Thank you for your support so far! Whether this is your first time reading, or you have a full collection of our magazines sitting on your bookshelf, we thought we’d give you a little reminder of what STONES is all about. STONES magazine, is brought to you by local Design and Marketing agency, Sanders + Jay, where we set out with a mission - to showcase the best of where we live. Having been fortunate enough to have a lot of existing local relationships through our services of Web Design, Branding, and Marketing, we wanted to provide a platform to showcase their products or services and support local businesses. Since launching the magazine, we have been taken aback by so many entrepreneurs and companies who are located within our community and we have been proud to support their journey.

From people to places and everything in between, we carefully select organisations and individuals then bring them to life with fun and engaging content, where we maintain control of the visual throughout. This ensures that we continue to deliver a high-end lifestyle publication. Our reach is getting bigger and bigger where we are now delivering beyond Royston and the surrounding villages and starting to distribute further afield in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire such as Buntingford, Baldock, Cambridge and Sawston. In addition, we are super excited that along with our magazine, our team keeps on growing and growing, and we have some exciting content to bring to you over the coming weeks that will supplement our work in print. If you have a business or service and you want to tell your story, get in touch to discuss how we can work together on bringing it to life.

f o o t b a l l Simone is the beating heart of the Royston Football Club family. She holds the position of Youth Club Secretary as well as providing support across a number of areas in the club such as fundraising and tournament committees. She has endless energy and passion for the club and it comes across in everything she does for them. From the moment the kids join the club, from aged 3 in Mini Crows, which was set up by Simone and others; they are greeted with enthusiasm, support and most importantly, the opportunity to have fun. Simone’s many contributions extend to the wider district where she also holds the role of league secretary alongside four other people, for the various leagues the club plays in.

“I am very passionate about the game and the development of the kids and it’s amazing to see so many children come through our club’s programme. A lot of work goes into putting on so many games across all age groups every weekend. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the contributing volunteers that make it all possible. I have had the pleasure of watching all of my own children play for Royston, where they are all still active in the game at (U16, U10, U8), my eldest has played through all ages groups. I would encourage any parents looking to keep their kids active and make friends to get in touch with the club and become part of our growing community.”

community Neil became involved with Royston Town FC in 2018 after responding to a request from the club looking for someone to help with their social media accounts. Being a football fan, living locally and having worked in marketing and social media for a number of years Neil stepped in to help the club. Since then, over the last 4 seasons, Neil has been working on extending and improving the club’s web presence, social media output and other marketing activities. “We’ve seen great growth in our follower numbers and more importantly our engagement with our supporters and followers. Royston Town is a Club that has the town and surrounding areas at its heart. We are committed to making the club something that the town can be proud of both on the field and off it. We are now competing at Step 3 of the non-

league pyramid, the highest level the club has ever played at, have a successful Women’s team, an exciting U18s side and work closely with Royston Town Youth. We now want our interaction with the community outside of football to match that progression. Our position in the hearts and minds of our community was demonstrated during the pandemic. The club lost pretty much every revenue stream when lockdown was enforced, and we had to resort to a crowdfunding campaign to help ‘Keep The Crows Flying’. The Royston community really pulled together, and it was brilliant and so inspiring to witness. As a club we were truly blown away by the support and encouragement from everybody associated with the Club. The generosity of our supporters and sponsors in those times of uncertainty was truly amazing and helped us raise over £25,000.

The wonderful combination of ‘breakfast’ and ‘lunch’ known as brunch. Eaten in the late morning or early afternoon, generally between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm, offers a gentle fulfilling way to start the day. Brunch represents more than just a trend. It represents a social experience, an excuse to sleep in, give yourself a bit more time to build up a hearty appetite and spend time conversing with friends, family and loved ones. We, as humans are naturally social creatures who crave social interaction and brunch provides the perfect opportunity for a scheduled face to face debrief on our chaotic lives. You can catch up on the night before, discuss family politics or whisper sweet nothings to your loved ones. The bottom line is that due to the relaxed attitude of this meal, it means you can take as long as you want to eat and drink, dress relaxed and chat to your heart’s content. Surely no weekend is complete without a stunning plate of perfectly cooked eggs, aromatic coffee, and the occasional glass of Prosecco to ease your way into the day.

