Frugal Family Fun Fitness Frenzy!

ummertime fun, it’s something most families look forward to every year. But sometimes the harsh temps and lure of technology, online games and social media can leave families holed up in air conditioned houses; often times lacking physical activity. Needless to say, after a few months, families are ready to get back to a routine. Why not add fitness to the agenda? The autumn season is a great time to start going on family hikes, simple walks around the block and even getting creative by combining simple outdoor tasks such as raking leaves or winterizing plants and shrubs as exercise.

GREEN THEORY – Confused with all the new exercise terms?

Remember that you don’t need a gym membership, pass to a state park or expensive hiking and biking gear to simply get outside and walk. Whether a morning person or evening, gather your posse and simply take a walk around your own neighborhood. It’s simple, inexpensive and requires very little planning. If you have younger children, make your walks fun by playing games or finding a favorite leaf while on the excursion. You will be surprised at how much family bonding can occur on a simple, affordable walk. And the best part is, you’re getting your heart rate up at the same time.

HIKING, BIKING AND MORE – Although most think of summer when it comes to family trips to state parks or local tourist destinations, fall is also a great time to take advantage of the beauty of the season while getting in shape before the snow flies. Same-day trips to area parks with hiking trails are a great way to bond as a family, taking in the beauty while avoiding the hot temperatures and bugs. Because family hikes are casual and self-led, they are suitable for any age. If you want to kick things up a notch, an energetic bike ride can also be a great way to take in fresh, crisp air and really get the heart pumping.

Just be sure to make necessary adjustments for the different ages and always be prepared with proper safety equipment and hydration if going on longer rides. You can even go one step further and make a difference while getting in shape by registering for a local race.

There’s typically a large number of walks and runs scheduled in the fall and often times the proceeds benefit local charities.

FITNESS WITH A PURPOSE – Almost everyone has some type of fall maintenance that needs to be done. From basic raking to blowing out gutters, you would be surprised at how many calories one can burn by doing these tasks. For families with younger children, it’s a great time for them to jump in the leaf piles while others may find prepping flower beds and bringing in pots and other summer items more beneficial. One thing is for sure, there definitely is a task for everybody. And for those who don’t need to do outdoor maintenance, either offer to help a family member or check around to see if anybody needs help. Not only are you showing your children how to be good Samaritans, it can also be quite the workout!

Setting Students Up for Success

elieve it or not, kids have been back in school for a couple of months. With parent-teacher conferences coming up soon, Sylvan Learning Center Director Michelle McGuckin says now is the perfect time to assess how well your child is doing in their classes.

McGuckin suggests you first ask your child some questions to gauge where they are at – how are they feeling about school? Do they feel they can do the schoolwork?

When they’re at school, do they feel like they’re learning? If your child mentions being unable to pay attention or feels like they’re falling behind where their classmates are at, reach out to your child’s teacher to get their opinion.

If your child's teacher is concerned about their progress, McGuckin advises having your child complete an assessment at Sylvan Learning Center in Sioux Falls.

Once the results are in and it is determined that tutoring may be the best route, Sylvan can then contact your child’s teacher, with your permission.

“Sylvan is able to work with the teacher on the areas we deem would benefit that student,” McGuckin said. “We can talk to the teacher about what we noticed in our assessment and what they’re noticing in the classroom. It’s a partnership.”

McGuckin notes that with the pandemic over the last year and a half, it’s possible some skills may not have been mastered in a previous grade, which can cause the student some difficulty in understanding new concepts in their current grade.

Unfortunately, teachers don’t always have the time to go back and teach old concepts. That’s where McGuckin emphasizes that partnerships between Sylvan and teachers are crucial.

“We can work together to benefit the students,” McGuckin said.

Sylvan will put together an individualized plan best suited for your child and what subjects they need to focus on to catch up. Sylvan is flexible with scheduling to accommodate students and their busy schedules. For most students, McGuckin shares that it’s recommended they complete four hours of tutoring per week to ensure they get enough exposure to the material.

Ultimately, McGuckin explains that before students complete their tutoring program, Sylvan wants to see them mastering skills above their grade level and gaining confidence to progress and excel in school.

