Over his past six years in office, Mayor Pelloat has accomplished a great many things, including rebuilding the boat launch and adding the shelters down Lake Road, re-purposing the ballfield into a town park by adding a walking path and gazebo—with the hopes of also incorporating a splash pad and new playground equipment—as well as updating and improving the Employee Handbook and Emergency Operation Manual; obtaining ownership of the Madisonville Cemetery and a complete overhaul of the fence, entrance, gravesites and adding a sidewalk in front; and replacing all town signage to historical fixtures. “We have also received more grants for infrastructure and beautification in the six years I have been here in office than in the 20 years prior,” Mayor Pelloat asserts.
Growth is also at the top of his priority list, but not at the expense of everything that makes Madisonville so distinctly Madisonville. “My goals while in office are to keep moving Madisonville forward by improving infrastructure and beautifying our community,” he says. “I have a great desire to help this town grow, while still preserving and protecting the charm and character that make it so special.”
That desire and dedication has been patently obvious to his constituents—and, of course, some of the very reasons they elected him to office. “I believe I was elected because people can see my love for this town,” Mayor Pelloat notes.
As much as he has enjoyed his life in the political sphere, it has admittedly had some challenging points. “My political career really has been wonderful,” says Mayor Pelloat, who ran on the Independent ticket. “It started off a little rocky, but everything has a lesson in it, and I think it enabled me to better serve the town and its people. I never was really interested in politics per say, but I have always wanted to make a difference in my community, regardless of the job title.”

When Jean Pelloat was elected to the office of mayor in Madisonville six years ago, he held the distinction of being the first new mayor the town had seen in 40 years—and his re-election four years later subsequently proved that everyone knew he was the right man for the job.
B orn and raised in Madisonville, Mayor Pelloat is clearly a man who loves his town, having also raised his own family here. Prior to becoming mayor, he spent 43 years working in the insurance industry, and 28 of those years were also spent serving on the Town Council. “Becoming mayor was a natural progression from there, as I have always wanted to preserve and protect my hometown,” says Mayor Pelloat.

As much as he has achieved during his two terms, Mayor Pelloat still finds his greatest reward in the people he serves. “My greatest pride as mayor has been the overwhelming support I have received from the citizens of Madisonville as well as my peers all the way from my first election to now,” he Evensays.with such an outpouring of support and continued backing from the people of Madisonville, there have naturally been challenges that have arisen and tested the mettle of this particular mayor. The fact that he so deftly guided the town through some very unforeseeable dark days only proved that he was more than capable of being a great leader. “Between COVID, Hurricane Ida and now the price increases and supply shortages, I believe the Town Council and our town government have been constant sources of support for our citizens and other municipalities,” he says. “We never closed our offices during COVID, so we were open to accept payments and put our citizens at ease. After the hurricane, we immediately got to work picking up debris and helping the town return to its pre-hurricane state. We are suffering like everyone else with the shortages and price hikes, but we are working very hard to keep prices down for our people and keep up with the demand for utilities from the large amount of growth in our area.” In his down time, Mayor Pelloat’s hobbies include working in his yard, golfing and watching his grandchildren play sports. “I have a great desire to help this town grow, while still preserving and protecting the charm and character that make it so special.”

Both professional models and You Night ladies strutted their stuff at the You Night Battle of the Models on Saturday night at the Castine Center in Mandeville. The tickets that were sold for admission benefitted the We Lift You Up fund. This is a public charity organization where funds are dedicated to emotional health programs for women diagnosed with cancer. The tickets also supported You Night’s year-round programs for women in New Orleans and St. Tammany who are looking for sisterhood of support after a cancer diagnosis. How would you describe yourself or the restaurant?

What is one ingredient you can't live without and why? Garlic. Garlic makes the world go round. What is your favorite meal to prepare at home? Mostly comfort foods I grew up eating - lots of pasta, greens such as broccoli rabe, escarole and beans, eggplant parmesan the way my mother prepares it. Steak, steak and occasionally a steak. What do you love most about the local restaurant industry? Louisiana's food culture is incredibly rich and unique to anywhere else in the world. As a chef working here, I am obligated to help preserve that culture.

My favorite dish is carbonara pasta or just some pasta sautéed in brown butter and topped with shaved parmesan. Pasta is simplistic and delicious.
What do you love most about the restaurant industry?
What is one ingredient that you can’t live without and why? One thing you can’t live without would be salt and pepper. This is the essential of all ingredients and can make anything stand out, cure or preserve.
I would describe myself as an easy, fun loving & devoted chef that cares about the quality and consistency of products that we work with. I have been in the industry for over 25 years in all aspects of the restaurant industry from hotels, golf courses, casual service to fine dining. Our restaurant is the premier steak and seafood restaurant on the Northshore providing the freshest of seafood and highest end of steaks. From dayboat fish to Japanese A5 beef and caviar, we provide the best we can source. Located overlooking the Tchefuncte River, we have everything for the perfect getaway from the day to day.
What was your first restaurant gig? My first restaurant gig was in May 1995 in Wesley Chapel, FL at John Christians Brew Masters Steakhouse. This was a bar and grill where I started as a dishwasher and within six months I was introduce to the line and was so excited and since then I have still have the same energy and intensity today.

