Yorkshire YATTER

Ihave devoured Rice & Flesh at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal in London (it’s actually a 14th century recipe of sa ron, beef cheek and red wine), feasted on exquisite caviar in the gilded ballroom of the grand, rococo Catherine Palace in St Petersburg, and sco ed delicious canapes within the hallowed baroque halls of Buckingham Palace. But in recent times I’ve realised that you don’t need to travel across the globe or visit the capital’s salubrious eateries to sample incredible cuisine – as over the past decade Yorkshire has created some of the most amazing restaurants on earth.

Most know about the delicious fare served at establishments such as Roots in York, The Angel at Hetton and The Man Behind the Curtain in Leeds, but over the past year more outstanding restaurants have launched, causing a sensational stir in the culinary industry.

York boasts many world-class new eateries. I was recently lucky enough to visit

Legacy, The Grand Hotel’s new restaurant, which despite its infancy has created a hugely positive furore among food critics. Head Chef Ahmed Abdalla blew my mind and taste buds by serving an array of succulent tastes across his bespoke eightcourse menu – boasting Yorkshire produce with a modern twist. I shall never forget the mouth-watering duck liver ganache or tender salt aged Yorkshire beef with beetroot and bone marrow. The genius Ahmed says he has been inspired by the pioneers of York’s past, ‘Those individuals who turned their imagination into reality, which can now be seen in iconic buildings, revolutionary railways and the heritage of this great city.’

Over in Leeds, The Ivy Asia is a feast for the senses. From the sublime and stunning décor that takes your breath away, to the divine fusion of flavours, the only problem is that you won’t want to leave. Under the guidance of our lovely waiter Joe, we ordered a variety of dishes. The Byrnes still dream of the yellowtail sashimi, Wagyu beef and hot and sour plum chicken. We did ask (beg) Joe if we could move in permanently, but he sadly broke our hearts by saying no.

There’s also the uber chic The Vices York, located in a Victorian Police Station, where you can experience the incredible creations of chef Luke Sanderson at Allium. His diverse selection of tastes and flavours are so divine, the intimate restaurant has already been featured in the Michelin Guide.

So come on Yorkies! Let’s say nay to Nandos, ciao to Chiquitos and farewell to Five Guys, and embrace our county’s best local cuisine. Bon Appetit!

CITY CREATIVES

York Open Studios returns from 15–16 April and 21–22 April, and here are some of the highlights to keep an eye out for

The two York Open Studios weekends in April are fast approaching. More than 150 artists and makers within the city and a 10 mile radius of York will open their doors to visitors to enjoy a diverse range of mediums including painting and print, illustration, drawing and mixed media, ceramics, glass and sculpture, jewellery, textiles, photography and installation art. It’s a unique opportunity to view and buy art and an insight into their inspirations, processes and skills. New to York Open Studios 2023, as well as much-collected regular artists, include Emma Yeoman who works on intricate displays of flora and fauna, varying from sculpture to canvas that will be exhibited within the grounds of York St John University; Anna Vialle, who’s delicately stippled pen and watercolour drawings of birds, insects and landscapes are inspired by the style, colours and composition of both Victorian natural history prints and Japanese woodblock prints; Michelle Hughes, whose linocut prints of British landscapes and wildlife feature the Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire Coast, North York Moors and Lake District, as well as the wildlife that inhabits them; Amy Stubbs, whose beautiful textiles include surface pattern designs influenced by nostalgia and family heritage, and who develops her designs using both manual and digital printmaking techniques, later applying them to home furnishings and fine art prints; and Philip Magson's mostly white glazed

stoneware hand-thrown pots will be o ered alongside his homeware as well as individual vessels, often composites of thrown shapes decorated with abstract pattern.

York Open Studios continues to champion emerging artists, and this year three bursary artists showcase their work over the weekends: Peter Baker, site specific installation at Fishergate Postern Tower; Jade Blood, community textiles; and Sam Edward, who hides tiny sculptures around the city for people to find during the weekends. Throughout York City Centre, Sam has scattered small concrete sculptures, 'Monuments', resembling obelisks, monoliths and memorials but scaled down, to memorialise moments from York. Sam has snatched overheard conversations and appropriated text to commemorate the time we are living in. In the studio you will find the production behind 'Miniature Monuments' and see the process live as an ongoing work.

York Open Studios not only continues to set the bar in 2023 for diversity and inspiration, it also provides a lovely way to enjoy the city of York and its environs.

LOVE STORY

and the arts in Yorkshire

It’s not surprising that Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman have won multiple awards for their storytelling and musical ways, as Kathryn’s passion for her craft shines through from the minute we start talking. Originally from Barnsley, a place known for nurturing and supporting the low-key folk scene, it’s obvious that music has been a part of her life from a very young age. Some might say it was only inevitable that she would go into a career in the sector, but what is clear is that it runs passionately through her veins. “I grew up in a very musical family, both parents are music teachers and are also heavily involved in the folk scene in Barnsley,” she tells me. “I went to a lot of festivals and folk clubs as a little girl and I just grew up surrounded by music.”

Despite this early start, it was a happy accident that Kathryn pursued music in a professional capacity. In fact, she once thought she’d study medicine at university. “I kind

of fell into performing with my childhood friend Kate Rusby, who is also very local, and we worked as a duo and made an album together when we were 18,” she says. “I always intended to go back to university, but I enjoyed making music so much that I’m now 48 and I’ve never gone back.”

Kathryn does, however, credit her childhood with the path her life has taken her. “As I look back, my early childhood was probably a huge influence. I grew up absorbing music around the house and at festivals, so it was natural for me to always sing,” she tells me. “The old traditional folk songs that my mum used to sing have informed a large part of our repertoire and the way in which I write songs. I always seem to come back to that storytelling aspect of folk music.”

She also talks fondly of Barnsley itself, and how the strong folk and arts scene in the Yorkshire town has impacted her throughout her life. “Barnsley has always had a really strong folk fraternity,” she says. “The

Barnsley Folk Club was always incredibly well attended and it was really welcoming. My mum would always take me along and it’s my first memory of singing in front of other people. There’s lots of great musicians who have come out of the town, like Kate, Dave Burland, and more recently, The BarSteward Sons of Val Doonican. Barnsley has really helped people to feel comfortable with their music and really supported.”

As Kathryn talks me through the story of meeting her husband, and now lifetime music partner, Sean Lakeman, it feels only fitting that we’re sat interviewing on Valentine’s Day. It’s clear that they were a match made in heaven from the moment they met, and it’s no surprise that they’ve had such a successful and joy-filled career. “Kate and I met the Lakeman brothers, who are from Dartmoor, and I ended up falling in love with Sean,” she smiles. “We started playing music together, working in a band together, and we settled down in Dartmoor. We make music as a duo, and it’s a really nice

shared experience, we get to do everything together, and although that doesn’t work for every husband and wife, it really does for us. We get to travel the country and have all sorts of marvellous experiences and adventures, and make music together – it’s lovely.”

Speaking of their career together, they’ve had a pretty amazing one, and have twice been recognised as the Best Duo by the BBC Folk Awards. Looking at her highlights, Kathryn says: “I have vivid and very fond memories of touring in America with the band Sean and I used to be in. I specifically remember playing in downtown Los Angeles, and for a girl from Barnsley, it felt incredibly glamorous and

I loved it. A few years ago we got to play at The Royal Albert Hall, which was awesome to get to play at such a wonderful, iconic venue, so that was really special for me.”

Kathryn loves that the winning of awards helps to keep folk music on the musical map both nationally and internationally, and feels proud to be part of keeping it alive.

“I love playing gigs to people who are not particularly folk fans. We sometimes do these rural touring schemes, which take you out to villages in the middle of nowhere and the whole village comes out to support, but not necessarily because they like folk music,” explains Kathryn. “We get so many people coming to us at the end saying that they didn’t know they liked folk music and realising that actually they do. That’s really satisfying. Folk music always comes in waves and I think we are heading towards another peak of interest from people. It used to be thought of as an old person’s genre, but I think that’s changing. Music is really accessible now and it’s easy to explore new genres.”

In true, friendly Yorkshire style, the most important element of making music for Kathryn is about creating connections with other people. “We always feel that we’ve done a good job at the end of the night if people come and say that a particular song has triggered a memory or a shared emotion,” she says. “It’s a lovely shared experience, music.”

As spring arrives, Kathryn is visibly bursting with excitement about the upcoming 30-date tour and festival season that arrives with the turn of the weather. So, what’s she looking forward to for the rest of 2023? It’s immediately clear that she’s excited for her homecoming Yorkshire dates at Selby Town Hall, Live at Sams in She eld and Carriageworks in Leeds, and tells me that people can expect an intimate environment. “We always play a mix of traditional songs and songs that we’ve written, and we’ve just released a new album so there will be songs from that,” she says.

As Kathryn is sat in her mum and dad’s house in Dodworth, she tells me how much she loves Yorkshire and coming home. “I love the variety,” she smiles. “There’s so many fields and woodlands with wonderful walks to be had. Yorkshire’s got a bit of everything and everyone is so friendly. Every summer, we used to go to Whitby Folk Festival and I still feel such a pull there, it’s a special place. I have such fond memories of growing up in Yorkshire and some of my best times were playing in the Barnsley Town Concert Band! Barnsley has always been really excellent in its music provision for young people and that had a massive impact on my life.”

See Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman at Carriageworks on 19 April, Live at Sams on 20 April, Victoria Hall in Settle on 23 April, Selby Town Hall on 28 April, and Reeth Memorial Hall on 19 October; kathrynrobertsandseanlakeman.com

Get to know… JOANNE PICKARD

QUEEN OF THE VOICEOVER, ACTOR, PRESENTER AND FACE OF OMAZE UK

Q You’re a born and bred Yorkshire girl, what was it like growing up in the county?