“The goal is to move them through the program, build them up, and then see them supported in the classroom,” McGuckin said.

OLLI in South Dakota Learning for the Love of It

T

hat back-to-school feeling isn’t just for the young – it’s also for the young of heart. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of South Dakota brings all the fun of collegelevel learning to Sioux Falls, Brookings and Vermillion, but there are no tests, no grades and no all-night studying.

“OLLI is a lifelong learner’s dream,” Mary Enright, OLLI member, said. “Even when you’re older, you can still get that fall feeling like you should be packing up the car and heading to college. OLLI fills that learning need I still have. I get to take classes, but either at the campus or at home on Zoom.”

OLLI members join to learn about history, current events, health, science, technology, art, travel and literature. Mary said among her favorite classes was “a series of classes on the Old Testament brought it to life for me, a cryptocurrency course explained what it is and how it works and taught me that I probably don’t want to get involved with it, and a class on geocaching has now become a hobby that I do nearly every day wherever I go. I’ve found geocaches in 18 states and 7 foreign countries.”

OLLI in South Dakota is part of a nation-wide group of 125 OLLI organizations, all affiliated with a university. It started in 2007 in

South Dakota with a handful of classes, aimed at people over 50 years old, and grew to close to 1,000 members. Classes are taught by professors, scientists and experts in their field. They offer over 150 classes in spring and fall semesters.

Shirley Halleen was one of the founding members. “It was the people who really got it going,” she said. She attended service club meetings, spoke to groups and told people about what OLLI could offer them. “I always said ‘yes, we are aging, but that doesn’t mean we need to stop. You can keep learning.’”

Associate Professor, Tim Schorn at USD was among the first to teach for OLLI. “I really enjoy interacting with the members of OLLI. Since we’ve all been around a bit longer than my students at USD, we remember many of the same events and people from our lifetime which gives context to what I talk about. OLLI participants are eager to learn more,” he said. “They attend because it’s something they really want to do. That means they are more willing to interact. I love their questions because they make me think and they give me the opportunity to explore more topics or dig deeper.”

s the warm summer fades into the fall you may feel like the best of times are in the rearview mirror for the next couple of months. Let us reassure you that patio bars and lakeside dates are not the secret ingredients to finding a relationship. The best time to fall in love is the fall. The cooler months aren’t just made for sweaters and scarves, science supports that autumn creates the right mood for falling in love.

As the days become shorter in the fall, the melatonin levels in your brain increase making you feel lethargic and desiring the warm snuggly comforts of home, especially when you have someone to share the blanket with. According to experts at Match.com, testosterone levels also increase in November, so the environment for falling in love scientifically favors the autumn months.

Not convinced yet? Here are some of the reasons why fall is the ideal season for finding love or nurturing your relationship if you have already found that special someone.

A

utumn brings a particular aesthetic to mind, with glorious gold, warm orange, deep burgundy, and cozy brown hues so prevalent each year surrounding this season, it’s easy to fall under the assumption that those same tones will always be at the forefront. However, this season we’re seeing something bolder yet just as beautiful for fun, fabulous, and even funky nail trends.

This year, we’re looking at some bountiful blues. Not talking blistering sky or bright oceanic tones here; no, instead we’re looking more towards deep and soulful navy and gentle cornflower blue. Think those drowsy days where it’s just breezy enough that the sound of leaves rustling backdropped against a peaceful autumnal sky. If you want to go deeper, even midnight blue is on-trend.

The other colors we’re seeing this fall are luscious forest greens. Although most leaves have changed—and in some cases even dropped—we’re keeping cozy pines in mind as we paint our nails deep, natural greens.

Think your favorite spices: basil, sage, even rosemary: these natural greens will make for lovely nails accented alongside a neutral taupe or white.

As far as patterns go, we’re seeing angles and geometric shapes! Go diagonal across a nail or two for an accent, or do it across the board. There are also fun and angular stairstep shapes we’re seeing climbing across both coffin-style nail shapes and the classic rounded tip. Swirl patterns and crisscross plaid-like styles are also in, so feel free to experiment and individualize while you show off your flashy, fun nails! n

SEDATION DENTISTRY: Why be stressed when you can relax?

