elcome to the 69th season of polo at Guards Polo Club. With our Grounds Development Plan almost complete we look forward to offering great sport on some of the finest polo fields in the world for all of our members. This epic work project has already reaped rewards – we played more than 600 games last year – highlighting the great depth of polo that we can offer at all levels of the game.
The Cartier Queen’s Cup was my stand out memory from last year. Seventeen teams contesting incredibly fast paced games in this world-class, 22-goal competition and there was not a game that did not live up to expectations. The final was particularly memorable, despite the rain, with both teams, Murus Sanctus and La Magdeleine, vying to add their name to this prestigious trophy for the first time. This year Cartier will celebrate 40 years of sponsorship of polo here at the Club. This is a remarkable achievement –and I would like to thank Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK, for the brand’s generous and unwavering support.
David Matsumoto and the team from Out-Sourcing Inc. have also continued to support the Club generously through its sponsorship of the Club’s oldest tournament, the Royal Windsor Cup. In addition the company has taken the title sponsorship of HRH The Prince of Wales’s Royal Charity Polo Day for the past three years. Such consistent investment enables us to continue to attract top-quality players and their impressive equine strings.
Our roster of Home Elected Players (HEP) continues to grow and they are, without doubt, the bedrock of this Club. The pages of team shirts in this publication increases every year and I would like to thank every one of these HEPs for their support of the Club. Within these Yearbook pages we recall a HEP who was passionate about polo

in general and Guards Polo Club in particular – Brian Stein. My fellow Board Director Major Jamie Hayward pays tribute to our former Chairman who was a Playing Member at Guards Polo Club for some 50 years.
La Martina is another brand that has aligned itself with this Club for more than a decade. Long-term sponsor of the historic Varsity Day and the 15-goal Centenary Cup, and the official supplier of all of the Club’s kit and clothing, La Martina generously expanded its partnership in 2023 by supporting our tournament at La Aguada in Argentina.
In addition, La Martina’s Becky Simpson and James Neighbour, the Club’s Chief Operating Officer, have just returned from a successful trip to India, promoting both La Martina and the Club to new polo audiences. Such innovative partnerships will reap rewards for both parties.
I am delighted to confirm that Access Bank has renewed its excellent
partnership with us until 2026. This vibrant day always delivers for those playing and spectating as well as raising substantial funds for UNICEF. We look forward to welcoming John Collins and his fabulous Talacrest Ferraris back to the Club this August too.
With Harry Wilson and the Searcys team returning to our Clubhouse, Laurent-Perrier in abundance behind the bar, chilled Clinova goodies in the team tents and the date set for the Members Welcome to the Season, we are ready to welcome every Player and Member through our doors. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible as the year progresses and I wish you all a successful season, on and off the field of play. u

HRH The Prince of Wales took to the polo field at Guards Polo Club last summer to play in the Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Charity Polo Cup. brian stein TRIBUTE
1943 – 2023
The Club was deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely death of our much loved and well-respected Chairman, Brian Stein, on 15 May last year. The news was particularly distressing as Brian had attended the annual Members Welcome to the Season event just a few weeks earlier.
It would be easy to just remember Brian for his involvement and friendships within the polo community but he was so much more than that. His life encompassed a broad spectrum of interests and achievements – recording musician, fashion photographer, entrepreneur, pilot (both fixed wing and rotary), sailor, navigator, engineer, diver, marksman, pianist, guitarist, singer and painter... the list is pretty lengthy!
Born in Johannesburg in 1943, Brian left South Africa for Israel in 1962 where he joined the Israeli Defence Force as a paratrooper. One of the most demanding militaries in the world, it is testament to Brians resilience and strength, both mentally and physically.
Following military service, Brian headed to the UK in 1964 to make his fortune – which he duly did. Starting out with the band The Frugal Sound as singer, guitarist and pianist, Brian soon moved onto fashion photography before finding his forte as a restauranteur. He began with a coffee shop in London’s Hampstead, before graduating to more salubrious establishments. Maxwells, and all its various venues, will forever be associated with Brian and few will forget his legendary hospitality. From hosting the Queen’s Cup Draw at the Café de Paris with our late President HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh through to his memorable and most generous early season drinks parties at PJ’s on the Fulham Road – Brian as always the genial and convivial host. He loved a room packed full of people. When told by his team that the guest list for a PJs Polo Party was already at
maximum, he always wanted to add more names, such was his nature.
Although a lifelong excellent shot and a man of the sea, Brian went on to discover a passion for polo in the 1980s. After first playing at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club – the Club’s founders Bryan Morrison and Norman Lobel were friends - Brian and his Ockholt team became an enduring entity at Guards Polo Club, enjoying considerable trophy success.
Assisted by a succession of players, including Derek Reid, Will Hine, Tommy Elliott, Jimmy Mulligan, Ashley Rake and, latterly, Antonio Manzorro, Ockholt secured the Spring Amateur
in 2003, Labrador in 2007, Crawford in 2007 and 2013, Roberts in 2013 and the Chairman’s in 2013 and 2014. Sadly, when competing for his own trophy as Chairman, Ockholt finished runners-up in the 2019 final after which Brian finally hung up his polo boots. However, for many Playing Members, an enduring polo memory will be the annual polo tournament for the Ockwell’s Trophy in the latter half of September. Following the end of the season at Guards Polo Club, Brian would host many players at his historic, Berkshire home. It was a time for much conviviality – polo, barbeques, parties – with Brian as ever the understated

