Caldwell Resident Writes Humorous Book on Dating After 70
F
ollowing a loving 46 year marriage, Maxine Raskin, 81, of Caldwell, has published a book called “Who Says It’s Too Soon, My First Year Without Him.” In the book, she writes about what she learned and how she managed after her loss. She describes her book as secret dating diaries including a second section called, “Who Says It’s Too Late, The On Going Years,” which offers a humorous recount of her dating adventures and tips. Now in her 80’s, Maxine also tells stories of how she became a cougar when meeting her boyfriend, Ace, ten years younger. She writes, “It’s not too late to add new pages to your life and have fun doing it.” Now she is producing a reality show she created meant to entertain, encourage and inspire people, particularly women, to get out there and live life with companionship at whatever their comfort level. For further information, contact Maxine at maxinelur@hotmail.com. The book can be purchased on Amazon. Photo by Dan Epstein

Caldwell 6th Grader Wins Spot as a Time for Kids Reporter
C
aldwell’s Lucy Sandor, 11, a sixth grader at Grover Cleveland Middle School has won a coveted spot as a Time for Kids Reporter for Time Inc.’s magazine for children. Out of 350 entrants, Lucy was one of 10 regional winners who won a spot after writing two articles as entries. She caught the attention of Time’s judges with an article on Boardroom Skate, a skateboarding club for girls and non-binary people at Rand Park Skatepark in Montclair, where she skates. Her mom Theresa Hunt thinks the fact that skateboarding was added to the Olympics is what helped Lucy’s article get noticed. The second article was about Montclair High School students who are part of Letters for Rose, a charity that helps teenagers deliver letters to senior citizens in nursing homes to help reduce their loneliness during the pandemic. Over the year, Lucy will be writing on topics that interest her and will write book reviews. She is also being sent on assignment to cover Comic Con and will be sent to cover other events too. In addition, she will participate on the Time for Kids podcast. She says she is “very excited and happy because this is a big opportunity” for her. Aside from writing, Lucy also enjoys reading, running on the Cross-Country team at her school, and acting.

VETERAN HELPS VETERANS Get Back on Their Feet
By Jackie Schatell
W
hen United States Marine Corps. Veteran, Brett D’Alessandro, who grew up in Verona came home from a seven-month deployment in Afghanistan, he had some trouble reintegrating into civilian life, while battling the hidden wounds of war. As he began to check out the resources available to him, he realized they were hard to find, but they were there. He was not alone. Following a face-to-face encounter with a homeless veteran on the streets of Rhode Island in the winter, Brett realized it wasn’t just him or those he was deployed with that were struggling, it was MANY veterans, nationwide, who had to deal with the trauma of coming home and not knowing where to turn. This was an “aha” moment for Brett, who took it as a sign to “do more and be more for his fellow servicemen and women.” That day, Brett distributed a backpack to this veteran filled with toiletries and warming layers. From this simple act – Backpacks For Life was born. Now, seven years later, Backpacks For Life, which Brett runs with his fiancée, Alexa Modero, has helped countless veterans get back on their feet. “For Veterans who have nothing, a backpack is their most crucial asset. It is their mobile home and, in some cases, it is even a container for their only belongings,” says Brett. Each backpack is filled with toiletries, supplies, and resources pertaining to supportive services. “Our goal is to enhance the general well-being of our homeless veterans while providing
Pictured left-right: Alexa Modero, Kara DeSmet and Brett D'Alessandro them with tools to succeed,” he says. “Backpack distribution is our gateway to reaching out to a veteran, establishing trust, and getting them started on a path off the streets, out of poverty, and towards self-sufficiency,” he adds. “The delivery of the backpacks is as important as the backpacks themselves,” says Brett. “It is not about quantity; it is about quality.” The goal is to provide something of worth in a way that makes the veteran feel worthy too. Aside from creating a specialized backpack packed with tons of necessities, Brett also created ROGER, a comprehensive user-friendly search platform “without all the noise” for all of the resources available to veterans in NJ, with plans to expand coverage. All of these services are delivered free of charge and many of the items packed in the backpacks come through donations. While he could ask large companies to donate, and sometimes he does, Brett says he prefers that smaller groups hold collections themselves to spread the word about Veteran issues. “We want to share the message that there is a need to help veterans and feel that is best done via these types of collections,” he says.

