"M
y art is about celebrating Mother Earth – it's plants, animals, ecosystems, and flowers. It is about the beauty of nature, and it celebrates the divine feminine and the inherent equality of genders and global cultures. I hope that when spectators look at my art, they are inspired to love, respect, and preserve our planet and work harder at preventing climate change." Award-winning artist, activist, and academic Kyra Belán creates masterful expressions with a pulsating mix of color, text, and figures. Belan swiftly tackles topics related to race, gender, and politics with many styles, such as painting, drawing, digital photography, and installations. Her art is grounded on environmental, social, and political issues, reaching a collective of crowds as her work has been used in political campaigns advocating for women's rights. In addition, she advocates for mother nature through metaphorical depictions of idols and animal scenery that she vividly portrays with popping realism. In this issue, she depicts female artists Georgia O'keefe and Frida Khalo as compelling protagonists in art history, once again unapologetically asserting her devotion to women's rights. Belán's displays of historical female role model portraiture paintings incorporate elements of nature in supporting her symbolic storytelling in connecting feminine strengths and their relation to planet earth. She features bold and vibrant “Georgia O’keeffe With Jimson Weed” Colored Pencil On Paper 30"x22”

colors in vivid combinations that collectively synthesize her subjects. Belán fuses exotic animal and plants life with tropical hues and delicate surfaces that ignite a dreamlike sense of wonder. Belán has an active role in one of the defining movements of our time, the E.R.A. -or Equal Rights Amendment-. Her involvement has gone as far as to donate one of her paintings to be used as the official image of the Virginia State E.R.A. campaign. In this painting, the Statue of Liberty holds the Equal Rights Amendment. "It is the official image for the campaign in Virginia to ratify the E.R.A., which will make the amendment the law of the land if ratified this November. It is expected to pass." "During the four decades of my career as an academic and social issues activist, I have been producing art that brings attention to these issues. At this time, our Mother Earth is experiencing significant climate change problems aggravated to the point of being critical to her survival. I feel that artists have an obligation to fight for Mother Earth and plan to continue to create art that supports these vital issues. She is the only Mother we have, and she creates us out of her fertile body. We must pull all our forces together to act on her behalf. Many of my artworks, whether paintings, drawings, mixed or installations, are about social issues, and the use of

color to create a certain mood or enhance a particular meaning always occurs. My colors are often intense, although the range and the nuances to convey a feeling depend on the subject matter. I try to capture and enhance the beauty of colors that Mother Earth creates. My art has always been about the beauty, majesty, and omnipotence of our planet, Mother Earth, and about the myths, symbols, and legends through the centuries that have celebrated our

planet as the divine Mother. My love for her and her beautiful animals and plants are always represented in my artworks. Whether they are created on an easel, as an installation, generated on the computer, as land art, or as performance art, these artistic expressions are always about her, the divine feminine, and about women that help preserve her, or help promote the well being of the planet and the beneficial matriarchal environments for all. I have always been aware that the current patriarchal civilization is not treating our Mother Earth well. This attitude deeply damages the environment and ultimately endangers the whole planet – and the entire human race. There is a need today, more than ever, to pay attention to the leaders of the Climate Change movement, the scientific community, and the indigenous tribes. We must join our forces to save our planet as time is running out. I feel that the artists must vigorously represent these issues through their arts. I hope that I am doing my part and am inviting other artists to join

this movement." Kyra Belán's rich educational background has played a crucial role in shaping her artistic career. With a deep and proactive relationship to human development and social evolution, Belán faces her collective head-on and hopes for a progressive future where balance is stored in all aspects of life.