host at the helm.
Having been elected to the Board at Guards Polo Club in 2001, Brian became an integral part of the Club’s core. He chaired the Clubhouse Redevelopment Committee which successfully concluded with HM Queen Elizabeth ll officially opening the new Clubhouse, Royal Box and La Martina Store in 2009. As a thank you, Her Majesty presented Brian with his own personal parking space in front of the Clubhouse, something of which he was most proud. If you look around the Clubhouse today Brians presence remains. The striking stick sculpture in the Stick Room and the propeller above the bar are enduring hallmarks of his influence and style.
“Brian’s life encompassed a broad spectrum of interests and achievements – recording musician, fashion photographer, entrepreneur, pilot , sailor, navigator, engineer, diver, marksman, pianist, guitarist, singer and painter”
But more was to follow. In 2018 Brian was elected Chairman and over the following five years he successfully guided the Club through the Pandemic and beyond. Under his stewardship the Club thrived and Brian successfully steered the Club’s impressive Grounds Project through to its final stage, the redevelopment of Ground Four, just before he died.
Unconventional though he was, Brian forged a close relationship with the Crown Estate and the Royal Family which bore rich rewards for the Club in the form of the successful Royal Charity Polo Day, now entering its fourth year. Charitable endeavours were in Brian’s heart and he was a prime mover and supporter of the Charles Stisted Memorial Shoot, which is held every other year in the Park and has raised many thousands of pounds for military charities.
Having been re-elected Chairman in 2022 for a second term, Brian remained passionate about securing the Club’s future. He was a people person who relished interacting with everyone from all walks of life. As such he impacted on many people’s lives who benefited from just knowing him. It
was a two-way process and Brian enjoyed engaging with people. He loved life and I am sure that the South African Cultural Gospel Choir UK, that entertained everyone so colourfully during his Memorial wake last summer, would have brought a mischievous twinkle to his eye.
Always kind and humble, it will be no surprise to learn that Brian was both a loving father and grandfather. The Chairman, Vice-President, Board of Directors, staff, Players and Members
extend our warmest wishes for the future to Platina Tong, Brian’s partner and soulmate and his beloved children, Dan, Emily and Alice and their families.
As we welcome in the season, with the new fields impatient for play, the Club’s robust health, growth and ongoing success is, without doubt, Brian’s legacy, for everyone to enjoy and benefit from. For all of this Brian we, as your Club, would just like to say thank you. u

Two very familiar names to the polo community in the UK, Guards Polo Club and La Martina, teamed up in Argentina to co-host a competitive tournament for the UK club’s players, La Martina ambassadors and members of the hosting Novillo Astrada family. Three teams took to the field at the Novillo Astrada family’s impressive La Aguada Polo Club and Resort, located in the wonderfully named Open Door, to win the Guards Polo Club Trophy. This silverware was last played for in 2018 and resides permanently in the La Aguada clubhouse.
The Guards Navy team featuring Arno Liu, Lia Salvo, Adolfo Casabal and Nacho Novillo Astrada, emerged victorious after a hotly contested round-robin style tournament. This was made up of six competitive chukkas and featured all three teams. Each squad included a high-goal
representative of the Novillo Astrada family, which added an added depth of competitiveness to each chukka.
James Neighbour, Guards Polo Club’s Chief Operating Officer and Adrian Simonetti, President of La Martina, presented all the prizes, ably supported by Thomas Hume, the Polo Manager of La Aguada.
Post presentations Adrian Simonetti,
whose father Lando founded La Martina in the 1970s, said: “What a pleasure it is for La Martina to be back here at La Aguada, to gather our friends here from Guards Polo Club and be so warmly welcomed by the Novillo Astrada family. I have been particularly delighted to welcome James Neighbour to Argentina and have the opportunity to show him the Argentine

polo season at its very best and for James to experience all that Argentina has to offer to the wider polo community. We very much look forward to making this tournament a yearly event and to welcoming many more patrons, friends and members from Guards Polo Club to Argentina in the future.”
James added his own thanks,
including special mention to the Club’s players whose support had helped make this such a memorable event. “I have been overwhelmed by the warm reception that I have received on this, my first visit to Argentina. The day here at La Aguada in particular has been outstanding and I would like to thank Adrian, Becky and Thomas for creating
such a friendly yet competitive event in such beautiful surroundings. I hope that our players, like me, will return to Guards Polo Club inspired and impatient for our new season.”
Highlighting the camaraderie on and off the field of play, which has always been a hallmark of this tournament, the presentations were followed by a traditional asado for all the players and spectators as the sun set over La Aguada’s magnificent polo fields. u