A I grew up firstly in the market town of Kirkbymoorside, where my parents owned a sports shop called Charles Pickard Sports and I went to Kirkbymoorside Primary –I actually went back recently and held an assembly, which I loved. My parents then purchased a 17th century coaching inn, The Royal Oak, in the village of Gillamoor, which we all lived above – me, my parents and younger brother Jonny. I went to Ryedale Secondary School and then Lady Lumby’s in Pickering for Sixth Form.

As a family we used to go to Florios, a traditional Italian in Malton, for a monthly treat. It’s still there now and I enjoy going with my own family. I have fond memories of Scarborough too; my great aunts lived there and I adored staying with them and walking around Peasholm Park and along the seafront, devouring an ice cream.

When I was 20, we moved to Harome, into a house my dad built when my family sold the pub. I wasn’t there for long though as at 21 I left to ‘explore the globe’. True to my promise, I have visited every continent three times, but I’ve come back full circle, much to the astonishment of my parents. It was love that drew me back to Yorkshire eight years ago,

I now live in the village of Nunnington, the village next door to my parents, with my husband, Stephen Rooke, a potato farmer and lifelong Yorkshireman. I have twin step-daughters Katie and Chloe, 30, and two doggies, Hendricks and Babes, and I couldn’t be happier to be back.

Q How did you get into voiceover work, was it something you’d always wanted to do?

A I originally trained as an actor, but then went into presenting and have presented over 200 live major events, including commentating at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. When I was presenting at London 2012, I felt so proud as Yorkshire sportspeople brought home seven gold

22 ABSOLUTELY magazines

medals, two silver and three bronzes. I’ve done bits and pieces of voiceover work over the years and always enjoyed it and I wanted to go back to acting as I missed it terribly. When the pandemic hit it accelerated my voice acting as I was stuck at home with no presenting work so I could focus everything on it. I am lucky enough to have my own home studio – that was a real challenge to get everything sound proofed, and learn the technician ropes.

Q What voiceover projects will people recognise you from and which have been your favourite?

A I’ve voiced characters in Netflix originals, such as Athena and The Girl From Oslo, and I am the face and voice of Omaze UK, who I am so grateful to for all that we achieve. Changing people’s lives and raising so much for UK charities [over £3 million] has given my life so much meaning. I also recently voiced a documentary for Sir Jackie Stewart called Race Against Dementia, which will be out soon, which allowed me to flex my storytelling talents and hopefully play a small part in

raising money to fund the breakthrough and innovate dementia research.

Q You were recently named in NYC Journal’s top inspiring women of 2022, which said that your ‘versatile voice has the power tomove and amuse in equal measure’. How did that feel?

A Honestly, I was blown away and humbled. In the same month, I also won a US/

Canadian competition called The Ultimate VO Survivor. I was over the moon, but most of all proud of myself for taking on the challenge and giving it my all.

Q What do you like doing when you’re not working?

A I adore being outside in the countryside or taking in the sea air. Ryedale has some stunning scenery and our favourite coastal day out is Filey or Robin Hood’s Bay, where Stephen and I got married, so it holds beautiful memories. I’m never happier than on a long walk with the dogs and a nice pub lunch. We discovered The Cod and Lobster at Staithes recently, good wholesome pub food and fab atmosphere. I’m into Pilates, yoga and anything that helps mind, body and soul.

Q What are your favourite places in Yorkshire?

A We are so blessed, I mean where do I start? The Star Inn and The Pheasant in Harome, for a treat, obviously; The Grapes is our local and full of grand folk and great food. I love wandering around Helmsley and popping into Hunters to get some treats, and The Park in Hovingham is a delightful café to lose a couple of hours chatting with a friend or reading a book with a co ee and maybe a slice of cake.

Q What do you love most about living in Yorkshire?

A The people and their open, kind, can-do, no-nonsense attitude; the scenery, everywhere you look there is pure beauty; the food and all the gorgeous little villages.

THE SUPPORT TEAM

The Grand National Festival’s biggest cheerleaders who play a part in bringing magnificent racehorses to the track

The world’s most famous horserace, it is no surprise that it ‘takes a village’ to get the equine athletes to the start line of the Grand National. From 13-15 April, more than 150 horses will perform on one of the sport’s greatest stages during the Grand National Festival at Aintree.

The thrill of horseracing has long captured our nation, in fact it’s our second biggest spectator sport. But the high-octane thrill of the raceday is a far cry from the calmer day-to-day life of these spectacular athletes. Whether it’s a morning run on the gallops, taking a restorative swim in a state-of-the-art equine swimming pool or a physiotherapy session to ease away any aching muscles, there’s a huge team involved in keeping a racehorse fit and healthy.

Like all athletes, racehorses have tailored training programmes to suit their individual needs and it takes an extraordinary partnership between a racehorse and those that support it to understand what works best.

Typically, a racehorse will have a team of at least six core people involved in the 365 days of care and raceday preparation. The core team is made up of a trainer, yard sta , work rider, farrier, vet and physio not to mention the wider dedicated team members such as the secretary, jockey, nutritionist, chiropractor, travelling team and equine dentist.

ARTISTIC INTENT

Acclaimed artist Lucy Pittaway takes the next step in expanding her unique art brand by opening a gallery in York

Coming full circle, Lucy Pittaway's decade-long career culminates in her collections finding their way to the capital of Yorkshire, the regional epicentre that continues to provide endless inspiration and feature in the backdrop of many of her pieces. This is Lucy’s sixth solo gallery and follows in the footsteps of her existing galleries by making art accessible.

O ering collectable original works of art as well as striking Giclee prints, homeware and stationery, the latest gallery guarantees to complement the already rich retail o ering and bring art to the forefront of York.

Taking on the two-storey premises located at 21 Coppergate, Lucy will breathe new life into this empty store once home to womenswear retailer Oasis, which closed its doors in March 2020, leaving 1,900 sq ft of empty space on the high street. Main-stay retailers including M&S, Primark and Lakeland are close by along with independent stores and eateries. Its proximity to the Jorvik centre, the Shambles and York Minster will be a welcome addition to the existing destination attractions in the city.

Looking ahead at the impact of the new gallery, Lucy explains: “York is such a special place and somewhere I continue to get so much inspiration from, it has a lot to o er and is appealing to a wide range of people as a destination. I’m incredibly grateful that my journey has led me here and am confident that locals and visitors will enjoy the bright store front as it’s something di erent from the existing o ering.”

Lucy adds: “York attracts local and international visitors through its history, attractions, academia and culture, which is underpinned by a strong retail o er. We hope

our gallery o ers a refreshed opportunity for locals to love their high street and enhance the experiences for tourists with a further boost to the city’s visitor economy.”

Lucy’s love of the outdoors shines through in her artwork, with many pieces showcasing regional landmarks from across Yorkshire, the Dales and beyond.

“The sheer size of Yorkshire a ords us so many opportunities to enjoy diverse landscapes such as fells and valleys, amazing coastlines and vibrant cities and historic towns – there is something for everyone and we look forward to working with others to promote York as an exceptional destination,” Lucy explains.

The store will welcome customers at its opening weekend on 25-26 March. Find out more at lucypittaway.co.uk

BRODSWORTH HALL

Brodsworth Hall in Doncaster was built in the 1860s for the Thellusson family, but as the family’s fortune diminished, the house and gardens gradually fell into decline and disrepair.

Today, the Victorian pleasure gardens have been expertly restored to their former glory, and are the perfect place for a family adventure in the fresh air. The house has been gently conserved to tell the stories of the generations of people who lived and worked there. The gardens are the perfect place for a stroll through the statue walks, the fern dell grotto and the beautiful dells.

This month, there’s plenty to excite all the family. From 1-16 April, Brodsworth Hall will be staging a family adventure quest. Explore the gardens to hunt for clues and challenges and discover traditional Easter games like egg rolling and the egg and spoon race. Track down the Easter eggs and you’ll be rewarded with an adventurer’s certificate and a tasty chocolate treat.

Then, later in the month from 30 April-1 May, enjoy listening to Yorkshire’s finest swing bands, as they perform against the stunning backdrop of Brodsworth Hall. Bring along your deckchairs and relax with an afternoon of superb music. The perfect way to spend the early May bank holiday and indulge in one of the county’s finest historic landmarks.

Why we love… MALTON

Since 2019 Malton, which can be found in the North Riding of Yorkshire, has been well-known as the ‘Food Capital of Yorkshire’ – and for good reason, too. Visitors can expect a quintessential market town combined with chic boutiques, a thriving foodie scene, and hip and happening festivals.

RICH HISTORY

Malton’s roots date back to Roman times, with the earliest established building in the town having been erected in the late first century AD. In the 11th century, a large timber Norman castle was built in what is now known as Castle Garden.

According to Visit Yorkshire: “Malton has existed on two other sites prior to its current location. The town has been the

historic centre of Ryedale since Roman times, originally with a fort established on the northern bank of the River Derwent, at what is now Orchard Fields. The village of Old Malton, however, an Anglian settlement, was developed as the original town around a Gilbertine Priory, fragments of which remain in the Church of St Mary's. The present town of Malton is a busy market town with a street market on Saturdays and a twiceweekly livestock market. Monthly markets are also held regularly. An eclectic mix of architectural styled shops, inns and tearooms surround the market place.”

There are plenty of historic places to enjoy, too. One is Birdsall House and Estate, an English country house which dates back from the late 16th century, hosting truly bespoke weddings and events in a fantastic setting. There are stunning views up to the Yorkshire Wolds as well.

