COMMODORE’S LOG
Hello Friends.....It was with great sadness that we recognized the loss of Charley Morgan in January. Mr. Morgan was a true legend in the sailing community and has played a major role in the history of our Club. Many may not be aware that the Heritage Lounge was named for his vessel Heritage which he designed, built, and skippered in the Americas Cup. The Club honored Mr. Morgan by flying the burgee at half-mast for one week. The sounding of eight bells and a moment of silence was observed at the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors meetings in January. Please see page 11 for details about a special Legacy Celebration for Charley being hosted by the SPYC on February 28th.
On a brighter note, the Blessing of the Fleet was held on January 22nd with an unusually large contingent of boats participating this year. The annual blessing is a treasured and longstanding SPYC tradition. Thank you to Fleet Captain Kevin Cross for organizing and planning this event.
In January, the Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus appreciation party was held. In addition, a new member event was held. Lots of activities for the new year are coming up. We are looking forward to the Grand Prix event in March and the St. Petersburg Motor Classic will be held on Sunday, February 5th. And of course, don’t forget about Valentine’s Day! Members can enjoy specials leading up to this event.
On the sailing front, the Valentine’s Day Regatta, showcasing our Junior Sailors, will be held on February 11th and 12th. Our largest event yet, the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series will be held on February 17th - 19th.
Your Board of Directors and Committees have been quite busy. The Marina Oversight Committee, chaired by Fred Higham, is anxiously awaiting the final bids for the redevelopment of the downtown marina. The Master Facilities Planning Committee, chaired by Past Commodore Waters, has continued with its evaluation of options for the future of our downtown facility. Please be patient as much work remains to be done.
I am happy to report that interest in membership in our Club continues to be strong. Hope to see you around the Club.
Cordially,
Brian K. Smith, CommodoreMission Statement: The St. Petersburg Yacht Club provides preeminent yachting and social experiences for members, their families and guests, and honors the Club’s rich yachting heritage in a welcoming environment.
General Manager’s Log
by: Rhett J. Robicheaux, CCMFebruary is here and with that comes tons of fun! Last month was a big January for us but as you all know it’s February that really lights things up here at the Club. Regatta season is in full sail with the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series and the St. Petersburg Motor Classic, with all indications that both events will break record in attendance. SPYC Group Excursions are back with a very successful turnout last month with Hamilton - next up - TINA: The Tina Turner Musical. "Remembering Rock ‘n’ Roll" with The SouthShore Cruisers band is around the corner and on the same night, the SPYC Kids Video Game Bus Party. These are just a few of the main events happening, not to mention regular membership activity and banquets. All events have been selling out over the past few months so make your reservation early!
Upcoming Marina Project and Master Plan Update – As Commodore Smith has alluded to in his log, both have involved extensive work by your Flag, Marina Oversite Committee, Master Facilities Planning Committee and Board alike. The Marina Project is moving along well as we have narrowed the dock manufacturing down to two products and are awaiting final bids from four contractors any day now. The Master Facilities Plan has been moving along nicely as well but it looks like we will be putting more time into evaluating comments from the membership, and analyzing the financial outlook with the new Capital Contribution that was just initiated. With that said, our original timeline has been adjusted. Stay tuned for updates later this spring regarding the status of both projects.
Downtown Parking Garage - Our garage will be receiving new entry arm/gates that will be installed and in place by the middle of February but not fully active till May 1, 2023. The House and Grounds Committee and Board approved this project about a year ago to mediate the outside traffic using our garage and taking up spaces from our members. The reason for waiting to go live is that there are a lot of logistics we still must iron out in addition to this being our busiest time of year, starting this new procedure before then would be a disservice to the membership. Keep an eye out for more information regarding the procedures for members to pick up their new transmitter stickers. This will be an undertaking with many questions to come, I’m sure, so please bear with us as we launch this new process over the next several months.
