Walnuts to Relieve Exam Stress

Stressed college students might benefit by adding walnuts to their diet before their next exam. A randomized clinical trial published in the journal Nutrients sought to investigate the effects of academic stress and daily walnut consumption on mental health, general well-being and gut microbiota in a group of 80 college students. Walnuts are full of nutrients that support brain and gut health, including omega-3 fatty acids,antioxidants,melatonin(sleep-inducing hormone), polyphenols, folate andvitamin E.

A new study may shed light on why some people gain more weight than others regardless of diet and activity levels. Led by researchers at the University of Copenhagen and published in the journal Microbiome, the study found that being overweight may also be related to the makeup of a person’s gut microbiome. The researchers studied 85 overweight adults and found that 40 percent of the participants had more Bacteroides in their gut microbiome, which are more effective at extracting nutrients from food, possibly causing leftover food to be stored as fat. Before they began their study, the researchers had hypothesized that a long digestive travel time would allow people to extract more energy from their food, but they found instead that people with shorter digestive travel times were actually the ones that extracted the most nutrition. Those with Bacteroides had shorter intestinal transit times and higher body weight.

Human-Grade Dog Foods Lead to Less Poop

Although human-grade foods for pets are commercially available, little research has been done on their health impacts. A 2021 study published in the Journal of Animal Science compared the fecal output of 12 dogs that ate one of three types of dog food: fresh, human-grade or extruded (kibble). The researchers found that the dogs that were fed fresh and human-grade food excreted about half as much as those that were fed classic, processed dog food. The human-grade foods were also found to be extremely digestible, and the dogs that ate them had to eat less food to maintain the same weight. There were many differences in fecal microbiota among the three diets, and the scientists stated that this was likely because of differences in ingredient source, nutrient concentrations and processing methods.

The University of South Australia researchers concluded that daily consumption of one half cup of walnuts improved self-reported mood and mental health status, metabolic biomarkers and sleep quality. The data also suggested that walnuts might counteract the negative effects of academic stress on the gut microbiota in women. The scientists noted that more research was needed with respect to males, as far fewer men participated in this study. They also cautioned that the placebo effect could have influenced results, as this was not a blind study.

Supplements That Help the Heart

A new study conducted by researchers at Brown University has identified certain supplements that may be beneficial for heart health. The meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology reviewed more than 884 studies on 27 types of micronutrient supplements among 883,627 participants and found strong evidence that omega-3 fatty acid, folicacid and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) are micronutrients that reduce cardiovascular risk. Omega-3 fatty acid was found to decrease mortality from cardiovascular disease; folic acid lowered stroke risk; and CoQ10 decreased all-cause mortality. Omega-6 fatty acid, L-arginine, L-citrulline, melatonin, magnesium, vitamin D, zinc, alpha-lipoic acid, catechin, flavanol, curcumin, genistein and quercetin also showed evidence of reducing cardiovascular risk.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), more than 100 U.S. crops depend on pollination by honeybees and other insects. Safeguarding commercial honeybee colonies is critical to food production as there has been an alarming population decline in wild species due to habitat loss, pesticide use and the climate crisis.

Recently, the USDA granted a two-year conditional license for a vaccine that protects honeybees from American foulbrood disease (AFB), a widespread, destructive ailment. The non-GMO inoculation will initially be available to commercial beekeepers and can be used in organic agriculture.

Prior to this booster, the only treatment method for AFB required beekeepers to burn the infected hives and equipment. According to vaccine manufacturer Dalan Animal Health, their vaccination is incorporated into the royal jelly, which worker bees feed to the queen. Once ingested, fragments of the treatment are deposited in the queen’s ovaries, providing developing larvae AFB immunity as they hatch.

Injured Whale Makes Long Journey

Each year, humpback whales migrate from the frigid waters near Alaska and western Canada to the warm waters of Mexico and Hawaii to breed and give birth. At the end of 2022, an extraordinary whale named Moon made the 3,100-mile journey from British Columbia to Hawaii with a broken back. The Canadian researchers that have been tracking Moon for the past decade discovered that the entire lower portion of her tail was bent into an unnatural “S” shape, presumably as a result of a boat strike.

Researchers speculate the whale made the arduous journey without the use of her tail, essentially using the breaststroke to make her migration. The journey left Moon emaciated when she reached Hawaii, having used up her fat stores and with no hope of recovery, given the scarce food resources in the tropical waters. Moon’s story serves as a cautionary tale for the devastating effects of ship collisions with whales. Boaters are reminded to treat whale areas like school zones and slow down to keep marine creatures safe.

Deciphering Egg Carton Labels

There are many egg choices in the grocery store with different labels— cage-free, free-range, pasture-raised, organic. Here is what these terms mean.

CAGE-FREE

Cage-free eggs are defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as eggs laid by hens that are able to roam vertically and horizontally in indoor spaces while having access to fresh food and water. Although this method of egg production is considered to be more humane than the longtime standard of battery cages, some cage-free farms may restrict outdoor grazing, and their hens’ nutrition may not be as goodas that of hens allowed outside.

Free-range hens follow the same rules as cage-free, with the added requirement of having access to the outdoors during their laying cycle. How much time the hens are permitted to spend outside is open to interpretation, although some animal welfare groups define it as at least six hours per day of outdoor access with at least two square feet of outdoor space per bird.

