Stotfold Citizens Awarded
The beginning of March saw The Stotfold Town Council AGM being held for 2022. During this meeting two local residents were recognised for their service to our community by being awarded Stotfold Citizens Awards for 2022. Chris Hall, a fairly new resident to the town was recognised for his work within Stotfold regularly tidying and disposing of rubbish from the Stotfold countryside. Chris has taken it upon himself over the last few years to supply many local residents with litter picking equipment and has become a well known face among local walkers as he can be found most days, helping to keep our town tidy and clean. Chris thoroughly enjoys getting out and about and has made many new friends through his litter picking. Chris was recognised for going over and above for our community and for helping to encourage other local residents to help keep Stotfold tidy. Mollie Jennings was nominated for this award for her service of over 60 years to England outdoor bowls and more specifically her commitment to Stotfold Bowls Club. As you will have read in the opposite article, Mollie has spent many, many years fundraising and holding various positions within the club and received a special award of recognition from England Bowls for her achievements.

Mollie Jennings also receiving her Stotfold Citizen Award 2022.

Your Letters Dear Editor, I would like to thank all members and friends of Stotfold Bowls Club for the recent reception at the Club held in celebration of my being awarded Certificate of Merit by Bowls England. Your gifts and kind words were overwhelming and the entire evening was memorable. I have loved working for the Club it has been a big part of my life for 60 years and thank my family and members past and present for their unwavering help and support.
CLAIRE’S CAT SITTING
BUT - As if the above accolade was not enough a few days later I received a letter from our Town Clerk inviting me to attend the forthcoming AGM of the Town Council as I had Stotfold based been nominated for the Citizens Award 2022. So, with the feeling that all this could not cat sitting servicebe true. be true, I with my friends attended the meeting on 7th March in the Greenacre Centre Now in our 10th year! when I was presented with the Award by the Mayor of S.T.C. I can only say that to receive not one by two prestigious awards in such a short time is unbelievable and I feel very honoured as I know that there are others in the village who have worked just as hard for their Club and the community as I have, non-the-less I am very happy to receive them! Thanks once again to the members of Stotfold Bowls Club and the Town Council. Mollie Jennings. Dear Editor, I’m researching for a book about a young, highly-talented pianist called Win Marshall whose studies were interrupted by WWII. She was called up in 1941 and served as an auxiliary nurse at Three Counties Emergency Hospital in Arlesey. In October 1941 she gave a concert for the troops and in November 1941 helped produce a play in aid of the Russian Red Cross. I’d be very grateful if any of your readers could suggest where I might find any information about these events. I can be emailed on jrushpc@gmail.com or DM me on Facebook. Jonathan Rush

Dear Editor, After the buzz of Christmas and the New Year celebrations, the months of January and February are always a bit flat for many of our older residents. Bearing that in mind, the Academy of Central Bedfordshire and the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group decided to do something to cheer people up, hence together we provided a lunch for over 40 people on Tuesday 8th February 2022. Delicious savories, soup and sandwiches followed by fruit salad or cakes was prepared by the students of ACB and served to clients of the Good Neighbour Group. It was an excellent lunch filled with lots of chat and laughter. The atmosphere was so friendly and uplifting as old friends caught up with one another. It was a most enjoyable time and those with mobility problems were transported to and from St. Marys Church Hall. Thanks to Jo Martin and the the excellent students for such a lovely time and all who helped on the day. A donation of £100. was made to the school's chosen charity ‘Retina UK'. Christine Bunting. - on behalf of SGNG Dear Editor, We would like to thank and commend Andy Brown & Sean from AJB Fencing, for their swift response to an urgent call-out as a result of recent storm damage. The prompt action was greatly appreciated. For their professionalism, skill in their field and quality of work, together with courtesy and consideration, you would have to go a long way to find their equal. Thank you both, A very satisfied customer & Stotfold News Magazine reader. www.stotfoldandarleseynews.co.uk

