ST. PETERSBURG YACHT CLUB ~ ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA
CHAPTER ONE
I
COMMODORE’S LOG
want to thank you for the opportunity and honor to serve as the 2023-2024 Commodore of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. My earliest recollection of the Yacht Club dates to the late 60’s when I used to dine with family friends at the Club. Even at a young age I was always struck by the majesty and history of the club. I felt like I was in a very special place.
The Club also hosted the J/70 Worlds Sailing Regatta with over ninety entries representing over twenty countries. It is another feather in the Club’s cap to cement our reputation as a premier sailing club. I want to thank all the volunteers and the leadership provided by Dr. Jody Abrams and Corey Hall that made this event so successful.
As a member of the Club for over 30 years I have built my own memories having attended many social and personal gatherings with family and friends. Who would ever have thought that I would be Commodore one day! I want to express a special thank you to Past Commodore Brian Smith for his leadership this past year.
We also hosted Michael Gutenplan, a third-generation mentalist who put on an incredible show and a new member party that was well attended, and another will be scheduled in 6 months. Please keep the Yacht Club in mind as you make your holiday party plans. Thanksgiving will include not only an incredible spread at the Club, but you can also order “Thanksgiving To-Go”. You don’t want to miss the Commodore's Ball on November 11th, it is a TITANIC themed event and a wonderful way to honor our outgoing Commodore.
He ushered the Club through our strategic and master planning processes that laid the groundwork for the next generation of Yacht Club members. I understand how Brian was so successful in private business as I watched how he dealt with the other Flag officers, Board and staff. He always listened and was open to other’s thoughts and opinions and had a genuine concern for the membership. I only hope that I can accomplish a fraction of what he has. To that end, I am excited about continuing the process of designing a new clubhouse. The Building Redevelopment Oversight Committee (BROC) is hard at it with preliminary planning of the facility. I hope that they will have some conceptual concepts to share and gather member feedback over the coming months. By the time you read this our new docks should have been delivered and demolition well under way.
Lastly, I want to share my experience attending the Club’s first International Council of Yacht Clubs (ICOYC) conference with our manager that was recently held in Vancouver. Your Club was admitted to this invitation only worldwide organization this past year. Over 45 clubs were represented from the US, Hong Kong, Australia, Europe and South America. I was honored to be asked to make a presentation about our Club’s strategic and master planning process. I met some incredible people with my primary takeaway being that it doesn’t matter where your club is located or how it is governed, we are all facing the same challenges.
Cordially,
Scott Boyle, Commodore

s we settle into fall with the holidays fast approaching and the weather in St. Petersburg becoming much more bearable, please remember all the outdoor options we have for dining and events. With that said, we still ask for your patience as staffing continues to be a challenge. We have hired some great new staff members which are still in the training mode but, from what I am observing they are looking to become valuable additions to our team. We anticipate a very busy holiday season. Dock’s Update – Our new docks have arrived from Sweden! Next steps... after the J/70 Worlds we will continue with the demo which will take approximately eight weeks. Once this is complete the actual building of the docks will begin. During this time frame we still have obstacles to attend to, such as the holidays, the Helly Hansen Regatta World Series in February, and the Grand Prix in early March. With that said, this continues to be a process that will look like things are moving along well, then, a pause. Once the docks are in place and they look usable the utilities must go in. Your continued patience is very much appreciated. We all want the same result here, which is a World Class Dock Facility we can all be proud of. Back of the House Tours – Several weeks back we had a request from a few members to see our back of house operations. The intent was to get a better understanding of how we came to the decision to replace the Clubhouse in the future. Chef Christian, our Facilities Director Steve, and myself put together a tour for this group showing them our kitchen operations, storage, overall flow inefficiencies and opportunities, laundry facilities, mechanical room, water tower and all the challenges Steve deals with on a day-to-day basis of running an aging facility. The tour was a huge success and quit mind blowing for the entire group as to the complexity of our operation. Since that time, we have conducted five tours and will continue every Friday for as long as we continue to have members sign-up. The tours take place every Friday after our Bell Ringer Lunch from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. These tours have been selling out each week as it’s a max of 10 members at a time. Building Replacement Oversight Committee (BROC) – This committee has been formed and has met a few times to start what’s to be a long, thoughtful process over the next several years. The first steps were to investigate what our potential options are with a new building, zoning, setbacks etc., so we engaged a surveying firm to get this process started. Once we have this information, we can then start with a conceptional exterior plan. As mentioned earlier this is going to be a marathon, not a sprint, so be patient and the Club will be communicating with its membership at each stage of the process. The St. Petersburg Yacht Club – “Built on Tradition, Embracing the Future”. In closing, we are honored for the ability to host the J/70 Worlds and as you read this article, we will be closing in on its completion and success of this World Class Event. Thank you to the entire Team here at SPYC for knocking it out of the park! One last note... Congratulations to the Club leadership, members, management and staff for once again having been selected as a Platinum Club of the World 2024-2025. This represents the Top 1% of private clubs around the globe. I look forward to seeing you around the Club soon. Cheers,