PASTURE-RAISED

This term isn’t defined by the USDA, but if eggs come with a third-party animal welfare certification seal, more robust standards of care have been applied. Certified Humane and American Humane Certified both expect pastureraised, egg-laying hens to have at least 108 square feet of pasture with live vegetation, and for those fields to be rotated so that fresh vegetation is always available. Having access to the outdoors year-round means they must also have access to a barn for protection from predators. Pasture-raised (and organic eggs described below) often have darker, yellower yolks and contain less cholesterol, which may be due to the continuous access to live vegetation and because they have more omega-3 fatty acids.

ORGANIC

Organic egg-laying hens must be provided with 100 percent organic feed without the use of pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. They must also be able to graze outside for at least 120 days per year and are given antibiotics only in the event of an infection.

ADDITIONAL TERMS

Local or locally produced eggs must originate less than 400 miles from the processing facility or within the state the eggs originated from and were processed in.

Vegetarian fed ensures that no animal byproducts were used to feed the hens. Grass fed is not defined by the USDA. No hormones is a misleading term, as the USDA has banned the use of hormones, and all eggs are hormone-free.

What should someone expect from working with you?

An extremely high level of dedication to helping my patients achieve better health and wellness, whether the illness is acute or chronic. My goal is to help all my patients achieve a level of healing where they will only require a minimum number of treatments to maintain their good health and well-being with the fewest medications or nutritional supplements.

What changes do you have planned for 2023?

I’m always looking to improve my treatments that will support and help heal my patients. I am very excited to be adding a treatment that puts healing energy into the blood, allowing it to e ectively eliminate viruses, bacteria and parasites. At the same time, it will improve the body’s ability to oxygenate cells, increase the ability of the immune system to maintain long-term health and well-being and decrease in ammation. I also will be introducing new acupuncture treatments that will amplify the body’s ability to heal from injuries as well as achieve deeper and longer lasting pain management.

Energy work is not a quick x. It is very important to understand that a problem that has been going on for a long time is not going to be resolved with only a few treatments.

Many of us have come across the term “plant-based eating”. Perhaps the regimen was recommended to us by a medical or nutritional professional. We may have read about it in a magazine or seen a documentary on the subject. Scientists around the globe have studied this lifestyle choice, and persuasive evidence is mounting that eating a preponderance of foods from plant sources has health merits.

e concept is attributed to T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D., the Jacob Gould Schurman professor emeritus of nutritional biochemistry at Cornell University. Based on his extensive research, he has advocated a low-fat, whole food, plant-based diet since the 1980s, and his commentary appears in Forks Over Knives, an in uential 2011 documentary on the subject that is still worth viewing.

Americans love their cheeseburgers and french fries, and breaking a habit that we thoroughly enjoy might be challenging at rst. While acute in ammation is a protective bodily response to heal infections and repair tissues, metabolic in ammation— or meta ammation—refers to chronic, systemic in ammation. According to a 2020 study published in e Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, metabolic in ammation is associated with increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease.

Numerous studies have explored the in ammatory and anti-in ammatory effects of foods. According to a 2021 article in Harvard Health Publishing, the following foods cause in ammation: re ned carbohydrates like white bread; fried foods like french fries; sodas and other sugary drinks; red meat; processed meat, including hot dogs, sausage and cold cuts; and margarine, shortening and lard. Conversely, the best anti-in ammatory foods are tomatoes; olive oil; leafy, green vegetables such as spinach, kale and collards; nuts like almonds, walnuts, pistachios and pecans; and fruit such as apples, strawberries, blueberries, cherries and oranges. Omega-3 fatty acidrich sh like salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines are also recommended for their anti-in ammatory properties.

Environmental Sustainability

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, total greenhouse gas emissions from global livestock represents 14.5 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Cattle raised for both beef and milk are the animal species responsible for the most emissions, which include methane and represent about 65 percent of the livestock sector’s emissions. Industrially produced meat is also a leading contributor of global deforestation and habitat loss as large swaths of the Amazon and other land masses are cleared for cattle ranching and to produce animal feed.

The Cellular Magic of Compassion

Dropping o a homemade treat on a neighbor’s porch or going out of our way for a stranger can make the recipient’s day, but the giver also gets a boost. anks to a scienti cally proven cascade of feel-good chemicals like oxytocin, serotonin and dopamine, performing regular acts of kindness forges new neural pathways in the brain, amping up our cognitive ability while reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Allowing ourselves the full range of human emotions without judgement, giving our bodies that much-needed extra hour of sleep, buying fresh owers for our o ce and crediting ourselves for daily accomplishments are all easy ways to turn on endorphins.

e more joyful we can be in our own skins, the more likely we are to beam that joy out into the world. Being both giver and receiver to ourselves blesses us with an understanding of why expressing benevolence is vital to the planet. “ e more you are motivated by love, the more fearless and free your action will be,” said the Dalai Lama, exemplifying how giving in itself is the greatest reward.

What are the key components of the Wahls Protocol?

e protocol is a lifestyle that supports the steadily improving health of everyone, not just MS patients. It focuses on eating more vegetables and fruits, and ensuring su cient protein. It reduces or eliminates added sugars, ultra-processed foods, dairy and gluten-containing grains. While the diet may get more complex, a great place for anyone to start is including more non-starchy vegetables, less processed food and more meals cooked at home. e protocol also includes lifestyle interventions, such as time in nature, meditation, mindfulness and physical activity. Even for patients who are wheelchair-bound, going from chair to bed, exercise will improve their quality of life. It is a way of approaching living that creates a more healthy, nurturing environment.

What excites you most about your current MS study?

Seeing what happens with brain volume and quality of life. We hypothesize that lifestyle changes will get the rate of brain volume loss to match that of healthy aging.

