COMMUNITY Leader

AS A PHYSICIAN, TIM RIDDELL KNOWS THE WAY THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM WORKS—OR, AS THE CASE MAY BE, DOESN’T—AND THAT MAKES HIM THE PERFECT PERSON TO FILL THE CHAIR BEHIND THE DESK OF THE NORTHSHORE REGIONAL MEDICAL DIRECTOR AT OCHSNER MEDICAL CENTER.

FROM DOCTOR

TO DIRECTOR By Liesel Schmidt

S

ince taking the position in 2020, Riddell has been working to enhance the unique relationships that Ochsner has created with partners including St. Tammany Health System in Covington, Slidell Memorial Hospital in Slidell, and Singing River Health System on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Those connections have proven important to the way that Ochsner serves the Northshore community—service that, for Riddell, is the very reason he became a doctor. “I first realized that I wanted to go into medicine in junior high, when I was a student at Slidell Junior High. During career day, I heard that neurosurgeons made $1,000,000 a year; and, having realized that my rock star dreams were slipping away because I couldn’t play the guitar and that my athletic career wasn’t going where I thought it would go, I focused on the idea of being a doctor,” Riddell says with a laugh. “Of course, as I matured, I recognized the fact that the job is so much more than money. I started to realize that I had a skill of understanding and helping people with problems that they faced. We talk a lot about empathy and the ability to put yourself in someone’s shoes while they’re suffering, but we also have a deep-seated need to fix things that is paramount. You can’t fix everyone’s disease, but you can fix the way that they are experiencing that disease; and that has driven my desire to be a doctor. It can sound a little bit contrived at times, but I believe that this profession is very noble and allows us to really help people at the worst of times.”

Unfortunately, the worst of times has befallen us in a big way—and that has been one of Riddell’s major focuses over the course of his time as medical director. “Really, the biggest thing has been the impact of COVID-19 on our employees and our patients,” he says. “Three months after I started this role, we were hit with the pandemic. The number of things that have changed as a result of COVID could fill a book, from implementing testing programs to developing new ways of taking care of patients within the hospital and providing services for 14

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

people not just in this region but across Louisiana. Those were huge changes that our teams were able to take on, and we were able to build one of the most successful vaccine programs in the region, if not the most successful vaccine program in the state.” A primary care physician, Riddell’s career has deep ties to Ochsner, first at the original Ochsner clinic in Mandeville and then at the Covington clinic. During that time, he progressed through various leadership roles within Ochsner before taking the role as regional medical director on the Northshore. He also sits as a member of the Ochsner Health Board of Directors. “My positions of leadership have involved local roles such as the lead of our primary care practice and associated medical director, which has me over the clinical activities of several different departments,” Riddell explains. “From the overall system level, I’ve served on our professional activities committee and on our medical affairs committee, which handles many of the clinical decisions made by Ochsner.” For Riddell, taking on the role as regional medical director was an easy decision. “The position really gives me an opportunity to do two things: First, it allows me to help make sure that we’re providing the quality care and experience that the Ochsner name has become known for across the region and, really, across the nation,” he says. “Secondly, it allows me to make sure that the physicians who are providing that care are doing so in a way that really values their effort and their expertise.” As someone who has lived his entire life on the Northshore, Riddell has deep ties to the community and feels a personal investment in its well-being. That’s something that he brings to the job—and Ochsner shares that commitment to community. “We are proud to treat our patients, but we want even more for them to be healthy,” he says. “We want to support your ability to participate in healthy events that impact all parts of our life, so for us to have a presence there through sponsorship is very important. It’s one of the reasons we recently got together with STHS and other health systems across the region to form Healthier Northshore, which is a platform for us to promote healthy lifestyles and healthy behaviors for everyone across the Northshore.”

THE

MUSIC

MAKERS Regardless of how old you are or where you grew up, chances are that music has played a big role in your life. It transcends time and connects people across the world, speaking words that—while deeply personal for the one who wrote them—seem to reach into your soul and touch something in you in a way that nothing else can.

