Letter From the Editor

BE PREPARED

for the Overflow

Do all we can to prepare for the Lord’s blessing and to live in the overflow of His blessings? II Kings 3:16-18 says "Thus says the LORD: ’Make this valley full of ditches.’ For thus says the LORD: ’You shall not see wind, nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, so that you, your cattle, and your animals may drink.’ And this is a simple matter in the sight of the LORD; He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.” How did the Israelites prepare? They actually obeyed when it seemed foolish. DIG DITCHES? Is there anything God is talking to you about that might seem foolish? It is also important to obey when it seems difficult. Is there anything that God is talking to you about that might seem like it’s difficult to obey? I challenge you to obey completely. They obeyed so completely that God used the overflow to win a great battle. How can we prepare for God’s blessing? Take extra time to seek God’s guidance. Break down barriers that might be between you and other Christians. “Finish the job” and obey in the areas that you may have been putting off. It is important that we know that OBEDIENCE IS THE KEY! Can you obey even without knowing what is required? The next key would then be FAITH! Living in the extreme faith to believe God that He will bless your efforts, bless your time and energy, make manifest His promises and cause you to live in the overflow of His grace, mercy, favor, love, etc., etc., etc.

The Lord leads people who are already doing what they are supposed to be and revives those whose hearts are prepared for His blessings. I would submit to you that you already possess the light of obedience and faith. If you’ll walk in the light you’ve already got, God will show you how you can move closer to him in the next few days! Serving the Lord of the OVERFLOW,

Rev. Celeste Kelley

Destiny

By Evangelist Michelle A. Moorer READ: Ecclesiastes 6:10-12 NIV Jeremiah 18:6 NIV Romans 9:21-24 NIV

Everything you do in this life has already been decided by God; whether you understand it or if it does not make any sense. God has already predestined our footsteps. In Ecclesiastes 6: 10-12 NLT states “Everything has already been decided. It was known long ago what each person would be. So there’s no use arguing with God about your destiny. The more words you speak, the less they mean. So why overdo it? In the few days of our empty lives, who knows how our days can be best spent? And who can tell what will happen in the future after we are gone?” God knows and directs everything that happens, and he is in complete control over our lives, even though at times it may not seem like it. How foolish it is for us to contend with our Creator, who knows us completely and can see the future. In Jeremiah 18:6 NIV says “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.” I would like for you to visualize a potter molding or shaping clay on the wheel. A perfect example is the movie Ghost when Demi Moore was pottering and some of her pottering was not perfect and she would give up and stop and then try again. In this movie Demi Moore had control over the clay to clean up the defects or reshape the pottery.

power to transform any one to do His will. God already said his word will not come back void. Our strategy should not be to become mindless and passive on one aspect of clay, but to be willing and receptive to God’s impact on us. I would like for you to pay attention to the work God is doing in your life. As we yield and obey God, he begins to reshape us into valuable vessels. Think about a time where God was so patient with you and the only thing you could see was God’s mercy and grace in your life? Think about some areas of your life where God rescued you from yourself when you were heading for destruction or already in destruction? How did he turn your life around? What are some of the things God did for you? Pray Father God, in the name of Jesus help me to fulfill my purpose in life. Help me to stay on a straight and narrow road because in your word wide is the way to destruction. Place people in my life to help me become all I need to be to get to the next level in my life. About Us Our Mission: We deliver innovative care, support, treatment and education to vulnerable youth so that they heal, believe in their worth, and build the skills needed to succeed. Our Vision: We will ensure that vulnerable youth and families are supported, prepared and equipped to achieve lifelong success. Our Core Values:     

Respect the sanctity of life, intrinsic dignity and inherent worth of all individuals Honor Vista Maria's spiritual foundation Empower our employees and consumers to achieve positive change Demonstrate compassion and genuine concern for others in all of our actions Celebrate the diverse cultural heritage and background of all our consumers and stakeholders

Philosophy of Care: Vista Maria's success is based on the philosophy of Saint Mary Euphrasia Pelletier, who founded the Sisters of the Good Shepherd - the community of women who founded Vista Maria. Her compassion, empathy, and interest in helping marginalized women and children evolved out of her own experience as a troubled adolescent. This underlying spirituality guides the Sisters and lay staff at Vista Maria today. Our philosophy of care flows from a theology of love and our staff has fully incorporated this into their work. Every girl is treated as a unique individual - worthy of love based on just who she is. Therapy is designed around each girl's individual experiences and needs. This encompasses a variety of activities that address the physical, spiritual, intellectual, and recreational well being of the girls. Our staff knows that healing takes place in connection with others. Thus, their goal is to create an environment in which healing can occur. Each girl is given love, affection, and someone to talk with (not at) them. This approach is holistic and life-giving.

