1. How did you become a writer/contributor for Sioux Falls Woman Magazine?

1. How did you become a writer/contributor for Sioux Falls Woman Magazine?

When I was approached to write for Sioux Falls Woman Magazine, I was excited to be a part of something specifically focused on women and their contributions to our community. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting amazing people over the years and sharing their stories with others.

Funny story, I was working as an interior decorator and wanted to incorporate my writing background and degree when a coworker mentioned this new magazine he was hired to take photographs for. He passed my name along and the rest is history. I love to write about home and garden even though my degree allows me to tackle any topic.

2. What is your favorite thing to do? I love working on my home, upcycling and updating decor and furniture, spending time with my family and pets as well as cheering on the Cyclones - go Iowa State!

2. What is your favorite thing to do? Hands down – working out, especially lifting weights. It’s a great release for stress and a great way to socialize and meet new friends.

3. What is your philosophy on life?

3. Something everyone should know about you?

Good things happen to good people.

I am an only child and I have an only child. I am also a published author. I wrote a book a few years ago on a local historical architect, W.L. Dow: The Architect Who Shaped Sioux Falls.

4. What are you most thankful for? I'm thankful for my beautiful family and the joy they have brought me over the years. They have all made me a better person and I am so proud that they all chose to serve in the military defending our country! 5. What is on your bucket list for the new year? I hope to visit Scotland for my 30th wedding anniversary with my husband Marty in April. 6. What is your most favorite article you have written for Sioux Falls Woman Magazine? Wow, I have too many over twenty years to have just one! The most recent that touched my heart was Kim Hubers. Her love of family, animals and commitment to the military and Veterans as well as wanting to help others in positive ways mirrors so much of what I value in my own personal life. 7. What do you like most about Sioux Falls Woman Magazine? I'd have to say the friendships I've made as well as the amazing people I've gotten to know along my 20 year journey. They have been a true inspiration for me!

4. What are you most thankful for? I am grateful that I have a healthy family – especially proud of my daughter who is growing up to be such a smart and compassionate young lady. 5. What is on your bucket list for the new year? I don’t know if it’s for the new year but I’m obsessed with ancient Egypt and plan to go there someday. 6. What is your most favorite article you have written for Sioux Falls Woman Magazine? I’d have to say it was a home feature that I did for Margaret. Her home is so beautiful and inviting and I admire how much work they do on their own. It was a wonderful story. 7. What do you like most about Sioux Falls Woman Magazine? I love the diversity. The magazine does a great job of covering a lot of topics important to women and even men. And I have to also admire the quality – it’s a very nice looking publication and I can see why they fly off the racks. February/March 2022 | SiouxFallsWoman.net

Savvy Family: Baby, It’s Cold Outside Tips to avoid cabin fever By Jennifer Dumke

W

hen the temperature drops, boredom can rise. Many families struggle to stay entertained during the cold winter months. Avoid spending endless hours on electronics, impromptu shopping sprees, dining out and other activities that require spending your hard earned money with these alternative family friendly ideas. “Bored” Games Nothing beats a good old fashioned family game night. Depending on the age range of your family members and the number of players, there’s something for everybody. Get out snacks, play some fun tunes and you can easily create a night of laughter and bonding. If you are feeling creative and like trivia, step outside the gaming box by creating your own night of fun. Does your family have a special television sitcom or movie that’s frequented your television? Try testing your viewing knowledge by writing your own trivia questions. You can even test your family history knowledge by coming up with facts about family members. Who knows, you may even learn something new about your loved ones? And if you have a wide range of ages and need to appeal to every family member, take it down a notch with the details and maybe offer a few hints. For those not feeling creative - no worries - you can always try changing a favorite game by adding a new twist. After all, you can only play Candyland so many times.

12

SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2022

Don’t Get Puzzled If all this sounds like too much or you simply don’t have enough players, try putting together a puzzle. What’s great about puzzles is that they cater to all age ranges and you’d be surprised how time flies when getting into the groove. When finished, leave it assembled for a child’s room décor or take it apart and repurpose. Even though you may have already assembled it, you’d be surprised at how challenging puzzles can be despite the number of times they have been put together. Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner Kick up the competition and have fun with prizes. Let the winners relish their glory with unique, budget friendly rewards. Some suggestions would be choosing dinner for the night or getting out of doing a particular household chore. Feeling bold? Try adding crazy hats, opposing team logo wear and other fun ways to ramp up the competition. Offering these little incentives often times are more rewarding than picking a restaurant or going shopping. So next time you struggle with a house full of bored children and adults during the frigid winter months, get out the BOARD games and enjoy an old fashioned evening of fun on an old fashioned budget. n

A Year Filled with Love Your guide to planning a year of dates By Chellee Unruh

W

e often hear that to make a relationship last it is important to create date nights, put your phone on silent and engage in conversations that take you on a detour from the daily stressors of your routine. While this is important, there is one simple truth we must address: people change. Just because you love someone doesn’t mean that the relationship will stand the trials and tribulations of life. Being in a relationship with someone is something that you choose. To make your relationship last, you must make the active choice to remain present in that relationship. When we decide to love something, we need to take care of it even when it gets tough to do so. This is where dating your partner becomes important. Not only are you building intimacy and connection, dating your partner allows you to continue to get to know them as they change and grow as a person. Some believe that once you have reached the committed stage of life, the hard work is over. The reality is this is when the real work begins. If you don’t invest time in your spouse, you might miss the person they become. The thought of planning one date night can be a struggle for some but the thought of a year’s worth of dates seems like a daunting task. To alleviate the stress of planning your date nights, we have created a guide that will help you plan it out a year in advance. This would be a great gift idea for Valentine’s Day or just a special surprise for your spouse. TIPS TO BUILDING A YEAR’S WORTH OF DATES: Get an Early Start! If it is going to be a gift for a special occasion, you will want to give yourself at least a month or two to plan and pull everything together. Will you commit to a full year or a smaller version? Depending on what you have going on, it may not be possible to put together 12 dates. Maybe it is a financial issue or there are other known events happening that may affect your plans. If you are not ready to commit to a full year, it is perfectly acceptable to start planning 3 -6 months’ worth of dates. Decide what works best for you and then solidify your plan.