BEAUTY AND AMENITIES

To enjoy the history and architecture of the town, take a walk through the winding streets and immerse yourself in the old-fashioned market square, perfectly punctuated with new businesses to the backdrop of St Michael’s Church. From here, meander down Market Street, now thriving and one of the most loved destinations in Malton, packed with quirky and buzzing shops and cafes. While you’re here, don’t miss out on visiting McMillans of Malton for some specialist gin or whisky, pop into the wonderful vegan cafe The Purple Carrot, head to Hare and Wilde if impeccably curated interiors are up your street, or the jewellery boutique By Elise, at 2 Yorkersgate, whose collection consists of necklaces, pendants, earrings and bracelets.

For a real taste of the rich history and architecture available in the small town, Saville Street takes you back in time, despite it now being full to the brim with great interiors, food and fashion. The street is lined with beautiful converted Congregational and Methodist chapels, and well worth a mooch through. To fuel up on

your whistlestop tour of Malton, pop into The Patisserie and fill up on deli treats, good co ee and pastries galore. If cycling is your thing, and you want to explore the surrounding countryside, it’s worth a visit to Northern Ride, too. Once done on Saville Street, take a walk to The Shambles. Once a street of bustling butchers shops in the 18th century, it’s now home to a vibrant and eclectic mix of independent shops, including Rickshaw Bazaar for ethicallysourced gifts and homewares, The Drunk Candle Company, and The Country Cobbler.

Back to our history tour, in 1713 the Borough of Malton was purchased by Thomas Watson Wentworth and from the outset the family invested heavily in the town, as they still do to this day. They made huge advancements in making sure the river made Malton navigable to the town, worked hard on making sure roads

led to the town and invested heavily in factories, schools and public buildings. Due to this, Malton survived the industrial revolution and was able to become the success story of a rural market town that it is today. Twelve generations later, much of Malton is still owned by Thomas Watson Wentworth’s descendants, the NaylorLeylands, who hold the Fitzwilliam Malton Estate and were responsible for turning it into the foodie destination you see now.

FOODIE FEVER

With Tom Naylor-Leyland pouring so much time and love into celebrating artisan produce in Malton, one thing’s for sure, you will never be short of eating and drinking in this quaint town, and the independent businesses are second to none. Taking over the streets of Yorkshire’s Food Capital, the Malton Food Lovers Festival will make its grand return on 27-28 May 2023, ahead of the spring bank holiday. The festival is then scheduled to return once again over the August bank holiday weekend, on 26-27 August 2023. Malton Food Lovers Festival is a celebration of Yorkshire's finest produce and cooking, boasting a number of artisan stalls, delicious street food, live talks from local celebrated chefs, tastings and delicious demonstrations, as well as a festival bar, live music, children’s fairground rides and family entertainment. And, because the festival is uniquely placed in the town centre, visitors can also browse the fantastic range of independent retailers and artisan makers who call Malton home all year round.

Talbot Yard and the regeneration of this area sits at the very heart of the o ering, where you’ll find six artisan food producers located in a charming converted coaching yard. With a butcher, baker, gelataria, co ee roastery, distillery and macaroon maker, the destination allows you to taste, explore and see how artisan products are made in Yorkshire today. Florian Poirot, the macaroon maker, is none other than the UK Pastry Champion, while Rare Bird Gin Distillery is award-winning, too, and both Bluebird Bakery and Roost Espresso Bar attract people from all over the county. If you want to dive deeper into the food scene in Malton, why not book onto one of the town’s Guided Food Tours. For somewhere to both stay and eat, The Talbot, a beautiful historic building looking over the town, is a great place to head.

Tom Naylor-Leyland is the director there, and the Fitzwilliam Estate has invested in The Talbot as one of the main drivers behind the food town with 26 beautifully designed rooms, a restaurant and the York House wedding venue. In July, The Talbot also plays host to Meadowfest, Malton’s popular boutique music festival set within the lovely riverside meadows.

PERFECT SITUATION

Speaking of lovely meadows, enjoying a picture perfect situation on the edge of the Howardian Hills, Malton certainly does beauty very well indeed. Despite having so many wonderful shops and eateries, and a great feeling of hustle and bustle, there are plenty of options for escaping into the countryside right on the doorstep. The Howardian Hills that border the town are an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there are numerous walks

you can do straight from Malton to really enjoy this area. Stay at Box BNB, which is perfectly situated just outside the village of Thornton-Le-Dale for an escape from the hustle and bustle to peace and tranquillity. If you want to combine both the foodie atmosphere and the countryside idyll, Malton’s unique Gourmet Wineathon takes you on the “tastiest 10k” around some of the best surrounding rural pathways. For walking and cycling, Malton spoils you. Why not make the most of the many nice footpaths that there are to follow through Malton Castle Gardens and along the River Derwent? Start your walk in the town centre and head east past the Lodge to the Malton Castle Gardens and the Roman Fort. The lovely five-acre gardens have a number of interesting flowers, plants and trees to see. After exploring the Roman Fort, you can cross the river and pick up a footpath along the Derwent. The Centenary Way long distance trail runs through the town for some longer walking routes, or you could follow the trail south along the River Derwent to the atmospheric ruins of Kirkham Abbey. Following it east will take you over the river to Norton-on-Derwent and then through the countryside to Settrington.

Or, if you’ve still not had enough of history and architecture, the famous Castle Howard is only a short drive away from Malton and makes for a wonderful afternoon out. Known as one of Britain’s finest private residences and stately homes, there are beautiful gardens to explore, the house to look around, as well as exhibitions, too. If you wanted to make it part of your Malton trip, you can do the lovely five-mile walk from the town, taking in the scenic countryside on the way.

They expanded to create menus and dishes for local yoga retreats (Little Yoga Company), business lunches and various other food markets across North Yorkshire and further afield. All the while, founder Kate Zaleska’s ethos was maintained: making delicious food using honest ingredients with passion and flavour, and perhaps most importantly, respecting the planet.

Sugar KING

Rich Myers, aka Mr Sprinkles, has been delivering sweet fixes to the people of Leeds for over a decade - and now he’s released a cookbook featuring his bonkers bakes

RICH
MYERS
PHOTO: ELLIS PARRINDER

Not long before the pandemic, the idea that you could order your favourite slab of chocolate cake to be delivered to your door at midnight seemed a little absurd. But before Deliveroo and Just Eat, there was Get Baked. Rich Myers set up the dessert delivery brand over ten years ago, from an idea he had to ‘fill the gap in the market’ while at Manchester Metropolitan University.

“Students would be enjoying themselves and drinking and whatever until the early hours and then they’d get the munchies,” he tells me. “Back then you could get

Chinese delivered and that sort of thing, but no-one was delivering cake.”

Initially Rich would bake from his mum’s kitchen, but then moved to a warehouse, or what we’d now refer to as a ‘dark kitchen’, in Leeds. The brand soon gained a loyal customer base and cult social media following thanks to Rich’s bonkers creations and witty photo captions.

In 2015, Rich put baking to one side for reasons, he tells me, he’d rather not go into, but the birth of his daughter, in 2021, was the catalyst for him to make a comeback with the opening of his first physical store in Headingley.

“It made me realise that I should be spending my time doing what I love,” says Rich, whose wife is expecting their

second child in June. “Fortunately, we already had a cult following in Leeds, so when the shop opened there was a readymade audience waiting in anticipation. It was really successful from the outset.”

Rich even managed to turn a sticky situation with Trading Standards into a positive after he was reported for using sprinkles from America containing the E127 food colouring, also known as Erythrosine, which is banned in the UK apart from in glazed cherries. A video with him ranting about the complaint subsequently went viral and gained him the nickname, “Mr Sprinkles”.

“I mean it was all totally ridiculous, I didn’t even know you could get illegal sprinkles and it’s not like these were contraband – you could buy them in sweet shops in London,” he explains. “Trading Standards were just doing their job and they were perfectly nice about it, but we had to stop using the sprinkles, which meant we couldn’t sell some of our products so it was a real pain.”

Desperate to find an alternative to the less vibrant sprinkles made in Britain, Rich decided to invent his own, which sell under the side brand Expen$ive sprinkles for £12 per 160g bottle.

“A lot of what we sell has a particular aesthetic and, to me, you can’t get that from British sprinkles – they just don’t look the same,” he says. “So, we now

have our own made in Costa Rica and they’ve been tested and they’re legal. They make us a very special blend which isn’t available anywhere else in the world.”

‘Sprinklegate’ contributed to demand for Rich’s wacky bakes skyrocketing and Get Baked has since expanded its delivery nationwide. It also spurred interest from publishers and Rich’s first cookbook featuring his most popular creations, including the Raspberry Glazed Donut Cookies at the centre of ‘Sprinklegate’, the brand’s famous pies and, for those who dare to try, a step-bystep guide to the signature bake, Bruce – a 24-layer giant chocolate sponge and ganache cake – was published in March. “Bruce is what we’re best known for and we sell lots of it,” says Rich. “It will be interesting to see the results of people attempting it at home as it’s not easy.”

But contrary to popular belief, the cake is not named after Bruce Bogtrotter – the character in Roald Dahl’s Matilda, who steals a slice of Miss Trunchbull’s cake and is punished by being forced to eat a huge chocolate cake in front of the whole school.

That’s Rich Myers’ top Yorkshire eats

JÖRO in Sheffield is a great restaurant and one of the best meals I’ve had in my life. The chef, Luke French, has been on The Great British Menu. Behind the curtain in Leeds, which has a Michelin star, is also a favourite.

