Dedication: Wick Moses
Written by Amy KimberlyDedicated to Uncle Wicked!
He played in the first band to play Mountain Fair. He owned the first, and maybe only, record store on Main Street. He helped start KDNK Community Radio. He loved cats and kitties, CRMS and Carbondale. There was only one Wick Moses in this town and we have so much to thank him for. He volunteered for Mountain Fair every year and always let us know when the sound was not right. He made us laugh with
his humor, sometimes ill humor, and his Wickisms such as: “So Many Escapes - So Little Time!”, “Annoyed in Carbondale”, “HASTA
LA PASTA, BABY!”, “Cars Suck” and “Favorite Cat Daddy”. Wick moved on this year from the place he loved. Crossed over as they say, but his
spirit in this community remains strong. Especially at the fair. So wear a smile for Wick cause he’s smiling right back at us.
Carbondale Arts’ Hot Tips for the Fair and Carbondale Life In General
We embrace creativity and inspiration here so the best way to be part of this community is to let your colors shine.
1. The fair has costume themes each day and we’d love for you to join in! Friday is Animal Kingdom, Saturday is Plant and Fungi Kingdoms, and Sunday is Fantasy Kingdom.
2. Buy your t-shirts early!! You can find them in the park near the gazebo.
3. Shop early at the fair — it's cooler and quieter. The booths open at 12pm on Friday, 10am on Saturday and Sunday, and all vendors are back in Sopris Park!
4. Carbondale has many great nonprofits and organizations and getting involved with any of them can enhance your life. Meet a few of them at The Cantina this weekend and help them raise money!
5. Stop by the Carbondale Arts Silent Auction booth for good deals on items graciously donated by the featured vendors.
6. Be sure to check out the Oasis. We’re highlighting youth performers, makers, and more, plus that’s the new homebase for the singer/songwriter competition!
7. Volunteer all year long! Don’t just save it for the fair. Learn more at carbondalearts.com
8. Ride your bike as often as you can. Palisade PediCab will also be offering rides for fair folk, with Pick Up & Drop Off at the Bike Parking & Park Entrance on Weant.
9. Mountain Fair is proud of our waste diversion, only 15% of our waste goes to the landfill. Please dispose of your waste correctly at our Green Team Stations
10. See live music, dance, and make art as often as possible.

Mountain Fair Sustainability
In commemoration of the 52nd Mountain Fair, locallyowned EverGreen ZeroWaste and several amazing Green Team volunteers support Mountain Fair in responsibly diverting waste from the local landfills. The compost from the fair will be processed less than 20 miles away at the Pitkin County Compost Center. This commercial-scale operation allows the materials to be broken down into usable soil for our valley, once again completing the carbon cycle of life.
That being said, reuse is still the key to reducing our waste and lowering our environmental fair-print! If you love our Mother Earth, it is now time for all of us to take personal responsibility in keeping her healthy. REDUCING and REUSING are important steps toward a zero-waste culture. A BIG THANK YOU to Ever Green Zero Waste for supporting our Green Team efforts.
How can we all do this at Mountain Fair? Simply by using fewer single-use items such as disposable cups, plates and utensils. You can help us accomplish this by also being aware of a few Green Team protocols. REUSE by bringing your own water bottles, plates and utensils to the fair; take them home and wash them. It’s like camping! At this time, we are not reusing cups at The Cantina. REUSE MORE TO USE LESS!
• We do not sell bottled water at the fair and we have several WATER STATIONS full of clean mountain water marked with red and white water signs. Please bring your own reusable container and keep it with you.
• If you are finished with your program, please promote REUSE by leaving it at the Entrance/Exits for others to use.
COMPOSTING & RECYCLING are the next best steps you can take in being part of this solution by assisting the volunteer-powered Green Team with proper sorting at the waste stations.
• Sort your waste in the well-marked containers at our waste stations where you will find friendly volunteers. Just about anything you purchase from a food vendor goes in the green compost bins. All food scraps, utensils, plates, bowls, cups and paper products are compostable.
• ALL cups in The Cantina are COMPOSTABLE!
We thank our zero-waste community partners: EverGreen ZeroWaste, Pitkin County Compost Facility, Town of Carbondale, the Carbondale Environmental Board and YOU for being part of the Green Team! Stop by the Green Team tent to learn more!

