BAY WATCH DINGLE HARBOUR As I stroll down by the harbour for my leisurely walk, Take in the sights, with the tourists to talk, The tide is in with boats in and out, Did my eyes deceive me? I spotted a snout, A seal bobbed his head from out of the brine, Glistening pelt beneath the sunshine, There in his mouth was a tasty dish, Wriggling and slapping, a fine fat fish, I stood there so long and watched as he played, For the tourists it was such a rare display, Many walked past, it was if they were blind, For me it was easy to seek out and find, Wonderful Dingle, there is so much so see, On my daily walks, abundant for me.

West Kerry street artist Ciara McKenna is aiming to bring the Tralee to Fenit Greenway to life by creating a larger-than-life wildflower mural, with blossoms cascading along the walled part of the walk in Tralee town - known locally as the Green Mile. Incorporating local flora and fauna, Ciara is inviting community groups and members of the public to collaborate with her in the realisation this unique piece of street art. “I will base the mural on the many beautiful tiny flowers hidden in the hedgerows and walls of ‘The Green Mile’ part of the Greenway,” Ciara explained. “My hope is that locals and community groups, while out walking the Green Mile, will photograph these tiny wildflowers and post them to the project’s Facebook page.” Ciara - in consultation with Cathy Fischer, Kerry Biodiversity Officer - will then scale up these tiny delicate flowers to create a vivid piece of street art along the Greenway’s walls in Tralee town. “These delicate lifeforms have a huge impact on our mental health; this mirrors my belief that each person in a community has a role, each being has value, we all have a part to play,” she said, Ciara’s work ‘Grandma’s Hands’ - a large scale mural created in response to the pandemic and in tribute to our senior citizens - recently garnered national attention having featured on RTÉ’s ‘Ireland on Call’. A member of the public subsequently invited Ciara to come to Tralee and create a unique and uplifting work in a public space. People can post their photos to the project’s dedicated Facebook page https://m.facebook.com/FlowerScapeTraleeFenitGreenway/ Flowerscape - Tralee Greenway.

Building Resilience for Back to School Irene Ní Fhlannúra

The usual bedlam and excitement of heading back to school is this year tinged with nervousness and worry due to the ongoing Covid19 crisis, and rightly so. There is no question that the need for children to return to education and to the social setting of school is vitally important. Keeping our children, their teachers and families safe from infection is equally critical, yet finding the perfect solution is proving difficult, to say the least. The real difficulty lies in trying to find a solution for the whole of society that is acceptable, achievable and effective. Despite enormous efforts by Global and National Health authorities, there are still a cohort of people not following guidelines, there are industries not interested in guidelines and there are people for whom the guidelines are the least of their worries. While the media and those who provide its content, defend and attack each other, the rising apathy among society could soon become as deadly as the virus itself. The good news is, that despite the eejits, fake news and other distractions, the simple things you can do at home are probably the most effective to get your child safely back to school. Controlling the controllable is a strategy with scope, hope and along with soap, might be the best guidelines you can follow. Nutrition, physical activity, sleep and stress have the greatest influence on both adult and children’s immune health. There is no magic pill, potion, vaccine or medicine that can do better for our kids right now than what we can do for them at home to safeguard their health and wellness as they navigate a safe return to the classroom. Get you children off to a great start with a breakfast each morning of wholegrains, protein, healthy fats and fruit. This could be a low-sugar cereal with seeds and berries, a boiled egg on brown toast with tomatoes, mashed avocado with sardines on rye or a fruit bowl with unsweetened yogurt, topped with nuts or seeds. Old-fashioned porridge remains the most nutritious of the cereals. If you are buying boxed cereal, seek one with less than 9g sugar per 100g to keep sugar levels even. Even if you must add a spoon of honey it will still be more wholesome than the usual cereal offenders out there. Do not forget to top with the seeds/ nuts and some fruit for extra goodness. The lunch box can be more than a gap filler between breakfast and dinner. Lunch and the mid-morning snack are timely opportunities to refuel your child - both physically, mentally and keep their immune system alert. Good food choices for the lunchbox not only satisfies hunger but will sustain energy levels, improve concentration levels and create an environment for the body to thrive and survive viral and bacterial attacks. Carbohydrates provide the fuel for the body, the brain and are involved in the mobilization of immune cells. They are found in sugar, grains, fruit and vegetables. Once digested, carbohydrates are broken down to glucose (blood sugar) which in turn is used to supply the energy the 8 West Kerry Live

body needs. Wholegrains, whole fruit and vegetables not only end up as glucose, they also have antioxidants, fibre, vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy immune system. Sugar, on the other hand, provides no nutrition other than a quick burst of energy, which may or may not be welcomed in the classroom! Immunity may be suppressed by 50% for up to four hours following a small sugary snack - ample time for bacteria and viruses to move in and set up home! Refined grains on their own such as white flour, white pasta and white rice products convert to sugar quickly in the body, much like sugar itself and are stripped of the naturally occurring minerals and vitamins found in their natural state. If your child prefers white bread for sandwiches, strike a happy compromise by adding some colourful vegetables to the sandwich along with protein and an extra piece of fruit. Grilled peppers, grated carrots, shredded lettuce or baby spinach leaves, roast vegetables, olives, puréed vegetable spread are all interesting ways to get the veggies in sandwiches, salads, pitta pockets or tossed with wholegrain pasta or noodles for a change from sandwiches. The more colour and variety of carbohydrates the better- mix and match for an interesting and healthier lunch box. Protein provides the building blocks of all cells in the body and necessary to fuel growth and crucial to the immune system. Best sources come from meat, seafood, beans, tofu, nuts, seeds, cheese, and eggs as close to their natural state as possible. Processed meats such as luncheon meats, cured meats and packaged deli meat products have been linked to cancer of the colon and stomach, an avoidable risk to the immune system that we can do without. Instead, choose roast meat slices, unsalted nut and seed butters, good quality tuna or salmon, organic or local farm eggs and real cheese for protein. Bean spreads such as hummus are also a good source of protein. Oily fish is protein-rich and a source of omega 3 - important for all cells, but particularly beneficial to the inflammatory response of immune cells. Plant-based omega 3 is found in flax oil - use when making dips such as hummus, dressings, guacamole and nut spreads. These are inexpensive when made at home and can be tailored to suit your child's taste. While not the full picture when it comes to nutrition, immune health and Covid19, these simple suggestions are a step in the right direction towards greater resilience as we send our children back to school. Wishing all our students, school staff, teachers and parents a healthy and safe return! From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon (The Tearaght Lighthouse was commissioned 150 years ago in 1870. Some of its story is presented here from old newspapers and current sources.)