MS patients have brains that are shrinking three times faster than in healthy aging. is increases the risk for anxiety, depression and early cognitive decline. Our study will be the largest and longest dietary intervention study done in the setting of relapsingremitting MS. We are recruiting people ages 18 to 70 diagnosed with MS. During the participants’ three visits, they will complete surveys, conduct functional tests, provide blood and saliva samples, and get an MRI. e participants will be divided into three groups. One will follow a modi ed paleo diet; the second an olive oil ketogenic, time-restricted diet; and the third will be the control group. We are optimistic that the rst two groups will get to healthy aging, and the control arm will likely improve, as well.

What is metabolic exibility, and how do you improve it?

Fasting improves metabolic exibility— the ability to switch between protein, fat and glucose for fuel. Fasting for two days increases stem cells. While periodic fasting is bene cial for metabolism and regenerative processes, it is hard to sustain because of our strong biologic drive to eat and dislike for being hungry. An easier dietary pattern to sustain long term is time-restricted eating in a window of six to eight hours. Our current clinical trial incorporates this eating pattern.

Is there anything you know now that you wish you knew when you were getting started?

How important managing stress is. When I was diagnosed with MS, I could tell that stress made my symptoms worse. I feel I would have done much better had I maintained my meditation. I am fond of hormetic stress, that “sweet spot” where stress could be bene cial. Without stress, our bones and muscles disappear. Without the stress of having to learn, our brain disappears. We just need an equal measure of relaxation and recovery.

What is your takeaway on lifestyle modi cations and multiple sclerosis?

You can reverse symptoms of MS and restore function. You can have a great and meaningful life at your level of function. It is important to nd joy, gratitude and purpose in life as it’s unfolding now, and doing so will help with the energy and commitment needed to do the work that can change the direction of your healing journey.

Loving Our Kidneys

EDIBLE ALLIES, INTEGRATIVE TREATMENTS AND LIFESTYLE TIPS

Our kidneys are prodigious multitaskers. Through the production of urine, they filter toxins, excrete waste and balance bodily fluids. They also produce certain hormones that regulate blood pressure and aid in other vital functions. While the kidneys don’t usually fail all at once, their effectiveness can deteriorate slowly over years, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is most often the result of uncontrolled diabetes or high blood pressure. Simple blood and urine tests help physicians evaluate kidney function and diagnose CKD, which is divided into ve stages. e rst three stages are mild or moderate, and can respond well to lifestyle

modi cations and alternative interventions, while the more severe, later stages become increasingly more complex to treat and may require dialysis to mechanically perform the kidneys’ functions. In endstage CKD, many patients are relegated to dialysis treatments several times a month to prevent the accumulation of deadly toxins, while many wait and hope for a lifesaving transplant.

e U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that one in seven adults are diagnosed annually. Most of these 37 million Americans do not feel ill or notice symptoms until they are in advanced stages of the disease, which is why people with diabetes and high blood

pressure should be tested regularly and take steps to protect their kidneys. Managing CKD requires a multilevel approach, including lifestyle and diet changes, use of prescribed medications, avoidance of kidney-harming toxins like alcohol and cigarettes, and close supervision by a doctor that specializes in kidney disease (nephrologist) to ensure that other prescribed medications and over-the-counter or herbal treatments are safe.

Integrative and holistic approaches may be of help for those in earlier stages of kidney disease or for those striving to prevent it. “I have been really blessed to be connected with a global team of people who, like myself and everyone I work with, understand that kidney disease is treatable, and the recovery of kidney function is actually possible,” says Fiona Chin, an Australia-based naturopath and co-founder of KidneyCoach.com. Chin adds that she and her colleagues have witnessed signi cant patient improvement from tailored diet and lifestyle regimens during and a er diagnosis, especially when root causes are addressed.

e Kidney-Friendly Kitchen

Promising research published last year in Frontiers of Pharmacology shows that combining Western treatments and Traditional Chinese Medicine can have a positive impact on even late-stage renal failure. Isaac Eliaz, M.D., an integrative medical doctor and founder of Amitabha Medical Clinic, in Santa Rosa, California, says, “Preventing and reducing chronic in ammation is a critical aspect of minimizing CKD risk. An anti-in ammatory diet, moderate exercise program and attention to stress reduction all work to decrease the proin ammatory milieu.” He also highlights the importance of protecting and boosting bene cial gut bacteria, which can be addressed with supplements or prebiotic foods like garlic, leeks, onions and jicama.

Piling whole, plant-plentiful goodness onto our plates and embracing an alkaline diet are key measures in the prevention of CKD by lowering the risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Mayo Clinic o ers renal-supportive recipes with fruits, vegetables and grains like quinoa. It also

recommends avoiding many packaged and processed foods that have phosphorus added to prolong shelf life and enhance taste, such as convenience foods, sodas and sports drinks, avor-enhanced meats and processed cheeses.

Jarrod Cooper, ND, founder of Advanced Functional Medicine, underscores the importance of nixing pro-in ammatory foods such as sugars, re ned carbohydrates, excessive red meat, trans and saturated fats, ca eine and alcohol. Alcohol negatively impacts liver function, and over time reduces blood ow to the kidneys, leading to CKD, he says. at extra glass of wine can also crank up blood pressure, a sure re path to renal compromise.

Kidney-loving fruits, according to Cleveland Urology Associates, include pineapple, cranberries, red grapes and apples, all of which pack an anti-in ammatory punch.

Sodium: Friend or Foe?