More than 120 people enjoyed Searcys first Christmas Lunch in the Clubhouse in December. This was the perfect way for the Club to bring its popular Members’ events to a seasonal close. However, before everyone sat down to a delicious festive feast, created by Searcys, Christmas carols were on the menu. The choir from the Royal Chapel in Windsor Great Park encouraged everyone to join them in singing several well-known carols.
Without doubt the perfect way to start the festive celebrations. Then, after the sumptuous feast, featuring everyone’s Christmas favourites, every diner was given a free ticket to experience the stunning Illuminations in the Park display in Windsor Great Park. Not only a wonderful way to walk off a delicious lunch, but another brilliant reminder that Christmas was just around the corner. u

director of polo’s report
Non-stop polo delivers fantastic season
Antony Fanshawe, getting ready to celebrate his 10th year in charge of all polo at the Club, reflects on a packed season where a record number of matches were played, invariably on a new polo field
Guards Polo Club played a staggering 604 games last season. A particularly impressive tally as although three fields were out of contention due to the Grounds Development Plan, the quality of the grounds that we could play was superb. Of course this meant that the Polo Office, headed up by the Director of Polo Antony Fanshawe and brilliantly supported by Polo Manager Tara Bown and Polo Secretary Shannon Stephenson worked flat out, constantly juggling the weather and teams’ no-play dates. Despite the pressure Antony recalls several highlights in 2023.
“ The standout of last year for me was an incredible Cartier Queen’s Cup final. We played almost three weeks of non-stop, two games per day polo in this tournament concluding in an awesome final [Murus Sanctus v La Magdeleine]. This is what the top end of polo is about; fast, furious polo where the players have huge respect for each other but winning is everything. It was an insane game of polo – fantastic stuff.
“In addition to acknowledging these players’ incredible passion and dedication to the game, I would also like to give a big thank you to to our ground staff, headed up by Paulius Kuklinskas. His team worked 24/7 and ensured the grounds were match-fit for every game. Running 10 games per day was very tough and the work that had to go on behind the scenes was just crazy.”
Antony added: “Thinking of the grounds recalls another highlight for me - the seeding of Ground Four at the

beginning of September. I have to admit it was such a relief to get that done despite the weather.”
The work on Ground Four was the final part of the Club’s impressive Grounds Development Plan which had started back in 2014 with the creation of the new fields at Flemish Farm. The completion of the development of Grounds Six and Eight will, in years to
come, reiterate that the Players’ and Club’s commitment into taking these steps was the right way to go.
“As a player – well an old player – the new fields make it much easier to hit the ball,” explained Antony. “You know where the ball is going to be, not in a hole and is easier for the horses. If they are properly prepared, great fields make faster polo with less stops and sharp turns. Last year the average amount of goals scored on the new fields almost doubled as compared to the old fields.
“With my Director of Polo hat on I would say that I can remember playing on Kerry Packer’s fields at Stedham [in West Sussex] and the positive difference to the game that they produced. Our new fields are a massive step forward for British polo and the production of British players. Guards Polo Club has produced five new high-goal fields in the last seven or eight years. Wow!”
Antony continued: “Cowdray Park did a massive resetting of its fields 30 years ago and they became the centre of world polo. We cannot expect players to invest in the sport if we, the people who run it, don’t back the game ourselves. The future is built from where we are now and the start point is looking much better than it was five or 10 years ago. Now, thanks to the successful redevelopment of these grounds Guards Polo Club has just set the bar even higher.”
Of course such a grounds improvement plan does not come cheaply. In a previous Yearbook it was said that the project was going to cost around £3million. Remarkably, the Club did not turn to its players for financial

support. “Of course we did think about asking our Members and high-goal teams to contribute but we felt that this would compromise our tournament relationship,” explained Antony. “So thanks to the passion of the players this Club was able to successfully build a business model that would enable a bank to financially support us.
“Since 2016 we have transformed how we charge for polo games, how we try to guarantee the best available field for the level (even if we have to rent fields), treat every team the same and demonstrate to all players the improvements that (by playing here) they are paying for. This has resulted in a huge upshift in teams entering our tournaments. The policy is clearly working. That said, every player also knows that if we want great polo fields then we all have to pay for them. We are all responsible for how things improve.”
So with the massive Grounds Development plan almost completed, what is next on Antony’s to do list at Smith’s Lawn? “Not surprisingly, there is an ever-moving argument about what to invest in next,” revealed Antony. “As Guards Polo Club is a non-profit organisation money is always short. Of course we are already focusing on our sustainability; getting greener with our machinery replacements and modernising our irrigation systems. It is brilliant how much cheaper and cleaner new machinery runs, but as a result we do need a proper machinery yard for all the kit. I would also like to plant more trees around the polo fields; create a polo paradise here in Windsor Great Park.”
With the season just a month away when writing this, what is Antony most looking forward to it 2024? “I cannot wait to see the new fields come into full action. I am not sure that we will play 22-goal on Grounds Four, Six or Eight but it will be close. I also love the return of so many people who share the same passion as me - fast clean polo.”
For a man who is about to spend the next few months mostly in the office or on a polo field and rarely at home his answer to the next question, what is the hardest part of your job, is something of a surprise. “October,” replied Antony without hesitation. “Suddenly the phone stops ringing and you definitely experience a moment of mental change.”
Antony is clearly someone who loves
“I know most aspects of this sport and this Club has given me the opportunity to carry out what I know. It has been a brilliant combination”
his job – ironically he also lists October as what he loves most about being the Director of Polo but with a caveat: “only if it’s been a good season”! He remains as passionate about polo at Guards Polo Club as he was when he first joined the Club in 2015. “I try to live by the adage ‘do what you know’. Horses were a massive part of my childhood. I left school at 16 and came to polo by chance whilst working on a ranch in the middle of Brazil. I became a polo groom, then started stick and balling, then playing and by the age of 24/25 I was playing high-goal. I was a ‘pilot’ to some of the best players/teams of my generation, and managed teams, built fields and did all kinds of jobs to make polo happen in my
life. Without fail, I wintered in Argentina for 20 years and worked for teams that played and won the Argentine Open.
“I know most aspects of this sport and this Club has given me the opportunity to carry out what I know. It has been a brilliant combination. Since 2015 we have identified where to improve, dragged polo through Covid, and still managed to keep our grounds project on track. To be honest it is almost a miracle. From the Castle Ground at Flemish Farm through to today, where fields Six and Eight – two fields that weren’t even flat, drained or rectangular – are now high-goal grounds is a great testament to all who work and play at the Club.
“It has been a bumpy road and the job is never over but I love seeing what can be achieved by people with passion. And I love that something so silly as whacking a ball off the back of a horse can produce so many opportunities for so many people from the great and the good, to the grooms, truck drivers, farriers, groundsmen etc – all of us who put our hearts into this mad sport. It’s brilliant and makes me pleased every day that I turned down the sensible school path when I was 16!” u