SISTAH Teen Mentoring Initiative

Turning Dreams Into Reality Karen has worked hard to defy the odds that seem to hover over her life, family and home. She was determined to be the first person in her family to go to college, but was struggling with her high school classes. She lacked the guidance, motivation and support from her family that so many children receive during their adolescent years. Fortunately, one of Karen's teachers recommended the Dreams Realized through Education and Mentoring (DREAM) program at Vista Maria. It was at her first DREAM session that Karen met Lisa, a DREAM mentor. Lisa tutored Karen and helped with her homework. They talked about normal teen issues like boys, friends, what Karen wanted to study when she went to college, and her future aspirations. Karen finally had the life support and motivation she needed to overcome the odds. Karen is a shining example of how Vista Maria's Village of Hope programs are helping at-risk youth overcome barriers to their future success. When complete, the Village of Hope initiative will allow Vista Maria to expand essential programs and services to hundreds more at-risk children and families from our surrounding communities each year. Programs, like DREAM, provide youth with a foundation of support that carries them into adulthood. With essential programs and supportive services firmly in place, the cycle of poverty, that so many of our children are trapped in, will finally be broken.

Girls discover that they have value and that life has worth. Vista Maria becomes a place where girls can take their greatest fears and turn them into their greatest strengths.

FACT: Girls ages 12 to 24 are at the greatest risk for experiencing a sexual assault (U.S.

Department of Justice 2001) Additional Statistics:    

20% of high school girls ages 14-18 report being hit, slapped, shoved or forced into sexual activity by a dating partner (Journal of the American Medical Association, 2001). According to recent studies, violence against girls is a serious concern as it now affects 1 in 3 girls in the United States. The violence can in the form of physical, sexual, or verbal abuse. For girls, their perpetrator is more likely to be someone they know, feel close to or even love, including a boyfriend or family member. Girls aged 16 to 19 are four times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault (National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) designed by the U.S. Department of Justice (2000). The National College Women Sexual Victimization Study estimated that between 1 in 4 and 1 in 5 college women experience completed or attempted rape during their college years (Fisher 2000).

Trusting God By Francine E. Shaw

Most of us, as believers, seem to pick and choose what we believe, when it comes to the Word of God. We treat God’s Word, as if it is some kind of smorgasbord. What I have notice about one verse in particularly, is Malachi 3:10, which says: “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” We do not want to choose or claim this verse. Why? It involves money. It involves us giving back to God. We always want from God, but now, the shoe is on the other foot. Do we really trust God, or are we relying on another, or ourselves? Trusting God is the first step to becoming financially successful from a Biblical perspective. Sometimes, the most pressing difficulties facing the believer, is in the area of finances, simply because, we have not learned how to develop self-control, and discipline. Courage, on the other hand, is the ability to face difficulty or danger with firmness, and without fear. When we truly trust God, we receive courage to face the uncertainties of life. It is difficult enough to be relaxed and efficient at work when one is perpetually worried about our finances. Our financial problems come because of our attitudes toward money, and inefficiencies in handling it wisely. We must view money realistically. In one of Jesus’ parables, he described a man whose life had been spent

12

in the accumulation of wealth. Then the man died, unprepared to meet God and forced to leave his precious possessions to someone else. Jesus called this man a fool. He was rich in worldly possessions, but poor in his relationship with God. (Luke 2:16-21). God gives us the ability to prosper, to become wealthy, or He sometimes only supplies our needs, and expects us to trust Him. This was seen in the life of the Prophet Elijah (Deuteronomy 8:17; 1Kings 17; 3 John 2). In trusting God, we must come to realize that everything that is made was made by Him. There is nothing that was not made by Him, and that all things consist in Him. He has the power and authority to give us everything we need, and the desires of our hearts. Even though God is sovereign, some of His blessings are conditional (John1:1-3; Deuteronomy 28). The key to trusting God is obedience, when God speak to our hearts. He wants us to obey. The divine favor of the LORD is given to those who love and honor Him. Those who seek Him for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding needed to become obedient to His will. Proverbs 8:33-35 says: “Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favor of the LORD (Proverbs 8:17-21; Proverbs 10:22).

SISTAH TALK | APRIL – JUNE, 2013 | WWW.THESISTAHSMINISTRY.COM

When we neglect to give our tithe to the church, which is the body of Christ, and the kingdom of God, we are dishonoring God, and are robbing Him. Malachi 3:8-10 asks us this question: “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing (Proverbs 10:22), that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

God challenges us to prove or test Him, and while we are testing Him. He says, I will turn back the devourer from bringing you to financial ruins, and in your faithfulness. I will open the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. God is speaking of a continual flow of His blessing upon us. So, the tithe belongs to the LORD, and is the spiritual mark of God. The visible sign of our trust in Him. God gives marks for the purpose of identifying something or someone (Genesis 4:15; Ezekiel 9:4-7; Romans 16:17-20). The offering, on the other hand, is what gives us the increase (2 Corinthians 9:6-8). ©2013 Francine E. Shaw – All Rights Reserved.