Preparations

From – Kerry Evening Post, 26 March 1864 A large smack, the Falcon, arrived in Dingle harbour in March 1864 with a cargo of building materials and stores to be used in the construction of a lighthouse on the Tearagh Rock – one of the Blasket Islands. The materials are being stored in Mr. Kavanagh’s premises until required. A Mr. Shakespeare has been sent down from Dublin to supervise proceedings.

Photos: Mossy Donegan

The Ballast Board has secured the steam tug Bishop to convey materials and personnel to the island and John O’Flaherty will pilot the vessel to and from the island. [Originally,Trinity House had recommended the Great Foze Rock, to the south-west of the Tearaght, as the location of the new lighthouse but the Ballast Board favoured the Tearaght. The island was owned by the Earl of Cork and ‘a Miss Hussey had an interest’, according to the Commissioners of Irish Lights].

The Estimated Cost

From – Tralee Chronicle, 26 April 1864. A few days ago one of the undertakers of the construction work and an engineer went into the Tearaght rock. After an inspection of several hours they marked out where the lighthouse is to be erected. The height of this dreary and stupendous rock is 591 feet [174m] above the level of the ocean. The first part of the work will involve creating a place of safety for those employed there, from the blasting which will be extensive. The time specified for the completion of the project is seven years and the cost is estimated at £100,000. [€13m + in today’s conversion].

The Bishop out of commission and threatened strike. From – Commissioners of Irish Lights website – www.irishlights.ie

In 1865 the steam tug Bishop developed boiler trouble and had to be taken out of commission. She was replaced by a hooker owned by pilot John O’Flaherty. In 1866 the stonecutters, masons and plasterers working on the lighthouse threatened to go on strike unless their daily pay was increased. Stonecutters and masons were paid five shillings per day and demanded an additional four pence per day. Plasterers were paid three shillings and sixpence per day and demanded an extra six pence per day. Their demands were met ‘without hesitation'.

Death of Worker

Source – www.marinetours.ie In 1867 one of the workers on the Tearaght Lighthouse fell to his death while collecting seagulls’ eggs to eat.

Notice to Mariners

From - Office of Irish Lights, 1 January 1870. Notice is hereby given, that a Lighthouse has been erected on TEARAGHT, the Westernmost of the Blasket Islands, County of Kerry from which a White Revolving Light will be exhibited on the evening of the 1st May, 1870, and continue thenceforth from sunset to sunrise. The Tower is Circular, of a Whitish Grey Colour, and is 57 feet in height [17+m] from base to vane The Light’s focal plane is 275 feet [84m approx:] above the level of the sea at high water spring tides. It will attain its greatest brilliancy every minute and a half, and should be seen in clear weather from a distance of 22 Nautical Miles. [The character of the light changed in August 1883 to two white flashes, in a fifteen-second period, followed by forty-five seconds of darkness].

Housing for Keepers

Source – www.irishlights.ie Two houses for the lighthouse keepers and their families were built on the island. The Census of Ireland for 1881 shows that there were 13 people living on the Tearaght, including nine children while the figure for the 1891 Census shows that number reduced to 10.

More Deaths on the Tearaght

From – Irish Independent, 14 April 1892 Intelligence has just reached Dingle that on Saturday last the light-keeper on the Tearaght, one of the Blasket Islands, and his son went to collect seabirds eggs from the cliffs. Not having

since returned or no tidings of them received, it is supposed that they both must have fallen from the cliffs and been drowned. [On 12 September 1913 an assistant keeper fell to his death while attempting to catch goats for milking – source: www.irishlights.ie ].

Improvements for Keepers and Their Families Source – www.irishlights.ie

In 1896 the Tearaght lighthouse keepers requested the introduction of a relief system whereby they and their families could be housed ashore and the keepers would return to the lighthouse for limited periods. The Commissioners acceded to the request and the new system was introduced for both the Tearaght and the Skelligs keepers and their families in December that year. They occupied temporary housing on Valentia Island until new houses were provided for them four years later near Knightstown. [The Tearaght Lighthouse became automated in 1988 and the keepers were withdrawn].

Census of the Tearaght 1901 –1911 Source – National Archives of Ireland

There were 3 keepers on the Tearaght Lighthouse. In the 1901 Census they were; James F. Connell (35), Peter Roddy (44) and John Connolly (21). In 1911 the keepers were; Daniel Twohig (44), Edward H. Kennedy (24) and Francis J. Corish (24). West Kerry Live 13

Farming News Louis Murchan BOVINE TB HERD HISTORY RISK STATEMENT AND REPORT TO BE PROVIDED TO FARMERS The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will provide personalised Herd Test History Statements and Reports to cattle farmers in the coming days, to help them to reduce the risk of Bovine TB in their herds. The Bovine TB Forum Interim Report identified the need to provide more effective information to farmers to help them reduce the risk of TB in their herd and advocated for the development of herd risk categories that are “simple, clear, and convey sufficient information to enable farmers to make the decisions appropriate to their situation”. Against this background the Department has developed individualised reports that provide a simplified TB herd risk category for farmers, with herd-specific advice on how to reduce risk of TB. Farmers are already provided with information in relation to their TB risk, but this new report presents this in a very much more user friendly, detailed and practical form. In addition to developing the TB Herd History Risk Statement, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has advanced a number of other recommendations: • It has commissioned an independent review into the On Farm Market Valuation scheme to ensure farmers are receiving accurate market values for reactor animals • It has commissioned an independent Cost Benefit Analysis of the TB Programme to inform the development of a sustainable funding model for the Programme into the future • It has continued to fund independent scientific research into inter species transmission of the disease including the factors influencing local spread

