PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
all Members to keep a close eye for the EDMs and announcements over the coming weeks. To keep our community safe, please be reminded that Members should not come to the Club if they have a fever or are otherwise unwell. As a precautionary measure, we strongly encourage Club Members and their guests who have recently travelled within the last 14 days to refrain from coming to the Club. The Lunar New Year has just passed, and we are already into the second quarter of the year. I hope the year is going well for all and the New Year’s resolutions have been attained or are at least in progress.
Dear Members, I am sure you will agree that these are unprecedented times in Singapore and the world, given the situation with COVID-19 and the Club has been working hard to keep its Members and staff as safe as possible. Following the heightened risk posture of DORSCON Orange, the Club is following the various advices by the Ministry of Health (MOH), including temperature screening and online registration for all guests when they come to the Club in support of incident tracing. The online registration can be completed via the iPads provided at the Reception and Scores Sports Bar & Restaurant; or through scanning of the QR code on notices around the Club.
March was a particularly busy month around the Club as we celebrated International Women’s Day, Shrove Tuesday, St. Patrick’s Day and Mothering Sunday. These events were well received, and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves despite the situation. This month, expect nothing less as we bring you Easter Sunday. Apart from that, we also have our regular Wine & Gourmet dinner. Clinton Ang, third generation owner of the oldest wine and spirits merchant in South East Asia will grace the event on Friday, 25 April. Our chefs will be putting together a special pairing menu, and Clinton will be showcasing various varietals of the Siglo wines.
dinner, Jeff will be putting together a curated tasting menu featuring exceptional meals and premium pairing wines from Australia. I am pleased to note that many of our existing Members have introduced their friends to the Club. You are the best ambassadors for your Club and there is no better reason to use the Club than to relax with your friends. As a thank you, Members whose friends sign up for Club membership from now till end of May will receive a catering package worth up to $550 for each successful referral. This month, there are magazine articles contributed by Members of the Tennis, Squash and Football sections. If you have an interest and would like to understand more, or like to join the various sports sections, do not hesitate to contact the respective convenors or the sports team and they will be happy to assist. You can find the contact details in the magazine. Finally, I want to thank the staff of the British Club for their amazing support in these difficult times and of course thanks to you, our loyal Members for supporting the Club and helping to make it a safe haven for us all.

GM’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, Due to the current COVID-19 situation, we had to postpone several events recently mainly due to travel restrictions of our visiting overseas guests. These included the Bali Chef, Mammy’s Boys Comedy dinner, the Wine Dinner, Paul McVeigh Speaker Series and Whose Line is it Anyway? We will endeavour to reschedule these events later in the year. Also due to the unexpected border closure with Malaysia last month, many of our operational employees were affected. So as a result, we have temporarily closed the Mountbatten and Scores. At the time of writing, we expect this to be for a two-week period and to be back to normal operations from 1 April. Thank you to all Members for your understanding and support during this challenging time. Kicking things off in early April we have the Saito Sake Pairing Dinner and Glengoyne Whisky Tasting which will definitely appeal to connoisseurs so drop by for a glass, or two. Up next, I would like to draw your attention to Earth Day. As many of you are aware, the Club has progressively been working towards a more sustainable and eco-friendlier environment. Find out what the Sustainability Committee has in the pipeline for the Club on page 15. If you are one to plan ahead, international Mother’s Day will fall on 10 May and the Club will be offering special set lunches for the dearest of them all. More
information on the mentioned events can be found in this month’s magazine issue, so flip through to find out more. We will also be welcoming Michelin-starred Chef, Jeff Baker to the Club. Jeff will be our Chef in Residence at the Mountbatten Bar and Grill exclusively for four nights in May. Jeff will also be working together with award-winning Chief Winemaker, Julian Langworthy to create a curated tasting menu featuring exceptional meals and premium pairing wines for the Wine & Gourmet Dinner. At this time, the Club strongly advises all families to take necessary precautions to help prevent any further spread of COVID-19. If you or your children have high temperatures or display any flu-type symptoms, we strongly urge you to stay at home and seek medical attention. The Club has also increased its cleaning and sanitising frequency since February. We have expended hand sanitisers to more areas of the Club, including both the main entrance to the Club and the Sports Centre. Do stay positive and safe.

