Raub has seen 12 of his recordings chart in the top 50 of the Texas Music Chart and the Texas Radio Report. Paving the way for Seguin City celebrates first female journey lineman

(Seguin) -- Madison Battise is forging a path in a male-dominated career field. Battise joined the City of Seguin in 2018 as an Apprentice Lineman in the Electric Utilities Department, and recently completed a 4-year Apprenticeship Program - making her the first female Journeyman Lineman in the city’s history.

Battise earned her Journeyman Lineman certification after successfully completing 8,000 hours of training through the City of Seguin Electric Utilities Department Apprenticeship Program.

Her journey to become a lineman began when Battise took an electrical trade class in residential and commercial wiring at Brunswick Job Corps in Georgia.

After considering potential occupation paths, Battise decided that a lineman career would be ideal due to the unique aspect of the field. This led her to San Marcos, Texas where she went on to complete an Advanced Electrical, Overhead Line Construction Program at Gary Job Corps.

“While it’s absolutely a tough industry I chose to pursue, I feel honored and truly blessed to be able to call myself the City of Seguin’s first female Journeyman Lineman,” said Battise. “Over the past five years, I’ve prepared for this accomplishment by completing training through the City’s merchant program, training at the Northwest Lineman College and competing in the annual Lineman Rodeo to obtain my Department of Labor certification,” said Battise.

City officials say Battise serves as a positive example for other females who want to break barriers as a journeyman

lineman. “My advice to other women getting into this field is that while it’s challenging at times, you must find what motivates you to keep going. It’s important to be a hard worker, determine your purpose and be dedicated to your craft,” said Battise.

The City's Electric Utilities Department has had an approved U.S. Department of Labor Apprenticeship program since 2013. During this time, a number of qualified Journeyman

Lineman have completed the rigorous program, which provides an opportunity to learn a trade without having to attend college.

Raub, continued.

He added, “So, we always battle for the greatest lines. And surrounding yourself with great songwriters like that and to actually go in a room and battle for the best song that you can possibly come out with, I love writing with those guys. You just kinda gotta check your feelings at the door and say ‘hey we can beat that, we got a better line for that.’”

The Houston-born and Magnolia, Texas raised singer has toured the United States extensively. In the past two years, Raub and his band have been all over the nation traveling to cities and towns in a tour bus. They’ve been up to the Great Lakes, toured the southeastern part of the country and played many dates in the Lone Star State.

Raub says he’s thrilled for the opportunity to play Central Park for the first time.

“We are excited to be coming to Seguin. It’s always great to pick up a new market,” said Raub. “To be called on in these places is always phenomenal for us. And to be coming to Seguin, we’re super excited to even get the opportunity.

“For people to connect to our music is just awesome,” Raub said of performing to new crowds. “For people to be singing our songs when we get somewhere is the biggest compliment you can give anybody who plays a song.”

Jesse Raub, Jr. will headline Freedom Fiesta on Saturday. Susan Hickman will open the concert, which is free and open to the public.

This year’s event will also include the annual Kiddie Parade at 6 p.m.; non-profit food vendors, food trucks, bouncy houses, face painting plus beer garden.

The KWED Freedom Fiesta will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Central Park in downtown Seguin.

Nagel

Clifton “Buddy” Roland Nagel passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Seguin, Texas, at the age of 73. Buddy had numerous health issues in his life’s journey, but he accepted them all with a positive, strong, and humorous attitude. Stage 4 colorectal cancer was his last challenge in life, and he did as he always did, managed it with incredible strength, courage, and humor. Cancer never got the best of him. He lived his life to the fullest every day.

Buddy was born on January 25, 1950, in Seguin, to Roland and Viola (Naumann) Nagel, given the name Clifton to honor his dad’s brother. During Buddy’s childhood, he lived in Alaska, Colorado, New York, and Florida, while his dad served in the U.S. Air Force. Seguin was always his family’s home base so after his father retired from the military, the family returned to Seguin, where Buddy graduated from Seguin High School, Class of 1968.

Like his father, Buddy was good with his hands. He had such big, strong hands. There wasn’t much that he couldn’t build or repair with those hands. He was a skilled carpenter and artisan with a keen sense of understanding about how things worked. He was always willing to take the time to offer advice and assistance on house repairs, mechanical issues and more. He used these talents for the good of the community too. You can see and appreciate his work at The Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, the First Church, the Calaboose, Emanuel’s Lutheran Church, The Guadalupe County Humane Society, The Woods Homestead, and many other locations around town.

Buddy’s knowledge and curiosity extended to many areas over the years. While living in Austin, Buddy worked in the construction field, building homes, and becoming a demolition expert. He created his own company, Nagel Construction, and took on historical home projects that extended into the Alamo Heights area. He studied Feng Shui in California and became a Feng Shui Master and advised clients in the best way to set up their homes. He was very involved in the Austin music scene as a Roadie for The Lotions and the Sound Manager for I-Tex and The Flamingo Cantina on 6th Street in Austin. He was a Master Scuba Diver and moved to Cozumel, teaching scuba diving to the many tourists who visited there. This also opened his passion for underwater photography. One summer he even traveled the country with a carnival based out of Chicago, setting up and breaking down the large rides. He built his own unique two-story home in Johnson City on the Pedernales River. He was a Master Gardener and enjoyed landscaping and plants wherever he lived. He loved animals of all kinds, traveling anywhere and everywhere, was a great cook and had an extensive collection of miniature trains.

Buddy was always friendly with a great sense of humor. He had fun teasing and joking with everyone he met but especially with his beloved family, friends, doctors, nurses, and crew members. He had a curiosity about life and people that was contagious to anyone who was with him. He was a dreamer, an artist and a visionary.

In 2002, he reunited with the love of his life from his past, Jane Donegan, after being apart for almost 25 years. Buddy moved back to Seguin at that time to be with Jane and they were together until his passing. They were life partners and best friends for a total of 29 years.

Buddy was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Edward Sagebiel. He is survived by his love, Jane Donegan, three sisters, Ruth Sagebiel, Joan Nagel (husband, Tracy Weinberg) and Susan Nagel and his aunt Georgia Lee Naumann, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.

Very special thank yous go to Larry Davis, Gail Parsons, Shantiel and Jr. Pardo, Elara Caring Hospice Care, each of Buddy’s doctors and nurses and the medical staffs at GRMC, Texas Oncology, MD Anderson, Ritchie Limb and Brace, Advanced Home Health Services and Remarkable Healthcare. Thank you for taking this final journey with us and for making it easier and with more love, comfort and kindness than we could have ever imagined.

A celebration of Buddy’s life will be held on Sunday, July 9th at 2:00 p.m. at the Seguin Guadalupe County Heritage Museum, 114 North River Street, Seguin, TX. Family and friends are invited and encouraged to join us and share their stories and their memories of Buddy.

Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union, the Minnesota Democrat said the U.S. now has a “patchwork” of abortion laws that varies from state to state. She noted a ten-year-old girl in Ohio who had to go out of state for an abortion when she became pregnant after being raped. Saturday marked exactly one year since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned its landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

U.S. Agencies Still Divided On COVID-19 Origins

(Washington, DC) -- US Intelligence agencies are still divided on where COVID-19 came from. On Friday, a new report was released from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on the origins of the pandemic. Five intelligence agencies, including the National Intelligence Council, believe natural exposure to an infected animal is the most likely cause. However, the FBI and the Department of Energy concluded a laboratory-associated incident was a more likely scenario for the first human infection. The CIA says it was unable to determine the precise origin of the pandemic, as all the theories “rely on significant assumptions” or face “conflicting reporting.”