he Golf Group at SPYC September outing took place at Cove Cay Golf Club. Congratulations to the first place winners: Bijie Ding, Martin Morris, John Arsenault and Jeff Farmer. Closest to the Pin went to Jeff Farmer, Gina Pierce and David Bower. Players enjoyed a nice lunch after paying compliments of the Golf Group. We were also able to send two members, Kimberlie and David Bowers, to the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs First Annual Inter-Club Golf Competition on September 22nd & 23rd, at the Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club located in Palm City, Florida. There was much camaraderie and fun had by all participants in this exciting inaugural event. Future group outings this fall include Innisbrook and the Vinoy. Our monthly social meetings are held the 1st Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm at the downtown Clubhouse with games with prizes, followed by drinks and dinner, as a group out on the Tiki deck. Our Annual Christmas Party is open to all Golf Group members and will take place on Wednesday, December 6th at 6:00 pm. RSVP to the "Evite" to be included in this enjoyable night. RIDERS CLUB
by James Irwin have found over the years that many boaters also love to ride motorcycles. We all love to feel the wind in our face. (Maybe that’s why dogs love to stick their heads out of car windows.)
The bond of friendship runs deep with motorcycle enthusiasts. Be it a breakfast ride, a night ride, or a long road trip, motorcyclists are always up for it. When you ride a motorcycle, most riders wave to each other even when they don’t know the other person. No matter which motorcycle you ride or which part of the country you’re from, there is always the bond of brotherhood or sisterhood that brings motorcyclists together. We have an experienced, passionate group of riders that have traveled the Continents on motorcycles together. PAGE 24 | CLUBS WITHIN THE CLUB
We are currently in discussion to decide where to plan the next event. Cuba and Peru are the current options. We welcome everyone at SPYC to join us. Weather permitting, we usually gather on Thursday or Friday mornings for a ride. The rides are very scenic and always involve a lunch somewhere unique and delicious. If you seldom ride or ride a lot, please join us. You’ll be glad you did. The spirit of friendship and community is second to none. CRUISING FLEET by Debbie Storey, Fleet Captain
O
ctober is a time of change at SPYC, and the Cruising Fleet is no exception. Our October dinner saw the exchange of the Cruising Fleet flag from the outgoing Fleet Captain (Kevin Cross) to incoming (Debbie Storey). Kevin has been at the helm of the Cruising Fleet for the last 2 years, with Susan as his “Admiral,” and they have done an incredible job leading the Fleet through significant growth and many unprecedented challenges, including Hurricane Ian! We are so grateful for their leadership, and glad to know they will remain active members of the Fleet.

Sarasota YC and Bird Key YC were our September cruising destinations, split between the two clubs on the same weekend to accommodate all cruisers who wanted to participate. Jay and Cynthia Fleece were our Port Directors, their first time as Port Directors, and they planned a terrific weekend for the group. Both yacht clubs are popular destinations for the Fleet, and with Bird Key just a short dinghy ride from Sarasota, all cruisers were able to participate in all of the activities Jay and Cynthia planned for the weekend. Friday evening kicked off with docktails and appetizers in the SYC lounge, followed by a fantastic buffet dinner in the main dining room. After dinner, several of the cruisers stayed to dance to the wonderful live band. On Saturday, cruisers shopped in St. Armands Circle, visited the Farmer’s Market in downtown Sarasota, and cooled off in the SYC pool. Saturday evening began with lively group cocktails at Cha Cha Coconuts in St. Armands Circle, followed by short walks to dinner at three different restaurants. The Day Trippers enjoyed a great September day on the water and a fabulous lunch at Island Grill. Nine-teen cruisers came by boat or iron dinghy. Many thanks to Barbara & Heber Weller for all their work leading the Day Trippers group!

CAR CLUB

T
he Car Club is once again focused on the next St. Pete Motor Classic Car Show and exciting news is on our new web site, which should be live by the time you read this. It is a massive improvement and allows entrants, volunteers and sponsors to log-in and become a part of our next great show. As before it will be adjacent to the Club on South Straub Park, where we entertained 300+ cars and thousands of spectators, not to mention raising substantial money for our worthy charities. Of course, nothing happens without volunteers from our hard working Committee, to the day of show helpers. As always, we need as many hands as possible to set up, take down, judge cars and direct traffic on that day, plus help with prior promoting of the event. We also need good sponsors, so anyone who wishes or knows of someone who would like to promote their business, please get in touch. Additioinally, we are seeking to add to the committee a position of Treasurer; an individual with some Finance background would be a benefit. Also we are looking for a Social Media expert to help with web site and regular Social Media (Facebook, Instagram etc) updates. Members, Cars and Coffee is still happening, which is a causal meet-up and open to all SPYC members; whatever you drive, not just classics. Come and join us on November 15th at 8:00 am for coffee and breakfast (for those who wish), meeting in the Downtown Clubhouse garage. Hopefully we will have some exciting venues and cool weather, so come on down and show us your ride! E-mail me at: andyevans@me.com