Defining Art in the World Now Through the Eyes of an Artist
By Viviana Puello
W
e interviewed graphic designer and illustrator David Fleshman to find out the many ways art can be interpreted in the world today.
" I am a graphic designer and an artist; I put in my best-detailed craftsmanship and the time needed to complete each project." David Fleshman There may never be two people who view things the same way. That is because each of us has our own beliefs, experiences, and values that influence how we see the world. Yet, among all the things we share but regard differently, one of the most profound is art. The human race has been captivated by art through the ages, generation after generation. What about now? The world has undergone many changes since great artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Pablo Picasso, and Frida Kahlo. Computers can now be canvases, cans of spray paint can now be paintbrushes, the sides of buildings can now be an artist's very own art gallery. Has the definition, purpose, and importance of art changed as well? To answer this question, we interviewed David Fleshman. A young and promising artist based in Las Vegas, Nevada. David Fleshman is a multi-disciplinary artist who creates colorful

abstract and figurative works employing painting and digital design. His works are inspired by master artists like Paul Cezanne and Wayne Thiebaudmaster and graphic designer Alan Fletcher. Fleshman successfully merges traditional and technical practices to develop a unique, cohesive style. He prefers oils on canvas and digital photography for his two-dimensional works and aluminum casting and mixed media for his sculptures. David enabled us to explore art in the modern age by revealing what art means for an artist like him. No matter what is happening in the world, art has always been a part of each day, whether we acknowledge it or not. So when you think about art, your work, and the work of others, what does art mean to you? "When I think about art, I think of all forms of art and the artists that have produced them." I feel art is a wonderful outlet for individual expression in any art form. Art allows an artist to be inspired by the beauty of the world. One of my inspirations for creativity is all the beautiful colors and shapes of flowers. Any and all flowers make me feel very happy when I see them as they are precious gifts everyone should appreciate."

Artists have always been thought to have a secret world where they see things differently. So what inspired you to share your inner world? "I feel that my inner or secret world where I envision things differently than others is my gift to the arts. My inspiration in sharing my inner or secret world with others is learning about what other artists are saying about the beauty of art. Art affects all people differently as it may trigger some emotional connection to the piece or a reminder of another time in their past. Art is magical in this way. No two people will have the same thoughts or reactions to the same art piece."
are quite a few causes that drive my inspiration for my work. One of them is global warming and the animal kingdom, which includes penguins. I hope that we can solve this problem without destroying or making more animals extinct. I would like my children and grandchildren to be able to appreciate all the special creatures of this world without just seeing them in a book or on the computer. It is much more enriching and memorable to be able to see them in their own habitats." Art has always had a place in the world, giving people the opportunity to express history and culture. With so much of society being dependent on technology, what role do artists now play in the world?
With so many opportunities to serve in our world today, are there any societal struggles or causes that drive your work?
"History and culture have always been dependent on art in some fashion. Without art, we would have never known what famous

favorite class in school has always been art. I love being creative, and I saw things a little differently when it came to making an art piece of my choosing. I also define success as having the public interested in my artwork and purchasing my pieces. In the future, I would like to be able to have my own art gallery and have an art display traveling to art museums throughout the country and the world." Committed to giving his best, David Fleshman skillfully translates complex emotions into a vibrant, dynamic, visual language. As his own emotions get entrenched in his creative process, his style develops and continues offering new views of the world we see. Art is something that artists share with everybody else, letting it affect everything and everyone. Doing so is now easier than ever before, thanks to the internet. Art acts as a connective thread between them and other people; art helps artists stay in tune with societal struggles and other important issues, keeping them grounded. Being so lets artists like David healthily define success. For him, being successful is simply having the gift of art and being appreciated instead of equating it with only self-serving things, like wealth and fame.

people looked like or what a far-off land with their culture was like. This gives the viewer a glimpse into the past or the present without having to go there physically. Today in our computerized world and with sophisticated technology available to artists of all walks of life, we have a greater opportunity to see more artists and their work from all around the world in various media. This couldn't be possible without the internet, social media outlets, and various other sites."

he ability to make thoughts and feelings visible is of the utmost importance in my life. But, over the last few years in particular, I’ve found I can no longer do this with the tools I have, as the news from all over the world crashes into my mind, battling for my attention with all its apparent significance. I am left helpless by this shrill pandemonium, full of disrespect and aggression, and by the unconstrained exploitation of nature. I’m still searching for my responsibility as an artist. It can’t be enough to live in an aesthetic ivory tower. I’m far too quiet with my canvass and my paints”. Katrin Alvarez Award-winning master artist Katrin Alvarez is known for her compelling, dreamlike, surreal paintings that represent the complexity of human situations. Alvarez focuses on the human figure while introducing multiple references such as objects, animals, etc. to enrich the composition conceptually as well as visually. Cont. next page