Portions of the building were designed by famous Louisiana modern architect John Desmond as a medical clinic more than fifty years ago. The mid-century modern space was ideal to convert to an upscale restaurant, and we took great care during renovations to keep some of the original elements intact. More research showed us that the original building--which was a gas station--had been added on to by John Desmond to create the mid-century modern classic that it is now, and the architects preserved those elements that were designed and added by John Desmond, which included painted exposed structural steel; cypress wood soffits and ceilings; custombuilt steel frame windows; and beautiful translucent Carrara marble, which was glazed into the window system. All of these elements were maintained and restored.

With a courtyard that features a waterfall as well as massive gates salvaged from an ancient English castle dating back to the 1700s and in addition to a heated spa, the home is set back on the property for just enough privacy to give it the true sense of sanctuary. At approximately 7,000 square feet, the massive two-story home comprises three bedrooms and three and a half baths as well as massive living spaces whose look and feel work in perfect harmony with the exterior. Faux finished walls, travertine tile flooring, interior columns, soaring ceilings with inset detailing, and polished woodwork make each space cohesive to the next, given a warmth created by the natural tones and textures used in each room.

“I’ve always had a passion for teaching and learning,” shares Kathy. “After teaching special education in Orleans Parish, I was the director of two separate schools for children with learning disabilities in New Orleans and then became an educational consultant for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. This position gave me insight into many eclectic types of schools and leadership styles which became an invaluable springboard for my work at Cedarwood School.”
No matter where you find Kathy, just know she is always putting her best foot forward to make the Northshore a better place. She currently serves on the St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce board of directors and is a member of the American Heart Association’s Northshore Circle of Red. Through the Cedarwood Children’s Foundation Kathy helped establish the Director’s Network which provides specialized training for preschool directors and teachers on the Northshore. Along with many other community organizations, Kathy also served as a board member of the Children’s Advocacy Center and as a Role Model for the Youth Leadership Council of Greater New Orleans.

While the role of school president is helping grow the children of St. Tammany Parish, Kathy’s most valuable role is that of a wife, mother, and grandmother. “I’ve been married to my husband, Maxie for 46 years. We have four adult children, Max, Lauren, Leigh-Ann, and Michael. Our four grandchildren are the joy of my heart,” says Kathy. “It is such a joy to be able to have the ones who reside here attend Cedarwood”

Building the foundation of the school was much more than a brick-andmortar project back in August 1983. Kathy’s vision was first and foremost
to create a learning center that was diverse in nature. While focusing on the importance of the curriculum, Cedarwood incorporates music, art, technology, physical education, literacy enrichment and foreign language.

While the term “childhood sweethearts” may not be fully accurate as a descriptor for Courtney Butters and Sam Ybos, the two have known one another since the first grade, when they both attended Our Lady of Lourdes in Slidell. Schoolmates until Hurricane Katrina separated them in their third-grade year, they reconnected when they got a little older and stayed in touch sporadically until college in 2016, when they began dating.

Over the next four years, Courtney and Sam strengthened the bond that was obviously always there. Then, on February 20, 2020, Sam made that bond a permanent one. “I was in dental hygiene school, and he was working offshore at the time,” recalls Courtney, who works as a Registered Dental Hygienist, while Sam works down the Mississippi River as a maritime captain. “I was coming home from school to my grandparents, where I lived at the time (they live on Lake Ramsey in Covington), and found a candle-lit pathway leading me to Sam. He was standing on the dock with roses.”
Naturally, Courtney said yes to the proposal that followed. On November 6, 2021, she said yes again, standing with Sam at the altar in St. Peter Catholic Church in Covington. Wearing a simple, classic high-neck haltertop gown, the couple exchanged vows and were pronounced married as their family, friends, and 12 attendants gathered with them in celebration.
Having dined and danced—and played—the happy couple cut into their cake: a three-tiered confection simply decorated with a figurine of their dog, Ramsey, on the side, made to look as though he got into the cake. Still, there was more fun to be had with the bouquet and garter toss— which also had a twist. “We also threw ‘Ybos Fan Club’ t-shirts that had me, Sam, and our Ramsey on them,” Courtney says with a laugh.

