BE IN 2026... The Victorian State Government led by Premier Daniel Andrews has announced that the 2026 Commonwealth Games to be held in Victoria has been cancelled. Initially estimated to cost $2.6B, the project cost has escalated to at least $6B-$7B with the Premier stating that he is unwilling to allocate such an exorbitant amount of money for a 12-day sporting event. The Premier subsequently announced that funding would be redirected towards housing and sporting infrastructure across the state. Funds for 2026 Commonwealth Games to be redirected

THE Victorian State Government, led by Premier Daniel Andrews, has announced the Commonwealth Games which were scheduled to be held in Victoria, in 2026, will be cancelled.

Initially estimated to cost $2.6B, the projected cost had escalated to at least $6B- $7B. Premier Andrews expressed his unwillingness to allocate such a substantial amount of money to a 12-day sporting event.

He has announced plans to instead redirect the funds towards housing and sporting infrastructure in the state. The cancellation

decision was made after discussions with the Games authorities in London, during which the cost issues were conveyed.

Although cancelled, Premier Andrews assured that the promised sporting facilities would still be built for regional communities.

The Victorian government intended for the Federal Government to contribute half of the costs, with the majority allocated to infrastructure.

However, Premier Andrews stated that he would not compromise essential services, such as healthcare, by diverting funds to the Games.

“I've made a lot of difficult decisions in this job - this is not one of them,” and he went on to describe the Commonwealth Games as “all cost, no benefit.”

“We are not going to spend $6B to $7B hosting a 12-day sporting event."

Regional industry and businesses were invited by Greater Shepparton City Council and the Industry Capability Network (ICN) Victoria to attend an information session focused on the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games scheduled for July 26 at the Woolshed in Kialla which at this stage may or may not go ahead.

Local drag race superstar set to slay Australian TV

SERVING charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent, Ashley Madison is ready to wow audiences as a contestant on Rupaul’s Drag Race Down Under season 3. The 25-year-old queen has been slaying the drag scene in Melbourne for years now, but Miss Madison’s origins began in Greater Shepparton.

Growing up in Mooroopna, Ashley attended Mooroopna Highschool, where she co-wrote and co-directed a school play with her drama teacher. After a love at first site experience watching Rupaul's Drag Race, Ashely decided to incorporate a drag queen character in the play, kickstarting her sickening drag journey. The rest is herstory.

“I had a very supportive community, especially coming out halfway through my high school years. The schooling that I had was incredibly encouraging which made my life a lot easier,” said Ashely.

Since moving to Melbourne at the age of 18, Ashely has performed various gigs, as well as founding a drag queen booking agency. Now, she’s competing against 10 other queens to be crowned the next winner of Drag Race Down Under.

“Being on Drag Race is the amalgamation of everything I've wanted to do in my career. It’s brought together all the sacrifices I've made, all the energy I've put out into the world, and all the money I've spent getting to where I am, so competing in the olympics of drag is the epitome of my professional calling,” said Ashely.

As any queen would say, meeting the show's host Rupaul is one of the highlights of competing on Drag Race, with their genuine first meet with mama Ru depicted on the show.

“Meeting Ru was absolutely beyond. It was very much that feeling of being starstruck. When Ru walks through the werk room door and says “g’day g’day g’day,” that’s the first moment that we see her.”

Ashley says it means the world to be part of Drag Race Down Under, as her and the other queens have put their heart and soul into the show.

“We’ve put in so much time and energy, it’s an emotional rollercoaster and there are a lot of Drag Race herstory firsts. The amazing

thing that I can’t wait for people to see is the dynamic between all of us. We really are a group of professional drag queens that love the art of drag,” said Ashely.

Tune in to the first episode of Rupaul’s Drag Race Down Under season 3 on Friday, July 28 on Stan.

Secondary Education

Helping teachers do what they do best

Lale, Heidi, Ahmad and Katie (pictured from left) are among a team of new Education Support (ES) staff to start at Greater Shepparton Secondary College this term. They join a small army of ES staff who keep the college running smoothly. The first face you see on entering the college will likely be an ES staff receptionist while behind the scenes, ES staff do everything from administration to grounds maintenance to information technology roles.

While all ES staff support the college and its core commitment to teaching and learning, our latest recruits have been hired specifically to assist

the College’s teachers in student engagement.

“We’re here because we want to make a difference in the lives of young people and support our teachers as best we can,” Katie says.

If you want to support the great work going on in our GSSC classrooms – and you’re looking for a rewarding career with family friendly hours – drop us a line. Qualifications are welcome but not a must, as training will be provided.