She has received many awards for her paintings since 1968, including The First Group show in Cologne in 1968, Art Basel in Switzerland in 1978, and Agora Gallery in New York in 2004, among others. In 2007, her piece Exorcism won the Allan Edwards Award - Painting On the Edge. In 2009, she received the Vivid Arts Network Award at the Museum Castello Estense and a Leonardo Award for Applied Arts in which she was given the first prize in 2013. In 1972, she received an award for her first solo show in Cologne, and in 2012 she came out with yet another celebration in Vienna. Katrin Alvarez' diverse and vibrant work is what has promoted her as an artist who has established her presence in the global art scene as a distinguished contribution to her creativity.

''The Power Of Thought'' Oil On canvas + Object, 41''x49''x4'' Featured on the back cover of the ATIM Summer issuem this masterpiece by award-winning artist Katrin Alvarez was also published in the interior pages of the ATIM Top 60 Masters 2017, our annual publication that compiles sixty of the most recognized master artists in the international art scene. ArtTour International was proud to present the award "Premio Alla Carriera" to master artist Katrin Alvarez, in recognition for a very successful career, and for her dedication and excellence in the arts. Only one "Premio Alla Carriera" is presented each year, and we are honored to recognize this great artist of our times.
Katrin Alvarez started as a journalist, going in-depth into the writing profession, but along the way she taught herself the art of painting, influenced and inspired by Michelangelo and Brueghel. Hidden inside each of Katrin Alvarez' paintings is a mood that is impossible to miss, the artist takes her audience on a visual journey as witnesses of people in different stances and circumstances along with elements that make an impact, slowly managing to blend in and propose some radical aesthetic and conceptual ideas. Alvarez's works are the perfect combination of expressionism and surrealism. Her paintings are troubling and provoking yet soothing, intimate and sensitive yet bizarre, upsetting yet blissful. The compelling and transcendent imagery in her art has a form of teaching, evoking an array of emotions in the viewer. Her masterful use of color and light and skilled knowledge of the human figure allows for perfectly balanced compositions that expand the perceptions of her audience, creating room for each viewer to form different self-interpretations of the art. Showcasing masterful drawing skills, Katrin Alvarez depicts all of the figures and other objects or elements on her canvas with exact precision, something that shows her work is the product of dedicated research. Alvarez uses the gaze in her subjects’ eyes as the focal point of her pieces carrying a full palette of fascination, the result, paintings that are thought-provoking, making use diverse media to have a multidimensional approach. Katrin Alvarez offers both personal and universal messages, as she aims to raise awareness and establish a fruitful discussion with her public considering a vast number of topics that need more consideration. Thus it is very natural that she structures her artistic expression in a way that invites active participation from the audience for the interpretation of her works.

Painting Is Like Falling In Love
“I
believe that creativity is about finding a unique synthesis between reality and abstraction. From early age, I was driven to writing and painting. This was my way of coming to terms with life's reality, and my artistic sensibility always tended to a zone between reality and abstraction. I wanted to look closely at the reality and see it clearly, yet also stand aside and see the reality behind a hue, a mist. When a teenager, I wanted to do both writing and painting, but as it was challenging to focus on two different artistic expressions, I focused on writing. After writing several novels, short stories, poetry collections, and plays, I claimed my right to express my experiences, emotions, and vision in painting. And the intense and, at times, rocky relationship between the late artist Bryan Ingham and myself must have contributed to this claim. But, after his death, my sensibility erupted, and I found myself painting passionately and obsessively. I think painting is similar to falling in love. One falls in love through idealization. Love is an abstraction, and the need for abstraction seems to be inherent in the human psyche. I'm also a believer in beauty, although I know that artistic beauty should not be beautiful as defined by society and fashion. Artistic creation is a claim for one's

