s not keen on explaining to a walloper why he was a few miles over the limit. “I got away from him because I knew the area,” he said. “I raced up to my father’s place but left the FJ outside the shed because his trucks and cars were in there. The copper went up and down the street for half an hour with a searchlight going, trying to find me. He eventually walked up the driveway and put his hand on my bonnet.

“The next three times I was parked up in town, he booked me. Taught me a lesson.”

You’d have thought the big American Studebaker would be permanently in Mick’s bad books after that, but not so. This former racing driver and mechanic is now the one in charge of the lights and siren, albeit for fun rather than patrolling highways.

Boys in blue

His police-issue 1962 Lark was Wangaratta-based from December ’62 until early 1964, and looks resplendent in powder blue Victorian Police colour. This restored and preserved Studebaker proudly

displays its past life with rooftop blue light, two more bolted to the front bumper, and a bonnet-mount air-raid-type siren.

Remember when Australian cop cars were this graceful, elegant and rich with chrome? These days you’re hauled in by a BMW diesel or Kia Stinger – speeders back in the 1960s were at least pulled over in style.

Studebakers were brought to Australia in the inter-war years, but never in great

Canada Cycle & Motor Co. assembled CKD (complete knock-down) Lark kits, dramatically reducing its price for Australians.

The Lark was well suited to Aussie conditions with its (for the time) powerful V8 engine, strong acceleration and in-vogue US styling. The quad headlights, very Mercedes-Benz-like radiator grille, wraparound rear glass, circular taillights and twin

A thumping bent-eight in the Lark sealed the deal for any buyer hungry for decent displacement.

The police recognised the Lark’s potential too, soon employing them for wireless patrol and traffic control. Much like today’s police specials, a few choice tweaks were optioned to make them fit for purpose.

Most significant was ditching the normal 4.2-litre (259cu in) V8 for the 4.7-litre (289cu in) V8 about to go in the Studebaker GT Hawk. Just like that, the Victorian Police had a sedan able to reel in tyrants at up to 180kph. They were in control too, with the auto transmission eschewed in favour of a three-speed manual.

Mick showed me a copy of his car’s original production order. Other ‘special features’ included heavy-duty ‘finned’ drum brakes, heavy-duty clutch, rear axle and frame. The steering wheel listed as ‘Deluxe’ in taupe and white (it’s larger than a normal Lark’s, too), while the instrument cluster and speedo are ‘Regal’ style, with aficionados recognising police Larks have a black-face speedo with thinner red needle.

“I’d been looking for one for a while,” Mick said of his police Studebaker. “This one came up at a Melbourne auction and had been restored by a former Victorian police guy to a high standard.” The resto, by former Detective Inspector Ian Meates, was a sixyear job completed in 1998.

Some 25 years later his work still holds up well.

Ian bought the Lark for $1000, took it apart, performed extensive rust repairs, had it bare-metal resprayed, and rebuilt the engine. He then sourced and re-fitted all the police bits to reflect this Studebaker’s original start in life. Mick recognised it as a good ‘un, and snapped it up a few years ago to join his hotted-up 1967 Holden HR Premier and original 1955 Holden FJ sedan. The old Studebaker’s in good hands. dealer, before eventually running his own workshops in northern and western Sydney. The 77-year-old prepared and raced his own cars too, winning the 1972 NSW rallycross championship (second division) and competing as a privateer –driving solo – at the 1971 Hardie-Ferodo 500 at Mount Panorama.

Like a young chap called Peter Brock also racing that day (solo as well, but for the Holden Dealer Team), Mick was in a Holden Torana GTR XU-1. After seven hours of flat-out racing, Mick placed 22nd and only

nine laps down on Allan Moffat’s winning XY Falcon GT-HO Phase III.

Yep, there was some pretty valuable metal in that race.

“I was electronically timed at 137mph (220kph) down Conrod Straight,” Mick recalled. “In those days, there was a hump at the bottom of Conrod, and the front wheels used to come off the ground. It was bloody scary.”

That, combined with seven hours with no support driver taking over, underlines the balls-out heroism of previous generation racers. “I was absolutely buggered by the end of it,” Mick said.