$20M refurbishment at La Trobe Shepparton underway

ADVANCING its commitment to broadening opportunities for the region’s university students, La Trobe University Shepparton has officially began its $20M refurbishment with a sod turning ceremony on Wednesday, July 12.

The refurbishment and campus extension will directly address the critical shortage of teaching and nursing professionals across the municipality and beyond.

With Senator for Victoria Jana Stewart, Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keefe, ViceChancellor La Trobe Professor John Dewar AO and Greater Shepparton City Council mayor, Cr Shane Sali all on hand to collectively loosen the first ceremonial patch, the works will take approximately 18 months to complete.

Funding for the significant campus redevelopment includes $15M contributed by La Trobe University’s major regional investment plan and $5M from the Commonwealth Government.

The funding will double the current clinical learning area for nursing students, expand the library, provide modern learning spaces and extend the Ngarrapna space where Indigenous students can study and access specialised

support.

In addition, the refurbishment will boost enrolments, foster greater collaboration with external partners and provide space for community events.

Having grown up in Swan Hill and a La Trobe alumni, senator for Victoria Jana Stewart said, “It is deeply important to me that rural communities have access to the same highquality facilities and education as young people growing up in metro areas.”

Keen to maintain the campus’ unique regional spirit amongst the redevelopment, La Trobe Shepparton’s head of campus Elizabeth Capp said,

“It’s a fantastic investment in our region for our university and it will mean much improved facilities for our students. We are doubling the size of our nursing lab which is exciting so we can take more nurses in and graduate more nurses into our region, and we’ll have lovely informal and formal study spaces for students so they can undertake hybrid learning. I think it’s also important that we acknowledge the heritage of the region as part of the campus. It is La Trobe but it’s also La Trobe Shepparton.”

Dying to Know Day 2023

BROUGHT to you by FamilyCare and GV Hospice, ‘Dying to Know Day’ is an annual campaign that aims to promote awareness and encourage people to have open conversations about death, dying, and end-of-life planning. By partnering with various speakers and stall holders, the event provides valuable information and resources to the community.

Services Australia, Owens Funerals, and GV Hospice are among the speakers who will address important topics related

to death and dying, while Services Australia will provide information about government services and support available to individuals and families during end-oflife situations.

Stall holders will be present to answer questions and provide further explanations about their specific areas of expertise, offering attendees the opportunity to gather knowledge and resources to make informed decisions.

The ultimate goal of the event is to

Cambodia project: a huge success

IF anything is worth doing, do it with all your heart. That’s exactly what a group of local people did as part of the Cambodian Clean Water and Toilet Project for 2023.

Last month b.YOGA held a pre–International Yoga Day fundraiser to raise money for the project, and after it’s smashing success, a group of 10 individuals headed over to the small village of Kok Beng, just outside of Siem Reap, to install toilets and fresh-water pumps.

With a jam-packed itinerary, b.YOGA founder Heidi Van Maanenberg and her crew headed over to Cambodia for ten days from June 23 to July 3. From digging in the village to visiting schools for a yoga class with a monk, the adventure kept Heidi’s crew well occupied.

“It was very busy. You try to cram in as much as you can. There are so many things to do and see and help and distribute while we’re there. Its full on, but it's amazing. We wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Heidi

With a mix of members new and old, Heidi commented on

‘Dying to Know Day’ 2023 will take place on Tuesday 8 August, from 11am3pm at GV Hospice, 102 Balaclava Road, Shepparton.

how eye opening the experience was, particularly for the few undertaking the trip for the first time.

“You understand the word poverty but until you see true poverty, you don’t know. It's a different way of living.”

This trip has been undertaken by b.YOGA founder Heidi Van Maanenberg and her family every year (except during COVID) for the past eight years, forming a tight-knit community and family with the locals and project teams. In total, b.YOGA has raised $72K for the project, with $7K raised for the 2023 trip.

“It’s a love project, David and I do it because we love it. By the end we were exhausted, but we’re ready to start again because that’s what we do,” said Heidi.

Heidi and Dave are already planning next year's trip, keep an eye on b.YOGA’s Facebook page for details on future fundraising events. 100% of all proceeds raised go towards the project and families in Cambodia. https://www.facebook.com/b.

Embark on a new, rewarding career

The world is changing

PROGRESS is impossible without change, but when it is afoot it breathes in nothing but opportunity and future possibility.