t was for the songwriters yet to be discovered that Greg Barnhill, Buzz Jackson, and Michael Blache first created the annual Songwriter Festival on the Northshore. Back in 2017, the three songwriters had aspiring dreams to highlight songwriting—and they knew that there were others who needed to be given the chance to shine. Starting with in-depth planning for staging, parking, and the recruiting of songwriters, the festival’s founders were soon joined by Christine Barnhill and Mary Grace Knapp as the group named and created the foundation for the festival. By November 2017, the Ozone Music Education Foundation received its 501c3 status as a nonprofit. The first Ozone Songwriters Festival took place in October of the following year; and by the second festival in 2019, more than 130 songwriters from 14 different states were

featured. Over 1,200 attendees supported the event, proving that the Northshore is giving Nashville a run for its money. While the festival is of great import, it is the foundation that is really making a difference. Created with the purpose of providing music education, support, and mentorship to those wanting to learn the music industry and develop skills and knowledge as songwriters and musicians, the Ozone Music Education Foundation has worked with hundreds of performers. Buzz Jackson, who received an award from the Louisiana Folklife Museum in 2019; Joe Sims, who was the 2020 Ozone Songwriter Contest Winner and labeled as "One to Watch" by the Nashville Songwriters Association International; and Hannah Belle, whose song, “Raised,” was 26th of the top 100

country songs in 2020, among many others. “The spectrum of talent runs from young, beginning songwriters and the American Idol winner Laine Hardy to Platinum Album-selling Anna Nalìck and Grammy Award-winning Gary Baker. We aim to give support and a platform to artists of all ages and demographics,” says Greg Barnhill, a songwriter, recording artist and music producer who has worked with a number of up-and-coming artists and notably won an Emmy, a song of the year award, and multiple Grammy nominations. He also won top awards for the advertising version of the Grammys. “We want music education to be available to individuals of all ages who want to pursue music to their fullest ability and desire, and we want songwriters and performing artists to have collaboration and networking opportunities to support their music development,” he goes on. “We are also working towards helping St. Tammany Parish become a thriving music community for local, regional, and national musicians, with the hopes of providing a commercially attractive hub for recording artists to create, produce, and showcase recorded music, including content for film, TV, and broadcast advertising. We want St. Tammany Parish to be a desired music destination for locals, visitors and tourists to hear and enjoy music.” From its inception, the goal of Ozone Music Education Foundation was to be an organization that gave back “We are helping fill a void with music education to the community. Proceeds from all events go to the for kids and adults alike, exposing them to music Ozone Music Gifting (OMG!) program, which provides musical instruments and lessons to children between education as well as the inner workings of the the ages of 10 to 18 residing in St. Tammany Parish. music industry.” “We are helping fill a void with music education for kids and adults alike, exposing them to music education as well as the inner workings of the music industry,” says Barnhill. “We believe that communities that have a cultural anchor are more cohesive JUNE/JULY 2021

and better places to live. We aim to create that anchor through songwriting and performing. We also envision our music events to be a bridge and cultural music exchange with songwriters from other cities and states. All in all, many aspects of the community are positively affected. Education, the arts, and economic development are all benefitted by our organization.” Over the past four years, the impact that Ozone has made in the community has been significant. Free instruments and training are provided for children in the community who otherwise could not afford it, and their annual festival and sound-off events have stimulated the economy and brought in musicians from across the country to perform. In addition, aspiring songwriters and musicians are given opportunities to learn the music business from professional and successful experts. The foundation holds seminars on everything from recording and recording equipment to how to use social media and increase your numbers, to how to play an instrument. Thankfully, the organization is back on track with events after the pandemic, with the Ozone Songwriters Festival slated for the first weekend of November. Smaller events and performances will also be held at other venues throughout the St. Tammany area. Funding for the organization comes from contributions from board members, community and private donors, and grants from the Parish as well as proceeds from ticket sales from the Songwriters Festival, Sound Off, and Symposium, entry fees for the songwriting contest, and merchandise and concession sales.

GENTLEMEN’S HEALTH

MOHS SURGERY

The Most Effective Technique for Treating Common Skin Cancers Mohs surgery is a precise surgical technique used to treat skin cancer. During Mohs surgery, thin layers of cancer-containing skin are progressively removed and examined until only cancer-free tissue remains. The goal of Mohs surgery is to remove as much of the skin cancer as possible, while doing minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Mohs surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis using a local anesthetic. Mohs surgery allows surgeons to verify that all cancer cells have been removed at the time of surgery. This increases the chance of a cure and reduces the need for additional treatments or additional surgery. Dr. Jeffrey Lackey joined Tulane Dermatology in July 2020 and is certified by the American Board of Dermatology. His area of expertise is in Mohs micrographic surgery, reconstruction, and multidisciplinary management of complex cutaneous malignancies. He completed his Mohs Micrographic Surgery Fellowship at Mystic Valley Dermatology, Stoneham, MA and is a fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery.

Dr. Lackey treats patients of all ages. For more information or to make an appointment, call 985-893-1291.