Breaking out

His age and some health problems have curtailed how much mechanical work he can do these days, but Mick said the Lark is a simple thing to maintain. “I’ve got a hoist at home and still do a fair bit myself, but the old body won’t do everything anymore,” he said. “The thing I enjoy about it now is getting the work finished.”

Mick’s proved a fine custodian, making sure he gets the Lark to car events for the public to enjoy. Kids and adults of all ages are drawn to the imposing American sedan; its dash-mounted ‘Police’ plaque and blue lights proving irresistible. Unlike

today’s cop cars coated in shouty, bright stickers, the Lark is far more ‘protect and serve’ approachable.

Its giant rear bench seat is a lovely stretch-out offering: if you ended up back here, at least the naughty step was comfortable. Mick reached inside and activated the Studebaker’s party pieces. A panel in the brown dashboard is fitted with ‘Dome’ (blue lights) and ‘Siren’ switches to have the car in full pursuit mode, making a few baby boomers jump as they recall memories from tearaway teenage years spent at high speed.

Beneath the dash is a period AWA valve-type VHF two-way radio with beautiful ‘Carphone Junior’ red lettering. The authenticity there is a credit to its restorer and subsequent owners. In the front window there’s even a genuine State of Victoria sticker, stating December 1963 was the last month it was registered by the boys in blue. From the start of 1964, this Lark was retired for civilian duties, as it still performs today.

“It’s a great cruiser, but not one you’d drive around town all day,” Mick explained. “It’s got no power steering, which is even heavier these days due to the radial tyres. Back in the day you’d have the old crossplies.”

It doesn’t dissuade Mick from driving it whenever he can, no doubt with a cheeky smile on his face remembering how he managed to outrun one over 60 years ago.

Pieces of a puzzle

Fixing an engine is the bread and butter of any mechanics dayto-day. A customer rolls in, car sputtering away, and there’s no telling what lies beneath the hood. Could it be a dreaded blown gasket? Or perhaps a petty oil leak? Maybe it’s a whole collection of issues that leave you, the mechanic, scratching your head about how you’ll ever fix it all by knock-off.

There is, however, great satisfaction to be derived from pulling apart all the innards, finding the root of a problem and putting it all back together again. All the while, the customer comes and goes as if you haven’t been tinkering away for hours like a mechanical surgeon.

It’s no shock that an organism essential to the health of a car should experience plenty of changes as the years go by.

Projecta has grown its market-leading INTELLI-START (IS) range with the introduction of two new jump starters: the IS1400 and IS2000, both with patented Rapid Recharge Technology (RRT).

RRT adds efficiency and convenience for users and owners. Once the vehicle has started, the INTELL-START Jump Starter can fully replenish the energy that discharged during the starting process in

applications such as roadside assistance or for vehicle holding depots and car yards. When recharging is finally needed, this can be done back at the workshop, garage or home using the supplied 5V USB charger. A further benefit of the latest models is their ability to jump start vehicles and machines that use a variety of battery types including Lithium, Wet, AGM, Gel and Calcium.

choice to carry in the glovebox, for stowage with 4x4 recovery gear, or to keep on hand at workshops or car yards.

The larger – but still compact – IS2000 model provides even further versatility, with its auto sensing clamp connections making it convenient for use on both 12V and 24V electrical systems. The IS2000 will jump start 12V petrol vehicles with engines up to 8.0L and up to 6.0L for diesels. It can also jump start 24V vehicles – both petrol and diesel – with engines up to 7.0L. This level of performance makes it suitable for passenger vehicles, small trucks, agricultural equipment and midsized earthmoving machines. Additionally, the IS2000’s integrated, ergonomic handle allows for easy portability, making it an ideal alternative to cumbersome lead-acid jump starters that are normally moved around on a trolley.

Common to both units are premium spark-free clamps, ‘no solder’, high current connections for added longevity and performance, intuitive LCD display with real time updates, in-built LED work light, EVA storage case, USB charging port and the ability to be used as a powerbank. The IS2000 also features a ‘set and forget’ docking station for hassle-free benchtop charging.

The INTELL-START range is equipped with premium LiFePO4 batteries - the safest lithium technology available. Projecta’s jump starters also provide more starts with up to 2000 battery cycles - around four times more than competitor Lithium Cobalt based jump starters. This range delivers a substantially longer operating life and provides a smooth and reliable start, time after time. Fuelling the future

Penrite Oil is an Australian-owned and operated company that has been blending and producing highquality lubricants and other products for nearly 100 years.