Today, the United States has been rocked to its very core, because of an economic collapse, that many predict has greater ramifications and is some ways more far reaching than the financial collapse of the Great Depression. But there is good news. We, as Christians, are not under that economy. We are under the economy of God. Those who trust and honor, through obedience the sovereign authority and power of God shall rise above it. In Wisdom for Financial Success from a Biblical Perspective, Francine Shaw details how God moved her from a place of lack, to a place where not only her needs were met, but she had more than enough to accomplish the Kingdom objectives that God places in her path, according to 2 Corinthians 9:8: And God [is] able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all [things], may abound to every good work... Shaw discusses the difference between the world s economic system and the Kingdom s of God economic systems. She also discusses strategies, such as, tithing, debt elimination, living within your means and giving your way to true financial success and contentment. Wisdom for Financial Success from a Biblical Perspective, will help you gain an understanding and desire to seek after God s truth, and way of doing things so that He can direct your paths, according to Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Rerun… to New Episodes By Pastor Andra Allen Standberry

When we think of rerun from a television perspective, we think of a television show we are watching again that we have seen before. If we have watched that show a number of times, we can almost say the lines verbatim. So, perhaps it is safe to say another name for rerun is repeat. What do you think?

rebellion seemed to be a common thread of their crisis and overall journey. Even Miriam, Moses sister, was struck with leprosy (Num. 12) for rebelling against Moses for marrying an Ethiopian woman, but God healed Miriam because of Moses’ intercession on her behalf.

Watching reruns have excellent value such as we get an opportunity to learn more about the plot of the story that we did not notice before; we get an opportunity to see new a segment we missed in the initial viewing; and we can get an opportunity to realize in many instances that we have outgrown the show and that it does not appeal to us anymore!

In many instances, not getting what we want causes us to murmur, complain and eventually rebel, which represents the absence of thanksgiving, appreciation, and gratefulness. Selfishness is at the root of this, and rebellion is as a sin of witchcraft (1 Sam 15:23). We can change the outcome of our life story by carefully reviewing the passages of scripture above denoting the five crisis that caused the nearly 40 year Israelites rerun. The primary value in my opinion of the Israelite 40 year rerun was to learn more about the plot we did not notice before (John 10:10) which is a big one: the devil comes but for to kill, steal and destroy but I (Jesus) came that you may have life and have it more abundantly(paraphrased). My prayer, take home word, and hope for us is: start living new episodes in our lives. How do we do that? By asking God to reveal Jesus Christ to us every day for without the revelation of Jesus Christ each day, our minds and heart will not change nor will we know our purpose and God’s plan for our lives. Matthew 16:13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Eliass; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. [KJV]

This passage of scripture came to mind regarding rerun. Deuteronomy 1 and it reads 6 The LORD our God said to us at Horeb, “You have stayed long enough at this mountain. 7 Break camp and advance into the hill country of the Amorites; go to all the neighboring peoples in the Arabah, in the mountains, in the western foothills, in the Negev and along the coast, to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon, as far as the great river, the Euphrates. 2 (It takes eleven days to go from Horeb to Kadesh Barnea by the Mount Seir road.) 1These are the words Moses spoke to all Israel in the wilderness east of the Jordan— that is, in the Arabah—opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab. [NIV] Here, Moses gives a recount of God’s promises to Israel. Horeb is another name for Mt. Sinai. This journey would have normally taken the children of Israel 11 days, but it ended up taking them almost 40 years. Why did it take them so long when they were so close? The King James Study Bible stated five crisis were recorded of their journey: the first one was on thirst (Exodus 15:22-27); the second one centered on hunger (Exodus 16); the third one centered on thirst again (Exodus 17:1-7); the fourth one centered on war (Exodus 17:8-16); and the fifth dealt with overwork (Exodus 18:1-27). Murmuring, complaining, and

A SISTAH’S LIFESTYLE –

Life Coaching Principles

Built to Last By Jamietra Hennington

Can you recall those days that seem like everything has gone wrong? We all have them. You may be having one of those days today. I recall a day in particular when I felt like the enemy pulled my name from a hat and declared he would release all of his forces against me. I remember thinking, “Let me get home before anything else goes wrong.” As I was thinking this, I was sitting at a red stop light near my apartment when I looked in my rear view mirror and saw a car speeding my way. Of course, I was thinking they were going to slow down. Imagine my surprise when the car slammed right into me and almost caused me to hit the truck in front of me. However, I was thankful that the light had turned green by this point. At this time in my life, I had a Saturn L300. The car that hit me had a lot of damage, but my car rarely had any. When my Mother arrived at the scene, she made a statement that stuck with me. She stated, “You know those Saturns, they are built to last.” I then began to reflect on my day and was able to receive a very powerful message from God from this very experience. No matter what is occurring in your life, know that you are built to last. II Corinthians 4:8-11 says, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh.”

