The New Way To Wed
Weddings are changing and we’re here for it. We want to be beside you for all the ups and downs of the journey, so we’ve changed too. Our pages are still filled with wedding know-how and inspo, but we’re doubling down on intention and authenticity. We see you, and we want to help you make your celebration a core life memory. Let’s do this!
As much as planning your nuptials is the best time of your life, it can also be riddled with anxiety, decision fatigue and disagreements. There is no shortage of inspiration out there (or packed into this issue), but the trick is making your day yours. Before you start vision-boarding and booking pros, I want to let you in on a secret: There is no right way to wed. Your wedding day is a celebration of your love and commitment to your future spouse and vice versa.
Looking back on my own “I dos,” I feel good about the compromises I made but even better about the things I insisted on—like writing our own vows and skipping favors. We didn’t have a wedding party, but I still got ready with my best friends and we skipped the after-party in favor of brunch because my husband loves brunch. We did us.
And that’s what this issue is all about—inspiring you to do what’s right for your day. We can tell you what’s trending (page 28) or suggest a glitzy wedding shoe (page 32) or help you plan an epic honeymoon adventure (page 122). But ultimately, the choice is yours. We know there are a lot of those to make, so we’ve rounded up a list of pros we think are changing the wedding space to guide your journey (page 69). We also sat down with Lauren Riihimaki of LaurDIY YouTube fame to get the scoop on why she’s not DIY-ing her wedding (FWIW, we don’t think you should either) and what’s inspiring her. May you feel inspired to chart your own path to the altar.

You’ve Got Mail
Get your guests excited for your nuptials from the start. Nothing beats a snail-mail save-thedate or invite that sets the tone for the celebration. The Knot Paper releases new designs on the regular with a motif fit for every kind of wedding. Your wedding paper is a great place to weave in cultural elements, like opting for a bilingual invite that caters to all your English and non-English-speaking guests. Or incorporate a design that pays homage to your heritage (like the Papel Picado, inspired by the traditional Mexican decorative tissue-paper craft). Paper suites have tons of coordinating elements like table numbers, menus and thank-you notes, taking the guesswork out of nailing a cohesive look.
Sustainability on your mind?
The Knot has a recycled paper option you can feel good about. Oh, and did we mention we’ll send you samples? Our paper needs to be experienced!
Many of our designs come in multiple languages, like ‘Bom Bloom’
‘Papel Picado’ ‘Wildflower Nouveau’Pack Your Bags!
The Knot Registry Store lets you register for, well, just about everything. You can even register for international experiences like a gondola ride in Venice or a slothwatching tour in Costa Rica. Talk about a memorable way to kick off married life!
We Build Dream Teams
You’ll need a few people to bring your wedding dreams to life (FYI most couples hire about 14 vendors). So where do you start? The Knot Marketplace. We have the best pros out there, all organized by expertise (florist, baker, venue) and locale. But our filters are the unsung heroes, full stop. Want to serve Caribbean cuisine at your wedding to reflect your family’s heritage? We’ve got you. Our filters let you winnow down a large volume of pros based on specifics that are authentic to you as a couple. You can read reviews from other couples, connect with pros directly and more.

TIP Consider your venue Where are you saying “I do”? Analyze the existing decor and architecture of the space. Your style should embrace the unique qualities of the wedding site for a cohesive result. 2
TIP Choose a level of formality. A black-
tie soiree calls for different decor than a mellow beach bash. The formality of the wedding influences the overall theme, from attire to flowers and beyond. 3
TIP Start small and stay focused. It’s easy to get carried away once you gather inspiration. Choose what you truly love, not just what’s trending, and be intentional with every decision you make.

Prewedding Beauty Prep
CELEBRITY DERMATOLOGIST MARNIE NUSSBAUM, MD, GAVE US THE SCOOP ON TRENDY TREATMENTS, CREATING A SKIN CARE REGIMEN AND HOW TO HANDLE PREWEDDING SKIN EMERGENCIES .
By Lauren WhalleyQ: In-office treatments are at an all-time high. Why?
A: They’re the quickest way to achieve powerful yet natural skin care results. Whether you’re looking to diminish fine lines and wrinkles, restore elasticity or simply wish to achieve a glowing complexion for your wedding, there’s a treatment option for you.
Q: Fill us in: What are the hottest prewedding beauty treatments at the moment?
A: Botox is always a popular choice as it helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. For those looking to improve overall skin health, the Clear + Brilliant laser treatments will reduce pigmentation and smooth the skin’s texture for healthier looking skin. Then there is the beloved HydraFacial. I recommend coming in for this treatment in the last few weeks before your wedding to help cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate the skin to achieve that glowfrom-within result.
& a
Q: If a to-be-wed is considering Botox or fillers, how soon should they plan ahead?
A: If you want to get Botox and fillers, you should make an appointment with an experienced professional six months prior to the wedding day for your initial treatment. This ensures that we can achieve your desired results and make any necessary adjustments. The treatment can be repeated
four weeks before the wedding to maintain your look once its been perfected.
Q: What’s the best in-office treatment to achieve glowing skin?
A: The HydraFacial leaves the skin looking dewy and glowing. It’s the ultimate treatment to cleanse and exfoliate the skin. The service can easily be added to a targeted treatment plan that includes the use of glycolic acid, salicylic acid and other collagen-inducing serums.
Q: Can you give an example of an easy-toimplement skin care routine?
A: In the morning, I recommend using a glycolic cleanser like my Dr. Marnie’s MD GlyGel Cleanser, followed by exfoliation with my Glow Pads. Then apply the EltaMD Skin Recovery moisturizer and sunscreen. In the evening, use the same glycolic cleanser, a retinoid cream (like the SkinBetter AlphaRet overnight cream) and a night moisturizer to help protect and restore the skin barrier.
Q: How can more laid-back grooms create a basic skin care regimen?
A: SkinBetter makes an amazing product called Solo Hydrating Defense Men. It’s for men who want to care for their skin but don’t want to worry about a multistep regimen.
Q: When is the latest someone should get a facial or other treatment prior to their wedding day?
A: Two weeks before the wedding. You can do a HydraFacial up to one week in advance, since it’s milder.
Q: What are your options if you get a big blemish right before your day?
A: If it’s a really bad pimple, you can quickly treat it with a cortisone shot, which will shrink it within 24 to 48 hours.
Q: What’s the one piece of skin care advice you’d give to engaged couples?
A: The best piece of advice I can give to someone prepping for their big day is to avoid introducing any new skin care products or makeup within two weeks prior to the wedding—you never know how
your skin will respond. It’s also important to remember that, whatever preparations you choose to do, you will look beautiful on your wedding day.
Q: What skin care products are always on your shelf?
A: I love my Dr. Marnie’s GlyGel cleanser and Glow Pads, SkinMedica TNS Advanced + serum and SkinBetter AlphaRet overnight cream.
Q: Let’s not forget the honeymoon! What products should couples pack in their travel bags?
A: SPF! I recommend applying EltaMD UV Restore, EltaMD UV Clear or SunBetter TONE SMART to protect the skin. You can also use the time on your honeymoon flight to focus on postwedding skin recovery with easy-to-apply hydromasks, hydrating serum and eye patches.
Q: How should to-be-weds prep their skin the morning of their wedding?
A: They should do the same routine they’ve been doing in the months leading up to the big day. I do not recommend introducing any new products on the wedding day to prevent unwanted reactions like irritated skin, dryness or peeling.