After navigating through a strong field of 17 teams across almost four weeks of thrilling polo, Corinne Ricard’s Murus Sanctus and Alexandre Garese’s La Magdeleine went head-tohead in a bid to win the Cartier Queen’s Cup for the first time. Corinne’s team came out best, retaining their unbeaten status to win the coveted trophy with a final score of 11–10.
Both teams were on great form from the first throw-in. La Magdeleine’s Santiago Laborde opened the scoring, but Murus Sanctus was soon on the attack thanks to Alejandro Muzzio, giving Corinne’s team a 3–1 lead. La Magdeleine took advantage of Murus Sanctus’s foul troubles in the second chukka, with Pablo MacDonough converting three penalties. However, Murus Sanctus’s Polito Pieres replied with two goals to maintain his team’s narrow, one-goal advantage. The accuracy of these evenly matched opponents was on display to the packed grandstands before the half-time bell.

Fernandez Llorente fired through goals in the third chukka for La Magdeleine, while Marcos Araya and Pieres delivered for Murus Sanctus. This resulted in these deadlocked teams heading into the break tied at 7–7.
Emerging with a charge, Murus Sanctus generated some muchneeded air in the score to open the second half. Pieres and Muzzio paired up beautifully to deliver three goals and give Murus Sanctus a 10–7 lead. Generating only two shots with no opportunities to score from penalties, La Magdeleine was forced to make a late push in the

Stifling La Magdeleine’s sudden momentum, a brilliant drive from Pieres was all Murus Sanctus needed to hold off MacDonough’s final effort and ensured Murus Sanctus held on for an electrifying victory.
Corinne Ricard received Queen’s Cup from Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK. Not surprisingly, thanks to an outstanding, seven-goal performance, Polito Pieres was named the Cartier Most Valuable Player. Meanwhile, the Cartier Best Playing Pony prize was awarded to Irenita La Kiosquera, which had been played by La Magdeleine’s Pablo MacDonough.
Earlier in the day, Siri EvjemoNysveen’s Vikings had defeated Charlie Wooldridge’s Twelve Oaks 10–9 in the sub final for the Cartier Trophy. This was a stop/ start game full of penalties, highlighting the tension and determination from both teams to secure a win on the last day of such a magnificent, 22-goal tournament. At the post-match presentations Vikings’ Juan Martin Zubia received the Cartier Most Valuable Player prize for this match. u

Four Quarters Orange claim a glorious quartet
Images by Art of Polo
Four Quarters Orange lifted the Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Windsor Cup for the fourth time in 2023, making them one of only three teams that has won this historic trophy more than three times in the past 68 years. Simon Arber’s team had to work hard for this 7–6 victory though as their opponents, Dubai Polo Team, fought back strongly in the second half of this 15-goal tussle.
It had looked remarkably straightforward for Four Quarters Orange in the first half. An impressive partnership between Ignacio Negri and Simon Prado, who was later
named the Out-Sourcing Inc. Most Valuable Player, saw Four Quarters leading 6–2 up at half-time. Surprisingly, Dubai struggled to keep possession of the ball and tensions showed on the field, with Carlos Maria Ulloa receiving a yellow card for disagreeing with the umpires in the third.
As the spectators returned to their seats for the second half it looked as if this match was pretty much decided. Dubai had other ideas. Eager to repeat the team’s success from 1995, Javier Guerrero singlehandedly brought Dubai back into contention in the fourth. Two penalties and a field goal from this five-goal player not

only raised Dubai’s hopes but kept Four Quarters off the scoreboard too.
The fifth and final chukka delivered some fast, end-to-end polo and when Ulloa successfully converted a penalty to take the scores level (6–6), there was a hint that this game may go into extra time. Four Quarters Orange quickly regained their advantage though, thanks to a successful penalty off the stick of Negri. With the clock now ticking down Guerrero had a fast run to goal, much to the delight of the crowd, but the bell cruelly rang out before he could reach the goalposts, ensuring an historic

The sub final, for the Mountbatten Cup, which was played earlier in the day, saw Ferne Park/Cowdray Vikings keen to defend their title. Jean Paul Luksic had other ideas though and his Gaston team won this contest 7–6. Luksic was also named the Most Valuable Player.
The Royal Windsor Cup is the Club’s oldest tournament, first played for in 1955. So it is fitting that the Club, in partnership with
Out-Sourcing Inc, always creates a finals day to remember. The 2023 event was no exception thanks to a breathtaking pony stunt riding display from Karl Ude Martinez’s Knights of Middle England and a wonderful carriage driving display from the British Driving Society. u

