Mystery of the Copeland Isle

The sailing ship The Rival was driven ashore on Derrymore Island during the recent powerful storms. She suffered the loss of her spars, bowsprit and bulwarks. She was on her way from Limerick to Liverpool when a ferocious storm hit her. The vessel was completely at the mercy of the wind while being driven between the Maharee Islands and was lucky to have survived being totally wrecked.

From – Kerry Evening Post, 13 May 1876 The barque Copeland Isle set sail from England for Picton, Lake Ontario, in April last year with a cargo of railway iron, fire-clay and bricks. After several days at sea she sprung a leak and was taking in water so fast that the crew had to jettison ten tons of cargo to keep her afloat.

They spent the next few days working the pumps but decided the situation was hopeless and abandoned the vessel at the mouth of Dingle Bay with all sails set. The crew of twelve, who had taken to two boats, were spotted by the Dingle pilot Joseph O’Flaherty in his smack Curbat.

He came up to them and offered to take them back to their ship which was drifting across Dingle Bay towards the Blaskets. However, the ship’s captain refused the offer and O’Flaherty towed the two boats to Dingle harbour where the crew were well treated by the coastguard.

That same morning the Wizard,crewed by D. O’Flaherty, T. Devine and a young lad named Thomas Sheehy, made a delivery to the Tearaght lighthouse and seeing the derelict Copeland Isle adrift in the bay they boarded her. While the young Sheehy lad took the wheel the two men attended to the sails and after a long struggle against wind and tide they managed to bring her safely into Dingle harbour in the early hours of the following morning.

It remains a mystery as to how two men and a boy were able to salvage the ship when twelve able seamen decided to abandon her.

Ballyferriter Police From - Freeman’s Journal, 23 January 1841 The police court of inquiry, in Dingle, has resulted in extreme punishment for all of the police based in Ballyferriter. It is understood that the Acting County Inspector has directed that the entire force of police in the village be broken up and the men removed to separate regions of the country.

[No information provided regarding the background to this inquiry].

On the same night the Medusa of Sunderland was caught in the storm and was completely wrecked at Smerwick Harbour. One of her crew was drowned while the rest are safe ashore. The crew reported being in company of a large vessel which, they say, was wrecked on one of the Blasket Islands. Part of a large vessel has been washed up near Smerwick Harbour and is believed to be from the Blasket wreck.

No survivors have been reported.

A large vessel is at anchor off Ventry Harbour with only her mainmast intact. It is also reported that a ship has foundered close to Bull Head with all crew lost.

Sheep Stealers Arrested From – Kerry Evening Post, 2 August 1848 A notorious gang of Dingle sheep thieves, from the Milltown Commons, was arrested this week. Based on information provided to the police, the most prominent member of the gang was caught red-handed. His name is Devane and he was apprehended while on his way down from the mountain while carrying two dead sheep in a bag on his back. The police then raided the homes of the other members of the gang and discovered a large amount of mutton and sheepskins of newly slaughtered animals.

No site for Dingle Library From – Kerryman, 9 November 1912 The town of Dingle has been guaranteed a grant under the Carnegie Free Library scheme but has encountered a serious problem. To avail of the funding the town must provide a free site for the building. While several sites have been offered they are not in a central location. If a suitable site cannot be obtained there is a grave risk of losing the grant.

A deputation met with landowner Lord Ventry last Tuesday and requested him to provide one of his several suitable sites on Green Street but his Lordship refused. However, he offered two sites on Grey’s Lane – one at the upper end of the lane and the other at the lower end. The deputation considered this offer but deemed the sites unsuitable. The search for a suitable location continues. [The Carnegie library, on Green Street, opened in 1918].

Dunquin Man Dies in Snowstorm From – Limerick Chronicle, 24 February 1838 West Kerry experienced a severe snowstorm recently resulting in the death of one man and extensive damage to some dwellings. A man named Guillan was caught in the snowstorm while on his way home to Donquin [sic]. He was found dead on the road some two miles from his home having perished in the bitterly cold conditions. Numerous houses in Dingle and the surrounding area suffered serious damage when their roofs collapsed under the weight of the snow.

Ar Scáth A Chéile – A Community Project Who doesn't love colourful flags dancing in the breeze? They give an instant feeling of festival, celebration. We fly bunting to celebrate, we hoist flags to symbolise achievement and identity.

The prayer flags of Tibet are said to carry good intentions, positivity and spirituality on the wind to spread throughout the land.

As a way of bringing the community together, to be part of something that can connect us all to celebrate, I have created a project that can bring us all together in spite of the current restrictions.

The collected flags will be sewn together to make bunting that will be hung in various locations around the peninsula as part of Féile na Bealtaine 2021. At a time when we can't visit our friends and neighbours we will be able to see their flags and know that there are things to be thankful for and that there is something good around the corner.

