Take a Deep Breath, Keep Calm and Carry on Cooking! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

There has been no let up this week on the ongoing Covid-19 crisis and with rising numbers and new restrictions, we are surely in for a long Winter of discontent. It is understandable to feel powerless as NPHET and the Government decide our fate and equally, it is fair enough to be envious of the many animals heading into a long hibernation, getting away from it all! On a brighter note, we have been blessed with dramatic sunsets, clear night skies and plethora of activity in Nature that reminds us of who really is in charge. Despite all ups and downs lately, the Seasons remain fairly consistent as far as Mother Nature is concerned. In Autumn, Earth energy begins its journey downwards, shifting from the high of Summer to the low of Winter. In between, we really experience two seasons, Late Summer and Autumn, but our modern calendars say otherwise. With each of the five seasons, different organ systems are nourished through the food in season, the weather outside, our natural environment and our innate ability to go with the flow. It is widely accepted in Traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine that to truly attune with the seasons is the best prevention of disease, discord and disharmony! Earth energy moves along in a cyclical manner throughout the year and as it flows through us during Autumn it nourishes and tonifies our Lungs. Coronavirus has put the spotlight on the lungs and respiratory tract, so listen up because you will not hear this on the nine o’clock news! Right now is the best time to give those airbags some TLC, they work hard, taking up to 25,000 breaths a day! Even before Covid 19, for many Irish people lung health has been a struggle. We have the 4th highest prevalence of Asthma in the World with almost one in ten people suffering from this chronic condition. We are also rank high for lung cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Throw into the mix bronchitis, pneumonia, chest infections and seasonal allergies and it becomes very apparent that our lungs are besieged in the best of times and in desperate need of help! The foods in season during Autumn nourish the Lungs and their related organs - the eyes and large intestine. Betacarotene-rich foods such as carrots, butternut squash and pumpkin are at their best now. The orange pigment of these vegetables is due to betacarotene, a flavonoid most beneficial to the linings of the intestines, nose, the airways and lungs, offering strength and support to their integrity and also an important nutrient to eye health. Supporting these organs now, will offer greater resistance to the bugs and viruses typically associated with this time of year – tummy bugs, flus, colds and chest ailments, and more than likely, the Coronavirus too.

associated allergies and 16% reduced risk in asthma when compared to those with the lowest levels of folic acid. Black beans and lentils provide the highest dietary levels of folic acid, with dark green vegetables (chard, spinach, romaine lettuce, kale, Brussels sprouts, broccoli) a very close second. Other great foods for the lungs, and indeed the eyes and large intestine include all dark green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables and dark-skinned fruits – all of which make a perfect meal for Autumn days! Foods such as milk, eggs and salt are generally off the menu for those with lung health issues. Milk and egg allergies are common triggers among asthma sufferers. Salt encourages fluid retention which can make breathing more difficult. Use a little sea salt in cooking if needed but avoid adding salt to meals at the table as well as restricting salty foods and processed foods. Interestingly, salt therapy (breath work) and saline rinsing of the nose have shown excellent benefits to lung and respiratory health and is probably the best route for salt for those with respiratory disorders. Breathing techniques such as Buteyko improve the outcome of many respiratory diseases and warrant inclusion in the overall management of lung disease. To escape for a moment, put these Autumn foods on your shopping list. A good recipe book or online resources will provide plenty ideas to get them onto your plate. Aim for two or three varieties every day! Breathe in the aroma of the slow-cooking spices and herbs and let yourself drift away from the news and a little closer to Mother Nature! Flavours associated with Autumn are pungent - bay leaves, capers, caraway seeds, cardamom, chives, cinnamon, cloves, cumquats, dill, fennel, leek, oregano, nutmeg, rosemary, thyme, turmeric, watercress, wheat germ, cabbage, turnip, ginger, horseradish, pepper, onions, garlic and chillies. These foods have a drying effect, complementing the season and helping to reduce dampness in the body which is a precursor to most respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Of course, it is not a surprise that these flavours also pair well with the foods of the season and prepares us for the heartier cooking of the Winter months. Hearty beans, seeds and nuts added to slow-cooked meals provide omega 3, magnesium and B vitamins. Omega 3 (in oily fish, nuts and seeds) is wellknown for its anti-inflammatory properties and renowned for joint and heart health. It also helps to reduce allergy mechanisms which trigger asthma and improves linings of the eyes, respiratory tract and the digestive tract. Magnesium is particularly beneficial to lungs as it helps to dilate airways and relax the muscles around the bronchi thus reducing spasms associated with Asthma. Researchers found a significant association between people with higher blood levels of folic acid and a 30% reduced risk in inflammatory markers, a 40% reduced risk in wheezing, a 31% reduced risk of having