With 11 of the top 20 skill shortages across the nation being in the trades, incentivised employers are attracting more female apprentices to the industry than ever before, recognising as they do so the additional skill set and qualities that young women bring to the job.

Proudly supporting Women in Trades Day by organising an immersive trades program for 15 Greater Shepparton Secondary College (GSSC) students, Goulburn Murray Local Learning Employment Network (GMLLEN) kicked off a series of handson immersive visits to local trade businesses on Friday, July 14.

Getting on plasterer stilts and having a go at building switchboards, the 15 GSSC students toured Total Plaster Supplies and Watters Electrical as part of the program where they enjoyed rotating activities at each as a mere ‘taster’ to a possible life and career working in a trade.

To conclude the program the girls will head to GOTAFE on Friday, July 21 to meet with industry experienced, female trainers to round out their experience.

“This is the first girl orientated

try a trade program that we’ve done, specifically targeting year nine girls,” said GMLLEN executive officer, Bec Costa-Lowe watching a group of students enjoy the challenge of walking on plasterers' stilts at Total Plaster Supplies.

“We are working with the girls to grow a greater understanding and awareness of where the opportunities in trades are before they step into their year ten work experience subject selection.

“Having women in a trades program such as this gives the girls the freedom to feel comfortable trying out new skills and

hopefully this will transition into apprenticeships later on down the track.”

Considering construction and engineering as future career path, 14-year-old Vera Asante said of the taster, “I’m so glad and happy for schools to be doing things like women in trades because it’s really enjoyable.

“In the future, I think there is going to be a lot more girls in trades, engineering and STEM. And I think there’s probably going to be a lot more boys entering into traditional female dominated roles as well. The world is definitely changing.”

Just plein artistic

PICTURESQUE landscapes painted in the present, that’s what plein air painting is all about. From the French phrase meaning “in the open air”, plein air painters' step outside with their canvases and use the great outdoors as their studio.

Plein air painting involves stepping away from the confinements of the indoors and immersing oneself in the natural environment to create art. This artistic tradition has a long history, established as a refined art form by the French Impressionists. Driven by a deep fascination with capturing the elusive nature of light and its ever-changing qualities, painters gained the liberty to express themselves "en plein air”.

Painting outdoors poses challenges due to the ever-shifting atmospheric conditions and fugitive light, but that hasn’t stopped a few local artists from tackling this formidable art-form.

The Goulburn Valley Plein Air Artists are a local group

specialising in plein air painting. Meeting every Monday morning, the group come together in the great outdoors to paint landscapes within the landscapes.

Starting six months ago, the group sprouted from a love of art and nature, and soon became a cheerful social gathering of people who loved to get out there and paint while sharing the experience with like-minded individuals.

“The difference between our group and most other groups is we want to get out there and paint, and that’s the emphasis, getting out there on Monday and painting things on location. Not copying them or doing them in a studio- its getting out there,” said GV Plein Air Artist Raymond Hill.

Speaking to the best part about their group, Raymond expressed that it’s the close friendships that are formed through their morning painting sessions... and Tank’s pumpkin soup!

The group consists of both experienced and novice painters

Riverbank restoration underway

THE Greater Shepparton City Council is undertaking major repair works to a section of riverbank along the Goulburn River, near the Aquamoves car park. The repairs are necessary due to significant damage and erosion caused by the October 2022 floods. The primary aim of the project is to secure the riverbank and ensure the safety of road and car park users.

Gary Randhawa, the Director of Infrastructure at the Council, emphasised the proactive approach being taken to safeguard the infrastructure while respecting the natural surroundings. The Engineering Services team is finalising the design for the Tom Collins Drive Bank Stabilisation, which includes two sections of rip rap rock bank stabilisations and the renewal of an existing rip rap section next to the drainage pump station.

To facilitate the project, the Council has employed the use of drone technology for the

first time in one of its infrastructure projects. The drone surveys the riverbank, providing cost savings and eliminating safety risks associated with manual surveying in challenging environments.

The project is expected to be completed during the 2023/2024 financial year and is financially supported by the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority and the Victorian Government's Flood Support Fund.

In the meantime, interim safety measures have been implemented to protect footpath and car park users. Fencing and bollards have been installed, closing off five Aquamoves parking bays and the loading bay closest to the riverbank. The road has also been temporarily relocated further from the bank to reduce risk for vehicles and pedestrians. Asset inspectors will regularly monitor the site to address any changes in the bank's stability. Select

An embedded culture for success at ACE College

THEY say success is no accident, requiring hard work, diligence, learning and most of all a love of what you are doing. At Shepparton ACE Secondary College students are well versed in the attributes of what it takes to forge ahead with their education in order to prepare for a bright and prosperous future.