14

SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2022

Set a Budget: Be realistic about what you can afford and plan accordingly. Don’t pressure yourself to have to spend a lot of money if you can’t afford something extravagant. There are plenty of budget-friendly date options that are fun, interesting and exciting. If you do plan on spending some money, make sure that you budget for it ahead of time, like purchasing tickets to some event or making reservations. Write Out a Formal Plan: Create a planning sheet that lists the month, the date idea, the budget for that date, and what you need to do/acquire to make that date happen. Writing it all out will help you achieve what you are thinking of in your head into a formal plan on paper. Start with Big Ticket Events: Try (if you can) to plan one big event per year. This may be going to a Broadway play or the concert of your favorite artist, a sporting event, or a weekend getaway. We recommend starting with the big-ticket items because they require more planning and budgeting than the other dates on the agenda. Fill in the Spaces: Now that the big events are planned and out of the way, you can plan the less expensive simpler dates. If you are looking for some ideas, check out past issues of Sioux Falls Woman magazine or just google it! You will find a ton of great inexpensive or free date ideas! Plan for the Seasons: Date options vary with the seasons, so think of fun and new things to try that coordinate best with spring, summer fall, or winter. You could also plan dates associated with holidays - like dressing up for a couple’s costume contest for Halloween. When in Doubt...Repeat! Do you have something that you know you both will love? Then why not plan it for a couple of times a year? There is nothing wrong with a repeat date! Now that you are equipped to plan a year filled with love, enjoy yourself and each other! n

Do not take your phone into the bathroom And other important tips to stay healthy DID YOU KNOW? You can get germs from your cell phone. Touching surfaces like your phone, and then touching your face can give you germs that can cause: COVID-19, colds, flu, and other illnesses. Stay safe! Cheri Fast, Project Firstline program manager in South Dakota says: 1. Do not take your phone into the bathroom. Microscopic bathroom particles can land on your phone. If you need reading material, take something else. 2. Wipe your phone with an alcohol-based wipe. Disinfect your phone periodically – it’s important! Germs from hands can be transferred to your eyes, nose, and mouth via your phone. Check with your phone’s manufacturer on products that are safe for your phone. For more tips on staying healthy, check out the SD Project Firstline website at www.sdprojectfirstline.org. The latest CDC videos on Infection Prevention are posted there. Healthcare workers, attain CEU credit for doing the training! Details on the website. n

Wedding Band Trends What to know before you go shopping By Natalie Slieter

I

t’s a new year, and that means couples are getting engaged and preparing to get married. As couples approach their wedding days, choosing the right engagement ring and wedding bands are important tasks to get checked off their list. Abbi Swanson of Gunderson’s Jewelers in Sioux Falls says that about half of the time she will see brides come in alone or with a friend to see what they like for an engagement ring and create a wish list for their partner to refer to later, and the rest of the time Swanson sees the couple coming in to look together and making a date out of it. For engagement rings, a solitaire diamond set in a thin engagement ring is the most popular. Swanson says it’s a very delicate and feminine look. White gold is chosen most of the time, with yellow gold starting to trend, especially among younger brides. The most popular diamond shape is round but Swanson says she sees many brides choosing an oval diamond. Some trendier diamond cuts include radiant and emerald. Getting the engagement ring right is the most important step, then couples do not need to worry about choosing their wedding bands until a couple months before the wedding.

not very popular to buy an engagement ring and wedding band set anymore. Brides are alternating marquis bands and stone bands to create a unique look. Thin wedding bands, specifically single shared prong wedding bands, allow more light to hit the diamonds and give them the chance to really sparkle. Swanson says these bands are trending because they create a delicate, fun, and flirty look, which is opposite of the wedding band trends from a couple decades ago when bands had a heavier look to them. For men, it’s become popular to have three rings – the lifetime ring that they receive on the wedding day and wear for special occasions; the fashion ring which is a different style and can be a bit bolder; and the silicone ring which can be their everyday ring or worn while working.

“When it comes to wedding bands, there are no rules,” Swanson said.

Swanson recommends that every bride buy a wedding band, even if she doesn’t think she will wear it. It’s very possible that a particular wedding band could be unavailable if the bride decides she does want it a couple years later.

