Home Sweet Home, Northern Quarter

CULTURE AND ART Manchester is a key centre for the arts, and you can see exhibitions from some of the world’s most famous artists at the city’s numerous museums, including the Museum of Science and Industry, galleries and performance spaces. Entry is usually free or discounted for students. You can also enjoy wandering down Greater Manchester’s famous canals, admiring the cotton mills which are a proud part of our industrial heritage.

MUSIC AND THEATRE

SPORT

Manchester and Salford have a rich history of producing famous musicians and bands. There are many music venues around the city, such as the Manchester Arena which attracts musicians such as Adele, Ed Sheeran and many other international artists, while the superb Bridgewater Hall is the home of the world-famous Hallé Orchestra. There are four major theatres to choose from, hosting plays, musicals, operas and ballets. The Lowry Theatre, named after the Salford artist LS Lowry, hosts plays, comedy shows, dance performances and gallery exhibitions, and is right on our doorstep next to MediaCityUK.

Manchester is world famous for its sport. The iconic Manchester United Football Club is just five kilometres from our campus, and Old Trafford Cricket Ground is close by too. Manchester City FC is located at Sportcity, where you can play sports including tennis, football and squash and is also home to one of the world’s finest and fastest board tracks at the HSBC UK National Cycling Centre. The UK’s longest indoor ski slope is found in Manchester too – you can go along and enjoy the real snow, even if you don’t want to ski or snowboard!

FOOD Greater Manchester benefits from a huge range of food options. From specialist supermarkets for Chinese and South East Asian foods in China Town, to Rusholme’s ‘curry mile’ offering Indian, South East Asian and Middle Eastern restaurants, Afro-Caribbean food in Cheetham Hill, and award-winning restaurants in the city centre. All tastes and dietary requirements are catered for, and Halal, Kosher, vegetarian and vegan food is widely available. There’s plenty of coffee shops and tea rooms to enjoy with friends too - have you ever tried the famous English Afternoon Tea?

A very broad range of religious communities are represented across the city, and both the city centre and its surrounding areas cater for all major religions. We also offer space and support on our campus for religious practice.

FAMILY FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES For those with kids, you’ve got plenty to keep them entertained. From a visit to historic Tatton Park stately home where you can spot deer roaming freely in the gardens, to a bounce at Inflata Nation, the inflatable theme park. Or why not take them to Chill Factore for a play in real snow? We’ve even got the Salford Museum and Art Gallery on our campus, which has a replica street from the 1800’s.

NATURE Besides the beautiful Peel Park right on campus, Manchester is close to some of the finest nature spots in the country. From Heaton Park, one of the largest municipal parks in Europe, to Fletcher Moss Park & Botanical Gardens, or Sale Water Park, there are many nice places to visit close by. Slightly further afield, the Lake District is famous for its stunning lakes, forests and mountains and its links with Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth, and yummy fudge! The Peak District and Yorkshire Dales are also gorgeous spots for a day trip.

SHOPPING The area boasts one of Europe’s largest shopping malls, the Trafford Centre, as well as a city centre lined with high street stores, designer brands and vintage stores. You can also find lots of specialist goods from around the world.

TRAVEL Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria stations can take you to London in just over two hours and Liverpool in 45 minutes. Manchester Airport has daily flights around the world including direct flights to China, India and the United States. Manchester and Salford have excellent transport links, with Peel Park campus accessible via many bus services. The Metrolink tram runs regularly between MediaCityUK and Manchester city centre. Our teaching and learning facilities are split between our three campuses...

PEEL PARK Our main campus, Peel Park, offers you the best of both worlds: state-of-the-art learning facilities within minutes of a world-class city, set against beautiful green spaces to relax and socialise. On this campus you’ll easily spot our futuristic New Adelphi building, the home of our art, design, music, performance and architecture subjects. Equally as eye-catching though is the Peel building, opened in 1896 and one of our founding buildings, now home to students studying courses in environment and life sciences. Peel Park campus is also home to our new £65 million science, engineering and environment building.

FREDERICK ROAD Frederick Road campus, just ten minutes’ walk from Peel Park, is home to our nursing, midwifery, psychology, social sciences, sports and health sciences courses. Here you’ll find all the facilities you’ll need to equip you with the skills and knowledge you’ll need for a successful and fulfilling career, such as the Patient Simulation Suite, Sports Injury Clinic, Podiatry Clinic and Human Performance Lab.