HUNTING EXCELLENCE By Liesel Schmidt

“EXCELLENCE ISN’T ALWAYS EASY, BUT IT’S ALWAYS EXCELLENT.” Those are words that P.J. Demarie III lives by in all that he does, whether at work or at play. It keeps him focused and dedicated; and really, it’s a principal that he feels is the secret to his success. “Anything that you’re going to do, do it excellently,” says Demarie. “That’s something that my father instilled in me, and it’s what makes some people more successful than others.” The owner of a New York Life agency for the past 34 years, Demarie has risen to notoriety as one of the top 200 agents in the company for selling over $1 billion dollars over the course of his career. But as much pride as he takes in his work, it is the hunt—the literal hunt—that is his greatest passion. A duck hunter since the age of six, Demarie showed promise even as a child, when the nickname his grandfather gave him was “Quank” for the fact that he was never without his duck call. As he got older, he honed his skills and then one day saw what is considered the holy grail of the duck hunting community: the North American Grand Slam. “During the ’70s, I walked into a taxidermist’s office and saw that he had every North American waterfowl mounted on his walls,” Demarie recalls. “I thought it was incredible, and I wanted to try to do it. 44 years later, my wife and I have completed the North American Grand Slam.” Wielding a Berretta A400 semi-automatic 12-gauge shotgun, Demarie has traversed most of the U.S. with his wife at his side in pursuit of his

30

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

quarry and achieved the Grand Slam to amass a collection of ducks and geese, both hens and drakes, that includes all North American species as well as most of the species of South America. Boasting 93 birds in his office, Demarie has certainly fulfilled his vision of achieving excellence in duck hunting—so much so that he has risen through the ranks of Ducks Unlimited to first become chapter chairman and then state chairman. Though the opportunity to move up as a national officer was considered, Demarie shifted his focus to growing his family. Having bagged the Grand Slam, Demarie began a quest for excellence in another pursuit: a perfect 100 out of 100 in sporting clays. “You walk around a course like a golf course, and each station you go to has a different presentation of targets,” explains Demarie, who uses a Perazzi over-and-under 12-gauge shotgun for the sport. “Once I finished the Grand Slam, I wanted to shoot a perfect 100 out of 100 in sporting clays. It only took me 30,000 targets to get there, but I accomplished it!” Again, it is a pursuit of excellence that drove him; and that excellence has brought him great success in the hybridized daylilies that bring droves of people to gaze at their beauty in his front yard as well as the succession of Labrador Retrievers that he has trained as hunting dogs. As his tagline on Facebook says, “YOU can make a difference every day;” and in doing what he does, Demarie tries to live in a way that inspires others to dream big, reach for their dreams, and achieve much.

The Calmare® device uses a biophysical rather than a biochemical approach. A ‘no-pain’ message is transmitted to the nerve via disposable surface electrodes applied to the skin in the region of the patient’s pain. The perception of pain is cancelled when the no-pain message replaces that of pain, by using the same pathway through the surface electrodes in a non-invasive way.

GENTLEMEN’S HEALTH

SPINE HEALTH EDITORIAL BY DR. SEBASTIAN F. KOGA, NEUROSURGEON

S

ummer is a time of year when Louisianians are outdoors playing sports, boating, swimming, taking up new hobbies, and in better times even traveling to cooler climates. At the doctor’s office the summer season sees a drop in patient visits, but many spine injuries actually take place during this time. Neck and back pain are very common, and almost everyone will experience these at some point in their lives. The majority of back pain is not dangerous, and does not indicate a permanent problem. Yet spine surgery is increasingly common, and many patients have unsatisfactory outcomes and continue to suffer chronic pain. WHAT CAUSES BACK PAIN? The spine is a complex part of the human skeleton with 24 mobile vertebrae holding us upright and protecting the spinal cord or nerves. The vertebrae are linked by discs and by facet joints located above and below each level thus allowing for bending and for cushioning of impacts. The vertebrae, the discs, the muscles, and the spinal nerves can all generate pain. They are considered connective tissue, and consist of collagen. Like the collagen in the rest of the body, they are susceptible to natural aging and decay, and therefore having an abnormal MRI is very common with age and physical activity. The spine is subjected to mechanical stress during all activities, and besides accidental trauma I find that carrying extra weight is a major culprit of back pain. Often patients say “I was big all my life and this pain is new”, but the truth is that obesity takes a gradual toll on the spine, and is often associated with weak core muscle. The discs get compressed, the spine may even curve and shorten, the posture changes and chronic pain soon leads to doctor visits.

