No en vano tiene detrás una tradición familiar en este deporte. Su abuelo, San tos Amaro, jugó en las ligas de México y Cuba. Y su papá, Rubén Amaro, jugó y fue entrenador en las Grandes Ligas. Su abuela fue receptora del equipo mexicano de béisbol en los Panamericanos de ese país, donde conoció a su abuelo.
Hoy figura en los salones de la Fama de la Asociación de Béisbol Amateur de Esta dos Unidos y del Deporte Judío de Filadelfia.
n AL DÍA realizamos desde hace siete años el evento The Arche types, como parte del National Hispanic Heritage Month. Es una manera de reconocer a mujeres y hombres que han hecho parte de la historia de los Estados Unidos.
El salto lo dio cuando encontró el Ken dall College, una escuela de artes culina rias de Chicago. “Ese fue mi descubrimien to en la escuela de cocina: tenía un talento que o sabía que estaba dentro de mí”, re cordó en entrevista con AL DÍA.

He moved forward when he found Kendall College, a culinary arts school in Chicago. “That was my discovery in cu linary school: I had a talent that I didn’t know was inside me”, he recalled in an interview with AL DÍA.

Garces was born in Chicago, but his parents integrated him into the Ecuador ian culture, telling him history and being faithful to their Latin past. He came and went from Ecuador, where he even did a year of college.
José Garcés has managed to connect his American culture with his Ecuador ian roots through cuisine in a wonderful and recognized way. His parents were very young when they arrived in the country, less than 20 years old.

Amaro Jr. spent eight years in profes sional baseball with a .235 batting aver age: 16 home runs, 100 RBIs and 99 runs. He then spent ten seasons as an assistant general manager for the Phillies, and lat er served as the team’s general manager and senior vice president.
For good reason, he has a family tradi tion in the sport. His grandfather, Santos Amaro, played in the Mexican and Cuban leagues; his father, Rubén Amaro, played and coached in the Major Leagues; his grandmother was a catcher for the Mexican baseball team at the Pan American Games in that country, where she met his grand father. “I never knew if I was going to play baseball. It was just part of my life and my brother’s from an early age”, he said.

The mentorship program works by senior consultants heading to multiple U.S cities around the country, those who have a high of Black and Latino population.Theresources offered include one-on-one coaching led by senior business consultants, access to professional development opportunities, educational lectures and banking and credit workshops.

As an undergraduate student, Garces went through a period of time when he was unsure of his calling.

“That kind of immigrant experience, which is one where there’s a lot of struggle and I think financial hardship that occurs during that time,” he explained.

“I had gained a huge appreciation for that,” Garces said. “So, the combination of the two things was really what formed me and my opinions and who I am today.”
From an early age, Garces was often in the kitchen cooking with his mother — and when she would visit — his grandmother, as well.
I decided that Latin cuisine would be the thing because I had it in my blood, in my roots.
His father comes from a family of Agrarians, who owned a lot of farmland and had access to fresh ingredients and livestock. Due to that, cooking was very prevalent to the Garces family.

He is the child of Ecuadorian immigrants who came to the United States during their early adulthood, in search of a better life.
Ese mismo otoño se matriculó y fue aceptado, y sus instructores no tardaron en descubrir su habilidad y creatividad, que a menudo mostraba en su cocina. En palabras de Garcés, “ese fue mi descubrimiento en la escuela de cocina: tenía un talento que no sabía que estaba dentro de mí”. Esto le abrió todo un nuevo mundo de oportunidades.

Su padre, procedente de una familia de agricultores que poseía muchas tierras de cultivo, tenía acceso a ingredientes frescos y al ganado. Por ello, la cocina era algo muy habitual en la familia Garcés. Sin embargo, aunque había buenos cocineros, nadie había tomado ese camino como una aventura profesional.
A través de esas experiencias, Garcés adquirió amor y aprecio por la cultura latinoamericana, y empezó a profundizar en esa parte de su herencia. Sin embargo, fue la comida con la que pudo conectar con sus raíces.