Chin notes that although salt is essential for nerve and muscle function, a balancing of uids in the blood and healthy blood pressure, not all salt is bene cial. “Salt is a healthy thing to have in your diet in moderation and in the right form,” she asserts. “Table salt is manufactured salt that is stripped of its natural minerals. During salt processing, the balance of sodium to other valuable minerals is lost. Most salt companies also add anti-caking agents that contain aluminum.” Chin recommends good-quality Himalayan salt or sea salt that also contains traces of other natural minerals.

Various types of seaweeds, like dulce, nori and kombu, are natural sources of sodium that are safe for people that do not have kidney disease. ey o er signi cant bene ts for in ammation reduction, blood sugar balance and heart health, including lower blood pressure. Sea vegetables have also been shown to help reduce the risk of kidney stones by inhibiting the formation of calcium oxalate

BLACKENED SALMON TACOS

YIELD: 8 SERVINGS

4 salmon llets, 4 oz each

2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil

8 small corn tortillas

CILANTRO LIME CAULIFLOWER RICE

YIELD: 6 SERVINGS

1 head cauli ower, chopped (or 6 cups)

1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

2 garlic cloves

¼ tsp pepper

¼ tsp salt

3 Tbsp fresh lime juice

¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped

Rinse the cauli ower and pat dry. Chop into orets, then pulse in a food processor or blender. Alternatively, the cauli ower can be

le whole and grated with a box grater. In a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Sauté garlic for a few minutes until fragrant and lightly browned. Increase heat to medium high and add cauli ower. Sauté about 5 minutes.

Transfer to a bowl and toss with salt, pepper, lime juice and cilantro.

1½ tsp paprika

1½ tsp cumin

1½ tsp dark brown sugar

½ tsp garlic powder

½ tsp onion powder

THE SLAW:

2 cups broccoli slaw

2 cups shredded purple cabbage

1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

3 Tbsp mayonnaise

2 Tbsp cilantro, chopped

2 small jalapeños, seeds removed and chopped

1 Tbsp lime juice

In a small bowl, combine and mix the paprika, cumin, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, chili powder and

black pepper. Sprinkle over the esh side of the sh, reserving about 1 teaspoon for the slaw.

Preheat a medium skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil and coat the pan evenly. Place the salmon in the preheated pan, esh side down, and allow it to sizzle for 4 minutes to allow it to brown. Flip it to the skin side and cover the pan for the last 4 minutes or until it reaches the desired temperature.

Meanwhile, combine the slaw ingredients in a large bowl and mix well. Heat the corn tortillas. Fill each with about 2 ounces of salmon and about ¼ cup of slaw.

Updates from the Local Yoga Community

In an unexpected way, the pandemic introduced yoga to the masses and opened new avenues to be explored, as it closed the doors to many beloved studios. Since then, with the past few years bringing all sorts of transitions and uncertainty, it is not surprising that many have turned to yoga and meditation to alleviate anxiety. New styles and trends will be gracing local studios this year, and many techniques and o erings can help us stay sane and grounded no matter what is in store from here.

An Evolving Landscape

While some local businesses have closed their doors permanently since 2020, several studios have opened since that time, a testament to the resiliency of yogis in the region with a love for this time-honored practice. Recent openings include Lilac Soul Yoga in Lagrangeville, Viale Yoga in Bedford Hills, Hastings Yoga, opened last month in Hastings-On-Hudson, and Rooted Yoga in the village of Wappingers Falls, slated to open within the next few weeks.

“Last year, the time seemed right to open a new studio,” shares Toni Feimer,

owner of Lilac Soul. Feimer, who previously owned Prema Yoga Studio , explained that yoga has helped her handle stress and aches due to Lyme disease, and she wanted to help others experience the benefits at an affordable price.

Several studio owners have transitioned to new venues as well. Yoga Haven, which originally had two locations in lower Westchester, was forced to close during the pandemic, but owner Betsy Kase now collaborates with Ste Nossen to o er yoga at her School of Dance and Center for Movement, in White Plains. Al Bingham, a beloved teacher in Croton, closed his brick-and-mortar studio—Encourage Yoga—in 2020, and now o ers yoga classes and retreats online. Additionally, Fire y Yoga moved to a new location, in Fishkill.

Still many others, such as RedTail Power Yoga, in Hopewell Junction, which celebrated its h anniversary last month, have weathered challenges and continue to adapt to changing times—some even with expanded services. RedTail’s owner Maureen Benedict enthuses, “Be on the

lookout for our new Runners’ and Hikers’ Club plus many local events o ering opportunities for personal growth.”

Beginners Welcome

While it can o en feel intimidating to begin something new, the studio owners we spoke to seem to be on a mission, to not only make everyone feel at home, but also incentivize new participants. Cate Bartilucci, owner of Luna Power Yoga, in Mahopac, describes their New Member Intro Special, including access to one week of unlimited yoga with free Lululemon mat rental, as something that is really getting noticed. Several studios o ering speci c classes geared toward rst-timers are also seeing increased numbers. At Back2Health Yoga, in Wappingers Falls, their Beginner’s Yoga is a great match for someone just starting out.

“ e hardest part about yoga is walking into your rst class,” explains Christine M. Dodge, owner of Baldwin Place’s Putnam Yoga. “But once you do, you begin to realize that it is all about listening to your body and what it wants in the present moment.” Benedict (RedTail) adds, “Come as you are, and see what’s possible! Our expert instructors and ‘no-levels’ classes will meet you where you are.”