Monterosso drives hard to claim Talacrest title
Alessandro Bazzoni lifted the Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup for the first time, thanks to a narrow, 12–11 win over Ojo Caliente. Some excellent team-work from Jeronimo del Carril and Ignacio Toccalino, plus a goal from Bazzoni himself, ensured Monterosso team dominated the first half of this high-goal contest.
Goals from Facundo Sola, Matt Perry and Ana Escobedo, the latter firing through a wonderful goal from distance, kept Ojo Caliente in contention, but Monterosso were in the driving seat.
So everyone wondered what Ojo Caliente’s team manager, Glen Gilmore, said to his squad at the break when they returned to the field firing on all cylinders. John Paul Clarkin started Ojo Caliente’s comeback with a goal, followed by some lovely

play between himself and Perry to put another on the scoreboard. Sola then found the flags with a minute left of the fourth period, while Clarkin finished the chukka with another goal to level the scores on the bell.
The many spectators at the Club were now treated to some epic horse races between Clarkin and del Carril which brought this game alive. With the clock ticking away in the fifth, Sola tried hard to find a clear shot to goal to level the scores once more but some great defensive play from Monterosso, especially from the Talacrest Most Valuable Player, Segundo Darritchon, proved impossible to negotiate.
There was still all to play for –especially when the sixth chukka started with a penalty conversion for Ojo Caliente, levelling the scores once more. Del Carril, riding the Talacrest Best Playing Pony, Lucky Lady, then raced to goal to give Monterosso the lead which he followed up with another from the next throw-in. Monterosso now resembled the

team that had been so dominant in the first half. Tension started to show too, resulting in penalties for both Ojo Caliente and Monterosso. These shots put the score at 12–10 in favour of Monterosso with only two minutes of the match remaining. Sola converted another penalty for Ojo Caliente but time was in short supply and when the final whistle came it was Monterosso with the advantage, winning the game 12–11.

Bazzoni received the trophy from the tournament sponsor John Collins, founder of Talacrest Classic Ferraris. In a moment unique to this tournament, John Collins also awarded a prize to the Best Ferrari of the day. This went to Peter Hogan’s black, 1990 Testarossa. This car was one of 50 Italian Thoroughbreds that had come to the Club with the Ferrari Owners Club of Great Britain. These were not the only stunning Ferraris on show at Smith’s Lawn though as John had brought eight of his own magnificent cars to the Club.
In another unique moment, synonymous with the Talacrest competition, all the players were driven onto the field of play at the start of the match in these mighty Italian thoroughbreds. A wonderful spectacle and the perfect start to an outstanding game of high performance. u

Clarinda Tjia-Dharmadi’s Semper Anticus never gave up though and fought back strongly in the final chukka. Lucy Coddington and Nina Clarkin delivered some excellent team-work to close the gap. However, the impressive play and superb

goalscoring from the Argentine Lia Salvo, particularly in the early stages of the game – Vikings were 5–2 up at half-time – had given Vikings a comfortable cushion.
Not surprisingly, Lia’s confident play was rewarded with the Most Valuable Player prize, while the Best Playing Pony honours went to Nina’s Lovelocks Florin, a 10-year-old bay whom she had played in the last chukka. uards Polo Club hosted a dream international day for England polo, with victories in both matches for the home side. The King’s Coronation Cup began with a 15-goal match between Young England and the Commonwealth for The Whitbread Trophy.
By the second chukka, the Young England team, led by Louis Hine, had taken control of the play. They delivered a relentless pace that proved too much for their Commonwealth opponents. The home team pulled away in the second half and, despite some fantastic rallying play from the Commonwealth in the final chukka, Hine and his team could not be caught, winning the game 11–4.
This wave of success continued into the afternoon, with the spectators treated to a spirited clash for the King’s Coronation Cup. The Commonwealth, who received a goal on handicap, were keen to extend their 2–1 record against England in this match, while the England captain Tommy Beresford was determined to even the score.
Beresford highlighted his conviction by delivering a lofted penalty to equalise early into the first chukka. He followed this up by winning a big ride-off to swing the board into England’s favour. Another confident penalty followed, but Chris Mackenzie prevented a clean sweep by hammering home a goal for the Commonwealth in the final 30 seconds of this chukka.
The second opened with some missed early chances for the Commonwealth, while England’s Ollie Cudmore and Max Charlton used huge hits to up the England score, regularly finding James Beim ready to fire the goals home. The Commonwealth team, coached by John Horswell, found their momentum in the third chukka and a goal from captain Fred Mannix kept Commonwealth hopes high heading into the half-time break.
The second half started with an action-packed chukka that saw five goals added to the board. However, it was the fifth chukka that demonstrated why England have impressed on the international stage; brilliant teamwork proved the key to their success. Beresford converted a penalty before Cudmore, fighting a ride-off from Mannix, found Beim at the goal to give England a clear, five-goal
lead (11–6). The Commonwealth were still fighting though and Mannix kept his team in the hunt with a successful penalty conversion before the fifth chukka concluded.
The impressive, Beim-Cudmore alliance swept through the field once again the start the final chukka, with Beim scoring through an open goal thanks to Cudmore’s defensive play holding off the competition. Mannix scored again to bring the score to 12–8, but the England team proved too strong for the Commonwealth horsepower. Despite fighting until the final bell, the visitors could not fend off England.
The England team received the mighty cup from The Right Honourable Patricia Scotland KC, Baroness Scotland of Asthal, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth’s Chris Mackenzie took home the Most Valuable Player prize, having played a brilliant attacking game. He also received the Best Playing Retrained Racehorse