If you are looking for a deeper level of sedation, minimal sedation may be a better option. Minimal sedation can allow for a considerable amount of dental treatment to be completed in one appointment with little memory of the visit. This type of sedation requires a medical screening appointment, and you will need someone to drive you home.

Don’t allow fear to get in your way of receiving dental treatment. There are many types of sedation, be sure to ask your dentist about your options.

1. PUMPKIN Pumpkin spice and everything nice! Pumpkin is highly nutritious, unfortunately many pumpkin foods tend to be filled with sugar! Look for the real deal like pumpkin puree which is packed with vitamins and minerals like Vitamin A and C, plus it’s low in calories. It can be added to many recipes from muffins to pasta dishes, and if you love that pumpkin spice flavor, just use the actual spice! This blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice and cloves offer a host of health benefits, from anti-inflammatory properties, to helping aid in digestion and regulating blood sugar. A little spice goes a long way!

In the Kitchen: Fall Tablescape

I

t’s easy to bring all the fall feels into your home by creating a warm and inviting tablescape. This is the focal point of your dining space and sets the mood for the rest of the room. There are so many options to create a simple, inexpensive, and cozy dining area for your loved ones to gather around.

A great place to start your tablescape is with your centerpiece.

A centerpiece on your table is an easy way to decorate and captivate a room. Fall is all about getting back to nature, so let’s try to bring that to the table. Some great options can be one large vessel full of fall floral, a pile of mini pumpkins or a garland of greenery that runs down the center of the table. These organic elements will add eye-catching color and life to the table.

After your centerpiece is placed, you’ll want to add warmth and visual height to the table. An easy way to add both is by adding vintage brass candleholders with classic tall white candle sticks. In addition to candles, another way to add height is by incorporating wooden risers, a stack of books, a cake stand, or even a stack of plates to physically elevate your décor. To keep things interesting and unique, add some unexpected pieces like a honey jar, butter dish, or even a soup tureen into your tablescape.

Now that you have the center of the table decorated, you can move to the edges and complete the individual place settings.

Having lots of layers and textures will draw people to the table.

You can add layers by using everyday white plates and bowls on top of a charger. Try to use a charger that contrasts with both the table and the plates as this can add dimension to the dining experience. Another way to add texture and material to the table is to include cloth napkins or even a flatware pouch to each table setting to hold the cutlery. Copper mugs, hobnail drinking glasses, or crystal wine glasses can add another décor element to the table while also being functional.

Last but not least add some tasty snacks to the table. Your guests will be hungry just looking at this welcoming tablescape, so you may want to have something handy for them to munch on while they wait for dinner. Thin and crunchy breadsticks displayed in a water goblet or fresh bread in a basket can tide them over.

I

t’s not every day that one gets to see an exquisite home, draped in monochromatic hues and finished off with custom touches.

However, for homeowners Rene and JJ Stolsmark, waking up to beauty surrounding them is an everyday occurrence. “I love bold and dramatic décor,” adds Rene, who made the decision to move after spending 20 years and countless hours remodeling and updating their last home. “We worked on it and were still was not happy with the end result,” she adds. “There wasn’t much more we could do.” So they began the search for a different home when this beauty caught Rene’s eye.

Having just moved in December 2020, Rene began working room by room to create spaces that define who she is and really bring out her personality. Having a close relationship with Connie Sinclair of Montgomery’s Furniture, Rene had a clear vision for some areas but relied on a professional’s expertise for others.

Starting in the main entrance, tall ceilings, ample windows and neutral walls are flooded with sunlight during the day and glow at night by a large orb light fixture that dangles above; illuminating the various tones of metallic found in her accessories and décor.

“The first thing I did when we moved into this home was change out all the mirrors and lights,” adds Rene. Other changes included adding a slightly warmer hue to the painted walls.

One of the main reasons for the move was additional space. This home is definitely a good fit with large rooms, high ceilings and a family-friendly dining space that serves multiple purposes. The main level great room is cozied up with a neutral rug, black leather curved sectional sofa and zebra print chairs. Despite the formal feel with beams on the ceiling, a floor-to-ceiling cobble stone fireplace surround and distressed wood mantle, the room remains casual and soft with plenty of plush, welcoming pillows and laid back textures.