Current Trends

“Gentle yoga seems to be trending and has been since before the pandemic,” notes Betsy Ceva, co-owner of Shamani Yoga. “It seems there are many elders/ retirees who are committed to maintaining healthy, strong bodies through yoga, but wish to avoid a vigorous practice.” Chris Glover, owner of Sacred Spirit Yogaand Healing Arts Center, in Dobbs Ferry, concurs—describing their Gentle Yoga as encouraging mindfulness while promoting exibility, strengthening and relaxation. Amenia Yoga – A Place for Wellness, in the town of Amenia, is introducing a new class called Slow & Steady, beginning March 7. “It is perfect for anyone that wants to move at a slower pace,” shares owner Sarah Wallace.

Along with gentle styles, many studios are fostering a “yoga for every body” environment, with more folks feeling

accepted into the community regardless of any perceived limitations. At several studios, such as Tula Yoga for Wellness, in Brewster, poses are made accessible for everyone through the use of props and modi cations. Lilac Soul caters to all body types—especially larger bodies— rsttime students, and those recovering from injuries or illnesses. Deb Proscher, owner of Blue Lotus Yoga & Healing, in Dover Plains, adds, “We want our studio to be a place where everyone feels welcomed and supported no matter their age or ability.”

More Kundalini classes are popping up lately, and it is a style now recognized as a means to self-awareness. According to the International Journal of Yoga erapy, it may also help ease stress and anxiety, improve cognitive functioning and boost self-appreciation. Classes can be found locally through Bedford Post’s Golden Prana Kundalini Yoga, now held at e Yoga Lo , and Blue Lotus o ers classes on a monthly basis, too. Golden Prana’s owner Carrie Hari Sangat Kane describes it as unique, saying, “At rst glance, it may not look like any yoga you’ve seen or practiced. It works on physical and subtle levels to help balance the mind, body and emotions.”

“ Trending overall right now is a return to health and well-being,” observes Benedict (RedTail). “We’ve never stopped delivering strength of mind through the physical practice of yoga, so it is inspiring to see many people returning to themselves now along the way.”

Honoring Self-Discovery and Well-Being

“We’re de nitely seeing a renewed interest in the many bene ts of yoga and the awareness yoga brings us to listen to our bodies,” says Dodge (Putnam). “Yoga is so much more than the poses we do on the mat.” Owner of PranaMoon Yoga, in Peekskill, Ellen Forman, agrees and tells us she creates a nurturing environment for students to explore healing and creative arts. “Our space is dedicated to encourage self-expression, spiritual awakening, emotional growth and physical unfolding.”

Vitalah Simon, owner of YogaShine, in Valhalla, describes her outlook: “We o er you the opportunity to go deeper in your

yoga practice, to delve into the more subtle bene ts of asanas, breathing, and meditation.” Bartilucci (Luna Power) shares a similar approach, saying she aims to guide individuals as they listen to what their body has to say, whether in moments of stillness or movement. “Learning to care for and respect our own bodies is fundamental to experiencing the unity that is yoga,” adds Simon (YogaShine).

Online Classes Still Abound

Virtual classes and workshops reach more people and o er a greater pool of presenters, and there are still numerous opportunities to participate in this way. “People continue to prefer Zoom classes for the time being,” reports Simon (YogaShine). “We have students from all over the world, and Zoom makes this possible. Also, locals are glad they don’t have to navigate unpredictable weather to attend.”

Workshops from the Yoga Teachers Association (YTA) were strictly online through 2021 and have slowly progressed to being hybrid. YTA has o ered workshops with Dianne Bondy, from Canada; Nina Crist, from Costa Rica; Tias Little, from New Mexico; and recently, James Knight, from California. “Using an online format has actually allowed us to connect with more experts from near and far to lead our workshops,” explains Lorraine Burton, YTA Treasurer.

Yoga for Special Populations

Classes focused on relieving stress are paramount, along with trauma-informed series, Yoga for Recovery and options for those with chronic conditions.

Donna Bernstein, owner of Laughter Yoga, serving Westchester County, o ers classes for people with special needs and seniors, among others. Lilac Soul; Beth Bierko Yoga, in Yorktown Heights; and several others o er Chair Yoga geared toward seniors and those recovering from injuries. Look for classes curated for the over-50 crowd at YogaShine and a Back Care Basics class at Beth Bierko’s. Amenia Yoga specializes in Yoga for Osteoporosis.

Still Mind Yoga, operated under Integrated Peace Arts, in Scarsdale, structures its activities to support yoga teachers following post-pandemic losses.

ey also o er classes for children with special needs, yoga for thyroid conditions, and more. YogaShine specializes in serving children on the autism spectrum and their parents, providing dance/movement/yoga therapy.

Tula Yoga is coordinating clinics/programs with local companies and corporations. ey are also working with local athletic teams to develop yoga skills that enhance performance. Luna Power honors rst responders, educators, mental health professionals and those in the military/veterans with a discounted monthly unlimited package, while Blue Lotus has reduced rates for seniors and children.

Children and teen classes are also more prevalent than they used to be. Studios o ering classes to young and growing yogis include Blue Lotus: Budding Buddhas Kids Yoga; in New Rochelle; Yogashine; Still Mind; and Nossen’s School of Dance. It is important that kids learn tools for managing stress, plus mindfulness, yoga and meditation can help with concentration, emotional reactivity and also instill positivity, which enhances overall resilience.

Private and Customized Instruction

Natural remedies and healing therapies are not just for humans, they also help pets overcome illness and maintain optimal health. Used properly, plants, herbs, essential oils and other natural, non-toxic substances can complement and o en replace drugs and other chemical agents. Here are seven healthful solutions.

Coconut oil is a source of medium-chain triglycerides, which bene t cognitive function. It is also rich in lauric acid, a powerful antimicrobial agent for yeast infections, allergies and skin conditions (when used topically). Feed dogs and cats onequarter teaspoon of 100 percent organic, coldpressed, human-grade coconut oil for every 10 pounds of the pet’s body weight twice daily.

