The drug-related knowledge and skills of 2nd year nursing students in Tartu Health Care College
Ireen Bruus MSc, Liina Animägi MPH, Kairi Keidong, Jelena Borodina Abstract The aim of this study was to describe the drug-related skills and knowledge of the 2nd year nursing students in Tartu Health Care College and to determine correlations between nursing students’ skills and knowledge and their sociodemographic characteristics. Several research studies have found that nursing students’ and also nurses’ pharmacological knowledge and skills are insufficient. To ensure patient safety, extensive pharmacological knowledge and skills are required, for this purpose it is essential to teach safe and correct administration of medication so that such knowledge and skills become ingrained already in basic nursing education. A cross-sectional study including 92 second year nursing students was carried out in Tartu Health Care College. Data were collected in spring of 2013 by means of a multiple-choice test. Results and conclusions. Second-year students in Tartu Health Care College scored a maximum of 38 points out of 42 in the test. The lowest score was 20 and the mean score 28.5. 23- to 44-year-old students’ pharmacological knowledge and skills were better compared to those of the 20- to 22-year-old students. The research study was carried out as part of an applied research study “Drugrelated knowledge of 2nd and 4th year students on basic nursing curriculum in Tartu Health Care College”.
