HEADMASTER'S MESSAGE
Stationed before the library is the bell which has rung the coming and going of St. Martin's students from the very birth of the school at Green Acres. Ever since, it has quickened the steps of countless numbers, lest they be late. This bell has sounded the beginning of a thousand worthwhile accomplishments, and too, its ring has brought to a welcome conclusion those days when there was little cause to be proud. This vocal time piece has come to be symbolic of such things, and all that is within the covers of this book.
With each passing year, time, as is its way, blots out unpleasantries, and for each former student the old school bell will echo only pleasant memories: of the friends he had, the understanding he received, and of the things he accomplished, whether they be many or few. It will be symbolic of the many little things that linger to make a lattice of pleasant recollections which remain long after the accompanying labors and stress at the time have been forgotten.
It, too, will be reminiscent of those compelling thoughts and significant ideas which were instilled, and on occasion assimilated and taken away by the student as a part of his being.
As the years go by, the recollection ofits clang will serve to trigger a chain of these many memories which have been brought into focus so well by the very competent students and faculty sponsor who comprised the staff of this year's SHIELD. For their talent and skill, for the considerable time, and cooperative effort they contributed to make this 1958 Annual a reality, we say "thank you," for a job well done in the best St. Martin's tradition.

Prayer - the most significant act of man I In the language of praise, confession, intercession and petition, we offer our total life to almighty God. Here the scattered, often chaotic forces of human life encounter the cleansing and integrating love of our Lord. In prayer man's life finds fulfillment in participation in the life and purposes of God.

ST. MARTIN'S 19 - NEWMAN 6
The Saints displayed great effort in their first game by beating the Greenies 19-6. They showed good potential on both offense and defense. Strong running and rugged line play were the key to the Greenies defeat.
ST. MARTIN'S 21 - CHALMETTE 7
The underdog Saints once again produced a good team effort in a hard-fought and injuryridden game. The Owls put up a good fight, but came up with too little too late.
ST. MARTIN'S 7 - SACRED HEART 40
The Saints suffered their first defeat at the hands of a big Jet team which was surprisingly fast. The team got good support despite cold weather.
ST. MARTIN'S 14 - RACELAND 34
The well-coached Cubs repeatedly got off long runs which hurt the Saints. Both Saint touchdowns were on long runs.
ST. MARTIN'S 7 - BURAS 0
The Saints upset the favored Wildcats with a beautiful co-ordinated team effort. They played a great defensive game holding the Wildcats consistently. A large crowd of students cheered the Saints as they defeated a much heavier Buras team.
ST. MARTIN'S 46 - MID-CITY 0
The Saints chalked up an easy victory in completely outclassing the Pioneers for their fourth consecutive win. Using substitutes freely, the Saints ran over Mid-City 46-0.
ST. MARTIN'S 20 - COUNTRY DAY 12
The Saints combined a good aerial attack and a rugged ground game to defeat the plucky Daisies. Strong line play was one of the deciding factors in the game.
ST. MARTIN'S 26 - RIDGEWOOD 12
The classy Saints put on a fine display of football before a large Homecoming crowd. In defeating the Eagles, the Saints turned in the finest record of any St. Martin's football team. They won six and lost two.

ST. MARTIN'S 27 - RIDGEWOOD 7
Mr. Mooty's fine coaching enabled the Saints to down Ridgewood in their first game of the season. The fast and shifty Saints swept the ends to pick up valuable yardage.
ST. MARTIN'S 14 - COUNTRY DAY 0
The Saints brilliant defensive game proved to be the margin of victory in this tilt. Their fine running ability also proved to be a decisive factor.
ST. MARTIN'S 13 - ST. MARK'S 0
This made four straight for the Saints. After a perfect defensive first half, the Saints scored twice in the last quarter, to win 13-0.
ST. MARTIN'S 6 - NEWMAN 14
The Saints scored early in the first quarter, on a beautiful pass play, to lead 6-0. But, due to some bad breaks, Newman scored twice in the second quarter, to win over the hard-fighting Saints, 14-6.
ST . MARTIN'S 14 - ST . MARK'S 0
The little Saints took the St. Mark's Playground team in a very interesting game. Although outweighed in the line, the Saints went for consecutive gains, and won, going away.

The Saints' varsity ended the season of '58 with a 4- 9 Riverside League record. The Saints didn't do too well this year, but they hope to do better next season. This hope will be supported by the return of the bulk of this year's squad and the fact that good Junior varsity material is moving up to play Varsity.

The girls' volleyball teams completed a rather unsuccessful season, in which they played Newman, McGehee, and Country Day. Coi:trary to popular belief, both the "A" and "B" teams won at least one game. The "A" team improved considerably as the season progressed, only to finish the season with its worst effort One of the best games was against a powerful Country Day team, although Country Day won, 14-8. The "B" team played several excellent games, and was aided tremendously by some fabulous serving.
January 7, 195 8 opened the season of the Girls' Basketball teams. In spite of the combined efforts of Marshall Alford, Mary Sue Cairns, Spruill Kilgore, and Barbara Mayo, the "A" team barely lost by a score of 23-1 7 to Country Day. The "B" team fared better and won by a score of 17-16. Betty Calvert played an outstanding game for the "B's."
Th e "A" team lost its second game by a score of 17-13 to McGehee. The "B" team played a good defensive game and won a 2114 victory over the st rong opponents.
BASIKETBAL L
The St. Martin's squads met Country Day again. The "A" team lost by a score of 2821 even though we had a good team play. The "B" team did better, winning by two points. The final score was 19-17.
St. Martin's again met McGehee, but this time, both teams suffered defeat s Both Saint teams played excellent games, and truly deserved to win, but the "A" team lost 23-20, and the "B's" fell for the first time 33-22.
For the first time a St. Martin's squad has won a c hampionship in Girls' Basketball. The "B's" a c hieved this by compiling a 3-1 season record.

Each year a Junior boy and a Junior girl are selected to attend Boys' State and Girls' State, which are held in the summer. There are representatives from almost every high school in Louisiana. At these conven tions, elections are held, and the delegates elect an honorary governor, lieutenant governor, and other State officials. They organize a government comparable to our State government, by appoindng heads of departments, committees, and co uncils. These different divisions discuss problems and attempt to solve them.

Christmas celebration at school this ye~r was done in a manner which we think will develop into tradition. The plan was originated by the student council and approved by the student body. It consisted of skits by each elementary grade and a Christmas play, "Kings of Judea," presented by the upper school. This was followed by a banquet in the cafeteria and a faculty skit. At the close of the evening, there was a candlelight service in the chapel with Christmas music furnished by the chorus. Student committees were in charge of the different aspects of the program. All agreed that it was a big success.
St. Martin's Mothers' Club sponsors an annual Book Week. Funds raised by the sale of books are given to our library to purchase additional reading material. It is a chance for students and parents alike to choose books for gifts and their own personal use, while helping to build up our library.
BOARD DINNER
This year, the annual Parents-Board Dinner was h e ld in the gym on the 22 nd of May. There were about 450 parents, teachers, and the honored guests, the Seniors. The graduating class and the board members were introduced. The Mothers' and Dads' Clubs gave their yearly report. The Board reported on the activities and budget of the Board. The highlight of the night was the presentation of a memorial to the O. E. Harings for the interest they have shown in the school since its beginning.