Dear Lennon…
IN EVERY ISSUE, OUR ADVICE COLUMNIST WILL ANSWER YOUR JUICIEST WEDDING PLANNING QUESTIONS.
FS and I can’t agree on a venue!
Dear Lennon,
My FS and I have very different opinions about our wedding venue. I’m set on a formal ballroom and he’s all about a super-casual space, like a barn or park— just total opposite ends of the spectrum. Every time we start looking at venues, it just ends in an argument. It feels like we can’t move forward with planning until we figure this out. Help!
Frustrated FS
Ok, so you’ve probably already heard the spiel that weddings (and marriage) are all about compromise—and you do have a few options here. Could you opt for a formal wedding venue and a more casual space for the rehearsal dinner so both styles are covered? If not, try starting the venue search from scratch. You and your future spouse can each pick one venue to visit, and then have a wedding planner, friend or family member choose a third space that’s a bit of a wild card—without it being super formal or super casual, but somewhere in the middle. When you tour three spaces, it will likely become clear which option is right for your big day. Oh, and wedding planners can mediate and help you come to an agreement. If you haven’t hired one already, get on that!
Can I kick my brother’s ex out of the wedding party?
Dear Lennon,
At the very beginning of my engagement, I asked my brother’s girlfriend to be a bridesmaid. They’d been together forever, and she was basically part of the family. You can probably guess what happened next—they broke up! We weren’t that close to begin with, and now it would be super awkward for her to be in the wedding party with my brother, let alone attend the wedding at all. Can I ask her to step down?
Ex Future SIL
My guess is that your brother’s ex is probably having similar thoughts and may be looking for a polite way to bow out of the wedding party. Take her out for coffee and a heart-to-heart. Tell her that you totally understand if she feels uncomfortable remaining in the wedding party post-breakup and it’s okay if she’d like to step down. If she doesn’t take the bait, you can say that you’re concerned about your brother’s feelings, and it might be best if she bowed out. Just know that if you encourage or ask her to step down, your relationship is effectively over— which may be for the best anyway, given her breakup with your bro. Also, if she’s already spent money on your wedding, whether it’s to buy a dress or for travel or accommodations, offer to reimburse her.
My MIL is inviting people to my wedding without asking first!
Dear Lennon, I just found out that my future MIL invited six people to attend my wedding without asking me first—and they said yes! I don’t know these people, and they definitely aren’t on the guest list. Can I disinvite them? The wedding is only a few weeks away.
Angry Future DIL
Ugh, this is frustrating! So there’s one question you’ll want to consider: Is your MIL paying for the wedding? If so, then she has a say in who’s invited, and though these last-minute additions are super annoying, she does have ground to stand on. If you and your FS are footing the bill, then your partner can absolutely tell their mom that these additional guests cannot be accommodated, and she’ll have to rescind the invites. Let your FS fight this battle and handle all communication so you can try to maintain a good relationship with your soon-to-be in-laws.

A BUTTERFLY MOTIF SETS THE STAGE FOR WHIMSICAL SPRING NUPTIALS IN THE SWISS ALPS WITH A PUNCHY COLOR PALETTE OF TANGERINE, INDIGO AND LAVENDER.

New Hues
Indigo and burnt orange bring a fresh twist to a standby wedding color palette: navy and gold. For extra pizazz, layer in bursts of lavender and raspberry.
Refined Ruffles
A sculptural neckline complements a bold, rugged mountain backdrop.
Polished Paper
You don’t need dramatic illustrations for an invitation suite to pack a punch. Bold typography anchors this set in a less-is-more way that’s chic and refined.
Twice as Nice
Soft lavender
frosting coated the two-tier dessert, whose inside showcased the fragrant herb as well. To finish, lemon-cream filling sandwiched layers of lavender cake.
Peak Presence
Did you think mountain weddings required a rustic theme? Think again. This whimsical vibe fit the Swiss Alps setting perfectly.
Flower Feel
Texture was the name of the game. Fresh alliums, tweedia, dahlias and carnations paired with dried eucalyptus and bunny tails in the arrangements.

Get the Prenup
IT’S TIME WE SHED THE STIGMA ATTACHED TO PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENTS.
By Esther Lee Illustrations By Abby McCartinNo couple enters marriage believing that their love story will someday end. Statistically, however, one in three will walk down the aisle—and eventually into a courthouse to file their dissolution of marriage. Yet only 5 percent of to-be-weds sign a prenuptial agreement.
A prenup offers protection for both parties if you go your separate ways. Since it’s legally binding within the state of registration, a marital agreement can influence the division of property and debt, or who gets child custody. “The interesting thing about prenups is you expect your partner to be a gold digger, you’re a gold digger yourself, or you don’t think this marriage is going to last,” speculates Tori Dunlap, creator of HerFirst100K. com and author of Financial Feminist. “The truth is that most couples have a prenup already. It is chosen for you by the state. You already have a hard-and-fast legal order of operations of what happens if you separate.”
Our data found that 46 percent of couples describe prenups as “smart,” while another 20 percent perceived these contracts to be “cynical.” Seventeen percent went so far as to call them “pointless.” Prenups have built quite the reputation in pop culture, but we can learn something from the Real Housewives and the Kardashians. While each marriage differs, a solid prenup unifies couples in at least one respect: It encourages communication as you prepare for marriage. If you’re still on the fence about whether to get one, here are 12 scenarios where a prenup may benefit you.
One of you is wealthier or has assets.
You may want to protect your assets if you come into the marriage with a higher financial worth than your spouse.
Julia Rodgers, CEO of HelloPrenup, an online prenuptial agreement service, gives an example of an engaged couple where one party purchased a home and the other party paid rent on it. If the couple divorced, some states might rule that the property should be split between owners.
One or both of you has received sizable gifts.
Let’s say your parents regularly give you money. Even after marriage, they may continue their generosity, but both parties won’t necessarily agree on how to use the funds. “Without a prenuptial agreement, in most states, monetary gifts received during the marriage will be considered marital property,” explains Rodgers. “A prenup allows couples to decide if they would like those monetary gifts to be considered separate property.”
One or both of you will receive an inheritance.
The division of inheritance is a common issue couples will face in marriage. In some states, like Arizona and California, debts and assets (including an inheritance) are divided equally among spouses. “Without a prenuptial agreement, inheritance may or may not be considered marital property,” notes Rodgers. “Many parents who are considering passing down their wealth to their children, either in trusts or other instruments, [are typically] concerned about the prospect of their hard-earned wealth being split during a divorce.”
At least one of you has been married before.
Some circumstances may be different than they were in the first marriage. If you’re bringing assets or monetary commitments into a new marriage (such as child support and multiple properties), you may want to keep them separate from your new spouse’s financial responsibilities.

Whether you’re dreaming of an adults-only party or a family-friendly celebration, it’s possible to fnd exhilaration, rejuvenation and relaxation, all in the same place. And with a beginning like this, the incredible memories you’ll create together will stay with you for a lifetime. Your honeymoon starts the moment you say, “I do!”
At least one of you has children.
Let’s say one party has kids from a previous marriage. A prenup can help you establish what part of the estate would go to the spouse’s children. It also ensures family members have a financial plan in the case of death. Wills are still necessary, but prenups can establish intent from both parties.
One of you has significantly more debt.
If your partner is repaying hefty student loans or acquires extreme credit card debt during your marriage, you probably don’t want to take on that burden after a split. “In a divorce, judges in many states have immense discretion as to how debt should be distributed among the parties,” says Rodgers. “In certain situations, a judge could choose to attribute some of one spouse’s debt to the other, especially in the case where the other party directly benefited from the result of that [loan or purchase].”
You plan to buy property together.
When purchasing a property together, experts still recommend that you keep your initial investments separate. Say acoupleplanstobuyacondotogether, but one party has saved much more for a down payment. “In a divorce, the money that one party contributed to the down payment, although not equal, would likely be considered as ‘transmuted’ or absorbed into the marital estate and split upon sale of the property,” says Rodgers. A prenup can protect those initial investment amounts.
One or both of you are small business owners or entrepreneurs.
Protecting your investments can be important if you own a closely held family business, a business with your name on it or a business with other people. Imagine that one partner is more relaxed with budgeting and also owns a business. Though the rewards are great, there are risks too. “Without a prenuptial agreement, the conservative spouse may be responsible for some of their partner’s business debt and entitled to some of the business,” explains Rodgers. “The most extreme and complex
divorce cases arise when one spouse is a business owner, and the judge deems the other spouse entitled to some of that equity.” In short, it could get very expensive when litigating a divorce.
You want your privacy in the event that your marriage ends.
Nobody wants their personal matters to be leaked to the public, and a prenup can ensure that that won’t happen. Confidentiality clauses are becoming standard in many prenups. They make sure that neither party could disparage the other on social media, television, in any publication (including a memoir) or publicize negative aspects of their marriage or financial lives.
You were engaged for a very short time.
Some couples meet and get married quickly, so a prenup is smart if you don’t know each other that well. Other couples don’t want to talk about it while wedding planning and sign a postnuptial agreement after the marriage is legalized. (By the way, you can get a postnup anytime after you marry.)
One of you doesn’t work or doesn’t plan to work.
If one party will be staying at home to raise a child, for example, the couple can work through an agreement to recognize that individual’s unpaid labor. By agreeing on financial provisions, both parties will have a plan in the event of a divorce.
You believe you choose your destiny.
A prenup provides a sense of peace for couples who simply want to be prepared. “One of the beautiful things about getting a prenup or a postnup is that you and your partner get to decide what happens should you separate, as opposed to the state,” says Dunlap.
Finally, discussing your respective assets and liabilities also promotes communication, a pillar in any healthy relationship. With contractual services available online, there’s little reason not to discuss your financial situation with your partner. Trust us: Sign the prenup before the marriage license.
Only 5% of to-be-weds sign a prenup.