have trouble, God has not designed this life for our troubles to be a worry. He tells us in Philippians 4:6-7, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (NIV).” We become confused due to the experiences in this life, but the Holy Spirit can fill us with much hope instead of us living a life of misery. We will be mistreated, but God has promised to never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). No matter what happens that may knock the wind out of you, it does not have permission to overtake you. We are victorious. We have the power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19) because God has built us to last. We are built to withstand the test of ever circumstance because God is with us. If God be for us who or what can be against us? We are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus (Romans 8:31, 37). Therefore stand boldly today with complete understanding that you are built to last. If it’s a situation at work; you are built to last. Your family looks like it’s falling apart, but you’re built to last. Your financial obligations outweigh the money you have in your account or in your pocket, but you are built to last. Your health may be declining, but God has not completed his work in you. I encourage you to trust that what God has placed inside of you will help you endure and overcome any obstacle in life. Shine By Pamyla Floyd

And whatsoever ye do, it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Colossians 3:23

There are a lot of things that easily puts a smile on our faces; the warmth of the early morning sun, the smile of a child, seeing people who are in love. I could go on and on. These are just a few of the things that make us ‘shine’. But what if the day is dreary, the child continually cries and instead of returning a smile, people are scowling at us? If we really have the joy of the Lord on the inside of us, none of these will keep us from returning a smile. Its what’s on the inside, that internal force that causes us to shine, no matter where we are, who we are around, or the circumstances we find ourselves in. Matthew 5:16 says to let your light so shine before men, so they would see your good works and glorify God in heaven. Satan bombards us with various trials and situations intended to steal our joy, but Jesus has conquered the world, so that through Him, we would be more than conquerors. We are called to stand, and if we ask, He will give us the strength to do so. We can do all things through Christ which strengthens us, and there is nothing or anyone that can pluck us from the Lord’s hand, John 10:28. But to shine, that means to not focus on our own situations and circumstances and continue to run this race that has been set before us. Each of us must get to the point in our walk, where the childish things are put away. We must grow and mature and become more selfless and less selfish. We can reach out and make a difference in the lives of others, even when we are in pain. Someone needs to hear the testimony of how the Lord is bringing you through a trying time. Someone needs to

know that what they are facing is only temporary, that God has not forgotten them, and that joy comes in the morning. I was talking with my co pastor about the storms of life one day, and she pointed out that sometimes our blessings are wrapped up in storm clouds! Wow what a revelation! I have not looked at storms the same. We all have a word of encouragement to share. Shine! As long as you have breath in your body and are awakened to see another day, you have the chance to stand in the gap and bless someone. I resolved to serve the Lord all the days of my life. That includes the times when things are not so sunny in my own life. I will not let temporary circumstances, turn the course of my life, away from the Lord. With all that you have in you, just shine for the Lord. Our God is faithful and He is just. The promises God made you are not voided, because they have not come to pass yet; nor were they ismissed because disaster struck. He is not slack concerning His promises. II Peter 3:9a He knows where we are at all times, abd He knows what we have need of. He loves and cares for each of us, and is NOT a respecter of persons. Would you learn anything, grow or be able to help someone else if everything went your way? None of us would be of much good if we lived a life like this. Let’s take the focus off of ourselves and Shine! Give of yourself no matter where you are. You are sure to be surprised at what He has, with your name on it. ©2011 Pamyla Floyd – All Rights Reserved.

Watch Your Mouth By Deborah Williams

Proverbs 18:21(NKJV) Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Proverbs 17:27(NLT) A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered. Do you want to hear something funny? (Well, not so funny) I sat in my office one day talking to a co-worker on the phone about how much my boss was annoying me. I inconspicuously ended the phone call when my boss walked into the room, but continued my rant via email. I feverishly typed, “Tony (not his real name) is getting on my last nerve. If he says another word to me I’m going to let him have it. He definitely won’t forget the moment!” And then I hit send. The only problem was that I mistakenly sent the email to Tony instead of to my colleague. Tony ended up laughing it off and we managed to maintain a good working relationship. But, I don’t think I need to tell you that for the moment I’d gotten myself into a tight spot. You’ve probably heard the childhood idiom, ‘sticks and stones may break your bones but words will never harm you’. And, you may have also heard children say, “I’m rubber, you’re glue; whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you.” Well, there’s very little, if any, truth to these sayings. In fact, whether deliberate or idle, misappropriated words can hurt. Words can either harm or help, tear down or build up, depress or encourage. Once uttered into the atmosphere words have a lasting effect. To ensure that we build and not destroy, wisdom dictates that we speak with restraint, carefully considering our words and conversation. Now with that said, I had a bit of difficulty coming up with a testimonial for this chapter. I literally spent months pondering what testimony to use or story to tell that would best relay the message. And then, I finally realized the cause of my writer’s block. My conversations were out of sync with the point I was trying to convey. I definitely was not practicing the lesson I intended to communicate. (Ouch!) I thought to myself, “How can I possibly encourage someone else to do something that I’m not doing?” I had to admit that the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart were all too often unacceptable to God. I had to repent.