The fireplace is flanked by inbuilt custom arch-top bookcases perfect for both display and storage. Painted a contrasting hue of cream, the bookcases and trim add contrast to the paint color.

The dining area is one space that’s hard to define. Serving as a pass-through to get from the great room to kitchen, the builder elongated and widened the space enough where it became its own “room.” For Rene is was perfect because it allowed ample flex space to fully extend the contemporary wood table surrounded by upholstered chairs. “It makes hosting large groups of people so much better,” says Rene. “Nobody wants to be that twenty-yearold sitting at the kids table,” she laughs. For warmer months, the dining space is also convenient as it includes patio doors that lead to a covered outdoor deck complete with grill and lounge furniture.

The kitchen is where the family gathers. Although the Stolsmark’s are technically “empty nesters,” they wanted a place that could accommodate a lot of people. The kitchen is neutral with whitewashed custom cabinets, speckled marble countertops and stainless steel appliances. For lighting, Rene loved the unique dual-toned globe pendant lights with metallic gold accents that dangle above the oversized center island. A twist on traditional, a white subway tile backsplash is finished off with white grout for a sleek, modernized version of a classic.

Although this space is not glamorized with the name “mud room,” it is something that ranked high on Rene’s list of must-haves. The convenient built-in lockers offer ample storage space while pegs and baskets help keep things organized. The main floor powder bath makes a bold statement with black and white leaf motif wallpaper on the walls and a crystal, light fixture.

The master bedroom looks like something reminiscent of a palace. Walking in, one is greeted with a darker feel that comes across as luxurious comfort. The statement wall behind the custom bed and bedding features a silver metallic background while a large, black fleur-delis pattern adds subtle interest. “For this room, I did repurpose some of the furniture from our other home,” adds Rene. Despite having to add a little paint here and there and make small adjustments, the entire space just melts together effortlessly. Layers of custom bedding in a soft gold and various textures also add glamour that remains understated to blend with the rest of the room.

Another signature style for Rene is light fixture height. “I decided to use these as end table lights by hanging them low,” she adds when referencing the Moroccan-style glass lights.

Another bold space is the master bathroom. Rene once again utilized lower hung pendant lights rather than ceiling or wall mount. Dual sinks0 with custom dark wood cabinets add depth while the metallic navy and silver wallpaper just glistens in the natural sun creating the perfect backdrop for two, gold framed curved rectangular mirrors – a personal favorite of Renes'. Finishing off the room is a built-in Jacuzzi tub and glass walk-in shower.

In keeping with the bold theme of the home, the main floor full bathroom features wallpaper with a large floral pattern and colors of black, grey and hints of brassy golds. The large round mirror is the perfect spot for Rene to apply her make-up. And no space is complete without a statement light fixture. This time, Rene opted for a glass globe with brushed gold accents.

In addition to light fixtures and mirrors, Rene adds ceilings to her list of loves. “I fell in love with this wallpaper,” adds Rene of the peachy toned swirled wallpaper. “But I wasn’t sure where to use it.” Add in a beadwork chandelier and contrasting pale green walls and this serene space stays bright and airy. An intricate detailed wood headboard and vintage chenille bedding give an updated modern flair.

A continuation of flair can also be found in the second main floor bedroom. An ornate carved headboard with mirror accents and a creamy tufted fabric sets the stage for this space. Although regal, the soft tones with the occasional accent invite comfort. “And I love adding unique little touches,” she says while uncovering a small bird accent from the nightstand. I just love birds so I have them spread out and very tucked away just for fun.”

The lower level is perfect for a family who loves to entertain. Taking a turn for darker hues and rustic flair, Rene relied on the expertise of Connie from Montgomery’s to help finish off the space. “She literally came in here and put it all together,” adds Rene. Having purchased the bar heighth, white, marble-topped table, Connie went to work finishing off the full bar and theatre room. “These walls were more light and muted,” she adds.

“Connie suggested this really dark color called iron ore,” she says. “A lot of people doubted the selection but once we got it up on the walls and added the brushed gold sconces, it’s now a favorite.”