In years gone by there were a number of destinations which proved popular for British expatriates’ retiring. These tend to fall into two camps – a return home to the UK after time overseas or the decision to move to a sunnier, warmer climate such as one of the Mediterranean hotspots, or perhaps to a Commonwealth country such as New Zealand or Canada. It’s important to note that there may be barriers to entry for your ideal location and a range of residency and citizenship schemes to take account of, as well as the tax and financial considerations of each jurisdiction. Citizenship-byInvestment or golden visa programs can be an attractive option, and by holding a second passport or residence permit you can enjoy greater travel mobility and settlement freedom. A range of opportunities are available with over 100 countries now offering some form of investment migration programme to encourage foreigners to choose them as a home, in exchange for a significant investment. A few of the most interesting, and up and coming, retirement destinations include:
Australia
The UK connection
Choosing to retire in Australia can offer a relaxed pace of life, English language, warm climate and plenty to explore. An investment of AUD 1.5 million in government bonds will secure a four-year provisional visa that provides a path to permanent residence after the four years is up — provided that you meet the residential requirements.
The tax you pay in your chosen retirement destination may differ greatly. It is worth noting that you may also have an ongoing liability to UK tax, particularly if you retain a UK property or make frequent visits back home which impact on your non-resident status. It’s also useful to check whether your retirement destination has a friendly tax agreement with the UK.
Malaysia Malaysia offers a true multi-ethnic, multicultural, and multi-lingual society and can be an attractive option for retirees. There is no age limit or residence requirement, as long as you have proof of bankable assets, offshore income, can deposit a minimum amount of MYR 300,000 (approximately USD 72,500) in the Malaysian bank account for 10 years (that amount is halved if you’re above 50 years old), undertake a medical test and purchase medical insurance. Portugal This Mediterranean favourite provides a pleasant climate and reasonably priced property, all within easy reach of the UK. The Portuguese government has launched a Golden Residence Permit Program, to encourage foreigners to the country when making a significant capital transfer or purchasing a property from as low as EUR 350,000. Thailand
A question of domicile Domicile is one area which very much matters if you choose to retire abroad. Your domicile is assigned to you at your time of birth, and stays with you throughout your life, regardless of whether you are resident or not in a particular country. Those with a British domicile will be liable to UK Inheritance Tax, no matter where they live, and pass away. It is possible to change your domicile, but it is a significant undertaking. As a result, considering your estate planning as part of your decision to retire away from the UK will be important. No matter where you choose to retire, it is important to plan ahead and take advice from international experts to ensure that your tax and financial affairs are properly structured. This will then leave you free to enjoy the exciting lifestyle on offer in your chosen new home.
The warm, tropical climate, focus on well-being with excellent medical facilities and low cost of living make Thailand an attractive option for retirees. Five, 10 or 20-year visas are available for a one-time fee of USD 16,000.

MEMBER IN THE SPOTLIGHT For this issue of Member in the Spotlight, we are pleased to feature Jose De Cardoso and his family. Jose is currently the Managing Director for The Swatch Group S.E.A. Read on to find out more about Jose!
How did you find out about the Club, and what made you join? We moved from South Africa to Singapore in 2015 and stayed in a Condo at Sentosa, but decided that we needed more space, so we moved into a landed property near the Botanical Gardens. The home does not have a pool, and our son Kyle (5) loves to be outdoors especially in a pool. We visited a few clubs, and finally we decided on The British Club, as the atmosphere, amenities as well as the great Sunday lunches made it the perfect place for us. Could you share a little about what you do at The Swatch Group? I am the Managing Director for The Swatch Group S.E.A, and we are a subsidiary of our Company in Switzerland. We distribute and sell 14 different brands of watches of ours (From entry price point Swatch, to prestige Brands such as Breguet) into retailers as well as surrounding countries. How often do you come up to the Club and what is your favourite thing to do here? We frequent the Club at least two to three times a week, and our best day is of course Sunday. As a family, we can relax around the pool while our son burns off his what seems to be an unlimited energy whilst swimming and playing. We then sit down to the Sunday lunch as our son loves the buffet, we love the spread that was set out each week and my son wanted to have his birthday held at the Club. Working in the watchmaking industry, do you own many renowned watches? Having worked in the industry for so many years, yes, I do have a small collection of watches. What I can share with you is one of my favourite pieces, which is the Omega “Dark Side of the moon. Lastly, share with us something interesting about yourself (a hobby, interest etc.) My interests involve basketball, gym, cycling and following the F1 schedule. At this stage, I would say my favourite hobby is trying all the different cuisine around Asia.