Your Letters Dear Editor, Further to the letter in your previous issue with regards to our dog Dotti, we thought we would supply readers with a bit more information on her and help publicise her story further..Dottie is from Romania and was found on the side of a road by one of the stray2me rescuers. She had a spinal injury and was unable to use her back legs which she had to drag behind her and as a result had terrible sores on them. It's not certain whether her injury was done deliberately or whether she had been hit by a car. The local people wanted to put Dotti down but fortunately stray2me were able to step in and help her. Because of her spinal injury she would not be able to recover the use of her back legs and so these were amputated separately by the vet in order to give Dotti a better standard of life. Dotti was going into foster in England and travelled via van from Romania with other dogs and cats on their way to their new homes. After 3 days and 6 countries Dotti arrived. Dotti settled in very well, she requires regular cleaning and bathing and wears nappies during the day and a drag bag to protect her. Dotti is incredibly sweet and affectionate and received quite a few applications for adoption. We were thrilled to take her home. You can follow Dotti on Facebook under "Dotti dog" @2paws2wheels. Stray2me rescue helps dogs in Romania find forever homes in the UK. The charity offers continued support for the life of the dog or cat. Mrs E Morrison

Acknowledgement - Roy Beale
The family of Roy would like to thank everyone for their messages of support, flowers, cards and tributes following their sad loss at the end of February. Thank you to everyone who came along to Roy’s funeral, it was a great comfort and the family have been overwhelmed and so grateful for the support they have received. Roy would have been amazed.
Stotfold born Roy, will be a familiar face to many people as together with his brother Roger they served the community for over 30 years at Beale Bros Butchers on Regent Street. A familiar face in the town, Roy was an active member of Stotfold Bowls Club and was an enthusiastic team member - enjoying the social side to the club as well! Roy was also a trustee of Stotfold Conservative Club and during that time a members bar was opened, something Roy had always wanted to happen. Roy will be much missed by his family and large circle of friends.

Fairfield Lower School
This last month has been filled with opportunities for the children at Fairfield Park Lower School to experience a broad curriculum – we started this term with a poetry recital competition, with Nursery performing nursery rhymes to our Reception to Year 4 children learning poems by heart and some even penning their own poems to perform! We also had the chance to recognise the special ladies in the lives of our Year 4 children by putting on an afternoon tea with delicious cakes and time to connect and have fun. Classrooms have been busy with children being immersed in topics, such as Year 4 learning about Greeks and participating in their own Ancient Greek Olympics and Year 3 enjoyed sampling traditional French foods and learning about key landmarks and areas in France. Our Year 1 children got to step back in time and explore how toys have developed over the last century, participating in a Toy Workshop where they became toy experts in a toy museum and also invented their own original toy. The term was brought to a close with “Grounds Week”, a special whole, school project week that enables us to focus on a wider aspect of our bespoke curriculum – the environment. We also say goodbye to a long-standing member of the leadership team, Mrs Jayne Bradley, Deputy Headteacher. Mrs Bradley retires after 14 years at Fairfield Park. She will be missed by many and her legacy will live on. We wish her all the best for the future. Did you know? Children are eligible for a place in our nursery class the term Established 2010 after they turn 3. Leading up to half term we were delighted to see so many of our students rewarded with praise texts, epraise points and individuals achieving ‘Legends of the week’ in department areas. The children have really positive attitudes to their learning and this is particularly pleasing after so much disruption in the past two years. Our Juniors have been designing the most fantastic gardens for Cala Homes showhome garden competition and we are just awaiting news of the winners. In their designs there was no expense spared with pergolas, water features, bird tables, bee nest boxes and raised beds. We are really looking forward to seeing the winning garden created in time for the opening of their showhome. Mrs Denton has been leading on LGBTQ+ History Month. Students have been learning more about the history and culture of LGBTQ+ in assemblies and participating in a quiz. Mr Bodger has made the news for supporting the community on the crossing located outside Etonbury to help not just our own students but other members of the community to safely cross for the sports centre and bus stop. A big thank you from all of us at Etonbury for going above and beyond. During the half term break the school remained open for contractors and our site team to work on further improvements for the school including redecorating our main hall and installing new stage curtains, new lighting and painting toilets across the school. Lessons, clubs and our performance rehearsals have resumed. Year 5 has been looking at computer coding and building an electronic music band, their knowledge of technology at such a young age is quite amazing. We have been delighted by the number of students enrolled for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme , you may have seen some of them volunteering in the community and developing their chosen skills. Our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine, and we have been joining the local communities by collecting much needed items for The NEED Project who are so kindly co-ordinating the transport to get these to Poland. Our DT department has also been raising funds by making beautiful sunflower earrings and selling them in support of this crisis. Etonbury Academy, Stotfold Road, Arlesey, Beds. T: 01462 730391

