What do you think?

There is often a misconception that therapists are only interested in feelings. The recent increase in therapists within TV drama’s probably adds to this idea as their main question is usually, ‘how do you feel about that?’. However, humans are not just feeling beings anymore than we are just thinking beings. We are thinking and feeling beings whose ability to manage both of these directly shape our subsequent actions and the way we live out our lives.

When life brings situations that evoke distress of any kind, the corresponding thoughts we have will help or hinder us in finding our way through. If our thoughts are filled with ‘oughts’ and ‘shoulds’ or unrealistic expectations of ourselves, others or life in general, we may struggle to find constructive ways to manage our internal response and navigate life’s trials.

Equally, if we struggle to believe that we can find our way through, we may get stuck in an ‘I can’t’ mindset that causes mental paralysis. If we can pause to notice our thoughts about a situation, we can check if these are accurate and supporting or sabotaging our responses. Whilst it is natural to feel distressed in the face of distressing circumstances, if we get caught in unhelpful thinking patterns, these can increase the original distress as well as having a debilitating impact on our ability to respond.

We must learn to notice our thoughts so we can rein them in and update them if they are running amok telling us unhelpful or untrue things. Many things in life are distressing and we don’t need to tell ourselves that this is Anxiety, Weight Release, Depression, not true. We must learn to manage distress in constructive ways but it is Fears & Phobias, Smoking Cessation, also helpful to recognise when our thoughts are trapping us in the distress.