DOES SPINE PAIN INDICATE SOMETHING DANGEROUS? Spine pain is very common and usually not dangerous. When the pain is limited to the central area of the neck or lower back it is likely to subside on its own. The paraspinal muscles and ligaments often cause pain which improves with rest, and with overthe-counter medications. Neck pain can also generate headaches which do not require a visit to the doctor. The pain which get doctors worried is shooting pain radiating into the arms or legs. This indicates that nerve roots are being compressed, and over time could be permanently damaged. I often describe to patients the spinal cord as a dense clump of telephone wires transmitting millions of relays to the brain. These signals control all the pain, sensation, and movement in the body. So while pain is the first sign, most surgical problems are accompanied by loss of sensation (numbness, tingling) and sometimes loss of movement (ankle weakness, unsteady gait). Neurons do not recover well after damage, so it is important to identify problems early before any nerve damage has occurred. WHICH TYPE OF DOCTOR SHOULD I SEE? Spine problems are so broad that many doctors offer treatments. It is sensible to start with physical therapy and primary care, but most patients end up seeing a spine specialist such as an orthopedic surgeon or a neurosurgeon. With minor differences both specialities offer the same range of treatments, with an everincreasing number of new devices and procedures.

or years, it may be time to address the origin rather than just mask the pain. I encourage all patients with spine issues that persist beyond a year to see a spine specialist with training in orthopedics or neurosurgery. MY NEIGHBOR HAD A TERRIBLE OUTCOME WITH SPINE SURGERY The majority of stories about ‘spine surgery gone bad,’ has to do with expectations and understanding of the goals. I make all my patients fill out a detailed questionnaire which measures their level of disability in daily life. I operate when their disability rating is over 25% and never promise them that they will be pain free, but that their quality of life will improve. We always say that “the purpose of spine surgery is to protect the spinal cord and the nerves from further damage.” If we achieve that the surgery is a success. Sometimes more is achievable, the nerves recover, feeling and strength return to a weak limb, and the pain subsides. But when patients expect a miraculous solution to all back pain, surgery does not hold the answer. LAST WORDS Keep a healthy weight and keep your body fat percentage low. Walk 10,000 steps per day, stretch before exercising, and focus on strong core and paraspinal muscles. Do not use narcotics for back pain. Seek a spine specialist if you have numbness and weakness in the limbs.

COREY

MAJORS SUPERDAD BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

W

hile Corey Majors might admit to not having felt at all prepared for kids when he and his wife started having them, fatherhood has actually come naturally to him. An endocrinologist at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, Corey has a heavy workload to balance; and even though he is on call every other week, he never misses the opportunity to spend time with his two daughters. “He takes time every day to send the girls voice messages saying, “Have a good day, I love you,” even when he has a full clinic and is doing rounds with patients in the hospital,” says his wife, Erica, who left her nursing job to be a stay-at-home mom. “He will get up early on the weekends to do rounds at the hospital so that he can make it back in time for soccer with

the oldest or go to t-ball in the morning, then go home to change and get to the hospital. He doesn’t have to do that, but he wants to make those memories with his girls.” With a three year-old and a one year-old at home, Corey could easily be of the mindset that they’re too young to notice his absence or that he can be there when they’re older. But he’s made them a priority now, realizing that they need him even at this early age—and, having fallen in love with them, he realizes how much he needs his girls. “Probably the coolest thing about being there for so much is having the opportunity to watch how they change as they learn and seeing how different they are from each other,” he says. “Being a father has

taught me a lot about patience, and I would say that’s also something that’s definitely required in my job.” All of the time he takes to spend with his two girls is, of course, one of the things he hopes they remember about their childhoods. “I hope that one day they’ll be able to look back on things and know that I was there,” he says. “Each day when I get home, my wife brings them outside. It’s a simple thing, but they get a big kick out of running to me when I’m out of the car. I also love to play with them, and I try to dance—which is probably terrible since I’m not a dancer, but they think it’s funny when I jump around with them.” JUNE/JULY 2021

35

SUPERDAD Corey’s self-deprecation of his dance moves aside, his wife thinks it’s the cutest thing ever. “We turn up Kidz Bop radio, and he will run around and dance right along with them,” says Erica. “He knows all the words to ‘Let it go’ from Frozen, and he has been dancing around the house with our oldest since she was a newborn. Here we are, almost four years later, and he’s still doing it now with both girls. He even lets our oldest teach him dance moves she learned in dance class. He’s the perfect definition of ‘Girl Dad.’” Clearly, there’s more to this story than Corey, in his modest manner, will relay. His wife, however, can’t sing his praise high enough. “His girls are his biggest fans,” Erica says. “They are both so proud that their dad is a doctor. Our oldest has been saying since she was two years old that she wants to be an endocrinologist like her daddy, and both girls play with my stethoscope. Corey also reads to them every night. One of their favorites is a tickle monster book, and he wears the tickle monster gloves and tickles them while he’s reading. He does every page twice to get them both. He reads countless princess books every night and never complains. That’s their time every night, after bath time. They lay in the playroom reading books and playing doctor with daddy.” All of the time he spends with his daughters is undeniably making an impression, one that they show outwardly by their mimicry of their daddy. “They imitate everything he does,” Erica explains. “They both have bubble lawn mowers and leaf blowers; and he’ll be outside cutting grass with them right there, ‘cutting grass’ with bubbles going everywhere. I don’t know how he does it, but Corey can get them excited about things that most kids don’t want to do. They go water the garden every day with him and are so proud when they see things growing. He’s teaching, she’s learning, but doesn’t even realize it because he’s made it fun. He finds a way to do that a lot. He’s a fantastic dad.”