Despite being “settled in,” Rene will never be done decorating her sprawling ranch-style home. “We really love our house but still have a few things that need to be done.” Maybe it’s placing a small bird or hanging that perfect curve shaped mirror; whatever it is, it’s sure to be bold. n

For first-time homeowner Paige Hanisch, taking this step opened an exciting new chapter in her life. “As a recent college graduate and new teacher, I was really happy to take the next step in my life and own my own home. I am also fortunate to have a lot of handymen in my life that help me and teach me how to do other inexpensive upgrades such as installing new trim work, refinishing flooring and tiling.”

Unlike an hour-long show on HGTV where an entire home is renovated from top to bottom, the reality is quite different.

According to Paige, “The first things I wanted to complete were sanding and staining all of the original hardwood floors and repainting all of the rooms.

After we finished this, I focused on installing new baseboard, painting all of the doors, window frames, and ceilings, and installing flooring in the rest of the rooms in the house. I could not believe how much time all of this took, but what a difference it made!”

Caffeine: How Much is Too Much?

itter but beneficial, especially when you’re tired.

That’s a great way to summarize caffeine, which may be the world’s most widely used drug. Most of us love our coffee, tea and energy drinks – or good old soda pop – because they all offer this booster to our breakfasts, lunches and in some cases, working nights, too.

Knowing how much is too much is important. So how much caffeine is in the one you reach for at the c-store or order at the coffee shop?

Cheryl Rude, Avera Clinical Dietitian Coordinator at Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center, encourages all things in moderation, including caffeine, no matter where you get it from.

She notes that the highest amount recommended for adults is 400 mg per day, and most Americans do not exceed this amount. However, some people do, while others might be more sensitive to its effects.

“No matter how you get it – whether from a latte or a can of pop – it adds up,” Rude said. “Too much can cause jitters, trouble getting to sleep or remaining asleep and headaches. These can all be signs that you need to cut back and include more healthful options, such as water.”

Rude added that extremely large amounts can cause abnormal heart rhythms or lead to a rapid heartbeat.

“Children and adolescents should limit their consumption of caffeine even more than adults and opt for beverages such as water or milk, so they can avoid issues with

normal physical development,” she said. “Young adults should be reminded that our bodies continue to develop until approximately age 26, so too much caffeine can again be an issue.”

Keeping an eye on how much you ingest is never a bad idea, Rude said. She also mentioned the common misconception on serving sizes.

“You can look at a chart like the one with this story and think that your drink of choice isn’t too bad, but most coffee shops serve larger-than-8 ounce sized drinks, and it can add up fast,” she said. “The same rule applies for soda. If you drink a 20-ounce bottle of a higher-caffeine choice, you could be blasting past a modest amount of this stimulant.”

A New Way to

eight loss is a common struggle for Americans, but Sioux Falls Hypnosis is here to help people lose weight once and for all.

Daniel Burow spent two decades as a C-suite executive with several of the largest behavioral health service providers in the United States. After returning to Sioux Falls he decided to focus solely on helping clients through hypnosis, opening his practice over a year ago. Change in Behavior Leads to Brain Tumor Discovery Kim Olson’s sister knew something was wrong and got her to the hospital

im Olson always knew she wanted to come back home to Jackson, Minnesota after working in Pennsylvania for 32 years.

Her sister’s worry grew to the point where she thought Olson needed medical help.

She retired and made the move back to the Midwest to bunk up

She called an ambulance to take Olson to the Sanford emergency room in Jackson. Olson didn’t remember anything about the visit.

However, as soon as she moved in, her sister noticed something wasn’t right with Olson.

One of the first changes her sister noticed was how Olson struggled to do common, everyday tasks.

“I had no motivation at all,” she said.

“I guess it progressively got worse,” said Olson.

One morning, Olson’s sister went into the basement to find Olson sleeping on the floor next to her bed.

Later on, she talked with the emergency room doctor who cared for her that night. He told her that she could barely communicate.

The doctor ordered a CT scan, which again, Olson didn’t remember.