Loch Croite i bParóiste an Chlocháin Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh Beannachtaí geala chugat, a léitheoir, agus súil agam go bhfuilir slán sláintiúil i ré seo an amhrais. Ar an gcéad ásc, ní mór dom a lua gur spreagadh nach beag dom dearbhú uaibh go bhfuil m’ailt á léamh is ábhar plé ag éirí astu. Comhairle ó léitheoir feasach amháin go mbíonn cuid dem abairtí rófhada, agus an ceart aige! Thugabhair an foclóir lem alt deiridh fé ndeara, é ann ar iarratas ó roinnt agaibh a deir liom gur dúshlán nach beag daoibh cuid den dtéarmaíocht im ailt. Tá súil agam go mba chúnamh daoibh a leithéid, is beidh mar nós agam feasta. Sea, bhí de phríbhléid agam iarnóin draíochtúil a chaitheamh i nGleann Seanachoirp ar an Leitriúch lem dheartháir Míchéal, le linn dúinn turas a thabhairt ar Loch Croite le déanaí. “Loch Croichte”1 atá ag an Seabhac air, suite “go hard suas ar chliathán an chnuic (Bréanainn) fé bhun na háirdleacan” dar leis. B’fhada im cheann gur mhaith liom taiscéal a dhéanamh ar abhantrach an locha úd. Comhthéacs Bhí m’aintín Eily (deirfiúr lem Dhaid ‘Bill Casey’ a mhúin ar feadh na mblianta i mBunscoil Bhaile Uí Dhuinn, Clochán) pósta le Jack O’Dowd ‘Jack Dowd’ mangaire éisc ó Chlochán Bréanainn, agus iad lonnaithe go cluthair i dtigh scópúil cois faille le radharc ar an gCé i mBréanainn acu. Ba nós lenár gclann turas a thabhairt ar an ngaolta láistíos de chnoc gach samhradh, agus ba lá dár saol gan dabht Domhnach na nDowd’s i mBréanainn. N’fheadar éinne na sceitimíní a bhíodh orainn ag réiteach dár sciuird Domhnaigh thar Chonair anuas go Bá Bhréanainn. Ál na gCathasach ag taisteal i VW uaithne ZX 1566, agus an t-ál céanna ag bláthú thar na mblianta go dtí go raibh dáréag againn ann fé dheireadh na seascaidí. D’fhág san sinn fáiscthe isteach sa bheetle beag idir thosach is chúl is urrann os cionn an innill i gcúl na cairte. Níorbh olc san, ach chomh cinnte is atá cros ar asal, ní túisce Mullach Conrach curtha dinn againn agus sinn ag sní le fánaigh, ná go mbuaileadh babhta urlacain Mícheál, an triú duine clainne. N’fheadar ná gur sceimhle roimis na bhfailltreacha silteacha a bhí ag tumadh os gach cor is cúinne ar an gconair romhainn ba bhun leis, nó go rabhamair róbhrúite sa chairt bheag! Pé cúis, bhíodh Mícheál bocht réidh lena bhuicéidín don mbrúchtadh a bhí le teacht, bliain i ndiaidh bliana. Ó, Dia linn, Dia linn, ní raibh fuascailt i ndán don mbuachaillín mánla go sroichimis port easa Loch an Pheidléara leathmhíle síos an bóthar toisc an bóthar a bheith róchúng chun stad. Ba mhór an faoiseamh dó is dúinn-ne ar fad tuirlingt den gcairt ar an lantán aerach úd, agus ar chuma na ngabhar sléibhe dreapadh suas go Pedlar’s Lake sara mbuailimis bóthar in athuair. Ba thuas ar bhruach an locha úd a leagas súil den gcéad uair ar an gcom mar a raibh Loch Croite go hard trasna an ghleanna uainn. Loch Croite Sea, Satharn geal i lár Meán Fómhair seo chaite fuaireas mo sheans, ar deireadh thiar, port Loch Croite a bhualadh den gcéad uair. Bhí Mícheál mar threoraí agam (is é chomh folláin le breac Loch Croite an turas seo!) toisc taithí aige siúd ar an ndúthaigh úd le fada an lá. Tar éis dúinn an chairt a fhágaint ag deireadh an bhóthairín sa Ghleann, dreapamair linn go socair ag leanúint ciumhais na habhann bige a shníonn as an loch. Tar éis leathuaire nó mar sin ag lúbadh go leanúnach i gcoinne an aird, cad é mar radharc a nochtadh ag béal an locha romhainn - léinseach ag síneadh go gléineach go ciumhais an choire i gcéin uainn. De réir mar bhogamair timpeall an locha, bhí léasa gréine ag scinneadh de shleasaibh Chnoc Bréanainn agus boilgíní solais ag lasadh uiscí lútála an locha – i bParthas dúinn! Parthas do gheolaithe an dúthaigh seo chomh maith, mar go bhfuil inti bunfhianaise ar ghníomhú na hoighearaoise 20,000 bliain ó shin, gan aon mhilleadh uirthi idir an dá linn. Seo mar a thráchtann Treasa Ní Dhubhda 2 (1935-2007) ar leá an oighir agus a thionchar ar an dtírdhreach máguaird, mar leanas: “Is féidir gluaiseacht an oighir a shamhlú gan móran dua anso, agus é ag déanamh a bhealach ó dheas. Áit a bhfuil na locha, is léir gur íslíodh an gleann go tobann anseo ag breis oigir a tháinig amach as na coirí ar a gcliatháin dheiseal. Níl ach sruthán beag ag taoscadh na loch, agus tá easa idir Loch an Leacan agus Loch Croichte. Tá deifríocht idir dhá thaobh an ghleanna – an cliathán ar chlé réidh cothrom agus an cliathán ar dheis briste bearnach.” 10 Corca West Dhuibhne Kerry LiveBeo

Mystery Derelict From – Cork Examiner, 25 January 1866

From – Cork Examiner, 30 October 1901

A derelict ship was spotted in Dingle Bay on Monday last by John Moriarty, a Killorglin pilot, who was crossing the bay in his boat. On nearing the vessel he found her to be dismasted and abandoned. He went on board with his crew and Dr. O’Kane of Inch who was in Moriarty’s boat. They brought the ship inside the bar of Inch to a safe anchorage.

It is reported that three fisherman, operating out of Brandon Creek in west Kerry, lost their lives in a boating accident. The alarm was raised on Wednesday morning when the men failed to return from a fishing trip. The local coastguards set off to search for the men but all they found was an upturned canoe. They also came across the men’s nets and weather clothing.

The vessel turned out to be the schooner Sir Charles Napier of Falmouth, carrying a part cargo of oak logs and, apart from the loss of her masts, spars and rigging, was otherwise in perfect condition.. The fate of her crew remains a mystery. She obviously encountered heavy weather causing her crew to cut her mast some four feet above the deck.

The missing men, presumed drowned, were John O’Connor (42), Michael Grumell (32) and J. J. O’Connor (18). When the coastguards arrived back to shore with the canoe there was great distress and sadness among relatives and the community at large.

Dingle Harbour Dredger From - Kerry Evening Post, 29 April 1905 The dredger, which is currently operating at Fenit, will commence work in Dingle Harbour on July 4 and is scheduled to complete operating there on August 4. The CDB are to provide an estimated £300 or half the cost of the work and the Harbour Board the other half. The dredger will operate around the pier but will also cut away a spur of the bank near the harbour’s mouth. This bank forces vessels entering or leaving the harbour to undertake a series of manoeuvres comparable to avoiding a family of mines.

Boat Race

From – Kerry Evening Post, 22 April 1854 Trinity College, Dublin, April 17, 1854. Sir – Are any of your readers aware that this curious old structure, situated near Dingle, is in a very ruinous state? A reverend friend of mine who has lately visited the bridge informs me that it will soon fall if not looked after and that a few shillings would save it for a long time. Surely it will not be considered too much to ask half a dozen of my fellow Kerrymen to expend a few shillings on the judicious repair of one of the most interesting structures in Kerry, or perhaps in the South of Ireland? Would that Kerry had an Archaeological Society to take charge of its numerous vestiges of antiquity but at present I do not entertain much hope of such a society being established. I am, sir, your very obedient faithful servant,

Richard Hitchcock.

From – Kerry Evening Post, 30 July 1836 A boat race took place in Dingle harbour last Tuesday between two locally owned gigs. One of these belonged to D. P. Thomson and the other to John McKenna. Mr. Thompson’s gig was pulled by two oarsmen only and with a steersman while Mr. McKenna’s gig was pulled by four Coastguards and with a steersman. The course was about one and a half miles. It looked to have the elements of an interesting race when they started off but it soon became obvious to all those watching from the shore that the Coastguards had no chance. Mr. Thompson’s gig was an easy winner and completed the course in 40 minutes.

Great take of Porpoises at Brandon From – Tralee Chronicle, 16 June 1854 Last Wednesday evening a school of porpoises, up to 100 in number, were observed by local fishermen to be sleeping on the water inside Brandon Point. The fishermen launched their canoes and rowed silently until they were outside the porpoises. They drove the startled creatures towards the shore until they stranded. Then the slaughter began and will prove to be a most valuable capture as the oil can be easily saved along with the dissected carcasses.