MEDIACITYUK We are the only university to have a campus at MediaCityUK, the home of TV, digital and creative businesses in the north, including the BBC and ITV. It’s a lively, professional environment, with a wide range of restaurants, bars, shops and leisure facilities, which is expected to double in size in the coming years as the second phase of planned development is completed.

We have a long history of providing people with the tools they need to succeed. We invest heavily in our facilities to ensure you’re using industry-standard equipment during your studies, meaning you’ll graduate with a working knowledge of the practical concepts that you’ll be faced with day to day. We’ve got ambitious plans for the future too and our campus continues to evolve and grow. Our doors are also open to industry, and you’ll often interact with staff from commercial organisations using our facilities for testing products or training their staff. PATIENT SIMULATION SUITE When you train to become a nurse, midwife or allied health professional at Salford, you’ll face real-life scenarios in the safe and supportive environment of our Simulation Suite.

ANECHOIC CHAMBER One of a select few found in the world, and regarded as the quietest place in the north-west, our anechoic chamber provides students, researchers and industry partners with a unique acoustic environment. With no audio reflections, this room is ideal for testing microphones, musical equipment and quiet products. Once you enter the chamber and close the doors, it’s said you can hear your blood circulating!

Set up just like a hospital ward, the suite is equipped with human patient simulators, including two adults, a newborn baby, a child and a birthing mum. You’ll learn how to perform vital procedures that you’ll use throughout your career, under the supervision of trained practitioners. As part of the suite, we also have an immersive simulation room, allowing students to be transported to any environment without having to leave the suite. The technology combines a series of cameras which project realistic images onto the walls, with audio equipment to transform the space into anything from the back of an ambulance to a nightclub, prison cell or family home.

CLIFFORD WHITWORTH LIBRARY Our main library is a modern learning space with PC suites, Mac computers, laptops available for loan, bookable work rooms and café. The library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. So you can study at a time that suits you. You’ll also find study spaces across the University, so a quiet place to work is never far away. THE OCTAVE The Octave is an immersive 3D experience which engages sight, sound and touch and is capable of connecting people from around the world in one single virtual reality. It enables us to rapidly prototype solutions and explore new techniques before they are launched into industry. The Octave is designed to complement and integrate with other specialist facilities across our Peel Park and MediaCityUK campuses.

HUMAN PERFORMANCE LABORATORY The Human Performance Lab is a teaching and research facility used by students on our sport and exercise courses, as well as physiotherapy, podiatry and prosthetics and orthotics. It’s one of the best equipped labs of its kind, containing an extensive range of biomechanical and physiological equipment, including a 30-metre sprint track with inbuilt force platforms, motion capture systems, blood and gas analysis equipment and speed guns. We also

have a separate physiological testing laboratory and fully equipped strength and conditioning suite for recreational exercisers to elite athletes. On campus we have a number of working clinics including, a podiatry and sports injury clinics, counselling centre and prosthetics and orthotics labs. Under the supervision of fully trained staff, our students use state-of-the-art equipment and techniques to provide a wide range of treatments to patients and clients.

BODMER LABORATORY The Bodmer Lab, named after Sir Walter Bodmer, the British scientist behind the mapping of the human genome, is our multimillion-pound hub for students studying biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry and wildlife related courses. The Bodmer Lab gives our students learning experiences using advanced technical equipment in an accessible, interconnected environment. Equipped with a sophisticated AV system and network of screens, the space is designed to ensure that students can clearly see and hear the lecturers and technicians from wherever they are situated.

NEW ADELPHI

is the home of arts and culture on campus, designed to inspire your imagination and spark your curiosity. If you study music, performance, art, design or architecture, you’ll hone your skills in facilities that mirror those used by professionals in the industry.

Artists and designers have their own dedicated workshops, ranging from traditional model making tools to 3D printers and laser cutters. The printing lab contains specialist equipment from screen printers and lithotables to etching presses and felt looms. For architecture students, our carefully designed open plan studio space provides you with an inspiring environment to develop your ideas, work collaboratively and share best practice. All of these facilities allow us and our students to strengthen the relationships we have with industry, including The Lowry, Islington Mill, ITV and the BBC.