designed to make the application process as user-friendly and accessible as possible for farmers and I urge any farmer who is eligible for a payment to apply without delay. Terms and Conditions and further details on the programme are available at: https://www.agriculture.gov.ie/farmerschemesandpayments/bfp/ Applications must be made online via the Agfood.ie portal and the application window will remain open until 9th September 2020. HACKETT LAUNCHES CALL FOR NEW LOCALLY-LED SCHEME FOR REWETTING OF FARMED PEATLAND Senator Pippa Hackett today launched a call for a new locally-led scheme for rewetting of farmed peatland. It must be asked, how are farmers going to make a living if schemes like this are being pushed, under the Green Party’s agenda, and when are farmers going to be offered proper schemes and funding, such as they were promised. During the government formation, we heard about a new REPS-type scheme that would be much better than the previous REPS, AEOS of GLAS. Since Government formation, we haven’t heard squat. How can people be so blatantly unethical, hoodwinking people with promises they have not intention of keeping. Please, Senator, start again. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938 (B Ag Sc, Dip EIA Mgmt) Agricultural & Environmental Advisor

• It has engaged with the Economic and Social Research Institute to undertake research into behaviours relating to the programme • It has rolled out a number of High Impact TB (HIT) plans in TB problem areas, including Monaghan, Cavan and Clare Furthermore, as part of its on-going commitment towards TB eradication, the Department has sanctioned an additional 16 posts across policy, operations, wildlife and the laboratory services, at an estimated additional annual cost of €1m per annum.

The objective of these measures is to provide farmers with new tools to reduce their own risk, and to target additional Departmental resources at in a way that will have a real impact on the incidence of a disease that results in the imposition of significant cost on every livestock farmer in the country. Following many successful years of reducing bovine TB levels to the benefit of Irish farmers, there has been a concerning incremental increase in the disease since 2016. This has continued in 2020 with further increases in herd incidence and reactor numbers observed. Herd incidence (on a 12-month rolling basis) has breached 4% for the first time since 2012 and reactor numbers have exceeded 20,000 – the highest number since 2009. These trends highlight the need for urgent action to manage the risk more effectively. BEEF FINISHER PAYMENT TO OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS TODAY The Beef Finisher Payment (BFP) opened last week and is a one off scheme under the Covid19 State Aid Temporary Framework with funding totalling €50M. The objective of BFP is to provide support for beef finishing farms in Ireland which have been severely impacted by the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Minister Calleary said that this scheme aims to provide a valuable income support and mitigate the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic for those farmers who finished cattle during the period from 1 February to 12 June 2020. Beef farming is an important economic activity, with a significant multiplier effect in local rural communities, and thus is more important than ever in sustaining these communities. Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland As we come towards the end of Summer 2020, the communities and businesses of the Dingle Peninsula who have worked very hard to make our destination safe, thank all our visitors for their support by choosing the Dingle Peninsula for their ‘staycation’ this year. We sincerely hope that wonderful holiday memories have been created for families and friends and we hope you will come back this autumn / winter or even for your holidays again in 2021! However, as we are still living with Covid-19, we must still manage our social distancing which is challenging at times and we continue to ask everyone to be mindful of our community by practicing safe social distancing, safe coughing etiquette, washing your hands regularly and wearing your face mask indoors and in queues. As we are all learning by now, the public health measures are changing regularly and it is important to keep up to date with them. Also, with continued reduced capacity and space this autumn for pubs serving food, restaurants, cafes, activities, attractions and accommodation, pre-bookings and reservations are still advised in advance to avoid disappointment. Please avoid crowded areas and gatherings in the interests of your safety and well-being and the safety and well-being of our community. We would ask you too to please NOT litter and bring your rubbish home with you – please Leave No Trace.

The Dingle Peninsula Autumn / Winter Open 4 Business brochure is now being updated and will provide information on who will be open this autumn / winter and any special activities or offers that will be introduced. Please contact Sam at dinglept@gmail.com to be included. https:// www.dinglepeninsula.net/open4business/ mobile/index.html

We are sorry to announce that the Dingle Walking Festival will not go ahead this year due to Covid-19 restrictions. Seanchas ón dTrá Bheag, Lios Póil Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh Páidí ‘Fitz’ Mac Gearailt (87) agus Tommy Evans (91) ag comhrá le Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh, 19/7/’20. Dheineas an taifeadadh seo d’Fhís na Féile a shruthaigh Coiste Pobail/Féile Lios Póil ar 1 Lúnasa 2020 ar www.liospoil.com. Baineann an tríú mír sheanchais leis an dTrá Bheag chomh maith, Seán Ó Súilleabháin (múinteoir Pháidí) a bhailigh ón Dhaid ceithre scór bliain ó shin, geall leis. 1.

him to come down into the tide, and faith, he realized what was going on, and he with his horse and car, he didn’t get out of the car, and he didn’t follow the beautiful mermaid, but he put his hand in his pocket and he took out his penknife, and he stuck it her, and she vanished. Anyway, he went home. Next day he took out his pipe to have a smoke – his pipe was empty. He got his half quarter of tobacco, and his penknife – but there was no penknife in the pocket, and he remembered what he was after doing with it, and he came straight down to the Áthán Buí to see if his penknife would be anywhere, and there it was stuck in a big frog, and he got his penknife back. Sin é an scéal – sin é mar a dúirt an múinteoir Seán Ó Súilleabháin linn é ar scoil, agus má tá bréag ann bíodh, mar, ní mise a chum ná a cheap é, ’sé Seán Ó Súilleabháin a cheap é!

T: Well, I saw – that was most unusual, I didn’t see it before then, and I didn’t see it since, but then again I don’t be there too often – back at The Carraig at the mouth of the Short Strand, at turn of tide, there was a flood in the river first of all, and they were waiting for the spring tide to turn up – salmon – fine big salmon jumping all over the place, waiting to move up with the tide. I have never seen a shoal of salmon – they were there by the hundreds, I’m not adding to it, they were there by the hundreds, God only knows how many were there. And the minute the tide started to turn, you could see them moving up along the shore – one way passage for a lot of them, I’d say! R: Agus ar deireadh, tá seanará agat dúinn. T: ‘Tóg nuair a gheobhair, mar b’fhéidir, nuair a loirgeoir ní bhfaighir.’