Small Changes: Household Appliances

In the fifteen years that we have lived in our home we have had to replace 3 washing machines, 3 dishwashers, an electric oven, a chest freezer and 3 televisions. The televisions I can explain; the first was not compatible with saorview, the second fell foul to a power surge (top tip - buy a surge protector!) while the third lost a valiant battle with a 3 year old. In the case of every other appliance the repair engineer told us that there wasn’t any discernible reason for the breakdown and that we were just unlucky (apparently I was just being cynical when I enquired whether it was a coincidence that the warranties had just expired). We were also told on every single occasion that it would be cheaper to buy a new product rather than repair the existing appliance. This is a scenario that will hopefully occur less frequently in the future as new EU regulations on eco design measures came into effect on the 1st of March this year.

Under the new regulations manufacturers will be required to improve the life span, maintenance, upgradability, reusability, recyclability and waste handling of appliances. For example, manufacturers will have to make spare parts easily available to all professional repairers (encouraging growth in the product repair industry) for a minimum of 7-10 years and those parts will have to be easily accessible within the machine so that they can be replaced without damaging the product. Essentially these regulations will force appliance manufacturers to change their current business model so that they contribute to circular economy objectives i.e. end the current throwaway trend which depletes natural resources. These rules are currently applicable to large household appliances (dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators, lamps and TVs / monitors) as these products are considered to be the greatest contributors to waste and landfill when they fail too quickly and are unrepairable at a competitive cost. However, it is likely that these requirements will be expanded to other product categories in time.

Most domestic appliances are used on a daily basis for years. This means that the bulk of their environmental impact comes from their everyday use rather than their manufacture. They use electricity, for example, which is often sourced from fossil fuels. Minimum energy efficiency standards have been in effect for many years but the new rules include provisions to make appliances even more energy efficient so that EU households could potentially save up to €150 a year in energy costs. To complement the new eco-design directive, the EU energy labelling system is also being updated and simplified to steer consumers towards the best products.

The new system removes the confusing A+++ etc. grades and instead reintroduces the original A to G scale (with the A grade initially being left blank to allow for improved efficiencies).

Consumers often overlook the significant operating costs associated with household appliances even though all energy labels include energy consumption information in the form of the number of kilowatt hours (kWh; units of electricity) that an appliance will use per year or per cycle under specified operating conditions. When choosing a new appliance this information allows the consumer to compare products based on their operating costs (would you be better off spending more on an energy efficient model that costs less to run?). These labels also provide other performance information such as washing and drying performance, water consumption and noise levels. environmentally sustainable appliance are the presence of eco cycle and half cycle options in addition to choosing the optimal sized product required to suit your needs. This last point is particularly important.

Despite improvements in appliance energy efficiency (i.e. a typical new fridge freezer uses only a third of the energy of a 10-year old model) and an increase in the number of consumers choosing to purchase the most energy efficient product they can afford, the electricity demand from household appliances is not slowing down. Industry specialists (Association of Home Appliance Producers) point out that this disconnect is due to efficiency gains being cancelled out by consumers choosing supersized products such as fridges and T.Vs. Regardless of the label on your appliances, correct usage, regular maintenance and cleaning (avoid harsh chemicals) should be undertaken so that expected operating costs are not exceeded and life spans are extended. For example, keep fridges full to reduce the amount of cold air that can escape when you open the door; unplug appliances when not in use to eliminate energy costs associated with standby power (also known as vampire power); keep an eye on the door seals of ovens and fridges for dirt, cracks and splits so that the appliance does not have to work harder to maintain the temperature; use water softeners (e.g. calgon, dishwasher salt) to prevent lime scale damage and improve the cleaning results; dust on the condenser coils of fridges and freezers reduce heat exchange requiring it to work harder while grease and spills in the oven place extra pressure on heating elements; do not overload washing machines; eliminate the build-up of detergents and softeners in washing machines and dishwashers which result in bad odours, mould growth, clogged pipes etc. by regularly cleaning filters, seals and detergent dispensers as well as putting on an empty hot wash with vinegar to clean the machine.

Essentially, follow the directions of the user manual or consult product websites and online maintenance advice from reputable sources! Using a plug in energy monitor (available to borrow from Dingle Library) is also a great way to monitor electricity usage to become aware of what it costs to run appliances and ensure they are working efficiently.

All electrical products will eventually fail but environmental responsibility does not end at this point. Recycling white goods means that valuable resources such as metals, glass and plastics can be used again in new products, resulting in less mining of raw materials. Appropriate recycling also ensures hazardous substances contained in some appliances such as lead and mercury and HFCs do not threaten the environment or human health.

The retail price of all electrical and electronic items includes a vEMC (a visible environmental management costs). This cost funds the two collective compliance schemes in Ireland (WEEE Ireland and the European Recycling Platform) which ensure that all household waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is handled without causing harm to the environment. Under these compliance schemes all WEEE, including household appliances, can be recycled free of charge in any civic amenity centre and all retailers are obliged to take back similar type WEEE when you purchase a new product.

I feel that I have been very blessed to have been guided by God to this beautiful part of his creation, and to find such an amazing rapport with the communities in Tralee and, in particular, those on the Dingle Peninsula.