GENTLEMEN’S HEALTH

JUNE IS

MEN’S HEALTH MONTH

MEN,

TAKE TIME FOR A TUNE It’s no secret that men need to pay more attention to their health. Much like keeping a vehicle in tip top shape by performing its routine maintenance, staying well depends on getting regular health check-ups and being in tune with your body. Prostate health is particularly important, since prostate cancer is one of the major health risks men face. And, about 1 man in 9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. When caught early, however, it is treatable and potentially curable. So for Men’s Health Month in June, take time to learn about your prostate and how to keep it and your body running efficiently. But first, what is a prostate? It’s a walnutsized gland in men located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It surrounds part of the urethra, which is the tube in the penis that carries urine from the bladder. It produces seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. Pretty important job, don’t you think? It becomes even more important as you get older. As men age, the prostate naturally grows. The most common prostate issue for men over 50 is an enlarged prostate. To stay ahead of these issues, see your urologist for regular check-ups.

QUESTIONS TO ASK DURING YOUR VISIT

 When do I need a prostate exam?  What is an enlarged prostate?  What are the symptoms of an enlarged prostate?  How is an enlarged prostate diagnosed?  How many times a day should I be urinating?  What should I eat for prostate health? Take charge of your health now and see your health care provider. Your prostate will thank you for it. Northshore Urological Associates specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of male and female urinary tract disorders and the male reproductive system.

GENTLEMEN’S HEALTH

MEN AND

COSMETIC

SURGERY

LIPOSUCTION Liposuction is consistently one of the top cosmetic procedures for male patients nationally. Liposuction is not just the removal of fat anymore. It has become a very precise science, creating muscle edges and shadowing, consistent with a fit and athletic physique. Further shaping can be created by injecting fat into the deltoids, pectoralis, and other muscles to improve size and shape without the workout! Liposculpture is about sculpting in every sense of the word. Covid gym closures have caused an increase in both male and female consultations for lipo sculpture this year. Muscle gain, definition, and fat loss get harder to accomplish as we age, especially without a consistent routine. Liposuction can help get you started on your road to looking and feeling more fit.

HORMONE BALANCE Weight gain seen after 40 is often inversely proportional to your testosterone level. As your testosterone decreases, your estrogen increases—and so does your fat. This is not a good combination for men, and it can create multiple problems like fatigue, brain fog, weight gain—particularly in the abdominal area—decreased libido, and poor sexual function. This happens in every man as he ages, and it’s called andropause. I added BioTe pellets to my office services, in order to assure that the root cause was being treated and not just the superficial manifestations. The pellet has a safer profile

and absorption and steadier state than injections or creams and is frankly so much easier to use. All it takes is one blood draw to determine if this treatment is right for you, and I encourage every man over 40 who feels tired and has put on some weight to evaluate their hormones and see what truly ails them!

INJECTIONS Women have realized the value of fillers and are definitely the majority of patients seen on injectable days. But did you know that men can benefit from this, too? Men lose their strong jawline as they age and develop wrinkles and sagging just like women do but in a different way. Filling a man’s face is different than a woman’s, as we are trying to create a more defined, square jawline and subtlety in facial wrinkle filling. A more interesting use of fillers that no one talks about is for penile girth. No man will ever admit that they could use this, and I’m not saying that there is anything wrong with their current package. However as men age, a good "confidence boost", is never a bad thing if you ask their spouse or significant other.

Bro-Tox

WORRY STRESS

BECAUSE THERE'S NO GYM THAT WILL GET RID OF WRINKLES A testament to the fact that cosmetic procedures like Botox® aren’t just for women, Brotox has exploded in popularity over the last decade. As its nickname might suggest, “Brotox” refers to Botox® procedures for men.

Brotox is exactly the same procedure as the Botox® injections that many women also utilize to smooth away fine lines and wrinkles. It’s often referred to as a “lunchtime procedure,” with treatments being generally quick and easy. It can be scheduled during your lunch break, as it requires little to no downtime afterward.