BRUSHING OF TEETH CAN BE A CHORE TO KIDS Here are 5 ways to make dental hygiene fun for your kids by Dr Jonathan How long should children brush their teeth for? The amount of time that should be spent brushing teeth is one of the things that both adults and kids have in common. The recommended brushing time for adults and kids is for two minutes twice a day.
Chomper Chums - This app aims to gamify the brushing and flossing experience, it teaches good oral health habits and healthy food choices.
Brusheez Little Monsters - Kids start the app by playing with the Little Monsters before brushing begins. The Little Monster characters will then guide your kids through brushing their teeth with music and a two minutes timer. 2. Brushing chart
Tips on entertaining children when brushing their teeth: 1. Countdown Timer
A timer is a great way to visualize how long two minutes is. An hourglass timer is a fun way for children to watch the sand fall, or you can utilize various apps that can be a fun way to keep them engaged.
We like these ones: BrushDJ - The app allows you to choose the music you want to play for the required two minutes, so you and your kids know exactly when to stop brushing.
5. Take the lead
The more you can do to make it less of a ‘chore’ and more of a fun part of their daily routine, the more likely you will be able to convince your children to keep their teeth healthy and cavity free.
A small white board with a chart in your bathroom enables your child to tick off the morning and evening teeth brushing sessions. The chart is section off by day of the week, and by Morning and Evening. Children can tick off each time they brush and may get a prize at the end of the week for two minutes of consistent brushing. Small white boards with erasable pens can be purchase from various outlets including Spotlight or Art Friend.
3. Sing and Dance
Put on their favourite song, hum and dance whilst brushing. The more fun and interactive the activity, the more the child will adopt it as part of their regular routine. It is even better if the song is two minutes in length!
4. Change it up
Try a new toothbrush, use warm water instead of cold or change the flavour of the toothpaste. Sometimes, just by changing the ‘norm’ can be enough to keep your child entertained during the two minutes.

Expat well-being:
HOW TO COPE WITH LONG-DISTANCE ILLNESS AND TRAGEDY For the thousands of expat British Club Members, isolation from extended family can be a confronting and lonely experience. However, most expats are prepared for the challenges of building and maintaining a day-to-day support network in lieu of homeland connections. However, nothing can prepare you for the experience of coping with the illness, tragedy or death of a loved one back home. It is in these moments of despair, helplessness (and often guilt) that each kilometre between here and there can feel like a light-year of emptiness. Tim* received a phone call two days into the New Year; his father, who had been battling ill health for some time, was in hospital after a series of severe strokes. Although he was not close to his father, the implications for Tim were clear; if he did not get on a plane immediately, he may lose any chance of saying his final farewells. But even armed with this knowledge, the choice to travel 8500 kilometres did not come easily. How long would he need to stay? How could he juggle work and family commitments over that time? And did he actually want to go? (*Name changed)
Coping with death, sickness or tragedy in the family is a distressing experience at any time. But for expats, the complications of living far from home can heighten feelings of isolation, guilt and helplessness. Nothing can ease the emotional rollercoaster of these situations – but there are some simple practices that can make you stronger and more resilient as you deal with the distance. Acknowledge your needs From the moment you become aware of an emergency back home, there is an automatic and intense focus on the individual(s) affected; your compassion, support, concern and attention is directed outward, toward others. This is a natural and necessary reaction. However, it is vital for your long-term wellbeing that you also acknowledge you have needs of your own at this time, and take real steps to ensure they are met. In particular, it is wise to ask yourself: • What support do I want at this time, and from whom? • What regrets can I avoid by taking action now? • What expectations are being placed on me that I resent/reject? Go home with a purpose In some situations, the timing around when – or if – to fly home to be with family is self-evident. But in many cases, the trauma or tragedy is a lengthy process and being away from Singapore for the entire time is not feasible. These situations can create an added level of uncertainty and instability. Should you