Penrite is proud to be one of the few remaining companies around the world with a complete range of products specifically designed to meet the original requirements of veteran, vintage, and classic vehicles. This is including cars, trucks, motorcycles, and tractors. In 1926, when Les Mercoles started blending engine oils on his mother’s stove top in St Kilda and delivering product to local customers using his father’s wheelbarrow, veteran, vintage, and classic vehicles were considered cutting edge. Since then, Penrite has been utilising the latest technology, plus nearly 100 years of research and development, to protect the

investments, passions, and everyday drives of their loyal and dedicated customers.

Unparalleled standard Modern lubricants may contain additives that can have adverse effects in many older vehicles. Yellow metals such as brass and copper used in mechanical manufacturing, as well as early types of lubrication systems, need specialised lubricants. One of the key features of Penrite’s Classic engine oils is the use of low-detergenthigh-zinc formulations. This is critical in providing anti-wear protection in classic and vintage vehicles.

Penrite’s Classic engine oils are available in a range of viscosities to suit different engines and driving conditions. The Penrite Classic range of oils are ideal for petrol and diesel vehicles manufactured between

1950 and 1989, while the Shelsley range of engine oils are blended specifically for petrol, kerosene and diesel fuelled vintage, pre-war and post-war vehicles manufactured to 1950.

In addition to engine oils, Penrite’s Classic range also includes transoils for gearboxes and differentials; gear box oils, which are used in gearboxes fitted with straight, synchro and epicyclic gears, and in vehicles fitted with pre-selector gearboxes; suspension oils for telescopic and lever arm type shock absorbers, dashpot and damper oils for pre & post-war SU Carburettors, a semi fluid and steering box grease and a classic car coolant to protect cooling systems from rust & corrosion. These products are designed to provide excellent protection and smooth operation for classic and vintage vehicles.

Fuelled by devotion

“At Penrite, we understand the passion that classic car owners have for their vehicles”, Penrite Oil Brand Manager Jarrod Harding said. Penrite Oil is a company with a rich family history of classic car racing and ownership. The Dymond family-owned Lane 88 museum houses a collection of pre1970’s vehicles, including a 1903 Oldsmobile Model R Curved Dash Runabout,

1920 Ford Model T,

a 1927 Bugatti Type 35C,

a 1936 Riley Kestrel, 1936 Mercedes Benz 540K,

a 1938 BMW Type 328,

a 1959 Aston Martin DB4 and a 1922 Vauxhall 14/40 Model M restoration project car to name a few.

Mad world

Car workshops aren’t supposed to have beautiful downlighting and immaculate paintwork. They rarely feature giant wall-mounted speakers or a professional racing simulator either. Then you spot a gin and tonic shelf on a Tool Pro cabinet, a 1970s orange and mustard three-piece suite, and even a climbing wall. What’s going on here?

This is MaD Garage in the Melbourne suburb of Seaford – a workshop unlike any other.

For starters, it’s clinically clean. But look around and there’s the usual garage paraphernalia: a 4.5-tonne hoist with extra high lift (for utes and vans), a press, drill, bench grinder, vice, parts washer, and fabricating tools. Neatly organised tool cabinets are stacked by the walls, and I spot a TIG welder under the stairs.

“The premise was a fully functioning workshop that doesn’t look anything like one,” said Dan Gardner, the ‘D’ part of MaD Garage. The ‘M’ is Dan’s partner, Molly Taylor – recently described as Australia’s most successful female racing driver.

Not only was Molly the 2016 Australian Rally Champion, she and co-driver Johan Kristoffersson were inaugural Extreme E

The MaD workshop is fully functioning with hoist, tools and equipment, but aimed at use for motoring-related content creating rather than daily oil changes.

As well as a few of Molly and Dan’s collectables, the garage is ideal for showcasing many of Molly’s corporate sponsors.

Champions – ahead of Cristina Gutierrez and Sebastien Loeb, no less.

Small but smart

Dan is a well-respected motoring journalist and presenter, so he and Molly present a unique combination of talents. The workshop, Dan said, is the third member of the trio.