West Orange Sophomores Collect Items for the Afghanistan Refugees in NJ By Jackie Schatell
R
ecently, four sophomores at West Orange High School in West Orange: Brooke Schenk, Liam Brosnan, Dylan Schatell, and Tanner Joroff ran a drive to collect items for the Afghanistan refugees who landed in NJ after the US pulled out of Afghanistan and the Taliban took over, causing many refugees to flee the country. When I heard the refugees were coming to NJ, I immediately wanted to help them,” said Schatell. “Most of them have escaped deportable conditions and have nothing.” Agreeing, Joroff said, “It feels great to know that all our efforts will positively impact the Afghan refugees.” The collection boxes were located at all of the West Orange Public Schools and at the West Orange Public Library. Scott J. Cascone, Superintendent, West Orange Public Schools who along with the building principals helped tremendously with supporting and promoting the drive and delivering and collecting the donation boxes said, “I am very proud of this young lady and these gentlemen. This initiative that they have taken on exemplifies not only the character of our community and of course the character of these young folks, as they are precisely the type of individuals and student citizens that as a school system we are working to try and foster and graduate from our schools.” The items collected included new socks, new hygiene items, gently used or new shoes/sneakers and bed linens. They will be donated to the International Rescue Committee (IRC), which will distribute them to the refugees.

“We collected so much and are so grateful to the West Orange community,” says Liam Brosnan. Brooke Schenk added “It was overwhelming to see the donations we collected and I felt fulfilled thinking of the people that would be receiving the donations”
the genuine delight that a clean pair of socks or a new toothbrush can bring to a person in need is both heartbreaking and heartwarming.”
Sally Simonfay, Basic Needs Coordinator, IRC, is thrilled to be accepting the donations. She said, “It’s fantastic to know that there are such wonderful communities of students who are supporting our refugee population and helping homeless men, women and children. Hygiene products, clean socks, toiletries and shoes protect and help to ensure the health of these incredibly vulnerable families. More importantly,
When asked how she felt about her daughter Brooke’s involvement, Julie Schenk said, “It’s wonderful to see these kids so tuned in to what’s going on in the world today and find a way they can contribute to their community locally. It was great, but not surprising to see the West Orange community be so generous.” Liam’s mom, Tracey Brosnan said, “I am so proud of my son and his friends. They give me hope that there will be a better future. We need more kindness in this world and they are laying the groundwork.”

It’s an idea that rejects the status quo, “whatever” in favor of “what if?” What if we build a health center in the poorest and most notorious shantytown in the country? Fifteen years later, Cité Soleil residents are happy with the answer.” Enjoy an evening of cocktails, dinner, live entertainment including Haitian-born vocalist, Jocelyne Dorisme, and hear from guest speakers, Lamp for Haiti Medical Director, Dr. Barrere Hyppolite, and Dr. Morgan. ust as a Broadway show needs its backstage crew as well as its actors in order to put on a rousing performance, a hair salon needs its front desk and administrators as well as its stylists in order to deliver top-notch hair care. In the case of Shag86 salon in Little Falls, the “stage manager” is Sarah Ferraro. As Director of Operations, Ferraro has any number of specific responsibilities. Her overall responsibility is simple, though: “To make sure that clients leave our salon having had nothing less than an extraordinary experience.” Ferraro has held this position for two years; prior to this, she worked in customer service/customer relations for almost two decades. She understands that pleasing the client is at the heart of Shag86 operations: “With so much stress and uncertainty in the world, I want our clients to have a happy, relaxing experience here.” That experience begins at the front desk. Ferraro spends a lot of time there and says, “Salon Coordinators Monica Dybus and Katie Raniero are true professionals; it is a pleasure to work with them.” She also praises the entire team of stylists: “This is a team of energetic, passionate people who truly love their careers.” Supporting the stylists is another important part of Ferraro’s job: “I make sure that the salon is fully stocked at all times, so that the stylists have all the tools and products that they need to do their best work.” Sarah Ferraro
Creating a Happy Environment at Shag86 November 2021
Ferraro is always available to speak with a client or team member about any concerns they may have. She notes that “Running and organizing daily operations can be challenging at times, but seeing a client have a ‘wow’ experience makes my job so rewarding.”