he “Broads” had a fabulous September of sailing. SPYC’s extraordinary Sue Davidson coached Dana Kollman, KT Trudeau, Juliette Clark and Mik Severini through 720s, accelerating from a full stop, and developing the line of sight across the starting line. We practiced starts and then sailed two mini races. On our Race Committee Training Day, Gloria Davis ran us through the flags and starting sequences with the assistance of Barbara Watson. We then took to the water for three short races. We also worked on perfecting our “rabbit” starts this month. This technique enables us to start a race to windward without a race committee. We had so much fun with it we are planning to keep score for a full year series. October had a very full month of racing activity. We hosted the Commodore Lucas Cup on October 13th, had rabbit race days and then we wrapped up the month with a Halloween Costume Regatta on October 28th. Women of all sailing ability are invited to try us out. We sail most Saturday mornings out of PAG. For more information contact our Captain, Gloria Davis: gloriadavis1200@gmail.com

he activities and the monthly meetings of the Wing Shooters Society are coordinated by our Grand Marshall. It’s one of those positions that looks easy on paper while in reality it is not. To date we have had four members who have held the Grand Marshall position. The first was John Hanner. John was also one of the founders of the Wing Shooters back in 2013 and served for the better part of four years. It was this period of time that established the spirit of our shooting club. Tom Hatton took over the reins for calendar year 2017 during a time of rapid growth. At the end of Tom’s tenure Gene Collins assumed the leadership role and served from 2018 through 2021. Some of the most memorable pre-meetings and meetings occurred during Gene’s leadership. In that time our pre-meetings were still allowed in the bar. Our current Grand Marshall is Frank Robinson. Now in his second year Frank has greatly expanded the range and frequency of our excursions to various shooting venues and hunting preserves.
Those wishing to join the Wing Shooters
Each of our Grand Marshalls have guided us in their own style while should contact Grand Marshall maintaining the unique demeanor and camaraderie that characterize the Frank Robinson at: fhr506@gmail.com Wing Shooters. We are a fun and rowdy group which is challenging to lead. If you sat through one of our monthly meetings you would understand. Good natured insults and snappy retorts are the norm. No one gets offended. It takes skill to maintain the edge of control. Too much control kills the spirit. It's at this point I direct your attention to the spelling used for "marshall". Dictionary aficionados will tell you marshall can be spelled with one or two Ls and there is no discernable difference in meaning or usage. In the Wing Shooters there is an informal difference. The second L is a sign of respect. These gentleman, our four Marshalls, have earned it.
PASSPORT CLUB by Dr. Patsy Warmack, President November 9th (Please note this will be the 2nd Thursday of the month): Peter Plumb, Sailing Greenland. June, 2022 Peter Plumb and most of his family and some friends chartered a 75’ steel schooner, the “Sky Dancer”, to explore parts of the West coast of Greenland. The cruise centered around Disko Bay north of the Arctic Circle. The mission of the Passport Club is to share travel experiences, plans, and bucket lists for travel domestic or international; by land, sea or air; self-drive or sit back and let others do the work.

ith epic gatherings in New Hampshire early August and Massachusetts early September, Ken and Corrine St. Jean decided to add on to their RV trip all manner of visits to family, old friends, and familial roots on a historic “Past is Prologue” adventure.
View from Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island
Florida to Canadian Maritimes
They spent 2 months on the road with their Maine Coon Cat, Misha, in their motorhome (towing their Jeep) from Florida to the Canadian Maritimes.
St. Jean's with one of many lobsters at Shediak PEI
St. Jean's rig - Newmar New Aire & Jeep The St. Jean’s traveled over 5000 miles in the RV, another 3000 in the Jeep and even 24 Nautical Miles on Ferries. They set up at 30 campgrounds along the way and used the Jeep to explore an average of 100 miles around each location, taking advantage of every minute to create lots of “moments” and memories. From the Magnetic Hill and Bay of Fundy in Montauk, New Brunswick, to the warm waters of the Northumberland Straight and rusty red soil of Prince Edward Island (PEI, Corrine’s roots), to Peggy’s Cove near Halifax Nova Scotia (NS), the most breathtaking vistas of all of the Canadian highlights was the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island, NS. Throughout the trip, besides the primary tributes to the past, they enjoyed large quantities of lobster and haddock, poutine (fries with brown gravy and cheese curds) and “tiny Maine blueberry” pies. You’ll have to ask them about their “border crossing” experience.