Saying thank you to so many people is bound to get me into trouble, because you have all been so very special and I don't want to miss anyone out! But I particularly want to say a big thank you to the lovely Camp community. To have been part of such a warm and welcoming community has been a joy. Thank you from both Keith and I – we will always cherish our time in Camp. Thank you to everyone who have sent such thoughtful messages and gifts.

Thanks must also go to the Dingle community. From the very start of sharing ideas about the restoration of the beautiful St. James Church, I have received encouragement and support from so many in the Dingle community. Over the years, St. James Church has been a central part in the life of the community. Our wonderful ecumenical Christmas Services were such an important community event. I will continue to remain on the Board of the Friends of St. James and be part of the on-going project to repair and restore the church for future generations to enjoy, and will look forward to meeting our Dingle friends once again, when the restrictions are eased.

Finally, I must say a big thank you to the Priests in the Roman Catholic communities in Tralee and on the Peninsula. You have been outstanding in your friendship and sharing in special services and events, which has been a very important part of my ministry with the communities in which I have served.

Abair amhrán The Grotto at An Díseart was lit continually in memory of all we lost in our community because of Covid 19 and indeed for all who have been affected.

The lights were turned off on St. Patrick's Day. Brighter days are ahead.

Many people enjoy An Díseart Gardens during lockdown – which are open daily. Birds are singing now and will begin to prepare their nests. Work is ongoing surveying which of the wildflowers, planted last year have seeded for this year, this work will take a number of seasons to establish which of the Irish Wildflowers will reseed annually in the garden. The hedghogs have been in hibernation and will hopefully emerge soon.

An Díseart will re open when allowed to do so. During the year since the first Covid lockdown, the Díseart Team and Board were busy with housekeeping matters, translating and the development of the new website, ongoing maintenance and planning, as well as matters relating to good governance – all done with regular meetings on Zoom. Students from SHU will not be in Dingle this year but their return is planned for early 2022. They have fond memories of their time here, as we are told through regular contact that we have with the SHU faculty.

An Díseart are offering a Residency to a Verbal Irish Language Poet from Sept 2021-February 2022. We are extremely grateful to Ealaín na Gaeltachta for sponsoring this bursary. Accommodation is available to the person appointed along with all the facilities in An Díseart. This will be an opportunity for a Poet to develop his/her work and to present it to the public. What’s the Story with Prebiotics and Probiotics?

Just when we have our head around something new, the health experts add another layer of information which can throw us right back at ground zero. This can be said about the probiotic and prebiotic conundrum!

Microorganisms that inhabit the human body, on the skin, in the gut, in the mouth, behind the ears, up the bum, just about everywhere outnumber all other human cells by about 10 to 1. Because of their tiny size they only amount to about 3 percent of our total body mass, roughly 2kg for the average adult. Despite being microscopic, they contribute to the health status of every part of the body either directly or indirectly through their activity, so much so that the collective microbiome is increasingly viewed by scientists as an organ in its own right.

According to research from the Human Microbiome Project (HMP) in 2014, which is a collaborative research project involving more than 80 universities and scientific institutions from around the globe, there are more than 10,000 different species living inside us. This is the first time that researchers have mapped the quantity and species of microorganisms inhabiting the bodies of healthy humans. According to HMP Co-ordinator, James M. Anderson, M.D., Ph.D “We now have a very good idea of what is normal for a healthy Western population and are beginning to learn how changes in the microbiome correlate with physiology and disease.” The application of this research will be far-reaching – now that we understand what the normal human microbiome looks like, we should be able to understand how changes in the microbiome are associated with, or even cause, illnesses.

Probiotics is the collective term of beneficial bacteria within the human microbiome. In the gut, they break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates in our diet into nutrients that we can then absorb. They can produce valuable substances such as certain vitamins and anti-inflammatories that our body cannot produce. They are as important to us as we are to them for survival, yet as their host, we have underestimated their significance and treated them badly. Our modern diet and lifestyle is a challenge for these bacteria, from the overuse of disinfectants and antibiotics to junk food and stress, while we would like them to come live with us, we do very little to make them feel welcome!

This is where prebiotics come in to play. Prebiotics are a type of fibre from carbohydrates that many species of beneficial bacteria rely on for nourishment and survival. It is impossible to have a healthy colony of probiotics in your gut if you do not feed them. Prebiotics have become a bit of a buzz word, the new health supplement, but in reality, prebiotics are plant fibres we do not digest, which end up in the colon as dinner for the trillions of probiotics including bifidobacteria and the lactobacillus family. Cultivating an efficient army of probiotics within your microbiome means feeding them and encouraging them to stay. The greater the welcome, the greater the number and diversity of bacteria which ultimately means greater health for you!