DESIGNER AND NEWLYWED SAVANNAH MILLER REVEALS WHAT INSPIRED HER WEDDING DAY STYLE (HINT: IT’S MEDIEVAL AND ROYAL), DRESSING FOR A SECOND WEDDING AND WHAT SHE THINKS EVERY BRIDE SHOULD KNOW BEFORE THEY HIT THE STORES.
By Shelley BrownWhat inspired your epic wedding dress and cape ensemble? I’ve heard they were based on Arthurian legend, and I’ve got to know more about that.
I am slightly obsessed with both the Russian Empress Catherine the Great and the dress of the Regency Era. I felt those references really elevated my hopelessly romantic notion that I must, at all times, resemble the Lady of the Lake (a Medieval enchantress associated with the Legend of King Arthur). I also love all the textures and luxury of the fabrics that were used in Regency fashion. I looked at old paintings to see examples of incredible cutting techniques that we incorporated into the construction of the satin corset built into my dress. I chose gold satin because it was Christmastime, and I wanted to look like a winter queen. I couldn’t believe it when I found a Chantilly lace where the white threads had been replaced with golden threads, creating the most delicate, sparkling spider’s web of an overdress. I made sure the skirt was super full, with inserted godets and waterfall sleeves that went down to the floor and beyond—there was an excessive amount of lace that felt so romantic and sensual.
Were you at all surprised by what you ended up wearing?
Not at all. After all, I’m a designer. I dream up wedding dresses every day, and I’m really aware of what I love. However, it was a magical experience to put myself in my brides’ shoes and feel how exciting the bespoke design service we offer really is.
What about your second and third dresses?
The second look was the base that sat underneath the Chantilly lace overdress. It had a concealed zip all the way up the side seam, so I could open it up after the ceremony to make it a little more sexy and easy to move in. The third look is from my main collection and is super fun because it’s shorter, so I could really dance. As much as I loved wearing a corset, it was heaven to get into a biascut slip dress and feel easy. I could get on with having a great time at my party without worrying about anyone stepping on my train.
How did you accessorize your three distinct looks?
I wanted to wear crowns from the get-go because it felt like wearing a veil for my second wedding, at age 43, was a bit much. The crowns I chose for the ceremony were from Tilly Thomas Lux. They really stood out to me because they are super contemporary but still romantic. I created bespoke mules with Jimmy Choo in a gorgeous sparkling fabric with a pearl strap for my ceremony. They were incredibly comfortable and had a kitten heel that didn’t make me too tall!
For my first dance, I changed into a diadem from Lelet that had dangling pearls and made me feel like a million dollars. I also changed into some killer stilettos from Manolo Blahnik that had a huge crystal motif snaking up the foot. It was great to unzip that skirt and transform my whole look to something a lot more sexy. For my third look, I took the crowns off and changed into a pair of incredible diamanté chandelier earrings from Jennifer Behr that felt super elegant but also disco!
Did you incorporate any heirlooms to play of the Old World feel of your wedding gown?
I kept my jewelry delicate and wore some gorgeous gold disc earrings made by Heidi Hockenjos. She also constructed a stunning necklace using diamonds from a ring that my mum had given me when I was born that resembled Princess Diana’s engagement ring. I never wore it, so I decided to have the diamonds hung individually on a gold chain with tiny gold discs behind them that were engraved with the initials of 14 of my friends and family.
Second weddings can sometimes be smaller gatherings or less of a fashion moment in general. I love that you went all out for yours. What are your thoughts on dressing for a second wedding?
I think you have to go for it. We were going to keep it small, but then we got completely carried away with it. We’ve both been married before. We wanted to celebrate our love and the miracle that is making wedding vows a second time, fully conscious of what it means to be married.
How involved in the design process were you? (I assume very.) I’d love to hear more about it.
I was completely on top of it from start to finish and I loved every second. It was so fun to design something without having to meet other people’s needs.
Will your wedding gown or any of the looks you wore on your day be incorporated into your collection?
The base dress, now called ‘The Savannah,’ was such a hit that it is going to be in my main line for the bridal market taking place in the spring.
Let’s talk about glam. What inspired your hair and makeup?
I worked with the incredible Wendy Rowe and Dior Beauty for my wedding hair and makeup, which was a total dream. Wendy is an exceptionally talented makeup artist and made me feel like the best version of myself. She also plastered gold glitter under my eyes before the party so that I could really sparkle like a Christmas queen. I kept my hair in its usual style, but had it done by the incredible Jordan Garrett from Hershesons, whom I have known for years. He made me feel polished but still very me. With wedding hair and makeup, I think it’s super important that you look put together but still like yourself, so you don’t give your partner a fright at the altar!

By God’s grace, I received a loving home in America, but I grew up not knowing whose smile I share or whose laugh I have. At times, I’ve wished for a glimmer of my story, a photograph of where I came from. That feeling made me sensitive to the weight heritage holds and the gift photography is.”

Even before the main event, Natalia Renna (28 and a digital marketing strategist) and Zachary (Zach) Nathanson (30 and a small-business owner) infused their wedding weekend with unique personalization. The Los Angeles–based couple invited 210 loved ones to California’s Ojai Valley for three days of festive events to celebrate their marriage. First on deck? A special event that honored their heritage.
Family ties have always been central to the couple’s relationship. So much so that Natalia and Zach looked to their respective family matriarchs for inspiration for the rehearsal dinner.
As a nod to their grandmothers’ Jewish and Italian roots in the Bronx, New York, the couple created an old-school Italian
pizza joint meets Jewish deli in the middle of a field for their prewedding celebration. “Our vision for the rehearsal dinner was to honor our families and heritage, specifically our grandmothers,” says Natalia. While the grandmothers didn’t know each other during their youth, they share similar life journeys.
“We recently discovered that they grew up a few blocks from each other in the Bronx,” Natalia says. “That inspired a theme that tied together Jewish and Italian design components.” Additionally, the Renna family’s food business started as a pizzeria in San Diego, making the rehearsal dinner theme all the more meaningful.
Natalia explains that the inspiration board for this event included “menus and signage from restaurants, pizzerias and delis that fit the look of what we were going for. We envisioned a lot of checkered prints and playful fonts. Our amazing vendors brought everything to life.” The team certainly didn’t disappoint with the red, black and white event.
“We brought in restaurant booths, a 1957 Porsche Speedster, red-and-white checkered tablecloths, a black-and-white dance floor and custom bars to create the vintage feel we wanted,” says Natalia. Vinyl banquettes formed booths that looked right out of an eatery. A backdrop anchoring the vignette showcased photos of relatives going back to the early 1900s. As another nod to the grandmothers, a street sign bore the names of the roads where the women grew up. Natalia says that “everything felt so custom and thoughtful.”
Of course, no Jewish deli meets Italian pizzeria event is complete without a fantastic menu. Guests enjoyed a madeto-order pasta station, while tunes by Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Lou Monte played in the background. Natalia’s grandmother Sara also made her famous pignoli cookies.
And what does one wear to a deli-slashpizzeria event? Natalia rocked a multicolor red-and-orange slip dress befitting the palette. Zach looked dapper in a dark green suit and knit polo.

Don’t limit your wedding registry to physical gifts. Some of our fave influencers share a peek at creative bonding experiences to inspire wedding wish lists everywhere.
The Knot recently invited a crew of engaged content creators to Cedar Lakes Estate in Port Jervis, New York, to help them through the wedding journey. A key element of the trip, planned by XO Moreau, covered wedding registries.
While physical gifts are a mainstay on most registries, many to-be-weds already have plenty of household items. In fact, according to The Knot 2022 Registry Study, 36 percent of couples said one of the top reasons they created a registry was because they valued cash and experiences over tangible items. We took the chance to showcase all the fun and engaging activities couples can register for on The Knot Registry. There’s a gift out there for every couple—and if the lakes and waterways of Port Jervis are calling your name, you could register for an airline gift card to make the perfect postwedding trip a reality.