R: Ardfhear, gura míle míle maith agat, a Pháidí.

R: Gura maith agatsa as an méid atá tugtha agat dúinn, agus táimid ana- bhuíoch díot.

2.

T: Fáilte romhat! *Féach Pádraig Ó Siochfradha, P., Triocha-Céad Chorca Dhuibhne (Baile Átha Cliath 1939), lch. 155: ‘An tÁthán Buidhe. Cuid den bhóthar iseadh é fé bhun tighthe An Tobair. Éirigheann taoidí rabharta go hard ós cionn an bhóthair ann.’ I gcomhrá le Breandán Ó Cíobháin i dtaobh an datha atá luaite leis an logainm úd, dar leis, gur minic go mbaineann an dath a áirítear le logainm le cáilíocht fé leith nó le tabhairt fé ndeara ag am nó tráth áirithe a thugann bonn don ndath, sa chás seo ‘buí’ a dh’éireodh, b’fhéidir, as sní an iarainn in uiscí an phortaigh a d’fhágfadh scáil bhuí ar chlocha ghrinneall an átha.

Páidí 'Fitz' Mac Gearailt Grianghraf le Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh Roibeard: Fáilte go ‘Fís na Féile 2020’. Táimid anso cois Trá Bige agus faram tá beirt sheanchara, Páidí ‘Fitz’ Mac Gearailt ón nDroichead ó dhúchas agus Tommy Evans ón dTobar, agus táimid chun mírín scéalaíochta a thabhairt daoibh anois. Tosnóimid leatsa, a Pháidí – conas tánn tú? Páidí: Go maith, buíochas le Dia. R: Is maith san. Anois, tá seanará agatsa a bhaineann leis an dtráigh a mhúin an múinteoir daoibh, abair leat. P: Seán Ó Súilleabháin, fadó fadó riamh. Deireadh sé linn go raibh an Trá Bheag anso: ‘Bíonn trá na ndomhan tuilte nuair a bhíonn tráigh na bhfaoileann tráite,’ sin é dúirt sé linn. R: Tá san ráite go deas – agus mar bharr air sin, tá scéal púcaí agat a bhaineas leis an dtráigh anso, a d’inis sé daoibh. P: (Gáirí) Tá ceann agam mar gheall ar an Áthán Buí* – bhí fear ón dTobar nó Cinn Aird sa mhargadh sa Daingean agus bhí taoscán ólta aige during an lá, agus nuair a bhí sé ag teacht abhaile tháinig sé go dtí’n Áthán Buí – the Áthán Buí anso down at the bottom of Tobar Village, and, at that time the tide used to come into the road – since then the Council raised the road and the high tide don’t come in there any more, but at that time they’d be a couple of foot of water on the road. But when he came to the Áthán Buí there was a mermaid in from the sea coaxing 18 West Kerry Live

'Ghaibheas Aniar Barra Poill a’ Bháid ...' Rí na Trá Bige! Tommy Evans Grianghraf le Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh Roibeard: Anois, a Tommy, conas tánn tú inniu? Tommy: Ara, ag strácáil, táimid a déanamh maith go leor, buíochas mór le Dia. R: Ar dtúis, cad is aois duit, a Tommy? T: Naocha h-aon, agus cúpla mí leis. R: Well, in those ninety odd years you must have seen many iontas down here in the Trá Bheag, can you recall one or two of them, led thoil. T: Well, I remember this happened in 1942, the biggest gale and high tide I ever saw, I think it was around 1942 or three, there was a spring tide and a gale to the back of it, it did a lot of damage, knocked fences and everything, and it put barra taoide up on tha Áthán Buí that Paudie was telling you about, and in the barra taoide was dead fish – battered off the rocks. I’ve never seen it since, there was a line of fish up on the fence by the Council workers when they were clearing the place. R: And to finish, one other iontas that you saw.

Mír sheanchais a d'eachtraigh Pádraig Ó Súilleabháin (81), Cinn Aird dá mhac Seán Ó Súilleabháin, O.S., 22/8/1941 Pádraig: Ghaibheas aniar barra Poill a’ Bháid lá samhraidh agus chonac amuigh sa loig [hollow] in aice na Srúlach an breac agus a bholg le gréin aige – chomh geal le sneachta, agus gan thar troigh uisce san áit. Chaitheas díom mo bhróga agus ní fada bhíos ar a thí agus d’éalaíos amach. Bhíos ag cuimhneamh go m’fhéidir go raibh sé marbh. Nuair a thánga os a chionn, chonac a sceolbhach ag oscailt agus ag iamh. Chuireas an dá láimh greamaithe ann – lámh thiar ar chaol a eireabaill agus an lámh eile amuigh aigena cheann agus d’fháisceas i gcoinne an talaimh é. Bhíos ag ionfairt is ag aistriú na méireanna amach go bhfuaireas an sceolmhach aige. Ní raibh aon bhaol orm ansan, agus thugas liom den iarracht san é. Bhí cuid mhaith cairteacha gainimhe (LS gainmhí ) ar an eitir [submerged sandbank] agus d’fheicfeá an t-ionadh a bhí orthu – fámaire de bhas gheal a bhí trí troithe ar fhaid. dinners (i.e. stews, curries, pasta etc.) viable options. Packaging & Palatability- Adults, not to mind children, are unlikely to eat lunches of soggy sandwiches and squashed bruised fruit or drink warm milk, so investing in a reusable lunchbox and drinks bottle which will protect food and keep beverages hot/cold is a good idea. This has the added bonus of reducing the need for unnecessary packaging (i.e. cling film, tinfoil, plastic bottles and cartons). This does not mean that you need to spend a fortune on ‘ecofriendly’ or fancy bento style lunchboxes (which are a pain to wash anyway). If it is reusable and strong enough to last longterm it will contribute to the circular economy. Using butter tubs, yogurt cartons etc. to pack food or to compartmentalise it in a larger lunchbox is also a good sustainable option as you are reusing otherwise single use packaging and cutting down on the need for surplus Tupperware. Websites such as stopfoodwaste.ie offer advice on some clever hacks to ensure more palatable lunches i.e. freeze dairy products like yogurts (which also prolongs their shelf-life) and they will be defrosted but still cold for lunch time in school; make sure to separate cheese from crackers so that the crackers do not absorb moisture from the cheese and make them soggy. €25 €35 Apply their knowledge - Do not underestimate your child’s knowledge €30 and understanding of environmental issues like climate change and €40 €14 waste of resources. Cromane News Jane Casey Cromane GAA MID KERRY: Well done to the Mid Kerry senior football team that beat Kilcummin 3-15 to 0-12 in the County SFC at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney, on Saturday. Cromane were represented by Kieran O’Sullivan, who was making his County SFC debut at corner-back. Kieran was very solid and played beyond his years as he is still just 18. Darren Houlihan was also on the Mid Kerry panel. SENIOR DRAWS: The Cromane seniors have been drawn to play Keel in the Mid Kerry SFC quarter-final. The winner of this game will take on Beaufort or Glenbeigh-Glencar in the semi-final. Meanwhile, the Cromane senior team will also take part in this year’s Novice Football Championship. Cromane were paired with Valentia in the quarter-finals. That game, at a date to be decided, will be played in Cromane. UNDER-16s: County League result: GGC 0-9, Milltown-Castlemaine 5-18 The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) under-16s never got going last Monday week in their third game in phase one of the county league. After a positive performance in their previous outing when defeating Beaufort in Cromane, it was a disappointing performance. The key though for these players is that they bounce back in phase two and find more consistency. The highlights included some fine points from play from Jason O’Connor and some excellent shot-stopping from goalkeeper Jamie Casey. This was their final game in phase one of the county league. Phase two of the Under-16 County League is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 30.

