North Caldwell Teen Opens Power Washing Business

J

ohnny Gerecs, 17, of North Caldwell, is an entrepreneur who just launched a power washing business, called Reds Power Washing. Very self-sufficient, he created an LLC, purchased his own equipment, and got his own insurance. He says that he was looking for a steady and flexible way to make an income by working for himself. So far, the teen who has held previous summer jobs in the kitchen at a restaurant, is really enjoying making business connections, and getting his name out there. “Power washing is extremely satisfying work,” says Johnny, who likes sharing with customers before and after photos of his jobs that show how clean surfaces can become through power washing. Reds Power Washing cleans driveways, patios, sidewalks, garbage cans, and more. Johnny offers fair prices, superior quality, and outstanding customer service. For more information, go to redspowerwashing.com or call 973-356-4865.

Fairfield Dad Releases a Series of Patriotic Books for Children

F

airfield resident Steve Clifford has written a series of children’s books called Forgotten Wisdom Books, for ages 5-10, with lessons for the whole family. He says people have lost sight of some basic life lessons that were popular in the past. His four books teach children accountability and ownership of their actions, getting off screens and exploring nature, delayed gratification through discipline, how it’s better to earn something than get it for free, and standing up to bullies. The stories are based on Steve’s experiences, raised by a former Marine and a 5th grade teacher, that he now passes on to his own children. Each book cover has a custom shield and a patch of the same design inside, which children earn once they reach a goal based on the lesson. The books are available on Amazon and at ForgottenWisdomBooks.com.

The Clifford family practices a lesson from a Forgotten Wisdom Book on learning how to stop existing and start living, by enjoying some time together jumping in puddles.

West Orange Teen Launches History Tutoring Services

D

ylan Schatell, 17, of West Orange, has always loved reading about, learning about, talking about, and teaching people about history, social studies, civics, government, geography, and current events. This summer, he will be offering one-on-one, small group, and Zoom tutoring on all things related to these topics for students of all ages. “I am excited to teach people about all of the subjects I love,” says the AP and Honors History high school rising senior. He says that whether someone wants to get a leg up for next year, prevent summer slide, or just learn about history—they will love learning from him. In addition, Dylan, who plans to major in Political Science in college, and enjoy a career in politics, says he looks forward to working with kids, who like him, enjoy talking about these subjects and are looking for a mentor to work with. He can be reached at Dylanschatell@gmail.com.

Montclair Couple Loves Beekeeping

A

melia Teo and Ban Ang of Montclair have a unique hobby—they are beekeepers. They do it for fun and sometimes sell some of the honey to people with seasonal allergies. Ang, who often gets stung by the bees, says that after 5 years of beekeeping, his seasonal allergies are gone. The couple also enjoys making mead, which is honey wine, and honey beer. They say they find it entertaining to watch the bees and feel like they are their pets. “Bees have a great sense of direction,” says Ang. “They go out in the morning to gather pollen and nectar to bring to the hive.” The couple lives near an elementary school and enjoys having the kindergarteners come over to see the hives and taste the honey.

Impact100 Essex Awards $100,000 Impact Grant to Connections at Home By Jackie Schatell

I

mpact100 Essex, a giving circle founded and funded by women in Essex County, awarded its annual $100,000 Impact Grant to Connections at Home (CAH), which has been serving socially isolated, homebound seniors in Essex County since 2014. Now in its sixth year, Impact100 Essex provides transformative grants to nonprofits serving underrepresented communities in Essex County. CAH provides free, easy-to-use computers and tablets, as well as dedicated social worker support. The $100,000 grant will be used to expand its programs to more seniors. “Connections at Home is so excited to receive this generous grant,” says Alex Kent, executive director of CAH. “We are so grateful that Impact100 Essex members recognize the need to support the older generation: senior citizens who are homebound, with little or no family support. They are an invisible part of the population who rarely get any attention or grant funding. It means so much to them that we are able to provide them with a free, easy to use tablet or computer, and connect them with their own social worker, who becomes an advocate and friend.”