The Dying Art of Seamstresses
By Esther Lee Illustration By Tiana CrispinoThere’s a mild lull at the intersection of 17th and Broadway in Manhattan. Beyond the inconspicuous building on the northwest corner of Union Square, the streets will soon fill with activity at the end of another week in September 2022. Parsons and New York University students amble through the park in loosefitting cargo pants and fitted tops, a post-pandemic attire trend harkening back to ’90s grunge. It’s the busiest year of weddings ever and I’m about to interrupt someone who’s experiencing the boom in full.
On the sunny fifth floor of the building, I’m greeted by a woman in thick-rimmed glasses: Alzira Michelon, owner of Alzira Hermes Studio, the go-to alterations business for Oscar de la Renta and VIPs. Her studio instantly calms me. Like the gowns she alters, the walls are brushed in an eggshell white, and there’s plush seating in the main room. She hands me a glass of water and explains her efforts to counter what brides typically carry into the space: the chaos of the city and the stress that comes with planning a wedding. In here, visitors find themselves at ease.
“I always want to give the feeling of a good environment,” says Michelon. “They can hear the stress of clients,” she motions to her staffers in the sewing room. “I try to make a very good environment for everyone walking in, to help them relax.”
Michelon and her husband, Reginaldo, first locked eyes in a bar in Brazil and married after a whirlwind courtship. The couple emigrated to the United States in the 1990s, driven by the promise of a green card and a brighter future for their daughter. Their path began at Vera Wang, where Alzira eventually grew into the role of alterations manager. Over the next 10 years, the couple (Reginaldo runs the operations arm of their company) sharpened their business acumen while making new client connections. Today, they independently run their own alterations studio, and they’re a guarded secret among fashion, retail and bridal-industry movers and shakers.
The Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank based in Washington, DC, has found that Brazilians who migrated to the US in the 1980s and ’90s believed they could make four times what they could’ve earned in their native country. Today, Brazilians make up one percent of the immigrants in the US and often bring a valuable skill: alterations and stitching. But trade success stories like the Michelons seem to be growing increasingly rare. The alterations business, specifically, faces a looming crisis: The demand remains high, yet it’s a dying art.
It’s during an industry event that bridal boutique owner Beth Chapman raises her concern. “This story needs to be told,” she says in a clipped tone. “Soon, we won’t have seamstresses to fulfill our orders and both couples and bridal salons are feeling it.” What makes Chapman an authority on the matter? She’sthefounderofTheWhite Dress Society, an industry collective of bridal salon owners, who are on the front lines of the alterations crunch. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 13 percent of garment workers currently hold roles in sewing and tailoring. This percentage has been declining for 20 years, while the demandforalterationsremainssteady. “It’s a lost art,” Chapman laments. “Unfortunately, sewing and alterations work is no longer taught and pursued in this country. I fear that within five years, we’re going to be in a crisis and there might not be enough seamstresses to alter the wedding gowns sold.”
At first, the issue seems straightforward: There are over 45,000 seamstresses working in the US. In 2022, 2.6 million couples got married. A limited or dwindling supply (not restricted to bridal clients), paired with the wedding boom, has resulted in supply-anddemand challenges for both wedding professionals and couples. Or was that it? The more I look into it, the more complex the problem appeared. Isolated from demand, the number of seamstresses has fallen for a variety of
Alterations is an art, after all, and like anything of value, it must be preserved.
THE DEMAND REMAINS HIGH, YET ALTERATIONS IS A FADING DISCIPLINE. WE INVESTIGATE WHY.
The Trump Administration’s immigration policy influenced the availability of labor across many industries, and the results are playing out years later. The steady influx of seamstresses from China, Brazil and other countries provided a reliable supply for decades. The decision to tighten borders stunted the availability of green cards and working visas across industries.
According to the Pew Research Center, approximately 1.1 million migrants entered the US annually during the early 1990s, including the Michelons. Access to a hopeful immigration narrative has shifted over the last several years. “People who don’t have the papers cannot work. Or they’ve stopped coming [to the US] now,” says Alzira. “We all know immigration is political…If they don’t have a visa, they’re illegal.”
“I would say that none of the seamstresses I’ve ever worked with are American born and raised. My family is Iranian,” says Giselle Ghofrani of Belle Atelier in Chicago. Her interest in fashion started young at her mother’s alterations business. “When my mom was growing up, if you didn’t know how to sew, there was something wrong with you. All women knew how to sew.”
Like Michelon, Ghofrani’s story starts with immigration. Her mother, Soheila, was an engineering student in the 1970s when her family’s assets were frozen during the Iranian revolution. Though she came to the US to study, the stitching skills she had learned in Iran helped her earn money. Even in the ’70s, the trade was so valuable that one opportunity led to the next, and Soheila eventually started her own business. Over 40 years later, she is now known as “the Dress Doctor.” Soheila has passed her knowledge to her daughter, who initially pursued another route in fashion. Ultimately, Ghofrani returned home to expand the family business.
Some argue that the point of restricting immigration was to give jobs to Americans. But there lies the issue. The lack of skilled American labor, coupled with reduced inbound talent, is creating a void. Some immigrants were trained in stitching from a young age, and it is rarely taught in US schools. Finding skilled labor is significantly more challenging without immigrants. Then there’s also the issue of sourcing new and young talent.
Chloe Skalli, program director and pattern design instructor at the New York School of Design, argues that the latter is causing even more strain. “As the number of seamstresses in the industry dwindles, the impact is twofold. First, the cost of alterations is driven up due to a scarcity of skilled workers. Second, the turnaround time for alterations is getting longer as the seamstresses become overwhelmed by the demand,” she says.
Alterations is a tough career that requires physical labor and the mental force of paying close attention to every stitch and every loop. “It’s a scary job. We work together to make it easier, but it’s not an easy job,” says Michelon. “I wish I could find more people to train.”
Every seamstress I spoke to shared the same message. Despite steady demand, alterations work is a hard career. “It’s such a specialized skill, because you’re not making something from scratch and you can’t recreate it if you’ve made a mistake,” says Michelon. The work requires precision and experience. “That’s really scary, especially for someone like me to [test run] someone without much experience…As a business owner, you must have patience and trust.”
Scaled correctly, the business can be lucrative, says Melissa Oddo, owner of deMelis Atelier in Higganum, Connecticut. As the founder of Stitched Collective, a communityforpeopleinthebridalsewingindustry,Oddo’s mission is to help independent businesses grow through
reasons, causing the perfect storm.
“None of the seamstresses I’ve ever worked with are American born and raised.”

education and networking opportunities. “It is a different animal, altering,” she muses. A designer friend of hers even says she’d rather avoid altering anything, preferring to make gowns from scratch.
“Awareness is the first step. We need to acknowledge and address the problem as an industry,” Chapman says. “The next step is education. It is important that we teach future generations about this craft and show that it is a lucrative and creative field.” Fashion and trade schools could create training programs devoted to alterations, and seamstresses and tailors could hire talented young workers as apprentices. “There needs to be a level of interest, however, for that to occur,” she says.
Let’s say you’ve mastered the art of stitching. You still have to learn about operations and scaling a business. It’s necessary to manage client expectations and explain the painstaking level of work required. “The hardest part about the job is not just sewing, but it’s also the communication that you have with your client,” adds Ghofrani. “That can be very difficult.”
For decades, retailers provided lucrative compensation packages to seamstresses, sometimes luring them in with twice the pay of momand-pop shops. But today, pay is not the only issue. Many seamstresses have retired or will soon. Their average age is 50, according to the jobs site Zippia.
Young people have long been drawn to the fashion industry. In the 1990s, the booming field attracted college graduates seeking careers and titles with cachet. (Call it the Carrie Bradshaw or Kate Moss effect.) They got jobs as account executives, designers, merchandisers, creative directors and buyers. Thirty years later, a new wave is coming, this time led by Generation Z.
“Bring it to the kids,” enthuses Oddo. “We really want to start getting to a point where more and more people learn at a young age. Take a little sewing class. Ignite that spark.”
Stitching pairs affordability with sustainability, both of which young people value. “When you have the skill to mend clothing or to alter something, you start to care more about quality, and that’s how we beat fast fashion and take it beyond the bridal industry,” says Oddo. “That’s something that I’m always trying to be cognizant of. What do we do next for circular fashion?”
Independent education across social platforms, or content creation, is an industry expected to reach $38.2 billion by 2030. “I see the pandemic as a real gamechanger for Gen Z and its interest in sewing. While other
generations largely reverted to increased ‘mindless’ screen time to distract from the stress, the opposite effect was seen with Gen Z,” Skalli says. “They took to YouTube and other learning platforms to create, not simply kill time. This is evidenced by the boom of ‘SewTok,’ or dedicated channels on TikTok for sewing and tailoring. The desire to create has not been lost on Gen Z, but the way they are learning is different.”
“We are seeing some up-and-coming seamstresses on TikTok and Instagram, and that is encouraging,” adds Chapman. “However, there are just not enough of them to meet the demand. More seamstresses are retiring and leaving the industry than are joining it.”
As long as the diversity in body shapes, sizes and forms exist, we will always need seamstresses. Consumers will always seek fitted clothing across different sizes. Wedding attire specifically is usually made to order, intended to make its wearer feel like the most exquisite being in the room. One dress no longer cuts it. When I stepped into Michelon’s studio, the entire team was focused on altering three gowns for a wedding the next day. Whether to-be-weds are wearing one or five dresses, the business of alterations will always require skilled labor.
If anything, Oddo has a simple plea for those exploring career options or new opportunities. “Pick up a trade. I don’t care if it’s sewing or not, just pick up a trade,” she says. “As a country, the US is down on the trades. We have to appreciate people who work with their hands and everything they do for us. I think it’s going to be uplifting to see where the next generation takes it.”
Alterations is an art, after all, and like anything of value, it must be preserved.