prize for his own Biento (racing name Badalona Breeze), who was formerly trained by Mick Appleby.
The Best Playing Pony prize was awarded to Beresford’s own Teddy, with his groom Raul Mora picking up the cash prize. Beresford’s mother, Teresa, was on hand to present the Donoso Trophy, traditionally awarded to the captain of the opposing team, to Fred Mannix in memory of her late brother, Gabriel Donoso, whose name appears twice on the Coronation Cup after captaining a victorious Chile in 1998 and 2004. Another award on this day was the Ferguson Trophy for the HPA's Young Player of the Year. This was presented to Hugo Taylor by Susan Ferguson and Andrew Barlow.
With so much to celebrate, the party continued until late and featured a performance from the Rick Parfitt Jnr Band on the La Martina Lawn. A fitting end to an incredible day of international sport.

La Martina VARSITY TROPHY
TOxford clings to Varsity title
his historic day of student polo did not disappoint, delivering strong sport from some of the most famous educational establishments in the world.
The 124th edition of the annual Varsity match, one of the oldest polo trophies still played for in the world, was again won by Oxford. The dark blue shirts have dominated this match for almost a decade and won the 2023 test 7–5. However Cambridge, put up a spirited defence and remained in contention for all four chukkas.
One reason for Cambridge’s improvement in form despite being substantially lower handicapped than their rivals, was their new partnership with the King Power organisation. This high-goal outfit had been supporting the university squad with ponies and training from the start of the 2023 season and was in evidence throughout the match. Cambridge might not have found the flags after the first chukka, but they made Oxford work hard for victory.

Martina Most Valuable Player prize after a strong, defensive game. Camila received her prize from the Club’s Chairman Lt Col Sean O’Dwyer and Becky Simpson, Manager of the La Martina Store here at Guards Polo Club. This brand has supported student polo here at Smith’s Lawn for more than a decade.
Thomas Gordon-Colebrooke was the stand-out player for Oxford, firing though four goals, plus a penalty for his team. He was brilliantly backed up by Bolawa Tejuoso, who made sure he was always in the right place to pick up a pass. Bolawa later received the La Martina Best Playing Pony prize for Escobito,
who is owned by Shoreline team patron Tunde Karim.
Later in the day Harrow retained the Jenny Walton Masters Trophy following its annual schools test against Eton. This was another closely fought match, with Eton ahead, 3–2 at half-time. It went to 4–4 at the end of the third but Harrow were able to pull away by one in the fourth to win the game. Hector Rogberg was named the La Martina Most Valuable Player. Eton’s Oliver Drewitt received the La Martina Best Playing Pony prize for Bracero. Oliver, a playing member here at Guards Polo Club, had played this 11-year-old pony in the fourth chukka.

Varsity programme was the return of the Atlantic Cup. This trophy is traditionally played for by two Ivy-League, American universities, Harvard and Yale. Harvard won the 2023 contest, impressively defeating Yale (rec 3½ goals on handicap) 12–4½.
La Martina Varsity Day had started with the traditional Old Blues match, featuring former students from both Oxford (rec 0.5 on handicap) and Cambridge and starring some familiar names from Guards Polo Club. Oxford Old Blues ran out the winners, heading home with the Arthur Lucas Trophy thanks to a 5–3½ victory. u

Great Oaks fell tough opposition
The Archie David Cup is regarded as one of the most competitive in the Club’s roster of tournaments. It is the UK’s leading eight-goal competition and always attracts an impressive number of teams. The 2023 season was no exception with 26 squads taking part.
So the finalists, Great Oaks and Tempest, had already had to work hard just to reach this final. In fact, these two teams were so evenly matched that it was hard to call a winner – even in
the fourth chukka. Dillon Bacon’s Great Oaks won the match 5-3 but could not relax for a minute.
Gustav Rausing’s Tempest team opened the scoring but the spectators had to wait until the second chukka for the first goal of the match. Bacon then picked up a lovely pass from Nicolas Roberts to equalise, reminding everyone how even this battle was. Ryan Pemble fired through the third goal just before half-time, ensuring Tempest had the narrowest of advantages going into the break. The third was almost a replica of the first half. Roberts levelled the score for Great Oaks before Rausing fired a big hit up to Segundo Darritchon, who put the ball through the flags. Tempest had retained their one goal advantage going into the fourth and final chukka. Felipe Gomez produced a lovely steal to bring Great Oaks level again early in the fourth. Then after some fast-paced horse races between Bacon and Pemble, Josh Nimmo fired through a goal. With only a minute left on the clock Great Oaks were in the lead (4-3) for the first time. Thirty seconds later Great Oaks

were awarded a 40-yard penalty, which Roberts successfully converted. This sharp shooting ensured Great Oaks lifted the mighty trophy.
Great Oaks’ Felipe Gomez was named the Most Valuable Player. His team-mate Nicolas Roberts received the Images of Polo Best Playing Pony prize for Valorada.
With so many teams taking part in the Archie David the sub final is always a strong game too. This was won by Ainsley Saddlery, defeating Oriflamme 7-5. Winning patron Andrew Dechet received the Caterham Cup from Lt Col Sean O'Dwyer and Jane Broadbent. Meanwhile, those Guards teams that are knocked out of the competition after the league stages are
invited to take part in the Claude Pert Cup competition. This was won by Ming Yun Polo Team after a roundrobin game. u