In addition to this, staff and students share an exceptional understanding of what it means to work together when it comes to shaping strong career pathways and supports.

Having embedded a strong student code of conduct within the culture of the College since its inception 16 years ago, students today readily uphold and value the school’s high expectations enabling them to thrive.

Michael Skinner is one of many highly achieving Year 12 students at ACE Secondary College and is well on his way to fulfilling his ambition of becoming a qualified plumber. Disengaged and lost

amongst the enormous student body of a metropolitan school, Michael’s subsequent enrolment at ACE two years ago has had a significant impact on the direction of his education.

“I settled in at ACE pretty quick, and it is a much better school because of the smaller class sizes and because the relationship between the teachers and the students are so good. You can talk to the teachers here pretty much about anything.

“ACE has also helped me find and sort out a school-based apprenticeship in plumbing. I study three days a week and I work with Trent Davies at Statewide Plumbing the other two.”

In full agreement that it is the school’s high social and educational expectations that contribute to a safe and vibrant learning environment, Michael said, “All the students and teachers are happy and comfortable here, there is a relationship of respect and trust in the classrooms.”

THE RIGHT INGREDIENTS TO SUCCEED...Year 12 Shepparton ACE Secondary College student, Michael Skinner has found the right school to help him realise his dream of becoming an apprentice plumber. Matter of fact about the high expectations and collaborative teaching and learning approach shared by staff and students at the college, Michael said

Letters to the Editor

CRUMBLING ROADS

Peter Walsh

MP Leader of The Nationals

Dear Editor, REGIONAL drivers are forced to drive on crumbling roads, but life only gets harder as motor costs continue to rise and road maintenance continues to be neglected. Families continue to be slugged, with the cost of car registration and licence fees rising for another year.

Regional Victorians will now have to find almost $850 in the household budget to register the family car.

Victorian road users are paying more for less, with the Government slashing their road maintenance funding by 45 per cent since 2020.

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) will be

raided again, which puts vital road safety initiatives and accident responses at risk to balance the government’s budget.

With car fees increasing despite our roads deteriorating, the cost of living only gets tougher for hardworking Victorians.

Labor is unwilling to fix our roads but continues to hammer Victorian road users with price increases.

Bad roads are dangerous roads, which sadly the Government refuses to address, with more than 150 tragic deaths in 2023 - 30 per cent more than this time last year. These are not just statistics, they are somebody’s mother, father or sibling.

While a family member is missing from the dinner table, Labor continues to neglect our roads.

Managing director of road surfacing company VSA Roads, Justin Bartlett, said they have witnessed a massive deterioration of Victorian roads since 2022.

“Our rural main road and highway network has quickly become one that resembles a patchwork quilt with shortterm quick fixes becoming the norm … the decision to cut off all funding defies any logic,’’ Justin said.

While Labor refuses to properly maintain our roads, Daniel Andrews and Jacinta Allan are happy to send Victorian road users higher bills to use dodgy roads riddled with potholes.

The redevelopment will include high-tech clinical space, expanded library, modern study areas and flexible space for community events. At La Trobe I met Aakrati, who is studying Education. It is exciting to see the University’s expansion including more course offerings.

Fight Cancer Foundation

I recently met with Cara Davey from the Fight Cancer Foundation, which provides low-cost accommodation for cancer patients and carers near GV Health.

Stage 2 of the GV Health redevelopment includes an integrated cancer centre. Cara and the Foundation aspire to increase their accommodation and support at their current site. This opportunity will be lost without a commitment and finalisation of the next stage of GV Health’s redevelopment. New office update

We will be relocating to my new office at 318 Wyndham Street, Shepparton mid-September.

Out and about

With no Parliament this month, I have been out and about catching up with my constituents across the electorate. New businesses, sporting events, service clubs, community houses and much more. Contact my office if you would like me to speak at or attend your event or to arrange a catch up.

The award was accepted by Franchisee Rod Poliness. The conference took place in June 2023 in Bali, Indonesia and brought together over 300 franchisees, suppliers, and associates from across Australia to celebrate and recognise excellence within the business.

The conference served as a platform to showcase the achievements of the Goodyear Autocare network and discuss future growth strategies. It was a significant event, being the largest in Goodyear Autocare history.

"Ever since the business started back in the 1950s, we have always striven to maintain the highest standard of service and this award reflects that,” Rod said.