HOW THE KNOT PLANNED A WIZARD OF OZ–THEMED BASH
By Hannah NowackTo celebrate the resilience of couples and wedding vendors after two tough pandemic years, The Knot hosted a gala at Chelsea Industrial in New York City inspired by the iconic fairytale of The Wizard of Oz. The black-tie event recognized everyone’s challenging COVID-era experiences while ushering in hope for the future of weddings. Planned by Magnolia Bluebird Design + Events, the party celebrated perseverance and dedication through the pillars of courage, knowledge and love—topics The Wizard of Oz knows a thing or two about.
Knowledge
Interactive elements are a great way to bring the energy and keep guests enthralled at any party. Lacking a brain, the Scarecrow is on a quest for knowledge and we celebrated him in an area resembling a cornfield. This space wasn’t just thought-provoking to look at, but was also a compelling activity to engage with: An artist painted words onto entertainers as part of the installation as a nod to the journey for higher learning. Guests were even encouraged to take part and jot down notes of reflection on paper slips.
Courage
Even hors d’oeuvres can be a chance to surprise and delight guests. We celebrated the Cowardly Lion’s quest for courage with a topiary-inspired space reminiscent of the kingdom he wanted to lead. While guests enjoyed snacks creatively displayed on trees in the space, they were greeted by moss monkeys hanging from the ceiling as a nod to the tale’s Winged Monkeys.
Love
When it comes to entertainment, think outside the box to make a big impact. We paid homage to the Tin Man, who has no heart, in a metallic silver space. The designers didn’t limit themselves to tin, but got creative with materials like tinsel garlands to add visual depth and intrigue to the space. The star of the show was a larger-than-life silver stiltwalker who beckoned attendees to the poke-bowl station tucked behind curtains of tinsel.

OF LAUR
CRAFTER, CONTENT CREATOR AND ENTREPRENEUR LAURDIY ISN’T DIY-ING HER WEDDING.
BY ESTHER LEE PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC RAY DAVIDSON STYLING BY DEBBIE HSIEHi
It took three apps for Lauren Riihimaki and her fiancé, Jeremy Lewis, to finally reconnect. “This is the most millennial story—probably a lot of others can relate to it,” laughs the crafting expert and content creator behind LaurDIY. She’s in her element: at home in a relaxed crewneck sweatshirt. “He saw me on the dating app Raya…He saw I was single and interested, so he DM’d me on Instagram, but I missed it. I wasn’t following him because we hadn’t crossed paths in many years. Then, I saw him on Hinge.”
When Riihimaki joined dating apps—which, according to The Knot 2022 Real Weddings Study, is now the most popular way engaged couples meet—she wasn’t looking for anything serious. “Whatsoever,” she reiterates. “I had just gotten out of another relationship, and I hadn’t been single since moving to LA…But we went on our first date, and we’ve been pretty much inseparable since then.”
Years before, the LA-based pair had worked together on a project; both were in other relationships at the
time. “We had each other’s contact information, but it still took us three apps to officially cross paths again,” she continues. “I don’t even know if I want to use the words ‘meet-cute,’ but it’s very millennial.”
It also inspires hope that in the madness of supposed missed connections, what’s meant to be will very well be.
Riihimaki’s story begins in Canada. The 29-year-old started her YouTube channel in 2012, while studying in Toronto. She used the platform to share her passion for crafting, as well as the inner workings of her life, and today counts over 8 million subscribers and over 4 million followers on Instagram. Her life has become more than crafts, with fandemonium interest in her authentic reaction videos, her podcast with Lewis, and the adorable life she’s built with her dogs, Diggy and Moose (also social media influencers). But that’s just the tip of the iceberg: HBO Max tapped Riihimaki to host two seasons of Craftopia and, just this winter, she inked a fresh deal with Roku.
What makes her tick isn’t fame. It’s finding long-term comfort for herself and her future family. “Jeremy and I align on so many of the foundational elements of life that lead you to success,” she reflects as she lists them off. “What we want family-wise, career-wise, how we like to travel and how we like to navigate our day-to-day lives. We’re aligned on so much. It felt natural falling into life with him.”
Riihimaki’s engagement was nearly foiled by her nail artist. Lewis had arranged a couple’s weekend in Malibu, which he positioned as his Christmas gift. “Within the same hour Jeremy had initially texted me, my nail girl texts me saying she had to reschedule our appointment to the day before we were supposed to leave,” she recalls. That sparked the excited spiral (something Riihimaki describes as a positive or negative devolving of thoughts) that the proposal would inevitably happen that weekend. Lewis caught wind of his then-girlfriend’s accurate conjecture and casually suggested they move the outing to after the holidays. Though they went ahead with their original plan, Riihimaki was thrown off track.
Imagine a beach picnic, 100 steep steps down an incline and a trail of roses leading to the Pacific Ocean. “Even at that point, there was a large doubting portion of me that thought it might have been for someone else,” Riihimaki recalls of her December engagement. “It was in my mind that someone was getting engaged. As we got closer, I realized it was, in fact, for us. I started crying, ‘It’s not a beach picnic!’ It was the proposal of my dreams.”
"On the day of my wedding, I’d love to just be as present as possible."Hat by Maryam
The push and pull between privacy and public life updates has been an eye-opening process for Riihimaki. “I didn’t go to school for accounting, so learning how to hire my first employee, how to navigate contracts and hiring a manager was very much a learn-as-you-go process,” she reflects. “It’s been a fun journey, learning how to grow and evolve. Now, there are so many creators making content, and you really have to learn how to change with the times: learn the platforms and dive into your analytics to stay on top of your content and your game.”
She’s decided to make her engagement and wedding public. “I’m happy to share so much of it,” she reflects. “A lot of my audience is going through similar life stages, which is really fun…They’ll send me vendors—planners and photographers they’ve used—which is incredible. It feels like a totally different community now that I’m transitioning into this period of my life.”
As Riihimaki has built a reputation for crafting her way through life and creating kitschy decor, why wouldn’t her wedding be the same? The bride-to-be argues the opposite: She wasn’t prepared for the deluge of decisions she had to face so soon. “I was never the type of girl to have her dream wedding planned, nor did I know exactly what I wanted,” she says. For her, it’s been a crash course in wedding planning for beginners. “What decisions do I start making? What’s the first thing to do? When I started looking into inspiration, I questioned whether I wanted neutral tones or a colorful and vibrant wedding.” She pauses, “You have to start making big decisions early.”
As she had this awakening, of sorts, the crafting royal reached a conclusion: LaurDIY will not be DIY-ing her own nuptials. She would compartmentalize work and her personal life. With a lot of her own input, Riihimaki will outsource the professional work to her vendors. Independently, she’ll create wedding crafting content along the lines of “how to embellish your wedding shoes.” (She proudly holds up her latest project for me to see: a pair of simple white pumps, adorned with tiny pearlescent beading and slinky straps.) She also plans to learn calligraphy, partly for the challenge and to see if LaurDIY flourishes can be added to her own wedding.
Even Riihimaki acknowledges her limitations. “I want to focus on making DIY content for other brides,” she says. “On the day of my wedding, I’d love to just be as present as possible—without worrying about whether the floral arrangement I put together is actually up to par with what a professional would’ve done. I am, by no means, a professional. I’d say I’m a master of none, but very creatively inclined to problem-solve anything in the DIY realm.”
You could argue that Riihimaki’s vision for her wedding is better developed than most. Four months into her engagement, she at least has a sense of the setting and creative direction. “We’d like the wedding to be somewhere like Hummingbird Nest Ranch—it’s so beautiful. To have the built-in backdrop of Southern California makes me feel so lucky,” she says. “There’s

Days after her cover shoot, Riihimaki had another wedding occasion to look forward to: her engagement party. “This is my first foray into planning any kind of formal
gathering, to be honest. Even with birthdays, it’s been like, ‘Hey, we’re playing beer pong in our backyard by our pool—come!’” she laughs. “This is a totally different thing. It’s been really exciting picking out the
so much beauty in nature, plus it’s easy to have that backdrop of palm trees against string lights.” There will be fewer than 100 guests. “We both have small families,” she says. “That’s the advice everyone has given me: 100 is the perfect number in terms of being able to enjoy yourself and say hello to every guest.”
The dogs, “100 percent,” will have a role in the wedding. “I’ve already ordered four different colors of bow ties for Moose that hopefully will match the outfits for my cover shoot,” she says. “I’ve also seen these new companies pop up, like wedding dog concierge services…Honestly, we have so many friends and family members who would love to be the Moose and Diggy dogsitters of the wedding, but we want our guests to be as present as possible. We also want our dogs to be there. What’s the happy medium?”
Running a business has taught Riihimaki to be certain about her nos. “I did a video reacting to an old wedding Pinterest board and it was pretty cringey. It was relevant in the times of doughnut walls and Mason jars. It was very timely for what was trending at that time.” She will also skip the bridal shower and garter toss. (“Thinking about having to do that in front of my soon-to-be mother-in-law makes me want to put my head through a wall,” she deadpans.) “But I saw the viral video of a bride who tossed the cat plushie and the recipient had to adopt an animal. That obviously has more commitment to it, but there’s something fun we can incorporate that embraces customs and tradition, that has a more personal spin on it.”