The major trends for wedding bands are not just having one wedding band, but stacking multiple, contrasting bands. Because of this, it’s

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING BLUE “Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.” We all know that rhyme and perhaps even enthusiastically followed it on our wedding days. Maybe it was a pair of shoes for “something blue” or a veil passed down for “something old.” If you’re preparing for your wedding and looking for a way to incorporate this rhyme through your jewelry, Justin Shatto of The Diamond Room has plenty of ideas to help you. Shatto is an owner and manager at The Diamond Room and has been with the business since 2013. He says most brides will participate in at least one other aspect of the rhyme – besides “something new” – for their wedding, which is usually “something old.” For “something old,” Shatto explains that many brides will wear an heirloom that has been handed down, such as a pearl necklace or a special ring. The Diamond Room has a goldsmith that can refurbish the jewelry and ensure it is ready to be worn for the wedding.

advertorial

For “something new,” there is a number of ways this can be done. Some brides may use the engagement ring or wedding band for this portion of the rhyme. But many grooms will buy their brides something special for them to wear on the big day. Gifts such as diamond earrings, bracelets, and necklaces are all beautiful ways to achieve “something new.” Shatto recommends grooms choose diamond studs or hoops since they likely don’t know what the wedding dress looks like. For “something borrowed,” this can be achieved through borrowing a special piece of jewelry from a family member or a friend. Like the “something old,” this can be brought to the goldsmith at The Diamond Room to ensure it is ready to be worn. For “something blue,” Shatto says sapphire rings and sapphire and diamond bracelets are popular ways to fulfill this. Some brides will even have a sapphire ring tied around the bouquet if it isn’t something they wish to wear all day.

Children, teens, and adults need to feel heard. At Embark Mental Health, we are licensed mental health therapists here for you, when you need us. Embark on your path for change, soar into growth, and find strength within a sense of peace.

Shatto’s piece of advice to couples approaching their wedding days is to have their rings and other jewelry cleaned about a week before the big day. There is so much happening the week of the wedding, so try to get it done the week before since the jewelry will be the focus of so many photos.

WOMEN RIDING O N E C O M PA N Y ’ S F O C U S O N A G R O W I N G M A R K E T O F F E M A L E R I D E R S . Women riding motorcycles is one trend that is starting to take off. (pun intended) Once a recreation dominated by men, more and more women are taking an interest in two-wheels. It’s not surprising, riding gives you a sense of freedom, empowerment and helps you find inner peace. It’s a feeling that women have been constantly searching for and it can be found by walking into Indian Motorcycle Sioux Falls. Vern Eide Motoplex, parent company of Indian Motorcycles Sioux Falls (IMSF) is a full-service dealership offering vehicles, parts, service, and financing. Motoplex carries brands including Indian Motorcycle, Polaris, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Sea-doo, Ski-Doo, and Roxor. They sell motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles, watercraft, scooters, apparel, and parts. Indian Motorcycle SF takes pride in creating an environment that is inviting and non-intimidating for women. How do they do it? By putting ladies at the front of many departments. Their service department is led by Service Manager Laken Jorgensen and Assistant Service Manager Natalie Talcott. “Customers come in with their “shields up” to service departments”, says Tom Borchard Marketing Manager. “It can be intimidating, and even more so for our female customers. I am very grateful for this department being led by women for our customers to come in and work with.”

In the finance department, customers can depend on Jaime Madsen, Finance Manager to handle all of the paperwork and line up the financing and extended warranties for customers. Female consumers are often concerned about being taken advantage of when buying a motor vehicle. Jaime calms those fears by building trust and offering friendly detail-oriented customer service. Jaime sees big growth coming in the motorcycle industry now that more women are riding. “As more women have shown interest in this industry, the opportunities for them have increased. We see more and more women riders. My opinion is that by not taking female customers seriously, we are missing out on half the worlds potential market which is a simple mistake if you want to grow the business,” says Jaime. “I believe that the best way to attract female customers is to give them equal respect.” Women are not only interested in the freedom of riding, they are also interested in the fashion and safety that comes with it. Nicole and her team aren’t just helping our customers pick out “cute tops,” we are helping them get the lifesaving gear they need. They ensure that customers of Indian Motorcycles are protected from danger, just as much as making sure they look good on their bikes. “I love working in my department because I get to pick and choose the products that come into our store for both men and women. More and more

women are getting into the motorsports industry,” Nicole Wolf, apparel manager shares, “Everyone has their own style and comfort and I like to keep a variety of product throughout the store to fit everyone’s wants, needs, and budget.” What sets Indian Motorcycles apart is the culture. Natalie shares. “Here at IMSF, we have a different culture than our competitors. As a female consumer going into competitor dealerships, I am used to being ignored and them speaking to my husband instead. That’s just not how it is here. We treat everyone with trust and respect regardless of gender.” As more women have shown interest in this industry, the opportunities for them have increased. Indian Motorcycle has incorporated aspects of its events that are appealing to women and plan to start offering classes to empower more women to embrace their dream of becoming a rider. If you are ready to feel true woman empowerment drive out to Indian Motorcycle today and ride out on your dream adventure. Indian Motorcycle is located off I -29 Interstate Exit# 83 on Northview Ave.

Maximalist Makeup By Jessalyn Holsing

M

inimalist makeup, also known as “skinimalist” has been trending for the past couple years with a natural, almost makeup-free look. With our major focus on skincare regimes we dove in and tried to determine which makeup trends were bogus and which ones were keepers. Now that we’ve figured out the precise ways to keep our skin clean and clear (moisturizers and toners being the capstones of peak skincare), we can dive back into full-on faces of bold and beautiful makeup looks. Welcome to “Maximalism.” The route to a maximalist makeup look are three key features: eyes, cheeks, and lips. Naturally, we want lovely brows and long eyelashes to complement our look; however, by maximizing the features listed we will truly speak “maximalist” out loud. Starting off with a brightn-bold eyeshadow—you won’t need much eyeliner if you use black mascara to emphasize the lashes and fill in the blanks. A vibrant color on the lid extending from the inner eye out to the reaches of the outer tip of the brow will absolutely draw attention. Try a bright pink, red, yellow, or even green if you want to go for the gusto. Go wild with a fiery ombre of reds and oranges or an icy blue-to-white transition, there’s really no holding back. Next, we want to focus on the cheeks: whether you choose a bright pink blush or a flashy colored highlighter doesn’t matter as long as your beautiful cheeks are emphasized dramatically. Finally, the lips: We are going to go beyond striking reds and into hot pinks, glitter, or even a bold and beautiful neutral to brown shade, with something glossy and shiny to bring attention to the plush shape of your lips. Maximalism with makeup is all about grabbing attention and flashing your personal flair with the colors you choose for your best and boldest features. Pop those eyes, flash those lips, make your cheeks rosy and full, and you’re sure to shout “glam” with maximalist drama wherever you go! n