A CULINARY DISCOVERY
“I just saw the crisp white uniforms, the white hats, I saw the rigidity to it and the kitchen brigade, and I knew that was an environment that suited my personality well,” said Garces, noting whatever path he took, he needed structure and discipline.Thatsame Fall, he enrolled and was accepted. It didn’t take long for his instructors to discover his skill and creativity that he often displayed in his cooking.

“When they got here, it was very much about making ends meet,” Garces said in an interview with AL DÍA. Garces’ father was trying to earn his degree, while his mother worked to take care of him and his older brother.
During his annual trips, his grandmother would often travel by bus to take him and his brother to see different parts of theThroughcountry.those experiences, Garces gained a love and appreciation for Latin American culture, and really started to delve deeper into that part of his heritage.

As a first-generation EcuadorianAmerican born in Chicago, Garces’ natural instinct was to be more Americanized.“Whether it be speaking the language, speaking English in a more regional tone, working on my tone and inflections, really trying to understand American pop culture and history,” he said.Garces also played football and participated in wrestling, two sports that aren’t prevalent in Ecuador.

However, for Garces, it was about assimilating to and immersing himself in American culture, while also not losing sight of his Latino heritage.
When Rodriguez accepted, he person ally selected Garces as his executive chef. Together, the trio opened up Alma de Cuba; and later, Garces helped Starr open El Vez.
After working at a handful of establish ments in the Big Apple, such as The Rainbow Room, The Four Seasons and Bolivar, Garces went to work for Chef Douglas Rodriguez.
“That was my discovery in cooking school,” Garces said. “That I had some talent that I didn’t know was buried with in me.”This opened up a whole new world of opportunities for him.

Garces then arrived in New York City with the intention of working in oneyear increments at different establish ments across the city, gaining as much experience as he could and continuing educating himself through this manner.
“I realized that I had to really special ize in a craft because if I didn’t do that, I was going to just be a journeyman,” he said. “Jack of all trades, master of none.”
“You have to have a passion because otherwise it’s more difficult… it’s physi cal, it’s tiring, you’re often on your feet,” he said.Itis one of the primary qualities he shares to others who want to try their hand at the culinary industry, particu larly those from diverse backgrounds.
A big traveler, Garces has visited several continents and experienced that same reality in each region.
During those years with Stephen and Douglas, I really felt like I had the best of both worlds in terms of mentors.
Globally acclaimed as the “Father of Nuevo Latino Cuisine,” Rodriguez be came one of Garces’ biggest mentors.
Throughout his journey, Garces has learned a lot about the power of food, namely how it is a prominent way of bringing people together.
After Amada, he has since opened Distrito, Tinto, Volvér, Buena Onda and many others, with an eye toward shar ing Latin American culture and cuisine.
After working at the Michelin starred restaurant, La Taberna del Alabardero, for a few years and gaining “a European experience in a Spanish kitchen,” he re turned to the states to take the next step in his“Attraining.thatpoint,
I realized I was just a cook, not quite a chef,” he said.
Since their openings, the restaurants have become staples of Latin American cui sine within Philadelphia’s culinary scene.
Those experiences served as the cata lysts toward Garces taking that next step in his culinary career.
To him, cooking is a mindful activity that can allow people to let go of persist ing issues and clear their minds.
“The end result is a really pleasant experience, something you can be proud of,” he said.
Therefore, he needed to continue to learn how to perfect his craft and im prove his cooking skills.
TAKING A STEP AS A RESTAURATEUR
Being a chef and restaurant owner has really helped Garces fully embrace his own roots, culture and heritage, share them with others, while also learning about the many other cultures that make the United States the nation it is. z
“That gave me the confidence to now go out and open my first place,” he added.
He calls the ability to travel to differ ent places “one of the best joys of this profession.”Traveling to different parts of the world helps him become more knowledgeable and authentic when it comes to bringing those recipes, dishes, and cuisine back to the states and later launching his latest concepts.
In addition, Garces sees cooking as a basic, fundamental skill that everyone should have.
“During those years with Stephen and Douglas, I really felt like I had the best of both worlds in terms of mentors,” saidWithGarces.Rodriguez, whom Garces de scribed as “an amazing food technician,” he was able to learn about how to build flavors. With Starr, Garces learned the entrepreneurial business side of the in dustry, along with costs and profit.