Illegal Procession From – Dublin Daily Express, 26 July 1856 On Tuesday the 1st of July, at the funeral of the late Rev. Dr. O’Sullivan, P. P. of Dingle, a procession of priests in third vestments, with their bishop, the Right Rev. Dr. Moriarty, carrying the Host, crucifix, candles, bells, books and incense, passed through the principal streets of Dingle. The police were witnesses of this illegal procession.

Potato Riot From – Limerick Chronicle, 1 July 1840 A riot by country people in Roscarbery, County Cork, resulted in the death of a police constable and the mortal wounding of a second constable. The police had fired in their own defence. The reason for the riot was that the country people were attempting to prevent, by force, the shipment of a cargo of potatoes to Dingle.

Farming News

letters will issue in tranches from now to year end,” the spokesperson added.

Louis Murchan

The spokesperson said that the department has “proactively highlighted” the opportunity for farmers to avoid these penalties by issuing press releases and text messages periodically to alert farmers when the nitrogen and phosphorus statements have been updated.

IRISH FARMING HAS EVERYTHING TO GAIN IN GOING GREEN’ – EAMON RYAN According to the new Minister for the Environment, etc, Irish farming has everything to gain in going green. This is a worrying announcement from a Minister who has little experience in agricultural related topics. Mr Ryan, by all accounts is a very nice person and a genuine politician, who has resisted the political extremes of some of his more radical colleagues. Farming is on its knees, at present, with now end in sight, in terms of the onslaught from regulation and pressures from milk and beef/sheep pricing. Anyone familiar with the current farming climate will understand that farmers are unsure of farm payments, with the Ghost of Brexit Past, and the Ghost of Coronavirus Present. And we don’t know what the Ghost of Future brings, but it will not bring goodies. We in Ireland also lost our EU Commissioner, who yielded influence above our weight, nationally in the corridors of power in Europe. There has been nothing secured with regard to Farm Payments, and no clear indication given as to their future structure, or levels. Farmers live in fear that the Covid-19 crisis may eat up the reserves that provide the farm payment stream. This is not a endless well of euros, dollars, and yen. It is finite, and the current pandemic situation is gobbling up vast amounts of these funds. So, to tell us in the farming community that we must pull up our socks, and be prepared to adapt, when the world is in crisis, and other nations will be more reliant on Ireland’s food production does not make sense. We here in Ireland produce approximately 10 kg of food, for every 1 kg required for national consumption, in the country. The excess 90% goes for export, much of this to the UK, but also to the EU, Middle East and Far Eastern market. These markets are open, mainly due to food shortfalls in these countries. Not every nation is blessed with the climatic conditions that we (and similarly New Zealand, in the Southern Hemisphere) experience. We are net food producers. We make up the shortfall in other countries. The Climate Action (Amendment) Bill has the fear of God put into many of us. Our farming communities are the Guardians of our Countryside, and they do a good job. They ask only that they be allowed produce sufficient produce to guarantee a sufficient income, and live a decent lifestyle. Other sectors have their unions, and labour law, and Health & Safety regulations, including the right to “Dignity at Work”. Farmers ask the same. So, Please Minister, make sure when you introduce your new Bill, next week or whenever, in the Dail or wherever, make sure that you insure that the 130,000 farmers, our primary producers, are protected. In the mid 1980’s there were 250,000 farmers in the country. They are becoming a rare species, and will soon need protection themselves. NITRATE PENALTY LETTER ISSUING The Department of Agriculture recently started issuing of penalty letters to farmers for breaches of the Nitrates limits in respect of 2019. This is in accordance with the Nitrates Regulation that allows farmers to produce and apply 170 kg of Organic Nitrogen per hectare, and 250kg in total nitrogen applied to a hectare. Letters will be issued in tranches from now to year end. If you receive one of these letters, it will be too late to rectify the situation, but you may be in danger of repeating this situation again for 2020. As a result, you may want to contact your agricultural advisor, as solutions may be available. The department conducts administrative checks annually to ensure compliance with maximum stocking rates prescribed in the Nitrates regulations of 170kg/N/ha; or for those who hold an approved derogation of 250kg/N/ha. Over 900 farmers identified to date as having breached the limits have been notified of this and the resulting deduction to payments. “Work is ongoing to identify those in breach of the regulations and further 14 West Kerry Live

Measures farmers can take to reduce Nitrate levels include: •

Exporting organic manure;

Renting additional land; or

The temporary movement of animals.

The deadline for submission of the Nitrate record form declaring these actions (Record 3, 4 and 5 forms) in relation to this year is Thursday, December 31, 2020, the department representative concluded. Last week, the department announced that interim Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N and P statements) for the period January to August 2020 are now available on the department’s online ‘agfood’ system. CSO REMINDS FARMERS TO RETURN CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE FORMS The Central Statistics Office (CSO) is reminding farmers to complete and return their Census of Agriculture forms now, as the deadline has passed. Farmers who have not yet completed and returned the census will be receiving a reminder letter this week from the CSO. The office highlighted that answering the Census of Agriculture should only take a few minutes, as the census form has been reduced to four pages. The census can either be filled out on a ‘hard copy’ document and returned by the freepost envelope provided by the CSO, or it can be filled out online. The information provided by farmers will be strictly confidential and will only be used for statistical purposes, the office stressed. You have the option to complete the paper form and return it using the freepost envelope or to complete it online using your unique login details that arrived by post this week,” he added. This information will be of great value to the farming community and it forms part of an EU-wide programme of farm censuses being conducted this year. Your response to the census is confidential and will be used only for statistical purposes,” Doherty pointed out. Farmers are reminded that this is not what one would regard as compulsory from a farm payment point-of-view, but it is COMPULSORY, as it is required by law that every citizen assists the CSO, in their work. Also, it’s not a difficult form to fill out, and farm advisors have been known to assist, if it is bothersome. So, take 5 to 10 minutes, and fill it out. Or stick it in an envelope and post it to your advisor. TREE DAY MARKED BY PLANTING TREE IN PRIMARY SCHOOL THROUGH-OUT THE COUNTRY Ireland’s forests have over 312 million tonnes of carbon stored in the trees and soil and make a significant contribution to climate change. And of course, as timber they are also a great carbon store. So, we also need to use more timber and wood in our ever day lives. Referring to the theme for this year’s campaign, which is to “Be a Force for Nature”, the Minister, who was accompanied by Eanna Ní Lamhna, President of the Tree Council of Ireland and beloved radio environmentalist, encouraged the primary school children she met to become more active in sustainability and climate issues. It is important to maintain Ireland’s unique plant health status to protect our trees, forests and the wider environment. DAFM continues to implement the recently published the Plant Health Biosecurity Strategy. The Tree Council of Ireland, called on primary schools across the country to plant a tree on Thursday, 1st October 2020. The theme for this year’s campaign is “Be a Force for Nature” to encourage primary school children around the country to become more active in sustainability and climate issues. Known as Tetra Pak Tree Day, this is an opportunity for children, teachers and parents to put down the school books, spend time outdoors and learn to become more environmentally aware. The campaign’s mascot Sammy Squirrel can be found on the back of Avonmore school milk cartons from September with simple tips on how to become more

environmentally conscious. As part of this year’s Tetra Pak Tree Day, 1,500 native tree saplings will be made available through the campaign website for primary schools to plant on their school grounds, or in a pot in the classroom. Planting a tree is also one of the requirements to achieve the Green-School’s Green Flag for Biodiversity. More details on the campaign including new class lessons, videos, information on recycling, food waste and nature walks can be found on www.treeday. ie Each year Tree Day places a focus on a different native tree and this year the chosen tree is the Scots Pine or An Giúis, one of Ireland’s few evergreen trees. The seeds from the Scots Pine cones are one of the red squirrels’ favourite foods and honey bees use the tree’s resinous sap to make propolis or bee glue; a sealant for their hive that also protects them from bacteria and viruses. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938 (B Ag Sc, Dip EIA Mgmt) Agricultural & Environmental Advisor

