It was so lovely to welcome the children back to school on Monday and hear about all the exciting adventures they had enjoyed over the Easter break. It’s hard to believe we are now in the final term of the school year and with so much to fit in, this is going to be an extremely busy and exciting summer term ahead.
On Monday the children were introduced to their theme for this term. The theme across Year 1-3 is ‘Who Do You Think You Are’?. In Year 1 they will focus on three texts, Emmanuel’s Dream, All the Ways to be Smart and The Invisible. In Year 2 the theme is The Travelling School and in Year 3, Ancient Egyptian Adventures. In Reception the children will learn about Lifecycles, focussing on plants and growing.
Year 2 began the week in Paris, as their classrooms had transitioned over the Easter break into French inspired environments. They created a café roll play area where they could purchase croissants and learn how to pay for items using British currency. Mr Draper also popped along to teach them some French phrases and explain about the different landmarks in France. He was very impressed with how quickly they picked up the French phrases, so much so he almost thought he popped across the Channel at one point!
people in care and community settings across York. This is such a wonderful charity for the children to become involved with. They had so much fun singing and playing musical games with member of the Honeysuckle Singers Group. My huge thanks to Mrs Hayden for arranging this community event and to Mrs Hall, Mrs Franey and all of 2H. 2P will be visiting the group next Wednesday and 2J will go on Wednesday 10th May.
We have also enjoyed Year 1 Class Assemblies this week, starting with 1C on Wednesday, 1A, Thursday and 1E, Friday. It was wonderful so see so many parents and family members in school enjoying the performances and I was so impressed with how confident the children were. My thanks to all the Year 1 team and Mrs Hayden for preparing the children so brilliantly.
Undeterred by the drop in temperature, Reception visited RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate on Thursday. They had a wonderful day exploring the gardens, lakes, sculptures and beehives. They also participated in a workshop where they learned all about how plants grow. No trip to Harlow Carr would be complete without visiting the three play parks on site and I gather the children had a wonderful time burning off some excess energy as they explored these! What a wonderful trip, I only wish I could have joined them.
delighted to share photos of staff and parents from 2-8 who took part later in the newsletter. Well done also to Georgia from 2J who represented Yorkshire Tennis over the holidays in the Under 8’s county club division and also to Caleb in 3C who passed his drum exam with a high merit. These really are wonderful achievements to celebrate.

Mrs Smith and Mrs Rule who lead the group are delighted with the new equipment and I believe that this was particularly well received by all the children who popped along on Thursday morning.
Congratulations to all staff and parents/carers across St Peter’s 2-18 who ran the London Marathon last Sunday. I believe this year saw somewhere in the region of 48,000 runners taking part, running the 26 mile route, raising millions of pounds for charity. This is a fantastic achievement, and we are
On Friday 5th May, staff and children of St Peter’s 2-18 will be celebrating the King’s Coronation and are encouraged to dress in red, white and blue to mark the occasion. Children can either do this in home clothes or uniform and use accessories. We will also be holding a special coronation picnic in the afternoon which I’m sure will be wonderful.
Just a reminder that school is open as normal on Monday and also apologies for any confusion from the Tuesday Reminder, regarding school finish times on Friday 5th May. School and clubs will be on as normal with After School Care running until 6pm. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,