"While this is a great achievement, none of it would have been possible without the ongoing support of our wonderful staff and the community. It's been so rewarding growing the

business into what it is today.”

The judging criteria for the award included Sales Performance, Store Presentation and Customer Service among others. Rod was presented the award at the conference’s Gala Dinner. Other State and National winners and inductees into the Goodyear Hall of Fame were also announced during the event.

“We are so fortunate to have such a large and unified group of franchisees who are passionate about their work and are committed to the Goodyear Autocare brand,” said David Stafford, Franchising & Licensing Director for Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres.

“These awards are our opportunity to recognise this commitment and excellence across the Goodyear Autocare store network. Goodyear Autocare Shepparton epitomises our desire to be the local community’s Tyre & Auto Experts. I extend my congratulations to the team, thank them for their loyalty over the years and for setting the benchmark for our network,” David Stafford said.

GIVEN the ever-changing landscape of taxes, it’s always best to get your return prepared by a professional.

Tax Guru Chartered Accountants are experts in tax law and have provided us with a list of changes and focuses the ATO have in the forefront for last financial year.

Focus on rental property owners to continue

ATO started focusing on rental property tax deductions after a report in 2022 found that 9 out of 10 tax returns having rental properties had at least one mistake even if prepared by registered agents. As such ATO will continue to check tax returns having exorbitant expenses, especially repairs that are incorrectly claimed instead as renovation which is not fully claimable in one year.

Removing $250 reduction for self-education expenses

Earlier, eligible expenses for self-education used to be reduced by $250. The reduction has been done away meaning it will benefit students.

Working from home

Under revised fixed rate method, taxpayers can now claim 67C per hour to do work from home. On top of this, taxpayer can also claim tax deduction for depreciating assets such as office furniture.

Crypto and other financial transactions

Over the past few years, many taxpayers have invested in Crypto currencies and also other types of financial asset transactions like CFD. Often, people forget to keep proper record and advise their accountant. It is

taxpayers' duty to declare these transactions.

Small business training boost deduction

Filipino skewered pork barbeque

A beloved and iconic dish in Filipino cuisine

HAILING from Manila, Philippines, Marieta Martin has lived and worked locally for over two decades and although she has been passionately engaged in the community through both her work and her involvement in the Filipino Australian & Friends Association, it is the memories associated with the aromas of Filipino street food that evoke the joyful reminiscence of childhood.

Filipino skewered pork barbeque is one such childhood favourite and is a delicious recipe of cultural significance that Marieta hopes very much will be enjoyed by you, with the recommendation that it is best served with boiled rice.

Ingredients and marinade mixture

1 kg pork shoulder/ butt/belly

1/3 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup soy sauce

1/4 cup calamansi (cumquat) or lemon

2 tbsp banana ketchup or any ketchup

Basting Mixture

1/2 cup used marinade

1/2 cup banana ketchup

1/3 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup soy sauce

Dipping sauce

1/4 cup soy sauce

2 tbsp brown or white vinegar

1/2 cup sprite

2 tbsp water

2 tbsp calamansi juice or 1 tbsp lemon juice

1-2 tsp sugar (adjust to desired sweetness)

Method:

1. Slice the pork into barbecue-sized pieces.

2. In a bowl, combine the marinade ingredients and mix thoroughly to dissolve the sugar.

3. Add the marinade to the sliced pork and mix well. Marinate for at least 4 hours, or overnight for better flavour.

4. Skewer the marinated pork, starting with the fat and using a twisting motion.

A TREASURED FILIPINO RECIPE... Bringing back the delicious smells of Filipino street food, Marieta Martin’s shared recipe for skewered pork barbeque is a delight that simply must be cooked and tried in the home. Photo: Supplied

2 tbsp garlic

1 tsp black pepper

1 cup sprite

1 pack bamboo skewers

1/4 cup cooking oil

1/4 cup calamansi (cumquat) or lemon

2-3 bird’s eye chiles

1 medium tomato diced

1 medium red onion diced

1/4 tsp Iodized salt

1/4 tsp ground black pepper

5. Set aside 1/2 cup of the marinade and add the basting mixture ingredients to it.

6. Preheat the grill and brush it with cooking oil to prevent sticking.

7. Grill the skewered meat, basting it with the prepared basting sauce after every turn to keep it moist and juicy.

Latest water releases

GOULBURN-MURRAY Water (GMW) has begun releasing water from Lake Eppalock to manage the rate of fill at the storage.