Benefits of being a Member and why Membership is a Privilege not an Entitlement - Membership in a fine club is an earned privilege, an opportunity to spend quality time with people who share your values, interest, and morale’s; a place where prospective members/spouses meet, where families safely engage in recreational and social activities. As we continue to go through this process in becoming the best that SPYC can be we need to really reflect on what made this Club the great Club it is. That being its rich history in sailing, a community social hub where friends and families alike can gather while enjoying each other’s company, a safe haven in troubling times, etc. Now with our unique position with multiple locations there is even more reason in understanding its value and privilege in belonging. In closing, we are all set for a couple of very active months ahead, all areas and all facilities will be in full utilization mode. Please make reservations early to help us prepare for what is ahead. I look forward to seeing everyone around our various facilities!
Cheers,

An Icon in the World of Sailing...
Charles Morgan (Charley)
1929 - 2023
by Trisha Birkenstock, SPYC HistorianJanuary 6, 2023, saw the passing of a significant figure in a phenomenal era of yacht racing history. Charley Morgan was an icon in the world of sailing: sailmaker, racing sailor, yacht designer (designed over 52 sailing yachts), boat builder and America’s Cup designer and competitor. [To her dying day, his Mother wanted him to be an aeronautical engineer and couldn’t understand his obsession with sailing!] There have been many articles written about Charley’s accomplishments and honors. This article is meant to focus on one small part of Charley’s considerable contributions to the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.
In 1968, Charley financed, designed and built Heritage , the last 12-meter built of wood and `unquestionably the most beautiful ever built.’ May 1970, Morgan and a contingent of SPYC crew and supporters made it to Newport, RI, for the America’s Cup defender trials. There were four 12-meters competing for the America’s Cup defense:
Weatherly, Intrepid, Heritage and Valiant. June 11, 1970: “ Heritage made her debut in the trials today and Intrepid and Valiant promptly tore into her like a couple of piranhas attacking a goldfish.” Heritage started the trials off well but was ultimately knocked out by Valiant and Intrepid. (Intrepid went on to win the cup.) “Heritage won first prize in the beauty contest.” Soon after, Morgan donated Heritage to a college… was later converted for ocean racing and shipped to the Great Lakes to race there…and is currently for charter in Newport.
On display in the Heritage Lounge is a photo of Heritage in Newport with Charley at the helm. While redoing the lounge in 1971, SPYC Board of Directors asked Charley permission to name the lounge after his yacht Heritage . Charley approved but wanted to “de-personalize” his connection. He named his boat after the rich maritime traditions and heritage of this nation and of this area in particular; he wanted that connection to be associated with the lounge and the Club’s own maritime heritage. [Hanging over the bar area in the Heritage Lounge are a few of the tank test models used in the construction of Heritage.]
Yachting Recognition 2011
“Charley Morgan – Cumulative lifetime achievement award for bringing honor to the St. Petersburg Y.C. while racing and in retirement from active competition.” During his lifetime, Charley made significant contributions to making SPYC known and respected throughout the world. Above all, he was a mentor and a friend and will be greatly missed.

Master Driver The 2023 Team Race Regatta
by Janet Walker, Regatta ChairSPYC was proud to host the 15th Annual Master Driver Team Race Regatta from January 13th - 15th. Five teams of six sailors from New York YC, Southern YC, Texas Corinthian YC, Seawanhaka Corinthian YC, plus SPYC competed in this "2 boat on 2 boat" team racing competition in J/70s on Tampa Bay near the Pier. Two complete round robins were sailed on Saturday in very rough, cold weather with winds gusting at times to 22 knots. It was exciting to watch as two J/70s battled competitively against an opposing team of two J/70s on a short windward leeward course, taking 9 to 14 minutes to complete a flight. Four umpires headed by Tom Rinda, plus some USF students, and umpires Eric Johnson, Glen Oliver and Phil Pape. called the rule infractions to keep order on the course. Results are at www.spyc.org under “Regattas “>> MDTR.
Seawanhaka Corinthian YC came in First Place followed very closely in a tense tie breaker by SPYC. Our two boat teams were skippered by David Mendelblatt and Mike Funsch plus crew of John Wallace, Kevin Reali, Amy Baxter Felder and Matt Braun . PRO was Shawn Macking with a RC of Gina Bowden-Pierce and Janet Walker (Regatta Chair) in Coast Pilot, plus excellent mark setters Ian Lineberger, Kyle Runnfeldt and Bogan Whitehead. Many thanks go to SPYC and the Sailing Center for their hard work on helping to make this happen.