primarily draw realistic portraits and do photography. The message I try to convey with my works is to show the beauty, uniqueness, and positivity the world still offers. I was blessed to live my dream and become a professional roller derby skater, traveling the world and being on TV.
Unfortunately, injuries ended my dream, but eventually, after recovering, I became a firefighter. Unfortunately, injuries ended that career as well. Sadly nothing lasts forever, but while seeking treatments and things to become more mobile and cope with chronic pain, I got back into drawing and photography. Another dream of mine was having my works on display in an art gallery and published, but I never thought that would happen; thanks to Viviana and ArtTour International, those dreams have come true! isual reality is an ever-shifting, highly individualized experience. In any given moment, what we see reflects both our inner state and synthesis of outer qualities—light, depth, color, texture, movement, space. My exploration of dimensional photographic art represents an attempt to recreate the perceptual experience with its dynamic nature and hidden complexities. I use photographic constructions in my patented process; a single, often abstracted image is layered

over a transparent acrylic surfaces and superimposed on a subtle grid. The resulting visual phenomenon infuses the image with a sense of dimensionality and fluidity affected by such changes as the angle of viewing and light. Yet, perceptual mechanics are only part of the equation. Equally essential are universal principles of design that produce qualities we perceive as beauty. This is my aim: to skillfully combine technology and aesthetics to expand the viewer's experience of photographic art".

am an internationally known award-winning American Expressionist artist, inspired mainly by Picasso, ToulouseLautrec, Edvard Munch, Matisse, and the German Expressionists. My work is primarily figurative depictions of the female experience. I am inspired to speak about inequality and social issues women often face in Western culture, focusing on their courage and beauty.
I am committed and very passionate about gender equality and female empowerment, two subjects that are sorely lacking in society. My goal is to bring awareness to this problem and do my part to facilitate change. As an expressionist, I put my emotions, thoughts, etc., on canvas, and in that sense, every painting I do is autobiographical. was born in Ciudad Real / Spain. My work has a strong personal identity stamp that I apply with great freedom and without limitations. I use my creativity to be different and I look for new artistic proposals that surprise and excite. My good imagination has been and is essential to develop creative and innovative works that interact positively with the viewer’s gaze. My training, among others, as a Project and Organization Engineer, makes me work in an orderly and methodical way, studying the best alternatives, supervising good execution, introducing scientific topics, balancing the composition and making painting a walkable space for the viewer. As a result, images are produced with elaborate precision workmanship, with impressive density and depth that are visually captivating. That is why I prefer to work in large format. For me, the artist’s work is the embodiment of his inner self in a tangible way. Therefore, my works are not intended to be mere decorative objects, but rather a skillful source of provocation that encourages the viewer to participate and, at the same time, to turn him into a creative artist during the course of his scenic journey and, during the time that the images remain etched on your retina”.

nterpretation of the term “urbanica” in the vocabulary of the artist Amir Chodorov links to a different and additional aspect of his artistic creation since He strives to achieve originality and uniqueness. “Astist man paints with his brains, not with his hands.” Michelangelo. Amir went deep inside the renaissance artist and their methods, especially the “Fresco” technic that enabled them to create artworks like in the Sistine Chapel ceiling in Rome. It’s taken him almost 40 years to develop it to create unusual artworks that build up from 100 -600 pics. His photographs invoke in the observer astonishment mixed with optimism, a limitless identification with him. In his unique working method, Amir narrates using exact frames,
illuminated and unique, just as creators of cartoons achieve three-dimensional wholeness. Chodorov brings us the contemporary influence of the digital world, and his creations wave from pixels that our eyes never tierd of seeing. Furthermore, his artwork emphasizes the victory of the spirit, inspiration, and beams of light he found within himself. Amir has succeeded in intensifying the insignificance of the individual, harking back to the Romantic artistic trend in the 17th century, which stressed the smallness of man compared to the mightiness of God and his Creation. But whereas in the concept of romanticism, man is aware of his vulnerability and looks with amazement at the details that compose our colorful environment with no boundaries.

llustration, at its best, should reflect the nature and character of the illustrator and present the story, idea, or message that the author attempts to convey. Consequently, my work tends toward encouragement, or presentation of life as I would like it to be, and perhaps as I feel it was intended to be, rather
than a presentation of either a moral or philosophical message. I like to "capture images," ones that move me with their character or beauty. I believe that the vast majority of people neglect to enjoy and experience the small moments of life, which often
contain the greatest meanings for all of us. In general, if there is a "message" to be found in my work, it is primarily because that message is already present in the viewer, and I have had the experience of presenting it to the viewer.