MaD Garage was established as a functioning workshop for showcasing vehicles, products, and mechanical work. Used primarily for photography or video content creation, the space also serves as a very cool and relevant space for

“Customers can use it for anything that needs a clean looking workshop space,” Dan said. “That can be for taking images or doing video explainers while a car’s being worked on.

“They can do any work they like, as long as it’s done in a day. Others can come over and tinker with their cars, but no hospital jobs allowed – we just haven’t got the room.”

He’s not wrong. The workshop is a mere 77m2, fitting a maximum of four cars. The mezzanine above features a bathroom, lounge area, TV for showing motor sport, Molly’s racing sim, and her collection of

floor, which looks surreal without the typical jumble of parts, tools, trolleys, rags, oil cans, and that non-running classic in the corner that was supposed to be finished last year. All familiar stuff to Dan.

To the extreme

A trained mechanic, Dan’s worked at a variety of workshops and specialists, including three years at Doncaster BMW when first arriving in Australia.

The German brand’s service departments are usually pretty schmick, but MaD Garage was to take things to the next level on that front.

“It had to be clean, organised and with no clutter,” Dan said. “It must function like a workshop, but look nothing like a proper one.”

By that he meant the necessary partchaos seen in garages where dozens of customers expect service and repairs to be done yesterday.

Molly’s pre-build plans? She said she wanted the space to be Formula 1 meets Google headquarters – such lofty ideals clearly part of a champion racer’s brain.

At first, Dan and Molly simply wanted the space to store and maintain their private collection of cars – motoring journalists and race drivers have a habit of buying ‘interesting’ vehicles they don’t really need.

At last year’s Australian Grand Prix, a chance conversation with Supercheap Auto high-ups saw the auto store giant express interest in getting involved.

“They see the value in relatable, approachable workshops, with driveway mechanics getting car stuff done themselves,” Dan said.

The workshop is also ideal for Molly’s personal sponsors – of which there are many – to help showcase their products with the star ambassador. Molly’s appearance on Seven Network’s SAS Australia raised her profile beyond even her incredible motorsport success.

Her revered skills explain why MaD has its own Can-Am Maverick X3 side-by-side dune buggy racer in situ for some visual excitement. Molly drove a Can-Am in this year’s Dakar Rally – arguably the world’s toughest motor sport event – so it all ties in nicely.

“A couple of people have talked about doing walkarounds of their cars here,” Dan said. “It’s ideal if they want to talk about anything underneath or in the wheel wells

while it’s up on the hoist – but not in a grubby, oily environment.”

Hang ten

A great deal of time and passion has gone into this unique project, as witnessed on MaD’s “making of” and tour videos on their YouTube page. They’re worth a watch to show a fantasy workshop we know couldn’t exist when daily customers, head rebuilds, and gearbox drops are involved.

Plumbing and electrics aside, Dan and Molly (and some mates when required) have turned a drab concrete space into a beautiful and, as the kids would say, totally Insta-worthy space. With Dan’s video

presenting talents, Molly’s otherworldly driving success and MaD Garage’s total rethink on what a workshop can look like and do, it’s quite a unique combination. Above all, this place exists for the love of cars: something we can all relate to. Reclining on the workshop’s hideous/ glorious 1972 orange Tessa sofa, a drink on Dan’s homemade Formula 5000 slick racing tyre coffee table, and the front bumper from Molly’s 2016 championship winning Subaru hanging above, there’s plenty to love about going MaD.

INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS

Truly tested

Stringent

The high-quality ROADSAFE shock absorber range for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles and four-wheel drives, enters the Australian automotive aftermarket after stringent local testing, research and development.

ROADSAFE STR covers replacement Shock Absorbers for passenger vehicles and daily drives, while ROADSAFE 4WD is a performance suspension enhancement for 4WD vehicles suited up to a 50mm lift.

While many suspension component manufacturers and marketers talk about local testing, few conduct product quality and validation tests to the level that ROADSAFE’s Victorian-based testing team carries out with every product offered.

All ROADSAFE product testing is conducted in a dedicated research and design facility located in the Melbourne suburb of Dandenong, along with the use of local sealed and unsealed roads. This purpose-built facility supports the ongoing development and testing of ROADSAFE suspension and chassis products.