La Irenita battle to win mighty Shield
La Irenita, named after the MacDonough family’s bloodstock breeding enterprise in Argentina, captured the Indian Polo Challenge Shield, a competitive, 18-goal tournament that had attracted 17 teams in midsummer. It is played as part of the Hurlingham Polo Association’s 18-goal Victor Ludorum competition.
In a tight match, sadly played in persistent drizzle, La Irenita defeated Simon Arber’s Four Quarters Orange 5–4. This low score was testament to how evenly matched the finalists were in both attack and defence. In fact only three goals had been scored by half-time – with the score reading 2–1 to Four Quarters!
Ignacio Negri had opened the scoring in the first chukka for Four Quarters Orange, but La Irenita had to wait until the third
chukka to get themselves on the scoreboard. This was thanks to the successful conversion of a 30-yard penalty by Matias MacDonough. Arber then fired through a field goal to keep his Four Quarters squad ahead by one at the break.
Matias converted a second penalty to level the score in the fourth, with his uncle, Pablo, firing through a goal to put La Irenita into the lead for the first time. However, Simon Prado, later named the Most Valuable Player, picked up a lovely pass from Gonzalo Ferrari to again level the scores.
Pablo and Irenita La Kiosquera, who later received the Best Playing Pony prize, raced the ball from the half-way line to goal early in the fifth. It was not surprising that La Kiosquera stood out – just a month earlier she had been named Best

When Matias converted another penalty in this fifth chukka La Irenita suddenly found themselves with a two-goal advantage. With just three minutes left to play, Negri converted a penalty to close the gap, but a subsequent safety 60, also off the stick of Negri, went wide, ensuring this game finished in five chukkas and La Irenita would be heading home with the magnificent Shield.

The M Polo Team came from three goals down at half-time and an enforced change in personnel to add their name to the Duke of Cornwall Trophy in 2023. A golden goal off the stick of Max Charlton in extra time ensured Maximilian Singhoff’s team put their name on this 16-goal trophy, winning against King Power 9–8 in a thrilling fifth chukka. The team had to fight hard to win this match though. Not only were they facing a competitive King Power squad but had to sub out their six-goal player, the South African international Chris Mackenzie, due to injury in the second chukka. Fellow sixgoaler Ollie Cudmore, who had played in the sub final for Madams Farm, took Mackenzie’s place and was impressive from the off. Yaguara battle back to win Wellington honours

Yaguara won a competitive Duke of Wellington Trophy final in late August with a 9–7 win over King Power. Martina Lowe’s team were behind, 5–4, at half-time but produced a strong second half to comfortably win this 12-goal final. Goals from the talented young player, Leon Donoso, who was later named the Most Valuable Player, and Chris Mackenzie in the third chukka gave Yaguara a crucial, one-goal lead going into the fourth and final chukka. Two further goals from Mackenzie and Andrea Vianini only confirmed Yaguara’s superiority, winning the match 9–7.
Beltran Di Paola had worked hard to keep King Power in contention throughout this match, delivering five of his team’s seven goals. However Yagura’s strong defensive play ensured King Power were unable to regain the advantage in the final minutes of the match.

Ana Escobedo’s team, in their memorable green shirts, stood atop the podium in both the 18-goal Oxfordshire Cup, played at Les Lions, and the 15-goal here at Guards Polo Club. The latter tournament, the La Martina Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s Centenary Trophy, saw Ojo Caliente defeat a competitive Limitless/Delaney Polo 8–5 in an impressive game across four chukkas.
Facundo Sola fired through the majority of Ojo Caliente’s goals, ensuring his team was 5–2 up at half-time. Some strong play from Limitless/Delaney Polo in the third stopped this goal rush and enabled Rashid El-Ashkar’s team to get back into contention. With the scoreboard reading 5–4 to Ojo Caliente going into the fourth and final chukka, there was all to play for. Sola was determined for victory to be Ana’s though and fired through a hat-trick

Sons, daughters and siblings of Club players come together in our popular youth tournament, highlighting the talent of our youngest Members. The competitive, yellow-shirted Coworth Park team won Guards Polo Club’s popular youth tournament. The result is a brilliant morning of polo, with plenty of action on the field of play. Not surprisingly, there was plenty of vocal support

The 2023 event was so popular that the 16 entries were divided into four teams – Coworth Park, Flemish Farm, La Martina and Guards Polo Club. They finished in this order after eight fourminute chukkas. With prizes from La Martina, represented on the day by Holly Smith, there was all to play for and the youngest players at the Club delivered some stand-out performances.