Sub: Jamie O’Sullivan. UNDER-14s: The GGC under-14s are preparing for phase two of the county league. Their first game against Fossa was postponed due to the new guidelines imposed last week. The other teams in their division are Dingle and Templenoe/SneemDerrynane (who they play at home on Wednesday, September 2). The Fossa game will have to be rescheduled. UNDER-12s: In phase two of the Under-12 County League Cromane are in a division with St Michael’s (Ballinskelligs), Tuosist, Valentia, and Skellig Rangers. These four games are in addition to the three Cromane played in phase one against Glenbeigh-Glencar, Laune Rangers B, and Legion B. Cromane won their first game in phase two a fortnight ago against St Michael’s (Ballinskelligs). Their next game is this Sunday (August 30) away to Tuosist, at 1pm. JUNIORS: The Cromane B team is taking part in the County Junior League. They were defeated by Fossa in Cromane in their first game a fortnight ago. These games are invaluable for players who have not received game time in the junior championship as well as those players on the comeback trail. After ten years on the road, Dingle band Walking On Cars have come to the end of their musical journey. On Friday the quartet released a statement confirming that they are going their seperate ways. Through raw talent and tireless dedication, the band built up a large and loyal following over the years and cemented their credentials with thrilling live performances. Their decade long career as a band saw them enjoy chart success, fame and critical acclaim. And they deserved every bit of it. They soared high but kept their feet on the ground, touring all over the world and always returning to West Kerry. In their statement the band were particularily appreciative of their fans and assured them that they are all individually working on their their own projects. As a parting gift they released one final EP; "Clouds". We thank them for ten years of music and wish them well in their future endeavours. Go n-eirí libh.

The Flu Vaccine For Children Brid O'Sullivan The shortening evenings signal the imminence of the flu vaccine 'season' to all of us healthcare professionals. This year the flu vaccine (also known as influenza vaccine) has been extended to all children, free of charge, between the ages of 2 years to 12 years regardless of health status. To date the flu vaccine is offered to all those with chronic health conditions for example diabetes, cardiac issues, imunosuppression due to disease or treatment (including treatment for cancer) etc. from the age of 6 months and to all adults aged over 65 years. Target groups: •

Children aged 2 years to 12 years

6 months old to 64 yrs with underlying health conditions e.g. cancer, heart conditions etc

Adults aged over 65 years

• Pregnancy •

People with Down syndrome

Health Care Workers (HCW)

• Carers •

Household contacts of people at risk

People at close contact with poultry and pigs

In a nutshell, the flu causes death and hospitalisation every year and the vaccine offers the best protection against getting the flu for at risk groups. You need to get the flu vaccine every year ; the virus changes, therefore so too does the vaccine. The vaccine contains killed viruses - it cannot give you the flu. The rationale for vaccinating children in Ireland •

10% of children under 15 years attend the GP with influenza in an average season.

Highest incidence is in youger children, with under 5 years having high risk complications, including hospitalisation with high rates of admission to critical care units in children especially in children under 5 years.

The vaccine has been received by millions of children globally including the US, Canada, the UK and Finland. A pilot study in 2014-2015 saw a 94% drop in GP consultations for influenza-like illnesses in primary school children and a drop of 74% in A + E attendence in primary school children with respiratory issues. In adults, a 59% drop in consultations with influenza-like illnesses was seen.