All ROADSAFE product testing includes Visual Quality Inspections that focus on Welding quality, alignment, paint finish, thread quality and rubber quality. Further dyno testing incorporates durability testing, gas pressure and drag testing, valving forces and speed tests.

The rigorous ROADSAFE testing regime also includes vehicle fitment testing to ensure correct mounting, maximum drop allowance, maximum lift allowance, droop, fouling issues and vehicle body clearance.

ROADSAFE also ensures that its entire shock absorber product range is also on-road tested. Factors such as driver feel using actual road data, steering response/cornering, acceleration, braking and corrugation road testing are included. These are integral parts of this detailed evaluation process.

In addition to all the research and development testing to ensure total quality control, ROADSAFE also conducts batch testing, running its exhaustive tests on a percentage of units from

every part number order received. This includes comparing the physical product to the engineering drawing, visual inspections of all welding and bracketry, visual inspections of chrome finishes and paint, dynamometer testing including gas pressures, along with durability and valve force measurements. Additional vehicle testing is also carried out when required.

The ROADSAFE technical facility is integral for more than product testing, design, and research. It also enables

ROADSAFE to constantly design and develop new automotive chassis and suspension component parts specifically to suit the Australian automotive aftermarket.

The new ROADSAFE shock absorber range is available from Burson Auto Parts and other quality independent auto parts resellers nationwide. To find out more call 03 8687 1700 or visit www.roadsafe.com.au.

Ultimate brakeage

Power’s up, but what about the brakes?

When thinking car mods, a power gain is probably the first thing that comes to mind for most automotive enthusiasts. Whether it’s something as simple as a new air filter or exhaust system, through to an ECU remap, forced induction or engine rebuild - the only limiting factor is budget and imagination. While Aussies are notorious petrolheads, often keen to tinker with a few modifications themselves, or to leave this work to a specialist performance workshop, there’s one mod that’s often not considered: braking upgrades. Sure, brakes may not be important for getting good quarter mile times, but for just about every other motorsport – from grassroots to elite – having a good braking package contributes greatly to overall performance. Away from the track, quality braking is just as important, if not more so, because unlike on track, conditions are not controlled. You not only have to consider your own driving, but potentially pre-empt the poor driving of others.

Better stopping on and off the track

As Australia’s largest manufacturer of friction material products and a global leader in the automotive aftermarket sector, Bendix understands the high demands driving enthusiasts place on their vehicles and in particular, their

60 plus years of industry experience to develop its ‘Ultimate+ Performance Brake Upgrade Kits’. The kits have recently been expanded to include more of Australia’s most popular performance cars, muscle cars and hot hatches. These include many Ford Mustang variants, selected Holden and HSV VE and VF Commodores, a wide selection of Subaru’s WRX rally hero models, and the peppy Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ twins.

Complete braking solutions

Available as either a front or rear kit, each Ultimate+ Performance Brake Upgrade Kit contains everything that’s needed to significantly increase a car’s braking performance in the convenience and cost effectiveness of a single package. The front kit features Ultimate Sports and Performance front rotors, Ultimate+ high friction brake pads, braided brake lines, DOT 4 brake fluid, Ceramasil parts lubricant and a cleaning product. The rear kit contains Ultimate Sports and Performance rear rotors and Ultimate+ high friction brake pads. All components offer the very latest in braking technology, developed following extensive R&D input and advanced processes.

Ultimate rotors

A key component of the kits is Bendix’s premium Ultimate rotors which feature

stopping power and reduced wear, while also delivering improved thermal stability that reduces brake fade and warping under extreme braking temperatures. Ultimate rotors are also equipped with diamond tip slots – these are specifically designed with unidirectional configurations, along with V-shaped dimples, which assist in dispersing hot gases, dirt and water, leading to more consistent braking. As well as offering these heightened levels of performance, owners enjoy peace of mind knowing that Ultimate rotors have been manufactured based on original equipment specifications for size, diameter and stud pattern spacing. This makes them the perfect fit for both performance and longterm reliability.

Ultimate+ Brake Pads

Also included in the kits are Bendix’s high friction Ultimate+ brake pads which utilise an advanced ceramic formulation, that provides a responsive pedal feel and braking confidence no matter what the driving conditions.