Top 3 Reasons Why More Men Are Getting Brotox

competitive. Studies have shown that there is a direct link between one’s physical appearance and career success. Many men who want to keep a competitive edge take advantage of Botox® procedures to maintain a virile, energized look.

Each year, more men opt for cosmetic procedures like Botox® to help them look and feel their absolute best. While lots of men choose Botox® for reasons similar to women, there seem to be three common threads among men who are considering, or who have already had, injectable treatments.

3 IMPROVE SELF-ESTEEM. On a more personal level, men can benefit from the self-confidence boost that Botox® may be able to provide. When you look your best on the outside, you tend to also feel better about yourself on the inside.

1 MEN AREN’T IMMUNE TO THE AGING PROCESS. Historically, society has emphasized women’s physical appearances, especially as related to the aging process, over men’s. Women aren’t the only ones who wish to reverse the hands of time and look younger and more energized. 2 A NEED TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE IN TODAY’S JOB MARKET. In a similar sense, the job market is constantly shifting and becoming more and more 44

THE HOUSE THAT

BUILT

BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

T

hey say that home is where the heart is; and for Tracy and Troy Duhon, that statement is just the tip of the iceberg. For the couple, home is not only where they live and raise their family—it’s the hub of their charitable organizations and the place where so many people have come to minister to one another and share their testimonies.

JUNE/JULY 2021

53

B

uilt in 2005, the Duhon’s home was ready for them to move in when Katrina hit, displacing them until 2006. “Like many people, we had to rebuild many areas of our home,” says Tracy. “Once it was done, I wanted to make our beautiful home a place of love for our family as well as others. What better way to get to know your neighbors than to open your home and serve them? I began with a Christmas luncheon in December of 2006; and I realized that, when women are brought together, they can do great things.”

54

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

That luncheon was the first of many, and the women who gathered started combining forces to reach out and help the Slidell Crisis Pregnancy Center and battered women’s shelter. Since then, the three-story Mediterranean style home has been filled with love, hope, and faith—though it has come with both challenges and heartaches. The proud mother of four children—Joshua, 24; Abigail, 21; Avah Hope, 10; and Annahstasia Grace, 9—Tracy has also lost three babies, two of which were born without kidneys. It was when the couple adopted Annahstasia Grace from an orphanage in China that Tracy saw the conditions and was given the inspiration for a new project. “Seeing all of these children in the orphanage who needed a family, I began Hope for a Home through our home luncheons, which then became one of the eight pillars of our non-profit, Giving Hope Nola,” says Tracy. “Going forward, each year we have helped as many as four families bring home their children.”

Created in 2013, Giving Hope feeds several thousand people daily through food pantries in New Orleans; Kansas City; and Monterey, California. Giving Hope also builds orphanages around the world, with six built so far in India, Honduras, Russia, Gambia, Brazil, and Dominican Republic. Giving Hope operates a Community Center in the 9th Ward and partners with the New Orleans Mission, which operates the Giving Hope Retreat Center, where individuals facing addiction, sex trafficking, and abuse come for refuge and help. Through Hope for a Home, Giving Hope helps families financially with their adoption process, many of which are international special need adoptions. “To date, we have helped over 25 families with their adoption process,” says Tracy. 2020 did, of course, prove a challenging year, though Tracy and her team of faith warrior women felt a burden laid on their hearts to help 20 children in 2020, with a goal to raise over $20,000 to help children in foster care and with critical illnesses as well as the local Giving Hope Community Center children and GH Hope Home children. Despite the odds, they exceeded their mission. For 2021, the plan is to help 21 children before the end of the year. To date, the organization has helped more than 50 children.

JUNE/JULY 2021

And those women Tracy works with? They became part of Women of Hope Unite, a faith-based woman’s organization associated with the Giving Hope Foundation that invests time, talent, and treasure to impact women and children of all ages, creating a legacy for both present and future generations. “It is about finding the passion that inspires you and the injustice that angers you—that is what you are called to, what creates your legacy,” says Tracy. All of this has happened in the Duhons’ home—a house that they have named the “Duhon Retreat” because it has been host to so many, including visiting pastors as well as future youth ministers and, of course, the young women who help Tracy with homeschooling her kids. “They’re my right hand, and they become like daughters,” says Tracy of her assistants.

With such a busy home, it’s little wonder that the study and family room are some of the favorite rooms in the house—though the massive kitchen is really where so much of the fellowship happens. “We built the island with a cooktop and placed it in the middle of the kitchen, so that your back is never turned on anyone,” Tracy says. “It’s at the center of everything.”

In the common areas of the home, grand vaulted ceilings supported by exposed cedar beams give the house old world charm and distinction that one would expect from the look of the outside, which was styled after the great villas of Italy, with a barrel tile roof and tailored boxwood gardens. The interior also has a French modern feel created by Trudy Hurley of New Orleans.