Connecting Women. Strengthening Communities.

Pictured here are the Connections at Home team and Impact100 Essex Co-Conveners. Back row, from left: Lynn Kuran, Ann Koenig, Maureen Karsen, Margo Greenfield (Impact100 Essex), Alex Kent, and Ilana Mazur. Seated: Helen Mazarakis (Impact100 Essex).

Helen Mazarakis, a founding co-convener of Impact100 Essex, added “The Impact Grant reveals to us every year the inequities we may not have recognized in our community. We are grateful to support Connections at Home as they connect an overlooked population to the world.” Connections at Home was chosen from among four finalists by Impact100 Essex members. The other finalists for this year’s Impact Grant were Jazz House Kids, Project U.S.E., and the Transformative Education Network (TEN) at Montclair State. These three organizations will

receive grants of $10,000 each. “We are thrilled to celebrate and acknowledge all the finalists for our Impact Grant,” said Jill Edinburg, co-chair, Grants Committee for Impact100 Essex. “These organizations and their leaders are true change-makers addressing the critical and varied needs of Essex County and transforming lives, both young and old. We’re honored to support them.” Impact100 Essex is always looking for new members. To learn more or to become a member, send an email to: membership@impact100essex.org.

North Caldwell Family Shares Their Volunteer Experience at a Bereavement Camp

T

hey say people come into your life for a reason, and that saying embodies the relationship between Lynne Hughes and the Decter family of North Caldwell. Lynne was a camp counselor when Jamie Decter was a child attending summer camp. Fast forward to today, and you will find Lynne at one of her 26 camps across the U.S., helping children who have lost a parent, sibling, or someone significant to begin their healing journey. Mitch and Jamie Decter, or one of their three children, often volunteer by Lynne’s side at Comfort Zone Camp. In 1999, Lynne founded Comfort Zone and held her first bereavement camp in Virginia for children ages 7-17. The tragedy of 9/11 brought Comfort Zone to the Northeast. Mitch and Jamie were instrumental in helping Lynne partner with Montclair Kimberley Academy to host day camps for the many local grieving families. Since then, Comfort Zone Camp has continued to grow and offer camps across the U.S. In 2022, Comfort Zone held 26 camps helping 1037 kids and 120 parents from 32 different states. Mitch started his journey with Comfort Zone as a volunteer and instantly connected with the mission, fellow volunteers, and the sense of fulfillment from knowing he made a difference for a grieving child. Mitch serves as Chair of the National Board for Comfort Zone and is instrumental in raising awareness for the mission. Mitch explained that grieving children often feel a profound sense of isolation because their friends don’t know what to say or how to relate to them. Comfort Zone creates a “bubble” where for the first time, campers are surrounded by a robust and supportive network of peers that personally understand their loss. They learn age-appropriate coping skills that

The Decter family (left-right): Ryan, Mitch, Morgan, Jackson, and Jamie will help them manage their grief in their day-to-day lives. In addition to participating in the healing circles where the campers share stories, Mitch says it is a regular camp offering a wide range of activities. Volunteers serve as “Big Buddies” to support the campers throughout the weekend. Mitch says that the family tries to participate as often as possible. His oldest child, 18, volunteers at the camp as a Junior Counselor, and his two sons, ages 11 and 15, volunteer as helping hands checking on people throughout the weekend. “One of the most incredible things is to be there for a child in their time of need and to help them navigate their grief journey. It is amazing how much progress we see in the kids in just two days. To be a little part of their life and to help put a smile on their faces is a remarkable thing to be part of,” says Mitch.

Salsa Under the Stars

ance the night away with the spirited sounds of salsa, merengue and more from David Cedeño and His Orchestra. Together with his orchestra, David plays a large variety of music such as Latin salsa, Latin jazz, meringue, ballads, and waltzes. Still believing that music was “made to be shared”, David rearranged some popular English hits by adding a Latin salsa beat while still keeping the original lyrics in English. These English titles include Lady in Red, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Somewhere, & Sealed with a Kiss. His initiative opened the gate for other Latin performers to attempt a crossover and introduce their music to America.