One Kitchen: Three Different Ways Story & photos by Lisa Marie Blair

T

here are infinite ways to add charm and personality to your kitchen. Start by asking yourself these questions. What functional pieces serve your daily needs? What interests you and pleases your eye? We spend a lot of time in our kitchens, so it makes sense to enjoy the space we are in. Reach into what you have in your cupboards and pantry, and start getting creative. You can take your kitchen and spice it up considerably by just switching and swapping a few items. Once you decide on the kind of theme you want in your kitchen, start by creating a vignette to showcase your style. Begin with a focal point, and then layer in all the other pieces. Different textures will add interest and depth to your kitchen. Scandinavian, Traditional and Farmhouse are three very different styles featured here that dramatically change the feel in this small kitchen. An art enthusiast can display smaller pieces of work against the backsplash. Layering is always a great idea and artwork always looks lovely when paired with a coordinating piece. Displaying other kitchen wares like a spoon rest, butter dish, or pitcher will be both functional and beautiful. The list really is endless and provides a great way to showcase your favorite kitchen necessities and accessories.

A culinary aficionado should display the items they love and use the most. Multiple wood cutting boards leaning against the backsplash will be conveniently located and ready to use. Cookbooks, cake stands, and a utensil holder full of task tools can be both pretty and practical. Flour and sugar canisters need not be hidden away as they can also be attractively displayed. A classy ring holder next to the sink can save you the ordeal of having your jewelry go down the drain. A coffee lover will want everything they need to be readily accessible to feed their love for caffeine quickly. This means different things to different people, but the range is wide and can be everything from a simple Chemex pour-over, to a barista style espresso machine. A tray works wonders for holding essentials like coffee filters, stir sticks, and to-go cups neatly in one location. No reason to hide those coffee grounds/ beans. Display them in clear glass canisters on your countertop. The kitchen is often neglected when it comes to decorating because it is viewed as a space to be practical versus stylish. Your kitchen doesn’t have to be just a place where you prep, cook, and serve meals. Your kitchen, styled to suit your personality, is the kitchen you’ll want to be in. n February/March 2022 | SiouxFallsWoman.net

MODERN Classic

By Jennifer Dumke Photos by Next Door Photos

I

t’s often said to never judge a book by its cover. As, in the case of this central city beauty, it took vision and an eye for design to create the perfect dream home. The homeowners have completely remodeled this spectacular 5-bedroom, 3 full bath ranch walk-out home, and nearly two years later, this one-of-a-kind classic has been transformed into a modern haven with subtle hints of rustic elements. “I remember being contacted that this home was on the market so I went ahead and scheduled a tour while my husband was at work,” the homeowner adds. With a few new construction projects under her belt, her husband had full confidence in her choices yet still rushed to the home to take a preview. “It had good bones and is located on the golf course so the home has privacy yet the convenience of inner-city living.” Only a few walls needed to be removed but it had great windows and a layout that fit our lifestyle and love for entertaining large groups.” Endless rich wood floors and neutral paint colors extend throughout the home. The entryway with an arch-top window allows light to flood in and showcase the unique linear railing leading to the downstairs and a rustic shiplap panel that graces the wall without drawing too much attention. For consistency, they selected a family of unique wood accented chandeliers in various sizes for the perfect blend of modern meets rustic. Once inside, you’ll take notice of the various seating options, something high on the list of must-haves for these homeowners. “I’d seen these dining table style “islands” in magazines when researching up and coming trends and immediately fell in love,” she adds. With a contrasting dark wood base that allows for ample storage, the top is a warm granite that is illuminated by an elongated square chandelier and open windows. “We did add an extra side window and oversized sliding glass doors that lead to the patio.” A subtle exterior overhang is perfect for light control so they can leave all windows facing the golf course completely open

“We’ll Take Care Of You.” without worrying about privacy. Added to this casual passthrough dining space is a custom wall of white cabinets with tile accents which perfectly house a flat screen television, their selection of wine, and a dedicated coffee bar. Knowing groups often congregate in the kitchen, an additional central island with a black base and granite top can be used to display food and wine rather than having to take up space for seating. Dual square pendants and recessed lighting are perfect for evening gatherings. Meanwhile, oversized windows make the space glow during daylight, showcasing the crisp white cabinets and grey subway tile backsplash. “The faucet is unique because there are two of them. The main one remains traditional but there’s a side faucet for immediate hot or cold water.” Another feature that comes in handy when entertaining. Effortlessly flowing into the rest of the main floor open concept is another casual dining area. This quaint space includes a neutral toned traditional dining room table and chairs. A soft blue rug begins the introduction of perfectly selected accent colors. The great room defines comfort and cozy without missing a beat on beauty and design. Matching slate blue sofas with butter yellow throw pillows add subtle color, and a painting above the fireplace adds a touch of nostalgia. “This was actually painted by our daughter,” adds the homeowners. “It’s an image of the view from the back of our home.” The artistic creation sits on a wood mantle while resting on coordinating shiplap above a dry stacked stone fireplace. “When we entertain it often gets warm in the home yet we still like to enjoy the beauty of our gas fireplace so we chose one where we can have the option for a damper that opens and closes to control heat regardless of the flame.” Another personal feature of the home is a black lacquer grand that quietly rests in the corner of the space. “We both play piano.” And for a touch of texture, the homeowners opted for two printed side chairs.