Some of the best pizza you’ll find anywhere (and I’ve eaten pizza in many places) is at Pizza Loco in Roundhay in Leeds. And generally, for Italian, Stuzzy, which has branches in Harrogate and Leeds, is a winner.

For doughnuts head to Doh’hut in Leeds. It used to be based out of a food truck, but there’s now a store in Trevelyan Square.

chocolate stout made in partnership with Northern Monk. “He almost has his own business, perhaps he needs his own boardroom,” adds Rich in his jovial style. For someone who has been described as Britain’s rudest baker, the 34-yearold certainly doesn’t come across that way in person and I wonder if his straight-talking social media persona has been somewhat misconstrued.

“It’s a common misconception and a funny coincidence, but I’ve never read the book or seen the film,” he insists. “I can’t tell you exactly why it’s called Bruce because not even my wife knows that, but it is named after someone, just not Bruce Bogtrotter.”

The impressive cake has attracted a barrage of fans and spawned a number of side products including Bruce’s Balls (cake tru es made from Bruce), Jar of Bruce (Bruce’s components in a jar), Bruce Pudding (a chocolate pudding version served warm), and even a Bruce

“I’m not a rude person, I was brought up with very good manners and have always been respectful of people, but I’m not afraid to be myself,” insists Rich, admitting that he had been diagnosed with quite severe Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). “As a child, I suppressed a lot of what was me, but as I’ve got older I don’t care if people think I’m a bit weird or don’t like my style as there are plenty of people who do.

“There’s certainly a misconception that I’m o ensive, but I’m not. I guess it’s just my tone – I’m very straight talking, but that’s just a northern thing. And I am, absolutely, unapologetically northern.”

• 50g shallot brunoise

• 50g ginger, peeled and brunoise

• 50g chives, finely sliced

• 50g dill fronds, finely chopped

• 50g coriander stem, finely sliced

• 5g cumin, toasted and ground

• 5g ground black pepper

• 10g Maldon salt

• 1 lemon, zest of

• 50g crispy onions

METHOD

1 Make the ginger and turmeric oil by adding everything to the thermo at full speed for 8 mins until smooth. Pour o and leave to cool gently. Ideally, rest overnight, but you can also use it once cool.

2 Make the broth by adding all the ingredients to a pan and simmering

for half an hour. Steep for 4 hours, till cool. Strain and gently press.

3 Use a sharp mandolin to cut the shallots into 1mm rings, moving top to bottom. Submerge them in cold rapeseed oil in a pan, and gently bring up the heat. As the oil heats, stir every few minutes to avoid shallots clumping. Fry until the shallots turn a nut brown colour. Use a spider spatula to remove from the oil, and put on a towel lined tray to dry. They will continue to darken, to a golden colour. Store in an airtight container.

4 Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius. Wash the beetroot, rub with olive oil and sea salt, wrap in foil, and bake until the beetroot for 45-60 mins, depending on their size. Allow to cool, remove skins. Cut down into 3cm chunks.

5 Sweat the leeks, shallots, mushrooms, celery, garlic in extra virgin olive oil and salt until softened but not coloured, around 30 mins.

6 Add the beetroot and spices. Continue to cook for a further 5 mins or so. Add the celeriac and mushroom broth and bring up to a simmer. Blend to a smooth puree.

7 Preheat the oven to 160 degrees. Strain the beans and hang to remove water. Toss beans in extra virgin olive oil and toast in the oven for 15 mins. Allow to cool. Fold together with all remaining ingredients.

8 Serve by adding the soup to a bowl, add the bean topping and finish with a sprinkling of crispy shallots.

• 200g neutral oil (rapeseed)

• 100g spinach

• 5g Maldon salt

For the green olive salsa

• 100g jalapeno oil

• 50g shallots, diced

• 50g chopped chives

• 50g minced green olive

• 4g ground white pepper

• 4g Maldon salt

METHOD

1 Preheat the oven to 200 degrees celsius.

2 Make the jalapeno oil by blending all ingredients at high speed, until smooth. Set aside, you’ll need this when you make the green olive salsa.

3 Rinse the brown rice in cold water. Cover with 1 litre of cold fresh water in a pan, and bring up to a simmer. After a few minutes, when no longer crunchy but not yet soft, still with a bit of chew, strain and rinse with cold water, and leave to cool and dry on a cloth lined tray.

4 Using a hand blender, blend the miso and vinegar together. Stream in the oil slowly to form a thick emulsion. Cover the squash wedges in the emulsion, then roast in the oven for 12 mins.

5 Sweat shallot, shiitake, garlic, chicory in extra virgin olive oil and salt, until softened but with no colour, around 30 mins.

6 Add in cavolo nero, saute for a few minutes until the cavolo nero is slightly wilted. Cool for a further 30 mins until totally soft.

7 Add the citrus juice and zest, and cook until juice has reduced to a syrup.

8 Make the green olive salsa by blitzing the jalapeno oil and all the other ingredients together in a blender until it forms a chunky mixture.

9 Turn the oven down to 140 degrees celsius and toast the pine nuts in an even layer for 30 minutes.

10 Serve by adding the brown rice and braised cavolo nero to a plate, top with the squash followed by the tapenade, and lastly the toasted pine nuts.

In good TASTE

The tasting menu shines at Whitley Bay’s hidden gem, The Roxburgh

Weekends in Whitley Bay are drawing diners from across the UK, thanks to The Roxburgh and its tantalizing tasting menu. Guests are served a seven-course tasting repertoire of dishes, but with no printed menu to guide them, so the meal is an immersive and exciting experience.

The use of a set tasting menu means diners relinquish control of their meal into the hands of owner and Head Chef Gary Dall, who fronts up a small dedicated and talented team at The Roxburgh. Gary trained via the Jamie Oliver Fifteen scheme and cut his teeth at the Copthorne Hotel and Jesmond Dene House, before immersing himself in the vibrant foodie culture in Sydney working for ex Banc chefs Justin North and Colin Fassnidge. He then worked as a personal chef for musicians and bands on tour, cooking for Shakira, Van Morrison, Sting, Al Green, Girls Aloud, Muse, Alice Cooper and Kasabian.

It’s no surprise, then, that there's a dash of rock n roll to The Roxburgh, something a little di erent to the norm for a topnotch eatery. Gary’s aim was to take a little something from the restaurants and bars

he has visited and worked in around the world and blend them into a truly unique establishment. Guests enjoy a cosy, relaxed atmosphere with a soundtrack blending soul, R n’ B, indie and 80s music, amongst some of the best rare tracks of the last 90 years – no quiet clink of cutlery here. The Roxburgh is only open on Friday and Saturday nights to showcase the tasting menu and serves only 18 covers on each evening. On some Sunday evenings the restaurant hosts ‘The Occasional Supper Club’, showcasing and collaborating with guest chefs to explore di erent themes and styles of cooking.

Gary grows most of the herbs, flowers, fruit and vegetables used to create his tasting menu, so it’s all highly seasonal, changing every three to four weeks. Suppliers are sourced from the local

area wherever possible, which gives The Roxburgh team an enviable selection of farmers and growers to tap into.

That local area includes the North Sea coastline, the Scottish borders and the sweeping and diverse countryside between Whitley Bay, the Northern Pennines and Northumberland National Park, meaning guests sample North Yorkshire Texel lamb, retired dairy cow from County Durham and native Lindisfarne oysters.

The multi-course tasting menu format, with all the dishes planned in advance and with a fixed number of covers each day, means Gary can predict the amount of ingredients needed for every single course which keeps waste to a minimum. The team can estimate the ingredients required for each meal with precision, and they aim to utilise virtually every part of the vegetables and meat cuts used. For anything which truly can’t be used, there’s a compost heap waiting which, in time, produces a rich mulch to feed the restaurant’s vegetable beds and fruit bushes.

hey were the first band to sell seven million copies of successive albums, Pyromania and Hysteria in the US –Def Leppard were once a force to be reckoned with in the rock genre.

Overnight SUCCESS T

The British band – consisting of lead singer Joe Elliott, bassist Rick Savage, drummer Rick Allen, and guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell – have sold over 100 million records, won a place in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and played stadiums worldwide. You’d expect the adulation and fame to go to one’s head. As I chat to bassist Rick Savage, before he jets o on a stadium tour with Mötley Crüe and Poison, it becomes apparent that the She eldborn star is humbled by the band’s achievements.

“It’s absolutely amazing that we are as popular as we ever were,” he says. “We’re performing in stadiums and people are still talking about us, streaming, and downloading our songs. You can’t compete with the new kids, but it’s incredible to think we’re still doing what we love – it doesn’t feel like 40 odd years have passed!

“It’s an honour and we’re grateful that we get on as people and that’s the bottom line. It doesn’t feel like a job when you’re with your mates. There are so many facets to being in a band. As we say: there is more to being in a band than being in a band,” he laughs.

What is the secret to their longevity? “Having respect for each other – the friendship and the camaraderie,” he says. “The feeling of being in a gang, which really appeals to kids aged 10 or 11 – it’s still appealing to us in our late 50s and early 60s. I am not sure what that says about us,” he smiles, “but at least we have that in common.”

Def Leppard formed in 1976 and rose to chart-topping fame in the early 1980s with hits such as Pour Some Sugar on Me and Foolin’. Rick, known as ‘Sav’, grew up in Crookes and attended Tapton Secondary school, west of She eld city centre. He recalls happy memories growing up.

“I remember spending summers at Weston Park and The BoleHills. It was a happy childhood,” he smiles. “The summers seemed to last forever, and the days always seemed sunny. We all lived on the same street – a clichéd family atmosphere.”