veryone wants to look their best, especially for the holidays. At GLAZE Salon partners Cindi Galiher and Kathy Korab aim to do just that. They have created a warm, welcoming space where a highly skilled stylist will shape the most becoming cut for each clients’ individual face.“Ninety percent of our stylists have more than 20 years of experience,” states Galiher. “When a new client calls or stops by, it is often due to a referral from a satisfied customer,” said Korab. “Desk staff who are well versed in each stylist’s skills, will refer the new client to a stylist that is the perfect fit,” she adds. “New clients always say they cannot believe how beautiful the salon is,” said Galiher, noting that GLAZE provides the same attention to detail and professional services as high-end New York salons. Salon & Beyond (continued from previous page)
GLAZE prides itself on making sure its stylists have access to classes on the latest in cutting techniques, as well as information sessions on new products and how to use them. Galiher notes, “Fall and holiday trends include blue, green, purple and other color highlights—“mermaid-look” hair—as well as the ever-popular ombre fashion.” Korab adds, “We can do anything for anyone.” In its 2,500-square-foot space, GLAZE houses separate sections for color and blowouts and also has nail, eyebrow and lash, as well as waxing services available. The on premise espresso bar offers wine and seltzer for clients. In addition, there is an entire retail section allowing clients to shop for hair products they love, as well as a curated selection of tasteful gift ideas.
Jenifer Waltz and Cindi Galiher
A point of pride for the GLAZE partners is that they carry top-quality product lines that are not available in many places. “We use only the products that we sell, “ states Galiher. Among these are the luxury haircare lines ENJOY, Oribe, and Iles Formula. The salon also carries the Olaplex system that is designed to repair, protect and strengthen hair, as well as a full line of ancillary products for Brazilian blowouts—a GLAZE specialty.
In the salon’s retail section, customers will find many items, including Lafco and Antica Farmacista candles and oil diffusers, “Little Words Project” inspirational bracelets, Peepers reading glasses, CBD-based skincare products and gummies—and Galiher’s own line of jewelry. GLAZE will be holding a “Sip & Shop” holiday event on Sunday, November 14 from 11am-3pm. Galiher and Korab invite new and regular clients to drop in and experience everything the salon has to offer.
For many, a side effect of the COVID-19 infection has been hair loss. GLAZE offers both the Viviscal Pro dietary supplement system, clinically proven to enhance and restore hair growth, as well as the évolis system, that also has proven results. Galiher personally uses and recommends serum-based Aethern, to “transform” skin, hair and nails.

ust as rock was revolutionary, the School of Rock methods for teaching rock are pretty revolutionary, too. Their instruction is both song and performance based. Students have two different types of lessons each week, a one-on-one lesson with an instructor and a group lesson where they rehearse with other students. Students work toward putting together two live shows per term. Each week they learn technique MONTCLAIR, NJ and basic theory from their teachers all within the framework of learning a classic rock song. Students also have access to a proprietary Method App™ which contains tutorials, exercises, background tracks to help them practice and more than 1,000 songs. In their groups they learn how to work together, why they need to practice in order to perform and how to communicate within their band. It all comes together on stage. One of their students summed it up, “I like the fact that no matter what level of musician you are, the School of Rock encourages you to put forth your best effort, making students feel comfortable where they are in their journey. I believe this inspires the will to learn more and become a better musician, which is why I go there.”