As someone who has been in the food industry now for nearly three decades, Garces has learned some very valuable lessons along the way, and strives to con tinue learning more.

After graduating from Kendall Col lege, Garces decided to travel to Spain to cook and gain a sense of what it was like there. He initially wanted to go to France, as during his time in college, he was clas sically-trained in French cooking.
As a student, cook, chef, and restau rateur, Garces is always looking at the next project or venture.
“For me, it’s never felt like work. It’s always felt like, ‘this is something I’m really excited about,’” Garces added.
However, already armed with knowl edge of the Spanish language and cui sine, he was confident in his ability to achieve a high level of culinary success.
“It’s a journey I’m on to kind of really understand how food can really help fend off disease, help us live longer,” he said. “And I’m excited to apply my cooking knowledge to some of these ingredients and foods to help, hopefully, give people better health going forward.”

In going to Spain, he thought that the experience would make him more well-rounded and help diversify his tech niques by adding European-style cooking and cuisine to his arsenal.

Already established as one of the pre mier chefs in New York City and having opened up two restaurants in the city — Chicama and Pipa — fellow chef Stephen Starr approached Rodriguez about poten tially doing the same in Philadelphia.

Después de trabajar en el restaurante La Taberna del Alabardero, con estrella Michelin, durante unos años y adquirir “una experiencia europea en una cocina española”, regresó a Estados Unidos para dar el siguiente paso en su formación.SegúnGarcés, “En ese momento me di cuenta de que solo era un cocinero, no un chef”. Por ello, necesitaba seguir perfeccionando su oficio y mejorando sus habilidades culinarias.Garces llegó entonces a Nueva York con la intención de trabajar en diferentes establecimientos de la ciudad para adquirir la experiencia que pudiera y continuar su formación.
Luego de trabajar en diversos establecimientos de la Gran Manzana, como The Rainbow Room, The Four Seasons y Bolivar, Garcés lo hizo para el chef Douglas Rodríguez.

Amaro Jr. almost played soccer at a collegiate level. When he played in high school he was close to recruitment, but informed recruiters that baseball was his preferred sport due to his greater inter est as it still is today.

“My father was not just a player, he ended up entering into the front office and working for the Phillies in the front office, as a system farm director, the co ordinator of Latin American scouting for many years,” he continued.
He spent a season with the Phils, before getting traded to the Cleveland Indians and later returning to the Phil lies, playing two separate stints with his hometown team.

Nearly four years later, he debuted in the major leagues for the Angels. Howev er, in the 1991 offseason, Amaro Jr. was traded to the Phillies — his hometown team, and the team his father had the most years and biggest impact with.
Amaro Jr.’s pro baseball career lasted eight years, and he ended his career with a .235 batting average, 16 home runs, 100 RBIs, and 99 runs.
Still uncertain what sport to play, Amaro Jr. graduated from William Penn Charter School in 1983, having played both baseball and soccer.
He called his 17 years as an executive with the Phillies front office or “those years in a suit,” “really special to me.”
“I was very fortunate to be able to have that opportunity,” he said. “And to do it from my hometown, to do it for an organization that I grew up knowing and loving was really a dream come true.”
Amaro Jr. believes that he will not be the last multiculturally diverse person to be inducted into any of the two Halls of Fame.
Amaro Jr. served 10 seasons as the Phillies’ assistant general manager, and was on hand for the Phillies’ World Se ries win in 2008.
Both his father and grandfather were great influences in his decision to play baseball, as both of them did so. Howev er, it wasn’t a given.
“And one of my dreams come true was the fact that I was standing on the lines when they announced the opening day players,” he added.
MAKING A TRANSITION