The space has a perfectly balanced mixture of modern and historic, where light floods in through the original exterior façade onto the famous guest faces mounted on the wall. Since its inception, The Cambridge Union has played host to some of the most incredible guests including Bill Gates, Emma Thompson, Chris Eubank and Cambridge local; Stephen Fry The menu, led by Head chef Ben Pope uses fresh, locally sourced ingredients and comprises a host of classics with a twist. Grass roots football is thriving in our local community. With kids taking to the pitch in abundance, which is great news for the future of our national game and encouraging to see after the recent pandemic. With over 600 children and 41 teams across under 7 to under 16 boys and girls in Royston and thousands more in the wider county of Hertfordshire and Cambridgshire. It is quite remarkable, and we should be very proud of the organisations and facilities which support our beloved football. Not fuelled by money or greed, but ‘by a’ love of the game, thrill of competing and playing with friends, football can be incredibly powerful.

There are so many advantages to playing in a team sport from a young age which can benefit children, without them even noticing, both mentally and physically. Along the journey, as they pass through the age groups, they will hone in on their skills, make friends, develop their competitiveness, improve physically fitness and in some cases, keep out of trouble. In this modern world we are very much challenged with the over consumption of tablets and TV so it’s great to see our kids of the future taking to the pitch once again, expressing themselves with skill and determination in a positive light.

Without volunteers, the sport would be nothing. Parents give up their time in the week to train, coach, officiate and spend countless hours pacing the touch lines to fulfil the ambition and dreams of these young players. A football club is about so more than just the players on the pitch. There are

many roles required to make it to game day, such as chairperson’s, secretaries, treasurers all the way to welfare officers. All in order to assist the league and to help the club operate effectively. Volunteers make up the backbone of our game, so we stand up salute you.

As with many non-league clubs, volunteers are the lifeblood of their clubs. Without them, most non-league football clubs would struggle to function. For many the game can be at risk of fizzling out, but for some the game goes on, where they try to fulfil their youthful promise and climb the pyramid as high as they can go. Whilst some may not make it to the very top, non-league football has become increasingly popular, with crowds exploding since being allowed back into grounds. We caught up with Neil Community Manager, to find out how Royston Town have benefited from the recent support. “As with many non-league clubs, volunteers are the lifeblood of their clubs. Without them, most non-league football clubs would struggle to function. At Royston Town, we have a great group of committed volunteers and I’m proud to be one of them. Every one of our volunteers contributes something to the running of the Crows.” Royston towns success has united the local community as they have charged through the leagues and enjoyed recent cup victories, however the relationship from the grass roots to men’s and women’s first team is the real victory. Previously fractured teams across the area run in silo’s (all be it with individual success) have been united to provide an excellent platform for development and progression. This model has been adopted across many neighbouring towns such as Hitchen, Ware and beyond and the future of the game is in good hands. With multiple initiative such as the government recently pledging to launch one hundred and sixteen projects across England to create and improve pitches, changing rooms and pavilions, so that more local communities can access high-quality facilities.

Men’s grooming has moved from fringe to mainstream culture over recent years, where guys continue to embrace a regular routine of maintenance to look and feel their best and there are no signs of slowing down. With perfectly presented sports stars, super celebrities and social media driving body ideals, the average man is indulging in a little tlc, so we have taken a look at the art of grooming and where to invest your time.

S TON E S

P L AC E S

First things first, keep it simple. Avoid low-level radiation glow at all costs, and try entering a regular routine of maintenance, where you invest in a few good products and a healthy lifestyle. Be understated, yet sharp. As with many things in this life, less is more when it comes to grooming and you don’t want to overdo it.

UR BEST

By investing in regular trips to the barber’s chair, you can become proactive, as opposed to reactive. Whilst a monthly trim may keep the fuzz at bay, you may benefit from a little more attention and ensure you don’t enter the hat phase. Some people that are keen to maintain their sharp appearance make tri-weekly, or even fortnightly visits to ensure they stay looking at the top of their game.