Not all fibre is equal when it comes to prebiotics. Researchers have pinpointed the ideal menu for gut bacteria which differs from what we hosts consider appetizing. Inulin, fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), betaglucans, resistant starch and pectin are just some of the fibres that send probiotics into seventh heaven! Jerusalem artichoke, chicory root, dandelion leaves are the richest sources of inulin, followed by garlic, onion and leeks. This inulin fibre helps to increase the number and diversity of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Oats, barley and mushrooms are great sources of betaglucans, which also improve population numbers and variety of species. Betaglucans act as anti-viral agent in the upper 10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

respiratory tract and are effectively recommended for cold and flu viruses. Early studies of betaglucans’ efficacy against Covid-19 is hopeful too, providing protection from Covid-19 and less severity of symptoms.

Probiotics consume pectin, found in apples, to produce a short chain fatty acid called butyric acid which improves the health of the intestinal lining in which they reside. These short chain fatty acids help regulate electrolyte balance including sodium, magnesium, calcium and water levels. They are anti-inflammatory compounds and are involved proper digestion and bowel movements.

Other prebiotic foods include beans and legumes, flaxseeds, burdock root, wheat bran and seaweeds. Sauerkraut is a perfect example of the relationship between probiotics and prebiotics. The juice from shredded or bruised raw cabbage leaves provide the prebiotic fibre for Lactobacilli bacteria (found on raw cabbage leaves) to multiply and flourish. As they increased in number, they continue digesting the cabbage leaves until the leaves are completely fermented. At the end of the process the volume of beneficial bacteria present is enough to preserve the sauerkraut and keep away harmful bacteria that would otherwise spoil it. This was the one of the original methods of preserving food and provided humans with a great source of probiotics as a bonus.

The Human Microbiome Project is ongoing and will provide invaluable preventative measures and treatment options for disease in years to come. In the meantime, roll out your intestinal red carpet and welcome some good bacteria into your body. Make them feel welcome and encourage them to stay long-term, enticing them with the food they love, the company of others and a well-maintained home to call their own.

This would not have been possible without the financial help of Kerry County Council who awarded us €1,000 from the Community Support Fund. We acknowledge this support and are very grateful to them.

The Manchester Merchant was destroyed by fire and sank just off the Inch bar on 15th January 1903. The ship’s master, Captain Couch, was injured in the fire and hospitalised in Dingle. When he recovered he presented the bell to the people of Inch.

Kerry Short Film Bursary 2021 €10,000 award to produce a short drama/documentary film The Kerry Short Film Bursary 2021 is open for applications. A fund of €10,000 will be awarded to the successful applicant towards the cost of producing a 10-12min short drama or documentary film in the county. This Bursary is funded through Kerry County Council and the Arts Council of Ireland and is intended to support & encourage filmmaking within the county. Filmmakers will also be assisted through Kerry College - Monavalley Campus, Tralee, a centre of excellence for film training. The deadline for receipt of applications is 5pm on Thursday April 22nd.

In 2021 the focus is on a strong creative connection with Kerry. At least one of each application’s core creative team (Writer/Director/ Producer) must be living in Kerry. If you are interested in networking with Kerry based writers, directors & producers please contact siobhan@ screenkerry.ie.

Kerry ETB’s Film Development Officer, Siobhan O’Sullivan, outlined “the importance of the film bursary in developing the film sector within the county” and emphasised that “in 2021 we are looking for fresh voices and new stories that reflect modern Ireland.” Kerry County Council Arts Officer, Kate Kennelly, described the award as “a critical way to support filmmaking talent and to highlight locations, facilities and skills available in Kerry.” Patrick Connor Scarteen, Mayor of Kerry, further outlined that “this bursary is an important route for filmmakers gaining experience in their craft while it continues to promote Kerry as a location for film.” Owen O’Donnell, Director of Further Education & Training with Kerry ETB, commented that “Kerry College, a centre of excellence for film training, is delighted to see this bursary which is an amazing opportunity for anyone interested in filmmaking.”

Farming News Louis Murchan IRELAND TO GET IMPROVED ACCESS TO JAPANESE BEEF MARKET The Minister of State with responsibility for new market development, Martin Heydon T.D., has announced that agreement has been reached with the Japanese authorities on the export of Irish minced meat and meat preparations.

This expansion of beef access follows on from the removal of the age restriction on beef exports secured in May 2019 when beef from cattle of all ages became eligible for export to Japan.

This good news for Irish beef exports reflects the cordial and productive relationships that have been developed with official and trade contacts since the appointment of an agricultural attaché in the Irish Embassy in Tokyo in 2019 and the placement of a Bord Bia Market specialist in Japan Irish agri-food exports to Japan were worth more than €147 million in 2020, an increase of €14.6 million or 11% since 2019. The European trade agreement with Japan, which entered into force in 1 February 2019 as the largest open trade zone in the world, provides an excellent opportunity to expand food and drink trade with Japan.