travel? How long, or how often, can you realistically leave your life to be with loved ones? If you stay, will you miss out on something important? Is it selfish to want to come back to your own life? Having a predetermined purpose if, and when you fly home can help create a sense of certainty and clarity in these situations. Your purpose may be to spring clean someone’s home, assist during a surgery or simply to say your final goodbyes. The vital component is to know what you are hoping to achieve and focus your energies on fulfilling that purpose. With your purpose clearly defined, you will be better able to discern when is the right time to return to your expat life. Invent ways to help One of the most distressing realities of dealing with distance is the inevitable sense of helplessness and often, guilt. However, in today’s connected world, there are many ways you can offer help and support from your base in Singapore. Aside from regular Skype or telephone calls, you may find practical ways to alleviate stress for loved ones back home such as buying home-delivered meals, paying for a gardener or handyman, funding a book-keeper to pay household bills or coordinating a roster of nearby friends and family to make visits. Be inventive and realise that, although the distance may prevent you from holding a loved one’s hand, you have many opportunities to reduce pressure in their daily life. By offering support – even indirectly – you can feel like you are doing something constructive; being helpful; contributing to the healing process. Dealing with the illness or death of a loved one is obviously a time of great grief and stress – and this anguish can be amplified when you are living thousands of kilometres away. Therefore, if you are one of the many expats dealing with this situation, take time to acknowledge your own emotional and spiritual needs. Give yourself permission to be unsure and imperfect in your actions and responses, and keep some compassion for yourself as you nourish and nurture your family ‘back home’.

10 MINUTES WITH THE HEAD MASTER OF THE LITTLE RED DOT’S NEWEST BRITISH SCHOOL, BRIGHTON COLLEGE (SINGAPORE). Paul Wilson has recently moved from his former role as Boarding House Master and Mandarin teacher at Brighton College (UK) to take up the role of Head Master at Brighton College (Singapore). What were your first impressions of Singapore?
Tell us a little bit about UK Brighton College affiliated school here in Singapore Brighton College (Singapore) echoes the offering of our founding school, Brighton College back in the UK: we share its three core values of kindness, curiosity and confidence, and its firmly held belief that it is a strong pastoral system, coupled with a dynamic and talented teaching body, that enables academic success and achievement.
My first impression of Singapore was formed by catching sight from the plane, and it was of the incredible number of tankers anchored in the Singapore Strait. Having always been somewhat bewitched by the world of shipping, this marked The main difference between the an exciting start to my Singaporean schools is the prominence of Mandarin adventure. in the curriculum, with Brighton College (Singapore) adopting a dual language I had been told by some Chinese friends approach from Pre-Nursery through that Singaporeans work very hard and to Year 1, and daily Mandarin lessons that is certainly true, but over the being delivered from Year 1 to Year 6. last 6 months I have come to know a As a Mandarin teacher myself, this is community that loves to make time for something that I am particularly excited friends and family, with eating out and to see as part of our provision. appreciation of food at the heart of many of those social occasions. Visit as many of the schools as you can; going on a tour will give you a really good sense of its provision as well as its culture and ethos. If possible, try to speak to the Head of the school, as they will be fundamental in shaping the values and priorities of that community. Finally, what is your top tip for a family who is starting school for the first time, and how can they ensure their child has a great start? It can be quite emotional thinking about one’s child starting at a new school, but remind yourself of just how amazing the school is, the wonderful opportunities it presents, and let all that enthusiasm and excitement rub off on your children so that they are raring to go! Editor’s Note – Brighton College has been awarded England’s co-educational independent school of Year 2019/2020. At Brighton College, Paul conducts all tours with families personally!