Another feature of these pads is Bendix’s ‘Blue Titanium Stripe’ – this innovation is designed to rapidly mate with the rotor when brakes are first applied, eliminating the need to ‘bed-in’ the pads, potentially saving up to 10 minutes of workshop time.

Other benefits of Ultimate+ pads include improved stopping power of up to 25 per cent compared to standard pads and greater brake fade resistance. They’re also more durable and less likely to wear the brake rotors. Additionally, their ceramic formula produces significantly less noise and dust, meaning wheels stay cleaner

INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS

Don’t forget the ancillary bits

Further complementing the front Ultimate+ package are Bendix’s braided brake hoses, which feature a Teflon-coated core line, that is wrapped in a stainless-steel braid and then coated in a protective outer sleeve.

Braided brake lines provide a more consistent brake feel – the steel sheath prevents the line from expanding under sustained braking pressure, while also offering added protection from road debris.

The front Ultimate+ Performance Brake Upgrade Kit also includes Bendix’s DOT 4 brake fluid. This fluid helps the braking system operate over a wider range of extreme driving conditions such as those experienced on track. Another benefit of the fluid is that it helps minimise corrosion of the braking system while remaining inert to both the natural and synthetic rubber used in brake hoses, cups and seals.

Rounding out the front Ultimate+ package is Ceramasil Brake Parts Lubricant and a can of Bendix ‘Clean-up’ brake and parts cleaner.

For more information on Bendix’s Ultimate+ Performance Brake Upgrade Kits, visit www. bendix.com.au/product-range/ultimateperformance-brake-upgrade-kit or consult your local Bendix stockist or workshop.

Coping without copper

Why seek out Copper-free brake pads? Well, the environment, of course!

Copper was once an important ingredient in brake pads, assisting in conducting braking thermal temperature achieving a smooth braking experience, and preventing brakes from excessive NVH (noise vibration harshness) when used. But what many people do not know is that copper leached from brake pads can have a lethal impact on urban water quality and aquatic life.

How do copper brake pads affect the environment?

When we brake, fine particles of copper powder and other metals within the pads are deposited on our roadways. This brake dust then flows into our water system

do not break down, all metals that flow into stormwater will end up in the environment

Hardcore coating

Ute beds as good as new with Herculiner.

Utes have traditionally been the vehicle of choice for tradies. Now they have reached a level of popularity that was never imagined when the first Aussie ute was built by Ford in Australia in 1934.

Keeping them looking good is a difficult matter when - during the week - the trays are full of tools and machinery hauled to work sites where the tools are pulled in and out over the tray floor. The ute is often loaded with leisure equipment on weekends too like trail bikes, camping gear and even rubbish for a quick run to the tip. This all means the ute floor gets quite a beating and it shows, but not if the floor is treated with Herculiner.

Last year, Herculiner proved to be the number one truck bed coating brand in North America ahead of five other brands,

and for good reason. It prevents rust, it is also resistant to petrol, oils, solvents and other chemicals. It has a high scratch resistance, adhesion, impact resistance, chemical and skid resistance. When cured, Herculiner provides a non-slip coating with a textured, tough, durable layer that won’t chip, flake or peel.

Its proprietary solvent-based formula allows Herculiner to adhere better to surfaces than water-based products, and it can bond to virtually any surface or material including wood, metal, concrete, aluminium, asphalt, rubber, fibreglass and plastics including PVC.

If damaged, other coatings need to be removed or gouged. But as Herculiner adheres to itself, it can easily be repaired with additional applications.

Various methods can be used to apply Herculiner – brush, roller or spray compressor.

Application is an easy process starting with preparing the surface by cleaning it of all dirt and grime and masking off areas to be painted.

All paint areas must be scuffed to remove gloss and the surfaces wiped down with Xylene (Xylol), Acetone or MEK solution using a rag.

Herculiner must be thoroughly mixed before use, and mixed during application so that the rubber particles remain suspended to ensure an even application. A light first topcoat acts as a primer. After about four hours, Herculiner is dry to the touch and when it no longer feels tacky you apply a second coat. This is left to cure for at least 24 hours before light use or 3-5 days before heavy use.

You can find out more about Herculiner by visiting hpplunds.com.au.