Irish beef exports to Japan increased from 2,323, tonnes in 2019 to 4,120 tonnes in 2020, growing in value from €9.5 million to €15.7 million in the same period. The majority of this was in the form of bovine tongues, a delicacy in Japan, and other beef offal. The agreement of access for Irish minced meat and burgers to Japan should help Ireland increase sales due to the ease of shipping those products by sea and the Ireland’s reputation as supplier of beef burgers in the foodservice channel. Irish beef exports to Japan increased from 2,323, tonnes in 2019 to 4,120 tonnes in 2020, growing in value from €9.5 million to €15.7 million in the same period. (Source: CSO Trade statistics). In addition, a new and improved online application system for Nitrates Derogation applications has been put in place. This system is open now until 31 March 2021 for 2021 applications and farmers are encouraged to engage with their advisors to determine if they should apply for a Nitrates Derogation.

The exporting farmer will need to have his slurry movement or exports logged on the new system and a text message will issue to the importing farmer alerting him to log on to the online system to accept the movement.

The online system is aimed at simplifying the application process, while introducing an element of over-sight, similar to the “Big Brother id Watching You Syndrome”. However, this supposedly will assist farmers to avoid penalties. Rather than remembering to post a form at year end, farmers can manage this though the year as the movements happen, allowing them to plan more effectively to remain within the Nitrates limits, thus avoiding penalties. Time will tell.

Several farmers incur penalties each year because they did not submit the Record 3 Form by the deadline of 31st December. To facilitate the transition, the Department will accept both on-line declarations and paper forms until 1 July 2021, after which date use of the new on-line system will be mandatory.

Farmers not already registered for agfood.ie can do so by logging onto www.agfood.ie and clicking the 'Register' button. The Department will be engaging with advisors and farmers in the coming weeks to explain and bring this new facility to their attention. Farmers are obliged to ensure compliance with the limits of the Nitrates Regulations, thus avoiding penalties for breaching the limits of 170 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare, or the limit for those who hold an approved derogation the limit is 250 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare. Derogations are granted, subject to conditions, following an on-line application process by the herd owner or his advisor.

2021 applications are open now until 31st March 2021.

Measures all farmers can take to avoid exceeding the nitrates limits of 170 kg/ha (or 250 kg/ha for derogation holders) include: • Renting additional land • Reducing livestock numbers

NEW STUDY TO EXAMINE OPPORTUNITIES IN WOOL MARKET

• Exporting enough slurry/farmyard manure

In an attempt to expand the financial opportunities in the sheep sector, the Department of Agriculture has commissioned a study into the wool market and is looking for input from sheep farmers and other stakeholders to guide the commissioning of a major Feasibility Study on Wool.

There are records which the farmer needs to submit to the Dept of Agriculture Food & the Marine to have these activities taken in to account. These are:

Asking for those interested to identify what they see as market opportunities for wool and also to contribute to the development of Terms of Reference for the study, it has been noted that wool is plentiful in this country This is why €100,000 has been secured for what is a major piece of work assessing whether or not we can develop a variety of wool products for national and international markets.

• Record 4 Form – Temporary Movement of Animals

Wool is sustainable and wool is renewable, so it makes great sense for us to see where its potential lies. While its use in textiles is of course established, it is also an organic, low carbon, natural material which can perhaps be used, viably, in a wide range of products such as fertilisers, insulation and packaging. It will be necessary to know where people believe the opportunities are. The feasibility study when produced will assist in developing a roadmap for the Irish Wool Industry. And with the help and guidance of a Wool Forum Stakeholder Group it is expected that it will help shape future policy on wool production NEW ON-LINE SYSTEM MOVEMENT OF ORGANIC FERTILISERS ANNOUNCED A new online system to record movements of organic manure between holdings will replace the almost 16,000 paper forms submitted annually by farmers bringing a number of key benefits. These include simplifying the system of reporting of movements and importantly also giving farmers access to more prompt information on their compliance with the Nitrates limits where they are exporting or importing manure.

Under the Nitrates Regulations farmers are obliged to farm within the limit of 170 kgs of nitrogen per hectare (or 250kgs/N/ha for those who hold an approved derogation. One of the measures farmers can take to reduce nitrate levels is to export slurry to another holding. Previously these movements had to be declared to the Department on a paper form by 31st December annually, (or 31st October for derogation holders). Submission 14 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

The on-line system will update the Departments Nitrates & Phosphorus Statements for each farmer periodically though the year to allow them see the effect an export/import has on their overall (cattle only) N&P levels.

MENTAL HEALTH IN AGRICULTURE: FARMERS VIEWS SOUGHT Having hit the one-year milestone of Covid-19, and gone through three lockdowns so far in the past 12 months, many people are finding it more and more difficult to adjust to the isolation imposed and required to help beat this nasty virus. Any that that helps relieve these pressures and strains is welcome. And here’s something worth considering. Reading at least.

Though aimed at the farming community, it applies to everyone, so please take note. Mental Health Ireland and Dr Pat Bogue of Broadmore Research & Consulting are working together to establish, from an Irish perspective, what training needs and resources will be beneficial to provide practical supports to address mental health in farming.