Despite their love for entertaining, this home isn’t all play and no work. Dual pocket doors can easily be opened and closed for access to the office, which doubles as a legal bedroom. Crisp white shutters control light and privacy. Meanwhile, a rustic wall of built-in cabinets and shelves are perfect for displaying family heirlooms and collectables with additional storage below. A simple wood desk completes the space. Traditional double doors lead to the master bedroom where a warm and soft white fabric tufted headboard and soft neutral tone bedding invite comfort. A bright golden oriental rug anchors the space and introduces new colors to the muted space. Going back to bright, with hints of colorful interest, the master bathroom features neutral heated tile floors and crisp white granite countertops. Dual sinks flank a central storage cabinet while clean and crisp white shutters are perfect for both form and function. But the real amenity of this master bath is the walk-in shower with rain shower head and unique pebble floor and accent strip. Another unique addition is a stacked washer and dryer that makes doing chores a little bit easier. Whether entertaining, hosting intimate family gatherings with their four adult children or having a large get-together, the fully custom mud room features simple lines and neutral tones. Custom lockers with a built-in bench are perfect for hanging clothes or bulky outerwear with ease. The lower level is simplistic yet comforting with a dedicated game area that includes a retro pin ball machine and pool table that also serves up a competitive game of ping-pong. A large dark grey sectional and coordinating rug are an invitation to curl up for movie night. An elongated glass tile fireplace and flat screen television are flanked by white floating shelves and minimal accessories. For added convenience, large sliding doors lead to the patio. Three additional bedrooms are perfect for visiting family and guests while the lower-level full bath is sheik with grey custom cabinets, white countertops and a large silver framed mirror. An additional spacious room houses the main washer and dryer and serves as the perfect fitness area. Even though these homeowners may be parting ways with this fully remodeled gem, they have both fully enjoyed designing and decorating this stunning fivebedroom beauty. So, what’s the best part of this home? Location, location, location! The openness of the backyard overlooking Prairie Green golf course, the many wild life strolling by, and the sunsets are the best Sioux Falls can offer! n

DIY Watercolor Coaster Story & photos by Emily Olson The finished effects of these DIY watercolor coasters are a little bit of tie-dye, marble and granite all mixed into one! The beautiful end result is complex, but the process is simple. They are inexpensive to make, so it is easy to mass produce them for gifts in the recipients’ favorite colors. DIRECTIONS *Please use caution when burning the tiles. The flame is small and will extinguish very quickly once all of the alcohol has burned. The safest option is to move outdoors on a non-flammable surface like concrete for the processes using fire. Always keep the alcohol container in a separate area and never add more alcohol onto the fire.

SUPPLIES • 4 inch white porcelain tiles with straight edges • Sharpie markers • metallic leaf paint • paintbrush • polycrylic sealant spray

• cork adhesive backing • 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol • fine mist spray bottle • butane lighter • metal pan lined with foil

5. Place the tile back on the baking sheet and move the bottle with alcohol far away from the area. To be safe, use the most caution and move the project to a non-flammable space outdoors. 6. Light the alcohol on the top of tile on fire. As the flame moves across the tile, it will leave a marbled effect.

1. Draw thick scribble sections on the tile with colors that will blend well together when mixed.

7. Once the fire burns out completely, add a spray or two of alcohol onto the marbled tile to create speckling. Move the spray bottle away from the area again and burn the tile to set the granite effect.

2. Place the tile on a metal baking pan lined with foil.

8. Paint the tile edges of the tile with metallic leaf paint.

3. Using a fine mist spray bottle filled with alcohol, spray the tile several times so that it is saturated and the Sharpie ink begins to bleed.

9. Seal the tiles with 2-3 coats of polycrylic spray, allowing the tiles to dry completely between coats.

4. Holding the tile, swirl it to create a tie-dye, blended effect.

44

SiouxFallsWoman.net | February/March 2022

10. Let the tile cure overnight. 11. Attach adhesive cork backing to the underside of the tile before use as a coaster. n

BEAT THE WINTER BLUES! Escape the Deep Freeze for Relaxing, Soothing and Healing Heat at 3 Degrees Infrared Sauna Studio Winter has taken over and with nothing but months of cold in the forecast, there’s never been a better time to visit 3 Degrees Infrared Sauna Studio. And if you’re susceptible to Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD, this can be a real lifesaver. SAD can cause depression or make you moody and listless due to a lack of light. The light therapy from a 3 Degrees infrared sauna can help to combat that as well as help to lift your spirits with a relaxing and rejuvenating 40 minute session. And it doesn’t just stop at potentially helping SAD. According to Brent A. Bauer, M.D. at mayoclinic.org, “Several studies have looked at using infrared saunas in the treatment of chronic health problems, such as high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, headache, type 2 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, and found some evidence of benefit.” Set up to accommodate both individuals and couples, members enjoy pre-sauna vibration machines that assist in flushing toxins as well as cooling eucalyptus infused towels. Unlike traditional steam saunas, infrared saunas

provide a dry heat that doesn’t feel as hot and doesn’t cause difficulty breathing. But perhaps the largest difference is that infrared light actually penetrates human tissue up to two inches and offers therapeutic benefits because of its ability to be absorbed by your body. It safely raises core body temperatures by 3 degrees during each 40-minute session! This results in a healthy, deep and detoxifying sweat similar to a fat torching workout. According to 3 Degrees client and enthusiast Toni, “My first time at 3 Degrees was January 16, 2020. I posted on FB that afternoon that it was life changing. I have tried to go twice a week since then and it is absolutely renewed and revived me. I could go on and on. I tell everyone about it and want everyone to TRY IT! My benefits have included renewal in energy, mood boost, great increase in mobility (I have rheumatoid arthritis), mental clarity, and better sleep. The staff is friendly and helpful. I really appreciate the flexibility in membership/non-membership options. The owners are good local people. I challenge everyone to do a weekly pass to give it a well-educated try.”