The strength that sets MBS apart is how successfully we focus on engagement—energizing students to immerse themselves actively and deeply in the experience of learning. MBS students aren’t simply covering more content, doing more homework, and taking more tests; they are striving to understand important material more deeply and to take on meaningful challenges. MBS is also exceptional in the attention we pay to each individual and the breadth of opportunity we provide to each. With an emphasis on balance, every student is encouraged to take risks, push into challenging new territory, and explore all their talents.
y moving our thinking from difference as a deficit to one of capacity-building with classroom environment changes to support learning, we enhance educational experiences and leverage strengths for deeper learning and meaning-making. The Craig School balances our students’ education by providing ample instructional time for addressing their greatest needs while also supporting the development of strengths, all the while recognizing that our students are fully human, ever-evolving, and full of ability. At The Craig School we cultivate and support our students’ positive identities as learners. We partner with parents to build student capacity through targeted, personalized learning experiences which remove barriers to learning. Finally, we design the broader curriculum for greater educational access and participation from each student. While the challenges of learning differences are real, we remove limitations by providing the supports and services uniquely designed for the learning needs of the individual student, we build upon their strengths and capabilities, and we lay the foundation to thrive in learning and in life.

here is a proposal that has support from Governor Murphy, Senate President Sweeney, and Assembly Speaker Coughlin to help New Jersey families who are saving and paying for college, as well as for those who are paying off their student loans. Currently, there are 34 states that have offered a tax benefit for contributions to an approved 529 college savings plan. This deduction is included in the proposed 2022 State Budget as part of a plan to make college more affordable.
Michael H. Karu, CPA/CFF
529
The proposal would allow for a deduction of up to $10,000 per year for contributions to the NJ Better Education Trust or NJBEST, but would be limited to those households with taxable income of $200,000 or less. 529 plans are effective savings vehicles as the contributions grow tax free and, upon withdrawal, assuming the funds are used to pay qualified education expenses, are not taxable.

s a young boy, Dr. Kurt Jackson, a vitreo-retinal surgeon, pictured himself seeing patients in his own office and caring for them like family. “That’s what really drove me to open my own practice,” he says. “So many things in medicine are moving to volume care, and people are becoming numbers. I want my patients to have an alternative to that and know they have my complete attention.” At Jackson Eye Care, Dr. Jackson helps manage and care for issues such as macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal detachment, retinal tears and complications of hypertension in the eyes. His courteous and accommodating office staff also makes patients feel cared for and special. His wife, Kai, is the office administrator.

Hair Loss & ReGrowth
Article contributed by Dr Nervi & Dr Rocca, Dermatologists, Natural Image Skin Center Photo by Dan Epstein
D
id you know that over 50% of women will experience hair loss by age 65? In fact, it is one of the most common conditions we treat in our practice & one of the most distressing to our patients. Alopecia, for both men and women, can have debilitating psychological effects. Many of our patients have desperately tried just about anything suggested to them to regrow their hair; often without benefit & at considerable financial expense. This can lead to feelings of increased anxiety & despondency. However, there is hope! Hair loss is generally divided into two groups- scarring & non-scarring. Nonscarring hair loss is most common & can be reversed in many cases. Along with a thorough history and physical, a dermatologist may order blood work or even perform a scalp biopsy to evaluate an underlying medical cause for the hair loss such as hormone imbalances or vitamin & nutrient deficiencies.
There are many treatments for hair loss. In our practice, we often prescribe a combination of therapies including supplements, anti-hormonal agents & topical minoxidil. Platelet rich plasma injections, or “PRP”, is a rapidly growing therapy, used for hair loss. PRP utilizes concentrated platelets derived from your own blood. These platelets contain growth factors that facilitate wound healing and tissue rejuvenation. A small sample of your blood is drawn in the office & processed with a centrifuge to yield PRP- rich with your own platelets & growth factors, which stimulate the stem cells inside the hair follicles. This process transforms your inactive hair follicles into an active growth phase. A series of these injections are typically recommended for an optimal outcome. Our patients prefer the injections because it is a more “natural” therapy with very few side effects & is tolerated extremely well. We like to maximize the therapy by adding supplements such as
Nutrafol or Viviscal & adding HydraFacial Keravive scalp treatments which cleanses & nourishes the scalp. Ultimately, treatment depends on the root cause of the hair loss. Seek help by scheduling an evaluation with one of our Providers & take the first step toward correcting the problem by successfully re-growing hair.