The theatre is equipped with the latest lighting, PA equipment and high-powered projection, seating for up to 350 people, and can be adapted to different configurations to suit each individual event. Our professional-quality screen acting studios allow you to film in front of high definition cameras, while the voice acting studio will give you the chance to master a variety of vocal performances used in radio or video game production. Music students have access to six professional recording studios, built using specialist room-within-room construction methods and housing recording booths, Yamaha pianos, drum kits from DW and Gretsch and amplification by Ampeg, Fender and Vox. The adjoining control rooms are extensively equipped with hardware audio processors from Bricasti, Neve and Warm Audio and feature the first six new ‘Heritage Edition’ recording consoles in the country, manufactured by Audient. Primary monitoring is provided by ATC and PMC loudspeakers. Budding photographers can experiment with new techniques in our professional photography studios, which feature lighting equipment, a dark room and the latest cameras and accessories.

JOURNALISM CENTRE MediaCityUK houses our journalism centre, which includes a TV studio, newsroom, radio studio and editing gallery. Here our journalism students produce digital content across multiple channels, developing and honing their reporting and content production skills.

TV STUDIOS We have two TV studios and a green screen area equipped with cameras that can turn the studio into a 3D digital environment, allowing us to achieve effects like those seen on weather reports and children’s television. These facilities are industry-standard and are regularly used by the BBC and other media organisations.

DIGITAL PERFORMANCE LAB Our experimental performance and lecture space is equipped with one of the largest HD screens in Europe and is perfect for showcasing computer gaming, animation and dance performances.

MediaCityUK is home to our student-led broadcast channel, Quays News - our University-wide news channel made by students right here on campus with support from industry professionals and guest editors from the BBC and ITV.

MEDIA CITYUK Every time I step into MediaCityUK it’s just so inspiring. I think it’s also really great that my lecturers are industry professionals which is very motivating, working among people who are in the positions we’re aiming for. unique additive and digital manufacturing hub is made up of the Maker Space and the Morson Engine Room, and is funded by the Salford-based Morson Group - a global leader in technical recruitment and engineering excellence. In this space you can acquire real-world engineering and digital fabrication skills alongside hands-on training, providing the experience that employers want and need in industry.

THE MAKER SPACE The Maker Space is an open lab for students to explore digital fabrication technologies. Students have access to 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters and clean working spaces for assembling projects. There is also a dedicated computer suite for 2D and 3D design (CAD) and electronics workbenches.

THE MORSON ENGINE ROOM The Morson Engine Room is home to heavy duty, industrial grade machinery and equipped with a waterjet cutter, metal additive manufacturing, large format 3D printing, state-of-the-art digital and optical microscopes and reverse engineering metrology instrumentation. Guided by skilled technicians, students can learn how to use and operate these machines to build skills in relation to design for manufacture, assembly and inspection.

The theatre, located in the New Adelphi Building on our Peel Park campus, has an exciting events calendar with live music, art, comedy and performance events. With work on show from established, international touring companies to emerging artists and our own students, we are proud to host a diverse programme with something for everyone. At its heart, our vision is committed to nurturing the emerging talents of our graduates, supporting the work of our postgraduates and fostering partnerships with regional, national and international artists.

HIDDEN GEMS ON CAMPUS

Salford Museum and Art Gallery was the UK’s ‘first free public library’, which opened in January 1850. The building was a mansion house known as Lark Hill, which had been built in the 1790s and has given its name to the museum’s famous Lark Hill Place; a Victorian street within the museum. Today, Salford Museum and Art Gallery presents an exciting programme of permanent displays and changing contemporary exhibitions from its home adjacent to our Peel Building on Peel Park campus. We’d also recommend a visit to the gift shop, which showcases work from local artists and designers, and don’t forget to try one of the café’s homemade cakes!