News from Roecroft
Lower School
How wonderful it has been to watch Spring arrive, daffodils have been blooming all over the school grounds and certainly do add a pop of colour. March was a busy month in school with staff and children enjoying some missed events from the last two years. World Book Day was a huge hit; staff all dressed as various members of the Where’s Wally family, much to the children’s delight. We also enjoyed the Roecroft Masked Reader, staff changed their voices and wore a mask to record popular stories whilst the children had a guess at who was behind the mask. Red Nose Day was a sea of red across the building, we raised money in a number of ways, one being a huge copper haul where each class competed to find the most loose change at home for an always-desirable prize of class non-uniform day. Please do enjoy an update from Miss Emmerson, our Key Stage 1 phase leader.
Key Stage 1 Update: Over the spring term, KS1 have been super busy with their new topics of learning. Year 1 have been focusing on the theme 'A Knight's Tale' and have been thoroughly enjoying the story 'How to Catch a Dragon'. The children made predictions about how the dragons could be caught and then retold the story in groups with some very expressive actions! Within this topic, the children also took part in a history-based day to explore castles. This included carrying out research, looking at castle features and then creating their own castle model. In Year 2, their learning has been based upon the topic 'Kings and Queens' and the children have learnt about the history of some of our most famous monarchs. Roecroft welcomed an external drama company in for the day. All classes dressed up as Tudors and took part in an immersive history day to find out about aspects of Tudor life. Now the end of term is approaching, I am sure the children are all excited to take home their Easter egg cards that they have been working hard to make and perhaps take part in some Easter egg hunts with their friends and families. I know we are also looking forward to the summer events across year 1 and 2 such as school trips and we cannot wait for some much-needed sunshine! Wishing you all an April filled with sunshine, Mrs Cross
Community Governor Vacancies
Roecroft Lower School in Stotfold are looking for two supportive volunteers to fulfil the role of Community Governors in our team. Community governors help to bring balance and diversity of knowledge to governing bodies. It is a fantastic way to give something back to the community, making a real difference in influencing the standard of education delivered in Stotfold.
Governing bodies provide strategic leadership in schools and are accountable for; 1) Ensuring clarity of vision and ethos, 2) Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school/pupils, 3) Overseeing the financial performance of the school, 4) Ensuring the voices of stakeholders are heard. Some of the ways we achieve this includes participating in Governing Body meetings (twice termly), engaging with the school through governor visits, and contributing to sub-committees where you have aligned skills/interests. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who has: • A desire to contribute to and represent the community • An enquiring mind, with an ability to look at issues objectively/ make informed judgements • The ability to work as part of a team
Experience in school governance, working in a primary school, or fulfilling any leadership role would be advantageous.
What we can offer: • Development of skills in strategic management and experience in working at board level • Training to develop an understanding of specific school issues • A sense of achievement in making a difference to our school, its pupils and Stotfold
You will be joining an established Governing Body, supported by fellow governors with many years of combined experience. If you are interested in the role of Community Governor, please contact the Chair of Governors, Arlene Hui (governors@roecroft.co.uk) by 29th April 2022. Note: In accordance with our Safer Recruitment policy, all governors must provide two personal references and agree to complete Disclosure and Barring Service checks prior to appointment. 12