paracetamol/neurofen and is usually resolved within 24-72 hours. As with any medication/vaccination there is a risk of anaphylaxis, but it is very rare ( 1 in every 10,000). Your nurse or doctor will not give you the vaccine if you are known to have this risk and you will be monitered post vaccination for severe allergic reaction which usually occurs within seconds to minutes of receiving the vaccine. In conclusion, if you have never had the flu, that does not mean you are immune. If you fall within the target groups for vaccination, getting the vaccine is the surest route you have to ensuring that you do not get the flu this year. Personally, the most common side effect I have seen and experienced myself post flu vaccination is a sore arm for a few hours....to me that is much preferable to actually getting the flu! I will be first in line this September with my children to get vaccinated, who else is with me? Over the last 10 years in the Irish healthcare system, over 11,000 confirmed cases of flu were children, over 4,750 of which were hospitalised and 183 were admitted to critical care. There were 41 deaths (figures courtesy of Health Protection Surveillance Centre). This year sees two forms of flu vaccine - the LAIV (Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine) being administered to children aged 2-12 years and the QIV (Quadricalent Inactivated Influenza Vaccine) to at-risk children aged over 6 months to 23 mths and aged 13 years and over and to those childrem whereby receiving a 'live' vaccine such as LAIV is contraindicated (eg those who are immunosuppressed, on aspirin, severe asthmatics). The LAIV is given through the nose, NO INJECTION. The QIV is an injection, given to smaller children in the thigh, to older children commonly in the upper arm. The LAIV which is a more effectice vaccine - 83%efficacy against confirmed influenza disease and also may protect against other strains not contained within the vaccine, is not licenced to give to children under 2 years old as it can cause wheezing. The QIV can be given to children aged under 2 whose health is compromised and in children who should not receive 'live' vaccines (as above). While the QIV is not as effective, it is hoped that vaccinating all children will provide 'herd' immunity for all. 'Live' vaccines can generate an immunoresponse in the body - a weakened strain of the vaccine is given which can cause mild systoms of flu or heavy cold i.e. mild fever (< 39c), nasal congestion, runny nose, tiredness and decreased apepitete are the most common symptoms. This can be treated with over the counter

Camp Notes Brigid O'Connor WELCOME - FÁILTE A warm welcome is extended to Fr. John O Donoghue ( Missionaries of Africa ) and Fr. Donal O Connor (Chaplain IT Tralee) who will be ministering in the Parish of Annascaul, Camp and Inch until Christmas. Fr. Michael Moynihan PP Dingle Parish is appointed Administrator to the Parish. LADIES FOOTBALL Annascaul girls travelled to John Mitchell's on Tuesday, 11th of August and hit the ground running on a glorious summer's evening for football. With joint captains Grace Kennedy and Ciara Casey dominating midfield, Keelin Clifford had 3 points in the first 12 minutes and Ciara chipped in with two to fire the girls 5pts in front. Lauren Crean, Ciara Slattery and Caoimhe O'Callaghan were in an unforgiving mood and cut out Mitchel's supply time and time again. The score of the game was a ball fielded i lár na páirce by young Niamh O'Callaghan, who slipped it to Ciara Casey on the run. It went on at pace through the roadrunner Grace, a neat pass to Molly McCarthy who picked out Keelin and Camp's version of Gooch clipped over for a great team score. Shortly afterwards Caoimhe cleverly intercepted and the ball was flashed over the bar by Sinead Murphy. Sinead worked really hard forcing a turnover and fed the industrious Molly who raised the green flag much to the delight of the Annascaul supporters!! Aoibheann O'Dwyer was now in the thick of things working hard and helped create points for Keelin and Grace to leave us in control at half time. The Mitchell's came out all guns blazing in the second half and goaled straight away to signal their intents. A magnificent finger tip save by keeper Niamh Hanifin along with stout defending by Aine Curran, Orla Curran and Caoimhe Curran (definitely not sisters but gritty backs one can be assured). The introduction of fresh legs by our younger girls Alannah Griffin, Lily Falvey, Lia Sheehy and Aoibhinn O Callaghan saw Lily tee up Lia to raise a badly needed white flag. Mitchells were now coming at Annascaul hard and raised two green flags as managers Paddy Curran & Ger O'Callaghan heart rates were soaring for all the wrong reasons. Aoibhinn the pocket rocket took off after Alannah fed her, fired for goal and despite the block managed to toe poke it home to lift the seige. But once more Mitchels drove forward to bang in another goal but finally the ref blew up as Annascaul won by two, much to the relief of all. Final score John Mitchell's 4-2 Annascaul 2-10. Team: Niamh Hannifin,Lauren Crean,Orla Curran. Aine Curran,Ciara Slattery,Caoimhe O Callaghan. Grace Kennedy & Ciara Casey. Molly McCarthy,Aoibheann O Dwyer,Niamh O Callaghan. Keelin Clifford ,Sinead Murphy. Subs: Alannah Griffin,Lily Falvey,Caoimhe Curran,Lia Sheehy and Aoibhinn O Callaghan. Many thanks to John Mitchels for a cracking game of football, referee Sharon Roche and our own Mairead Clifford for all her behind the scenes work! U12 MATCH REPORT ANNASCAUL V CHURCHILL: Annascaul U-12 girls hosted Churchill on Tuesday 18th of August. This was a ding dong affair with both defenses well on top and in a strangely low scoring game Churchill deservedly won by 4pts. Annascaul started brightly and the Churchill

goalkeeper made two great saves from Sinead Murphy and the electric Molly McCarthy. At the other side of the field, our halfback line of Aine Curran, Ciara Slattery and Niamh O'Callaghan went expertly about cutting off the Churchill supply lines. Niamh Hanifin with a pin point kickout, picked out the excellent Miriam Sheehan who delightfully placed Sinead Murphy and she made no mistake to raise a green flag. Churchill's two powerful midfielders were causing problems but Ciara Casey and Grace Kennedy worked hard to limit them and Churchill's running game. The second half saw Churchill tag on points but an excellent long range free from Ciara Casey saw the game tied. At this stage, try as hard as they would, our forwards Keelin, Aoibheann O C, Eimear and Lauren Foley just couldn't get the scoreboard ticking over. Our keeper Niamh pulled off a great save, Lauren Crean and Orla Curran in the fullback line were brilliant in repelling Churchill attacks and got great support from the fresh legs of Caoimhe, Aoibheann O Dwyer and Alanna. However, Churchill goaled and tagged on a point and despite Annascaul trying hard to the bitter end, we couldn't reel in Churchill. The Annascaul girls showed great heart and a never say die attitude which will only stand to them in future games. Better days lie ahead for this young bunch of girls one has no doubt. Team and Panel: Niamh Hanifin, Orla Curran, Lauren Crean, Aine Curran, Ciara Slattery, Niamh O'Callaghan, Ciara Casey, Grace Kennedy Molly Mc Carthy, Miriam Sheehan, Aoibhinn O'Callaghan, Keelin Clifford, Sinead Murphy. Subs: Caoimhe O'Callaghan, Aoibheann O'Dwyer, Eimear O'Connor, Lauren Foley, Alannah Griffin, Lily Falvey, Lia Sheehy, Caoimhe Curran, Tara Laide, Jenna Crean, Aoife Kennedy, Amy Kennedy, Roisin O Driscoll and Aisling Clifford. A great example of family fun together in the great outdoors ! OBITUARY The Death of Michael Spillane, Spillanes Bar, Fahamore, The Maharees occurred on Wednesday last. Mike was a true entrepreneur, a pioneer in his own right whose renowned family Seafood Restaurant has received many awards and accolades in recognition of excellent cuisine in the tourism industry locally and nationally. Predeceased by sisters-in-law Mary and Judy, brother-in-law Dave. Sadly missed by his loving wife, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, son-inlaw, Rob, daughter-in-law, Annette, his three grandchildren, Yani, Hannah and Timmy, brothersin-law, Rob, Tom and Ed, sisters-in-law, Lori, Carol, Gert, his kids partners, Kirsty and Kenneth, his nephews, nieces, relatives, golf buddies and other friends and family in Canada and around the world. Mike will also be celebrated and missed by his