We believe that detail makes the difference as there are fine lines between excellence and average. Carlo - Carlo & Co. Barbers

Manage your facial fuzz From the 5 o’clock shadow to Verdi beard look, there is a style for every modern man to embrace. In recent years, beards have surpassed trend status to become a regular fixture whether you are a high-level office worker or design agency creative. But you can’t have great-looking facial hair without a proper beard maintenance plan in place. Beard maintenance will have to be a part of your daily schedule. Caring for your beard will probably include trips to your barber and a few shopping expenses for things like brushes, beard oils, beard shampoos and moisturisers. Failure to plan and implement will result in fuzzy failure. Face

Unclogging your face of nasties from your daily grind is a good place to start, where you can indulge in a good scrub down to remove dirt and grime before bedtime. Accompanied by a moisturising routine will avoid dry and tired skin. Your face is more exposed to the elements than any other part of your body, so it is important to protect your face from sun damage and related skin risks. Do your research, read up on the benefits and work through a trial-and-error phase to find the right fit for your skin. Keep on your toes We all know that exercise is important in our daily lives, but you must make the time to keep in shape and feeling great. Staying active will allow you to move more easily, avoid injury, feel better physically, and boost your self-esteem. The health benefits of regular exercise and physical activity are hard to ignore. Everyone benefits from exercise, regardless of age, sex or physical ability. Regular exercise will help you maintain your health, strength, flexibility, balance, and co-ordination.

Julianne greeted me to discuss my treatment, the formalities of the pre questionnaire and then led me through to the treatment room, walking past the breathtaking views of the fields and courtyard space.

Explaining the treatment; an Elemental Herbology Facial, what would be involved, what my skin was like and any areas I was concerned about. I am then left to change and lay down on the heated bed. Julianne quietly gets me to exhale and breathe out the stresses of the day. To forget I am a mum, wife, business owner… and quieten the noise. Although I’m partial to a deep tissue back massage, foregoing the option of a facial in favour of my go to massage, this was actually only my second facial. I was intrigued to find out how I would find the experience over my favourable back massage, and I wasn’t disappointed. The experience is in fact just as good. I thoroughly enjoyed the exfoliation and scrub, and the soothing of the face mask. I was also delighted that the Elemental Herbology Facial includes a neck, shoulder and head massage, perfect for my stress points. Whilst relaxing with the face mask, you also have a foot or hand massage, with the foot massage recommended for maximum benefits. I was apprehensive about this, as I am known for my tickly feet! However this was my first ever foot massage where I didn’t flinch at all. Just the right amount of pressure and relaxing ambience, it really was a truly theraputic experience. And then the finale; the blinds go up and I am elevated on the electric chair to an inclined sitting position to open my eyes to the most amazing view of fields and a glass of refreshing water with a slice of lemon. I was reassuringly told to take my time to come round and get up. I felt utterly relaxed and content, stress free and inspired by the beautiful view. My skin feels glowing and moisturised, supple and replenished with vitamins and vitality. If this is the secret to younger looking skin, then sign me up weekly!

Full body massage While I am normally happy to stick to the basic massage, I decided to go out of my comfort zone and experience a new massage treatment; Elemental Herbology Five Element Aroma Massage to relax, revive and rejuvenate…sign me up! Having been advised to arrive early, I was typically ahead of schedule. While I am usually rushing from pillar to post on a daily basis, I wanted to give myself the full opportunity to relax and take in the experience. On arrival, I was greeted with a warm welcome and a detailed questionnaire to gain insight into my mind-space. By

better understanding my personality traits, likes, dislikes and even my mood, they were able to customise my experience to tailor my experience- down the carefully selected oils that were used. The massage began with slow, deep breaths. Inhaling the scent of the oils, I began to feel the tension melt already, before a traditional massage technique on my back and shoulders, followed by heated stones and finally, fast movements using her forearms to create a nice sensation of warmth. I now understand this was to rejuvenate my body and improve my circulation.

