record breaking day for chapman
Matthew Chapman this weekend willrunoutforthe409thtimeinthe yellow and black surpassing the Garth Willoughby’s 408 game recordwhichhasstoodsince2018.
There is an old saying that football doesn't build character, it just eliminates weak ones. This is why Chappy has reached this amazing feat. His fierce commitment, relentless effort, uncompromising approach, team first demeanour and discipline in all areas of his game are inspiring to his team and club. Not only does he shape the way his teammates play with his voice, attack on the ball and opponent, training intensity, weekly preparation, positive and caring attitude, underpinned by an
unequivocal pride in his own performance He will leave this legacy well beyond his own playing days. Loved by peers, respected by his opposition, and admired by his club he epitomises everything good aboutNorthGambier
Youmightnotfindhisnameonbest and fairest honour boards or on mark of the year highlight reels, but ask any player who has played alongside him - Who is your most trusted teammate? Who do you want beside you? Who do you love playing with? The answer would be MatthewChapman!

Well, we have done one of our Millicenttrips, sothatisapositive, as was the warm fire in the shed the fat snags as usual A few couldn't come up after Wobbles 60 celebrations Friday night, but for those that got there, given the conditions, many chose to play andgethometothewarmth.
Our only win came in the U18s, with Kevs boys getting off to a great start before the ball got slippery Best players were regulars in Zayne Young, Angus Allen, Aaron Dally, Trae Hamilton, Deacon Ilsley and Richie Kinyabugma.
The U14s got Millicent stirred up, having arrived at the oval before they did. Unfortunately, that just spurred the fast improving young saints on to a convincing win Awards were given to Ethan Brook, Sam Baron, Charels Waters, Cody Blanck and Mason Rogers.
Our U16s didn't handle the wet track, and while they toiled away all day, their inconsistent season continued Best players were Aaron Dally, Cooper Turner, Kade Allen, Ben Braithwaite and Iowani Coleman. With such players we arehopingforbetterresultsasthe seasongoeson.
The reserves game was very entertaining, particularly for those following the South Easts bestressiesreporter,AidanCurtis, who put on a real show, including 2 goals – perhaps he has been playing out of position? We left too much too late, but the boys willbehuntingforawininthenext couple of weeks Best players were named Tyler Harris, Declan
V
Kenny, Sam Shepherd, Nick Mark, AidanandZachClark.
With one of the umpires dominating early, the seniors was a dour close affair until ¾ time. The strength of Millicents list/players was telling in the end, but again we showed we are not too far off the top sides. In the absence of other options on the day, Sam Stafford dominated in the ruck to be named best. Other mudlarks to get in the best players wereJakeSchutz,BradAdamsand Tim McInerney Nick Blachut was alsonameinthebest, maybeashe successfully walked across the oval before the game in his white sneakers and then proceeded not to get any mud on his person duringthegame!
This week we play East and have Matthew Chapman playing in his 409th senior game, a club record. One of the great clubmen, you mightnotfindhisnameontheB& F,butheisaclubfavouriteandany player who has played alongside him will tell you they would go to w a r w i t h C h a p p y Congratulations, but may be time todropthehawks..

Today we welcome the Cats in a twilight match, coinciding with Ladies Day. The best place to be will be Tin Shed for some quality BBQandgeneralbanter
Good wins in both grades in coldandheavyconditions.
In the Seniors, the North outfit came out with a plan and style a play that restricted and stifled free movementandrunformost of the first half. Some innovative and unorthodox positional changes in the second half and a battening down of the hatches resultedinacomfortable30 point win. Best players were Gidda, Boxy, Frazer, Chipper, Ginny and Clint. Dredgie finished with three goals, Truck’s second half cameo snared two goals, Gidda scored one and Boxy ceremoniously snuck forward to kick one too. A good win in front of our home crowd on a subAntarcticday.

In the Rezzies, it was also an armwrestlethatleadtoa25 point win. The usual suspects featured in the best, but particularly dominant were Nat and Smithers. Pidge continued his good form as did Matt Varcoe. Thomas Chant provided a clinic on how forwards should play in cold and slippery conditions to finish with three goals Singles to Pidge, Smithers, Nat,HarryGibbsandNash.