many staff and customers both past and present at Spillanes Bar in the Maharees. A true legend, loved by all who met him. Rest In Peace. CASTLE PATTERN Saturday 15th August was Castle Pattern Day. Down the centuries people came to the village from all over the Peninsula to celebrate and to pray on the feastday of the Blessed Virgin, the patron saint of the parish. The day was known as Lá le Mhuire na Duimhche (The Day of Our Lady of the Warren. The Mutton Pie was the staple diet in a tasty soup (Castle recipe) and lashed down with a pint or a cup of tea as desired. On Saturday last the pies were enjoyed in the village restaurants in Castlegregory and in many homes around the village in keeping with tradition. Ocean View Nursing Home, Camp served up the mutton pies too made by Maura from Castle and with a few tips from the residents, I heard they were delicious as always. So now we'll have to wait 'til September for our next Mutton Pie around Camp Fair, 18th September and the Camp ladies will not be found wanting when it comes down to making the Camp Mutton Pie, there is a difference, they tell us and of course again always very appetising, so the best of healthy eating to you all and stay safe in the future ! CAMP YOUTH CLUB Unfortunately due to Covid regulations, the Youth Club is not in a position to open to members at the moment. ROSE OF TRALEE Every year the visit of the Roses to Ocean View Nursing Home in Camp in August is a highlight for the residents. To avoid disappointment this year Kay O'Shea Events Coordinator thought up a new and very novel idea and despite the 60th Rose of Tralee being cancelled, Kay decided to organise a Rose Celebration in Ocean View for the residents. And Kay even got found a Rose too amongst the residents. Ina Trant was delighted to be Ocean Views, Rose of Tralee 2020 and Florists came out specially to present her with a Rose Bouquet. Everybody had great fun and all agreed that it was a memorable and enjoyable afternoon for everybody. And they got local and National media coverage too ! Congratulatons Ina and well done Kay and all in Ocean View ! BALLINCLARE AMBUSH The Ballinclare Ambush and the shooting of Paddy Kennedy, R.I.P. - In August 1920, at the height of the War of Independence, an ambush took place at Ballinclare near Annascaul. A British army lorry was destroyed and the soldiers on board taken prisoner. Although they were subsequently released, having been given tea, cake and cigarettes at a nearby farmhouse, reprisals by the Black and Tans saw local man, Paddy Kennedy, shot dead. Tim & Mary Kennedy and their family along with members of Annascaul Historical Society, Mary Ward, Justin McCarthy, Michael Kennedy and John Hartnett marked this historical event in Annascaul on Tuesday 18th August, the Centenary of this historic, monumental and sad event in the history of the locality. Grand Nephew of Paddy Kennedy, Paddy Hartnett, Annascaul Historical Society says the Society intend to erect a monument in The Tom Crean Garden in the village in memory of all the volunteers who died in The War of Independence. Councillor Breandán Mac Gearailt MCC who attended on Tuesday has committeed to seeking funding from Kerry Co. Council towards the monument.

Here's some info about Language Planning nationally. Generally, every area has 7 years to implement their plan. For the most part, the areas are the Gaeltachtaí which are Limistéir Phleanála Teanga (Language Planning Regions) with an Oifigeach Pleanála Teanga employed to enact the plan. Tá áiteanna eile ina Bhailte Seirbhíse Gaeltachta agus ina Líonraí Gaeilge. Samplaí des na Bailte ná Daingean Uí Chúis, Trá Lí, Cathair Saidhbhín agus Dún Garbháin. Is Lionra Gaeilge a bheidh in Inis, Co. an Chláir, mar shampla. Other places can be Gaeltacht Service Towns (Daingean Uí Chúis, Trá Lí, Cathair Saidhbhín, Dún Garbháin) or Irish Language Neworks (Ennis in Clare). Bíonn daoine eile fostaithe sna ceantair Ghaeltachta eile gan dabht. Anois i gCúige Mumhan tá Victor Bayda in Uíbh Ráthach, tá Liadh Ní Riada i nGaeltacht Mhúscraí agus tá Conor McGuinness ceaptha i nGaeltacht na nDéise. Bíonn Tobar Dhuibhne ag comhoibriú leis na hOifigigh eile agus guímid gach rath ar na haon phlean go dtiocfaidh borradh fén dteanga timpeall na tíre. In the other Gaeltacht areas different Language Planners are employed. Now in Munster we have Victor Bayda in Uíbh Ráthach, Liadh Ní Riada in Múscraí and Conor McGuinness newly appointed in the Déise Gaeltacht. Tobar Dhuibhne wish every area all the best.

Deirdre de Bhailís

Stay safe and well everyone.

This year has brought so many changes to the way we live and work and we’ve seen this very clearly over the summer months through the different people who have used the services of the Dingle Hub. Many of you have worked here for an extended time this summer, some of you are considering making a more permanent move, some have already taken the plunge. Now, more than ever, it is so important to continue to build a strong community for remote workers on the Dingle Peninsula; this will ensure we have those chats over coffee (virtual for now) to identify mutually beneficial opportunities that can only come from networking and connecting.