West Kerry GAA Breandán Fitzgerald Moran’s of Dingle West Kerry Senior Football Championship 2020 Final – An Ghaeltacht 0-9 to 1-13 Dingle Dingle defeated An Ghaeltacht in the Moran’s of Dingle West Kerry Senior Championship 2020 Final on Sunday 27th September in Gallarus, An Ghaeltacht 0-9 to 1-13 Dingle. This victory gave Dingle a three in a row of West Kerry Senior Football Championships and it means that Dingle have now won eight out of the last ten West Kerry Senior Football Championships. An Ghaeltacht’s Éanna Ó Conchúir opened the scoring with a point from play. Dingle responded with a Ruadhán McCarthy point from play and a Tomás Sheehy point from a free kick to put Dingle ahead. Éanna Ó Conchúir with a point from play levelled the game shortly after and he gave An Ghaeltacht the lead on the 15 minute mark with another fine effort from play. With Éanna Ó Conchúir, Cathal Ó Lúing, PJ Mac Láimh, Pádraig Óg Ó Sé, Rob Ó Sé and Colm Ó Muircheartaigh driving An Ghaeltacht on it wasn’t long till Ruaidhraí Ó Beaglaoich extended the lead to two with a point from a free kick shortly after. The score at the first half water break was, An Ghaeltacht 0-4 to 0-2 Dingle. As with many games since the introduction of the water break the course of the game changed on the resumption of activities. Dingle through some great play by Niall Geaney, Paul Devane, Breandán Kelliher, Patrick O’Connor, Darragh O’Sullivan, George Durrant, Barry O’Sullivan and Mikey Geaney started a fightback and a point from play from Ruadhán McCarthy left them just one behind. Young Dylan Geaney levelled the game with a fine point from play shortly after and when brother Niall started yet another attack from his wing back berth, it was Dylan Geaney who put Dingle one point up with 25 minutes played in Gallarus. An Ghaeltacht responded and a well worked move resulted in another Ruaidhraí Ó Beaglaoich point from a free kick to level the game. When Referee Brendan Brosnan blew the half time whistle the score was An Ghaeltacht 0-5 to 0-5 Dingle. Matthew Flaherty replaced Colin Moriarty for Dingle and Cathal Ó Beaglaoich replaced Seán Ó Luing for An Ghaeltacht at half time. Dingle opened the second half scoring with a point from play from Tomás Sheehy, this was cancelled out with a Ruaidhraí Ó Beaglaoich point from a free kick for An Ghaeltacht. An Ghaeltacht lost Tomás Ó Sé to injury shortly after and he was replaced by Oigí Ó Sé. Tomás Sheehy put Dingle ahead by one point with a point from a free kick shortly after. Dingle lost Paul Devane to injury and he was replaced by Mícheál Flannery. Dingle’s Tom O’Sullivan with another good run set up another visitor attack, and it was left to Dylan Geaney to extend Dingle’s lead to two with a point from play. The score at the second half water break was, An Ghaeltacht 0-6 to 0-8 Dingle. Dingle added another point from a Dylan Geaney free kick on the resumption of play. 16 West Kerry Live

Dingle Captain Mikey Geaney with Corn Thómais Ághas An Ghaeltacht introduced Ciarán Ó Coileáin and Colm Ó Gráinne, and it was left to Ciarán Ó Coileáin to reduce the deficit to two when he finished a wonderful An Ghaeltacht move with a point from play shortly after. Great credit to both teams at this stage of the game as they fought fairly for every inch of ground in Gallarus. The lucky supporters present cheered on tackle after tackle, shoulder against shoulder and it was great to see both teams go against each with all of their might. With the game in the melting pot it was the Dingle defence led by Niall Geaney, Tom Leo O’Sullivan and Patrick O’Connor that broke through An Ghaeltacht ranks. Tom O’Sullivan kicked a point from play for Dingle and shortly after Barry O’Sullivan gave Tomás Mac an tSaoir no chance when he scored the game’s only goal. Ruadhán McCarthy added another point from play for Dingle shortly after and when corner back Patrick O’Connor kicked a point from play it gave Dingle an 8 point lead, An Ghaeltacht 0-7 to 1-12 Dingle with 22 minutes played in Gallarus. Ruaidhraí Ó Beaglaoich kicked a couple of points from free kicks for An Ghaeltacht but it was Dingle’s day and it was Dylan Geaney who kicked the last point from play in Gallarus. Smear test- Why get one and what it involves

smears and are inviting them first for screening. If, however, you are overdue screening and feel anxious and have not received a letter, please contact your nurse or GP who can discuss this with you and can in these cases, book you in for your smear.

Brid O'Sullivan

Your smear test is not a beauty contest; it is a screening test that can prevent cervical cancer. As a smear taker, I could not give two hoots when you had your last wax.... I just feel privileged to have gained your trust to be your smear taker. When was your last smear test?

Cervical cancer is the eighth most common cancer in Ireland, with on average 277 cases yearly, resulting in 88 deaths in women. It is generally caused by the HPV (human papillomavirus) and initially develops from pre-cancerous cells progressing onto cancer over the proceeding 10 to 20 years. The cervical cancer screening programme, which was introduced free of charge to all women aged 25 to 60 years aims to prevent cervical cancer developing by screening women to detect pre-cancerous cells so that they can then be treated before cancer develops. The smear test has now advanced to a HPV cervical screening test. It checks the health of your cervix, what we call the opening to your womb from your vagina. This is the opening that expands in childbirth. The cervical screening test is not checking for cancer but it is hoping to prevent cancer from developing. Going for a smear test is one of the best ways women have available to them, free of charge in preventing cervical cancer. If you are a woman aged 25-60 years reading this, it is time to put yourself first and not delay having a cervical screening test every time it is due. The new screening format tests the cervical screening sample for HPV - the virus that can cause cervical cancer to develop. If HPV is found, this is good! Then the same sample is further checked for any abnormal/precancerous cell changes in your cervix. If these cells are found, this can be treated simply and effectively. I am a nurse, I am a midwife, I am a woman and mother to a little girl. It saddens me that in this modern age women of all ages defer their smear test and in some cases opt out of attending for it. I feel perhaps that this is mainly down to fear and embarrassment. I will let you in on a secret - your smear taker is a woman with a vagina too! We all need to have our smear tests; of course I do not relish having mine, but I far prefer it in order to reduce my chances of being one of the 88 women who very sadly do not survive cervical cancer.