She has a big announcement toward the end of our conversation. “I’m committing to color, 100 percent,” Riihimaki says. “I’m not someone who wears a ton of color, but I think about what my office looks like and there’s color everywhere. It’s spilling with color…Pouring over this decision of color or no color, color or neutral colors, or neutral tones [put it all into perspective]. My friends were like, ‘Lauren, look around. Look at your house. Look at your office and immediate spaces: There’s so much color and so much life breathed into every room through bright vibrant colors.’” Even if she hasn’t processed the connection, her proposed wedding palette of pinks, oranges, blues and purples is an extension of the sunset hues from Lewis’ proposal.
Creativity will be a common theme in Riihimaki’s wedding content, but it’s the power of being present that will shine on the day she exchanges vows. “I’m really excited about making DIY wedding and engagement content over the next year. I would love to be a source of inspiration,” she reflects. “Just having been a wedding guest and seeing my friends go through the wedding planning process, I’ve seen how emotionally and physically draining it can be. I am in a place where I’m able to have the luxury of having a planner who can help me through a lot of it. I plan on being really involved in the planning process and being a part of it. Very hands-on.”
In true LaurDIY fashion, she adds, “But I would love to be able to have little DIY moments.”

Colorful Cart
Every detail, even the transportation, matched the fun aesthetic. The couple arrived at the reception on a teal golf cart decked out with painted tin cans.
Mychaela Miller & Giancarlo Silva
GETTIN’ GROOVY
There’s creative and then there’s absolutely and utterly visionary—and the Southern California beach wedding of Mychaela Miller (32 and a nurse practitioner) and Giancarlo Silva (35 and a media executive) was undeniably the latter. The couple wanted “something very memorable, out of the box, interactive and fun,” and that’s exactly what they got with their colorful retro-meets-mod wedding.
Although they now live in New York City, the couple returned to the sandy beaches of SoCal for their big day. “I grew up in Emerald Bay and have many memories from the times I spent at the beach and park,” shares Mychaela. She grew up playing volleyball with Giancarlo’s sister, but didn’t get close to Giancarlo until they were in college at the University of Southern California. “Our first date was at a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles,” recalls Giancarlo. “What was proposed as a group dinner quickly turned into a date with just the two of us. It became clear there was more spice going on than just the salsa.” Mychaela adds: “Throughout the time Giancarlo and I dated, we spent a lot of summer days at the beach, so it has special meaning for both of us. Also, my grandparents met on the same beach in the 1950s, so Emerald Bay is truly a special place for my extended family.”
The beach wedding (which followed two pandemic postponements) was totally fun
and funky in the very best way, and guests knew what they were in for beforehand, thanks to View-Master invitations. The custom invites included pictures from the couple’s relationship along with brightly colored circular stationery outlining the details of the nuptials.
When the big day arrived, the creative celebration exceeded guests’ expectations. Mychaela and Giancarlo exchanged vows at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Newport Beach, California, before heading to Emerald Bay in Laguna Beach for cocktails, dinner and dancing. After the ceremony, Mychaela says, “the wedding party made a grand entrance at the beach in a vintage black-and-white school bus with ‘Mychaela and Giancarlo Just Got
Married’ printed on the side. Giancarlo and I entered the park on my family’s surfsticker-covered vintage golf cart, complete with brightly painted tin cans trailing from the bumper.”
There were unique details everywhere you looked. For example, a retro colorchanging mood-ring table assignment installation replaced traditional escort cards, seating people based on the color of their ring. Upon arrival at the reception, guests found a wall reading “In the Mood,” where the gloved hands of entertainers extended through holes in the wall and dispensed mood rings. Attendees sat at tables that matched the color or “mood” of the ring they received.
Guests found their seats thanks to cus-
tom vinyl letters on the back of every midcentury modern chair. They also discovered goldfish as part of the table decor, as a nod to Mychaela’s parents’ wedding, which also included goldfish throughout the decor. “Along the center of the three long tables were small bowls containing live goldfish, plus custom porcelain vases decorated with black geometric patterns containing small arrangements,” says Michaela. Additionally, the couple commissioned custom bars that contained goldfish-filled fish tanks and were decked out with the phrases “glass half full” and “glass half empty.” At the end of the wedding, loved ones and vendors took all of the goldfish home. That wasn’t the only gift. “For wedding favors, we had porcelain vases made by a family friend, who is a master potter. As our guests left, they took a vase of their choosing. It has been fun to visit family and friends since then and see the vases in their homes,” notes Mychaela.
The activities and the unique guest experience didn’t stop there. The party also had a vintage foosball table and an art-inspired guest-book prompt. “We have a family tradition of doing ‘squiggles’ at holiday gatherings,” Mychaela explains. “A squiggle is a simple line design that is copied and distributed to the guests, who then incorporate that design into a drawing of their own. This served as our guest book, as everyone created a wedding-themed squiggle.”
The surprise and delight continued with a strolling magician, a custom sandcastle and even an airplane that flew over the event with a congratulatory sign. But there was one last moment of fun the couple didn’t see coming. “My parents surprised everyone (even me and Giancarlo!) with USC’s Trojan Marching Band, who played fight songs,” says Mychaela.
The food was just as notable as the interactive elements. During cocktail hour, guests enjoyed mini popsicles, crab sliders and coconut grilled cheese sandwiches. Later in the evening, in addition to two bars, the couple hired a draft beer truck with IPAs, Mexican lagers and Guinness on tap. Even the soup course got a creative treatment. Mychaela and Giancarlo served tomato soup out of mini cans with a custom label of their last name that resembled the

Campbell’s logo. New York steak (a must for the city dwellers) and lobster came next on the menu. For dessert, the couple took a trip down memory lane. “I surprised Giancarlo by giving the baker the special German chocolate cake recipe that his mom made for his birthday every year,” says Mychaela. “We had several round cakes of various sizes, some with rainbow sprinkles, like Giancarlo’s birthday cakes, andsomewithcoloredshagfrosting.”Tacos and ice cream sandwiches rounded out the offerings as late-night treats.
Beyond the day’s festive details and activities, Mychaela and Giancarlo look back most fondly on a quiet moment they shared together. “One of our favorite moments was between the cocktail hour and the reception,” says Mychaela. “We had a few minutes to ourselves for the first time as husband and wife, and it was special to reflect and take in the sunset before we
continued the celebration. If you’re engaged right now, trust your gut and try not to overthink each decision. People likely won’t remember every little detail, but they will remember the love you shared throughout the day.”
Artistic Flair
Rather than signing their names in a guest book, attendees drew sketches as keepsakes for the couple.
Angelica Laws & Melisa Matthews
SWEET SURPRISE
Imagine this: Your good friends get engaged and invite you to celebrate at a local bar. Except, upon arrival, you learn that you won’t be raising a glass to an upcoming wedding—it’s happening today. To celebrate their love, Angelica Laws (32 and a wedding planner) and Melisa Matthews (34 and a photography teacher) did just that: They planned a surprise reception under the guise of an engagement party. Since Angelica is an event planner herself (you can read more about her work on page 73), she’s seen just about every wedding idea in the book. She also didn’t want to get bogged down with planning, which would make her nuptials feel like work. Angelica and Melisa decided to flip the script and creatively turned their engagement party into a wedding reception, abbreviating their planning journey while surprising loved ones along the way. “The most exciting piece of our wedding was that it was all a surprise,” says Angelica. They invited their closest family and friends to their Rockville, Maryland, backyard that morning for a private ceremony, followed by an ‘engagement party’ that afternoon with additional guests. “It was the only way that I could fully relax, get myself out of planner mode and be present,” Angelica adds. “By shaking up the traditions of a classic wedding, we put our own twist on the day to make it beyond perfect for us.”
Tender Tears
Even though the couple spent most of the morning together getting ready, Angelica (right) kept her dress a secret so she could have a special reveal to Melisa.
Beautiful Blooms
The floral arrangements for the day included clematis, cosmos, delphiniums, lisianthus, tulips, ranunculus and roses.
It was fitting that the backyard of the couple’s first home served as their ceremony venue, because it played a key role in their love story. Melisa recalls the very moment, in that house, when she knew that she and Angelica would be together forever. “While we were sitting on the floor of our empty new house drinking champagne, I knew Angelica would not only share a home with me; we would share an eternity,” says Melisa.
Melisa’s moment of clarity culminated the slow-and-steady growth of their relationship. After initially matching on a dating app (Melisa was Angelica’s first swipe), it took a month before Angelica was ready to say yes to a first date.
Theydatedlong-distance—withAngelica in Silver Spring, Maryland, and Melisa in Charlottesville, Virginia—for the first year of their relationship. “Since we didn’t live in the same city, the buildup for our first date was a slow burn,” recalls Angelica. “After chatting online for a week, we felt comfortable exchanging numbers. From
there, we essentially became pen pals. We were constantly keeping up with one another via phone and text while living our separate lives. It was clear that there was an attraction, but we had both been burned before, so took it slow.”
Finally, Angelica couldn’t resist a first date. She took a risk and drove two-anda-half hours to Melisa’s place. “She made us, quite arguably, the worst stir-fry dinner at her apartment and our now-favorite black walnut old-fashioneds,” Angelica says. “She had a full night out planned for us, starting with a whiskey tasting her friend was hosting and ending the night at a gay bar in downtown Charlottesville. We laughed a lot, grew much more comfortable around one another and danced the night away. The hopeless romantic in me was absolutely smitten.”
Four years later, the couple purchased their first home and decided to use it as their wedding ceremony venue. They invited those dearest to them to “soak in our love story in a place that means
so much to us. We wanted to share our full lives with them as we were about to commit to sharing our lives with each other,” says Angelica.
When thinking about what mattered most to them for their wedding, Angelica and Melisa were keen on keeping the day authentically theirs. “That meant foregoing a lot of the traditional wedding elements and doing what felt right to us,” says Angelica. “We didn’t hide from each other before our ceremony and instead spent time together with our family and friends. We also walked ourselves down the aisle individually, as a stance of us entering into this new phase of our lives completely free.”
The couple infused sentimental details throughout the day. “Melisa is from Suriname, a country in South America, and her first language was Dutch,” Angelica says. “She included some Dutch in her vows and our officiant opened with a few lines in Dutch as well. It was a beautiful way to subtly tie in her past and the language most of her family speaks.” They also incorporated tulips and Dutch blue design elements in honor of Melisa’s family from Holland.
Angelica’s mother died in 2019, and the couple prioritized including her in the day.