Contact: Deirdre de Bhailís, Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub

Have you recently started working from here?

Are you considering a part-time or permanent move to the Dingle Peninsula?

Are you self-employed, remote working or a start-up business?

Perhaps you are in a position within your business to bring remote working opportunities with you and build a team from here?

Ar thosnaís ag obair ó Chorca Dhuibhne le déanaí?

An bhfuil tú ag smaoineamh faoi bhogadh go Chorca Dhuibhne go páirtaimseartha nó go lánaimseartha?

An bhfuil tú féinfhostaithe, cianoibrithe nó an bhfuil comhlacht nua á bhunú agat?

B’fhéidir go bhfuil deis agat postanna nua a chur ar fáil a bheadh lonnaithe i gCorca Dhuibhne agus foireanna a bhunú anseo?

Ba bhreá linn cloisint uait! Déan teagmháil linn ar info@dinglehub.com agus cabhraigh linn pobal agus líonra spleodrach, éagsúil, fuinniúil a chruthú. Ní gá le deasc nó oifig fisiciúil sa Hub a bheith agat chun a bheith mar pháirt den phobal i gcoitinne. Ba bhreá linn chomh maith más maith leat nasc a dhéanamh linn/Dingle Hub a leanúint ar na meáin shóisialta Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook - Roinnimid eolas faoi imeachtaí, deiseanna agus smaointe ann, agus mar thoradh feiceann tú an pictiúr ginearálta faoi na réimse leathan tograí atá fé bhun againn agus na líonraí a bhfuilimid nascaithe leo. The Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub is a Community Enterprise supported by Enterprise Ireland, the Dept of Rural and Community Development through the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, eir, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Kerry Co Co and the Dingle Chamber Alliance.

We want to hear from you!! Please connect with us at info@dinglehub. com and help us build a vibrant, diverse and dynamic community and network. It’s not necessary to need a physical desk or office space in the hub to be part of this wider community. We’d also love you to connect with us on social media platforms - Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook as we share upcoming events, opportunities and ideas there, so it’s a good place to get an idea of the wide range of projects and networks we’re connected with. I mbliana tá athrú mór tagtha ar an tslí a mhairimid agus a n-oibróimid; tá sé sin feicthe againn go soiléir i rith an tsamhraidh agus ó na daoine difriúla atá ag baint úsáid as an Dingle Hub. Bhain roinnt mhaith agaibh úsáid as an spás anseo do thréimhsí bhreisithe ama i rith an tsamhraidh; tá roinnt agaibh ag smaoineamh faoi bhogadh anseo/ar ais anseo go Chorca Dhuibhne go buan, tá an céim sin déanta ag roinnt eile agaibh cheana. Tá sé níos tábhachtaí ná riamh leanúint ar aghaidh pobal/líonra láidir a chruthú do chianoibrithe lonnaithe i gCorca Dhuibhne; cinnteoidh sé seo go mbeidh caifé agus comhráite againn (ar Zoom go fóill ar feadh tamaill eile) chun deiseanna a aithint a théann chun tairbhe do dhaoine éagsúla; tagann deiseanna mar sin chun solais ach amháin/den chuid is mó trí líonraí agus nascanna a dhéanamh.

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Is diail an fear é Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh. Cé a déarfadh go raibh laoch Dhún Sian naocha bliain. Dá mbeadh an lá breá bheadh gaisce éigin deanta aige. Cómhgháirdeachas a Mhichíl, gura fada buan tú. Laoch eile. Níl aon teora le Katie Taylor. Is mó cath buaite aici . T'ás agam go bhfuil na mílter Eireannach i gcéin a bhíonn ag feachaint ar ghaiscí Khatie. Is dócha gur í an Laoch spóirt is mó a bhí riamh againn. Cad é an méid bua a thug sí lei go slachtmhar. Vioras Tá scata bád poilitiúil curtha go tóin poill sa tír seo mar go ndearna daoine gur chóir go mbeadh ciall acu gliogairí a dheanamh dóibh féin. Ís mór an trua iad ach siad féin fé ndeara é. Mura dtugann ionadaithe an phobail aire dóibh féin conas a mheasaid a bheidh ag an bpobal. Is mór an trua fear Mhaigh Eó ná raibh ach ceapaithe le tamall beag. Nfheadar an ag Éamon ó Cuiv a bheidh a phost anois. Ní ró-shásta leis an dTaoiseach atá an fear cumasach dlí Jim O’Callaghan ach oiread. Tá brú mór ar Phil Hogan chomh maith. Toisc gur ionadaí FG Ó hÓgáin bhí an Tánáiste ag éirí thiar as. Mo thuairim tóisc go bhfuil oiread i gceist ba ceart scaoileadh le Ó hÓgain. Tá obair mhór ag teacht chuige- lig dó. Gaoth Bhí lucht tuar na haimsire á fhógairt go mbeadh gála fórsa 10 againn ach níor tháinigh an Ghaoth mhór, go dtín leithinis s’againne ach go háirithe. Bhí an scéal céanna ag an mBBC. Dúirt fear liom roimh an nGaoth Mhór ná beadh an aimsir olc anseo, is ar a uaireadóir a fuair sé an t-eolas. Sin scéal suimiúil. Bead ag cur na ceiste air anois conas a bheidh againn an chéad uair eile go dtuarfar gála ‘Ní raibh sé mícheart go dtí seo’, ar sé. Is baolach go mbeidh gála na seachtaine pé mór nó beag, imithe nuair a beithfear á léamh seo, nó an mbeidh an ghaoth imithe? Measaimse go mbeidh gála mór againn, ach ní aon údar aimsire mise. Tá beagán don eagla orm go mbeam thíos leis an nGaoth Mhór. Abair paidir ag moladh do Dhia an anaithe sin a choimeád uainn. Ceartú. Níor imir sínsir caide na Gaeltachta an chluiche leis na Gaeil fós sa chomórtas idirmheánach an chontae. Droch aimsir agus ar mhaithe le cluichí sínsir is cúis leis. Ní chás a rá go mbeidh sé ‘fuar’ acu go léir.aon rian don ádh ar an chaint seo