The screening test takes about 5 minutes; the actual form filling is the longest part of the appointment! What happens in the appointment? - You will be asked to undress from the waist down and lie on the couch with a blanket/cover over you. - The nurse or doctor will, with your consent, gently insert a little instrument called a speculum into your vagina. This holds the wall of your vagina open, so that the smear taker can see your cervix which sits at the top of the vagina. - A small soft brush will be used to gently collect a sample of cells from the cervix. As a smear taker, I fully respect that you may feel uncomfortable or embarrassed. The procedure should not be painful and steps can be taken in order to prevent this. As the patient, you have the right to stop the procedure at any time. You can bring your own chaperone with you i.e. friend, mother, partner etc. You can bring music to listen to as a distraction. I will talk you through deep breathing strategies etc. Anything that increases relaxation and your comfort is very welcome! The HPV cervical screening is a better way of cervical screening as it prevents more cancers and it means some people will have fewer tests. Please bear in mind that it is NOT a test for cancer. If you have any unusual symptoms such as irregular vaginal bleeding, bleeding after sex, bleeding after menopause, pain during sex, pain in your pelvis (anywhere between your belly button and the top of your thighs) etc. please speak to you GP or practice nurse. While these symptoms may not necessarily mean you have cervical cancer, please NEVER IGNORE SYMPTOMS. Contact your nurse or doctor. All people with a cervix aged 25 to 65 should be invited for regular free screening every 3 or 5 years, depending on your age by letter. Please log onto CervicalCheck on www2.hse.ie/cervical-screening/ and click on "When is my next cervical screening test due?" to find out when your next smear is due. Having been halted during COVID-19, screening is now restarting and CervicalCheck are prioritising women who are overdue

Vincent Manning and John Moriarty in Orchard Lane, Dingle where a new defibrillator has been installed on the gable of Lord Baker's Restaurant. This is the third of three defibrillators which have been installed in the Dingle area recently thanks to Vincent's fundraising efforts. The initial idea was to raise money for a single defibrillator to be located at the top of the pier, to this end Vincent set up a GoFundMe page with the intention of cycling Slea Head and climbing Mt. Brandon to raise the funds. The Covid-19 pandemic put paid to the cycle and climb (for the moment) but the fundraising continued until enough money was raised for the purchase of 3 units. The defibrillators are located on the Harbour Masters office at the top of the pier, in Orchard Lane (Lord Baker's gable) and at Scoil an Ghleanna in Glens. When it is safe to do so, there will be training courses available to train people locally in how to use the units. Each of the units carries the message " I gcuimhne ar / In memory of Máire Pháid Manning", in reference to Vincent's mother who died of a heart attack in 2015. Vincent would like to thank all those who donated money, Dingle Harbour Master Nigel Collins, John and Maureen Moriarty in Lord Baker's, Seanachán MacGearailt in Scoil an Ghleanna and electrician John Lynch.

Small Changes: Black Gold

BLACK GOLD Anyone with a farming background will no doubt have heard of milk being referred to as white gold. While we can’t all be dairy farmers we can all make some ‘black gold’, the term often used to describe compost. Homemade compost is peat free, reduces the need for pesticides and synthetic fertilisers, recycles nutrients back into the soil and promotes healthy plant growth. It is an excellent peat free alternative and its use will contribute to preserving the biodiversity of our bog lands and their role in carbon sequestration. Even if you are not an avid gardeners or don’t have a garden, home composting will make you more aware of what you throw out and as a consequence will reduce your waste. Composting makes us less dependent on landfills and decreases greenhouse gas emissions. On average food and garden waste make up one third of the contents of our rubbish bins so by composting at home you reduce the individual costs associated with waste disposal but also the need for waste disposal companies to collect, treat and dispose of biodegradable materials. With or without intervention all organic waste slowly rots down but the key is to a good composting system is to get it to break down as quickly and cleanly possible by providing ideal conditions. It’s a relatively simple process if you follow a few rules and take into account the following considerations. WHICH METHOD? Choosing which composting system is best for your needs requires consideration of the amount of space and capacity required, whether you compost mostly food, garden waste or both, cost, your mobility and the time available to you to maintain the system. Wormeries (know-how, compost worms and worm bin are available from Annascaul based business The Worm Bin), bokashi (a traditional Japanese compost system which ferments food) and food digestion cones are good options for food waste especially if you wish to compost meat, fish and dairy waste, while grass cycling and mulching are suitable for gardening waste. Holding systems (e.g. compost bins/heaps) and turning systems (e.g. tumblers, 2 to 3 bay compost heaps) are most suitable for mixed food and garden waste. While these systems are not suitable for cooked food, fish, meat and dairy waste, they produce high quality compost at very low cost and require very little maintenance. An excellent brochure to help choose the best compost system for your needs can be sourced on www.stopfoodwaste.ie

pine cones, hair, seaweed, animal bedding (from plant eating animals only) and straw. Like all diets, everything in moderation is key as is a diversity of waste to help the organisms thrive. Too much green waste will result in a slimy sludge with a strong odour while too much brown material will slow down the composting process considerably. When starting off using two thirds brown waste (by bulk) and one third green waste (by bulk) is recommended and you can adjust this ratio if required based on how your compost looks and smells (it should be virtually odourless). Knowing what not to compost is equally as important. Diseased plants, perennial weeds, any meat fish or dairy based foods, oils, shells, vacuum bags, glossy printed paper ashes and dog and cat waste are all amongst the items not advised. Teabags are known to contain micro plastics so whilst they will break down in a compost heap the micro plastics will remain. Egg shells are also controversial! They will break down but very slowly and some people find their inclusion attract vermin. Grinding them down using a pestle and mortar or a coffee grinder prior to placing them on the compost pile is an option however. Produce stickers are easily added to a heap unwittingly but they do not breakdown. Bioplastics (e.g. vegware) are also problematic. Commercial and home composting are different systems (commercial systems operate at much higher temperatures) and unless specifically specified that a bioplastics is suitable for home compost heap it should be placed in your brown bin. All living organisms need water; too little and they will die, too much and they will drown or suffocate when starved of oxygen in a waterlogged system. Having a lid or cover on the compost reduces the chances of too much water. Many people place their compost bins and heaps on a layer of raised mesh rather than directly in contact with bare soil to allow drainage and ventilation. Placing the compost bin or heap out of direct sunshine will minimise the chances of it drying out. As the compost breaks down the oxygen is used up so it is best to turn it from time to time to ensure it is well aerated. This can be done either using a garden fork or investing in a tumbler bin to reduce labour or if mobility is an issue. Aerating the compost prevents anaerobic bacteria from thriving thus ensuring that bad odours do not develop. VERMIN One of the main misgivings many people have about composting is that it will attract vermin such as flies, scavenging birds and of course, rodents. The following precautions should however eliminate this worry Ensuring that the correct types of waste are added to a compost heap is a key factor in discouraging pests. Keeping a cover or lid on the compost deters birds as well as helping to retain the heat in the pile to help accelerate decomposition. As long as meat, bones etc. are not added to a compost heap ordinary household flies will not be attracted to it. Smaller fruit flies are attracted by fermenting or rotting fruit and their presence indicates that there is too much green waste in the heap. This can be alleviated by adding extra brown material. Ensuring that the brown and green waste is well mixed or finishing with a thin layer of brown material to cover food scraps prevents this issue in the first place. Rats are naturally shy creatures and don’t like being disturbed so a compost heap which is visited and turned regularly is unlikely to attract them. In addition, rats do travel more than 300 feet from their nests and always travel on established runs so placing the compost heap where access routes, droppings etc. are visible will alert you to any potential nocturnal visits.