Releases from Lake Eppalock increased to 800 ML/day on Monday July 10. GMW Water Storage Services general manager Martina Cusack said releases were based on projected inflows.

“Goulburn-Murray Water manages the lake, it doesn’t own the water,” she said.

“Coliban Water, environmental water holders, and farmers are the main entitlement owners. To release more water from Lake Eppalock, GMW would generally require the water holders to order more water.

“However, GMW can release water from Lake Eppalock when the storage is expected to fill and forecast inflows will replenish the water released. This ensures that water holders are not losing the water being stored in Lake Eppalock for them.”

Water levels at Lake Eppalock are currently reaching the spillway level - however, even if the storage spills, the design of the spillway means inflows are temporarily kept back in the storage, and outflows are less than inflows. Ms Cusack said GMW would continue monitoring conditions to determine if releases needed to be increased.

GMW are also continuing to make releases from Lake Eildon to create room for further inflows into the storage, which is 97.88 per cent full (as of 17/07/2023). GMW is currently releasing 12,000 ML per day from Lake Eildon, with these releases to be adjusted depending on further rainfall.

The Eildon dam is in the upper catchment of the Goulburn River and collects water from 23 percent of the Goulburn catchment. The remaining 77 percent of the catchment include significant creeks and rivers like the Rubicon River, Acheron River, Yea River, Sunday Creek, Seven Creeks and the Broken River.

Council’s candidate info session tomorrow

GREATER Shepparton City Council’s Candidate Information Session is being this week, and residents are encouraged to attend to get an insight into what being a Councillor looks like.

The Candidate Information Session will be held at the North Shepparton Community and Learning Centre, 10/14 Parkside Drive, Shepparton on Thursday 20 July from 12pm to 1pm.

The session will give attendees great insight into what being a Councillor might look like, including time commitments, responsibilities and general requirements under the Local Government Act 2020, as we approach the 2024 Council elections. Attendees can expect to leave the session with a greater understanding of the role of a Councillor and hopefully an increased desire to consider running next year.

Local Government is a proud leader in gender equality. At the 2020 local government elections, Victoria set a new national record for female representation with women making up 43.8 percent of elected councillors, helping advance towards the goal of gender equality by 2025.

“Council is an inclusive and safe space, and Greater Shepparton Councillors represent the bold, multicultural community which our region is known for. Everyone is welcome to attend the Information Session, with women from the Greater Shepparton community encouraged to come along,” CEO, Peter Harriott said.

“Attendees will also hear from Bendigo City Council Mayor, Cr Andrea Metcalf, who will be sharing her journey to Council

and her personal experience in the role as a Councillor.”

Residents interested in attending the Candidate Information Session are encouraged to RSVP before Friday 14 July via this link shepp.city/candidateinfo. Event details below.

A business to love, nurture and grow

DELIGHTING, exciting and bringing smiles to the faces of children for eight, fun-filled years, Dotz for Kidz in Fryers Street Shepparton is up for sale, ready to be loved, nurtured and grown by a new ownership.

More than just a toy shop, Dotz for Kidz has earned a beloved reputation for quality when it comes to toys and educational resources.

Offering a wide range of books, games, specialised arts and crafts, scooters, trikes, lunch boxes, wooden toys and sensory products, the store is full to the brim with magical and wonderful items at every turn, enticing doting parents and grandparents alike with gift ideas aplenty.

Understanding the need for educational products, Dotz for Kidz also provides suitable sensory and educational resources for NDIS participants as well as products for teachers, therapists

and psychologists who work with additional needs in children. A business that has been a labour of love for co-owners Judy and Katrina from the start, the passionate mother/daughter team believe the store presents as a remarkable opportunity for new owners to continue their unique vision, with the potential to grow and expand the business still further.

“Staying true to our ideal from the start in bringing quality toys and educational resources to town in one location, Mum and I have enjoyed every minute of Dotz.

“It has meant a lot to us to be able to help our NDIS families and they’ve been very appreciative of what we can offer here locally and on the other side we have seen the joy of parents and grandparents as they purchase gifts. It’s really been a pleasure to be here every single day,” Katrina said.

BEAUTIFUL GIFTS AND CANDLES... Spirited Flame in Kyabram is a store with a difference. Owner Eve has a plethora of certifications under her belt in cosmetic manufacturing and candle making and a keen eye for unique giftware of exceptional quality. Photo: Supplied

IN the main street of Kyabram stands a store filled with carefully curated, handmade and locally sourced gifts and homewares.