Take in a Shakespeare Play

A

nd A Nightingale Sang…, by C.P. Taylor and Directed by Bonnie J. Monte, will be playing at the Shakespeare Theater of NJ this summer. This endearing play about a middle-class family in England during the Blitz of WWII is, at turns, hilarious, romantic, moving, and inspiring; a celebration of life in the midst of destruction, with fortitude, music, and humor as the protagonists’ main weapons against despair. The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey (STNJ), originally called the “New Jersey Shakespeare Festival,” is one of the leading Shakespeare theaters in the nation, serving approximately 75,000 adults and children annually. It is New Jersey’s only professional theater company dedicated solely to Shakespeare’s canon and other classic masterworks. Through its productions and education programs, the company strives to illuminate the universal and lasting relevance of the classics for contemporary audiences.

14th Annual FREE Movie Night Under the Stars SPONSORED BY MONTCLAIR FILM INSTITUTE Venues open at 7pm and the film will begin at sundown. Come early, bring a lawn chair, a picnic, and enjoy the show.

2022 Smash Hit: Top Gun: Maverick

1985 Classic: The Goonies

2021’s: Encanto

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Adapted by Chris Columbus from a story by Steven Spielberg, THE GOONIES follows a group of misfit kids (including such second-generation Hollywoodites as Josh Brolin and Sean Astin) as they search for buried treasure in a subterranean cavern. Here they cross the path of lady criminal Mama Fratelli and her outlaw brood. Fortunately, the kids manage to befriend Fratelli’s hideously deformed but soft-hearted son, who comes to their rescue. The Spielberg influence is most pronounced in the film’s prologue and epilogue, when the viewer is advised that the film’s real villains are a group of “Evil Land Developers.”

The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift — every child except Mirabel. However, she soon may be the Madrigals last hope when she discovers that the magic surrounding the Encanto is now in danger.

Choosing Colors for a Remote Office

W

hen it comes to choosing colors for a remote office, it’s essential to create a productive and inspiring environment. Opting for colors that promote focus, creativity, and calmness can enhance your work experience. Consider incorporating the following colors into your remote office: Known for its calming and serene effect, blue promotes concentration and productivity, making it an ideal choice for office spaces. Green symbolizes nature and fosters a sense of tranquility, harmony, and balance. It can help reduce eye strain and create a refreshing atmosphere. Neutral tones in shades like white, beige, or light gray provide a clean and minimalistic backdrop, allowing you to focus on your work without distractions. While the above colors are generally beneficial, there are a few colors you might want to avoid. While red is known to stimulate energy and passion, it can be overwhelming in large amounts, potentially leading to distractions and increased stress levels. Vibrant hues like neon yellow, orange, or hot pink might be visually distracting and disrupt your concentration. Remember, personal preferences and the nature of your work should also influenceFREE your color choices. Embracing Nature Within:

The Essence of Biophilic Interior Design

I

n a fast-paced and technology-driven world, a longing for nature often finds solace in our hearts. Enter biophilic interior design, a concept that seeks to bridge the gap between modern living and our innate connection with the natural world. Biophilic design focuses on incorporating elements of nature into our interior spaces, creating environments that nourish and inspire. Think lush green walls, cascading water features, and ample natural light flooding through large windows. The use of organic materials like wood, stone, and living plants further enhances the aesthetic appeal and brings a sense of tranquility and harmony. Studies have shown that biophilic design can improve overall well-being, productivity, and creativity. By embracing biophilic elements, we foster a deeper connection with the environment, reduce stress, and enhance our mental and physical health. In a world where urban landscapes dominate, biophilic interior design provides a welcome respite—a gentle reminder that our roots are firmly grounded in nature.