Engel’s Beard is a sculpture and also a unique bouldering wall at the heart of our Peel Park campus. The sculpture is a symbol of wisdom and learning.

are just over a mile away for Manchester city centre, that’s just a 15 minute walk or five-minutes if you hop on one of the buses which run every few minutes. If you’re travelling by train, Salford Crescent is perfectly placed with four trains to Manchester Piccadilly every hour. If you are travelling to our MediaCityUK campus, you can show your student ID card on the bus to ride for free. Alternatively, if you’re commuting in by tram, there’s a Metrolink stop right outside our MediaCityUK campus. On our campuses we have over 400 spaces for bicycles and there are a number of car parks for those travelling by car.

OUR PARTNERSHIPS We’ve teamed up with a number of sports clubs and institutions from across the region to create opportunities for many of our students. We have a wide-ranging partnership with Salford Red Devils RLFC, with players and club staff studying BSc and MSc courses in Salford Business School and the School of Health and Society, whilst our students take on placements at the club each trimester. We support the club with their pre-season testing, creation and development of their marketing and content, and even organise matchday ‘takeovers’, with several University students going to work for the club after graduation. Similar partnerships exist with other local sports teams, including Sale Sharks (rugby

union), Manchester Storm (ice hockey) and Manchester Giants (basketball). Thanks to our partnership with the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance (MIHP) our students have the opportunity to treat patients within an elite facility. We have set up a public physiotherapy clinic at the Institute where students on our BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy course conduct sessions whilst being mentored and supported by highly experienced physiotherapists. There are many free events, galleries and museums in Salford and Manchester to keep you entertained on a budget, and as a student, you are entitled to discounts in many shops, restaurants and cinemas. TRANSPORT A weekly bus ticket costs about £18*, a single ticket on the tram costs around £3.80* and a weekly tram ticket starts from £10.60*, depending on your destination. Manchester and the surrounding areas are also served by a number of convenient and attractive cycle routes.

BOOKS AND STATIONERY New textbooks for your course can be expensive, so make sure you use the library as much as possible, or buy books second-hand to save money. The on-campus shop sells affordable stationery.

CLOTHES AND GROOMING Things like haircuts and winter coats need to be included in your budget. The best way to find a good deal is to shop around – there are plenty of affordable hairdressers and clothing shops in Manchester, and don’t forget to ask if they offer a student discount! 1 / BEFORE YOU ARRIVE Make sure you hold an unconditional offer and have used your CAS to apply for a Student visa to study in the UK. When you are eligible to register, you will receive an email containing your student ID number (i.e. @01234567) and a PIN number. Follow the link in your registration email and book a Right To Study appointment to provide your immigration documents to the University.

2/W HEN YOU ARRIVE When you arrive in the UK you must attend your Right To Study appointment. It is very important that you bring original versions of the documents asked for in your offer letter. These will include: /Y our passport /Y our visa / Your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) letter from the Home Office telling you where to collect your visa (BRP card) from / Your unconditional offer letter or transcripts from the University of Salford / Any qualifications used to obtain your offer including your English Language qualifications. The University is required by law to hold a copy of these documents to ensure that we can provide proof of your leave to remain in the UK should this information be requested by the Home Office.

3 / AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT Once you have attended the Right To Study appointment, you will be able to complete online registration and finalise payment of your tuition fees. Sneha secured a paid placement with Self Storage Tameside as part of her MSc Digital Marketing programme. The Salford Experience My course is covered over five modules, Digital Marketing and Data Analytics, Online and Offline Consumer Behaviour, Integrated Marketing Communication, Search and Social Media Management and the final module which makes the University of Salford stand apart from its competitors is the Industry Collaboration Project. The Industry Collaboration Project allows you to complete a paid placement as part of your final module. This course doesn’t focus on just one area of the business and hence I will have exposure to all the segments of Digital Marketing. My Placement Experience I am placed with Self Storage Tameside as a Digital Marketing Intern managing two of their important websites. Having found a paid placement during a pandemic and in my area of interest is more than what I could ask for and it is the University of Salford’s careers team that I have to thank. Right from reviewing my CV to sending it to prospective employers, setting up interviews, taking feedback, to all the guidance and help that the careers team has provided is commendable. Placement Highlights I get to use the best in class Digital Marketing tools. I have a daily meeting with the owner of the company where we go through the tasks of the day, look at what revenue we have made and tweak the strategies we have for the next day. My usual day at work is busy with writing blog posts, creating new webpages, managing the website content, PPC and more. I enjoy going to work and taking on new challenges. There are plenty of people out there who absolutely love their careers, and today, I can proudly say I am one of them!