ClutchPro Plus: The clutch solution for the trade.

The ClutchPro Plus program by Australian Clutch Services (ACS) has been developed primarily in support of workshops looking for enhanced efficiency and value with their clutch solution. The ClutchPro Plus program covers the majority of popular makes and models in the Australian and New Zealand market and incorporates a spigot bearing/ bush and alignment tool where required with each kit.

ClutchPro is the trade-focused, standard replacement brand for ACS and is developed in-house to support their extensive national distribution network.

“Our ClutchPro Plus program has been in place for several years now but we are always adding new kits to this range based on popularity within the market,” Australian Clutch Services General Manager Simon Acton explained.

“This program offers exceptional value to workshops who are looking for the complete clutch solution. By incorporating the spigot bearing or bush and an alignment tool in the kit, we are saving time for the workshop and improving the

efficiency of the replacement process.” ACS’ ClutchPro brand offers everything from complete clutch kits to specialised clutch actuation components, hydraulics and even tools. “The ClutchPro brand really is the complete clutch solution,” Simon said. “We have built this brand over two decades to cater to the needs of the Australian automotive aftermarket. “Although our range is focussed around complete clutch kits, we also offer a variety of individual clutch system accessories such as clutch forks, pivot balls, cables and hydraulics to ensure that workshops have access to these vital components if required.

“We also aim to stock as many popular products as possible in our warehouses around Australia to ensure the fastest delivery time possible in the instance the component is holding up a car on a hoist.”

The ClutchPro Plus program has been part of the Australian Clutch Services offering since 2017 and has grown over time. The range now covers most popular vehicles and has expanded into kits to suit heavy commercial vehicles.

The range of kits available through ClutchPro also allows for different options such as replacement flywheel, concentric slave cylinder and flywheel bolts when required.

“Our process is to analyse each individual vehicle and then develop a range of complete kits to suit with varying component inclusions,” Simon said.

“This way we are able to offer different levels of kits for each vehicle application where the workshop or vehicle owner might want additional critical components such as concentric slave cylinder.”

The base level ClutchPro kits will include a pressure plate, friction disc and release bearing where required with high level kits also incorporating dual mass or single mass flywheel, concentric slave cylinder, replacement bolts, spigot bearing/bush, alignment tool and even spline grease and thread lock.

this design and applied its own cast-iron composition for further enhancement. Setting its usual benchmark of at least matching, if not outperforming, the original product, the all-new STREET SERIES Hybrid Composite rotor now offers an attractive replacement alternative to owners of those high-end vehicles. The new range meets R90 requirements, giving customers additional peace of mind they are purchasing a quality product.

Why composite rotors?

Using an aluminium or steel hat instead of an integral cast iron rotor may reduce the overall weight of a rotor to be by up to 15%, depending on diameter and hat depth.

While this reduction may appear minor, it strongly affects the vehicle’s fuel consumption, performance and road handling, since the rotor is part of the unsprung weight. This is important to understand, since the ratio between sprung and unsprung weight directly influences the behaviour of a vehicle and its ride comfort.

The ‘unsprung’ weight of a vehicle is the portion that is not supported by springs. This would include everything the car body is connected to, like the suspension arms, springs, shock absorbers, wheel hubs and tires, brakes and part of the axle halfshafts. While engineering the suspension system, one of the objectives would be to have an unsprung weight that is as low as possible.

Effect on Ride Quality

Dthe nation’s leading brake rotor manufacturer and brake system supplier, has once again stepped up to the challenge and come up with an all-new range of Hybrid Composite (HC) two-piece rotors.

Traditional rotors, such as DBA’s STREET SERIES or 4000 SERIES, are made up of a single cast iron piece. Composite rotors, on the other hand, are composed of two separate elements: a cast iron braking surface (disc ring) and an aluminium or steel hat.

DBA has been a pioneer and leader in

5000 SERIES continues to set the standard for two-piece performance rotors, using lightweight 6061 T6 aircraft aluminium hats and NAS bolts to join them to the disc ring.

The last 10 or so years, however, have seen some European luxury brands equip their vehicles with a different type of composite rotor, utilising steel hats often fixed to the rotor ring by a number of horizontal rivets placed around the outside of the hat, or alternatively by co-casting the rotor ring onto the hat.