Brack’s Bridge Update

Funds from the Victorian Government’s Flood Recovery Program went to stabilising the riverbank near Brack’s Bridge on the Delatite River, near Mansfield. More than 450 tonnes of rock and 80 cubic metres of clay were brought in to repair a significantly eroded section of riverbank within the grounds of the popular Brack’s Bridge Public Reserve.

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate action, which manages the site, identified the eroded bank as a risk to the bridge and sought help from the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority (GBCMA) following last October’s recordbreaking rain event.

The GBCMA’s Corey Wilson said the CMA

Read

had carried out work to reinforce the bank and repair damage caused by the high flows along a 40m section of waterway.

“The project was completed successfully but we had a few delays as a result of the current weather conditions – credit to the local contractor for undertaking these works and getting the job done in difficult conditions.”

Just over a year ago Eve Gillard opened ‘Spirited Flame’, a store with a difference. Eve has a plethora of certifications under her belt in cosmetic manufacturing and candle making and a keen eye for unique giftware of exceptional quality.

There’s no need to travel to Echuca or Shepparton for the perfect present, Eve has an extensive range and if she doesn’t stock an item, she’s happy to endeavour to get it in-store. Items such as their house made candles and body care products in addition to items sourced from local suppliers

means shopping at ‘Spirited Flame’ not only supports Eve, but other small business owners.

Located at 149 Allan St Kyabram, Eve can be contacted on 5852 1008. Follow them on Facebook facebook.com/ spiritedflame and visit spiritedflame.com to view some of their range.

For your chance to win a share of $25,500, spend a minimum of $10 at participating retailers, scan the QR code, upload your receipt and submit online. Spirited Flame is a participating business in the 2023 GMCU $25,500 Giveaway.

BENALLA V MANSFIELD

Mansfield will be looking to take another important step towards securing its place in the September action when it makes the short trip to the Benalla Showgrounds. The Eagles were able to return to the winners’ list following a workmanlike win over Tatura. Coach Chad Owens would have been pleased to bank the win and to hear his Eagles have skipped three games clear in sixth place after the Bears loss. But he will know the job is not done yet. The Saints were competitive against the Lions last weekend. They matched the Lions in the first quarter and won the last quarter by a point.

Christopher Welsh, Samuel Harris, Fintan Brazil, Wade King and Will O’Donoghue will be looking to continue their good form to take the contest right up to the Eagles. Tom McDonagh, Dirk Koenen, Frazer Dale, Sam Lynch, Ben Christopher and Cam Arnold will be important for the visitors to ensure they walk away from the showgrounds with the four points.

Tip: Mansfield.

SHEPPARTON V KYABRAM

Shepparton faces a massive challenge when it welcomes Kyabram to Deakin Reserve. The Bears suffered somewhat of an upset defeat at Moon Oval last weekend while the Bombers suffered their first loss since round two last round when beaten by the reigning premier Echuca. That said, the Bombers won’t panic. Prior to that defeat, the Bombers had won 10 on the trot, claiming some big scalps along the way. They will come to the home football confident that if they play their best football that they can be in front at 4.30pm when the siren sounds.

Tyron Baden, Jonty Wardle, Xavier Stevenson, Jacob Watts and Anthony Andronaco will be the players leading the way for the Bears who will look try and make it difficult for the Bombers.

Liam Ogden, Kyle Mueller, Will Golds, Zachary Norris, Toby Wooller and Kane Herbert will be the Bombers looking to fire to ensure they get the win to keep pace with the top two teams. Tip: Kyabram.

EUROA V SEYMOUR

This promises to be a cracking game of football between two genuine premiership contenders. The Magpies shouldn’t be lost in this conversation. They are flying under the radar and probably appreciate that the focus is on the three teams above it. I truly believe that they in this season’s premiership race right up to their neck.

When these two teams clashed last time, I was very impressive by Seymour. The Lions ran the Pies off their feet on a warm Autumn afternoon. Coach Scott Rowan will be aware of that and there is no doubt he would be hoping his chargers have learnt some valuable lessons from that day. Ruckman Andrew Smith had a really good game when they last clashed and his form has been really good this year. Morrison Medal favourite, Will Hayes has been absolutely brilliant this season. He continues to rack up the possessions. Max Gleeson, Adam Giobbi and Jett Trotter are others who come into this game in really strong form. Seymour is definitely one of the best teams in the competition. They have only lost once – by a point at Kyabram and they lost no friends that day. And, they are easily one of the best coached teams under Ben Davey. Michael Hartley has had a really good season down back this year for the Lions. Last weekend, Davey moved him forward with

immediate impact. His nine-goal haul proved to be the difference for the Lions. The last time these teams played, Hartley played in defence and a little bit in the ruck, so it will be interesting to see where he lines up. Riley Mason, Rory Scopel, Ben Cooney and Jack O’Sullivan have been others to be playing well for the Lions and they will be important if the visitors are to walk away with the win. Tip: Seymour.

