DECK THE HALLS:

Christine trained at Liverpool School of Art during the 1980s specialising in printed textiles. She worked for design studios and freelanced in London, selling her artwork internationally to fashion companies who produced her designs on all manner of clothing.

Gallery Uno, 14 High Street, Seaford BN25 1PG Open Daily: Mon – Sat 10am – 4pm, Sundays 12pm – 3pm from Thursday 2nd December until Thursday 23rd December.

In 2001 Christine retrained to become a primary school teacher, working in London for six years before moving to East Sussex to continue teaching in rural village schools around Heathfield.

An exhibition of fine art, design and craft for the festive season

It was a truly momentous event for the Sussex Arts Collective members participating in their inaugural exhibition UNO ONE and those who toiled over redecorating the gallery as the doors were opened on 4th November to their own dedicated exhibition space, GALLERY UNO. Their reward was a steady stream of eager visitors making their way to see what was on offer, many leaving the gallery with their spoils and those who left empty handed vowing to return soon. And so, their season of monthly exhibitions continues. On Thursday 2nd December the gallery opens for the festive offering, Deck the Halls. A fresh crop of exhibitors will join the gallery to display a profusion of quality fine art, design and craft items that make thoughtful gifts for friends, family or even for oneself at surprisingly affordable prices. The gallery will also launch the first of six specially commissioned limited edition prints designed by Stefan Mucha of Sussex Art Prints. This will be a chance for you to own this very unique numbered and certified piece of artwork based on the UNO logo. In this edition Seaford Scene our popular feature that puts a spotlight on one of the Collective’s members returns. This month is Christine Masters, excited to be part of the Sussex Collective’s first ever Christmas show at Gallery Uno.

Christine Masters BA Hons

Following careers in textile design and then in teaching, Christine is now happiest drawing and painting from her home and garden in Cross-in-Hand.

Leaving teaching 2½ years ago Christine followed her overwhelming desire to ‘just draw’. Much of Christine’s work is inspired by the beautiful scenery of the South Downs and coastland. She particularly enjoys the challenge of creating tone and atmosphere in monotone, and loves the immediacy of fine-line pens to describe the flow, texture and pattern of landscapes and landmarks. Her graphic images are then further personalised with her own style of decorative foliage. Christine also makes detailed botanical drawings, often floral, but also natural forms such as fruit and vegetables, seed heads and conkers. Using fine-line pens she adds colourwashes to the images with permanent inks to fully describe the beauty of these forms. Christine also draws and paints clients’ homes and their gardens to commission. She is extremely versatile and has been commissioned to capture various other subjects, such as house interiors, dragonflies and even tractors! In the short time Christine has been actively painting and drawing again, she has produced a large portfolio. She exhibits with the Sussex Collective in Seaford, the Green Tree Gallery in Horsham, the Grierson Galleries in Cranbrook and takes part in South East Open Studios events. She also enjoys the opportunity to meet people, selling prints, cards and discussing possible commissions at art and craft fairs.
