Seaford Scene December 2021

Seaford Photographic Society We were fortunate to have three excellent speakers giving talks during October, starting with photographer Roff Smith (www.roffsmithphotography.com), a regular contributor to National Geographic magazine. For the past 30 years he has been travelling extensively and photographing for some of the world’s great publications. He has visited every continent and over 100 countries. As well as giving us some history of the origins of National Geographic, he shared a selection of his wonderful photos. Many of these were taken within a few miles of his home in St Leonards-on-Sea and featured meticulously planned images of him on his bike at various locations. We particularly liked his Edward Hopper style images and he even has a print of one of these in New York’s Edward Hopper Museum. Round 3 of the PDI League competition was judged by Gerald Kitiyakara LRPS. In the standard group Peter Cavanagh and Martin Brewer both scored 20/20 for their images. There were eight 20s awarded in the advanced group, including two each for both Chris Dawson and Simon Watkins. Our second talk of the month was by professional IT instructor Richard O’Brien and was entitled Architecture: Exposure to Edit. This was a two-hour talk on shooting internal and external architecture images, covering equipment, tricks and thought process, all from the point of view of an amateur photographer. It also included a live demonstration of editing techniques using a combination

of Lightroom and Photoshop and I think we all came away having learnt something new. The above talk was very well timed as it was followed by the first two set-subject competitions of the season, for Architecture and Monochrome. There were 27 monochrome images entered, and Jamie Sheldon took the winner’s trophy with one of his excellent Formula 1 motor racing shots. Chris Dawson took second place and Simon Watkins third. Thelma Long’s very creative image won the Architecture competition, with Kevin Smoker and Chris Dawson second and third. The final talk of the month was by acclaimed artist and photographer Jane Lazenby BA(hons) Fine Art, QTFE(2), ASEA, LRPS, DPAGB, BPE4, EFIAP, AMPA (www. ejlazenbyphotography.co.uk). Jane started her career as an artist but then discovered the creative potential of Photoshop and now produces beautiful fine art photographs. This particular talk was all about how to use Photoshop to create textures and use them to produce composite images using layers. The first part of the evening was about finding and photographing suitable textures, and after the break she went on to do some live edits to show the artistic potential of this technique. Members were particularly impressed with the demonstration of how to easily improve distracting backgrounds using simple texture layers and blending modes. You can see all you need to know about the club on our website www.seafordps.org, including all the latest news, programme of events, successful images, competition results, and more. It is updated every week.