SAM AND RICK SAVAGE
She eld’s most famous rock band Def Leppard rose to dizzying heights in the 1980s, and they show no signs of slowing down, bassist Rick Savage says

The 63-year-old rockstar, who lived in Dublin for a few years, moved back to She eld in 2001, with wife Paige, sons Scott and Tyler, and Jordan (Paige's daughter from a previous relationship). Today he resides in the village of Dore with Paige.

“My roots are established. Don’t get me wrong –there are cities in England I love, but there’s something about She eld. It’s a big city with a small city feel to it. It’s always had a little bit of everything for me.”

Rick’s closeness to his family is evident – he recently launched a fashion brand, Overnight Angels Crew, with his son Scott – merging their love of music and fashion. The brand name was born from a place of Rick’s nostalgia, inspired by Ian Hunter’s title track on his 1977 album, Overnight Angels

“We started developing the brand during the pandemic,” Rick explains. “Scott has always had an eye for fashion, and we thought it’d be great to do something together. The Overnight Angels Crew is more street, urban style and OAC X Special Projects is my line – more classic rock ‘n’ roll with high end sophistication, not strictly biker stu , it would appeal to a more rock-oriented crowd. We’re delighted with the way it has been received. It’s still early days, but I honestly think there is a niche for it. I’ll be wearing some of my line on tour!”

As for the 2023 world tour, Rick is more than primed to hit the stage. “To be able to say that you’ve played Wembley Stadium is pretty cool. As an Englishman it doesn’t get much bigger – I’m really looking forward to that and Bramall Lane, She eld. It’s my hometown, a sort of homecoming – that will be a big occasion. It has a lot of meaning.”

What has Leeds market got to do with a beautiful, independent ladies boutique in Hull? Well, it’s where Wat’s On all started...

Afarmer’s wife with three young children decided she didn’t have enough to do so, not only was she the proprietor of a launderette by day, she decided to party plan clothes in the evening. And, so, Joyce Clappison’s entrepreneurial career began.

Sourcing her stock from a gentleman on Leeds market, Joyce soon outgrew party planning and took on the lease of a small shop in Market Weighton, owned by Lady Manton of Houghton Hall whose maiden name was Watson – hence the name Wat’s On. It wasn’t long before Wat’s On itself outgrew the premises and, after a few years occupying premises in Swanland, Joyce moved Wat’s On to an old hardware shop on Willerby Road, Hull, where it remains to this day.

Joyce has never been one to let the grass grow under her feet though and, in her ninth decade on the planet, Wat’s On Boutique has recently celebrated being 50-yearsold and is still expanding, both in square footage and the number of designer brands stocked. Acquiring next door last year and after a full refurbishment, there are now five large rooms of beautiful womenswear, shoes, bags, headwear, and jewellery.

Whether you’re walking the dog or receiving a Damehood, Wat’s On Boutique has beautiful clothes in sizes 8–26 for every day and every occasion. A casual lunch with friends, being Mum of the Bride or Groom, or just a simple wardrobe refresh, they have two floors of di erent styles and colours for you to choose from. A relaxed, informal atmosphere awaits you to browse the rails.

The Wat's On team o er a truly unique and personal shopping experience and take pride in o ering first class bespoke customer service. Every member of the team has a history in helping women choose what is right for them; from being head of perfumery and beauty for a large department store, owning their own fashion store for 25 years, owning a designer shoe store for over 20 years, to being part of the Wat’s On team for nearly 40 years. They have the knowledge and expertise on hand to help, and their friendly approach immediately puts you at ease and ensures you not only pick the right outfit for you, but that you enjoy the entire experience along the way.

HIGH END FOOD

James Ellis and Jason Shaw, from the Yorkshire Dales, have set up a healthy eating online subscription service. The former tells us more about Elevated Food For Life

68 ABSOLUTELY magazines
JAMES ELLIS

Q What’s your background in nutrition?

A I was born in a pub in a South Yorkshire mining village – literally, in the rooms above the pub – so I’ve been around food, cooking and the hospitality business since day one. My mum loves food and is a pretty decent cook, so I was always interested in it; then, when I was about 10-years-old my world changed radically. Mum and dad got divorced and my mum took my sister and I o to live in Greece, pre-empting Shirley Valentine by about 10 years! She still jokes to this day that when I was 13 I asked for a food mixer for my birthday… so an interest in food and cooking has always been there. Fast forward a number of years and I was working as a journalist on national newspapers in London. After many years, I’d re-kindled my relationship with my dad – but not for long as he ended up dying far too young after complications following an operation. They were complications exacerbated by a lifestyle that included heavy drinking and smoking, little exercise and a pretty

poor diet. His passing prompted me to look at my own lifestyle – and I realised I was following suit. After a few aborted attempts, I quit smoking, cut down on booze and got back into the gym. The transformation was quite literally life changing. Not only did I lose a tonne of weight and looked a decade younger, but I also changed careers, becoming first a personal trainer, and then a nutritionist and health coach.

Q When did you first meet Jason Shaw?

A Jason and I met at the school gates. We live in a small village near Otley, which has a surprising number of creative people in it. Our children became part of a wider group of friends and we also all connected as parents and became firm friends. Within that, I was a nutritionist and a keen amateur cook, Jason was a professional chef who wanted to know more about nutrition, and so we’d share a lot of information and do experimental cooking sessions together. One Easter we even dug a pit in our back garden, built a fire in it, then when it was down to the embers put a whole lamb in and buried it to slow cook overnight… Just because we wanted to see if we could do a Greek-style kleftikolamb in the way it was originally done by rustlers in the Greek mountains.

Q What inspired you to launch Elevated?

A We’ve got children the same age and both of us aim to be around for them for as long as possible. Jason won’t mind me saying that his son Christian is on the spectrum, and he asked me a lot about foods that might help Christian. We started playing around, developing some recipes and we kept coming back to this idea of elevating food – on my side asking ‘how nutritious is this?’ and from Jason’s keeping his core che ng principles, that food has to have three Ts and a P to be successful: taste, temperature, texture and presentation. We thought it could work as a concept: food that is cooked from scratch, designed to give as many nutrients as possible, reducing common allergens so accessible to all, simple to cook and tasty. So we tried it out on some

friends for about 4-5 months, they loved it and so we decided to launch it as a service.

Q In a nutshell, what do you o er?

A We describe ourselves as a Netflix of health-giving video recipes. When you sign up, you get access to all the back catalogue, but we add new recipes each month, almost in a magazine-like way so everything is seasonal. You also get what we call Brilliant Bases that allow you to spin o lots of other dishes quickly from one core recipe. Then there are skills tips videos to teach you how to cook like a boss, articles that demystify nutrition and o er lifestyle tips, a private Facebook group and a monthly ‘ask us anything’ Q&A. Oh, and people get two e-books when they sign up: The Foodies Guide to Vitamins and Minerals and The High Protein Playbook.

Q Who is Elevated aimed at?

A Everyone really – but more than anything, it works for people like us. Busy parents who want to give their family the best nutrition we can a ord in the least time possible. If we can take the stress out of meal times, help people reduce the amount of processed food they eat and, perhaps, let them fall in love with food again, we’ll have done a job to be proud of elevatedfoodforlife.com

WALK TO WELLNESS

You'll feel the benefits of walking from your head down to your toes

THE DOCTOR'S KITCHEN

Listen to Dr Rupy Aujla and guests discuss the ins and outs of nutritional medicine and learn how to cook your way to a healthier lifestyle. thedoctorskitchen.com

Fitness is often so focused on going faster, getting stronger and pushing yourself harder, but what if the best thing you can do for your body is to slow down? Walking is a form of exercise often relegated to those over 80, but evidence shows that even the young and healthy will feel the benefits of going for a brief stroll. Walking is the most studied form of exercise and an overwhelming amount of research demonstrates its positive impact on everything from heart health to how stressed we are and how well we sleep at night.

Health experts agree that frequent walking is instrumental in preventing and managing a variety of common health conditions including heart disease, stroke and type II diabetes. It has been shown by multiple studies to lower your risk of premature death and strengthen your immune system, one even finding that walkers took 43% fewer sick days on average. Walking has the lowest injury rate of all forms of exercise, which makes it a safe and sustainable way to improve and maintain mobility while protecting the joints that are most susceptible to osteoarthritis. Going for a walk to clear your head is a well-

trodden path, but research backs the mood-boosting power of a brisk stroll. It is e ective in the management of stress, anxiety and depression and there is evidence that going on regular walks even changes the structure of your brain and helps increase the volume of grey matter, which is a measure of brain health. It may even make you smarter, as several trials have found that walking can improve your memory and cognitive function, both short-term and long-term. All of these benefits only increase as your pace and distance do, so even if you are already healthy, walking may be the secret to staying that way.

DIFFERENT

Ihad worked for a number of smallmedium sized architectural practices in the south-east and in Yorkshire, working on predominantly residential, healthcare and commercial projects.

I also worked as a Design Manager for a residential development company for a number of years.

Cathy worked for a number of design orientated small architectural practices in the south-east and Yorkshire focussing on University, community projects as well as high specification residential schemes. Cathy also retrained as a Design Technology teacher and worked at a secondary school for a number of years.

I met Cathy at University in Nottingham in the 1990s where we both studied architecture and we got married in 2005. Cathy joined me at Niche Design after three years in 2013. We’ve always focused on di erent aspects of the business, with Cathy heading up the technical side of the business and I work on the concept designs and construction stages. People often ask how we cope working with each other (as they could never work with their partners), but we’ve never found it too di cult and managed to separate our work and home life to achieve a reasonable life/work balance – although there is always room for improvement!

