Poppies & Poppyfields Nursery
Here at Poppies and Poppyfields we have conducted research on the importance of nature, in particular its role in current sustainability challenges. Research carried out by the University of Exeter (2020) found that those who spent time in nature were more likely to recycle, be eco-friendly and support sustainability. We therefore foster a love of nature, helping children connect with the natural world. Ideas families may like to try at home include going on a ‘sounds’ walk and collect sounds such as birds singing, dogs barking, wind rustling leaves, running rivers. There is also a campaign running by the Wildlife Trust at wildlifetrusts.org/30dayswild where families are encouraged to value the natural world.
Our outdoor environments’ at both our sites provide a rich, stimulating environment where children learn to be curious, be creative, become independent, learn how to keep safe, be happy and have fun with nature! We operate ‘free-flow’ where our outdoor spaces are open throughout the year and children can Sewing move freely between them. Our curriculum ensures that opportunity for every aspect of Social learning is present both indoors and outside. This month, our children have explored nocturnal and diurnal animals with many of them remembering which animals are out in the day or night. We have supported National Hedgehog week and spent a very happy time exploring these delightful creatures. Children used dough, clay and wood spills to recreate them, some used woodwork and made beautiful models, while painting to create a spikey hedgehog body was great fun! Children also learned about hibernation through our discussions. During the run up to the Jubilee, children made bunting and crowns, explored our Jubilee Sensory tray, created Jubilee music and we held Jubilee Picnics at snack times! Our breakfast and after school children have also been enjoying the outdoors and are planning to make Jubilee Magazines, with all the things they have collected over the Jubilee celebrations, when we return after half term. Value of the Month: Trust Quote of the month: ‘”if a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder…he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with them the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in.” Rachel Carson (1956)