Meet, greet and praise your fellow SPYC members who's on the water achievements carry the SPYC burgee and name to regional, national, and worldwide recognition.
Please join us in the Celebration!

Chocolate Ganache Cake
Recipe by Pastry Chef Suzanne Gendrot
Cake Ingredients
3/4 cup All Purpose Flour
(or an all-purpose gluten free flour blend)
1 cup Sugar
1/3 cup Unsweetened Cocoa
1 Tsp. Baking Soda
1/2 Tsp. Baking Powder
3/4 Tsp. Salt
1/2 cup Buttermilk
1/4 cup Canola oil
1 Large Egg (room temperature)
1 & 1/2 Tsp. Vanilla Extract
1/2 cup Strong Brewed Coffee of your choice
Ganache Ingredients
Cake Baking Directions
1) Pre-heat Oven to 350° degrees - Spray a 9" round cake pan with baking spray and line the pan with parchment paper; set aside.
2) In a mixing bowl sift the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder and salt; whisk to combine.
3) In a separate mixing bowl combine together the buttermilk, oil, egg and vanilla. Once mixed well, gradually add the flour mixture to the buttermilk mixture. Combine together then add your strong brewed coffee; mix well one last time.
4) Pour cake batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 25-35 minutes; check cake with a toothpick, if it comes out clean then your cake is done.
5) Cool for 15-20 minutes, then invert onto a cooling rack so the cake cools completely and evenly.
Making the Ganache & finishing your cake
1) In a mixing bowl place the chocolate chips and butter.
2) On the stovetop using a medium saucepan, bring the cream and corn syrup to a simmer on med-high heat. Do not let the cream boil.
3) Pour the cream mixture over the chocolate chips and butter and let stand for 2-3 minutes, then stir until very smooth.
4) Pour the Ganache over the cake, making sure the top and sides are covered and the excess runs off onto a baking sheet.
5) Place the cake in the refrigerator so the Ganache hardens. Garnish with fresh fruit (if you like) - serve slightly chilled or at room temperature.
7) Yields approximately 12-16 servings based on how thick you cut your slices.

Saniyah has assisted in many areas of the PAG Club –not only as a server and hostess, but also coming to the downtown location and even helping out during shutdown. She has shown us all what can be done by observing, learning, maintaining a positive attitude, and embracing the SPYC standards - Congratulations, Saniyah, for a job well done!

Mr.SALTY SISTERS
by Carol HansenDecember is always a fun time for the Salty Sisters!!! On December 7th, we held our Annual Candy Cane Regatta and December 14th our Christmas Party! At lunch, after the Candy Cane Regatta, PC Helen Larsen announced the winners of the “no rules” regatta. It was a wet & wild day on the water, and it was pointed out that it seems we have taught the new class how NOT to sail!! There was no wind, so most everyone was paddling. The three races, Christmas Tree, Candy Cane, and Poker Run provided a lot of laughs that morning. Winners of the Christmas Tree race: 1st place – Anna Streufert & Virginia Campbell; 2nd place – Gisela Marsano & Brenda Tate; 3rd place – Emily Kennedy & Karen Fidrych. Last place – Rosemary Sherman & Iris Mastry.
There were many winners of the Candy Cane Race and Poker Run, too many to list. After lunch, the Salties lined up for the Ugly Sweater Contest sporting a variety of interesting sweaters, sweatshirts, & T-Shirts. The following week, the Salty Sisters’ Social Committee, headed up by Mik Severini, recreated the scene from the 1965 holiday special when Linus explains “What Christmas is all about.” The “Charlie Brown Tree” centerpieces decorated all the tables, and went home to the Salty with a birthday closest to Christmas. The annual tradition of the newest class performing their skit to introduce themselves went off without a hitch. The Class of 2021, singing and dancing to the Sounds of Salties (Sound of Music theme), was a huge hit. They are "forever 21".
by Capt. Wayne AndrewsSALTWATER ANGLERS
The Saltwater Anglers are stepping up the game! We are going to liven up monthly meetings with speakers and prizes. More fishing events, multi-boat fishing days and maybe with enough interest an out-of-town fishing event.