After being sent off with wishes for a future filled with happiness, Sam and Courtney began their honeymoon at the Beloved Resort in Playa Mujeres, Mexico. “Sam was only home for a week, so it was a whirlwind,” Courtney says. “He came home Wednesday evening, set up for the rehearsal dinner on Thursday, then went to the wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner Friday. We had the wedding on Saturday, the honeymoon from Sunday to Thursday, and then Sam went back to work Friday! Needless to say, we had a short, but wonderful honeymoon. It was actually very relaxing!” Following the ceremony, the newlyweds joined their guests for a reception at The Greystone in Mandeville, where they dined on a Louisianainspired buffet style dinner and passed hors d’oeuvres. As memorable as the food was, there were a few unforgettable moments in the reception. “My dad always likes to put on a show,” says Courtney. “He picked me up and twirled me around during our dance, which was not planned. He then got on stage and started singing. Sam’s uncle Raymond also hopped up on stage with our band (Category 6) and started playing the guitar. He’s actually in a band himself, so he knew what he was doing.”

Established as a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to the educational, social, and spiritual development of Honduran women, Mi Esperanza is based in Louisiana and depends on funding that originates in the U.S. “People who have a heart for women, children and community support us throughout the year,” says Hines. “We have a very focused vision for our future. We launched a $3.5 million campaign, ‘Women of My Hope,’ to SCHMIDT

Three years later, the two women established Mi Esperanza in December of 2002 to serve the women of Honduras, working with the express mission of educating them and giving them the tools they needed to provide for their families. “After returning several times, we both felt a great need to help,” says Hines. “With education and skills training, these women would be able to create businesses and gain employment to support their families as they broke the generational cycle of poverty. Our mission is to elevate women and change the world. Mi Esperanza means ‘My Hope’ and brings hope to all women, both young and old, to provide educational and financial tools that enable them to change their lives and the future of their children.”
Over the lifetime of the organization, Mi Esperanza has brought hope to more than 1,500 women; and ten years ago, they began producing textiles and jewelry made by their graduates, whom they hired and trained. Their online store has great quality products that support their programs. Pre-COVID, 100 women were educated each year—though that number has currently decreased because of governmental restrictions. “Like many organizations, COVID shut down all activity at our training center in Honduras,” says Hines. “However, by June of 2021, the government granted us privilege to reopen with a small number of students and provided the policies regulating the educational community. Our board and supporters made a commitment to continue paying our employees through COVID. We paid them for fifteen months. This also covered their healthcare and provided much needed help with their families. During this time, we held virtual fundraising and cultivation events, and became even more adaptable. As a byproduct, the women and our supporters saw Mi Esperanza persevere and stay committed to its mission. Now, we are hoping for restrictions to be lifted so that our number of students can return to pre-COVID levels.”
T here’s a saying that behind every good man, there’s a good woman. But really, it goes deeper than that. Studies have shown that, in educating and giving women a means of livelihood, families are given the chance to break out of the cycle of poverty and entire communities are lifted out of hopelessness. For Janet Hines and Lori Connell, the critical role that women play in their communities was never driven home so much as it was on a mission trip to Honduras during which they met in the summer of 1999. It was then that they saw an incredible depth of poverty that moved them to action—and then that the seed of an idea was planted in their hearts.

“One of our best fundraising events, ‘Passport to Hope,’ originated here in Covington four years ago,” Hines continues. “The last two years, it has been virtual; but this year, it will be in-person at the Southern Hotel on September 15. It's a great event with excellent silent auction items and delicious, Honduran-themed food. The program details our current work, showing our classrooms, the communities our women live in, and their personal stories. It's an evening that will leave you inspired by their determination and the hope that Mi Esperanza provides.”
And it does, indeed, provide hope. “Our greatest accomplishments are found in the stories of the women we serve,” says Hines. “We have graduated women over the past 20 years and seen generational change as women send their children to private schools, college, and university. They are raising nurses, lawyers, and students with many degrees. Each of their stories tells of our successes and propels us to do the work we do. When we see the generational effects of our work, we know we are fulfilling our ‘Educate, Empower, Elevate and Employ’ model, not just for the women we serve, but for generations to come.”

M uch like the sisters Brontë, Charlotte Haynie and Emily Roy have an extremely close relationship—so much so, in fact, that the pair live right next door to one another and co-own their very own business together. Working under the moniker Raney Co., Haynie and Roy work from their kitchen tables, creating “Read and Play Kits” for children of all ages, which include a children’s book, story and character props to act it out, and a Play Smarter Activity Card which serves as a guide to the caregivers or parents. Designed to promote early literacy skills, boost language development and increase imagination, the kits are both fun and educational—and a great departure from screens.
“While we run the business from our home, initially my biggest challenge was designating ‘work time’ and ‘mom time,’” Roy agrees. “In the beginning, I found myself making little mistakes here and there, whether it was with ordering or returning items, setting up our online shop or designing new kits. I quickly realized that when the kids are awake, there needs to be a time

With so much going on, there are, of course challenges. “When I look back at my career before I had kids and compare it to now, my life is completely different,” Haynie admits. “It is hard having work responsibilities and also having to be responsible for another person's life. I am a planner but having two jobs and kids requires way more planning than I ever imaged. I feel like I am constantly thinking ahead and planning everything, from our day-to-day schedules and meal planning to making time for myself. I am really blessed to have a very supportive husband who is amazingly helpful. We both put in equal work when it comes to kid duties and house duties. If it wasn't for him, I think I would be way more stressed and exhausted!”