But, what happened next Olson will never forget. “I do remember him coming into the exam room and told me I have a large mass in my head, and I’m going to need surgery,” she said.

As soon as the mass was discovered, Olson was transported to Sanford Health, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The next morning, she met with Sanford Health neurosurgeon Shawn

Vuong, M.D., who said they’d need to remove the mass immediately.

“By the time she got to us, she was laying in bed, wouldn’t talk, completely out of it,” he said.

Dr. Vuong described the brain tumor as “massive.” However, it’s not uncommon for tumors of this size to go undetected, he said.

“Patients can’t feel the brain itself. It doesn’t have any pain pathways. So, they don’t really notice that extra pressure on the brain and that’s when (symptoms) develop, because of the pressure of the tumor on the brain.

“If it’s near the motor area, it will cause weakness. If it’s near the sensory area, it will cause sensory issues. And, when it’s frontal, it will cause executive function and personality problems,” said Dr. Vuong.

Olson had the operation to remove her tumor done that day.

“I don’t remember waking up, I don’t remember the surgery, I don’t remember recovery. That day was just a big black hole.”

Dr. Vuong said the surgery took six hours.

Olson recovered for a few days, and was then transferred to the rehabilitation services unit at Sanford Health before being discharged and able to go home.

But, when she got home she “had a mess to clean up.”

“I had a bunch of phone calls to make. I neglected to change my address, or cancel services I’m getting at my home in Pennsylvania, all that stuff. I just didn’t do any of it,” she said.

Her sister said she could spot the night and day difference in Olson’s behavior immediately.

“My sister said, ‘oh my god, I can’t believe you’re actually answering the phone!’ I started doing things around the house too, like unloading the dishwasher, vacuuming the basement,” said Olson.

At a family vacation, Olson’s aunts were together and also immediately noticed how much better Olson was – how engaged she was in everyday life and conversation.

“They were all afraid I was going to die,” she said.

Olson says she considers herself both lucky to be alive, and lucky to have such a supportive family. Had her sister not called the ambulance, her story may have ended differently.

“I really have to credit my sister for finally just going, ‘You have to go to the emergency room,’ because the CT (scan) was the answer. Even though you don’t want to hear you have a brain surgery, at least that answered some questions of why my behavior changed.” n

Earlens: How Sound is Meant to be Heard The world’s only hearing lens

A

udiologist Bob Froke talks to lots of patients at Midwest ENT & ALLERGY about why Earlens is more than an ordinary hearing aid. But it’s more than just his training and knowledge of the device that gives him confidence in the product. He wears one himself.

Developed in 2017, Earlens is an FDA-approved hearing device that is not an implant nor a conventional hearing aid but rather a hearing lens. This lens-based technology addresses the need for better sound. While most hearing aids amplify mid tones, they are less effective with the highs and lows resulting in flat, dull sound and making it hard to follow conversations in a crowd. Earlens uses a tiny custom lens that rests next to the eardrum and directly vibrates the eardrum, so no speaker is needed. Users experience 2.5X the sound range versus the conventional hearing aid.

Unique to Earlens is that it is made up of three components: a processor; an ear tip; and a lens. The three work in conjunction with one another. Earlens is only available from an ENT practice, so patients who choose it have two-fold medical expertise as an audiologist and an ENT physician work together to properly customize the device from fitting to programming.

“As an audiologist, I have been working with and observing Earlens patients for nearly a year, and they continue to sing praises for their new device and how well they are now hearing,” said Froke.

“I lost my hearing seven and a half years ago because of a virus and have now worn a hearing aid for seven years. The longer I dispensed the device, the more curious I became.

I wanted to see for myself its efficacy. Maybe it would work for me, too.”

In August, Froke was fitted with Earlens. Today he says he couldn’t be more pleased with his hearing device.

“The most significant difference for me is how Earlens delivers sound to my ear. It provides so much clarity. And the biggest bonus is that it manages my tinnitus making it quiet,” he said. “I am delighted with the results.”

Taking on the

Kim Hubers is the girl next door you need to know

L

iving just minutes outside of Sioux Falls on a sweet hobby farm with 140 adorable, almost storybook-like farm animals, Kim Hubers has found her place and her path. She is a wife, mother, Army veteran, home renovator, small business entrepreneur and consummate volunteer.