Round 9 Cat Fans and here we are eating super snags at McLaughlin ParkinMillicent! It'snotoftensunny when we watch the seniors here at East Southend but today we return tothetwilightgame,“Waitaminute Doc, are you telling me you built a time machine out of a DeLorean?” NoCatFanswehaven'tgonebackto the 90's but we are under lights again.
Last weekend was a real mixed bag in the footy, the seniors got away to a great start and held that lead for the entire game, the Under 16's almostgotovertheundefeatedlittle devils and the Ressies and Under 14'shadacrackbutwerejustoffthe mark.
TheUnder14Cats werebestserved by Harry Butterworth, Jett Lykke, TakudzwaMakoreandBillyRhook.
The Under 16's made the most of the early good weather and ground conditions, moving the ball well and matching South in every position and were unlucky to go down by a point, the young Cats are improving witheverygameundertheguidance of Coach Fidler and will be a force to bereckonedwithcomefinals.Better players were Bay McKinnon, Jedd Rhook, Elwood Geary and Jack Rhook.
The Reserves ripped up the park, literally, the heavens opened and the ground soon became slippery, South came off the better team but there were plenty of positives in the
way Justin Carlins Reserves played. Better players were Brad Gill, Rufaro Makore, Jarrad Smith and Jake Smith.
TheSeniorsgotofftoaflyerintrying conditionsandheldSouthtojustthe one goal for the game, I should have known the Cats backline was going to be on song as before the game Matt Killey was following me everywhere, getting some practice inforthegameIguess.
Better players were Jarrod O'Brien, Diarmid Cleary, Michael Krieger, Dylan”the Prez” Ayton, Alastair McCraeandDamianWombwell.
Well Cat Fans time to tuck into another Super Snag and make like a tree and get out of here, CARN CATS!!!

Well, that was fun last week. 2 goalskickedintheseniorgame after quarter time with very ordinary conditions. Casterton made use of the first 20 minutes while the ball was ok and after that it was an absolute slog Best players were Mitch Sims who also kicked a goal, Harry Mtichell in his debut played a ripper, Oli Thompson, Elmo Marks who continues his good season and HarryWright
The Ressies got up by 26 points In the awards were Tommy Vassallo, Jack Gazzard, Connor OReilly, Henry Snell, Josh Harvey and Chris Williams, Riley Sturges bagged three on a tough day for forwards.
The 16's snuck in by a point against a really solid Casterton outfit. A couple of goals to Will Attiwill and awards to Bentley, Milich, Lockwood, Sigley, O'ReillyandHarryHicks
The 14's bounced back after a loss the previous week. Three goals to Oli McCracken and

VHi All, well what a wet cold day we had last week. We had a good day on the field throughout and look forward to playing at South. Winne told us to bring sneakers only this week so look forward to playing on south's good dry deck. So we can leave our flippers and snorkels home and get ourFootballbootsonagain.
Special mention to under 18s from both sides on Saturday playing football and both displaying what the game is about Well done to a few of our boys whoplayedforEastaswell.
Great effort by Foxy and Dunny in working out what's right for football
SpecialmentiontoFinnwho our thoughts are with this week. The tough little bugger took a fair hit in football and ended up in hospital with cracked ribs and collapsed lung. Make
surewegetaroundFinnand his family and show our west support. With that nothing better to make you feel better then the President Pie award. Get the best pies in town into you Finn and see you aroundtheclubagain.
Last week was a true indicator of our league With the ladder positions you would not be expecting to see that score line. Credit to East and the quality of k i d s t h a t p l aye d o n Saturday Made us fight all the way to steal the win and a great game from some of ourplayers.
This week we face a fast young running south side who every week are getting better, so the challenge continueswitheveryweeka toughnewchallenge.