Moulded for the Job Market Writing assignments, working in groups, writing blog posts, researching on topics have all helped me develop my skills. The course has helped me enhance and apply my skills such as time management, decision - making, planning and organising projects and group work, which is an essential part of being an extraordinary employee in today’s competitive job market. After having this placement and gaining the knowledge and experience with the help of my supervisors, I’m sure life after university is going to be a fun ride. 3. Receive and accept your offer After assessing your application, we may send you a conditional offer. This means that you will need to provide additional information, for example, a high school diploma certificate or your final degree result. Details of what additional information is required will be detailed in your conditional offer letter. You must formally accept your offer to confirm your place at the University of Salford.

4. Pay deposit or provide proof of sponsorship / I nternational students must pay a tuition fee deposit of £5,500* before they arrive at the University, and before we can issue a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). /S ponsored students (students with an official financial sponsor) must provide official evidence of financial sponsorship. / You should check at this point if you need a Student visa. 6. Receive CAS and prepare to apply for your visa We will send a draft CAS by email which you must check and confirm the details are correct. Full instructions on this will be fully detailed in the email. You will need your CAS number to apply for a Student visa.

SPONSORED STUDENTS Once you have confirmed by email that the details on your draft CAS are correct, we will send your CAS number to you by email. You will also be required to upload your sponsorship letter. This must be addressed to the University and state exactly how much and for what you are being sponsored for. For example, tuition fees or tuition fees and maintenance.

SELF-FINANCING (NON-SPONSORED) STUDENTS

STUDENTS SUPPORTED BY PARENTS

As part of your CAS request, you will be required to upload your bank statement to demonstrate that you have the required amount of maintenance funds in place before you apply for your visa.

If you are being supported by your parents and you are uploading their bank statements, it will be necessary to upload documentation which supports their relationship to you, for example a birth certificate. Failure to provide any evidence of maintenance will result in your CAS request being denied.

The current level of funds required to prove you can maintain yourself whilst in the UK is £1,023* per month for yourself and £680* per month (each) for your dependant(s), up to a maximum of nine months. If your course duration isn’t given in whole months, the number of months’ maintenance costs you are required to show will be rounded up a month (so, if your course is three months and one week long, you’ll need to show four months’ maintenance costs).

You should not apply for a visa if any of the information on the CAS statement is incorrect as doing so will lead to your Student visa application being refused. When you apply for your Student visa, you will need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) and obtain your IHS number for inclusion on your Student visa application form. MEGHA

Media Psychology graduate, Megha Rahti, from Nepal, loved her course and, most of all, working on a research paper for the BBC! Hi Megha, what did you enjoy most about your course? Without a doubt, my favourite thing about my course was the way it was taught. All my lecturers highly encouraged critical thinking and all our ideas were welcomed with so much respect. We were never addressed as students; we were seen as media psychologists and this made my journey of becoming one feel natural and effortless. We also had amazing labs and equipment which helped us see how things really work in our field. The course also featured multiple guest lecturers, all experts in their respective fields. We really got the best of it all! How did you feel about being so far from home? How did you settle in? I come from a very small town in Nepal. My experience of having to move to India at very young age to study helped me adjust to life in the UK. However, what helped me the most was the warm welcome I received from my lecturers. I was also lucky to be able to make friends straight away! The Student Support services at the University of Salford also went above and beyond to ensure that we were all feeling safe and comfortable at all times. I always felt at home at Salford. Maybe it was because everyone always wants to hold the door open for you, or the amount of intellectually stimulating conversations I had on campus.

My research topic was ‘Love in a Digital Age’. I never thought I would work on a research paper that would be relevant to the BBC! This was such an amazing journey! What are you doing now that you have completed your course? I am currently in the process of setting up my own company and I am looking at India and Nepal as primary locations. I also have plans to pursue a PhD and continue in academia. Lastly, what was your favourite thing about living in Manchester? Easy – Manchester United and match nights!

What was your experience with the BBC like? Right from the start, we had multiple guest lectures from the BBC team whose lectures were highly informative and interactive and gave us an insight into their work life at the BBC. We worked on various projects for them until one day we were told we could choose our dissertation based on some research areas they were interested in and present our findings to them.