“Considering the theme of ‘Where the Wild Things Grow,’ I worked toward a cosmic Garden of Eden concept with a goddess presiding over the affairs of man. In her hands are the building blocks of how everything in the universe grows, including representations of fire, earth, water and air. And of course this concept couldn’t be complete without a snake and apple. Huge kudos to Corey Summers and Pika Woodshop, he’s my primary collaborator and co-designer and brings my vision to life, without him it wouldn’t be possible.”
If you’re interested in purchasing one of the garden mushrooms from the stage, inquire at the Info Booth.

Vendor Liaison, Alta Otto, passes off the baton
Alta Otto has been working with Mountain Fair as our Vendor Liaison for eight years, but she’s been coming to Mountain Fair since 1979. She was just 4 months old at her first fair, and continued coming all throughout her childhood, singing with the Earthbeat Choir, volunteering to pick up trash or helping in the Oasis to earn her shirt! She took on the Pie Contest around 2011 and kept that tradition going strong, but passed the torch to her sister Carly DeBeque to become our amazing Vendor Liaison! It’s a job that requires grace, incredible organization, and excellent communication skills and Alta more than checked all of those boxes. Alta is a queen of problemsolving, industrious, positive, always kind and even-keeled. She’s been an incredible support and we will
miss her as she passes the baton to another long-time Mountain Fair-lover, Staci Dickerson! Thanks for being on our team Alta and we know you’ll be bringing your special splash of magic volunteering in another area of the fair soon!
The Rainbow Lounge
Mountain Fair welcomes the Rainbow Lounge back for another year of inclusion and community connection. The Rainbow Lounge is a safe space in the heart of mountain fair for LGBTQAI+ individuals and Allies. Information regarding the community outreach and nonprofit work of Gay For Good-Rocky Mountains, AspenOUT and other LGBTQ+ resources in the valley will be available. Additionally, the Rainbow Lounge will have children’s activities all weekend long. A new addition this year is a bilingual (english/ spanish) Drag Queen story time on Saturday at 1pm featuring Ramona Chingona and Thelma Thunderthings. All are welcome in the Rainbow Lounge and we thank their hand working team for keeping it fun, vibrant and open for everyone!
Mount Sopris above Thompson Creek Valley near Carbondale.Mountain Fair thanks KDNK for being by our side for 30+ years and live broadcasting the fair for listeners worldwide to transport themselves via airwaves into the soft grass of Sopris Park. Feel the spirit of the fair even if you cannot be with us by tuning into kdnk.org anywhere in the world. Thank you to KDNK staff for keeping the sounds of the fair alive all weekend long!
“For more than 30 of our 40 years making waves in Carbondale, KDNK has broadcast Mountain Fair live from start to finish. Tired, hot and maybe cranky? Go home, take a cold bath and relax in the shade of your favorite cottonwood … but keep your dial or device on KDNK to hear music from the Gazebo stage before you head back to Sopris Park. Or tune in to hear your friends’ and neighbors’ latest
shenanigans. Or maybe an interview with the man running for governor. Or the amusing double entendres of the women’s (and men’s) wood splitting commentators. You might hear a season’s greeting from the Mother of Mountain Fair. Or you might catch the drum circle, or the blessing that opens every fair, or a possibly tipsy pie judge describing the winning pie. Carbondale expats all over the world stream us at KDNK.org every year for the Mountain
Fair broadcast just to remember the good old days. Not only is it KDNK’s sacred duty to have fun, it’s our sacred duty to bring all that fun to you over the airwaves. Our mission is to connect community members to one another and the world. KDNK’s live broadcast of the Carbondale Mountain Fair is community radio at its best.” - Luke Nestler, former Music Director and unofficial historian, KDNK Community Access Radio.

check out the new, Somewhat practical, guide to carbondale.
Produced as part of our Creative Apprentice Program by artist Lindsay Jones and a team 6 teens, this guide is practical and poetic. Get your copy at the Carbondale Arts Artique at the Launchpad
The Creative Apprentice Program pays teens to work with a local artist to create works of community value. Projects focus on youth development by creating spaces where youth of all backgrounds are valued, supported and nurtured by giving them the tools, skills and a platform to explore the creative professions.