Pix Brook Academy
As we approach the end of the new half term we are already more than half way through the academic year. It’s been amazing and busy in equal measure and while one national crisis in the form of the Pandemic is beginning to recede it is dreadful that circumstances in Eastern Europe are so worrying. I know many young people are understandably concerned about these events and we are working with the children to try to help them understand what this means for them and also to appreciate how lucky we are to be living where we do. As a school we have offered our support to the people of Ukraine and as such have contacted the Need Project to see what we might do to help. They are currently engaged in providing resources to the people of Ukraine in the form of children’s clothing; nappies; wipes; toiletries and clean bedding. Our parent body responded magnificently to this appeal.
The last couple of weeks have been really busy for all, but in particular our year 6 pupils who have completed a full round of mock SATs exams. As you would expect pupils have responded magnificently. We took the opportunity to make use of the top floor of the building enabling a large number of rooms to be used. All available staff were used to support the pupils providing many rooms with a small number of pupils in each. We are obviously working hard with this year group including Wellbeing lessons; cooking; Pilates; revision strategies and brain food. We know this can be a nerve-wracking time for young people and as such we have tried to make things as normal as possible. There is much to learn from this process and we will make sure we do so over the next two months of preparation.
Headteacher Mr Adams overseeing donations to the Need Project.
In addition to these extra challenges we have been lucky enough to have the “Saxon” experience, we have also been benefiting from the Happy Puzzle Company that are working with pupils focusing on resilience, teamwork and perseverance. Finally March saw us immerse ourselves in World book day where the curriculum was collapsed for a whole day and activities were built around some fantastic literature and our fully collapsed timetable enabling all pupils to engage in Science week. Great thanks must go to so many of our parents who were prepared to give up their time to teach our pupils about their jobs. As so often I am genuinely delighted and flabbergasted by our parents generosity.

News from Pippin
Pre School
We enjoyed welcoming back all our children last month and began March celebrating World Book Day. We wish to thank all our parents and staff for wearing fantastic costumes to celebrate the event. We were delighted with the safe arrival of our ducklings!! They arrived in their incubabtor and hatched during their first 36 hours. The children held them and watched excitedly as they took their first swim, this has been a lovely experience for children (and staff) which we hope to do again next year. As in previous years the duckings will be rehomed in a small holding in Royston.
We supported Comic Relief on 18th March, children came to Pippin wearing red. We wish to Staff and children enjoy Book Day! thank all our families and staff for supporting this event and helping us raise money for this fantastic charity. Due to our charitable status we are registered as one of Amazon’s supporters. Please visit smile.amazon and register Pippin Playgroup as your chosen charity. AmazonSmile is available at smile.amazon.co.uk on your web browser and can be activated in the Amazon Shopping App for iOS and Android phones.

Poppies & Poppyfields Nursery
The sun is shining as we write this! A taste of things to come! We are really pleased to say the revamp, at Poppies, of our Spinney is now complete! Children can enjoy a builders yard, gardening, mud kitchen, hidden dens, a house on the hill, alongside our usual provision of Literacy Den, art tables and assault courses. We are hoping to put a new outdoor classroom in the space very soon!
The Wild Wood area has also been given a make over, with a home-corner and mini world area added, coupled with a new yoga area for use when the weather warms up! A huge Thankyou to Chris, Mark and the team at M.J. Ryalls for their never-ending support! Their team always go that extra mile to help and we feel incredibly grateful having them in Stotfold! Our children at both Poppies and Poppyfields, this term have explored authors and books. The Hungry Caterpillar sparked great interest with beautiful 3D caterpillars created, while gingerbread figures proved ever popular! The Rainbow fish created lots of opportunities to explore sharing while bean planting supported Jack on his adventures with a giant! Peter Rabbit then brought welcome Easter activities! At our after school clubs at both sites there have been sports activities, den making, treasure hunts, bug hunts and making their own snacks to enjoy!
Wishing you all a safe and happy month!