18

My mind ran across some not-so-fond memories of times when I fussed about my loved ones faults, complained and fretted about situations outside of my control, indulged in idle telephone chatter that went on so long that I started gossiping and speaking negative things into the lives of others. Of course, I also speak in love and say positive things to encourage others as well as myself; and I practice thanking God for all that He does for me. But, since when does clean water and sewage water flow from the same pipe? Just as sewage water contaminates the pipe from which it flows, making impure any clean water that might flow through the same conduit, so too does negative speech infect the speaker and taint the speech. And by the way, if the water’s source is unclean the water that springs forth will also be unclean. So here’s where I am today. I’m in the book of Proverbs, also known as the book of Wisdom, learning some reasons for good conversation and practical ways to change the course of my life by the words I speak. 

Psalm 19:14(NKJV) Let the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.

It is a characteristic of wisdom to first filter ones words through restraint.

Proverbs 12:14(CJB) One can be filled with good as the result of one's words, and one gets the reward one's deeds deserve.

Don’t use your words to describe your situation. Use them to define your situation. Frame your world by the words you speak.

SISTAH TALK | APRIL – JUNE, 2013 | WWW.THESISTAHSMINISTRY.COM

Seek God in order to change the meditations of your heart. Then the words that emanate from your heart and pass through your lips will change too. 

A mark of maturity is the ability to hold your peace.

You can’t take authority over the storm with the voice of fear.

Proverbs 10:19(NIV) Where words are many sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise.

You can lose God’s blessing by having a loose mouth.

The one who speaks with truth and stands for righteousness is the victor.

It’s true; the world around us can be bleak and full of darkness. But, don’t curse the darkness, light a candle.

A word in season can change the course of your life and the lives of those around you.

Children have more need of models than of critics.

Gossip is the art of saying nothing in a way that leaves nothing unsaid.

Refuse to be a self-proclaimed minority. There’s nothing minor about you. Tell yourself and everyone else: God + me = The Majority.

If you find it difficult to thank God for what you have; If you can’t seem to thank God for what has happened; Then you ought to thank God for what you don’t have and for what He’s kept from happening. An attitude of gratitude and a mouth full of praise will take you far. ©2010 Deborah Williams – All Rights Reserved.

Four Ways to Freshen Up Your Sassy By Christine Pembleton

heat makes all scents carry through the air. So, make sure you test this before making your final selection. Are you ready for the summer dating season? We’re talking BBQs, trips to exotic locations, and parties almost every weekend! If you thought the spring was great, get ready for the hottest “mating season.” It’s going to be an amazing time to meet new people, but you have to ready. Here are some things you can do to “Freshen Up Your Sassy” so you’re ready to meet more men. Purchase a new “under the hood” wardrobe. There’s nothing like the feeling of having a new wardrobe of panties and bras to make you feel like a new woman. Throw out anything with a hole or stretched out elastic. Then go out and get 7 matching sets, one for each day of the week. The “girls” will get a much needed lift and you’ll have a new switch in your hips. Select a new summer fragrance. Whether you’re picking something from your collection or getting something new, select a fragrance for the summer season and scent yourself each day. Remember, the

Commit to regular pedi’s. Open-toed shoes and sandals demand a pedicure. You can start a monthly schedule and try to maintain at home. But if you really want toes that “talk”, go every two weeks and get a fresh coat of paint. The color of your nails is less important than the beauty of manicured feet. Try a 7-day cleanse. You’ll need your energy to keep up with your active social schedule. Go to your local health food store and ask for the clerk to recommend a cleanse you can do to purge toxins and give your body a break. A light diet during the summer months will keep you going full speed. You may also notice your clothes fitting better by August. (smile) What are your plans for the summer? Cash Advance Loans: It CAN Wait Until Payday!

A payday loan is essentially money borrowed to be repaid when you get your next paycheck. It sounds pretty simple, right? That is until you find out that these loans charge the highest interest rate of any loan option available, and that payday lenders are highly concentrated in lower income areas. Those two attributes make payday loans predatory and deceptive in nature. Many in these areas flock to payday loan establishments because they can’t go to traditional banks to borrow when times get tight. It’s understandable—the rent is due, the car breaks down, a sudden illness or other emergency pops up and cash is needed fast. Many of those who use these loans aren’t financially savvy and may not understand that the interest rate they are going to pay is unreasonable. All they know is they need the money and this is the only place they can get it. It is easier than ever to get the money but not so easy to pay it back. read more...