COMPOSTING BASICS

RESOURCES

It is not possible to address the requirements of all the different systems in this article so I will focus on the simplest for beginners-holding and turning systems.

There is a wealth of information online providing practical advice and troubleshooting on composting. Some good resources include:

Like all living organisms the worms and decomposers responsible for breaking down the organic material in your compost need food, air and water to thrive so successful composting is essentially about providing ideal conditions for these organisms. In terms of food, a vegetarian menu is best for the organisms which will colonise a compost heap (unless you wish to actively attract vermin) and the ‘diet’ they require can be divided into a balance between nitrogen rich greens (to provide protein for growth and reproduction)) and carbon rich browns (for energy). Greens include grass cuttings, plants, cooked and raw vegetables, fruit and veg peelings, coffee grounds and tea leaves. Browns include newspapers, toilet roll inserts, cardboard, leaves, twigs, 22 West Kerry Live

Cromane News Jane Casey LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 30th Sept in the Cromane Gaa Lotto Draw were 5.18.19.32. There was no winner of the €5,200 Jackpot. Deirdre Galvin, Stookisland - Ticket sold on Line. Bridie O'Neill, Caragh Bridge - Annual Ticket. Annual Ticket Winner: Michael Reilly sold on Line. Cromane GAA SENIORS: County Novice Football Championship semi-final: Cromane 4-9, Lios Póil 1-10 Our seniors qualified for this year’s County Novice final after an eight-point win over Lios Póil in Keel on Sunday afternoon. This game was our senior side’s first competitive game in two months since our last encounter against the same opposition in our final Junior Championship group game in Firies back in early August. Cromane won that day by 1-8 to 0-7. A windy afternoon meant quality football was at a premium, but both sides should be applauded for their efforts. Lios Póil had beaten SneemDerrynane a fortnight ago in the quarter-final and also had a West Kerry championship game (a loss) against neighbours Annascaul. Cromane got first wind in breezy Keel and led by 1-1 to no score after five minutes with Sean O’Sullivan notching our first goal. Lios Póil then took over and proceeded to kick the next five points - the highlights being fine scores from Gareth Ó Nuanáin and, just before the first water break, from Deaglán Ó Suilleabháin to give Lios Póil a 0-5 to 1-1 lead. They held this one-point advantage until the break, leading by 0-7 to 1-3. Two quickfire Donnchadh Walsh points edged us back in front before points from Deaglán Ó Suilleabháin and Maitiu Seán Ó Grifín restored the West Kerry men’s one-point lead. A Darren Houlihan free levelled matter again in the 40th minute before a fumbled ball under the Cromane crossbar gave Deaglán Ó Suilleabháin a tap-in goal for Lios Póil right on the second-half water break. Lios Póil were now in a good position leading by three, 1-9 to 1-6. However, we came out from this water break and dominated most of the possession from here on in as they would outscore their opponents by 3-3 to 0-1. Our half-back line at this stage featuring Brice Dourieu, Kieran O’Sullivan, and Brendan Foley started to dominate and mopped up a load of ball around midfield where Liam Walsh also started to make an impression. A Mikey Houlihan goal, expertly dispatched at the far post after a fine Kieran O’Sullivan run got the Mid Kerry men back on track. Lios Póil did edge in front with five minutes left with another fine Deaglán Ó Suilleabháin point but this was to be their last score. A Darren Houlihan goal for Cromane (now positioned on the edge of the square) with three minutes rocked Lios Póil and when our evergreen duo of Donnchadh Walsh and Sean O’Sullivan added rapid points the game was done. A fourth Cromane goal from Danny Shea put a gloss on the score for us after what was a hard-fought win. Scorers: Sean O’Sullivan 1-2, Darren Houlihan 1-2, Mikey Houlihan 1-1, Donnchadh Walsh 0-3, Danny Shea 1-0, Emmet Casey 0-1. Cromane: Sean Teahan; Liam Teahan, Conor Sugrue, Eanna Healy; Cathal Crosby, Brendan Foley, Brice Dourieu; Darren Houlihan, Donnchadh Walsh; Shane Ahern, Kieran O’Sullivan, Finbar Casey; Emmet Casey, Mikey Houlihan, Sean O’Sullivan. Sna fichidí bhí foireann peile paróiste Fionntrá páirteach sa West Kerry League, níor bhuadar riamh é ach bhí fóirne maithe acu.Ar na h-imireoirí san bhí Seán agus Gearóid Sears, Micheál Ó Sé Rowland Ó Muircheartaigh agus Brian Ó Lúing ó Chill Na gColmán. Ins na triochaidí i League na Gaeltachta bhí foireann ana mhaith acu agus bhuadar craobh na Gaeltachta go minic. Ar na h-imireoirí ba mhó cáil bhí Mike Aindí O Sé, Seán Léan Ó Muircheartaigh, Micheál Ó Fiannachta agus Jonathan O Muircheartaigh. Don gcluiche ceannais théadh na sluaite ón bparóiste siar thar Mám Na Gaoithe go Baile An Fheirtéaraigh, cuid ar rothair agus cuid ag siúl mar bhí airgead gann agus ní raibh na rothair acu. Sa tráthnóna bhí na tithe táirne go léir ar an mBuailtín ag cur thar maoil agus an tigh táirne i gCeanntrá lán go doras an oíche sin. I dtigh táirne Uí Chatháin bhí clós laistiar den bpub agus sheasadh Tom Connor in airde ar an gclaí agus in ard a ghutha thugadh sé ainmneacha na stáisiún traenacha trasna na Stát Aontaithe. Seo mar a bhí: New York, Buffalo, Cleveland Chicago, Lincoln, Denver Salt Lake City agus San Francisco. Ba mhór an sult a bhaintí as.

Dingle Notes Richie Williams RETIREMENTS. A number of local people who were actively involved in various aspects of public life in Dingle have recently retired from their respective occupations. Garage owner John Griffin who operated in Goat Street for many years and laterally in Milltown has used the Covid Lockdown to close the doors for the last time. Michael Kavanagh of Marian Park has sampled a number of different occupations including bus driver and barman but better known in latter years as The Traffic Warden retired from Kerry Council staff a few weeks ago. Two very popular teachers attached to the CBS Primary School Kay O'Sullivan and Micheál Ó Concubhair both said goodbye to the classroom for the last time just a few days ago. And what a great retirement parade the school fife and drum band organised for them through the streets of the town on Friday morning. We wish all four many years of good health and hope they enjoy the numerous opportunities that retirement offers to all who join that cherished club. SPORT. Congratulations to the Dingle Senior Footballers on their victory over An Gaeltacht in the Morans West Kerry Football Championship final in Gallarus on Sunday last. Congratulations also to Niall Geaney on his Man of the Match Award in the final.