Born in Iowa, Kim grew up on a family farm surrounded by open air and animals. Adventurous from day one, she decided to spread her wings to attend South Dakota State University to get out of her bubble and meet new people. Nearly two decades later she has served in the Army National Guard and has been deployed three times including a tour as a heavy vehicle operator in Iraq. “I saw the entire country change before my eyes. When I first got there the oil wells were on fire, there were babies barely able to walk on the hot asphalt and sand begging for water. On the way back the same children were wearing uniforms, going to school and waving at us.”

This is also where she met her husband Clinton. “As ugly as war is, literally everything good in my life came from it.” Over the past several years Kim has dedicated her life to earning two Master’s degrees while raising their four children and working alongside Clinton to flip houses, for over the past eight years, as they lived in them.

On top of that, she had four children in just six years and was a stay-at-home mom for them. “I was always jealous of stay at home mom’s until I actually became one! I thought it was a lucky and glamorous thing but, it’s not. They were the most difficult years of my life but I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

The amount of time spent with my kids and the adventures and the creative things and exposures to the world I was able to give them was incredible.”

She shares, “They got the best of me each day, and before when I was working, it was work that got my best and my kids got what was left when I came home. The closeness I have with my kids and the pictures and moments that I know I was so lucky to share with them are priceless!”

Now with her kids off to school, Kim has pushed forward full-throttle with her new business, a dream she has been pursuing for fifteen years. Blending her love for animals, her degrees in counseling and leadership and a need to help and bring joy to others; Willow Meadows Farm has become a cultivation of everything precious to Kim. Currently operating as a mobile petting zoo in an up-cycled shuttle bus, Kim and her family have incredible plans in store. “This is a way to help generate what I need to make a down payment on a building on our farm that can house a room for parties, indoor play space, recreational and educational activities, classes and crafts and anything I can dream up to bring families together and bring them joy on my farm. I intend to start with a smaller building and eventually add on my bigger dream of a large indoor playground with an indoor track and wheelchair accessible play equipment as well as an outdoor park with a farm life flair.”

Ever ambitious, she has even built her own website www.willowmeadowsfarm.com and posts farm antics on Tik Tok. And while taking this all on may be daunting for some, Kim handles it all in stride and continues to look for ways she can continue to help her community. She volunteers at her church and currently serves as the Senior Vice Commander with the Disabled American Veterans Arthur H. Muchow Chapter No. 1. “There was a big part of me missing when I retired from the Army National Guard. To have that special group back in my life with people who are some of the few that understand what I have gone through including my sacrifices and my fears. That sense of belonging is incredibly painful to lose when you leave the service.”

She continues, “The DAV gives us so much support and so much freedom to do great things. I’m looking forward to not only coming up with new ideas but being able to collaborate with other Veterans on what they want and what they need, so we can fill those needs. I am hoping to have Veterans reach out to me and bring me ideas too, the more minds working, the better the outcome.

It’s not about membership, we don’t force that, it’s about helping Veterans and I am very proud to be part of a professional organization that covers and cares about every single aspect of what a Veteran needs.”

I get paid to share what I have and love with people and make them smile and happy. That’s my job now and it’s ridiculously fun. My husband never grew up with animals and he wasn’t a 100% on board with all the animals we have but when he saw a few different groups come out to our farm and saw the interaction, he said he saw how amazing and special it was.

At the end of the day, Kim admits that her life’s journey has frequently put her own needs on the back burner but has amazing advice for other women wanting to reclaim their own, personal happiness. “Do not feel guilty. If you don’t make yourself matter you will look at yourself someday and wonder where you went. Who are you? Why are you not feeling like yourself anymore? You need to maintain something that you look forward to each week at least, something that brings you joy outside of children and family. If you don’t practice self-care, you are teaching your children to do the same. Sometimes when you are a mom, thinking about yourself is hard but seeing it through that lens, what you are showing your kids, can help bring things into perspective.”