Corcoran Sawyer Smith Brings High-Quality Brokerage Service to the Suburbs continued from the previous page

“High quality service for buyers and sellers in the luxury real estate market is what Corcoran is known for,” says Drago, “and our emphasis is the client service relationship. For instance, we provide unparalleled experience to urban buyers seeking to move into the suburbs and through our affiliate reach, buyers from around the world can see our properties.” For buyers and sellers, that customer service centers on providing clients with a thorough education that will translate to a successful transaction. And it’s based on the company’s traditional values that place service, integrity, market expertise, and neighborhood fluency at the heart of the company’s service mission.

“When a client comes to buy, we provide them with a thorough knowledge of the home, area, they are looking into that takes into account all the variables—i.e. schools, commuter transportation options, information and a drive through of the downtown area,” Drago says. Services are designed to provide information that will allow them to get the full picture of what it would be like to live in the area they are interested in, along with the home they are interested in. For sellers, many of whom are uncertain of the value of their home, the company helps them to establish the value and provides an education on how to sell a home, from staging and presentation through to sale. “We are known for the high quality of our marketing materials and that is fully employed to help make the selling experience a rewarding experience.” Drago adds, “Corcoran, in fact, has long been recognized as the leader in marketing for doing things outside the box and ahead of the curve. Our marketing campaigns are fun, creative, and innovative while remaining effective and socially conscious.” Corcoran can offer deep knowledge into the communities it serves and part of that is due to its involvement in those communities. “We have committed to having a positive impact on the communities we

DAN FENELON

When The Art is Just Plain Fun! Story and portrait by Dan Epstein

W

e’ve gotta wonder if when he was growing up in Montclair, people imagined the flights of fantasy that Dan Fenelon would take them on. Educated at both the Art Students League in New York, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, his Art career at first took a somewhat traditional corporate approach. He worked in the graphic design department of a large Pharmaceutical company, as an illustrator for a sports marketing concern, and then as an illustrator for Toys Are Us. It was in 2010, answering a call for mural artists from Arts Unbound, that the volcano of magic erupted. Barbara Reuther from Morris Arts engaged Fenelon to do murals in schools, which led to Laura Urbanelli, the executive director of the Montclair Museum, to commission a large mural displayed for two years that put him prominently on the regional Art scene radar. Now, dividing his time between mural commissions, Art-centric corporate team-building projects in partnership with his wife Kadie Dempsey through their company Core Creative Placemaking, and exhibiting his work in galleries, his work is very visible and delighting viewers. Bird In Hand, a 56x80 acrylic on canvas painting, which started as a doodle in his sketchbook, is currently on display in an exhibit in Gallery 491 in Montclair. Taking much of the symbolism from mythology, Fenelon likes to think of it as having a subconscious narrative, though, with no concrete story. In it, his illustration background comes into play, and the viewer’s eye can’t help following a path around the painting. Fenelon loves to create three dimensional works, and here, an unusually large one, Supercat was constructed with the aid of sculptor Bob Richardson. A seven and a half foot tall piece made of construction material and acrylic paint, which echos Superman, and offers what Fenelon refers to as “Catitude”. It’s both imposing, and friendly. Fenelon likes when viewers are moved to touch it while experiencing the sculpture. Dan Fenelon 42

In a mural on the Luna Stage building in West Orange, Luna Moon, we are engaged in a tribute with many references. The open arms welcome the viewer to the community, which is sometimes called “Hat City” since it was formerly the home to the largest aggregation of hat-making factories in the US. The theatrical imagery, as well as the moon, of course reference the Luna Stage, housed in the building, and uses a color palette Fenelon believes is uplifting to the urban community. We are amused by how he has incorporated the lighting fixtures on the wall into the mural in the flowers. More of Fenelon’s work can be seen at Gallery 491, until July 28, from 7am-7pm. Likewise at the FSA Gallery in Frenchtown, the last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August where many small works and prints will be available, and of course online. Prepare to be delighted.