My art is my escape, my passion, my reward in life." Born in Trieste, Italy, artist Gianfranco "John" Gambardella draws from his Italian artistic heritage. Based in Melbourne, Australia, Gambardella is inspired by the collection of ideas prompted from what is around him (both real and topical) and the many places he has been fortunate to visit worldwide. Gambardella's rich art palette and his love of structure and color are evident in his latest works from his ongoing theme titled: "The Venice Connection"–depicting architectural segments of this sublime city and its connection to its annual historical "Carnavale" reflecting that very essence. Inspiration “Flashes of Light appear to me spontaneously, involuntarily, provoked by sensory influences. Unannounced initial thought may derive from music, written text, built or natural environment, person, mood, event, or any combination. A concept gestates for days or weeks until the appropriate media becomes apparent. I create a sketch and try to understand it for a while. The piece then comes out of me very quickly—several pieces result, produced in rapid succession. was born a Catholic Christian in 1951 in France, in a small town called Royan, located by the sea, at the mouth of the Gironde, 120 km above Bordeaux. Luckily, my parents didn't impose anything on me; I grew up completely free. I enjoy the beauty and diversity of the landscapes of this region—large beaches but also coves, extensive forests, and cliffs and rocks. As far as my memory allows, I remember a solid spiritual appetite that only grew afterward. Consequently, I devoured many readings centered on spirituality, wisdom, religions but also painting. Thus, my two passions, spirituality, and painting were born and would accompany me throughout my life. At the same time, I graduated from engineering school. I have held various management positions in IT, sales, management, and finance. Between 2000 and 2011, I made several pilgrimages to India and stayed in several ashrams. I came back imbued with the sublime energies of the temples. My workshop is located in a village on the right bank of the Gironde estuary. My paintings are numbered chronologically to remind us that they constitute a journey and a sibling. Each painting is a journey or a thought. It is named and commented. hrough a digital overlay and collage process, award-winning master artist Monika Bendner creates multilayered, surrealistic experiences through a combination of photographic prints and mixed media. Her compositions, printed on various materials, create a narrative that evokes emotions and multiple responses from her viewers. With a background in photographic design, Monika Bendner's work has transformed as she's entered different phases of her growth and development as an artist over her active career. Her use of abstract lines and shapes conveys movement in their dimensionality, and her bold, rich, textured application of color emanates meaning through their saturation. Viscerally recognizable through their intensity and layers, Bendner's work is diverse and unconventional due to her various materials, methods, and techniques. She creates her work using various alternating combinations of canvas, metallic photo printing, acrylic, glass, photography, and found objects. Her metallic photographic prints are layered and expressed outside of time and space. She brings images into hyperreal kaleidoscope imagery pressed behind a thick acrylic/ glass amalgamation. With the common motiv of a figurative hand layered in most of her collections, she leaves her work open for interpretation.