We had the opportunity to set up the business in 2010 when we were asked to

design a residential development on the outskirts of Leeds (involving the conversion of redundant farm buildings to four houses) which became our fi rst project. Like many architects, we’d always been interested in working for ourselves and developing our own design practice, so it proved an opportunity too good to turn down. We’ve never regretted the decision even though it’s not always been plain sailing.

We wanted to o er a high-quality architectural service specifically to help homeowner clients and developers of small residential schemes. We don’t work in any other sector, so have built up an expertise in working on residential projects, which requires a di erent set of skills to commercial projects.

For many clients this will be the fi rst time they have carried out building work and it will be a significant investment (time and money) so we think it is important not to rush the process. We have a five-step approach to new enquiries, which involves listening carefully to understand our clients’ aims and objectives, agreeing an outline brief and preparing a pre-design report, which outlines constraints and opportunities prior to us starting any design work. We don’t want to run before we can walk.

Most clients that contact us have seen our work on our website or social media and have liked our design approach. This

can be described as contemporary but contextual architecture, often inspired by the site or existing buildings and their surroundings. Usually it’s about making buildings suitable for modern family living and connecting the inside and outside and creating clean, bright and practical spaces. Due to our location, we have worked on a lot of existing and often old (historic) buildings and I think we have become well-known for imaginative conversions of and additions to existing structures, often contrasting new glazed structures with old buildings.

We are based on the edge of West and North Yorkshire (Ilkley) and have worked in the major cities and towns as well as in remote locations within the Yorkshire Dales and Moors National Parks. We’re equally happy working in urban and rural

THE YORKSHIRE FARMHOUSE

 We were asked by our clients and their concept designer (Helen Hughes Design) to deliver the technical design of this project together with the supervision of the construction. We worked with Helen and our clients to ensure that we followed their concept whilst ensuring that the complicated and elegant design could be achieved. The former farm buildings incorporating farmhouse, barns, stables and outbuildings have been connected to form a spectacular family home with guest and leisure accommodation including a fully glazed pool hall.

LISTED BUILDING RENOVATION

locations, both of which bring their di erent challenges and design opportunities. It is fascinating to see how architectural styles vary across the county, often based on the local materials that were readily available at the time. I spent my teenage years in York. Whilst I was inspired by the historic fabric of the city, my favourite building was the 1960s extension of York Theatre Royal (designed by modernist architect Patrick Gwynne and recently refurbished by De Matos Ryan). This is a beautiful concrete and glass extension which contrasts fabulously with the historic Grade II listed theatre.

Looking ahead, we’re working on a number of one o , new build houses in various locations across Yorkshire as well as conversion, refurbishment and extension projects. Every project has its own challenges and exciting opportunities and ensures that work is never dull.

We’ve invested a good deal of time recently in training in low-carbon, low-energy design, in response to the climate emergency. We’ve become members of the AECB (Association for Environment Conscious Building) and we will be designing and certifying projects that meet AECB standards for high performance low-carbon buildings. We’re not stopping there, and we are aiming to become Passivhaus certified in the near future which we are really excited about. Together with developing our use of 3D technology we are looking forward to a bright and more sustainable future.

nichedesignarchitects.com

 This isolated 300-year-old Grade II listed farmhouse within the Yorkshire Dales National Park had been abandoned in the early 1900s and was almost a ruin when our clients bought the house at auction. The house already had permission for reoccupation, but we subsequently applied for a more ambitious scheme which involved an underground extension set back into the soloing hillside and a more open plan layout. Despite the isolated location we were fortunate to secure the services of a good local builder although it was the first time they had heard of shadow gaps and polished concrete, but now they are experts. We like to think it was the first use of polished concrete in the National Park!

RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT, YORK

 We were asked by the owner of an Edwardian stable block on the outskirts of York to convert and extend the existing buildings to form five large homes, based around the original central courtyard. The challenge was to retain some of the original features and spaces of the buildings whilst creating modern open plan family homes.

BOLDLY go

Q What initially excited you about taking on this project?

A When the client contacted me, it was as they were buying the house and they were keen to inject new life into this beautiful Arts and Crafts home. It was great to understand the family’s interests and their dynamic before taking on this project as that’s always fundamental to my design process before I start a new project. Every project involves me really getting to know my clients so that I can create a space that really works for them; a haven to retreat to at the end of a busy day. This family are incredibly social and allowed me total creative freedom in their home, meaning I could edge them outside of their comfort zone and inject lots of colour and texture into each room that reflected their personalities, such as the hummingbird wallpaper in the bathroom and the disco ball in the sitting room.

Situated in Wharfe Valley, the stunning Sugden property is an Edwardian house with tones of vibrancy and pattern.
ToIlkley based Ann Marie Cousins explains the thinking behind the interior design

Q What was your brief?

A A busy family home, the brief was to create a versatile space that was suitable for both entertaining and everyday needs, whilst also reflecting the homeowners’ engaging personalities through a mix of colour and pattern. The clients were keen to move away from the neutral scheme of their last home and asked us to guide them towards braver choices.

Q How did you look to incorporate the personalities of the owners?

A As the homeowners often socialised and entertained at home, I wanted to ensure the space was adaptable so it was perfect for hosting as well as being a functional day-to-day home. I therefore really wanted each room to tell a di erent story and o er a wow-factor whenever they had friends

and family round, but also provided plenty of storage to use all year round. The brief was to create rooms which were the perfect spaces to relax when they were chilling out after a busy day, but equally could accommodate large gatherings when their adult children came to visit or when they threw large parties. The use of rich colour gave heart to the generous rooms and created welcoming spaces, while creating spaces which felt like them.

Q Were there any challenges to overcome?

A We worked on a tight timeframe, first meeting the client in early September and handed over the scheme in time for Christmas. It was an incredibly intense project and was only possible by working closely with the trades and thinking through all the details, from tile and grout specifications to lighting plans.

Q The colour really stands out, as it does in many of your projects. Why is colour so important to you?

A Colour boosts our mood and provides a more stimulating and interesting environment, so that the space reflects our clients’ style. By guiding them to consider colours or pieces that they might not have considered, we create spaces which might initially surprise them but ultimately feel very much like home. Colour excites me so much and I love to guide our clients on how colours work together, to change the tone and the mood of the rooms.

Q Can you tell us about some of the more unique pieces of furniture you implemented in this project?

A We love adding bespoke elements to our projects, from working with amazing artists like creating a scheme around Louise

Hepworth Wood’s art in the sitting room, to custom soft furnishings, complemented by pieces of furniture which just finish o the project perfectly. On this job, we added some beautiful details, from the super luxe Jonathan Adler cabinet in the rich green sitting room, while injecting joyful exuberance in the disco ball which complements it. This client told us that every time she walks into these rooms, she gets goosebumps on her arms and can’t believe that they’re hers. That’s always our goal – to create rooms which our clients adore. Our clients loving their homes long after we wrap up a project is always our focus throughout a project.

Q Why did you introduce elements of biophilia into the project?

A I always try and include hints of greenery and the outdoors within my designs, whether that’s physically in the form of houseplants

or via interesting patterns and materials for curtains and cushions for example. For this home, we introduced an array of colour and pattern into the living room especially including the tropical print curtains, the dark green, velvet armchair and forest green walls – which really make a statement. Bold colours naturally connect us with the outdoors, so I wanted to be bold in this living room to reflect the garden which can be enjoyed from the large window.

Q How did you approach the master bedroom and en-suite?

A I wanted to continue the rich colour palette and Art Deco details from the living space to the upstairs, so included gold and blue within the colour palette for a cohesive look and feel. As the bedroom has lots of natural light, I opted for a bold, dark blue ceiling paired with a sea green upholstered

bed, blue and pink scatter cushions and a stunning hand-painted mural which spans the wall behind the bed. The dark blue was continued into the bathroom in the form of a navy painted ceiling and a navy double vanity unit, which I paired with gold accents in the form of the hummingbird wallpaper.

Q What’s the idea behind the gold tree mural?

A The mural by Daniel Bland of Bland Design was the starting point for the room, as the client had long been a fan of his, but she was unclear about how to incorporate his work into the room. We talked about how she loved Chinoiserie and spoke to Daniel about how to combine it with his style. We had several meetings with him and the client to discuss how to make the most of the space and the beautiful period details. By working together, we decided on the tree mural with the hummingbirds and we added the gold accents to increase the sense of opulence. We added further gold accents through the room to give cohesion to the master suite, and continued this glamourous tone throughout the home. The home is an Arts and Crafts house, so the client was keen to have a nod towards the early 20th century in her new home in the form of the scallop headboard.

Q What do you love most about the finished project?

A It was great to incorporate the clients’ existing dining table and inject a new lease of life in it by having it French polished. We added new chairs in a vibrant yellow velvet, which tied in the clients’ much loved artwork, which we reframed. We added the beautiful walnut sideboard by Karpa, whose brass legs complemented the sputnik pendant light over the dining table.

Independent SPIRIT

Jonathan Spencer, founder of Rustic Revive, on creating furniture unique to you

Q When did Rustic Revive start and what inspired its launch?

A Rustic Revive started back in 2016 from a tiny outhouse at my home address. I used to work full time as a HGV technician on shifts, which was very hard to juggle. It’s very true what they say – you get out what you put in. I’ve always had a passion for design and making things, being a welder in my full-time job turned out to be very handy as I was able to adapt and develop this skill into furniture making.

In 2020 I took the jump, took on an industrial unit and quit my full-time job to focus 100% on Rustic Revive. After a year we outgrew the premises and moved to a larger unit, which allowed us to have a showroom that’s open to the public. This is great as it allows customers to physically see what we do and see the quality for themselves.

Q How do you believe you are di erent from other furniture companies?