S TON E S

Quickly from high levels of tension and stress, I had been transfixed into a tranquil state of relaxation, allowing myself to be present in the moment - a very rare occurrence! The massage then travelled to my lower back, where I hold a lot more tension; aches and pains from the day-to-day activities ranging from sitting for long periods of time at work, and more pleasantly from lifting my little ones. The massage then moved onto the back of my arms, legs and feet. Already in a deeply calm state, I turned over and they got to work on the front of my legs, arms, top of the chest and shoulders. By the end of the massage my whole body felt so relaxed, the tension had melted away and my mind was refreshingly clear. I came around slowly, sat up with a glass of water, collected my thoughts and felt in a much better place than before I entered. In my opinion, a massage is a fundamental self-care treatment. A little luxury goes a long way to support your wellbeing and mental health, I would highly recommend.

FOOD FOR THE SOUL Why do we eat? When I was a young girl, I often asked myself this. I was struck at how much our food intake is not due to hunger, but for other reasons. Comfort. Anxiety. Habit. The desire to be social or even to please. I have to admit, I found this unsettling and confusing: I was recovering from some unhealthy eating patterns at that time and craved a way to eat “right”.

connected to a particular emotion, as well as having a certain impact on one’s energy. Matching food to the health, constitution and emotional needs of a person is a very developed art. The five basic tastes are connected to the Five elements, and each of these in turn is connected to an internal organ system as well as an emotional or mental state.

My attitude to food has changed and deepened since I did a Masters of Science degree in Chinese Medicine, to pursue acupuncture. Chinese Medicine has allowed me to look with respect and understanding at the fact that food does, and is meant to, feed our emotions as well as bodies.

For instance, sweet is the taste of the Earth element and the SpleenPancreas system, which combines functions of digestion, immune function and muscle health. (If you are wondering how such diverse functions can be considered one system, briefly ponder the link between insulin production, glucose metabolism and energy production within a muscle, or gut health and the immune system). If you had the experience of craving sweets when studying for an exam or trying to meet an urgent deadline, this is because our intellect, Yi, is also fuelled by the sweet taste. Moreover, Earth is the centering, mothering element: sweet taste is like giving yourself an internal hug.

Somewhere in the past few decades, eating - or the reasons for eating became a moral issue. We are quick to label food as “good” or “bad”, and a day when we stick to a diet as “good”. Emotional eating is seen as a weakness by some, and as something akin to sin by others. Yet, food and the soul have been connected for as long as mothers lovingly put infants to their breast. We even use phrases that link them together: food for soul, gut feeling. We are hard-wired to show love and friendship by offering food, to bond over food, and to find comfort in food. Enter Chinese Medicine and its fabulous blueprint for marrying the tangible and intangible effects food has on us. Each taste is seen as

To give another example, salt is related to the element of Water – unsurprising, when we consider its effect on water metabolism. It connects to the Kidney-Adrenal system. The emotion that relates to Water is fear, while on a spiritual level, it relates to willpower and the wisdom that comes from experience. Eating salty flavoured foods can make us feel more grounded and more confident in our immediate reality.

The implications of such understanding of food are huge. Firstly, eating is not a one way system, where the ideal to aim for is mindover-matter control. So please, do not ever feel guilty or remorseful about your food choices! That guilt makes us more sick than the worst food we eat. Instead, let’s look at our relationship with food as an important feedback from the mind and the body. Cravings, excessive appetite or lack of appetite all have a reason. Observation and acceptance are always the first steps to healing. If you had a hard day, it is absolutely fine to crave something comforting. Honour what your body is telling you. This does not mean devouring a full box of chocolates or crisps every time, however; it might mean brainstorming healthy ways to meet your body-and-soul needs, both with food and beyond, and possibly getting treatment to balance certain structures, for example, acupuncture for calming the mind, digestive fire or adrenal fatigue. I often analyse my client’s diet as an acupuncturist and we work together in a gentle and creative way to find options which are healthy and satisfying for their emotional needs. Meanwhile, go enjoy that meal with your loved ones, a drink with your friends, or indulge alone in a culinary experience. When you are mindful, so the food will feed your body while the joy will feed your heart.