started my art training in grade schoolboy attending classes at the Toledo Museum of Fine Art. Art was my high school and college (Bowling Green State University, Ohio State University, and Columbus College of Arts & Design). For employment, amongst a variety of positions, I finished as an Architectural Lighting Designer. After retirement, I resumed oil painting in a realistic style with a floral motif as my primary subject on a single stretched canvas. In 2008, I started combining multiple canvases of different thicknesses, removing the canvas, re-cutting and re-stretching the canvases to form shapes other than square or rectangular. Before painting, I would assemble and permanently secure all the pieces to form one stretched canvas with different thicknesses and shapes, sometimes tapered, sometimes rounded, some freeform, some with openings, etc. One of my latest paintings is in an “L” shape. That is meant to go around a wall corner. My next transition was to go from realism to cubism/ whimsical, but with a twist, the cubism/whimsical would include some realism, and I sometimes added just a tiny amount of glitter for a touch of sparkle when the light hits it. anadian sculptor Tom Ashbourne naturally thinks in 3D, and stone is his primary medium. Listening to the stone as he works, Tom seeks its true essence as a contemporary abstract sculpture. Tom Ashbourne's works showcase compelling shapes, graceful curves and lines, positive and negative space, and intriguing points of interest. He skillfully enhances the features and richness of the natural colors in the stone, amplifying their beauty through texture, light, and energy. In Tom's words, "Artists are at one with the art we create. Everything we create is a sum of all our experiences, how we see the world, and what we feel is aesthetically pleasing and visually interesting. My sculptures are an expression of my life, artistic influences, and my perspective on what makes a successful sculpture." In addition to the Emerald ARTYA award, Tom's talent has been recognized by major international awards, including DESTIG magazine's "Best Artists of 2020"; ATIM's 2021 "Collectors Choice "award; World Biz magazine's "Artists to Collect in 2021"; and American Art Awards "Best Non-Representational Sculptors after in the World (2021). Creating Beauty from Ashes By Tiarra Tompkins
E
ach of us will face tragedy in our lives. The pain, recovery, and rebirth that comes from adversity are as unique as our fingerprints. To describe the gamut of experiences and feelings that each one contains can be overwhelming, and yet, there is also tremendous beauty that comes from these experiences. Each opportunity and lesson a chance to take what they taught us and use it to serve others. From racial division to global warming, we are bombarded daily with loss, devastation, and division. How can humanity rise like the phoenix from these proverbial ashes? Through artistic creation, Master Fumagine artist, Frans Frengen, paints with flame. They are bringing the right ashes into the beauty of his work. Creating art with ashes and soot, Frengen paints with a flame, creating paintings and sculptures of soot and installing smoke, allowing us to see that beauty, hope, and restoration comes from the ashes. For a world suffering from rampant wildfires, systemic racism, and gender inequality, Frengen brings vision and hope with his work. Inspired by this technique of using real fire, ashes, and soot, real conversations around environmental conservation have been ignited, bringing into view so much that our world is suffering a loss.

It may still be decades before our world comes together in peace to face the obstacles facing our species and our planet. When we are striving for unity, artists like Frans Frengen are opening doors to critical conversations. Inspiring people from all over the globe to ask more questions about challenging topics. Questions like, what can we do to make a difference? To bring awareness to global problems, share support for environmental conservation, and share a vision of the beauty that truly comes from ashes.

Original from Belgium, Frans Frengen is one of the most genuine contemporary artists to emerge on the scene, developing a work process that is as intriguing as his artwork. Feng studied painting and drawing under prominent artists for some years before acquiring the signature "Imagine" technique that forms the basis for much of his work. Despite the bold, thick lines, smudgy appearance, and simple nature of Frengen's drawings and paintings, they are still highly detailed and reveal the artist's deep level of skill and technique.

ustralian artist, Wendy Cohen, creates vibrant and colorful abstract art with her focus on shape and geometric forms. She pays homage to nature by using collage, color, and texture to create a sense of fluidity and depth experienced in natural settings to form her abstract creations. In Cohen’s textured mixed media paintings, she collages hessian elements, cardboard, photos, paper, and recycled materials. The materials she uses in her work direct our attention to caring about our resources’ intentional use in all we do. Wendy Cohen’s style explores shapes, lines, forms, and colors in relation to natural and urban surroundings communicated in an abstracted language. Everything, in reality, is a conglomeration of shapes, and by integrating shapes into a cohesive body of colors and forms in conjunction with collage elements, Wendy aims to convey her poetry and harmonious rhythm to her paintings, developing playful imagery with a dynamic and inventive sensibility. “Emerald Leaves” Acrylic, Paper, Markers On Wood Panel Board, 12”x12”