Living in the Overflow of

G o o d T im e s Beautiful and multi-talented Bern Nadette Stanis was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of five, her grandmother took her to tap dance lessons where she began performing. She began acting after a play she was in during high school entitled "The Three Faces of Eve." She graduated with honors from Erasmus High School and was accepted to Julliard School of Performing Arts where she received her B.A. in Drama. Bern Nadette was picked out to read for the role of Thelma in "Good Times" while she was competing in a beauty pageant. She is known all over the world for her role as Thelma in one of the funniest (and few) sitcoms featuring an African American family. Her beautiful face, singing and dancing ability, and sharp 70's responses to Thelma's annoying brother JJ, made Bern Nadette an "it" girl and sex symbol of the 70's. Bern Nadette Stanis is best known as the quick witted, sexy savvy and the original “It” girl, Thelma Evans, from the groundbreaking, first African American sitcom, “Good Times.” The still sexy 70’s star needs no redefining. Bern Nadette remains the personification of the ‘gem’ that young girls want to emulate and that we’ve all come to know and love. Undeniably, the onyx beauty is exquisitely graceful in the naturalist of forms. A classy sophisticated and humble spirit is all embodied in this brilliant actress and author. Bern Nadette’s place in television history has been secured not solely based on her undeniable sex appeal and good looks, but instead based on her undeniable contributions to redefining the role of the young black girl from ghettos across America in the minds of the overwhelming masses prone to stereotypic beliefs. Bern Nadette through ‘Thelma’ proved to audiences everywhere that Black girls with the support of their strong families have sky-is-the limit dreams and unshakeable faith and hope! Bern Nadette (Thelma) showed that a ‘ghetto girl’ from Chicago’s inner city projects lived a life full of hopes and dreams girded by intelligence, respect, dignity and grace, and for Bern Nadette Stanis these characteristics weren’t learned in acting class. Bern Nadette is a wonderfully trained and graceful dancer as was witnessed on many of the Good Times episodes. In everything that Bern Nadette did it was marked with beauty, form and style extraordinaire. Without question as long as there is a television, there will be a Bern Nadette Stanis across our TV screens with her dramatic, comedic, witty one liners, daintiness, sexy but innocent, and daddy’s little girl charm.

Stanis is back with a vengeance in her quest to quell apparent ‘self-esteem issues and insecurities in our young generation. Astonished by the everyday questions and persistent dogmatic relationship environment family, friends and women in general endure and sadly see as ‘the norm’ Bern Nadette was prompted to do more than have phone pow wow’s about possible resolutions. She was determined to proactively seek a forum to reach out and stop the cycle of perpetually ‘justifying’ reasons to remain in sufferable relationships. Her hope is to go beyond scraping the surface of why we tolerate what we do, but dig deeper and breach the core of self-destructive behavior in relationships. In Situations 101, Bern Nadette Stanis shares 101 relationship dilemmas that most everyone can relate to and provides sound advice and resolutions that can be easily applied to the situation. It’s a hot read about real relationships. Some of the situations are Bern Nadette’s personal encounters while others were discreetly shared by others. By the end of the book, you will have found a way to establishing and maintaining healthier relationships. The book is written in a non-intimidating manner, drawing the reader in. What unfolds next is a telling piece of work that invokes roiled anger in readers, ignites controversy, self-reflecting dialogue, and a working disbelief, as well as, empathy for those in denial. The sometimes comical and difficult to digest book is at times diplomatic, and at others, tackles responses head on, insisting we ‘get back to the basics in mastering relationships. Situations 101: Finances has a fun, yet informative way of teaching people everyday lessons when it comes to dealing money, credit and finances. With everyday situations from opening your first bank account, losing your credit cards to being a victim of a scam, this book is a must read for anyone over the age of 18. With a

classic and lighthearted style that can only be brought to you by one of America’s most beloved TV sweethearts, this book will prove itself to be an enlightening journey into the world of finances, credit, debt and so much more. “For Men Only” is a collection of poems dedicated to all of the men who have shown me “love” throughout my career! In addition to the stage acting, Stanis has “spun off” “Good Times” very well. She’s been married 28 years and has two children. Bern Nadette is the Professor in Residence at Miles College in Fairfield, Alabama. According to a news release, Stanis is working with Miles Performing Arts students through the Division of Humanities. Stanis is about to release her third book, The Last Night, based on the eight years she took care and shared her life with her mother, Eula Mae Stanislaus, while she was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, before her death in 2011. Further she founded the Remembering the Good Times Foundation, in honor of her mother. “We’re going to go out in the community and educate people about the disease, do some health seminars about it. Also tell them some things that they can look forward to as caregivers,” Stanis said. Stanis still keeps in regular touch with the “Good Times” cast. Amos came to see her perform in Behind the Pulpit two weeks ago in Washington, D.C. She says her fans ask continuously if there will ever be a sequel series to “Good Times.” She hints: “It well might be, even if I might have to right it myself.”