A partnership was developed within a number of EU countries to specifically look at the mental health needs of farmers and farm families and others involved in the agricultural sector. In order to develop an implementation plan to deliver programmes and create resources for the farming community, it has been decided to undertake a training needs analysis. The group will be submitting a project proposal for consideration by the Erasmus+ programme.

This partnership is seeking members of the farming community to fill out an Anonymous Survey, in order to establish and gain a better understanding of

the needs in farming to develop the project proposal. It is welcoming the views of farmers, farm families and those working with farmers (advisors, vets and others in the industry). This is a good thing because there is so much conversation about mental health and wellbeing that people understand and relate to it as an important quality of overall health.

But the Tans went out on Tuesday, 22 March, and they stopped at Lispole School, and there was fellows watching in the place above, and some of them divided and went down Bóthar na Lathaí. Ah, they said, Jeffers, now – a Tralee man that was watching with two fellows with him, ‘They’re gone down searching Fothrach.’ And more of them went along the track, and over by your place (the railway tracks via Páirc an Teampaill) and over to John Larry’s (O’Sullivan), you see, and three of them with a machine gun.

They hit the school, they wanted just to flush them, and after a couple of bursts of machine gun, we got the order, I was on the road with the main body, you know, there were about twenty of us there to ‘Retreat’. Jesus, to retreat where, there was no orders. A lot of them went into the Glen, that was a mistake, you know that big glen there. There was several of us went up the road (the old road between church and schoolhouse from main road up to Gráig), but the fellows that went into the glen – there was no alterations or no planning for a retreat – they went up the glen, and the end of the glen opened up on to a an open field, and the first man out was Tommy Hauley, and he was shot, he was hit on the head. The four more, they were so near him, they had to surrender. They were brought down along the glen, do you see, and Mike Harrington, now, and I give him credit for all this, Mike Harrington, John Street, he was in the American Army, he was a soldier, alright. He saw the lads coming down with the Tan opposite him, and he made one roar, ‘Come now lads, get them’ Jesus, the Tan got such a shock he dropped his rifle and ran, and the four that was behind him with a prisoner each, they all ran like hell, without firing a shot, they ran. There was one of them came up the road to the school, he was going to bomb the school, he was shot, he wasn’t killed, he was wounded. When the machine gunner saw the fellows above running they packed up and ran away too.

The funny thing about it, Lispole ambush was supposed to be, that we were wiped out, the Tans were gone, and the lads (our wounded) took away. Tom Ashe tried to come back from the glen again, he came out to the road again, he didn’t know where the machine was, he was in open field where the machine was, he got him. Well, he didn’t kill him dead, he died that night.

The Tans left, and we were able to take away Tom Ashe and Tommy Hauley, we had the place to ourselves. After about an hour the marines came out, there was no one there then. The Lispole Ambush The events of the Lispole Ambush took place over three days between 20-22 March 1921. A large Volunteer force took up position in Lispole on Sunday 20th March and remained in place for three days awaiting their intended target. Word of their plan reached Crown forces in Dingle and they attacked the Volunteer positions on Tuesday 22nd of March. Taken by surprise, the Volunteers avoided a major disaster by effecting a fighting retreat to safety, though outflanked and under heavy machine gun fire.

Three Volunteers, named above, lost their lives in the engagement.

A planned programme to commemorate this event has been postponed to a later date due to Covid restrictions.

A commemoration wreath will be placed at the monument on Monday 22 March in a private ceremony to honour those who took part in the engagement.

Dingle Notes Richie Williams STRAND STREET WORKS. Kerry County Council staff started improvement works at Strand Street this week on a programme which will take up to 6 weeks to complete. Minor traffic delays are expected but the planned improvements should be a great benefit long term to the business outlets and residents in the area. The work includes road widening in the seaward side and footpath widening in the landward side to facilitate Social Distancing and Outside Dining and will be undertaken in 4 phases. The funding for such works comes under the Active Travel Programme which has taken on a more important and urgent role over the past 12 months.

COVID. The clear positives of the way out of the present crisis was evident this week when the first public vaccinations were completed in West Kerry. The spread of the pandemic has been well curtailed in Corca Dhuibhne and the further rollout however delayed will eventually put an end to the frustration and huge financial and mental stress suffered at various levels by so many all over the world.

TOWN DEVELOPMENTS. Further to items included under this heading in our last edition I have been informed that the Junction at the top of Goat Street and the New Link Road was completed to Full Standard Safety Requirements and further works are not planned at this junction. Our readers suggestion was that a roundabout would help make this a safer junction. Since then another reader suggests that road speed bumps/rumbles on all sides leading up to the junction would slow traffic before reaching the junction which is a much cheaper way to inprove the situation. Another reader suggests that parking be restricted on the Goat Street side of the junction to allow more space for traffic negotiating/ turning down that street.

The withdrawal of some rubbish bins from various parts of town was considered necessary as bins in these areas were being constantly used by people for the disposal of domestic waste. It appears that even over the past 12 months of covid restrictions and lockdown a huge amount of domestic rubbish is still appearing in the remaining bins. The West Kerry Transfer Station in Lispole is open 6 days a week, is easily accessable from the road and caters for all sizes and types of waste from individual bags to large amounts with separate units for recycling of carboard and electrical goods and paint tins etc.