Fishing has been great offshore. Red grouper opened on January 1st. Just when you thought you had to have a power boat to go fishing, all you sailors need to take heed. Captain Brian Hill pulled in a monster Gag Grouper while trolling under full sail near the end of the ship channel out of Tampa Bay late in December, while the Gag Grouper season was still open.
Sign up for the 2023 Spring Fishing Tournament on April 29th. There will be a limit on the number of boats. Get in on the fun! Boat, or no boat, let me know and we’ll find a spot.
The Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00 pm on the second Wednesday evening of every month at the Downtown Clubhouse. Please join us at one of our next meetings on February 8th and March 8th, or sign up on SPYCfish.com and get on the email list.
RIDERS CLUB
by Bob Frazee, PresidentThe Riders Club kicked off the 2023 season with a ride on January 6th. Rider members Bob Russell, Ray Noyes and Bob Frazee, along with guest rider, Bob Ebaugh, headed out on I-275 S. on a beautiful, sunny winter day for a ride into Manatee, Desoto and Sarasota counties. Our route took us thru Parish and then on to Myakka City, where we had lunch at the recently reopened Myakka City Grill. This route to Myakka City was along several county and local roads, with lots of scenic open country and an abundance of cattle grazing in pastures along the way.
After a good lunch, we continued our ride south and east thru more open country and cattle and then back toward Sarasota. After a brief rest stop, we headed along a northerly route on a series of roads that ran along the eastern edge of Sarasota County and back into Manatee, where we picked up I-275 N. back into St. Petersburg. Our group usually has a weekly ride to a destination for lunch.
We basically take turns planning the routes and the restaurant for lunch, as well as fuel and rest stops along the way. Our rides are generally about 150-200 miles and take 4-5 hours, from start to finish. Our challenge is to find roads not previously traveled for at least part of every ride. We also plan a few multi-day destination rides throughout the year. For 2023, we have a 3 day trip planned in March to Daytona for Bike Week, and a 3 week trip to the Canadian Maritimes in July. We are looking at a third multi -day trip for the fall season.
Anyone who likes to ride motorcycles is welcome to join us for any ride. We also have a group email set up and will add anyone who is interested. If you would like more information, please contact Bob Frazee at bfrazee50@gmail.com or by phone at (315) 420-7114.
by Rich TreinenThe Wing Shooters Society wild game dinner is an annual event where the proceeds of previous hunts, extracted from home freezers, are pooled for our annual group dinner. This year’s event was originally scheduled for November 10th but the weather, you’ll remember a vicious storm blew through that Thursday, pushed the dinner to January 12th. Our host was Sandy Schoenberg. New to this year’s event was coordination of the volume. This was Wayne Andrews’ responsibility. It was not clear if he volunteered or was coerced to take the task.
The need for volume control has been identified at previous wild game dinners. There had always been control over the wild game part of the feed, the cooks controlled that. It was all the other stuff that walked through the door that created a problem. It was a free-for-all. Every Wing Shooter brought something to share and every horizontal square inch of the host’s home was covered with sides and a wide
variety of the distiller's best. Thirty some hearty eaters were tasked with consuming enough food for 200. With all the leftovers none of us needed to cook for a week. Wayne fixed that problem this year.
We had 5 assigned sides to go with our assortment of prepared game. There were still a couple of unauthorized sides that snuck in the back door, however everything was delicious, the leftovers were minimal and a great time was had by all.
There was one concern raised a bit later in the evening in the midst of the cigar smoke. The issue was about the wild game part of the meal. Our organized quail hunts to various places in Georgia have been going on for over 5 years. We all bag 20 some birds each and bring them home. Over time those bags tend to pile up at the bottom of the freezer. But the bags are not marked. 2021? 2019? 2015! They all look the same. No one seemed to know how long you can safely keep quail in your freezer.
Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters are encouraged to contact Grand Marshall, Frank Robinson at fhr506@ gmail.com.