Natural Remedies for Pets

SEVEN NON-TOXIC TREATMENTS FOR COMMON AILMENTS

Manuka honey is an all-natural, e ective remedy. Clinical trials have shown that it can eradicate hundreds of strains of bacteria, including certain antibiotic-resistant varieties. A Unique Manuka Factor rating of 10 or higher is recommended for medicinal use. Manuka honey can be used to manage resistant ear and skin infections, as well as large, super cial wounds that cannot be closed surgically. Given orally, manuka honey is effective at addressing H. pylori, the bacteria that contributes to gastrointestinal irritation, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and excessive E. coli blooms in animals with dysbiosis.

Aloe vera has multiple applications. To reduce a dog’s discomfort from skin irritations, cuts or wounds, clean the a ected area

and apply the raw, inner gel of the plant to provide a soothing e ect. For constipation, a small amount of whole leaf aloe vera juice, a natural laxative, can be added to a dog’s food. Inner leaf aloe juice, which doesn’t contain the skin, helps heal gastric ulcers, colitis and leaky gut.

Lavender oil is used in aromatherapy to help calm nervous or anxious animals. For a dog with noise phobia, place a few drops on their collar or bedding before a stressor occurs, if possible, or diffuse the oil around the house for a calming e ect. Lavender oil can also be bene cial for treating hot spots. Add a few drops to manuka honey or coconut oil and apply a er disinfecting the wound twice daily.

Oregano oil contains potent antibacterial and anti-parasitic properties. It can be used to calm itchy skin, soothe irritated gums and assist in balancing a dog’s gut ora. It is also a bene cial herb for dogs with kennel cough or recurrent infections. Oregano oil should always be diluted before using it in or on pets.

Ginger is a widely used, non-toxic, non-irritating remedy for soothing tummy troubles. It can be given orally or used in oil form by adding a few drops to a carrier oil, such as coconut or olive oil, and massaging the mixture into the skin on the pet’s belly. Alternatively, add small amounts of freshly grated ginger or the dry herb to a tasty meatball or other yummy treat. Use no more than onesixteenth teaspoon for kitties, one-eighth teaspoon for small dogs under 10 pounds, one-quarter teaspoon for medium-sized

dogs, one-half teaspoon for large dogs and three-quarter to one teaspoon for giant breeds. Give the ginger one to three times a day, as needed.

Chamomile is an e ective calming agent that has analgesic and anti-spasmodic properties and is bene cial in soothing the central nervous system. Use a cool chamomile tea bag against a wound, irritation or bug bite on the dog’s or cat’s skin to provide a soothing e ect. Something else to con-

sider is a soothing chamomile a er-bath rinse. Add ve chamomile tea bags to two quarts of very hot water and steep until the water is cool for up to three hours to allow the maximum amount of polyphenols to release into the water. Remove the tea bags and pour the rinse over a freshly bathed pet from the neck down. Massage into the skin and do not rinse.

SWEET LULLABY BETTER SLEEP FOR CHILDREN

Sleep is essential for both survival and the ability to thrive, yet as children’s schedules get busier and they spend more time in front of screens, their average sleep time o en decreases. While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that kids between the ages of 6 and 12 get nine to 12 hours of sleep per night for optimal health, they’re regularly getting less, and about 15 to 25 percent of youngsters and adolescents have trouble falling and staying asleep.

In a recent study published in e Lancet, researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine found that children that get less than nine hours of sleep per night have notable di erences in areas of the brain that in uence memory, intelligence and well-being compared to those that sleep more than nine hours. According to researchers, such insu ciencies in early adolescence can lead to long-lasting neurocognitive consequences.

Why Kids Aren’t Sleeping

Anna Esparham, M.D., FAAP, an integrative medical expert with the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommends that

parents look for clues as to why their children can’t sleep, including stress, increased screen time and less physical activity. However, there may be other underlying issues.

A lesser-known culprit that may contribute to a child’s compromised sleep is impaired mouth syndrome (IMS), a term coined by dentist Felix Liao, a certied airway-centered mouth doctor and past-president of the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine. “Most people, including many dentists, don’t realize the in uence that the mouth has on the body,” he says. “ e mouth is the portal to the inside. With impaired mouth syndrome, the child can still chew, smile and talk, but the body’s health can be compromised.”

While birth trauma, concussion and viruses can precipitate mouth breathing, and chronic allergies o en exacerbate matters, immature swallowing can set o a cascade of problems. e mouth is a critical infrastructure for proper breathing, circulation, digestion, energy and sleep. IMS occurs when jaw development is insu cient, thereby giving rise to numerous di culties, such as a narrower airway, which can cause

hypoxia, or low levels of oxygen. Liao notes that poor sleep quality can also lead to learning and behavioral problems.

“Breastfeeding stimulates bone growth and jaw development through the tongue’s instinctive action and ideally enables a child to have a mature swallow by age 2,” says Amy Dayries-Ling, DMD, FAIHM, a national spokesperson for the American Dental Association. In her book Solve Your Sleep: Get to the Core of Your Snore for Better Health, Dayries-Ling connects the dots between the vital role of the tongue during breastfeeding, balanced stimulation from the vagus nerve and bene cial spaces between milk teeth for a well-developed dental arch.

Correcting Structural Problems

From a holistic perspective, improperly working muscles of the tongue, throat and face or a compromised jawbone can foster a predisposition to a number of seemingly unrelated conditions, including

dental problems, teeth grinding, asthma, bedwetting, attention-de cit hyperactivity disorder, poor growth, swollen tonsils and pediatric obstructive sleep apnea. Dayries-Ling recommends that parents seek out a myofunctional therapist that can help retrain muscles and free up the airway. Building an integrative team is vital, including a dentist trained to address structural issues.