What Moms Need to Know About the Postpartum Period By Avera

T

he blessing of a newborn baby is reason to celebrate, but some new moms may not realize the physical conditions that can accompany childbirth.

Even in a normal delivery, a woman’s body experiences a certain degree of trauma, which can lead to a number of treatable postpartum conditions: • Urinary issues and infection • Painful vaginal tears and injuries • Breast infection (mastitis) as well as other breastfeeding difficulties “One main idea all moms-to-be should realize is that their pregnancy and birth is unique – it’s not going to be like your best friend’s, your mom’s or your aunt’s delivery,” said Jacob Thomas, MD, Avera Medical Group OB/GYN specialist. “If troublesome symptoms occur, don’t hesitate to contact your provider. You don’t have to wait until your follow-up appointment.” One example is urinary tract infection happens in an estimated 2 to 4% of all deliveries. This can leave you with symptoms such as painful urination, cloudy or foul smelling urine, or difficulty emptying your bladder and can be quickly resolved with antibiotics. “It’s important to recognize and report symptoms like this right 50

away, so we can get you on track to feeling better sooner than later,” Thomas said. UNDERSTANDING THE FOURTH TRIMESTER The months after your child’s birth, sometimes called the fourth trimester, are often spent getting to know your baby, but afterbirth care for moms is important. While the term “postpartum” often focuses on behavioral health issues related to depression and anxiety, pregnant women and new moms should not overlook the physical realities of this time after delivery. “Big changes come to a woman’s body when she gives birth, and postpartum wellness should be a big part of the care she receives,” said Avera Medical Group Urogynecologist Matthew Barker, MD. “If there are injuries or complications, we need to identify and treat them early, so they can get back to normal in a timely manner. Some of these problems show up right away, and others do not.” New moms who deliver by C-section usually have follow-up appointments about two weeks after delivery. That timeline is the same for patients who have more severe tears during vaginal births. Women who experienced a vaginal delivery without complications often see their OB provider about six weeks after the baby is born.

But pain or other symptoms can be ongoing – even after these early follow-up appointments.

Vroom, Vroom!

SPECIALIZED HELP FOR POSTPARTUM SYMPTOMS Postpartum trauma should be addressed within the first few weeks after delivery. One in 10 women experience pelvic floor symptoms in the first six months after pregnancy and delivery. A specialized Postpartum Wellness Program at Avera Medical Group Urogynecology diagnoses and treats ongoing pelvic floor disorders and helps women prevent more serious symptoms. THIS CLINIC PROVIDES CARE FOR SYMPTOMS INCLUDING: • Wound breakdown • Accidental loss of gas and stool • Urinary incontinence • Third- and fourth-degree obstetrical tears • Obstetrical fistulas • Postpartum urinary retention • Pain with intercourse • Pelvic pain Evaluation through the Postpartum Wellness Program provides access to a variety of specialists including a fellowship-trained urogynecologist, colorectal surgeon, pelvic floor physical therapists, wound care specialists, women’s health psychologist, and sexual therapist.

“We will assess healing and the function of various systems in that part of a patient’s body, and it could include CT or MRI imaging if needed,” said Barker. Treatments may include physical therapy, dietary recommendations, medications, specialized wound care or surgical intervention. Postpartum Care and Breastfeeding Educating moms on the basics of latching on and positioning can help them when it comes to breastfeeding their newborns. Among breastfeeding complications are swelling, redness or a breast infection, known as mastitis. “An important point is that moms keep feeding with the affected breast, as that can actually help to reduce these conditions,” said Thomas. Avera has lactation program specialists who can assist moms with breastfeeding concerns. Thomas stressed that good communication with your provider up to – and past – delivery will help you get answers quickly. If you are having any issues, call your OB provider or your primary care provider to discuss any questions you have. Learn more at Avera.org/birthing. n

Midwest ENT & ALLERGY Caring Campaigns Give Back to the Community “Let’s make it a challenge” By Virginia Olson | Photos courtesy of Midwest ENT & Allergy

T

his is a heartwarming story of a couple businesses that focus on charities that are near and dear to their hearts and how they do their best to help.

The concept of giving back has always been important to the physicians and staff at Midwest ENT & Allergy and for the last five years, “giving back” has included a major toy drive at Christmas for the Banquet and a blood drive in the summer for the Sioux Falls Community Blood Bank. Midwest ENT & Allergy was looking for a way to give back to the awesome community of Sioux Falls. They had a conversation with their next-door neighbor, Sioux Falls Family Vision, who was also looking for a way to give back. So the two businesses decided to come together to serve the community in a fun and creative way. Serving children is an important entity for Midwest ENT & Allergy and Sioux Falls Family Vision, so they decided to host a major toy drive to benefit The Banquet in Sioux Falls and challenge other businesses in the community to help as well. From there, the #EyesEarsToyChallenge was born and was soon in full swing.