RV LAND CRUISERS
by Angela Kowalik, Wagon MasterDuring December, Ken & Corrine St. Jean, and Rick & Sarah Moseley took an RV caravan holiday trip starting first by visiting Stephen Foster State Park. The park is located along the Swanee River in the historic town of White Springs Fl. It’s known for their historic buildings and a museum devoted to the composer and namesake Stephen Foster (who wrote the 1851 song “Old Folks at Home” aka Swanee River, the Florida state song), and has an impressive Carillon Tower. But the main reason for visiting in December is to enjoy their annual Festival of Lights.
Next stop, Coastline RV Resort up in the panhandle near Apalachicola. There’s nothing like an RV site with a view of the bay! Nearby, they “dined” at a festive Mexican restaurant to celebrate Ken’s Birthday!! You know when it’s your birthday, there’s nothing like a fancy hat and beverage to celebrate!
Later, another stop at Marianna Caverns State Park before heading home. When you travel in the RV for the holidays, sometimes you need to improvise on your holiday decorations.
Upcoming Events:
• Passport Club March 2nd – Our own Larry & Joy Wissing will be “Reliving the Expedition” presenting their RV trip along the Lewis & Clark Trail
• RV Land Cruisers Meet-up, March 9th -12th - Join us for our Spring Fling, March 9th-12th at Keystone Heights RV Resort. For those going to the FMCA International Convention, this can be our “pre-rally”.
• FMCA’s 106th International Convention & RV Expo March 15th - 18th – the RV travel club, Family Motor Coach Association, are holding the 106th Expo in Perry, Georgia.
To join the group and keep up with our events, where we will be making adventures happen, please contact Angela Kowalik: SPYCRVLandCruisers@gmail.com
BROAD REACHERS
by Carol HansenThe Broad Reachers ended 2022 on a high note. We had our Annual Christmas Lunch and Gift Exchange! Kerrie at PAG provided us with a wonderful traditional turkey lunch followed by a delicious slice of key lime pie. Thanks to all who came and participated in our Auction Gift Giving tradition. Broads in attendance were: Mary Moosbruger, Carol Hansen, Barbara Arnold, Katie Rodgers, Suzanne Boohar, Tish Bowden, Connie Dubois, Carol Crawford, Charl Hadfield, Juliette Clark, KT Trudeau, and a special guest Mary Jane Peabody.
In 2022 we welcomed several new Broad Reachers to our group: Bijie Ding, Karin Fidrych, Dana Kollman, Gisela Marsano, Wendy Saks, and Robin Wilson. Other activities in 2022: We sent a team or five sailors to the Rainbow Regatta in April, hosted the Commodore Lucas Pram Regatta in October, Friendship Relay in December, and many fun sails around Bird Island and exploring the waters around PAG. We were also very proud of our FWSA Championship team coming in 2nd place in the FWSA Championship Regatta in October. The Broads did have a couple of work/repair days due to not having any wind or too much wind to sail. We look forward to an exciting sailing season in 2023.
Come join us for Saturday morning for some fun sailing and racing. You can participate as a sailor, race committee, or safety ashore. For more information about becoming a Broad Reacher, contact Carol Hansen (carol@dband1.com) for more information.
G LF GROUP
by Susan CooperThe golf group ended a terrific 2022 year by celebrating at our Annual Holiday Party on December 8th. Lots of fun was had by all as we sang and danced to the music of Farley Compton. A big congratulations to our golfers of the year for 2022, Bekah Rush and John Rogers.
We want to thank Susan and John Arsenault for their many dedicated years of service heading up our group. They will still remain among the group as golfers but moving forward our new leadership will be headed up by Bekah Rush, Bill Protz and Susan Cooper. Happy New Year to all and looking forward to welcoming new members and enjoying many wonderful golf outings in 2023!
Barbara Watson & Carol Hansen Broad Reachers Tish Bowden & Joanne Simmons Mary Moosbruger, Charl Hadfield & Carol Crawford Golfers of the Year: John Rogers & Bekah RushCRUISING FLEET
by Kevin Cross, Fleet CaptainCruisers outdid themselves for the 2022 Lighting of the Yachts! With clear skies and calm waters, the lights from our boats seemed to shine extra bright. Best decorated awards went to Longtail by Steve and Alyssa Methot (power) and Hula Girl by Steve Shortt and Alicia McManaman (sail). Thanks to the 30+ boats who participated in this fun club tradition and to Fillingham Yacht Sales for sponsoring.