PIYUSH

Piyush Bhanu graduated with an MSc in Biomedicine and has now started a company back in India, called Xome Life Sciences, that is developing food intolerance testing kits.

What did you enjoy most about your course? I definitely learned a lot during my studies at Salford. We had courses on enterprising our biotech products and building something for the consumer which would be helpful to them. During the entire course, I learnt about many useful and fascinating topics and interacted with different people, which really opened-up my view of the world around me! What did you do after graduation? I moved back to India and was successful in the bid to receive a grant of £10,000 from the

Indian Government to prototype and develop an intolerance testing kit. Users of the kit will be able to detect foods that they are intolerant to and eliminate these foods from the diet in order to achieve a healthier lifestyle and fitness goals. What are your future plans? Currently, we are developing the prototype and soon we will be applying for patents in the UK and Germany. The next big market for us is there. The UK will certainly be our next stop once we raise to the next round, as I am quite aware of the English market.

CHUKS

Chuks Onwunyi from Nigeria graduated with an MSc in Public Health and is now a Health Policy Analyst in Canada. What was the best thing about your course? The fact that the curriculum covered different aspects of public health. I also enjoyed the mentorship programme which enabled me to meet and work with lecturers with great experience in public health. Also, the lectures were designed to allow engagement with public health experts from different practice areas. This was a great networking opportunity! Can you describe your career path after you graduated? After graduating at Salford, I worked with Healthwatch Manchester in Public Health research,

a role that involved monitoring nutrition and physical activity of children and young people in a bid to reduce obesity. I later worked as a consultant, leading a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded public health program, targeted at improving maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes for 13,500 women in Northern Nigeria. I am now a Health Policy Analyst in Canada. I have led several projects including the development of the Suicide Prevention Framework, an opioid harmreduction policy strategy, and design of the alcohol harm-reduction policy options.

MUAZZAM

Muazzam Deen came from Nairobi in Kenya to Salford (that’s a distance of 6,450 miles!) to study BEng (Hons) Aeronautical Engineering. He says this experience has moulded him into a different person and he has enjoyed every minute of it. Why did you choose the University of Salford? I chose Salford because it has state of the art facilities that are used to conduct experiments relative to the course along with a team of industry experienced lecturers. Salford is also ranked as one of the top universities offering a course in Aeronautical engineering. What’s the best thing about the course? It has truly made me appreciate and understand the amount of thinking and reasoning that is required to make aircraft the way they are. The way the theory is deduced and how it is applied in reality, is what astounds me the most.

What is the support like for international students? askUS has been the go-to place. Services to any inquiries regarding finance, visa/immigration, faith services or even well-being and counselling are provided. Everybody at Salford is friendly and polite. WENWEN

Wenwen Wang, an MA Dance Performance and Professional Practices graduate, came to the UK to study after retiring from the national rhythmic gymnastics team of China from the University of Salford. Since then she has become a television star after appearing on China’s The Greatest Dancer! Hi Wenwen, what experience and skills did you gain at the University of Salford? I learnt to adapt to different dance styles, and I have become more open-minded and versatile after working with different amazing artists with their own uniqueness. I also had the amazing opportunity to join the Emergence Dance Company and work with internationally renowned choreographers and performers.

That has been a memorable moment! It was amazing even though I had some difficulties. I had the shortest time to prepare a new choreography after being in lockdown due to Covid-19, plus I injured myself just before the competition.

Wenwen also won the Dean’s Award at the School of Arts and Media’s Create Student Awards. The award is given to one student every year who has shown outstanding levels of devotion and commitment to their course, contributing to the outputs of the school and wider university, whilst working exceptionally hard to achieve their potential and beyond.

When asked what is next in store for Wenwen, she said: I would love to dance professionally for the next couple of years, maybe even in Europe. Longer term, my goal is to have a studio one day so young dancers have the facilities to grow and learn. Teaching ballet and contemporary dance is also something I would definitely try. Do you think your studies at Salford have prepared you for this? Yes, definitely. I studied dance pedagogy at Salford, and I have also learnt some basic teaching knowledge, for example how to cope with student