Almost immediately after retiring from his playing career in 1998, Amaro Jr. transitioned to the front office.
After being let go by the Phillies, Am aro Jr. was hired as a first base coach for the Boston Red Sox, and then the New YorkForMets.him, he felt that opened another kind of world in the dugout, the club house and with the players.
It also marked the first time he made a major league team.

“It’sFame.pretty cool and unique to be part of two different Halls of Fames. I don’t know that there are too many people who have had that opportunity. I take a great deal of pride in my background and thank my parents for helping me reach these opportunities,” Amaro Jr. said.
Within the different capacities his fa ther was in, Amaro Jr.’s knowledge and exposure toward the sport simply grew, and became the basis for him carving his own path into the sport.
“It was really a dream come true,” Amaro Jr. said. “It was the start of the re lationship that I’ve had with the Phillies for a long time.”

A partir de sus sesiones con una consejera de empleo, Cara empezará a narrar la historia de su vida, desde sus líos amorosos y su complicada relación con su vecina Lulu y su hermana Angela, a sus dificultades financieras, la amenaza de la gentrificación o descubrir que su hijo es homosexual.
“Cara Romero nació en 2017 cuando Trump era presidente y yo entonces sentía mucha desesperación en mi vida. No encontraba una editorial para mi anterior libro, Dominicana, y estaba pensando seriamente en ponerme a estudiar derecho de inmigración o algún campo en el que realmente pudiera ayudar a la gente. Pero un día, mientras esperaba un tren en Nueva York, justo cuando quería tirar la toalla con la escritura, Cara Romero empezó a hablarme,” dijo Cruz a AL DIA.
Lo cierto es que las historias siempre han estado presentes en la vida de Cruz. “Vengo de una familia de narradores increíbles. Ahora que recuerdo esa época de mi vida, me doy cuenta de lo mucho que aprendí sobre contar historias pasando tiempo con mi abuela, que hilaba cuentos apasionantes e hilarantes en su cocina”, recordó.
Cruz acaba de publicar su cuarta novela, ‘How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water’ (‘Cómo no ahogarse en un vaso de agua’), una historia protagonizada por Cara Romero, una dominicana que se ve obligada a buscar trabajo por primera vez en décadas al perder su empleo en una fábrica de lámparas.
According to Cruz, the Latino community “has a lot of stories to tell that have not been represented in the mainstream. We make up a large percentage of the United States and it’s exciting to see so many new voices,” she said. “The more of us that get published the more interesting all of our writing will become because we are learning from each other as we innovate and expand the American literary canon how to flex the breadth and depth of our languages, experiences and countries.”

Cruz has just published her fourth novel, How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water (Flatiron, Sept 13) a story starring Cara Romero, a Dominican American woman in her mid-50s who loses her job in a lamp factory during the 2008 recession and she is forced back into the job market for the first time in decades. Over the course of her sessions with a job counselor, Cara recounts her tempestuous love affairs, her alternately biting and loving relationships with her neighbor Lulu and her sister Angela, her struggles with debt, gentrification and loss, and, eventually, what really happened between her and her estranged son, Fernando.

“Cara Romero was born in 2017 when Trump was president and I was feeling a lot of despair in my life. I had not found a publisher for my previous book, Dominicana, and I was seriously thinking about going back to school to study immigration law or some field where I could really help people. But then one day while waiting for a train in NYC just when I wanted to quit this entire writing business Cara Romero began speaking to me,” the author recalled. “I wrote everything she said to me. I never had a fictional character speak to me so clearly. She reminded me why stories matter. Why writing our stories matter. How listening to other people’s stories can be medicine for both the storyteller and listener,” Cruz added.