“Facebook and social media were used to challenge other businesses to donate, similar to the ALS Water Bucket facebook challenge,” says Lisa Bendt, Midwest ENT & Allergy Practice Administrator. The “challenge” garnered interest from other businesses. Lots of interest. “We would issue a challenge to a Sioux Falls business on facebook and they could bring their toys to us, post it with a photo on facebook, and then challenge another business to do the same. It was a fun way to work together with so many businesses,” Bendt says. Boxes upon boxes of toys were collected, and then given out at The Banquet by the staff and physicians of the two clinics the week of Christmas. They often had enough toys left over to bring to other local SF charities that serve children as well. “The idea was to get as many toys as possible to kids in need,” says Dr. Peter Kasznica. “Our thought was ‘we can do this together.’ Along with SF Family Vision, Midwest ENT & Allergy created this giant toy drive collecting dolls, books, teddy bears, etc and then delivering them to The Banquet. This year marked their 5th annual Eyes & Ears Toy Challenge. It has evolved from a challenge of businesses to including anyone who wants to donate. Individuals, businesses, anyone who wants to bless the children is welcome to join them. “The kids are always so happy to get a toy and the parents are so grateful. For some children, it is the only toy they receive for Christmas,” Bendt says. “It is a meaningful event for all of us at Midwest ENT & Allergy that perfectly matches our mission of serving children and adults.” The idea of the toy challenge was inspired by another successful event they had teamed up with Sioux Falls Family Vision on. A huge community blood drive. “We also have a yearly blood drive competition with SF Family Vision. In August, the SF Community Blood Bank Blood-Mobiles come to our parking lot. And because it is so visible to traffic on 57th Street, more donors show up. Most of the staff at the two clinics donate as well. “There were 65 total units collected last year alone, which helped 195 local patients and their families. This was especially helpful during covid as blood supplies have been low,” Says Bendt. For the physicians and staff at Midwest ENT & Allergy, giving back is very important. “For us it means reaching out to the community, providing help where it is needed, and finding creative ways to make it all possible,” says Dr. Kasznica (or Dr. K, as his patients call him). “We feel good when we can help. The Sioux Falls community has been so good to us and this is our way of giving back.” If you would like to be involved in the next blood drive or toy challenge from the helpful gang along 57th street, follow their facebook pages for frequent event updates! n

Nurse Navigators Offer Education, Compassion in Cancer Care By Sanford Health

C

ancer is an intimidating diagnosis. In the tangle of appointments, medications and even operations, patients can easily feel overwhelmed and lost.

That’s why Sanford Health has nurse navigators—a group of registered nurses dedicated to the coordination of care throughout a cancer patient’s journey. Nurse navigators are at the center of the care process, guiding patients and their families through the many challenges of cancer treatment. “A navigator takes patients by the hand and leads them through their cancer journey,” said Laurie Kruse, a nursing ambulatory manager at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls. “They are there at pivotal points, from first to last visit.” Nurse navigators are an essential piece of the team approach to cancer care at Sanford Health. They’re present at many appointments as another set of ears for the patient. They translate any confusing disease or treatment information into simple terms, coordinate appointments and connect patients to supportive resources—all so patients can focus on healing. Navigators specialize in order to provide quality care across the cancer spectrum. Specializations in the Sioux Falls region include breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, genomics and oncofertility, gynecologic cancer, head and neck cancer, lung cancer, genitourinary cancer, hematology and survivorship. Navigators in the Fargo region cover a few additional types of tumors. Because every cancer is different, every patient has unique needs.

DRUG-INDUCED NUTRIENT DEPLETION Drug-induced nutrient depletion occurs when the medications we take for our various health issues block the absorption, storage, metabolism, or synthesis of essential nutrients in the body. When nutrients are blocked or depleted over time, health problems can develop secondary to those depletions. Many of the most popular medications prescribed today can create these drug-induced nutrient depletions. What can be done about this problem? Our pharmacists here at Pharmacy Specialties & Clinic are specially trained to recommend supplements that will help offset drug-induced depletions and their resultant health problems. It is important that you share with your pharmacist all of the medications you are taking – both prescription and over-the-counter. A common example is the depletion of Coenzyme Q-10 with usage of cholesterol lowering drugs, beta-blockers, anti-hypertensives, anti-diabetic drugs or female hormones.

“Navigators are the information hubs for their patients,” Kruse said. “They gain an intimate understanding of what each patient needs based on his or her diagnosis.” Most crucially, nurse navigators represent the best interests of their patients in ongoing communication with other members of the care team. When experts from all corners of cancer care come together to present and discuss patient cases in weekly multidisciplinary cancer conferences, nurse navigators play a key role. “Navigators are the connective tissue of the care team,” Kruse said. “They help coordinate the weekly conferences.” As expert educators, communicators and coordinators, nurse navigators improve the entire process of cancer treatment. They’re a touchpoint for cancer patients and their caregivers, always working to ensure that healing is the patient’s main focus. As soon as a patient hears “cancer,” a nurse navigator is there to help ease the burden with compassion and expertise. They prove that, at Sanford Health, no one faces cancer alone. n