They designated a special chair for her in the front row and covered it with flowers and a favorite photo. “When Melisa and I walked down the aisle, we each carried a loose white flower that we placed on her chair,” Angelica says. “We asked our guests to take a moment of silence with us before we began.” She also brought back a childhood tradition. “Every holiday, my mom would take me and my sister to get our nails done. She called them ‘fancy nails’ because she had the artist paint flowers on a few fingers. For our wedding day, I treated myself to ‘fancy nails,’ knowing it would make my mama proud.”
Before the couple’s “engagement party” with their wider friend group, Angelica and Melisa exchanged personal vows in front of their closest family members (and a few of the couple’s chickens as VIPs).
In her vows, Melisa told Angelica that she is “not the woman of my dreams— you’re the woman I couldn’t even imagine existed.” Angelica, who recalls “crying every time I tried putting pen to paper” when crafting her vows, shared that “if I only had you for the rest of my life, I’d consider it a life worthy of living. There’s no ounce of me that wants a life without you.” They both ended their vows the same way, without having discussed it previously: “Angelica/ Melisa, I choose you.”
After officially tying the knot, the couple made their way to Lulu’s Winegarden, a bar in Washington, DC, to surprise their friends. “Melisa shocked the jaws right down from everyonewhenwethankedthemforsharing our wedding day with us,” Angelica says. Then they walked to another favorite bar, American Ice Co., to have a first shot—a pickleback—in lieu of a first dance. “It’s a favorite with our friends and signals the start of ‘one hell of a good time’ for us,” explains Angelica. At the end of the night, the smaller ceremony group had a familystyle dinner at The LINE DC, a nearby hotel. “We laughed, enjoyed each other, listened to some impromptu speeches and soaked in our first meal together as a married couple,” Angelica says.
Cool Collar
Instead of a bouquet or boutonniere, Melisa decked out the lapel of her wedding suit with fresh flowers.
Mudra Patel & Paul Cressman
MAUVE MAGIC
Three months after meeting Mudra Patel (34 and a vice president of product management), Paul Cressman (35 and an attorney) knew he wanted to marry her. “She was such an amazing person, with such a kind heart, and everything just felt so easy with her,” recalls Paul. Had fates not aligned, they might have never met. In 2014, Paul was working as an attorney and living in Philadelphia. Over a long holiday weekend, he visited a friend in New York City and planned to depart on Sunday. Thankfully, the buddy convinced him to stay a little longer, and that night they met up with his girlfriend, who brought along her bestie. And, as any rom-com lover could predict, that best friend was Mudra.
“We were soon connecting over our love of food and wondering where we could get sushi and a burger at the same restaurant,” recalls the couple. After finding one such place with an eclectic-yet-inviting menu, the couple got lost in conversation over their shared interest in everything from science and technology to business and politics. “It was refreshing to have such an organic and easy conversation with another person.”
“Later, we realized we had been talking the whole night,” Mudra says. “At 5:30 in the morning, Paul asked whether I had ever seen the sunrise over New York City. We

walked down to a park on the Hoboken, New Jersey, waterfront and watched the sunrise. It was an amazing way to end the perfect night.”
Roughly four years later, the couple decided it was time to take the next step in theirrelationship.Theytalkedaboutgetting engaged in late 2018, but Paul surprised Mudra by proposing several months early. “The decision to spend your life with your best friend and partner is an easy one, but the actual moment Paul asked me was a special surprise,” says Mudra.
“It was a Friday night after a long work week, and we changed into sweatpants and got ready for dinner,” she recalls. “Paul made dinner and we spent the evening chattingaboutworkandhowmuchweloved each other. I said, ‘You know, it doesn’t matter how, when or if you ask me. It’s moments like these that matter the most.’ Just then,
Paul asked me to grab our sangria and go sit on the patio. I took my big blanket outside whilePaulchangedhisclothesandfollowed me. I made fun of him for putting on a nice shirt, but then he got down on one knee and began to tell me again why he loved me so much. I finally realized what was happening, started laughing and crying, and said an emphatic ‘yes’ (after saying ‘no’ about 10 times in disbelief).”
About a year before their engagement, the couple took a trip to Santa Barbara, California, and fell in love with the town, so it was a simple choice for their destination wedding. Unfortunately, the pandemic
forced them to postpone their wedding and change their original venue. Still, after a three-year planning process, they finally said “I do” in Santa Barbara.
The couple “aimed for an aesthetic that felt elevated, romantic and timeless. Mudra’s style is pretty clean, neutral, classic, and mine is a bit brighter and more vibrant,” says Paul. “Our design felt like a good mix of both of us.”
The wedding weekend included multiple events, each with a distinct feel and color palette. To start, the couple celebrated the mehndi (henna) night with a coastal vibe and a white-and-yellow palette. “Because

Mudra and Paul opted for a shortened Hindu ceremony. They skipped elements that didn’t feel authentic to them and “kept the parts that were rooted in symbols of love, commitment and unity.”