Tuve una infancia dura, pero los libros me dieron el lenguaje y la clave para imaginar un mundo y una vida diferentes. Escribir mi primera novela, Soledad, y fue una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre las realidades que estaba presenciando, pero también estaba escribiendo un libro que me gustaría leer,” explicó.
But what prompted her to take up writing professionally was to start reading books by women writers from the African and Latin American diaspora. “I wanted to be in conversation with them. I had a tough childhood but books gave me language and a key to imagine a different world and life. Writing my first novel, Soledad, was an opportunity to think through the realities I was witnessing but also I was writing a book that I wanted to read”, the author explained.

Uno de sus principios es creer que todo el mundo tiene algo que decir si se asoma a su curiosidad, por lo que pide a sus alumnos que escriban sobre lo que no saben o no entienden: “Por ejemplo, que miren directamente a alguien o a algo que les incomoda, a personas con las que no están de acuerdo, a cosas que les parecen misteriosas. Animo a mis alumnos a que lean sus borradores y dediquen tiempo a investigar los lugares, los seres y los objetos sobre los que escriben, y a ver qué más descubren que pueda enriquecer su trabajo”.Indica que “lo que ocurre con la curiosidad es que se necesita tiempo para seguirla y, si se tiene prisa por terminar un libro, tomarse el tiempo para preguntarse, descubrir y jugar puede parecer para algunos una pérdida de tiempo. Pero creo que es el camino más corto hacia un gran libro”, manifestó. z
Among her students there are people of color, whom she prepares to combat the two main difficulties that she believes the future holds for them: Invisibility and presumed incompetence. “But maybe the most exciting thing I see happening with writers of color, especially those of us leaning into an interdependent, collectivist model is that we are in this together and there doesn’t have to be only one of us getting all the cookies. We can share the cookies. And together we can create a more liberating sustainable model to live and write,” she concluded. z

“ I learned English from music and tv and then at school. So English is my academic language. It would have been great if schools offered dual language education, then I would be versed in both languages. Unfortunately xenophobia has robbed us from access,” she explained.
“For example, to look directly at someone or something that makes them uncomfortable, people they disagree with, things that seem mysterious to them. I encourage my students to read their drafts and spend the time researching the places,

The shrub, which stimulates the nervous system and calms fatigue, is used as “an escape formula” to cope with the pain of war, the frustration of unemployment and the lack of free dom of expression. It is an escape with out crossing the border.

“Makingcrises.this film was a gift for me because I came back after so long with out being there… My grandmother was there, she was already very old, and no one had gone to see her. You know, be cause of political issues we couldn’t go back. And when you go back, you can’t stop going back, life is like an eternal re turn. I lived so many years away that for me it was like trying to fill myself with everything I had not been able to see. To return was to reconnect with my family, with my grandmother, my friends and with those spaces that hold the memo ries of your childhood; and more than a nostalgia, it was to inhabit those spaces again, and to realize how strong this com modification of the plant, of the khat, had become. This has been used for mil lennia, not only spiritually but also so cially, it was already part of our culture. But now that had changed, it was an end in itself and it had come to replace food grains. And so I started interviewing a lot of people, from university professors to khat harvesters, and there I realized what is happening socially, politically and economically”, Beshir told ıfrom his home in SinceBrooklyn.itsrelease, the film has won the Grand Jury Prize at Visions du Réel 2021, the Reva and David Logan Grand Jury Prize at the Full Frame 2021 Docu mentary Film Festival, the Truer Than Fiction Award given by the Film Inde pendent Spirit Awards; and it has also been pre-nominated as a feature docu mentary at the 94th Academy Awards. And while its international projection is undisputed, Beshir’s film has not been screened in Ethiopia due to the civil war that broke out two years ago. “It’s my biggest wish, I hope we’ll be able to do it soon”, said an excited Jessica.