What do you think has helped you settle into Singapore the most? I have been attending a local church here and that has helped make Singapore feel like a real home, it helps me escape that sense of living on the borders by giving me the opportunity to get to know and build friendships with local people. What is your favourite place in Singapore so far and why? I am a real convert to the roof top bar experience, a great way to unwind on a Friday evening. And my favourite is definitely the bar, Smokes and Mirrors, at the top of the National Gallery overlooking the skyscrapers, breath-taking! He became a regular on and Malaysia, including the International Singapore Sevens, and was a regular Concorde, always taking seat A4. On one flight, whilst refuelling in Bahrain, he on the Padang at the Cricket Club. in 1980 he was bestowed the honour of driving that to lead the National Day parade at the National Stadium in front of a crowd of 100,000. He also found an old Willy’s jeep leftover from WWII, restored it with the help of his friend Michael Wong, and at the regular gatherings of the Malaysia Singapore Vintage Car Register (MSVCR), raced the jeep through rubber plantations in Malaysia – great fun, with wonderful memories for the family! The jeep was later commissioned by the BBC for their production of the TV series ‘Tenko’ from 1981-1984. Precious family time was spent exploring the coastline and Kim River on the family’s little boat, and enjoying down time at the Tanglin Club, Yacht Club and Cricket Club.
Any obituary in memory of Mr CKE Lister, Christopher to his friends, would not be complete without mention of his considerable legacy to Singapore.

Christopher and Wendy returned to the UK in 1986 but never lost their close ties and deep friendships with so many people in Singapore. His sincere loyalty and respect for others, combined with his quick wit, had led one of his colleagues from RMCA days to refer to him with great affection as ‘CKE Lister: a true gentleman, who lived life boldly’. He passed away suddenly, on 10 February 2020, in Tahiti, and is deeply missed by Wendy, their 3 children, 8 grandchildren and many friends.
ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS CLUB
What’s in the Plan going forward?
Members often ask what the British Club is doing to be environmentally friendly. This issue comes up on a regular basis and we thought it would be important to list out the achievements and some of the future thinking that we have when we think of practical sustainability.
Quite a lot. The new Sustainability and Management Information (SMI) subcommittee will attempt to identify some of the most important aspects that affect its key stakeholders when we talk about sustainability. We would also like to cement sustainability not only within Club operations but also in the many projects and initiatives that we have planned. For example, this year we are currently looking at significant upgrading works within the Main Club building and these building works are also undertaken with sustainability as part of the consideration.
Is this topic important to the Club? Absolutely. The importance of the environment and socially responsible actions have been a big feature of the Club over the past 2 years. Much has already been achieved in this area. Given the importance of the topic, Steve Walker, the new President as part of his vision for the Club, created a Sustainability Committee. This Committee will have a strategic focus on identifying opportunities to develop the British Club as a sustainable lifestyle choice for Members and corporate customers alike. This committee is chaired by Rajesh Chhabara. What has happened in the past to claim that the Club has been focused on sustainability? If you care to look at our British Club website, hover over the main ‘The Club’ tab, you will find a sub tab featuring a section that is focused on our Corporate Social Responsibility. Here we have also listed out several key developments that have taken place in the Club over the past 18 months. Some of these changes, Members have noticed and sometimes they go unnoticed – both are excellent achievements as there has been acceptance among the general Members and minimal objection. In March 2018, a more deliberate process started to look at sustainability and here, the
CLUB NEWS
Club made the first switch to biodegradable straws. Drinking straws are also no longer provided at our dining outlets unless requested, and this successful maneuver has led to a reduction of 50% in the number of straws used. Later that year, the Club made further changes that included the use of corn bags (replacing PVC bags) for swimming costumes. All plastic bottled water were removed, wooden stirrers were introduced for coffee and tea, and biodegradable containers were sourced for condiments. Many single-use plastic items such as plastic cups, plastic bags, smoothie straws, cutlery and teaspoons were replaced with a sustainable alternative. In 2019, we printed the British Club Magazine on ecofriendly paper, provided options for Members to receive their monthly statement via an online portal to save on printing envelopes and postage, and started to replace many paper-based forms with online options on the website.
As a subcommittee, we are looking at our Club’s usage of power supplies, electricity and water to see how we can create options to find both sustainable and economically friendly solutions. All ideas need to be validated for real benefit and practical implementation. As part of the process, we see interesting initiatives being put forward by Members and staff which we truly welcome. This is what the committee strives to do; to take in all ideas, validate them and then prioritize those considered to be the most valuable. We hope that all Members are aware of the ongoing work in this area and of the many past, positive and planned future changes taking place. Please also feel free to reach out to the General Manager, any member of the Main Committee or the Committee Chair, Rajesh, directly, should you wish to contribute to this important issue or become more directly involved by joining the Sustainability Committee.