As for her future? Kim has simple, but extremely meaningful aspirations. “My number one goal, as cheesy as it is going to sound, is that I want my kids to grow up to be strong, independent, happy, kind adults that bring good things into this world. Staying a close knit family is my most important goal.” She adds, “I have wants too, such as traveling the world with my husband when the kids are all out of the house, having a business that brings joy and can grow and be around for decades, to find joy in my own life every day and follow my passions. But those are not goals so much as things I want. I don’t need any of that but I do need my husband and my kids and their happiness for my soul to be content.” n

Artistry Dance opens in Sioux Falls

arc Anthony is credited with saying, “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Sioux Falls resident Kristie Moore is an example of that statement. Her passion for dance motivated her to share it with others as she says, “I love dance, and I love the opportunities teaching provides.

I am blessed to be able to share with students the art and beauty of dance. Getting to know them personally, as dancers, and as individuals is a joy. Challenging them to do their best while also having fun is our goal, and I am humbled to be able to encourage them in a way that extends beyond dance.”

Teaching dance is an adventure that Moore feels is entirely worth the effort. After opening her first dance studio in Onida and a second location in Pierre, followed by a few relocations, the ambitious woman spent seven years at home caring for her five daughters while completing an MPA. Moore also enjoyed various professional work experiences that, combined with her life experiences, helped prepare her to operate her studios. She explains, “I feel better than ever about teaching young and teenage girls, creating a special place, and managing all aspects of operating a dance studio.”

This year, Moore opened Artistry Dance at 2912 E. Jackson Street in Sioux Falls. Offering quality instruction to beginning and advanced students ages 3 through adult, the studio features classes for ballet, pre-ballet (for preschool students), pointe, tap, jazz, modern, contemporary/lyrical, hip hop, liturgical, Irish, and adaptive (for students with Down Syndrome). The goal is to provide an exceptional experience; as Moore comments, “In all classes, student numbers will be limited to ensure every dancer has the space to move and instructors have the opportunity to give every dancer the individual attention required for correction and growth.” Numerous class options are offered at a variety of times to accommodate skill levels and schedule needs, and Artistry Dance will also establish a competitive program for students seeking challenging choreography, group camaraderie, and the

thrill of competition. All students will participate in endof-year recitals to showcase months of hard work, and an optional winter ballet performance will be offered.

veteran audiologist has opened her own shop in Sioux Falls. In June, Angela Sieh Ceretto opened an audiology practice, Pinnacle Audiology, LLC on the

bustling corner of 77th and Minnesota.

Angela (Angi) has 20 years of experience as an audiologist, but her personal experience with hearing loss started much earlier.

“My dad lost some hearing in one ear from a childhood accident. He was never in denial about his hearing, he just never did anything about his problem. I grew up watching him struggle. It created a lot of stress in our family due to

misunderstandings

and

missed

communications.

Sometimes the TV was so loud the rest of the family would leave the room.”

She recalled being a teenager and a flock of birds lifted out of a tree where her dad was standing. “I looked at my dad and said, ‘wow, they were loud.’ He had no idea what I was talking about because he had not heard them.”

Far too many people put off hearing care for years she says.

“When I finished my graduate program, I fitted my dad with his first pair of hearing aids.”

Being able to make a difference in an individual’s quality of life is a major goal for Angi and her new business, but so is affordability. Before opening, she did research on the audiology market in Sioux Falls and found a niche of service.

“What makes my practice unique is that it is built on a fully unbundled service model – there is a separate fee for each expert service and itemized separately from the cost of the

aids. This way, patients know exactly what they are paying for. This allows for decreased upfront costs and lowered barriers of care.”

Separate expert service fees also mean Pinnacle Audiology, LLC can help any patient no matter where they obtained their device.

One area of care her business emphasizes is the technological advances available in hearing aids. To make this possible, Angi works with major manufacturers for the best technology.

“It’s all about personalized care,” she says.

Angi attended USD, graduating in 1995 and then receiving a Master’s in Audiology in 2001. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Audiology and is certified by the American Speech-LanguageHearing Association.

South Dakota has been Angi’s home for 30 years. She and her husband Chris have been married for 25 years and have two sons, Giovanni and Angelo and their dog, Penny. The family lives near Harrisburg.