SUPPORTING & CELEBRATING WOMEN WARRIORS Sioux Falls SD DAV Chapter Sponsors Stand Up for Women Veterans Wellness Retreat When you think of a Veteran, you might envision a man who has served his country. But for nearly 19% of current forces, women are proudly serving shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts. And for many women Veterans, the lack of connection and perception of their role has unfortunately been frequently overlooked. South Dakota Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Arthur H. Muchow Chapter Number one in Sioux Falls not only recognizes women who have served, they are proud to have several of these strong women warriors serving on its Board of Directors and in leadership roles. Senior Vice Commander Kim Hubers, Junior Vice Commander Jill Baker, and former Commander Helen Parr are taking the lead on the Chapter’s first-ever Stand Up for Women Veterans Wellness Retreat in Sioux Falls. Having all served in different times and positions, they bring a unique perspective to the DAV as well as to the event. According to lead organizer Jill, “Our Mission Statement really says it all, ‘Strengthening leadership, power, and voices of women who

have Served in the United States Armed Forces through peer support and connection to resources’. It’s a fact that women are under-represented in every service organization because there are so few females actively participating. The more women we can get involved the more we can do for women Veterans together.” The event is free for all women who have Served or are currently Serving in the military. Centered on health and wellness, the Keynote Speaker is former Marine Lori Walsh, who currently hosts and acts as senior producer of In the Moment, SDPB’s news and culture radio broadcast. In addition, there are wellness-focused breakout sessions, a resource fair, and a light breakfast and lunch. Free childcare will be available for up to 40 children ages 2-10 years of age. Mothers can “wear their babies” at all events, and special mother/child breakout sessions will be available for children of all ages. Kim shares, “Many women in the service feel that they need to be ‘one of the guys’ but we’re not guys. So our experiences are different because we’re different. We want other women Veterans to know that we can still share our voice and have a presence at

the table with organizations like the DAV. We aren’t invisible and can contribute to things that are important for Veterans.”

Improving the Quality of Life Extraordinary Care. Every Patient. Every Time.

The SD DAV is a nonprofit charity that provides a lifetime of support for Veterans of all generations and their families, helping more than 1 million Veterans in positive, lifechanging ways each year. Annually, the organization provides more than 240,000 rides to Veterans attending medical appointments and assists veterans with well over 160,000 benefit claims. In 2020, DAV helped Veterans receive more than $23 billion in earned benefits. DAV’s services are offered at no cost to all generations of Veterans, their families and survivors. Helen notes, “We want to empower women Veterans to sit with us at the table. We want you here now and we are trying to pave the way and open the front door for you.” For more information on how to join the SD DAV contact admin@davsd.org.

Living the American

Dream Araceli Hernandez has made her dreams come true through hard work and love By Margaret Pennock Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography Makeup by American Beauty SD | Hair by Tonasha

A

s a little girl growing up in an apartment in Los Angeles, Araceli had big dreams to someday own her own house. Today, she and her husband Ignacio have built themselves a small real estate empire spanning from California to Iowa. A real life ‘Flip or Flop’ success story, Araceli has found her place in the real estate investment world that all started in Sioux Falls. Born in Mexico, her widowed mother moved her family to Los Angeles to support her family. Araceli shares, “My mother was a very brave and courageous women when she decided to move our family which included five kids by herself when father passed away when I was three. She’s my hero to this day.” She recalls the challenges of moving back to Mexico at 10, returning to California when she was 12. “When we moved back to Mexico it was a whole new experience for me. In the Mexican village where we lived we didn’t have necessities like modern plumbing and bathrooms.” She continues, “It was hard at the beginning because I was used to living with privileges such as transportation, education and running water. I’m grateful that my mom made the decision to move and that she moved us back to see the difference. We are more than blessed to be part of this country.” At just 21 years old, Araceli and her husband Ignacio along with their youngest son Alex were living in northern California when her brother encouraged her to join him in Sioux Falls. “My brother followed his girlfriend home to Sioux Falls because she missed her family and wanted to return to them. When he got here he saw a lot of opportunities for everyone because of the low unemployment plus housing was affordable so I thought, ‘Why not?’”

Alex, Miranda, Jimena, Ignacio and Araceli

After talking Ignacio into committing to move for six months, they made the trek across the country to South Dakota. Leaving the balmy California weather to experience one of South Dakota’s nastiest winters on record in November of 1996 was a shock. “After two months I wanted to move back home but Ignacio reminded me that we needed to give it six months,” Araceli laughs.

As a young, inexperienced and fearless couple, Araceli and Ignacio jumped into the real estate market without a backward glance. She shares, “We had nothing to lose but everything to gain. Our first real estate investment was a property we purchased for $2,500 that had to be moved, without a plan as to where to move it to. We ended up finding a lot for $30,000 and Ignacio offered the owner $18,000, which is all we had in savings. The owner asked why that amount and we said it was what we had and he sold it to us.” She laughs, “With that we made money but we gained so much experience. We were young and willing to risk it.” Twenty-seven years later, the Hernandez’s have made a place and a home for themselves in Sioux Falls and have given their son Alex siblings Jimena and Miranda. In addition to owning rental properties in California, Texas, South Dakota and Iowa they also flip executive level homes. On top of this both work in financial services with Araceli specializing as a Mortgage Loan Officer with Reliabank. “I started as a consumer services rep and now I’m a loan officer. Having this background experience helps me to guide my clients better and I can help them get to where they want to be to qualify for the home of their dreams.” In addition to working and investing, Araceli is committed to helping her community through volunteering. She is a member of the Cinco De Mayo Committee and Caminando Juntos, an organization and ministry that helps the Latino community by welcoming new immigrants and helping them to achieve success in Sioux Falls. “I want to help the Hispanic community, and being a good citizen means helping others accomplish what they have dreamed of.” Having exceeded her goals more than she could have hoped or dreamed, Araceli has made new ones. “I want to start building homes, that’s my next step as a developer. I think that would be a neat, new experience and what I have in mind. My husband and I are a really good team with good ideas and I’m hoping that my kids will want to work for me. We talk about the industry with them and we hope they want to work hard to be a part of this with us.” n