A special mention of Matthew Flaherty's recent feat in playing a big part in Kilmoyley's victory in the Kerry Senior Hurling Championship final this year. Matthew is the first Dingle man to win a County Senior Hurling medal but there is at least one other local resident who holds such a coveted medal but not with the same club. OLD ICE PLANT. The Department of the Marine have issued notice that they intend to knock the Old Ice Plant in Strand Street starting on Thursday October 15th. What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís A move to Level 3 restrictions from 12 o'clock on Tuesday 6th October means that people are being asked to "work from home unless absolutely necessary to attend in person". The Dingle Hub will remain open for existing clients; we are asking all of our community to respect these restrictions and limit use of services to times that are absolutely necessary and use a home alternative where possible. Indoor meetings cannot take place for the duration of the Level 3 restrictions. As according to the guidelines we are currently unable to facilitate hot desk bookings. It is in all our power to change the course of this virus so if we can double down, keep our distance and stay vigilant on sanitisation measures then hopefully we can all return to the more flexible (and enjoyable) Level 2 in three weeks’ time. We look forward to welcoming you in the near future when possible. Have you recently started working from here? Are you considering a part-time or permanent move to the Dingle Peninsula? Are you selfemployed, remote working or a start-up business? Perhaps you are in a position within your business to bring remote working opportunities with you and build a team from here? We want to hear from you!! Please connect with us at info@dinglehub.com and help us build a vibrant, diverse and dynamic community and network. It’s not necessary to need a physical desk or office space in the hub to be part of this wider community. We’d also love you to connect with us on social media platforms - Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook. Anyone who wishes to use the facilities can book hot desk or conference room options online at www.dinglehub.com. The conference room can accommodate up to 3 people while maintaining social distancing. It is important to note that access to the Dingle Hub will be by prior appointment only for the duration of Covid-19 restrictions. Fánaigí slán, sábháilte. Stay safe and well everyone. OBITUARY

Score 2-14 20pts to 5-09 19pts.

The news of the death of Gene O’Driscoll, Ballinknockane on Tuesday 22nd. September was received with deep sadness and shock in the community. Beloved husband of Sheila and late wife Julie and dear father of Patrick, Gene, Johnny and Helen, Grandchildren Christine, Gene, Patrick, Timmy, Michael, Julia, Grace, Brian, Eoghan , Lilly and Tori, great-grandchildren, brothers Mícheál, Seamus and Patrick, sisters Peggy, Mary, Bernie and Ann, nephews, nieces, daughters-in-law, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Martina's young daughter Melissa was cheering her on from the sideline, surely a case of Deja Vu, rolling back the years to Martina on the sideline cheering her mother Breda Quirke on playing with Kerry and not too long ago ! You can't beat breeding they say !

Gene was laid to rest on Friday morning following a private family Mass at St. Marys Church Camp in keeping with Govt. guidelines.

And Martinas brother Kenneth Quirke is now Chairman of Kerry GAA in New York. Great to see Martina and Kenneth flying the Kerry flag in New York ! Well done and continued success to both of you. LOTTO

Annascaul Club joined a Community guard of honour lining the road to Camp Cemetary to say farewell to a club stalwart and a respected member of the community.

Annascaul weekly Lotto has recommenced. Tickets can be purchased at all the usual shops and pubs in Camp and Annascaul.

As well as playing for Annascaul up until the 1980s, Gene also played with Kerry, Galway, London and New York during the 1960s and 1970s. He was on the first ever Kerry Under 21 team which contested and won the Munster Championship in Kenmare in 1962.

Great win for Annascaul against Tarbert in The Kerry County Junior Championship. Score Annascaul 2 - 19 to 0-12.

In later years he was a familiar face at club matches. His sons Johnny and Bingo have both represented Kerry at all levels. Gene and his family have made a tremendous contribution to Annascaul Club over the years. Gene was a great character too, generous to a fault, looking after many of the young lads in the area who worked for him in England and the USA in the old days. Dr. Sean Murphy former Kerry Football legend joined the guard of honour on Friday to pay his respect to Gene on his outstanding contribution to Kerry football.

Gene will be sadly missed by all his family, relatives and friends in the community. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís. Margaret Doyle (nee Downes) Foill, Camp passed away peacefully on Friday 25th. September. Margaret, a native of Quilty, Co. Clare emigrated to Chicago when she was a very young girl. There she met and married the great Accordion player and musician Jack Doyle from Ballinacourty, Annascaul. At the time Jack was playing the music circuit in Chicago and doing very well. However the young couple had their heart set on returning home to Ireland and coming from farming backgrounds, they decided to buy a Farm in Foill, Camp in 1963. Margaret loved farming and soon they built up a fine Dairy herd of cows. Margaret worked hard on the farm and was very content raising her family with her late husband, Jack. The house was always alive with music too. And Margaret entertained and welcomed musicians from far and near and there were some mighty music sessions and ball nights in the house down through the years. Mother of Kerry Football legend Tommy Doyle and John, Brendan and Mike, Margaret was very proud of all of their football achievements and the extended familys great contribution to the local Annascaul GAA Club and West Kerry football. Indeed Margaret thought the world of her grand children boys and girls and she was also lucky to meet and enjoy her great grandchildren in life. Margaret is survived by her sons Tommy, John, Brendan and Mike, 28 West Kerry Live

Now is the perfect time for some warming and comfort food. Food like this will always help lift your mood. A good stew is full of flavour, it is easy to cook but with a little attention at the beginning is the difference between an average stew and a good stew. Take your time to brown the meat then slowly cook the vegetables. After this once it is in place you can sit back and let it work away. Ingredients 8 chicken thighs, skin on rapeseed oil

Put a pan on over medium to high heat. Once hot add a little oil to the pan, add the chicken skin side down. Greta’s Herbs Gardening for Biodiversity Greta McCarthy O’Brien

wildlife. No matter what size your outdoor space you can plan and plant for biodiversity. Mini habitats can be created anywhere and often occur naturally, succeeding most effectively without man’s interference - so perhaps turn a blind eye to that messy pile of scrub in the corner behind the shed. Biodiversity loves the laid-back gardener! A perfect example of a biodiversity garden is the recent creation at the Díseart in Dingle by Breda Enright and her dedicated team, designed by Mary Reynolds with construction work by Sean Moriarty. It is an absolute joy, consisting of breath-taking flower meadows, woven willow structures and an interesting selection of my herbs. I'd highly recommend a visit. The following list contains ideas to encourage you to create a garden with a purpose which will attract a wide variety of birds, beneficial insects and mammals. If mankind becomes extinct at least we can leave behind some life forms!