VIRTUOSITY –

Marriage & Divorce Principles

Fatigue Refueling for Renewed Service :

By Venus Mason Theus Fatigue can make a "nag" of anyone! Nothing goes further to make a woman less able to cope with unruly children, household or job crises and thousands of other mudane irritations. Scripture offers ways for women to reduce fatigue and avoid weariness.

24

Support from an understanding husband or close friend helps you handle pressue and stree more effectively. Knowing that someone not only knows about the burden but comes along to help you bear up under the load makes every crisis more tolerable. Women are refreshed and invigorated by being able to walk away from burdens even if it's just for a few hours. Such time for yourself can provide renewal of energies and revival of spirt and can produce creativity and stimulate productivity.

Women need to guard against over-commitment. Even good and godly pursuits must be weighed against the purposes of God. You must learn to say "no," determine to slow your frantic pace, resist the temptation to add more and more to your schedule. Busyness is not necessarily godliness. Perhaps your "R and R" should be Reprioritizing responsibilities and Rethinking free time.

Being tired is a physical affliction. Being weary, on the other hand is a spiritual attitude that results in part from blaming God for your own sinfulness. Life will never free you from fatigue, but fatigue can bring you to the point of setting aside the mundane cares of the world in order to open your heart and soul to the Lord. God can use fatigue to:

1. Cause you to look to Him for satisfaction 2. Administer correct as He pulls back His hand of strength to force you to slow down for refueling, and 3. Prepare you for a greater challenge. God has promised to satisfy the weary sould and replenish faithfully the sorrowful heart. Sometimes that means "He makes me to lie down". Physical frailties may cause you to miss earthly fun and fellowship, but spirutal resources will enable you to grow stronger on the bed of affliction. Split Second Bible Lesson: Mary and Martha

Martha's Viewpoint When we visit friends and relatives we have a good idea of how they think and act. Jesus was no different. He appreciated the differences among His three friends and felt comfortable enough to offer constructive advice as to their priorities. Martha's outlook on life was quite different from Mary's. It is possible that Martha was older and that her age figured into her personality and perspective. Martha's words and actions depict her as practical and efficient. Nothing is wrong with being practical and efficient if it doesn't interfere with the more important things in life. If it does, it can become a problem. God recorded important examples for us in Scripture (1 Corinthians 10:11), so we can learn from Martha's and Mary's recorded actions.

Mary’s Outlook "And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word" (verse 39). If one were to read no further, one could assume Mary may have been a little lazy, leaving the needs of hospitality and hostess to her gregarious sister. It was Martha who invited Jesus into their home. It was Mary who simply sat at Jesus' feet, listening to Him talk. Who was the more hospitable, the more sociable? Who was more concerned about serving her Savior, Martha or Mary? Maybe Mary was shy. But we should consider Jesus' evaluation of Mary's actions. "But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, 'Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.' And Jesus answered and said to her, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her " (Luke 10:40-42). In a nutshell, Jesus reminded Martha, the hostess-withthe-mostess, that while He appreciated all that she was doing for Him, she was missing out on things that matter most...The "good part which will not be taken away from her." The key is to value the investment of being still, taking time out to hear from God; to rest the body and to commune with those we love. ©2008 Venus Mason Theus – All Rights Reserved.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & ABUSE

Domestic Violence: Statistics & Facts from Safe Horizon

A 2003 study found that children are more likely to intervene when they witness severe violence against a parent – which can place a child at great risk for injury or even death.

The Circumstances   Domestic violence (also known as intimate partner violence) can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, income, or other factors.

The Consequences 

The Victims     

 One in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime. Women experience more than 4 million physical assaults and rapes because of their partners, and men are victims of nearly 3 million physical assaults. Women are more likely to be killed by an intimate partner than men Women ages 20 to 24 are at greatest risk of becoming victims of domestic violence. Every year, 1 in 3 women who is a victim of homicide is murdered by her current or former partner.

The Families  

26

Every year, more than 3 million children witness domestic violence in their homes. Children who live in homes where there is domestic violence also suffer abuse or neglect at high rates (30% to 60%). A 2005 Michigan study found that children exposed to domestic violence at home are more likely to have health problems, including becoming sick more often, having frequent headaches or stomachaches, and being more tired and lethargic.

Domestic violence is most likely to occur between 6 pm and 6 am. More than 60% of domestic violence incidents happen at home.

 

 

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among families. In New York City, 25% of homeless heads of household became homeless due to domestic violence. Survivors of domestic violence face high rates of depression, sleep disturbances, anxiety, flashbacks, and other emotional distress. Domestic violence contributes to poor health for many survivors. For example, chronic conditions like heart disease or gastrointestinal disorders can become more serious due to domestic violence. Among women brought to emergency rooms due to domestic violence, most were socially isolated and had fewer social and financial resources than other women not injured because of domestic violence. Without help, girls who witness domestic violence are more vulnerable to abuse as teens and adults. Without help, boys who witness domestic violence are far more likely to become abusers of their partners and/or children as adults, thus continuing the cycle of violence in the next generation. Domestic violence costs more than $37 billion a year in law enforcement involvement, legal work, medical and mental health treatment, and lost productivity at companies.