Watermill
Book now for a great day (and evening) out!
Whist Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee must be the major event of the year and all of us at Stotfold Mill look forward to the celebrations in June, it is only just over a month before what promises to be the second biggest event in Stotfold of 2022. This of course is our Steam Fair and Country Show which takes place on the weekend of 7th/8th May. Returning after two years missed due to the pandemic, we are determined to make it the greatest show ever. For the first time we will have four major attractions to watch in the arena almost non-stop throughout both days. The ever popular Flyin’ Ryan daredevil stunt team returns with Ryan accompanied by Tasty Tina and Jumpin’ James performing their ‘explosive’ range of motorcycle stunts. From two wheels to four we welcome for the first time the Landrover Stunt Team with versatile 4x4 and Off-roaders promising a spectacular display. More serenely, we will be welcoming Bob with his collies demonstrating their skills at driving and shepherding a variety of animals, with audience participation. The final team in the arena will be participating in the Stotfold Mill Lamb National giving the opportunity for the audience to select and cheer on their favourite to win the event. We are also looking forward to enjoying displays from our local schools as well as performances by the Gifford Dance Academy. If you can manage to break yourself away from all the arena attractions you will find the usual range of traders around the site as well as all the stalls in the craft tent and the opportunity for a helicopter flight. There will be a wide selection of food outlets and the beer marquee with its choice of craft ales and ciders. Music groups will be performing in the marquee during the weekend and the John Saunders stage will feature a delectable variety of entertaining acts for your gratification and delight on both days. With free admission from 5.30, the beer marquee will be open throughout Saturday evening starting with a children’s disco led by DJ Hayley and followed by live music from Mo Soul and The Swing Kid through to 11.00pm. With so much entertainment available do not forget to visit the mill if you have not been before, to see it in action milling flour throughout the weekend – water supply permitting. Also ensure you view the Saunders Steam Collection featuring operating steam traction engines, fairground rides, mechanical organs, vintage lorries and vintage cars. Book your discounted tickets now www.stotfoldmill.com. Adults £10 Children £5 per day. Also be sure to book your ticket for Live@TheMill Friday 6th May 7.30pm where both Allergy and Delorean play live. This evening’s live gig in the marquee will undoubtedly rapidly be an online sell out. Remember that the Mill, tearoom and shop will be open to visitors again from 12.30 until 5.00pm on Sundays March 27th and April 10th & 24th. All of this requires a large team of willing volunteers if we are to raise the necessary funds to maintain Stotfold Watermill for future generations. Come and join us by visiting www.stotfoldmill.com/volunteer

Art Club
Welcome to the latest news and update from our friendly local Art Club. This month there are two works from the animal world. Ann Well's lively acrylic painting of Reynard the fox shows her love of bold colours and a dramatic subject. This contrasts with Janet Ball's lovely delicate watercolour of a flamingo, which has pride of place in her home .Janet will be familiar to a many local parents and children, as she ran the Summerfield nursery school for many years till her retirement. We hope you enjoying seeing some of our members work!