Frank Palpallatoc BY LIESEL SCHMIDT

As someone who was used to leading an active lifestyle, when Frank Palpallatoc first began experiencing the symptoms of MS, it began to take a heavy toll. It took months before he was actually diagnosed with the degenerative condition—time that seemed to knock the strong, dependable, and loving man off of his feet: he’d lost his job and was, at one point, even living in his car. Throughout it all, however, he showed faith in God and His plan; and now Frank is learning to live with MS without letting it rob him of life. SOCIAL NORTHSHORE: When were you diagnosed with MS? FRANK PALPALLATOC: April 12, 2017 SN: How did you first know that something was wrong? FP: I fell while I was rollerblading, and I couldn’t seem to bounce back from it. It almost felt like I had a stroke, because one whole side of my body felt numb with a tingly sensation. SN: Does MS typically present in men? FP: It’s unusual for men of my age and is actually more typical in young women. SN: How do you manage it? 66

SOCIAL NORTHSHORE

FP: Carefully, slowly, and day-by-day. I receive Ocrevus infusions twice a year to help prevent more lesions from forming. SN: How do you stay positive, even when you’re having hard days? FP: I usually just try not to think about it—with something like this, you just do what you’ve got to do. SN: Are you active in any community organizations? FP: Not really right now, because of COVID; but I used to volunteer and help coach a special needs cheer squad with my ex-wife. She started the special needs cheer squad, and my daughter volunteered to help. Since I have a background in dance, I thought I might have something to offer, as well. I danced at UCLA. SN: How has your family supported you through all of this? FP: They’re always there when I need them. SN: How do you like to spend your free time? FP: I like watching TV, visiting with my grandson, and cruising around town in the car—with someone else driving, of course, since I can no longer drive.

SN: What do you hope your kids/grandchildren always remember about you? FP: I used to be fun and energetic and always happy. I was also a runner and cyclist, and I used to run marathons and participate in triathlons. As the father of two girls who love him immensely, Frank’s diagnosis was naturally a devastating blow to the family—and his daughter, Jennifer, used her social media presence as owner of Haute Off the Rack to raise awareness. SN: Why do you think that people should be more aware of MS? JENNIFER PALPALLATOC: A few reasons. Most importantly, we need to help find a cure. Also, hearing about people living with MS is a great reminder to not to take being able to do simple daily tasks for granted, like walking to the bathroom and putting your dishes in the dishwasher. SN: Why did you share your father’s diagnosis on social media? JP: Sharing the story about my dad helped others feel less alone. I’ve had so many of my Instagram followers reach out to tell me that they’re in the same boat with an autoimmune disease or that they have a parent struggling with a disease or disability. It’s nice when you have someone you can relate to when you’re facing challenges and hardships. SN: What do you think made him such a good dad?

JP: Most people know my dad as Coach Frank, and he is one of the kindest, smartest, caring, most creative and most talented dads I know. He taught me how to walk, talk, dance, run, act, golf, drive, and he even tried to teach me math—but I don’t think anyone can actually help me in that department. When I was little, he coached the jump rope club and track team at my school and taught the dance and drama club after class. He even volunteered to chaperone all of my field trips when I was elementary school and drove me to school every day until I got my own car. My parents divorced while I was in the 8th grade, but he still remained just as involved in my sister’s and my lives as he was before. He even coached a lot of our friends in track, dance, and volleyball; so everyone knew Coach Frank. He lives to coach kids in sports, and I’ve had countless young girls reach out to me about the impact my dad had on their lives while he coached them.

SN: How do you think God has shown Himself in all of this? JP: Before my dad was diagnosed with MS, a woman that my dad had dated for a short time nearly a year prior came out of nowhere to help when she found out that he was living in his car. I’d known that something was wrong, and my heart literally couldn’t take it; so I prayed and said, “I’m putting all of my trust and faith in you. Just please do something to help him.” I believe this is when God sent Candace. To be there for someone who has reached their lowest point in life takes a special kind of person. She opened her home to my dad when he had nothing, and she’s still here today and sticks through it even on the worst of days. I also believe that God sent multiple other people into our lives during this time, like Dr. Devan Szczepanski, who made herself available to us all hours during that crucial time in our lives.