It has been lovely to have all the children back into school this week, showing great enthusiasm towards their new sports this term.
The children from Reception to Year 3 have started Athletics in their Core PE lessons this term. This week's focus was on sprinting technique. The children took part in Miss Flockhart’s sprinting experiment, to detect what the most effective sprinting technique should look like. The children discovered the following three key points:
1. Moving their hands from cheek to cheek.
2. Light on their feet whilst driving their legs forwards.
3. To ensure they’re focussing on looking forwards, not side to side.
Miss Flockhart was extremely impressed with how well the children sprinted and their Rita Resilience they demonstrated throughout all of the races! The majority of all of the children improved their time from last year, some by 3 seconds which is a fantastic achievement!
Nursery have focused on their rolling skills this week. They started by sitting on the floor, pushing their ball out in front to roll. They then had to chase after the ball to stop it and bring their ball back to the starting line to have another go. The children then progressed this skill onto rolling their ball to a partner, whilst moving back to make it slightly harder.
The children then tried to roll their ball from a kneeling position. Miss Flockhart was incredibly proud how quickly the children progress their rolling technique.
P.E.
Year 1 to Year 3 have started cricket in their games lessons. With the focus being fielding for Year 1 and 2. Creating a coned gate in the middle, for each pair to attempt to roll their ball through the middle of the coned gate. If the pair managed to roll their ball successfully 6 times through the coned gate in the middle, they could make the gate narrower. Year 3 worked on an underarm throwing technique and catching. Their challenge was to practice their throwing and catching skills with a partner. It was brilliant to see the children supporting one another in their partners and congratulating one another when they managed to hit the wicket.
Finally, Reception are taking part in teamwork games during their Games lessons this term. They focused on a game called treasure island. Which allowed the children to revisit their throwing and catching skills and balancing a beanbag on their head. It was fantastic to see the children communicating with one another to work as a team.
The children have had a busy first week back settling into their new sports. Miss Flockhart has been incredibly impressed how they have taken on difficult challenges within their stride and cannot wait to see what they can achieve in the coming weeks.

MUSIC
Musical Notes
On Wednesday 2H visited the Honeysuckle Singers group to take part in a Musical Connections workshop.
We were so proud of the children who were really lovely with all the people who go to this group. The children were so polite, they made sure they spoke to all the grown ups, and it didn't take very long before they were all chatting away making new friends.
In the session they had lots of fun singing, playing musical games and there was lots of flag waving in preparation for the King's Coronation. The children finished the session with a new song Sing for the King!
Musical Connections is a York charity which runs valuable music sessions around the city in residential homes, sheltered housing and drop in sessions for older residents who are a little more mobile and independent. The children really did bring a lot of smiles to the group and they are now very much looking forward to 2P's visit next week and 2J's visit the week after. Well done 2H, you were the perfect ambassadors for St Peter's 2-8!
As the term gets underway we are very much looking forward to our three concerts in the final week, please see the details below.
Many thanks to all the parents who have already signed their children up to play!
Year 1 - on Monday 22nd May at 2pm we will be holding a concert for parents. All Year 1 children will be taking part either singing or playing their recorder if they have lessons with Ms Leaman-Brown. For our instrumentalists it will be their very first concert performing in front of an audience so I am sure the children will be very excited. We look forward to welcoming you into school!
Year 2 - on Tuesday 23rd May at 1.30pm we will be holding a concert for our Year 2 instrumentalists. If your child has instrumental lessons in school and you would like them to perform in the concert, please can you email me
a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk so I can pop them on my list?
Our choir will also be performing at this concert too and we are very much looking forward to welcoming you into school.
Year 3 - on Wednesday 24th May at 1.30pm we will be holding a concert for our Year 3 instrumentalists. If your child has instrumental lessons in school and you would like them to perform in the concert, please can you email me
a.hayden@stpetersyork.org.uk so I can pop them on my list?
Our choir will also be performing at this concert too and we are very much looking forward to welcoming you into school.

Very soon we will be witnessing the coronation of King Charles lll. It is a very significant moment in history and so our classroom has been decorated with the Union Jack and we have red, white, and blue all over our classroom.
The children have been making endless cups of tea for the Kings garden Party and our sand tray has been filled with treasures.... perhaps the crowned jewels!
The Acorns have loved using their diggers and dump trucks to find the treasure that has been well hidden. The children have enjoyed dressing up in anticipation of the coronation and we have many beautiful princesses in our midst. We have attempted to create our own Union Jack flags using food colouring on white bread.
On our adventures to Forest school, we found as many pretty things as we could to decorate our crowns. The dandelions and daisies were a favourite. It has been a lovely week in Acorns and next week we are looking forward to a very special picnic to celebrate the new King!