Last month Geelong celebrated the 60th anniversary of its 1963 VFL premiership victory
In that team was former West Gambier ruckman John Yeates who captained Geelong the previous two seasons in 1961 and62.
There are at least six former SANFL or VFL/AFL captains or captain-coaches who played and coached here in Mount Gambier, Penola or Millicent either after their league careers or on their way to play league.
The six league captains (that I can remember) were West Gambier’s John Yeates (Geelong), North Gambier’s Frank Davis (Melbourne), Penola’s Graham Robbins (Richmond and South Adelaide), Millicent’s Barry Goodingham (North and South Melbourne and Woodville) and North and West Gambier’s Johnnie Taylor (West Adelaide and Glenelg). The sixth and perhaps the exception was East Gambier’s Ralph Rogerson who played and coached the Bulldogs after arriving from North Adelaide in 1959 and then went to East Perth before moving to Fitzroy where was captainin1965and1966.HewontheSEBFL MailMedalin1960.
Johnnie Taylor was skipper of West Adelaide when they won the 1947 SANFL premiership and would later captain-coach WestAdelaidefortwoseasonsbeforebeing playing coach of Glenelg in the early 1950s. He then accepted a playing coaching role withNorthGambierinabout1954.
Later, in 1957 he would become West Gambier’sfirstpremiershipcoach.
He is one of only two SANFL or VFL playing coaches to become a captain-coach with a local SEBFL or WBFL team (Barry Goodingham was the other) and he was oneofsixVFLorSANFLcaptainswhowould playhereinthelocalleague.
Yeates left Mount Gambier as a teenager after playing in West Gambier’s first premiership in the South East and Border football League in 1957. After his stint at Geelong he returned to West Gambier to play in their 1971 WBFL premiership and
wouldlatercoachtheteam intheearly1970s.
Frank Davis was a tough, close-checking, hard-at-the-ball half back for Melbourne. He moved into A grade or league ranks in 1964 and after six games played in Melbourne’s 1964 VFL premiership He later rose to become captain of the club from 1970 until 1973, winning the club’s best and fairest in 1970 and playing 168 leaguegames.
After a stellar VFL career Davis took up the North Gambier captain-coach role in 1974 replacingKenGladmanwhohadcomefrom Geelong in 1971. Davis returned to Melbournein1976andwasassistantcoach of Melbourne in 1979 and was acting nonplaying coach for one game when playing coachCarlDitterichwassuspended.
GrahamRobbinsarrivedatRichmondinthe VFL in 1969 and across three seasons played 13 league games before enjoying a stint with VFA club Oakleigh and then moved to South Adelaide He won the club’s goal kicking in 1975 and was captain in 1977 before being appointed captain coach of Penola in 1979 after being transferred in employment to Mount Gambier
NorthandSouthMelbourneruckmanBarry Goodingham played 188 VFL games with those two clubs (158 with North). He was on the bench in North’s first AFL/VFL premiership in 1975 He switched to Woodville in 1978 and became captaincoach in 1979 and 80. He took Woodville into the finals in 1979 but were wooden spoonersin1980.Hewaslaterappointedas captain-coachofMillicentinthe1980s.
Yeates, Davis, Robbins, Goodingham and Taylor are the only five players I can recall who came here (or returned) to Mount Gambier, Penola and Millicent to continue theircareersaftertheycaptainedaVFL/AFL or SANFL side. In this case all five became playing coaches of local clubs at some point. As stated, Ralph Rogerson was the exceptionandwentontocaptainaVFLside after playing and coaching in Mount