GRANTS AVAILABLE FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS Local voluntary organisations are invited to make application for grants that will directly benefit Stotfold. Applications from individuals will not be considered. Please contact the Council offices for an application form and guidance notes. Completed applications to reach the Town Council office by Wednesday 13th April 2022.
QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE What are your plans? We’d like to hear from you if you are organising a street party, a special event or activity. Nearer the time, we will produce a programme of events taking place throughout Stotfold, to include events you may be organising yourselves, so please contact us on enquiries@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk and let us know. For more information on the town council’s plans, please visit our website. RIVERSIDE PLAYING FIELD REFURBISHMENT Following a recent community survey, the town council is now considering two options:
Refurbish existing MUGA, provide new skate park and play equipment One option is to retain and refurbish the existing MUGA using specific S106 funds available and an awarded grant, bringing it back into full use. We would provide a relocated, much larger skate park (than the original one, now removed due to safety issues) and would look to the community to help with the layout. We would provide a larger area with new play equipment, replacing the old and outdated pieces. This would be of a wooden design, to complement its edge of town and countryside surroundings, and the existing wooden zip-wire which would remain.
On the diagram to the left, the yellow square is the existing football pitch, the black square shows the existing MUGA, the red area shows the proposed location for the new play equipment, the blocked out brown square shows the site for the relocated skate park, the white square shows a possible car park extension, and the blue area is the existing ‘pond’ area, which is subject to a separate improvement programme in coming months.
32
The hatched pink area running alongside the River Ivel could be managed to provide increased biodiversity, with paths cut in to access certain areas.
To contact the Stotfold News Magazine please call 01462 731986
Location for proposed new play equipment Replace MUGA with an ‘activity hub’ – new building, with car park and play equipment This alternative option would see the existing MUGA removed and replaced with a new building, housing two large courts and associated hireable space. It would come with a large car park and access road from Malthouse Lane. A replacement skate park would also be provided as per project proposal above, together with a smaller area for new play equipment.
With both projects, the existing youth shelter and football pitch would remain. We would also be looking to provide additional or replacement picnic benches in suitable locations. Security of the car park is being improved by provision of new lighting and a new height barrier of 2.1m.
As the refurbishment of the existing MUGA already has funding allocated, and if the second larger proposal were to go ahead it would be some time before work on the ground started, we have agreed to commence the refurbishment of the MUGA at the earliest opportunity. This will ensure the community has somewhere to play sports, learn to ride a bike, have a kick-about or perhaps to test your new remote-controlled car! In terms of timing and finance, the first project would be around £400,000, with funding already identified/available for some elements. The second project for an ‘activity hub’ would cost around £4million. Funding for this project needs to be identified. For either project, we would need to go out to tender for these sized projects and obtain planning permission. Residents should be aware that this process can be lengthy. We would like to hear your views on our initial proposed options, and if you would like more information, please ask. Thank you
CITIZENS AWARDS 2022 At this year’s Annual Town Meeting, two local residents were presented with a Citizens Award to recognise the outstanding contributions they have given to the community of Stotfold, often on a voluntary basis and outside of their everyday occupation. Chris Hall Has quietly worked hard to keep verges and hedgerows around the town clear of litter, improving the cleanliness and wellbeing of our surroundings. He extended his own efforts in removing litter from our streets by personally funding the purchase of litter pickers, bag support rings and high visibility jackets and offering them free of charge to motivate other residents to take part in their own litter pick. He goes further than that, in keeping an eye on the town and spotting issues such as fallen trees in recent fierce winds, and tethering watering pots at the cemetery so they don’t get blown around on a windy day. He has a true community spirit.
Mollie Jennings Has been a long-standing member of Stotfold Bowls Club and was a founder member of the Ladies Bowls Club with her first personal competition win coming in 1966. As well as being involved in the official running of the club and competitions, she helped in social events for the club and in support of charities and worthy causes. She stepped down as Chair in November last year and at their latest Award Night, Bowls England, the governing body of outdoor lawn bowls, recognised Mollie’s achievements and support to the bowls community with a Certificate of Merit. News from King’s
Baptist Church
Long ago the Apostle Paul, in his letter to the young church in the city of Corinth, wrote “we proclaim Christ crucified.” That remains true for all Christians today, and especially as we approach Easter. Paul found himself in a world where people on one side demanded to see miracles, whilst those on the other desired to learn wisdom. To them the good news about Jesus was a “stumbling block” and “foolishness.” Paul explained that in Jesus we find both the power and the wisdom of God. How could a man who died on a cross be God saving the world? It makes no sense. But the power and wisdom of God in action means salvation for all, good news for all. And that is what we proclaim! Author Aiden Tozer writes: “There is an exquisite appropriateness in our celebrating the resurrection of Christ in the spring. When nature is waking to life again after her long winter of sleep, it is then that the thoughts of Christians everywhere are turned to the No Fuss, No Mess, No Harsh Chemicals wonder of the Saviour’s coming out of the tomb after His ordeal with sin and death. Methodist Church
The “triumph of the King” Stone crosses stand at churches, graveyards and other locations across the whole world, as a symbol of Jesus Christ. The hymn says “Sing, my tongue, the Saviour’s glory, of his cross the mystery sing; lift on high the wondrous trophy, tell the triumph of the King”.
For some, the cross is a comfort. For others it is distressing, representing only suffering. Really, the cross of Jesus is both those things. The story of Jesus shows him continuing to spread his message of God’s love for all people. But in doing so, gathering many followers as he did, he was knowingly walking towards the danger of being arrested by the religious authorities and of being executed by the occupying forces of imperial Rome. Rome’s standard execution method was crucifixion. Christians commemorate and remember Jesus crucified on Good Friday, 15th April this year, with walks and with contemplative times (eg 2pm at St Mary the Virgin Stotfold). It helps us remember that Jesus understands the suffering people endure. In these troubled days, when we have seen so much evil and suffering, and tried to help where we can and pray for peace, for justice and hope, the cross shows that God understands. Easter Day (April 17th) celebrates Jesus victory over death, which is why it “tells the triumph of the King”. Jesus’s victory isn’t like anything won on earth by might or power, but that of someone who gave up everything for his friends. Monday Club extends a warm welcome for new friends, 2pm to 3:30pm every week, with Scrabble and refreshments.