Inspired by the architectural structures she sees in her travels worldwide and fleeting moments of city life, Shifra creates surrealistic otherworldly imagery by blending realistic photography with digital alterations. Levyathan captures people's diversity and colorful personalities, old and frail buildings, and the grandeur and sophistication of modern architecture. Her underlying message is the impact we have in the world we live in and the possibilities of a better future if we raise our consciousness to take care of our planet and learn to live in peace. “Dusk in New York” Fine Art Photography
The atmosphere of her photos reflects the mood; the more colorful ones depict happy and lighter moments, while the monochromatic prints depict sad and darker scenes. The computer-aided alterations add a twist to the composition and are an essential element of her unique style. The result is a digital painting that recounts a story. One that has already been told with words but now speaks loud through her photos. Shifra's brilliant photographic work continues to win over many art enthusiasts worldwide and has earned her numerous awards.

photo, a fingerprint, a signature, and DNA are all methods we use to identify a person, but they are means to match a name or face to an individual, not to describe who they are or their identity. For as long as I've used portraiture as the main focus of my paintings, it's not the identity or recognizable face I use to describe my portraits but more of a blueprint of how I approach portraiture. Many levels go into what makes a person's portrait. It's a fabric of many layers intertwined with a person's favorite foods, music, and movies. I use all of these concepts in portraits. Stemming from my lifelong love of the cinema, many subjects of my paintings are actors and actresses. However, I am not commenting on the celebrity or star system, but I use the celebrity as a hook to bring the viewer in. I don't focus on the face to describe or examine a portrait. Instead, by cropping or hiding certain features, I add more mystery to the portrait, bringing us to question who we are and what's beneath the surface. In my recent series, I've incorporated my love of skateboarding to explore themes of portraiture. With vibrant, iconic skateboard graphics coming from behind or bursting through the elegant black and white images of various actors and actresses, I've merged two of the most important parts of my life: skateboarding and art. I use the traditional format of the portrait to simultaneously comment on identity and create portraits that mean more than the individual being painted. With most of my paintings, the figure is the focal point, but my work explores the identity of others, not the subject. There is much to learn from a portrait, which goes well beyond the face”. “An Instant/An Eternity” Oil On Canvas, 36"x30"x3" 2016

believe that artists have an important role to play in changing the patriarchal world we live in. It is becoming increasingly clear that the present patriarchal military, social, political, religious, and economic institutions we live under are no longer workable or sustainable. This is especially true for women who have lived under a patriarchal system created and governed by men for the last 5000 years. This time period also marks the beginning of another important event—the dawn of written language and recorded history in 3100 BC. The confluence of these two events has affected the course of human history to the present time. As a male pro-feminist artist, I believe we are living at a significant turning point in human history. A monumental change is happening in regard to the status of women in Western and other societies worldwide. After millenniums of nearly universal patriarchal subjugation, many women now have the chance to visualize themselves in totally new ways and reclaim their inherent birthright. I believe the artist can play an important role in furthering this historical transformation. This is because the artist has the unique ability to create a visual image that can inspire viewers to reinvent themselves. The seeds for this transformation are planted when the artist

creates images that challenge women to examine their self-identity, an identity that is not influenced by patriarchal definitions of what a woman is or should be. One way to get beyond such definitions is for women to become aware of who they were in pre-historic times: before the invention of written language and before such definitions and restrictions were invented by a male ruling class and codified into written laws. It is now known from an abundance of modern archeological evidence that men and women in pre-patriarchal, Neolithic societies lived in a social system that highly revered women. My paintings are created to restore that kind of respect amongst men and a feeling of self-worth amongst women. To achieve such a balance, my art tries to restore that part of the pre-historic Mother Goddess culture that honored women for their sacred, life-giving, life-affirming powers: Powers associated with the moon and wild animals; qualities associated with art and aesthetics, dance and music, singing, chanting and ecstatic states of being. I think one way this can be accomplished is to provide a visual connection to woman's primal roots: her ancient relationship
www.arttourinternational.com