FROM THE CAFÉ’ ADMINISTRATOR

By FIRE…! By Wanda J. Burnside, Café’ Administrator

Are you at a point in your life where all you seem to have are disappointments, frustrations and suffering? Does it seem like no matter how hard you try, things just don’t turn out the way that you feel they should? You prayed and prayed, but it seems like one thing after another just keeps happening to you. You cried out to the Lord, “Why is this and that happening to me? I am seeking Your face Father! What am I to do? Things are so painful in my life. Lord, do you hear my cry? Do You care that I am going through one thing then another?” God is there! He hears your cry. Listen, listen to what He has to say. Open your heart. Wait on Him. Yes, you are in the fire. Thus, saith the Lord: “I am perfecting you. I am making you into what you must be to succeed and survive in this life. I am changing you. I am taking out all that is not pure and right. I want you to be holy. I want you to be “wholly” and completely Mine. I want you to function and operate as I have made you to be. You feel the heat of the fire. You are in the process of being changed. I have chosen you. I picked you up and brought you near the fire to be changed and purified of this world. I don’t want worldly ways in your life. I don’t want the world to come into your life and contaminate you. There must not be pollution in your spirit. You hear the crackling of the fire. This is the trouble and the problems that seemed to just pop up in your life. They are now being dealt with by the flames of My Holy fire. They are like wood. I will handle them.

It is now time to come closer to the fire. I have selected you. I picked you. I have carried you to this place. I have brought you closer. You are getting closer to Me. I need you! I want to use you. I have set you aside for My use and service. I have called you. Just like My children, the Israelites, who traveled by fire, you will too. It will be light to your path and warmth to your heart. I send the fire! I am the Master of the fire! I control its temperature. I set the gauge. I control it all. You will not burn or be consumed. I need you to be perfected for My service. I need a pure heart. I want a humble spirit. I must dwell in a clean temple. You are a holy temple. My Spirit will clean this temple! I want your life in order. I dwell in order! I deserve praise for I will make your life free from bondage. The ropes of bondage will burn off by My fire. Worship Me! “ ©2008 Wanda J. Burnside – All Rights Reserved.

CHRISTIAN EVENTS & EVANGELIST NETWORK (C.E.E. NETWORK)

A Sistah’s Grace with Tasha Cobbs

When Tasha Cobbs took the stage on June 14, 2012 at Northview Christian Church, in Montgomery, Alabama, she did so neither as a nationally renowned vocalist, nor as a recording artist making her major-label debut. Instead, with microphone in hand, she ascended the platform prepared to do what she had done every week since her teenage years---lead the congregation into worship. It is no surprise then that the result of her effort, Grace, stands as a moving example of the raw power of a live worship experience. Produced by multi-award-winning artist and producer VaShawn Mitchell, the eight-song project reveals Tasha at her best as a psalmist, songwriter, and minister. From the opening chant “Get Up” through the powerful declaration “Break Every Chain” (featuring celebrated vocalist Timiney Figueroa) to the show-stopping “Confidence,” Grace is overflowing with moments that are sure to be recreated by worship teams across the nation. A pastor’s kid and long-time worship leader, Tasha has developed her gifts as a songwriter and psalmist to become a nationally recognized minister. She currently serves as Worship Leader for the Young Adult Division of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship, while simultaneously holding the position of Worship Pastor at the dReam Center Church of Atlanta.

For the songs included on this recording, Tasha chose material of personal significance to her as well as songs from her own catalogue. “The first time I heard ‘Break Every Chain’ I listened to it all night long,” she recalls. “I have ministered it at my church a few times, and it always has the same affect---chains are broken. I have messages on Facebook and Twitter from people who have been freed as a result of the song. It releases freedom.” The upbeat, infectious “Happy” has quickly become a frequently requested, signature song for Tasha. “I have to minister that one everywhere I go,” she says. “That’s a song that I wrote about four years ago. One of my cousins called me one day and said, ‘I just wanna know if you’re happy.’ I started to think that there are things in life that would make me sad or that I don’t like, but at the core of who I am I have the joy of the Lord. That means I can command my circumstances. The attitude of the Believer is that we have the victory in everything.” With the release of Grace, Tasha Cobbs is sure to become a recognized name in churchgoing households across the nation. Despite the broader exposure, for Tasha the goal remains clear: “I know my assignment as a worship leader is to, without fail, lead God's people into His presence. A national platform only gives me a greater opportunity to fulfill that purpose.”