SEE ASIA DIFFERENTLY What is the perfect holiday to you? Is it about relaxation and rejuvenation on a white sandy beach with a cocktail in hand? Or discovering the culture, history, and traditions; unearthing the true secrets of a country? How about something more active and adventurous, such as exploring remoter areas on a quad bike and getting back to nature. Perhaps you’re looking for destination for all the family, giving you a balance between activities, downtime and fun experiences for children and adults alike. Or do you just simply want a mixture of everything? Whatever the type of holiday you’re looking for; we believe that South-East Asia has it all and more!

The must visit places in our eyes are: • Exploring the temples of Angkor Wat like an Angelina Jolie tomb raider. • Unwinding on a traditional Junk boat and discovering the stunning sights of Ha Long Bay. • Trekking in the jungle and bathing with elephants in Ratanakiri and Monulkkiri. • Island hopping around Flores and having an encounter with ancient Komodo Dragons or taking some time out on the white sandy beaches on Koh Rong Samloem.

South-East Asia has something for everyone; even for those that don’t even know what they are looking for. We promise that the sights, sounds, smells and most importantly the smiles and friendly people of the region will capture your heart as it did for us.

Any of these, or any adventure that you can dream of, can be tailored just for you and within your travel budget. As we put ourselves in your shoes, with your interests and then craft something exceptional with our local knowledge and experience of living in the region. Meaning you can have the holiday you want without costing the earth.

Those who do visit for the first time will always return for more. More of the most stunning sunsets of anywhere in the world, more of the most incredible and varied food from well-known dishes like Pad Thai and Indonesian Nasi Goreng to the lesser known Cambodian Lok-Lak (beef in a tasty tomato sauce with rice a fried egg and a tomato, onion, lettuce garnish) my daughter’s absolute favourite. More of the most varied experiences there are to see and do than anywhere else in the world. But more importantly than all of these, more of the most incredibly friendly and wonderful people you will ever meet.

Unfortunately with what is going on in the world right now, flight prices are set to rise. However, if you are to offset this cost against what you would usually additionally spend on going out etc… then this all completely evens out. There are not many places in the world where you can get a $1 beer with peanuts as a side or a $2.50 cocktail (with generous measures) and then grab a bowl of delicious Pho (Vietnamese noodle soup) for less than a dollar. It just makes mealtimes and going out that much more relaxed and enjoyable; when you know you can order anything on the menu and drink what you want without worrying about the bill at the end of the night.

With the increased relaxation of travel you may want to start considering a getaway to Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, or Indonesia before the English summer begins or plan for next winter.

Anyway don’t take just take our word for it as we are completely bias and love everything about SouthEast Asia and we can’t wait to get back. Simply ask anyone who has travelled here, and we promise that they will have the same wonderful stories to tell. After that there is then no excuse whatsoever of not getting in touch and coming to see for yourselves.

I am the owner of the independent travel company See Asia Differently. Specialising in holidays and experiences to Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam. 07939 206 599 peter@SeeAsiaDifferently.com www.SeeAsiaDifferently.com

ALTERNATIVE / 2000 / 11 TRACKS / 46MINS

With his seventh studio album, Simon Green, the man behind the stage name Bonobo delivers another outstanding array of downtempo, chiiled electronic beats mixed with some stunning vocals from the likes of Jordn Rakie and Jamila Woods. If you are alraedy a fan then this will add to your discography of his, if you are new to Bonobo then this is a great place to start your journey into the dj’s growing catalouge of chillout tunes. Poor yourself your favourite drink and simply sit bake and relax.

Foo Fighters third studio album and first with the late, great Taylor Hawkins, is one of the bands best. After forming the band and touring non-stop, recording a second album and band menbers coming and going, this album was recorded in the basement of Dave Grohls house and made as a newly formed trio, with Nate on bass, Taylor on drums and Dave on lead vocal and guitar. With hits such as ‘Learn to Fly’ and ‘Breakout’ to some classic tracks like ‘Next Year’ and ‘MIA’ this is Foo’s at there best and purest form.