Commanding cavalry win treble
The Queen’s Royal Hussars won the prestigious Forsyth Inter Regimental Trophy for the third successive year. The QRH proved that they are at the top of their game by dominating this military final and delivered a convincing performance to defeat the Royal Artillery (RA) 7–1.
The Queen's Royal Hussars (QRH) were in command of this match from the first whistle and were 4–0 up at half-time. The RA restored a little honour in the final chukka but the damage had
been done and it was the QRH’s Captain Jamie Fry, the highest handicapped player on the field, who stepped forward to lift the trophy, one of the oldest pieces of silverware still played for today. Fry then returned to the presentation arena to receive the Pringle Cup, awarded to the Most Valuable Player in this military match.
Meanwhile, the ForbesCockell Award, for the most unique moment in the match, went to the RA’s Major Will Mawby. He received this prize from the late Major

Flying fourth chukka reaps rewards
Watchcentre/ Ming- Yun collected the six-goal Spring Tournament thanks to an impressive fourth chukka. Six goals in this final period of play, more than this team had scored in the previous three chukkas, saw them win this match 11-8. Their opponents, Harum Scarum were in the lead (3–2) after the first and again (8–5) after the third but had no answer to this late flurry of goals from the winners. Ziwen Arno Liu, patron of the Ming-Yun team was injured – his place was taken by Konstantin Graf von Schweinitz – and so he stepped forward to present the trophy to his co-patron Raj Jain. The Best Playing pony prize was collected by Adolfo Casabal for Juan
Ignacio. Casabal’s team-mate, Oscar Mancini, was named Most Valuable Player.
The sub final saw a win for Julian and Riley Leake’s J & R Polo team. They beat CHEDS 10–6 in another strong game in which the teams were level at half-time. However, four goals from J & R Polo in the fourth chukka confirmed their victory. u

The successful partnership of Simon Franc and Alan Fall reaped rewards in late July when playing in the Social Cup. Playing under the name of Mad Lemons, this successful duo added this 10-goal trophy to their 2023 haul. They defeated Jeremy Pemberton’s Conosco 8–6 across four chukkas in a rain-soaked final.
Simon Franc was later rewarded with the Most Valuable Player prize. Meanwhile, his team-mate Hissam Ali Hyder received the Images of Polo Best Playing Pony prize for Laguna.
The sub final was a more decisive victory for Jonathan and Melanie Hare’s Harum Scarum, who received half a goal on handicap. They beat Carisbrooke 11½–8 in better weather, earlier in the day.
This finals day was also a fundraiser for The Not Forgotten

Conosco delivered a convincing performance to win the Phoenician Cup in July 2023. Jeremy Pemberton’s squad defeated last year’s champions, Segavas, 10–6 across four chukkas. Stable Cottage battle hard to win military honour
Stable Cottage stayed focused and in command to win the 2023 edition of the Major General’s Cup. Major Jamie Hayward’s team beat a competitive Sladmore squad, last year’s runners-up, 4–3. However Alexander Nix, a key member of Edward Horswell’s team did head home with the Most Valuable Player prize after a strong performance for Sladmore. Meanwhile, Antony Fanshawe received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony for Charlie Wooldridge’s Mantecol.
Six teams had entered this annual contest featuring military squads and Club teams. In addition the Club welcomed an ensemble from the Band of the Household Cavalry, plus a wonderful appearance from Juno, the first female Household Cavalry drum horse, ensuring there were echoes of the Club’s military roots throughout the day.
Everyone had an opportunity to play on finals day. First up was a match featuring the Household Cavalry versus Konstantin Graf von Schweinitz and Alan Fall’s blended Porto Ronco Dogs. The military team won this encounter,

Equine VIP
Guards Polo Club welcomed a very special visitor to the Club during the final of the Major General’s Trophy. HM Queen Elizabeth ll’s beloved Fell pony Emma paraded the teams in the final of the Major General’s Cup.
Emma was accompanied by Terry Pendry, who was Her Majesty’s Head Groom for some 28 years, regularly accompanying the Monarch on her rides at Windsor. This unique visit had been organised by the Military Knights of Windsor, of which Terry is one.
Her Majesty regularly rode Emma, now aged 27, at Windsor for some 18 years, the last time on 18 July 2022 – just two days before Her Majesty headed to Balmoral for the last time. Emma then had a key role at Her Majesty’s funeral standing on the Long Walk with Terry as the funeral cortege passed.

Black proved stronger than orange in the penultimate week of the 2023 season.
Romilla Arber’s Four Quarters Black came out best in a contest against her husband, Simon’s Four Quarters Orange in the Autumn Nations Cup on The Queen’s Ground. Thirteen teams had entered this 12-goal tournament and the final did not disappoint. This was a wonderfully close battle between two teams that know every inch of each other’s game.
Romilla was the first to find the flags in the first, firing through a great goal, but Four Quarters Orange’s Ignacio Negri first levelled the scores and then fired through a huge hit, at least 80 yards out, to put Simon’s team ahead in the second. A penalty from the Black’s Segundo Darritchon made things even once more. Then, thanks to some

great teamwork between Simon Prado, who a week later would be named the Club’s Best Professional Player of the Year, Darritchon and Nicolas Roberts, the Black team secured the narrowest of advantages (3–2) heading into the break.
Sadly the rain made an appearance in the second half but it did not stop Prado, who fired through a further goal for Four Quarters Black. Then with just a minute of the third remaining, Four Quarters Orange’s Emanuel Arber passed a great shot to Tom Morley to close the gap to 4–3.
So with all to play for the tension on the field was evident. Prado scored again to give Romilla’s team a two-goal advantage once more. Emanuel wasn’t showing his mother any favours though and scored for his father’s team. However time was now against Simon’s team and when the final bell rang it was a
victory for Romilla and her Four Quarters Black team.
Four Quarters Black’s Nicolas Roberts was named the Most Valuable Player. His team-mate, Simon Prado, collected the Images of Polo Best Playing Pony prize for the 11-year-old mare, Gete Plegaria, whom he had played in the third chukka.