Heal Your Heels! The Right Treatment Can Bring Much Needed Relief By Sue Baldani, photo by Dan Epstein
H
eel pain can be frustrating and make performing everyday activities difficult. To find out what’s causing the pain, a trip to a professional is the best plan of action.
“Typically, the cause would be plantar fasciitis or sometimes a heel spur,” says Dr. Matthew Wachtler, podiatrist and owner of Cedar Grove Foot & Ankle. “Plantar fasciitis is an issue with the ligament (fascia) that connects the heel to the ball of the foot. When it gets irritated, it becomes less flexible and more painful, especially with the first couple of steps in the morning or after you sit for a while.” Plantar fasciitis is often caused by overuse, unsupportive shoes, and/or going barefoot for long periods of time. Left untreated, it can go on to cause heel spurs, which is a bony-like growth under the heel bone. Dr. Wachtler will formulate a comprehensive treatment plan to resolve these issues. “Treatment includes stretching exercises at home and possibly physical therapy, and maybe a cortisone
shot,” he says. “We can also design an orthotic to be worn inside the shoe to relieve the pressure on the ligament or spur, and we’ll also address the overuse component and other issues that caused them.”

an a beautiful smile last forever? RoseAnn Giannella, DMD, PA, believes so. Working with patients from ages 3 through adult, since 2001, Dr. Giannella has maintained a dental practice in Essex County. Dr. Giannella and her staff of dental assistants and hygienists perform the appropriate procedures to preserve nature’s lovely smile through cavity fillings, regular checkups and cleanings, and preventative measures to keep teeth healthy. Cosmetic dentistry is also a way to keep a beautiful smile. Dr. Giannella’s expertise includes porcelain, veneers, crowns, bridges, and dental implants as a cosmetic dentist. Dental implants, the most advanced dental procedure for permanent teeth, may be an option. Dr. Giannella concurs, “The benefit of cosmetic dentistry is to correct any discolorations and to get a better smile. Implants or hybrid dentures replace missing teeth with a permanent solution, just like natural teeth.” With the advances in cosmetic dentistry, a captivating smile may be possible at any age.

Dr. Amanda Aster-McKenna Helps Patients Move Forward By Janis Hashe, photo by Dan Epstein
D
r. Amanda Aster-McKenna, Psy.D follows the principles of Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) in her own life. “The goal is to be able to continue living a fulfilling life, even if difficult thoughts and feelings are present,” she said. ACT, she explained, can be said to stand for “Accept, Commit, Take Action.” Dr. Aster-McKenna works with many patients dealing with depression, anxiety, grief and other emotional and behavioral issues, which have become even more prevalent during the pandemic. She finds ACT helps people “learn to get better at feeling,” enabling them to move forward in their lives.
For example, someone might say to themselves, “I’ll ask that someone out when I don’t have anxiety.” But, she said, people can learn to accept a certain amount of anxiety and still take action. She first conducts a free, 15-minute phone or video consultation with a potential client. Then, the client can chose to commit to a 60-minute session which explores their situation, and determines if therapist and client are a good fit. A poem by Dawna Markova on her website helps express her focus. It begins: I will not die an unlived life/ I will not live in fear.