The Path to Natural Recovery from Injuries & Pain TOTAL RECOVERY PHYSICAL THERAPY By Christine S. Maxwell Photos by Dan Epstein

A

t Total Recovery Physical Therapy in Little Falls, Dr. Jack Zuckerman PT, DPT, owner, and his multispecialty team of physical therapists, acupuncturists, occupational therapists, and chiropractors work together to ensure the maximum recovery of their patients from injuries and pain. Dr. Zuckerman states, “we approach our treatments using the new model of physical therapy, which is commonly used by “physiotherapists” in European countries.” The new model incorporates manual therapy which heavily relies on hands-on techniques. Some of the manual therapy techniques have been adapted from osteopathic doctors. These hands on treatments are used to manipulate soft tissues to get the muscles, joints, and tendons moving. When ligaments and nerves are moving frequently with poor movement patterns or poor posture, these areas can become “stuck.” Manual therapy loosens and lubricates these areas to get them moving again. Using the new physical therapy treatment model, the

practitioners pride themselves on up to 90 percent of full recovery in their patients’ condition without unnecessary medications, injections, or surgeries. In New Jersey, physical therapists have direct access to patients. With “direct access,” physical therapists can see patients without doctor referrals. Dr. Zuckerman goes on to explain that physical therapists receive the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree through continuous study and training throughout their professional career. They can diagnose and write an individual “plan of care” for each patient. “Our focus is to get the patient back to full functional capacity as quickly and efficiently as possible,” says Dr. Zuckerman. The physical therapists develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient depending on their unique needs. Dr. Zuckerman states “at the crux of the treatment is specific corrective exercises, neuromuscular education or muscle memory to connect the body to the brain so that patients can move the way it was intended to move prior to the poor habits it developed over time.” In addition to muscle memory, the PTs introduce functional exercise that enables patients to integrate specific exercises to movements into daily life, recreation, and sport. In combination with the new treatment model, the practitioners utilize cutting edge treatment modalities to accelerate the healing process. Deep tissue laser therapy and radial pressure wave (shockwave) therapy promote healing by restarting and then expediting the body’s natural healing methods. Dr. Zuckerman summarizes their mission: “We want to be the number one multi-specialty clinic that provides people a way of getting better naturally, effectively and efficiently.”

While perhaps an obvious step to some, one of the most direct ways you can protect skin is by applying sunscreen— most experts recommend 30 SPF or higher—before heading outdoors and reapplying every 1-2 hours. If you plan to spend extended time in the sun, opt for a lightweight, long-sleeve shirt and pants for maximum skin coverage.

DENTAL CARE REDEFINED

Begin by finding a quiet and comfortable space where you can unwind and disconnect from external distractions. This could be a cozy corner of your home or a secluded spot in nature. Ensure that the environment is peaceful and conducive to relaxation. Choose a posture that allows you to be both relaxed and alert. You can sit cross-legged on a cushion or in a chair with your feet planted firmly on the ground. Keep your spine upright but not rigid, allowing energy to flow freely throughout your body. Close your eyes gently and take a few deep breaths. Inhale slowly through your nose, feeling the air fill your lungs, and exhale through your mouth, releasing any tension. These initial breaths signal to your body that it’s time to unwind and enter a state of calm. Direct your attention to your breath, observing its natural rhythm. Notice the sensations as you inhale and exhale—the rise and fall of your abdomen, the coolness of the air entering your nostrils. As thoughts arise, acknowledge them without judgment and gently guide your focus back to your breath.

TruYou Dental is redefining dental care by improving the smiles and lives of our patients. We continuously pursue excellence using a high quality, team approach to create an exceptional patient experience. COSMETIC DENTISTRY • FAMILY DENTISTRY DENTAL IMPLANTS • FACIAL ESTHETICS • LASER DENTISTRY

Meditation is not about emptying the mind but rather cultivating a mindful presence. Embrace the present moment, allowing thoughts, emotions, and sensations to come and go without clinging to them. View them as passing clouds in the sky of your consciousness, acknowledging their presence but not attaching significance to them. When beginning your meditation practice, start with short sessions of 5-10 minutes. As you become more comfortable, gradually increase the duration. Consistency is key, so aim to practice daily, even if it’s for a few minutes.. Embrace the journey, knowing that each moment spent in meditation contributes to your overall well-being.