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This story is really about creatingareactionandcommentfromlocal footy buffs to discover whether anyone can add to the list above. My football recollections range from the early 1950s until the mid 1980s, so there may be other VFL/AFL or SANFL league captains/coaches who played locally in Mount Gambier outside of those years. Reigningpremiers West Gambiermake a habit of star ng strongly and the weekend was no excep on when their 18-8 opening quarter set a tone for the RoosclashwithEastGambier
And the task for the Bulldogs wasn’t made any easier without star defender BoCreekavailable.
That saw Morgan Amy move out to goal defence and Sharna McKinnon tale the goal keeper bib as the new look duo looked to stem one of the most prolific s c o r i n g c o m b i n a o n s i n t h e compe on.
WestshooterSarahRi er,freshfromher s e l e c o n i n t h e S A C o u n t r y Championships Top 10, ne ed 15 from 17 in a stunning opening quarter performance and she backed that up with 16 from 19 in the second and 12 from 14 in the third, before the tough condi ons made for more difficult conversioninthefinalstanza.
It wasn’t just the opening quarter that the Roos dominated, with the half me advantage si ng at 20 and the three quarter me buffer extending to 28 but East did salvage something with a final quarter win to trim the final margin to 21.
Of course it wasn’t just the dominant shoo ng performance of Ri er courtesy of some outstanding delivery from Lisa McGregor, itwasalsothehardrunningof Tara Bryant, who dominated the mid court with her sweeping drives and accuratefeeding, aswellasthedefensive pressure for which the reigning champs havemadeatrademark.
East basically had way fewer scoring opportuni es than the Roos as Bryant and Zoe Malseed pressured the East feeders and Amy Cram and Jade Ri er denied East goalers Renee Henke and CaseyHorrigananyeasyball.
Both East goalers made the most of their limited opportuni es but when team generates 75 opportuni es and their opponentsonly54,themarginisgoingto behe y.
Henke had a perfect opening quarter with seven from seven, while Horrigan came into her own in the final quarter as she found space and ne ed nine from 12.
Eliza Cole, a new face in the East line-up for 2023, has started to make the wing defence role her own and she was again inEast’sbest.
MILLICENTVNORTHGAMBIER
Last me Millicent and North Gambier faced off, the Tigers held on for a two goal victory but at the weekend, Millicent had done their homework and reversed that result to secure a 57-42 homecourtwin.
Theopeninghalfwasanarmwrestleand even at three quarter me, the seven goal deficit for the Tigers was not necessarily insurmountable but the Saints dominated the final quarter to turn that seven goal lead into a 15 goal finalmargin.
Despite the tough condi ons, both sides got value for money from their shoo ng combina ons – Millicent’s Tabatha Sanderson and Demi Verbena ne ng 57 from 68 and North’s Macey Griffith and GracePo sconver ng42from52.

Saints shooter Tabatha Sanderson was again prolific under the post but young defender Stella Mobbs certainly didn’t letthepremiershipgoalerhavethingsall herownway Demi Verbena, who was arguably best on court with her accurate finishing, pinpoint passing to Sanderson and ability to find space thanks to her speed and ming,s llearnteveryballthanksto the ghtcheckingofNoniMcConnell.

The other mid court ba le between Saints superstar Lisa Duldig and reigning Shirley Underwood Medallist Brianna Walters was intriguing as both played cri calrolesfortheirteams.
Macey Griffith (North) and Lauren van Eeden were team mates at the recent SA Country Championships, represen ng Western Border in the 17 & under compe on, but the young duo were fierce opponents on the weekend as Griffith played her usual role of feeding GracePo sandVanEedenplayedoneof herbestgamesinthetopgrade, crea ng plentyofturnoverball.

SOUTH GAMBIER V C A S T E R T O N SANDFORD
SouthGambiersecureditssecondwinof the season when it hosted Casterton Sandford in less than ideal condi ons for qualitynetball.
The win was set up in the opening quarter when the Demons flew out of the blocks, se ng up an eight goal lead and in the end, while the remainder of the match was an arm wrestle, the cats just couldn’t make inroads and succumbed41-32.
Gracie Dalton was the focal point in the opening quarter and ne ed 11 from 14 as the teenager stood up under the pressure from Cats defenders Ebany JarradandCaeleighHumphries.
At the other end, the defensive pressure from Tully McShane, Ellie Bouchier and Sophie Wight limited the scoring opportuni esforIvyLaneandMadalene Cleary and were it not for Lane’s perfect five from five, the scoreline may well have been more damaging at that first change.
Dalton was again prominent in the second but as the condi ons deteriorated so did the shoo ng accuracy and all four goalers struggled in thetoughwindandrain.
Itwasaninegoalgameatthemainbreak and South looked to change thing sup withRubyRichtermovingtogoalkeeper, Wight into the centre and Megan Reid to thea ackingwing.
The changes neither unse led the Demons or made a huge change to the ebbs and flow of the match and at the finalchangeitwasa10goalgame.
On the back of some strong finishing from Cleary and Lane, the cats won the final quarter by one but the first quarter damage remained and South took the pointswithaninegoalwin.
Bouchier, who moved from her usual defensive post into the centre for the final quarter, was the Demons’ best, while Richter had an impact both on the a ackingwingandingoalkeeper Humphries and her ability to create turnover ball saw her named the Cats best, while Madeline Pa on backed up a strong performance in the 17 & under match with another hard running and error-free effort in A Grade to also be in theCats’best.
ROUNDPREVIEWS
SOUTH GAMBIER V CASTERTON SANDFORD
One of the keys to this match will be how the four South Gambier players who represented Western Border at the weekend's SA Country Championships have pulled up a er the gruelling weekend.
Casterton Sandford also has two players inthatboat.
Southarguablyhasamorese ledline-up with Gracie Dalton and Alyssa Duncan star ng to form a strong combina on in goals, while the Cats have s ll been experimen nginthatspace, althoughIvy Lane and Chelsey Galpin look set to perhapsgetalongruninthoseroles.
Defensively, South relies on the athle c duo of Sophie Wight and Ellie Bouchier and they will be looking to create plenty of turnover ball and deny the young Cats shoo ngcombina on meandspace.
Of course the Cats defenders, Ebany Jarrad and Caeleigh Humphries, will be looking to do the same to Duncan and Dalton, with Madalene Cleary also an op oninthatdefensivecircleifrequired.
Cleary willnodoubtstartinthemidcourt to control the game for the Cats and her ba le with Megan Reid will be a pivotal, and in the end it will be the team that looks a er the ball and limits its errors in transi onthatwilltakethepoints.