Angelica archangelica © Rob Beighton

Most of us have experienced some form of isolation during this virus pandemic and sadly many of us have suffered profound personal loss. The need for solace and hope has led us back to the garden - safe within the confines of our own boundary. Cutting the hedge or mowing the lawn is no longer a chore but a pastime to cherish. Growing and harvesting vegetables, herbs and flowers is an extremely gratifying activity and the tranquillity of being in the garden has a therapeutic effect on our mental wellbeing. The one thing we can safely touch is the pure earth. We can retrace our steps back a generation and for many of us during these contemplative times - memories of old Ireland come flooding back. My nostalgia is linked to my childhood in East Cork, particularly around harvest time: the picking of new spuds from the rich black earth, the heady scent of tomatoes in my fathers' glasshouses, the excitement of running after the noisy combine harvesters to catch the fallen pea pods – and on warm nights, lolling on haystacks sharing ghost stories. There were plenty of bees and butterflies back then and we felt secure in our natural environment. Now several decades on, life is very different and the essential heart of existence is threatened in so many ways. In his documentary on extinction, David Attenborough says, “Scientists have linked our destructive relationship with nature with the emergence of COVID-19”. A startling fact is around one million species out of 8m on earth are now threatened with extinction. There are many facets to our destructive behaviour, but annihilation of habitats is top of the list - from rainforests to hedgerows we have a lot to answer for in the court of divine creation. We should all strive to understand the concept of biodiversity, for gardeners this simply means increasing the variety of living things in our garden by creating or preserving vital habitats such as ponds, boglands, flower meadows, woodlands or hedgerows and by growing plants which enrich

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Buadh ar fhoireann peile sinsear na Gaeltacha i gCraobh Chluiche Chiarraí Thiar agus buadh ar an bhfoireann fé 14 bl. i gcomórtas caide an chontae. An- ghradam dul dtí an gcraobh chluiche an chontae agus ní féidir leis na sinsir a bheith ag buachaint i gcónaí. Is mó duine ná beadh sásta ach ní féidir leat a bheith ar ardán na bua coitianta. Deir an sean-ráiteas d’imiríodar go maith ach ní maith a ndothain. Braitheann buanna ar an gcumann atá ag iarraidh foireann a chur le chéile nó cumann go mbíonn tarrrac ar imreoirí acu. Cuimhnigh ar an imreóir go bhfuil aige dúchas agus go leanann a gaisce go minic, gaisce gur as a ndúchas a bhíonn cupla imreoir go maith agus an braon ceart ionta . Cad fé Pat Spillane, na Géabhannaigh agus muinntir Shé. Is deacair an bheara a bhaint dóibh. Rud a chuireann an conach orm go mbíonn duine ag rá ‘suas na páirce’ in ionad suas fén bpáirc ar TG4. Ní locht a lochtaíonn ach is fuirist an bhacaí a shárú ach duine a chur ar an eolas ceart seachas é a bheith ag spalpadh dearmad gan deallramh. Tá sé go maith. Ní lucht a lochtaíonn agus is fearr ceart ná mí cheart.Níl le déanamh ach focal amháin a cheartú. Is mó duine a bhain sásamh as an gcraobh chluiche iomána Chorcaí. Bhí agus tá traidisiún brea ag baint leis an dá fhoireann. Bhuaidh an clog fé dhó ar imreóirí an Ghleanna ach bhí an beagan mór ag imreóirí na Carraige Duibhe an babhta seo. Tá stair ag baint leis na fóirne seo. Ní bhuaileadar le chéile lé dhá bhlian agus daichead sa chraobh chluiche. Cinnte bhuaidh an clog ar an nGeann nó fuinneamh ná raibh ann ar deire. Ard chluiche agus sár imreoirí. Bhí buachaillí na Carraige Dúibhe ar fheabhas go mór mhór sa deireadh. Déarfa gur lá breá a bhí ag na himreóirí ach ní hamhlaiidh a bhí, ach gála agus báisteach. Ná cuirfea do mhadra amach fén ndoineann. I ndeire an lae d’éirigh leis an gCarraig Dhubh. Ard chluiche agus ard imreóiri. Ní raibh mágáine eatortha.Tá moladh ag dul do shaineolaithe na nDéise TG4 a chuir an chluiche isteach go lár an úrláir chugainn. Thugas geábhadh bheag ar imreóirí sacair ban Shasana. Cad é a dhuine bhí cuid acu ar fheabhas ar fad, mar foireann Arsenal. Gan dabth is iad na Meiriceánaigh banríona an tsacair, ach tá Sasana agus an Bhrasaoil ar fheabhas chomh maith. Rud a chuireann díomá orm ná nuair a bhíonn Amhrán na bhFiann á chasadh is beag in aon chor a bhíonn ag déanamh aon iarracht baint éigin a bheith acu le amhrán Náisiúnta Éirinn. Tá sé náireach ní amháin an masla a tugtar don Amhrán Náisiúnta ach an t-iompar páistiúil a bhíonn ar siúl ag baill na bhfóirne. Bheadh súil agam go mbeadh Amhrán Náisiúnta ag gach mac máthar agus gan a bheith inár imreóirí dall. aineolach, gan meas acu ortha féin. Tá siad á náiriú féin le linn amhrán na bhFiann. Ag tosnú lenár scoileanna agus lucht stiúrtha na bhfóirne cheart an bhaois seo a chaitheamh i dtrapaisí. Chuir Meiriceánaigh i bponc mé agus gur náire don stát agus CLCG an tslí a caitear le Amhrán na bFiann. ‘Do the Irish people have any self-respect' arsa an Gael Meiriceánach liom. Ní aon dea -chómhra maith é go mbeadh droch iompair lé linn Amhrán na bhFiann. Ba chóir a mhiniú do daltaí scoile agus deireadh a chur leis an neamh-shuim agus droch iompar Gael. Geansaí Glas. Cé gur dea-scéal é is abhar mórtais do Ghaeil an bhua a bhí ag Sam Bennet ó Charraig na Siúire sa Tour de France. Bhuaidh sé an

Geansaí Glas. Is dócha gur chuir Seán Kelly comhairle air. N’fheadar an cheithre bhabtha a thug Seán an Geansaí Glas leis, Laoch. Ní ró-fhada óna chéille Seán agus Sam ó thaobh aistir, Ba ardú croí gaisce Sam agus an tslí a thug sé an lá leis. Laoch. Mo ghraidhn a chroí. An tOireachtas An t-am seo bliana a bheadh an tOireachtas ach níl againn ina ionad ach vioras gránna covet agus uimhir 3 anois. Mura n-iomparaíonn gach aon duine iad féin is uimhir a cúig a bheidh againn. Cinnte tá furmhór mhuintir na háite seo ag déanamh a ndícheall ach muna mbeidh feabhas ar chúrsaí beidh is dócha ceathair nó cúig. againn. Bheadh an scéal cruaidh faid is a bheidh toradh fónta. Fén bpobal atá an cinneadh a dhéanamh.