Diamond Minds

Nature’s Way By Barry Farber

L

eonardo da Vinci once said, “Nature is the source of all true knowledge.” Have you ever got burnt out from your work or couldn’t get back into the groove where you are operating on all cylinders? Over the years, we all go through changes in our environment, sometimes leaving us feeling unmotivated or struggling to find the creative juices to take action and move the needle. Anytime I need energy or a fresh way to look at things, I turn my focus back to nature and have never been disappointed. I want to share three ideas that help me get rejuvenated and back on track:

1. BREATHING AND MEDITATION.

There is a saying that “still waters run deep.” When the water is still, all the silt settles to the bottom, and you can see clearly. This is like how the mind works. When one sits still to rest or meditate, one’s mind becomes clear, and new visions and direction can settle. It helps you clarify what is important and the best actions for moving forward. ‘Still waters run deep’ represents the tremendous power one can gain from quieting the mind and sitting still in a mild meditation. Try this, even if it’s just a 10 min break from work once during the day. First, find a quiet place to rest—a quiet room or outside where you’re away from noise. Then sit or stand with a comfortable posture. Someone once told me to sit like a general on horseback, maintaining the best posture. This will allow you to breathe naturally and get centered. Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds and exhale through your mouth for 5 seconds or more. Do this and concentrate on breathing in and out; eventually, there will be no thought. Your goal will be to attain what the Japanese call “Mushin,” which means no mind. After a while, fresh ideas and new understandings flood your brain. My most valuable ideas and insights on what I should be doing with my business were generated during these mini-meditations during the day. These breaks will bring you back fresh with a renewed spirit and new approaches to your work and life.

2. GETTING CLOSE TO THE EARTH.

Many times, I will go out in the yard and walk around or stand in one place barefoot. I never knew why it made me relax and feel more energy until I started researching the subject. I found out it was called “Grounding.” “When walking barefoot, our body absorbs free ions from the Earth’s surface, which act as antioxidants. These antioxidants enhance our health and lead to positive feelings in the body. Grounding offers many health benefits, including improved sleep, reduced inflammation, improved tissue and cell repair, enhanced blood flow, increased

Barry Farber 58

heart rate variability, and improved electrical activity in the brain. In addition, walking barefoot on the ground releases endorphins. This can improve our mood and counteract mental illnesses like depression and anxiety. Walking barefoot also reconnects us with nature, which boosts our mental and physical states in other ways. As such, Earth’s natural healing energy should never be overlooked!” (Global Viewpoint, Feb. 16, 2023)

3. WALK IN THE WOODS.

Since I was nine months old, I spent my summers at a camp in the Pocono Mountains. My mom and dad worked at the camp, and I was lucky enough to be surrounded by so much natural beauty. Back then, I would hike for hours deep in the woods. Today I still love that walk in the woods. When you’re on a path in the forest where it’s quiet you start to forget about the daily pressures, and you begin to clear your mind and feel whole. If you want to learn about the vast benefits of this exercise, google “benefits of walking in the woods.” While we breathe in the fresh air, we breathe in phytoncides, airborne chemicals that plants give off to protect themselves from insects. Phytoncides have antibacterial and antifungal qualities, which help plants fight disease. When people breathe in these chemicals, our bodies respond by increasing the number and activity of a type of white blood cell called natural killer cells or NK. These cells kill tumor- and virus-infected cells in our bodies. One study showed increased NK activity from a 3-day, 2-night forest bathing trip that lasted more than 30 days. Japanese researchers are exploring whether forest exposure can help prevent certain kinds of cancer. (Immerse yourself in a forest for better health/Department of Environmental Conservation)

“I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees”. —-Henry David Thoreau