On this, the occasion of the first anniversary of Seamus Devane’s passing, his wife Maureen along with his daughters Marina and Áine and his son Micheál would like to convey our deepest gratitude to all those who sympathised with us and supported us at the time of our sad loss, one year ago.

Despite the physical restrictions which impacted so heavily on the requiem arrangements, we sincerely appreciate the tremendous efforts which were made by all of our relatives and friends to express their condolences and their support to us throughout that period, a generosity which still continues up until today. We expressly wish to thank the very many of you who sent us Mass cards, who made phone calls from Ireland and abroad, and who sent kind messages of sympathy, prayer and succour. Each and every communication was gratefully received and was a source of comfort to us.

To Fr. Michael Moynihan we convey our gratitude for respectfully receiving the remains and for celebrating the funeral mass under circumstances which were new and unfamiliar to all of us. We are very grateful to Fr. Jim Sheehy and to Fr. Tomás O hIceadha who also officiated at the ceremony. We also wish to thank Dónall O’Connor for his professional service. For the nursing and healthcare staff at Dingle Community Hospital we have the greatest of respect and the highest praise. Seamus spent the final months of his life under their care and he couldn’t have asked for better. His days there were peaceful and painless, and the dedicated attention which he received was second to none, we will be eternally grateful.

This is peak lambing season, the Irish Farmers Association are asking that all dog owners be vigilant at all times and keep their dog under control.

DINGLE WAY Welcome funding for The Dingle Way walking trail - Slí Corca Dhuibhne. €200,000 has been granted to the Dingle Way for work to be carried out on the final section of the 178km National Walking Trail at Más an Tiompáin, near Cloghane.

The Dingle Way Committee acknowledge the support of Deputy Brendan Griffin TD Fine Gael at all times for the Dingle Way project. Fianna TD Norma Foley Minister for Education joins Deputy Griffin in welcoming the announcement.

I hope you are all keeping well in the current climate, I find that simply taking it day by day is the best way to handle it all at this time! There is certainly enough doom and gloom in the world at the moment, so this week I have decided to write a blog post full of hope!

Having had a few weeks now to settle back into work and start looking at the year ahead, I’ve found in the past week or so that I am feeling more hopeful about things to come….

While the 2021 tourism season will undoubtedly once again be very different, as it looks like we’ll still be unable to welcome our international visitors back, I am looking towards the year ahead with optimism at welcoming many Irish visitors to our beautiful Dingle Peninsula. There are several reasons for my newfound optimism, however! For one, the days are finally beginning to get longer. As we say here in Ireland, there’s ‘a grand stretch’ in the evenings! It makes such a difference when it doesn’t get dark so early – we now have daylight until 6 o clock in the evening, and that is a guaranteed mood booster!

I felt that with the arrival of spring on the 1st of February, there was a new lease of life to things…. The daffodils are out, the days are longer, the weather is getting better (subject to interpretation!!). Either way, I think there is a feeling of hope in the air, but perhaps I’m the only one that feels it at the moment!!

Aside from all the little things that are making the days more pleasant, from a tourism point of view I am also optimistic. Though we are still in lockdown, and the chances of international travel are still non-existent, I am hopeful that with the combination of lower-case numbers

and ever-increasing vaccinations in the country, the Coronavirus situation can only get better.

If we persevere for a little while longer, fingers crossed, when everything is allowed to open once again, it will be for good. I hope that this time, when the doors of our local businesses open, they are allowed to stay open.

But most of all, I am hopeful that before long, we will have visitors back on our beautiful Dingle Peninsula, experiencing all it has to offer. To have people back making the nerve-wracking drive over the Conor Pass, or taking in the unique sights that are only along the Slea Head Drive.

I can’t wait for people to once again walk the Dingle Way, or explore Glanteenassig Forest.

To swim in the Atlantic Ocean and walk along the soft sand at Ventry Beach, Fermoyle Beach or Inch Beach. I look forward to hearing the screams of delight as children and adults alike experience sea life up close with our sea safari and eco marine boat trips, or stand in awe as they set foot on the Great Blasket Island.

I can’t wait for people to sit down to a meal of the freshest fish, in one of the Dingle Peninsula’s many fantastic restaurants. I look forward to pints of local beer being poured as visitors sit around in a cosy pub and listen to traditional Irish music, performed only as it can be, by a local musician and friends. To see the glint in the eyes of an old group of friends as they squash into a snug. I look forward to seeing people touring the Dingle Distillery and experiencing the product right at its root. To seeing golf balls fly high in the air at Ceann Sibéal and Castlegregory, and surf boards hitting the waves in the Maharees. I can’t wait for our village streets to buzz again, visitors taking in the colourful buildings, and for the hills and mountains along the Dingle Peninsula to once again welcome hikers and guide them on their way. It is often said that the true magic of the Dingle Peninsula is in its people, however, a lot of those people are our visitors who stay with us. Without our visitors, there is a missing element of what makes the Dingle Peninsula the very special place it has become. I can’t wait for the day where the Dingle Peninsula is alive again with the sounds of laughter, happiness, discovery, awe, magic, appreciation, exploration, experience, enjoyment, fun and lots of craic!