A Unlike a lot of major furniture stores we hand craft all of our furniture on site from scratch, using high quality materials. We work with the customer, so they get exactly what they want and don’t send anything out unless it's perfect. We pride ourselves on good customer service –our reviews speak for themselves.

Q How does your bespoke service work?

A Simply get in touch via any of our platforms and we will ask all the right questions to make sure you get exactly what you want. For example, if you have a specific space in your home or business and need either a custom size unit or table etc, we can make sure your commission fits the space. As well as this we have all our products on our website to purchase in standard sizes.

We can work around building works and home improvements so you get the furniture when you need it. When it's ready we personally deliver it and put the piece in place. To place and order it's only 25% deposit upfront then nothing to pay till completion.

Q Can you give us an example of a unique commission you have taken on?

A We have done some amazing projects from small alcove units to full restaurant refits. Last year we designed some stunning outdoor picnic benches and a custom table swing set for Newcastle Quayside. We have also put these in restaurants, they really do stand out.

Q What tips would you o er anyone looking to buy a bespoke piece of furniture?

A Contact us via any platform or give us a call, if you have seen something you like and can’t get it the right size this is the perfect time to contact us. You can send us pictures of items you have seen so we can see what

you are looking for and what style you like. If you are close enough visit our showroom and we can sit down with you and discuss the piece. Don’t be fooled by poor quality furniture that won’t last from large stores, have peace of mind and buy from Rustic Revive for furniture that will last a lifetime.

Q What interior trends can we expect in 2023?

A Industrial style furniture is here to stay, it never looks out of place in any setting and can be designed and made into so many di erent styles. We see it in person in so many homes and businesses. rusticrevive.co.uk

SIGNAL BOOST

Frustrated with your home internet?

A WiFi Mesh System could be the solution, says Gary Newson of NETGEAR

WiFi is a fundamental part of life, for both leisure and work. WiFi and internet are so closely related that many people don’t make the distinction between them. But you depend on your internet service provider's router to supply WiFi, and you may be disappointed with the signal strength. Especially if you have a larger home, or a garden which extends some distance from your house. Are you relying on the lagging router from your current internet provider to get strong WiFi everywhere? Have you tried wireless repeaters, but were dissatisfied with results?

WiFi Mesh systems are the solution to spread stronger signals throughout your

home and garden. Unlike WiFi repeaters, which only extend your main router's signal, Mesh systems create a new, boosted wireless network across your entire home.

Mesh systems give you the ability to fully enjoy the internet speeds you have subscribed for, thanks to a WiFi up to ten times faster. They are usually based on two or more units, which create a single, reliable WiFi network, expandable with additionional satellites. Connected devices are handed o seamlessly to the unit with the strongest signal, making Mesh WiFi ideal for large homes and businesses with WiFi 'dead spots'.

For today’s needs as well as tomorrow’s, premium WiFi products are easy to install and use; and they o er the speeds and capacity to support your family’s evolving needs. Premium WiFi upgrades your home, opening new possibilities,

and elevating the things you already love. Imagine your hobby, favourite activity, anything you’re passionate about, taken to the next level with high-speed WiFi. Netgear’s Orbi WiFi 6E Mesh Systems bring unparalleled performance based on cutting edge, patented technology. On top of that, the units are elegant enough to fit unobtrusively into your décor and secure enough to automatically shield your family from external threats such as hackers and identity thieves.

NETGEAR Orbi 960 series Mesh System: No-compromise, best-in-class performance, capacity and range

The Orbi RBKE963 Mesh system features best-in-class, lightning-fast WiFi Internet access to homes of up to 7,500 square feet, with packages available for further coverage of up to 15,500 sq. ft. The Orbi 960 is also available in stylish white or black designs, making it a welcome addition to any home, and with up to 200 devices even the most demanding smart homes are covered.

If you're tired of weak WiFi signals and slow internet speeds, consider a WiFi Mesh System like NETGEAR's Orbi 960 series. You'll enjoy lightning-fast, wall-to-wall WiFi access, seamless network operation, and the ability to expand coverage as needed. Shop online for the white or black edition today. TECHNOLOGY HAS CHANGED HOW CHILDREN ARE TAUGHT

There’s a big birthday here, a 30th. However, it’s sadly not mine, but that of Laidlaw Education. We are now in our 30th anniversary year and are a long way from those first lessons around the kitchen table, with our first new-born baby asleep upstairs. It has been good to look forward to all the plans that we have in store and to reflect on our journey and, on a wider perspective, how things have changed – or not – in the world of education. Perhaps one of the biggest changes in the early 90s was the beginnings of the teaching of the National Curriculum. For those of you who are interested, the first elements of the National Curriculum were introduced in September 1989 as one aspect of the Education Reform Act of 1988 under the eye of Kenneth Baker. Nowadays, it is di cult to imagine school education without the structure of the National Curriculum, but has it improved the education of each child? Without doubt the structure of the plan ensures that all teachers know what they should teach and a clear plan is always important.

However, having worked through the preNational Curriculum days at the very start of my career and seen the changes that have been made through the decades, I can’t help wondering if there are elements that have been lost in the process. Like everything in education, drawing from the best of all parts leads to the best of experiences and outcomes for all children. I have seen wonderful inspiring teachers trying to continue to be inspirational whilst combining their unique skills with the limitations of the National Curriculum. I’ve seen children overcome by the constant testing and others who deem themselves “no good” as they compare themselves with their peers. The National Curriculum has enabled weaker teachers to teach better, but perhaps exceptional teachers have been less free to let their creative brains inspire.

Of course, so much more has changed too: IT, laptops and, latterly, Zoom and Teams lessons being one such area of development.

So, what of the world of tuition – a word that I hate, by the way. Well, that has certainly changed, too. Thirty years ago, any extra help that children needed after school and in addition to school was usually delivered by

Miss, Mrs or Mr Teacher who lived down the road. There were a few agencies, but there wasn’t an “industry”. Today, there are scores of agencies and companies abounding o ering all sorts of tuition services and making great promises. I have witnessed huge numbers of slightly anxious parents feeling that they must add this to their children’s list of activities and are cajoled into hours of extra tuition that may frankly not be necessary, required or best for the child.

Tuition has become a career choice for many graduates and, to be honest, a potentially very lucrative one for many, particularly for some who are less scrupulous and who have very little or even no teaching experience. Sometimes my heart aches for the wellmeaning parents who think that this is the answer to their child’s future success. Having been in the tuition world throughout these developing decades, I remain as confident as ever that it should be something that is used wisely and it is only right to guide parents as to when and how much extra help is required – integrity at all times, not profit at all costs.

So, in essence, there has been progress and development in all areas of education – they are pockets of excellence, but there have also been disappointments. Education has always swung like a barometer of ideas, best practice and opinions, back and forth. The truth is that there is a middle path that draws on the best of all aspects. Policies and ideas will ebb and flow, but at the centre is – or should be – the child. In our ever more complex world, this can sometimes become sidelined. And a final word to you as parents, and to myself, too: trust your own judgement as to what is best for your children and their education, in all its forms.

Sue Laidlaw is founder of Laidlaw Education LLP. Sue and her team o er educational advice, lessons and courses for children of all ages through their centres, including Laidlaw Hall supporting children with special needs, and the Laidlaw Virtual Academy. WELL READ

We speak to three subject experts about how they encourage pupils to embrace the written word

Q Given we live in a world of technologyfull of streaming and gaming - how do you aim to encourage your pupils to read?

A We’ve introduced a reading dog (Indie) and this has been a great success with our younger children. It has increased the confidence of reluctant readers by having a non-judgemental audience. The children are purely reading for pleasure with no one pointing out mistakes or questioning them on the text. As they became more confident, we’ve seen their reading become more animated with more expression –

they can’t wait to go and read now! We also have class time specifically to enjoy sharing a book together and a specific library time where the children go and choose books that they can then take home and share with parents and siblings.

Q Do the children love special events?

A We do several initiatives and activities each year which bring books to life and spark imagination. We have a whole school project around a single book, for example this year we used the ‘The Dot’ by Peter Reynolds. All age groups from nursery upwards completed mini projects which were then shared with the rest of the school in an assembly. These encompassed all areas of the curriculum including maths challenges and discussions

that led to children sharing their rainbow moments. This World Book Day the children were challenged to create their own ‘Book in a Box’ where they created threedimensional scenes or settings from a book.

Q What does the rest of the school year hold in store for you?

A As the better weather is setting in, we are able to get out more to our woodland area for Forest School Sessions. This is a fantastic space where children can explore and be creative. Being in this natural space helps the children when it comes to their writing too, for example Year 1 acted out part of Little Red Riding Hood, filmed it then used it back in the classroom to write their own settings.

RACHEL CAPPER, HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL, THE MOUNT SCHOOL YORK mountschoolyork.co.uk

Q Does your school normally mark World Book Day?

A At The Mount School we celebrate World Book Day every year. In Junior School, the children were invited to dress up as their favourite characters from Matilda to Zog, the classrooms were filled with an assortment of recognisable faces from the children’s most loved stories. In the Senior School, sta and pupils displayed posters detailing the books they are currently reading and took part in a book swap during their lunch.

Our junior pupils not only have access to our dedicated primary library, but also the whole school library. It is a wonderfully traditional part of the school steeped in history, it lends itself well to a space where girls can get lost in a book and let their imaginations wander.

Q How do you encourage your pupils to read?

A Technology is a useful tool particularly in education; however, the importance of reading for children cannot be underestimated. We know that reading for pleasure can benefit a child’s education, social and cognitive development, their wellbeing, and their mental health. What is more rewarding is that our pupils also see the benefits of reading and want to share their love of literature.