MOOROOPNA V SHEPPARTON UNITED

Mooroopna will be chasing a third successive win over the Shepparton-based teams when it hosts Shepparton United. The Cats have overcome the Bears and Swans in the past fortnight and coach John Lamont would have been reasonably pleased with what his group has done, but he will still be demanding for more as they charge towards the finals. After a sluggish first half, the Cats then put the foot down to kick 11.9 in the second half to record a comfortable win over the Swans. Daniel Johnston, Coby James, Ben Hicks, Dom Gugliotti, Bryce Rutherford and Chris Nield (40 goals in 2023) will be important to ensure the Cats don’t drop the ball against the Demons. Liam Serra, Declan Newbound, Fergus Pinnuck, Jayden Magro, Sheldon Bogdan and Lewis Stanton will be the Demons doing their best to ensure the visitors give the home team a run for their money. Tip: Mooroopna

SHEPPARTON SWANS V ECHUCA

Shepparton Swans will be looking to test its improvement against the reigning premier. The Swans have been very competitive in 2023, with the exception of maybe a couple of games, including the earlier meeting against Echuca at Victoria Park. Against the Cats last round, they were right in the game at half-time, but then couldn’t go with them in the second half. Coach Jedd Wright will look to Zac Banch, Tom Preece, Joeve Cooper, Nathan Hrovat and Isaiah Jones to lead the way to take the game up to the visitors. Jack Evans, Jack McHale, Samuel Reid, Jackson Stewart and Andrew Walker were outstanding in helping their team make a statement last round. After a tight opening half, the Murray Bombers were able to make a second half statement by kicking nine goals to three to run out 37-point winners over premiership aspirant Kyabram. If they can continue that form, then I expect the visitors to be too strong for the Swans. Tip: Echuca

This will be an interesting game for both teams. They sit at three wins apiece. The Tigers’ have been really competitive in the past month, including two wins against the Swans and Shepparton. Tatura hasn’t won since June 3, so they will be desperate to try and finish with a couple of wins to end the season to take some momentum into 2024. Harley McCarthy, Comanche Walls, Jacob Chessells, Mitchell Elliott and Sean McAllister will be the Bulldogs that will need to continue their strong form to allow them to reverse the earlier season loss to the Tigers. The Tigers will fancy their chances, especially off the back of their recent form. They defeated the Dogs earlier in the season for what was their first victory of 2023. Joseph Atley, Hamish Hooppell, Mitch Cricelli, Matt Kellett and Nathan McCarty will be important if the Tigers are to make it two wins on the bounce and leap ahead of the Dogs on the ladder. Tip: Tatura.

Shepparton taekwondo athlete claims gold thrice at major championships.

SAMMY Rachele, owner of Shepparton's Koryo Taekwondo Centre, had a remarkable performance at the Oceania Open Championships, the World Taekwondo President's Cup, and the Australian Open. The events took place in Queensland and attracted over 1500 competitors from 45 countries. These tournaments served as G2 events, where athletes aiming for the Olympics could earn world-ranking points.

Rachele showcased his skills and determination by winning gold medals in all three major events within his Poomsae (patterns) age category. Competing against some of the world's finest taekwondo athletes, Rachele implemented a rigorous training process to get him prepared for success.

“I’ve been doing Wim Hof breathing and ice baths every morning for the last two years. That’s the first thing that I do.

Get up, do my breathing, jump in the icecold pool, sauna, then train. I trained three hours a day for three months leading up to this competition. It was pretty tough, but I love it. It's what I love to do,” said Sammy.

In terms of what comes next, Rachele has big plans for his future taekwondo career, and hopes to continue his passion for the sport well into his senior years.

“We're going to hopefully try and get into selections for World Championships next year in Hong Kong. If I can keep training and keep going the way that I'm going, hopefully I'll get in the team,” said Sammy.

“My grandmaster is turning 85 and he's still going strong, and if I can get anywhere close to that, that’s the goal. The longevity. That’s what we’re alive for isn't it, to live a good, happy, strong, healthy life.”

Congratulations to Sammy and his outstanding achievement, showing that hard work, talent, dedication, and determination can achieve anything.