SQUASH:
Near Misses, Cold Beers and a Very Big Spoon - Cosmo 2019 By The Boaster
The British Club finished the 2019 Cosmo League season on a high with a solid win at the American Club. That was satisfying in its own right, but also because they had hoped to clinch the title that evening and were thwarted by the wins from Hugo Manning (on his debut), Andrew Vine and Andrew Marshall. While the American Dream of first place was shattered, the British Club’s position in the table was decided before the night began. It certainly wasn’t first, it wasn’t even on the podium and in fact, we were not in the top six. For those not familiar with Cosmo, it’s a seven-team league. The majority of the losses that put us in that position were 2-3, so we were not far away, and with handicaps boosted for 2020 by our underperformance last year, we can dream of a bounce up to the interesting end of the league table. Some individual performances are worth celebrating. Andrew Vine played almost half our fixtures and went 4-2 – he was awarded the “diamond in the rough” prize at the Cosmo dinner (where we also received our enormous wooden spoon). Ben Kiggell and Nick Fell were also regular players (going 3-3 and 2-4). We welcomed a number of Cosmo debutants - Hugo, Matthew Cannon, Stuart Last, Mark Morely and Yomi Benson. They had mixed results but all added to the spirit that makes Cosmo such a highlight of the year. Mark did so well in that regard that he has been ‘promoted’ to the co-captaincy next season. Congratulations! Before the season starts again, we have plenty more competitive squash in store. Friendly fixtures with the Dutch Club and American Club are just around the corner, the monthly social handicap competitions run by Keith Carpenter are thriving, and new members are joining. Our ladies’ section continues to grow and we welcome all who would like to play.

FOR THE LOVE OF TENNIS AND ‘SOCIALISING’ By Donna Williams
The British Club Tennis Section Members love a good excuse to play tennis and socialise over a few chilled beverages. Did you know that the British Club Tennis Section Committee hosts a number of fun socials throughout the year to meet the needs of our Members? They are: • • • • • •
Ladies Ladder Lunch - New Year Social - WITS Ladies Social - Wimbledon Social - Welcome Back Social - Red Hat Social -
January February May June September November
The Tennis Committee works closely with Scores Sports Bar & Restaurant, and the Sports and Recreation Team to make these socials possible and very enjoyable. The best way to get notifications on these events is by joining the Tennis Section and following us on Facebook at BCTennisSection. In addition, you can always get updates from the notice boards at Scores. All levels of players aged 18 and over are welcome! There’s always a little competition involved and prizes to be won as well. Most of the socials are held on Saturday afternoons so you can relax and mingle with fellow Tennis Section Members on and off the court. And thanks to the fabulous team at Scores, we are always well looked after with great food and ice cold drinks! I was fortunate enough to catch up with some of our repeat social participants and here’s what they had to say, “I love the Tennis Socials. No matter what standard you are, it’s always great fun and they serve a mean Aperol Spritz after a hot, sweaty session on the court!” - KB “I enjoy playing with a mix of abilities and genders. All in good spirits, meeting new people and the lovely Margaritas afterwards” - LS “The British Club Tennis Socials are an opportunity to partner with, and play against new and differing tennis skill sets in a friendly & fun environment. Postgame analysis generally happens in Scores afterwards, aided by a glass or two, when your performance on reflection seems so much better.” - ST “I love that we can just rock up, and Coach Williams has it all sorted and we never know what’s coming! Full of fun, surprises, prizes and great tennis. Everyone - Committee, Scores, admin and all levels of players get involved. Best Bit? The complimentary carpark above where we can leave our cars” - LR The Tennis Section welcomes new Members and encourages the existing Members to join in the next Wimbledon Whites social event. In 2019, the BCFC were instrumental in creating a new over-45s Saturday league (a first for Singapore) and so the Equatorial Super-Vets League was born. We are now into our second season of this competition and the tournament is proving to be hugely popular, not least of all for the fact that the post-match bragging rights are always up for grabs between us and our friends at rival clubs! We also compete in 2 open-age Saturday leagues: • Equatorial Qualifying Division • Espzen Saturday Division 3
Despite the COVID-19 precautions that led to the closure of many school pitches in Singapore, we still managed to field 3 teams each Saturday and have seen them all compete well in their leagues. Stay tuned for more regular league updates, as well as player profiles!