Earlier this year, three Year 6 pupils hosted their own reading competition, ‘The Big Read Scheme’. The competition was constructed entirely by the girls themselves, with them taking into consideration everything from promotion to the logistics of the competition, and the winning prize. They took great care to ensure the competition was accessible to all. Agnes,

one of the organisers, commented: “I thought it was good to include everyone from Year 6 right down the little ones in Pre-School. Each year had di erent competitions to complete, 10 pages for the little ones, 20 pages for Year 2 and so on.”

CHRISTEPHER HALD, HEAD OF INFANT JUNIOR SCHOOL, SHEFFIELD GIRLS’ GDST she eldhighschool.org.uk

Q Does your school normally mark World Book Day each year?

A Yes we do – usually it is the typical ‘dress up as your favourite character from a book’ day, however we also tend to have some very creative activities or themes connected to our celebration of WBD. We have, in the past, focused on BAME authors celebrating the written and spoken word, using recorded readings from the authors themselves, and having our pupils perform their favourite passages or parts of the book within their class group. Women authors or stories with girls and women as the central character always feature strongly

of course. We also have activities such as poster competitions and design a book cover. A particular favourite recently was the challenge to dress a potato as a character from your favourite book! Our School Librarian, Miss Russell, usually hosts a book fair during the week of World Book Day.

Q What do the children enjoy most about these events?

A The opportunity to share their reading experiences and hear about what their friends are reading is such a fantastic way to develop our pupils’ enthusiasm for books. They come away from World Book Day fizzing with excitement about what they want to read next.

Reading is central in our creative curriculum, with class novels, poetry and playscripts used to explore language, story and structure connected to the creative themes. Our pupils enjoy weekly sessions in our bright, colourful and well-stocked library, overseen by our Infant and Junior Librarian. We certainly don’t have a silent library, and the animated chatter and conversations about good reads demonstrates the passion our pupils have for their favourite books and authors.

Q How important do you think reading awareness days are?

A Instilling a love of reading is a vital element of educational development, and the earlier the better. Reading awareness days are a fantastic way to celebrate our pupils’ genuine love of reading. Whilst we recognise that not everyone will turn into a dedicated ‘bookworm’ the mechanics of reading: phonics, decoding, recognition and reading with understanding – that is using inference, empathy, analysing, evaluating – are essential foundations for learning in every subject.

LEADING THE WAY

Supporting young girls to identify, develop and leverage their strengths from an early age can make a huge di erence in the way they view themselves, interact with others and lead their lives.

At Wakefield Girls’, there is a shared belief that big futures start early and the more depth and variety they o er as ways to help empower girls, the better. Early years is the time when children learn at the most significant rate and so encouraging leadership qualities and developing those skills early on is really important.

The school begins teaching girls to reach their potential as capable and strong leaders through a Little Leaders programme. This programme gives girls leadership

opportunities and a platform from which they can learn skills and grow their confidence in a nurturing early years education environment. It is the way their pupils go on to great things after their journey on the 'Wakefield Way'. Happily empowering girls is the mission at Wakefield Girls’ and sharing how the next generation of women can confidently hold their own later in life is at the heart of everything they do. Role models play an important part because they are a fantastic way for students to see how leaders move through the world. At Wakefield Girls’, they expose their students to a variety of diverse, inspiring female leaders and consistently see how this benefits their students. Role models can also be found close to home and having some great relatable role models can be an excellent way to

help your girl grow courageously to face the challenges that await.

Plenty of opportunities to develop and practise leadership skills is also key. Helping your girl(s) practise in everyday situations is something we can all do – for example, organising a family activity. At school, Wakefield Girls’ o er over 30 di erent types of leadership roles for students and specific enrichment activities every Thursday afternoon, to ensure there are lots of opportunities to practise, grow and develop.

With the importance of creating empowering opportunities for girls in mind, Wakefield Girls’ will host a free day event, #empowHER, on 23 June. The event is open to all girls aged 9-10 years, helping each to develop the skills that will empower them in the future through a series of carefully created workshops and by sharing the mindset of successful female leaders. Speakers include Lizz Wainwright, Head of Marketing Operations

Prime Video at Amazon; Sophie Browning, Business Apprentice at Nestle; Dr Kanika Kapur, Medical Advisor at Sanofi; Faith Ridler, Live Reporter at Sky News; Becky Baker CEO and Founder of K9 Nation; and Rebecca Ward, Sustainability Analyst at Radley Yeldar.

A Year 11 Art and Design student at She eld Girls’ GDST has scooped top prize in a Jimmy Choo fashion design challenge

She eld Girls’ GDST are delighted to announce that one of their budding fashion stars of the future has been awarded the top prize in a fashion challenge set by the Jimmy Choo London Fashion Academy. Ellen Hockam in Year 11 wowed the judges with her take on sustainable garment design and has won masterclass funding, a year’s subscription to Vogue and other goodies in recognition of her e orts.

The competition asked pupils across the UK to create a sustainable garment or accessory, responding to the climate crisis and the impact

the fashion industry has on the environment. Ellen started her project by researching di erent sustainable textiles and was inspired by ‘SeaCell’ and tencel fabrics produced from mixes of seaweed, algae, wood pulp and cellulose. Passionate about promoting the virtues of ‘slow fashion’ – the concept of choosing fewer but better quality clothes and wearing them for many years – over ‘fast fashion’, Ellen found her work on the competition enlightening and as she has continued to develop her skills making and crocheting her own clothes she feels she has a greater appreciation of the labour and talent involved in the fashion world.

Talking about the influence her art

teachers at She eld Girls’ have had on her, Ellen says: “They always o er resources and opportunities such as this competition and they’re always there for you when you need a helping hand or someone to bounce ideas o . It really boosts the creative process and your personal growth as an artist.”

On winning the competition Ellen exclaims: “I was beyond shocked. I was lost for words. When I submitted my entry, I thought to myself that there’s no way that I’d win – especially with the extremely high standards of entries I saw. But if anything, I guess this experience goes to show that anything is possible.”

Karen Andrews, Head of Art at She eld Girls’, adds: “Ellen is an incredibly talented and committed art student who really does live and breathe all things artistic. As well as being an amazing draughtswoman and painter, she has now proven her talents in the field of fashion design with her winning submission. I am sure that Ellen will continue to take every opportunity that comes her way and the masterclasses at the Jimmy Choo Academy are only the beginning of an amazing artistic journey. We are incredibly proud of her!”

Continuing through the ground floor there is a guest WC in the central hallway, the two ground floor bedrooms sit in the original part of the house with the potential to share a Jack and Jill bathroom, and both are of similar proportions with striking beamed ceilings.

On the first floor, the principal bedroom suite enjoys fantastic views towards Castle Howard from a well placed Juliette balcony. There is a well appointed en-suite bathroom, walk in wardrobe and gallery space.

The house sits in some two acres of gardens and grounds alongside the paddock. A gravelled drive (laid in November 2022)

passes the one bedroom cottage/annexe and terminates beside the steel-framed agricultural barn, providing ample options for parking. The barn has double upand-over doors and is currently used for garaging and storage. There is a vehicle recharging point at the back of the annexe as well as a dog kennel and log store.

Landscaped gardens planted with a rich variety of shrubs and perennials surround the house, which is clad with honeysuckle and wisteria on its southern elevation. Alongside the sweeping lawns are paved terraces, scattered trees and shrubs. There are well stocked herbaceous borders, a herb garden enclosed by box hedging, a scented rose garden, raised beds forming a vegetable patch, an orchard with a range of productive fruit trees and a small copse underplanted with bulbs.

The property is on the market for £1,200,000 with Savills York – see savills.co.uk for more information

YORK Fashion Week

Between 27 April-1 May, York Fashion Week will return to the city with a bang - and here’s why

Across five days, York will play host to a number of theatrical runway shows, intimate in-store events and dynamic installations all carefully curated for the fashion loving audience.

York Fashion Week has quickly become a recognised platform for grassroots designers and advocates of the indie brands that are revolutionising the fashion scene, with a fantastic range of independent stores, boutiques and online retailers taking part. And, as one of the few fashion celebrations that takes place in the north of England, the event supports and works alongside local places of education including All Saints School, York St. John and Leeds Art University, meaning students now have an accessible platform to showcase their creativity. But, there’s plenty of space for the high street too. As a true celebration of fashion, if you browse the YFW calendar you’ll spot key high street names including Fenwick and Jigsaw.

In 2022, York Fashion Week saw events including The Sustainable Style Swap, and Independent Runway, Student & Graduate Fashion, and Revival Runway shows. It also created a platform for a variety of di erent brands to unveil their collections, such as a luxury vintage French fashion firm and even a new start-up specialising in adaptable clothing for those living through treatment or illness. You may have even spotted the event on BBC3 as television personality, Charlotte Crosby, chose York Fashion Week to debut her collection Pepper Girls Club in spring 2022.

The stunning Guildhall in York city centre, with its impressive stone walls and solid wood pillars, will once again act as a dazzling backdrop to a series of runway shows that

promise creativity, theatre and innovation, with art direction by Nicky Hayer. Sit back and enjoy shows that will leave you feeling truly inspired, with runways full of innovative design and a beautifully diverse range of models.

Following on from the success of the October 2022 event, which heavily catered to the student and graduate audience, the 2023 event will also welcome Fashion Avenue to the calendar; a day of complimentary lectures and talks for students to attend. Hosted by York content creator and lecturer, Kat Atkinson, the day is dedicated to the di erent avenues that someone can work in the world of fashion and will include highly acclaimed hair and makeup artist Sonia Schofield and the MD of Master Debonair, Simon Whitaker.