We had a record turnout for our January 5th luncheon where we welcomed new members, enjoyed Bill Robbins’ presentation on his marine surveying experiences, and reviewed plans for our two-week Commodore’s Cruise in late April. This year’s cruise features exciting options for extended cruising to the Keys or across the Okeechobee Waterway as well as a return journey. Sign-ups for the Commodore’s Cruise opened at the meeting and can be made by contacting me at fleet.captain@spyc.org.
The Day Trippers, our smaller boat group, enjoyed a beautiful December day as they ventured across Tampa Bay to the new Finn’s Dockside Grill in Apollo Beach. In January, they tried out the new Doc Ford’s Jungle Terrace. Good food, good times!
Tom and Faye Turke served as Port Directors for our January cruise-in which included a visit to the St. Pete Boat Show, our annual Vessel Safety Checks by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the Blessing of the Fleet. Check back next month for photos from these events.
Our February 2nd dinner features a representative from the US Coast Guard, St. Petersburg Search and Rescue Unit. Paul and Gini Berry have organized our 2023 Commodore’s Cruise shirts and are taking orders until February 2nd. They will have sample shirts available at the meeting to help with sizing. Also at this meeting, we will hear updates on our February cruises to Carlouel YC (in three groups), our March swap with Naples YC and excursion to the April 1st Tampa Bay Lightning game. Exciting times!
• Monthly Meeting (dinner): Thurs., Feb 2nd
• Mid-week cruises to Carlouel YC in 3 groups: Feb. 8-10; Feb 15-17; Feb 22-24
•Monthly Meeting (lunch): Thurs., March 2nd

Passport CLUB
by Dr. Patsy Warmack, PresidentThe mission of the Passport Club is to share travel experiences, plans, and bucket lists for travel domestic or international; by land, sea or air; self-drive or sit back and let others do the work.
February 2nd: Loren Hoffman, Mustang Odyssey: A Trip into the Last Forbidden Kingdom. In the Summer of 1992, Hoffman was among the very first allowed to visit Mustang after the Nepal government made limited access available to visitors. The experience of visiting this culturally rich and arid landscape is not unlike being transported back into Biblical times. Join the adventure!
March 2nd: Larry and Joy Wissing, Lewis and Clark Trail – Undaunted Courage. Share the 47-day tour with the Wissing’s and about twenty other RV’ers along the historic trail. The original Lewis and Clark round trip pushed, pulled and portaged boats and canoes up against and sometimes down the Mighty (muddy) Missouri river. 30 members, embarked on May 14, 1804; the expedition crossed the Continental Divide of the Americas near the Lemhi Pass, eventually coming to the Columbia River, and the Pacific Ocean in 1805. The return voyage began on March 23, 1806 and ended on September 23, 1806. Only one member of the original expedition died of appendicitis early on in the trip; all 29 members returned to their homes after the grueling 2-year trek. How did the Wissing’s do? Attend the March 2nd presentation to find out!

by Angela Kowalik, PresidentEver wonder how far back your family tree goes, or are you looking for a lost relative, sibling, or child? April Min, a lawyer and professional genealogist, will lead us in discussions to explore how to start a journey into our own family history, the tools to research our genealogy, DNA testing, and how it can help uncover our family histories. Including strategies for using the most common genealogy databases like Ancestry.com and FamilySearch. Who knows, perhaps you too might turn your hobby into a profession, trace your lineage to early pioneers, or find that "someone".
Join us for our February 20th program, as we are Exploring Heritage through Genealogy. Make your reservation now online (www.spyc.org) or call (727) 360-1646. We start at 11:00 am but arrive early as doors open at 10:30 for socialization and just plain fun! A special luncheon follows the LBC meeting and program.
Congratulations! At our January meeting, we celebrated reaching an important milestone: 100 Members! It’s quite an achievement to reach these triple membership numbers in this, our 15th year of the Ladies Beach Club! Marcia Smith was honored as our 100th member with a champagne toast and a bottle to take home. It was a joyous occasion. (By the time you are reading this article, we are already exceeding that number.)