To match the waterfront feel, they each donned deep blue outfits custom-made in India. For the main event, the aesthetic centered on soft shades of pink and neutrals, with lots of lush greenery. And to cap off the weekend, the couple hosted a brunch with a white color palette.
On the day of the ceremony and reception, Mudra and Paul had a first look that ended up being Paul’s favorite moment from the entire wedding. “Until that point, I had heard so much about Mudra’s dress and was waiting to see her all day. When the first look finally came, I had an overwhelming sense of anxiety and excitement. I remember hearing the footsteps behind me and finally being able to turn around to see her. At that moment, she took my breath away. I knew I was there with my best friend, and we were doing it together. This is the moment that sticks in my head and always makes me smile.”
To kick off the ceremony, Paul (decked out in custom attire from Mumbai, India) entered with a traditional baraat—a South Asian groom’s wedding arrival—after which Mudra’s brother escorted her to the mandap (Hindu altar). The couple chose to abbreviatetheirHinduceremonytoabout45 minutes.“Thepandit(Hindupriest)jokingly reminded us of that after he completed the ceremony. We kept the parts that were rooted in symbols of love, commitment and unity,” says Mudra. Because vows aren’t traditionally recited during a Hindu ceremony, the couple opted to exchange handwritten versions after the wedding.
Mudra’s favorite moment was during the reception. “Right before Paul and I gave speeches, I held the mic and looked at everyone I loved and then to Paul. I felt immense gratitude and fullness. It was the first time I got teary and was a beautiful reminder of why people have weddings. Besides celebrating your love, it’s the one time in your life when everyone you love will be in one room looking at you with love.”
Mythical Honeymoon Spots
9 DESTINATIONS TO VISIT BEFORE THEY SOMEDAY DISAPPEAR
By Jen Murphy Illustration by Tiana CrispinoSome of the world’s most beautiful places are fading away and could soon be only paradisiacal memories. Climate change, rising sea levels, erosion, deforestation and other environmental factors are threatening natural wonders like the biodiverse Amazon rainforest and the ice shelves of Antarctica. These are nine destinations you should bump to the top of your travel list before they disappear. To help protect them for future generations, consider offsetting the carbon emissions of your flight through the airline or donating to an environmental organization such as the Rainforest Alliance (Rainforest-Alliance.org) or the Great Barrier Reef Foundation (BarrierReef.org).
Venice, Italy
Why go now: This watery maze of a city is built atop more than 100 islands connected by nearly 400 bridges. As sea levels rise and the foundations of Venice’s centuries-old buildings continue to slowly sink, experts fear the city could be completely submerged by 2100. When to go: Avoid the peak summer crowds (and humidity) and visit between April and June or September and October. How to visit: Arrive by water taxi to the private jetty of The Gritti Palace, a Luxury Collection Hotel. This 15thcentury former palace, once owned by the Doge of Venice, has an unrivaled location overlooking the Grand Canal, 82 rooms decked out in Murano glass and antiques, and an in-house cooking school. From $815; Marriott.com
Essential experiences: Explore the city’s iconic canals on a gondola ride (from $87 for 30 minutes), then pop into the famed Bar Longhi to sip a cocktail from the martini trolley. Bar manager Cristiano Luciani’s signature libation is the wild fennel ’tini. In the evening, catch a show at the renowned opera house Teatro La Fenice TeatrolaFenice.it
The Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Why go now: In the last three decades, the world’s biggest coral reef ecosystem has lost half of its coral cover, and the warming sea continues to bleach coral. When to go: The best visibility for snorkeling and diving is from June to October.
How to visit: Book one of the 14 cottages at Orpheus Island Lodge, a luxe retreat with a palm-fringed white-sand beach and serious eco cred. Its main dive site is home to 1,100 of the 1,500 fish species on the reef. From $4,550 for two nights, all-inclusive; Orpheus.com.au
Essential experiences: Explore and learn about the delicate ecosystem with guided low-tide walks and reef snorkels.
The Galápagos, Ecuador
Why go now: Overfishing threatens to disrupt this fragile marine ecosystem, and the islands’ native flora and fauna are increasingly vulnerable to invasive species.
When to go: The weather is warm and water visibility is crystal clear for snorkeling and diving from December through May.
How to visit: Mass tourism is a concern in the Galápagos. Choose a responsible base like Pikaia Lodge on Santa Cruz Island. Located on the edge of an extinct volcano in the heart of a private giant tortoise reserve, this 29-room, carbon-offsetting Relais & Chateaux property embraces a land-based tourism program that ensures money goes back to local communities. The lodge’s reforestation program offsets carbon dioxide emissions. From $9,200 for three nights, all-inclusive; PikaiaLodge.com
Essential experience: Island-hop aboard Pikaia’s 145-foot yacht. Full-day, naturalist-led excursions are included in your stay. Take in the secluded beach of Tortuga Bay, pristine snorkeling spots and one-of-a-kind wildlife, including the Galápagos blue-footed booby and tiny Galápagos penguin.
Antarctica
Why go now: Nearly 65 percent of Antarctica’s native species, particularly the emperor penguin, could disappear before the end of the century as a result of melting sea ice.
When to go: The short expedition season is November through March, when the sun shines nearly 24 hours. Baby penguin chicks start to hatch in December.
How to visit: Silversea’s Antarctica Bridge tour skips the treacherous two-day sailing across the Drake Passage (and its 40-foot waves) and instead arrives at the White Continent via a scenic two-hour flight. The 200-passenger Silver Endeavor expedition ship has a 1:1 guest-to-staff ratio, butler service for every suite and a fabulous French restaurant. From $43,800 for six nights, all-inclusive; Silversea.com
Essential experience: Book an excursion on a Zodiac boat for an up-close look at massive glowing blue icebergs, Gentoo penguin colonies, and chance encounters with breaching humpbacks and orcas.
The Amazon, Peru
Why go now: Close to 20 percent of the Amazon forest—home to over 3 million species—has been lost in the last 50 years as the result of deforestation, man-made fires and other climate-related threats. When to go: June to November is the dry season. December through May brings sporadic rains but prime wildlife spotting. How to visit: Aqua Expeditions Aria Amazon bills itself as a floating boutique hotel that cruises the main stem of the Amazon River. The boat’s 16 suites have floor-to-ceiling windows, so you can spot pink dolphins from bed. Star chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino showcases Amazonian ingredients in the restaurant. $6,144 for three nights; AquaExpeditions.com Essential experience: Canoe through wildlife-rich Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve and fish for red-bellied piranhas.
The Alps, Switzerland
Why go now: Unless greenhouse emissions are curbed, experts predict the Alps could lose 70 percent of their glacier ice cover by 2100. Book your ski trip now. When to go: The winter season runs from December to early April. Skip the crowds around the holidays.
How to visit: Host of two Winter Olympics, the annual Snow Polo World Cup and thrilling toboggan races, St. Moritz is a snow-sports mecca with a storybook alpine setting and perpetual sunshine. You’ll feel like a celebrity (and probably spot a few too) at Badrutt’s Palace, a glamorous landmark hotel with 10 restaurants, including après hot spot Paradiso, which sits at an elevation of 6,000 feet. From $800 in winter; BadruttsPalace.com
Essential experiences: Get an adrenaline rush as a passenger on St. Moritz’s famed Olympia bobsleigh run ($290). Oenophiles shouldn’t miss a meal in Krug Stübli, the hotel’s rustic 30,000-bottle wine cellar.
The Maldives
Why go now: Scientists predict that 80 percent of this Indian Ocean archipelago of nearly 1,200 islands won’t exist by 2050, due to climate change and rising sea levels.
When to go: Visit between November and April to avoid monsoon season.
How to visit: Located in the South Male Atoll, the newly renovated, adults-only Anantara Veli Maldives Resort offers a choice of beach pool villas, dreamy overwater bungalows, and a wellness villa with daily yoga and personal training sessions. A hydroponic farm supplies ingredients for its half-dozen eateries, including über-romantic Baan Huraa, a Thai restaurant perched on stilts above the lagoon. From $750; Anantara.com Essential experience: Snorkel with nurse sharks, eagle rays and mantas while ogling colorful coral at nearby Vaavu Atoll.
THE RISE OF ADVISORS
By Esther LeeChalk it up to the post-pandemic return of travel. “Revenge travel” has created a need for professional assistance with honeymoon planning. Last year alone, 32% of all couples used a travel agent to plan their honeymoons, according to The Knot Honeymoon Study 2022. What’s more, nearly half of all couples said expert advice was most helpful with planning the honeymoon. After all, you are the VIPs here—let the professionals take care of you.
Why consider a honeymoon advisor?
• Preferred travel and room rates
• Special perks and amenities
• Convenience and ease
• Best-in-class expertise for bespoke experiences (43% of couples said a travel agent influenced their choice of destination)
The Dead Sea, Jordan
Why go now: The salty lake is shrinking by more than 3 feet a year as humans harvest minerals and extract water for drinking and irrigation. When to go: The heat is most tolerable from March to May and September to November.
How to visit: Set on the north side of the mineral-loaded waters, the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea boasts nine swimming pools, a private beach and one of the largest spas in the Middle East. Splurge on the honeymoon suite, which has a private, lake-facing terrace with a Jacuzzi. From $200. Honeymoon suite from $675; Kempinski.com
Essential experiences: Of course, you must float in the Dead Sea. But you should also tack on a visit to the UNESCO-listed archeological wonder Petra. Experience Jordan offers a two-day off-the-beaten-path tour that can be booked privately or with a group and covers 7 to 10 miles of trekking each day to lesser-known sites. From $750; ExperienceJordan.com

New Orleans, Louisiana
Why go now: Storms, erosion and sea level rise will continue to put The Big Easy’s people and historic spaces in peril. When to go: The weather is best in spring and fall. Mardi Gras is typically celebrated in February.
How to visit: Worthy of a Wes Anderson film, 67-room Maison de la Luz feels more like a home than a hotel. There’s a daily wine-and-cheese hour, an intimate cocktail bar and a decadent breakfast (think griddle cakes with passion-fruit curd). The hotel doesn’t serve dinner, but the concierge can make you a reservation at one of NOLA’s top restaurants. From $378; MaisondelaLuz.com
Essential experiences: Catch the last set at Snug Harbor, a cozy jazz bistro just outside the French Quarter, and share the famed hot dog from Dat Dog after the show. If your visit coincides with crawfish season (March to June), grab a few pounds of the boiled crustaceans from Zimmer’s and peel ‘n’ eat them along Lake Pontchartrain.
The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.