DBA, applying its decades-long rotor development experience, has adopted

A lighter unsprung mass (ie those parts of a vehicle that are largely unaffected by the vehicle movement) is more responsive to road imperfections/undulations. A lighter unsprung mass has a higher natural vibration frequency and therefore less probability to resonate with road imperfections. Essentially, there is improved absorption of energy from the road vibrations, thus providing a better isolation to the sprung mass (those parts subject to pitching and rolling depending on road condition, ie the vehicle body).

Effect on Handling and Performance

For the very same reasons lower unsprung mass improves ride comfort, it also improves vehicle handling. The suspension system’s ability to respond to surface vibrations and cornering loads is improved by the lower unsprung mass.

62 AUSTRALIAN CAR MECHANIC | www.mechanics-mag.com.au
INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS
DBA’s latest Hybrid Composite rotor range ups the ante in terms of lightweight, durable upgrades.

Effect on Fuel Consumption

Lower unsprung weight is advantageous when it comes to acceleration and braking. Since wheels, tyres and brakes are not only accelerated in a linear but also in a rotational motion, their mass has a disproportionately large effect on the amount of energy required from the engine. Even small weight savings in the unsprung mass improve the vehicle’s fuel efficiency and emission level.

Materials & Manufacturing

DBA’s

cater for high-end European vehicles.

In summary

In the new DBA steel-hatted Hybrid Composite rotors, the pressed steel and processed aluminium hats provide efficiencies in manufacturing, offering cost savings that ultimately benefit the vehicle owner. Additional durability is another direct benefit, as the steel provides for higher tensile strength over standard cast rotor systems.

DBA once again demonstrates it has listened to the market by introducing a high-quality OE-replacement product that outperforms comparable OE mono-cast replacement rotors. Sold under the STREET SERIES label, it offers drivers of highpowered luxury vehicles a value-for-money option to restore braking performance at the fraction of the cost of the ‘original’ part.

For drivers seeking even more advanced braking comfort and performance, DBA likewise continues to expand its range of 5000 SERIES two-piece high-performance rotors. To learn more visit dba.com.au or call 1800 730 039.

New complete solution for the automotive aftermarket: INA Timing Chain KIT with crankshaft sprocket for 1.2l TSI engines of the VW Group.

The experts of the Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket division agree: the future belongs to chain drives. They expect that the number of chain-driven engines in new vehicles will increase significantly by 2030. With more than 100 years of experience in chain drives, the company is not only one of the largest original equipment manufacturers but also supplies the independent aftermarket with a comprehensive range of repair solutions for chain-driven timing drives. Under the INA brand, the aftermarket specialists are now offering a timing chain KIT for vehicles of the VW Group (VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda) with 1.2l TSI engines.

The chain drive is a complex system. For smooth engine operation, it is essential that all parts and components in the timing drive are perfectly matched and interlock synchronously. Therefore, in case of repair, the complete system should always be replaced. This way, consequential damage

can be avoided even after replacement and the optimum interaction of the individual components in the timing drive can be guaranteed.

“With the INA Timing Chain KIT, we are the first supplier on the market to offer a repair solution that also includes the crankshaft sprocket,” Schaeffler Automotive Aftermarket Head of Engine Systems Christian Kos explained.

“For this purpose, we have developed a special tool that helps to replace the crankshaft sprocket easily and professionally.

“With more than 25 components, the INA Timing Chain KIT contains exactly those parts that are required for a comprehensive and sustainable repair of timing drives.

“This underlines our high level of competence in chain drives and demonstrates our orientation towards garages.”

All components of the INA Timing Chain

KIT for 1.2l TSI engines are precisely matched together. In addition to timing chain, camshaft sprocket, chain tensioner, slide and guide rail, these include all the necessary components for installation. The scope of supply also includes the crankshaft sprocket and the chain additive ‘Chain Protect’ developed together with Liqui Moly for optimum lubrication. This additive reduces running-in wear after chain drive replacement by up to 20 per cent, thus extending the service life of the chain drive.

Further information on INA Timing Chain KIT, the corresponding special tools and the complete range of products from Schaeffler’s Automotive Aftermarket division can also be found on the REPXPERT online portal (www.repxpert.com.au).