As a certi ed, airway-centered mouth doctor, New Jersey-based holistic dentist Nemie Sirilan understands the link between sleep deprivation and airway obstructions. She uses 3D scans and thorough examinations to identify craniofacial abnormalities and customize treatments that correct structural anomalies.

“When I examine young patients, I want to see how baby teeth are forming, whether they have a tongue-tie and how their upper and lower jaws are positioned, to see if they have some kind of bad bite. ese are all telltale signs of airway obstruction,” Sirilan explains, adding that another common indicator of breathing di culties is the

wearing down of tooth enamel that results from persistent teeth grinding

Sirilan recommends that parents consult an airway-centered mouth doctor as soon as possible before other complications arise, noting that these problems are o en easily corrected with customized corrective appliances, as well as collaborative consultations with other practitioners, including functional doctors, nutritionists, chiropractors and physical therapists to treat the whole person.

Consume more whole foods. Consuming more whole foods over processed foods will have a ton of health benefits. Whole foods include meat, fish, chicken, eggs, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, seeds and nuts. Ditch processed condiments by seasoning with herbs, spices, alliums, ginger and citrus.

3Increase water intake. Simply increasing your water intake can improve all aspects of your health, and you may even notice an improvement in digestion, performance, concentration and mood.

4Reduce sugar consumption. Try replacing sugary drinks with unsweetened teas, plain seltzer or fruit-infused water, and replace some of your favorite sweet snacks with dark chocolate, fruit or other healthy snacks. Including more sweet vegetables in your meals may help reduce sweet cravings.

5Introduce more whole grains. Swap out white rice for brown rice or quinoa, or replace white bread and white pasta with minimally processed whole-grain breads and pastas.

6Cook with healthy fats. Use healthy fats like coconut oil, avocado oil and olive oil to improve the nutritional value of your meals and avoid the health risks associated with highly processed oils like common vegetable oils.

Deep Breathing. Find a quiet place to sit with both feet planted on the floor and hands resting on top of your thighs. Take a slow, deep breath in through the nose and slowly out through the mouth. Focus only on your breath and nothing else. Repeat this cycle 10 times to help decrease cortisol levels, slow heart rate, lower blood pressure and quickly ground your energy.

Adult Coloring Books. By concentrating on the process of coloring, you can activate different areas in the brain that will help you to relax and recharge. Active Release Techniques (ART):

A patented, state of the art so tissue system/ movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. ese conditions all have one important thing in common: they are o en a result of overused muscles.

Acupuncture: An ancient Oriental technique that stimulates the body’s ability to sustain and balance itself, based on the theory that an electromagnetic life-force (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”) is channeled in a continuous ow throughout the body via a network of ‘meridians.’ Disease is understood as an imbalance in the meridian system.

Diagnosis of an imbalance is made by “reading” the pulse, face, tongue and body energy. To correct it, a practitioner inserts acupuncture needles at speci c points along the meridians to stimulate or disperse the ow of life force. Acupuncture principles include the yin and yang polarities and the associations of the ve elements of re, earth, metal, water and wood with bodily organs.

Counseling / Psychotherapy: ese terms encompass a broad range of practitioners, from career counselors, who o er advice and information, to psychotherapists, who treat depression, stress, addiction and emotional issues. Formats can vary from individual counseling to group therapy. In addition to verbal counseling techniques, some holistic therapists may use bodywork, ritual, energy healing and other alternative modalities as part of their practice.

Craniosacral erapy (CST): A manual therapeutic procedure to remedy distortions in the structure and function of the craniosacral mechanism—the brain and spinal cord, the bones of the skull, the sacrum and interconnected membranes. Craniosacral work is based upon two major premises: that the bones of the skull can be manipulated, because they never completely fuse; and that the pulse of the cerebrospinal uid can be balanced by a practitioner trained to detect variations in that pulse. CST is used to treat chronic pain, migraine headaches, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), ear and eye problems, balance problems, learning di culties, dyslexia and hyperactivity.

Dance / Movement erapy: A method of expressing thoughts and feelings through movement, developed during the 1940s. Participants, guided by trained therapists, are encouraged to move freely, sometimes to music. Dance/movement therapy can be practiced by people of all ages to promote selfesteem and gain insight into their own emotional problems, but is also used to help those with serious mental and physical disabilities. In wide use in the United States, this modality is becoming established around the world.

Deep Tissue Work: A technique of stretching and moving the connective tissue that envelops the muscles (fascia) in order to lengthen and balance the body along its natural, vertical axis. Distortions of the connective tissue may be caused by internal reactions and compensations due to accidents, emotional tension or past-unreleased traumas. Deep tissue massage works to detoxify tissue by helping to remove accumulated lactic acid and other waste products from the muscles. e therapy is used to ease or eliminate chronic muscular pain, help with injury rehabilitation and reduce in ammatory pain caused by ailments such as arthritis and tendonitis.

Dentistry (Holistic): Regards the mouth as a microcosm of the entire body. e oral structures and the whole body are seen as a unit. Holistic dentistry o en incorporates such methods as homeopathy, biocompatibility testing and nutritional counseling. Most holistic dentists emphasize wellness and preventive care, while avoiding (and o en recommending the removal of silver-mercury llings.