As much work as their home-based business is, the sisters still each have another very important job: being moms. A full-time mom to three-year-old twins named Garner and Winnie, Roy also works as a Pre-K teacher. Haynie, meanwhile, has a two-year old son named Baird and a seven-month-old daughter named Merritt in addition to working as a sales account manager for a consumer goods company.
Likewise, Haynie is dedicated to creating the best memories for—and with—her children. “I want my kids to remember how much fun we had,” she says. “I want them to remember the silly songs we made up to help them learn and grow and how the entire family would sing them around the house. And I hope in the end, all of that reminds them of how much I loved them. When my son was a year old, he was waking up really early in the morning. After weeks of this, we hired a sleep consultant who had us start a bedtime routine. At first, we thought it was kind of silly, but it is now a tradition we do every night and have started it with our daughter. We read a book, say our prayers, walk around the room and say good night to random items in the room (that was the silly part), sing ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star’ and then when I lay him in his bed, I tell him one thing I loved that he did that day.” Their dedication to their children is obvious, and so is their talent for bringing children's books to life for kids everywhere.

I’m solely focusing on them. Since then, I’ve developed a little schedule for myself and mainly work around their nap time and after bedtime, when all is finally quiet.”
Regardless of whether it’s “mom time” or “work time,” Roy makes sure to show her little ones just how much they are loved—all the time. “I truly cherish each and every day with them,” she says. “I hope they remember the little things that made our days ‘ours,’ like helping me cook in the kitchen, playing hide and seek, making grocery store runs. I hope they look back on their time with me and feel nothing but love. We strive to make even the most mundane of activities fun and memorable. My husband and I also make it a priority to eat dinner as a family every night. While we eat, we all take turns describing our day. I ask Garner and Winnie to tell us about their day: something that made them laugh, something that made them frustrated, or something that made them proud. It’s a special way to peek into their little world, and I always look forward to their answers.”

Graduates 53rd Class [HAMMOND, LA.] — The 53rd graduating class of the North Oaks School of Radiologic Technology celebrated their accomplishments with a commencement ceremony on Wednesday, July 6. Program Director Heather Koepp proudly shares that the class of 2022 has a 100% job placement rate with six of the fourteen graduates accepting positions with North Oaks Health System.
Kelly LaRocca Honored as Library Director of the Year at State Conference [COVINGTON, LA] - Kelly LaRocca, Director of St. Tammany Parish Library was awarded Library Director of the Year — a statewide honor — at the recent 2022 Louisiana Library Association (LLA) conference held in early July. The purpose of the award is to recognize the outstanding contribution of a current Library Director in Louisiana. Kelly LaRocca has worked for the St. Tammany Parish Library for seventeen years. She was named Interim Director in 2018, and selected Director in 2019 after a nationwide search. She has served as reference librarian, branch manager, and assistant director.

Now the newest member of the North Oaks Surgical Associates team of employed providers, Dr. Linarello shares that he is looking forward to helping to enhance the already advanced surgical services offered by the health system.
Commencement was held at the E. Brent Dufreche Conference Center. North Oaks Pastoral Care Director Keith Kincaid delivered the invocation, and Lisa Raney and Cynthia Thornbury of the Auxiliary of Gideons International presented each graduate with a Bible for medical professionals.
A fellow of the American College of Surgeons who is certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Linarello is no stranger to North Oaks Health System and the Northshore community. As a member of the North Oaks medical staff for the past 20 years, he has cared for area patients as a physician in private practice.
The CAC designation gives local families confidence that they will receive the best care in our pediatric emergency room. Cindy Ingram RN, St. Tammany Health System assistant vice president of women’s and children’s care, said. “Through this process, we have learned how to interact with our autistic patients from the time we enter their care space. Everything we do and how we do it shows that patient that we can be trusted and are there to help. This is vitally important for autistic patients because they experience interpersonal interactions differently, and we are grateful to IBCCES for instilling these skills in our team.”

Dr. McCall McDaniel, MD is an orthopedic surgery specialist in Covington, LA. Dr. McDaniel completed a residency at Tulane Department of Orthopedics.