n recognition of a $100 million donation from the Cooperman Family Foundation, which is the largest monetary contribution ever provided to a hospital in New Jersey in support of its healthcare initiatives, Saint Barnabas Medical Center (SBMC) in Livingston has announced that the hospital will be renamed the Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) in honor of donors Leon and Toby Cooperman. Leon and Toby, longtime Short Hills residents, have an extensive history of philanthropy throughout Essex County and have previously donated more than 100 times to the medical center, including a $25 million gift in 2014 that provided the catalyst for a vast expansion of the hospital. In 2017, they became the largest benefactors of a $200 million state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit dubbed the Cooperman Family Pavilion in recognition of the couple’s contribution to the five-story, 241,000-square-foot facility. “I am at the point in my life where I want my gifts to have real impact, and I could think of no better way to do that than to make this investment in healthcare in the community that has given so much to our family,” Leon said. “The pandemic has shown us that heroes are working in our hospitals every day, and I’m honored to help support their work.”

nder the direction of Dr. Kelly DiStefano, Montclair Rejuvenation Center has grown into one of the largest and most innovative full-service Medspa’s in Essex County. Their Verona office offers state-ofthe-art aesthetic and wellness services at reasonable prices. Each patient’s course of treatment begins with an in-depth consultation. A plan is put together to help their patients look more youthful without surgery. The practice specializes in non-invasive treatments like Botox®, dermal fillers, and PDO thread lifts. These work to enhance facial features. To help rejuvenate the skin and stimulate hair growth, the team at Montclair Rejuvenation Center offers innovative platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments. Other skin enhancement options include microneedling, chemical peels, CO2 Fraxel treatments, hydra facials, PRP treatments and many other options. Dealing with Conflicts
W
e all deal with conflicts in some form or another at work, in our relationships, and during our daily interactions with others. These conflicts will always be present for those in leadership positions or anyone striving for high achievement.
“The real and most dangerous opponents we face are fear, anger, confusion, doubt, and despair. If we overcome those enemies that attack us from within, we can attain a true victory over any attack from without.” —Morihei Ueshiba Here are several ways to deal with conflicts while reducing the stress that comes with them:
1
Avoid anger and greed and replace them with concentration and awareness. To have a grounded, focused and calm demeanor in the face of difficulty is admired and extremely effective. The next time you find yourself in any type of conflict, listen to what the other person is saying. Ask about his or her position in order to better understand it. Sometimes there can simply be a communication problem that can be dissolved by letting the other person talk. When we let anger and greed become our emotions, the conflict increases with both our opponent and ourselves.
2
Breathe. In every martial art, discipline breathing is one of the most critical factors for control and power. Yet it is one of the last things we think of when confronted with conflict. Breathing calms you, brings oxygen to your blood and heart, improves mental observation and concentration, and ultimately reduces stress.
Try this breathing method recommended by Sensei Greg O’Connor: “Breath in through your nose and let it settle in your belly by doing deep abdominal breathing or diaphragmatic Barry Farber breathing—allowing the diaphragm to move up and down for fuller capacity breathing. Once you let your breath settle to your lower belly relax your shoulders then allow your lower belly to expand and “breathe like a baby.”
3
Put the situation in perspective. When you really look at the reason behind the argument, is it worth it? How many times have you said to yourself, “I can’t believe what we used to argue about.” Look at the bigger picture and realize it can be better to forget it and move on. I find great satisfaction when researching and interviewing people who have faced extreme adversity because it helps to put my own life in perspective. No matter what you’re going through ask yourself if this conflict is worth pursuing or better to be put to rest.
4
Become comfortable in your own skin. Having confidence in who you are will help you to deal with people without getting defensive. Sometimes we spend too much time with people who actually enjoy creating conflicts and thrive on negativity. Learn to separate real conflicts from negative attitudes and people who want to bring you down. Some of the greatest decisions are not just picking the right mentors to surround yourself with, but also moving away from the people who don’t provide any value. Famous World War II admiral, William “Bull” Halsey, said, “Touch a thistle timidly, and it pricks you; grasp it boldly, and its spines crumble. All problems become smaller if you don’t dodge them but confront them.”