Reception
Wow what a busy first week back! It was so lovely to have all the children back in the classroom on Monday and to hear of all their exciting adventures over the Easter break.
We have looked at numbers 11-20 in maths exploring the composition of these numbers in tens and ones.
In phonics we have learnt new tricky words and have been superstars reading and writing cvcc words using our phonic knowledge.
Down at Forest school, we continued our learning of numbers 11-20 by making leaf kebabs. The children had to find a number written on a tree and then find the corresponding number of leaves for their kebabs. Some excellent number recognition and counting skills!
But without a doubt our highlight of the week has to be our trip to Harlow Carr gardens in Harrogate. After the excitement of the coach journey, the children had the opportunity to explore the gardens, observing the different plants, trees and flowers. We saw bee hives, sculptures, lakes and rivers, and not forgetting the three play parks! Our workshop was all about how plants grow and all of the children listened carefully as they were told about the parts of a plant and what they need to be healthy. We went to the greenhouse and had a go at some gardening ourselves . One by one, the children planted their flower seed into a small pot of compost. These will be at school so we can watch them grow.
All of the children behaved very well and we are all so proud of them! Thank you to all the staff helpers on our trip!
Reception
What a fabulous first week back we have had in Year 1! We have thoroughly enjoyed immersing ourselves in our new topic; Who Do You Think You Are?
This week we have learnt all about an inspirational person called Emmanuel Yeboah, who cycled 400 hundred miles around Ghana with just one leg. We have been studying maps of Ghana and designing and building our own bike tracks using distance place holders in miles. We have loved learning about cubism art this week and making our own cubist bike art! We carefully designed a representation of a bike using different 2D shapes, before mixing different shades of the same colour to carefully shade each shape.
We have made the most of the sunny afternoons and opened our very own bike workshop in the Year 1 outdoor area. In this area we have been learning about the different bike parts and how to dismantle and rebuild bikes with a range of tools.
The highlight of our week has definitely been performing in our class assemblies and showcasing all the wonderful learning from last term. We hope you loved our performances as much as we did!
It’s hard to believe that we have only been back at school for 1 week! The children were very excited on Monday morning to return to French themed classrooms!
We have written postcards from Libby about her first day in Paris and in art we have drawn oil pastel copies of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers.
We have started to read our new text, a mystery called ‘Libby and the Parisian Puzzle’ which is part of the Travelling School series. We are planning to ‘travel’ further but are currently immersed in all things French and Parisian.
Monday started brilliantly with a French lesson from Mr Draper. He taught the children phrases to use in our café role play area and they also learnt about the different famous landmarks in Paris. The café is also helping us to learn about money (British money!) as we are buying croissants, working out the change and writing receipts!
On Wednesday, 2H were the first class to visit the Honeysuckle Singers, a small drop in choir in York. We went as part of our work with the charity Musical Connections and sang songs with our new friends, as well as singing to them. The children greatly enjoyed this session and it was lovely to see them being so warm and open with the group. Mrs Franey and I were very proud of them.
I wonder what excitement next week will bring?!
YearThree
It has been an exciting first week of the Summer term in Year 3! Our new text ‘The Ancient Egypt Sleepover’ by Stephen Davies is all about a young boy called Mo who has arrived at the British Museum for an exciting sleep over. This week has been all about London, the setting of our story. We have been exploring its famous landmarks, the geography of the city and finding out exciting facts. We have used coordinates to map read and find locations, as well as honing our artistic skills with sketches and ink drawings. Things are really starting to hot up in the story and we can’t wait to pursue the adventure further with Mo next week! In maths we have been refreshing our knowledge of telling the time. We have been reading and drawing times to specific minutes and used the small clocks to support our learning. We will continue to explore time next week, focussing on AM/PM and the 24hr clock. We are also very excited to be heading off on our residential trip next Thursday to Newby Wiske Hall. Stay tuned to read all about it!