MILLICENTVNORTHGAMBIER
North Gambier announced its new look 2023 line-up when last the Tigers took on Millicentandgrabbedanarrowvictory
It sees this rematch as the clear match of the round and every match up looms large.
Mikaila Pi will no doubt get first crack and limi ng the influence of Saints shooter Tabatha Sanderson, relying somewhat on the pressure on delivery out in front of her, and North has the luxury of Stella Mobbs in the wings if requiredwithhersuperiorheight.

The mid courts for both sides have a blend of experience and youth and both will be looking to move the ball quickly to take advantage of their respec ve tall shooters.
Mel Renko leads the Tigers mid court wit the class of Brianna Walters and her speed onto the circle, with Lauran Norman bringing the athle cism and abilitytocreateturnoverball.
Lisa Duldig is the leader of the Saints mid court, workingintandematthedefensive end with Kimmi Tincknell, who could also earn a s nt in the defensive circle, with Lillie Paul and Daisy Tunkin bringing the speedandqualitydelivery
North recruit Grace Po s has had a stunning start to her me as a Tiger and her combina on with young gun Macey Griffith is already looking solid but the Tigesshooterswillhavetoworkover me to get any easy ball in space with Por a McRae, Lauren Van Eeden and Tincknell strong ght checking defenders who contesteverything.
Millicent will have analysed the round three loss and will reverse the result in another ghtba le.
WEST GAMBIER V EASTGAMBIER
West Gambier has three players coming off SA Country Championships duty, with East also having one representa ve, but the Roos will start well and truly favourite,
That being said, East is star ng to build butse lingthenewlookline-uphasbeen hamperedbyplayedunavailability.
The reigning premiers have looked polishedandin-syncin2023butnodoubt are looking to develop and build and bring increased pressure to their opposi on.
The defensive end of West so o en sets up their dominant wins with Amy Cram and Jade Ri er making it hard for opposi on goalers to find space in range and Zoe Malseed and Tara Bryant placing relentless pressure on the feeders to hopefullydrawerrorsindelivery
At the other end, the Roos are clinical in their ball movement wit Lisa McGregor controllingthea ackingendofthecourt, working in tandem with Bryant and Mikaela Horrigan to find their star shooter Sarah Ri er, who has named in theSACountryChampionshipsTop10.
East has a smaller moving goal circle with Renee Henke and Casey Horrigan, and working the angles with Tarsh McCallum and Chloe Perryman, will be the key to their success and McCallum's pace and smarts and Perryman's strength in the air will be cri cal in finding good circle posi ontodelivertothegoalers.
At the other end of the court, Bo Creek and Morgan Amy are an experience defensive duo and they will need the mid court to slow the Roos ball movement to give them a chance to limit the scoring opportuni esforMcGregorandRi er