Though we may not be close to that day just yet, knowing that times like these will return provides its own comfort.

I saw a saying last week that went ‘More days behind us than ahead of us’…We’ll get there. As my favourite Irish saying goes ‘Ní bhíonn in aon rud ach seal’ (nothing is permanent).

Annascaul Notes Obituary It was with deep sadness that we in Annascaul learned of the passing of Joan Sharpe née Walsh on 13th March peacefully at her home in Tipperary in the care of her family.

Predeceased by her husband Billy and infant daughter Angela.

Deeply regretted by her loving children, Billy, Marie Conway (Herbertstown, Co. Limerick), Bryan, Patricia (Annascaul), Jacqueline Burns (Solohead), Siobhan Leech (London), sister Mona (Rochleau,USA), devoted sister-in law Tess Ryan (Ennis), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, the Green family, relatives and friends.

Joan, a nurse by profession, left Annascaul in the early 50's to train in Surrey, England and was there for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. She later returned to Ireland and worked in a nursing home in Tipperary run by the wife of Dr. Paddy Kennedy (an uncle of John Hartnett). It was in Tipperary she met her husband Billy Sharpe and settled there and raised six children. She returned every summer to holiday in Annascaul.

Joan is remembered for her dedication to her work and caring nature.

Harissa Baked Chicken, Pilaf Rice and Mint Yogurt Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School

Method for the chicken Mix the harissa, lemon juice, garlic and honey together. Generously rub this over the chicken. Place this in a bowl and leave this for a about an hour to marinate.

Preheat the oven to 170ºC Add the red onions and tomato to the bowl along with some olive oil, salt and pepper. Mix this all together. Place this in a roasting tray and then put this into the oven.

This will take about 40 minutes to cook. While this is cooking you can make the pilaf. for the rice

I have cooked this a few times and I always love it every time.

All parts of this complement each other, the spicy chicken served with a buttery pilaf rice and then a side of the mint yogurt to cool the spiciness and add a freshness to everything.

Harissa paste is a chili paste from North Africa. It adds a great kick and flavour to ingredients. Once you start adding it to dishes you probably will reach for it any time to want to liven up your cooking. Even though the harissa is fiery, when you add the lemons, garlic and honey you will find that it mellows but has great flavour.

The addition of the lemon juice, honey and garlic to the chili paste will add so much flavour to this.

Put a pan on over medium heat, add the butter and onion. Cook this for about 5 minutes. The onion should have softened at this stage. Add the spices, saffron and bay leaves and cook for a couple more minutes. Add the rice and stir until the grains are coated in the butter before stirring in the stock or water and salt. Bring to the boil and then cover with parchment paper.

Turn the heat down low and leave to cook for 20 minutes before turning off the heat. Check to see if the rice is cooked, add a few small bits of butter over the top of the rice, put the parchment back and leave this off the heat until the chicken is cooked.

Before serving use a fork to fluff up the rice. for the mint yogurt Mix the mint and yogurt together.

Serves 4-6

This Lent, we learn more about the suffering of people who have lost their homes and loved ones to war, and how they are rebuilding their lives through love, friendship and solidarity.

Awut and Ajak, (the ladies on this years Trócaire box) lost their homes and loved ones to the conflict in South Sudan. They fled their villages with nothing but the clothes on their back, trekking through miles of dangerous bushland with no food or water for themselves or their children. Awut arrived in the community of Malek frightened, but was welcomed with loving arms by her new neighbours. Some time later, Ajak returned to Malek after having been away with her husband who was a soldier. Here, in

this remarkable community, people whose lives were brought together by pain and suffering are starting new lives based on love, friendship and kindness. Every day remains a struggle for Awut and Ajak and their families. They struggle to earn money, grow food and attend school. Life continues to be full of challenges and obstacles for these amazing women, but they face these challenges together, with dignity and solidarity.

Trócaire works with local partners in South Sudan. Their programmes in South Sudan support communities and families in the following ways: Emergency aid such as food, water and sanitation and hygiene items. Seeds, tools and agricultural training to help people grow their own food. Counselling support to help people overcome the trauma they have experienced. Promoting peaceful coexistence between all the people of South Sudan

livelihoods continue to be affected by the Coronavirus. We remember those who have died, those who suffer, those who mourn, those who help and those who are working on the manufacture and distribution of a vaccine. We think of those who work in our local hospital.

They are the hearts and hands that care for, and are there for, our loved ones in their need. Mass is celebrated each weekday at 10.00am, each Saturday at 6.15pm and at 11.30am on Sundays.

This Lent through our Prayer, fasting and Almsgiving may we grow closer to God, become stronger in our Faith and through prayer and charity help those who are in great need.