Detoxi cation: e practice of resting, cleansing and nourishing the body from the inside out. According to some holistic practitioners, accumulated toxins can drain the body of energy and make it more susceptible to disease. Detoxi cation techniques may include fasts, special diets, sauna sweats, body wrapping, ionized foot baths and colon cleansing.

Doula: A woman who supports an expectant mother through pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum period. Studies indicate that support in labor has profound bene ts, including shorter labor, less desire for pain medication, lower rate of Caesarian delivery and more ease in initiation of breast-feeding.

Emotional Freedom Technique

(EFT): A self-help procedure founded by Gary Craig that combines ngertip tapping of key acupuncture meridian points while focusing on an emotional issue or health challenge. Structural Integration

(Rol ng): A hands-on technique for deep tissue manipulation of the myofascial system, which is composed of the muscles and the connective tissue, or fascia, in order to restore the body’s natural alignment and sense of integration. As the body is released from old patterns and postures, the range and freedom of physical and emotional expression increases. Rol ng can help ease pain and chronic stress, enhance neurological functioning, improve posture and restore exibility.

Rubenfeld Synergy Method: Combines touch, talk and compassionate listening in a dynamic system for the integration of body, mind, emotions and spirit. rough gentle touch and verbal sharing, each of these four levels can be accessed simultaneously, releasing pain and fears held in the body/mind. is method facilitates pain management, increased ease of movement, improved body image and self-esteem, and recovery from physical and emotional trauma.

Shamanism: An ancient healing tradition, which believes that loss of power is the real source of illness and that all healing includes the spiritual dimension. Shamanic healing usually involves induction into an altered state of consciousness and journeying into the spirit world to regain personal power and to access the powers of nature and of teachers. Shamanic healing may be taken literally or employed symbolically, but in or out of its cultural context, the tradition can be both self-empowering and self-healing.

Shiatsu: e most widely known form of acupressure, Shiatsu is a Japanese word meaning nger pressure. e technique applies varying degrees of pressure to balance the life energy that ows through speci c pathways, or meridians, in the body. Used to release tension and strengthen weak areas in order to facilitate even circulation, cleanse cells and improve the function of vital organs. Shiatsu may be used to help diagnose, prevent and relieve many chronic and acute conditions that manifest on both physical and emotional levels.

Spiritual Healing / Counseling:

Practiced in two forms. In one, the healer uses thought or touch to align his or her spiritual essence with that of the client. e healer works to either balance the spiritual eld or shi the

perceptual base of the client to create harmony between mind and body and draw the client into the active presence of Divine Spirit. In the other, the healer transforms healing energy into a vibrational frequency that the client can receive and comfortably assimilate, reminding the person’s intuitive core of its inherent healing ability.

Sports massage: A specialized eld of massage, employed to minimize the risk of injury, tend to sports injuries that do occur, and assist in achieving optimum performance.

Swedish massage: e most commonly practiced form of massage in Western countries. Swedish massage integrates ancient Oriental techniques with principles of anatomy and physiology. Practitioners rub, knead, pummel, brush and tap the client’s muscles. Swedish massage is widely practiced; thus, practitioners vary widely in training, techniques and session lengths.

Tai chi & Qigong: Qigong and Tai chi combine movement, meditation and breath regulation to enhance the ow of vital energy (qi or chi, pronounced “chee”) in the body, improve circulation and enhance immune function. Qigong traces its roots to traditional Chinese medicine. Tai chi was originally a selfdefense martial art descended from qigong and employed to promote inner peace and calm.

Tantra: Has emerged as a modern spiritual path of embodied consciousness, with roots in ancient Hindu and Buddhist traditions. Tantra views the ‘spiritual’ as being directly present within the ‘physical’ and respects sensory experience as a vehicle for accessing higher states of awareness. Tantric practices balance the chakras (energy centers) and can contribute to a sense of presence, intimacy and ful llment in all aspects of living.

ai Massage: A form of body therapy that incorporates gentle rocking motions, rhythmic compression along the body’s energy lines and passive stretching to stimulate the free ow of energy, break up blockages and help restore general well-being. One of the branches of Traditional ai Medicine (TTM), ai massage is performed on a oor mat, with the client dressed in lightweight, comfortable clothes. No oils are used. ai massage aids exibility, inner organ massage, blood oxygenation and quieting of the mind.

ermography ( ermal Imaging):

A diagnostic technique that uses an infrared camera to measure temperature variations on the surface of the body, producing images that reveal sites of in ammation and abnormal tissue growth. In ammation is recognized as the earliest stage of nearly all major health challenges. See ads pages 35 & 55.

Trigger point/Myotherapy: A massage technique used to relieve pain, similar to Neuro Muscular erapy (NMT). Practitioners apply pressure to speci c ‘trigger points’ on the body—tender, congested spots of muscle tissue that may radiate pain to other areas—in order to release tension and spasms. Treatment decreases the swelling and sti ness associated with muscular pain and increases range of motion.

Yoga: Practical application of the ancient Indian Vedic teachings. e word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj which means “union” or “to join,” and refers to the joining of a person’s physical, mental and spiritual elements. e goal of good health is accomplished through a combination of techniques, including physical exercises called asanas (or postures), controlled breathing, relaxation, meditation and diet and nutrition. Although yoga is not meant to cure speci c diseases or ailments directly, it has been found e ective in treating many physical ailments.

Individuals of every age and physical condition can bene t from the regular practice of yoga, which has been proved to enhance exibility, strength, stamina and concentration. Using a combination of asanas, or postures, and breathing techniques, yoga works to induce deep relaxation and reduce stress, tone the body and organs, increase vitality and improve circulation and energy ow. Upli ing and meditative, yoga can be applied as a spiritual practice, as well.