Brennan Whitney FAMILIAR LOVE By Liesel Schmidt

Whitney Ward and Brennan Kent might have known each other since grammar school and played countless games of basketball against each other at their mutual friend’s house, but it wasn’t until adulthood—and, of course, the undeniably powerful force of two mothers conspiring to get their children together—that the two actually began dating.

ver the next seven and a half years, Brennan and Whitney grew closer and realized just how much they loved one another. Then one November night in 2019, Brennan asked the question that had been years in the making. “He told me we were going to dinner to celebrate his brother’s birthday but had to stop somewhere to pick up a check,” says Whitney, who teaches special ed students in 1st and 2nd grade at Carencro Heights Elementary, while Brennan works as an assistant project manager at Kent Construction. “To my surprise, we ended up at the house of a family friend. The property is really big; and when we drove up, I saw a bunch of lanterns lining up a pathway and a table with the ring on it at the end. I jokingly told him I wasn’t ready, and he said, ‘Too bad!’ He proposed, and then our families popped out of the bushes, along with my dog, who was wearing a bandana that said his parents were getting married!”

Seven months later on June 19, 2020, Whitney walked down the aisle at Our Lady of the Lake in Mandeville, wearing a simple yet elegant strapless gown with a layered train, cinched at the waist with a beaded belt. As 300 of their friends and relatives looked on, the couple exchanged vows and were pronounced man and wife, happy that their dream of a big wedding actually came true. “A ton of things kept getting cancelled and rescheduled,” says Whitney. “Even so, we had the most perfect window of opportunity open up, because they opened capacity up to 75 percent the day before our wedding. Then the weekend right after our wedding, they went back down again to 25 percent. We were so blessed!”

Blessed and excited to finally be wed, the newly married Kents joined their guests at The Lake House for their reception, where they dined on a buffet of delicious food that included pasta, crab cakes, penne chicken, and chargrilled oysters. As the night of dining and dancing wound down, Whitney and Brennan cut into a three-tier cake of different layers: almond and butter cream, red velvet, and bananas foster. After being sent off by their guests to start their honeymoon, the couple spent a few days at Brennan’s family’s lake house in Dadeville. Five months later, when travel restrictions allowed, they went to St. Lucia. Even with so much seeming to conspire against couples hoping to marry in 2020, Whitney and Brennan never let hope slip through their fingers, and their families were there every step of the way. “Watching the wedding party from the room upstairs made both Whitney’s father and I

tear up,” says Whitney’s mother, Melanie Ward. “We felt so much joy!” “Everything that was going on made you realize that the little material things that you stress about when planning a wedding don’t really matter—it’s being able to spend your day with the people that you love that is the most important thing,” adds her sister, Elli LeRay. “We loved the fact that, throughout COVID, they never really got off track,” note Brennan’s sister, Blair Kent, and mother Robin. “They were getting married on that day and would deal with the restrictions, whatever they were. I think the entire time, their priority was just about getting married—whether it was just with immediate family, extended family, or the entire guest list.” In the end, love does what it does best: It won the day.

NORTHSHORE NEW & noteworthy Dr. Billy Michal Scholarship Award Recipient [Covington,LA] ] — Three years ago, Dr. Brasuell started a scholarship award in honor of his mentor, Dr. Billy Michal. “I simply wouldn’t be the pediatric dentist that I am today had I not met Dr. Billy Michal... His dedication to education is the reason that I wanted to honor him with the scholarship award and to all the exceptional students we see in our practice.” states Dr. Brasuell.

North Oaks Sports Medicine Selects Student-Athletes of the Spring Season [HAMMOND, LA] — North Oaks Sports Medicine certified athletic trainers have joined with North Oaks Orthopaedic Specialty Center providers to select Kaitlyn Norman of Springfield High School and Michael “Konnor” Graham of Hammond High Magnet School as “Student-Athletes of the Spring Season” for February-April 2021.

Each year we create a topic for our high school seniors to write on as an entry for the scholarship. The topic we chose this year was “How has 2020 shaped you? Has it changed your future plans or career goals in any way?”, and the amazing mindsets of our graduating seniors truly shined through their words. To choose a recipient, our staff reads each of the essay submissions and votes on their favorite essay. One of the main necessities when starting college is a laptop so we thought this year’s award of an Apple MacBook Air would be greatly appreciated by anyone soon-to-be college student. The recipient of our 3rd Annual Dr. Billy Michal Scholarship Award recipient is Caleb Nicotri, a senior at St. Paul’s High School. Caleb will be attending the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he will be studying Neuroscience. He has also been playing soccer since age 4, and will continue playing the sport that he loves at UAB. We have watched Caleb grow up with us at Dr. Brasuell’s for the past 14 years and we are so excited about his future endeavors and wish him all the best!

In May 2021, the North Oaks Sports Medicine team will choose a “Student-Athlete of the Year” from all season honorees. Nomination forms are available at www.northoaks.org/studentathlete or can be requested by calling North Oaks Sports Medicine at (985) 230-5248.