to Nature, her awesome ability to give birth to life, her Goddess based spirituality, and her psychic affinity to the Cosmic Powers, symbolically represented in my paintings as a Mandala image. As an artist, I wish to create a visual experience that lays the groundwork for a change in attitude—a change that will allow women to feel confident that they have the ability, strength, and resources to take control of their life. Ultimately, this can help us all

become more whole and more human. I want to see women worldwide realize their intrinsic worth as human beings. I believe it is important that women and men see themselves as leaders and workers capable of reinventing a world of peace and harmony that women and men once created for themselves. Under the loving care of the Goddess, such a world once existed in Neolithic times for hundreds of years”.

JEAN JACQUES PORRET WWW.JJPORRET.COM By Viviana Puello
O
riginally from Switzerland, award-winning artist, sculptor, and engineer Jean-Jacques Porret was exposed to art from the day he was born to a family of art and antique collectors.
Surrounded by beautiful antiquities, statues, and artwork every day, the seed of art was planted early, and he began carving wood when he was just six years old. He specialized in creating magnificent works with the lost wax technique of casting Bronze. Bronze primarily interested him "because it is the most demanding material which is responsive and sweet to the touch." After acquiring his engineering degree, Porret came to New York, anxious to learn English and build a life on his terms. There, his career was set into motion, which soon after led him to Chicago. Porret's thirst for knowledge took him to museums all over the world, absorbing all he could and sharing philosophies with the most prominent artist of the time. As an artist, Porret is continuously evolving, and his work and style have changed over the years. From sharper to a softer expression of molten metal. Porret muses, "If my approach seems figurative, I do not aim for a reproduction of the human form: what interests me is to transmit an abstract feeling or an idea rather than an image of reality. I use recognizable forms to arouse emotion, to give birth to sensations. I consider myself, in fact, an impressionist." This vision drives his work, and each sculpture imbues depth and intensity. Though he initially started his career by working in Bronze, Porret began experimenting with various stones. Dissatisfied, with his sculpture's bases, bought a granite and marble company, to have complete control in his work's creation. Yet this choice also evolved his work, and these various stone elements have become an integral part of his creative process and vision.
78 | FALL 2021
“Lost wax is a slow multi-step process that has endured only because of the results…knowing that my bronze sculptures will outlive me provides a comforting whiff of immortality. I believe everyone wants to leave something behind." Porret's work is entirely his, unique, crafted with his strong individuality and melded with tremendous sensitivity. His work and art, a dedication of exacting professionalism, and unswerving integrity have guided a life of total artistic commitment and personal expression.” - Jean Jacques Porret
Many of his signature pieces with their soft angular movements are harmoniously mixed with sharply defined textures captivating thoughtful designs with an immortal richness, boldness, and unsettling beauty. Porret's
work is infused with his personality, unsuppressed by traditional rules; his work is original and buried within each piece is the poetry of his work. Creating figures of humanity in the abstract, each form courageously melting into the next.

“Notorious” Bronze Sculpture
Emotions created from fragments of granite or marble jutting and piercing through the bronzes bring the concepts of nature and man together, creating a stunningly modernistic and seductive interpretation of the human form. When viewing one of his sculptures, the human form seems to leap out at the viewer. Jean-Jacques describes this movement as "rhythm in space." Porret said of his artistic method and vision, "I work without any preconceived idea…(I) continue instinctively, with one shape leading to the next, until the figure is simply rhythm in space".

Jean-Jacques Porret's bronzes can be seen in innumerable collections throughout Europe, Japan, and the United States. He was commissioned to create the bronze sculpture for the American-Swiss Friendship Award. The "Abage Encyclopedia of Bronzes" describes Porret as "an independent thinker, whose bronze sculpture might be described as a naturalistic, modern blend, in which forms are simplified to their essential rhythms and elements."

y paintings give me space to feel and express my visual delight in color, shape and form.” – Subodh Maheshwari
Award-winning artist Subodh Maheshwari celebrates life, love, and creative energy through masterful compositions that include symbolic elements. Her vibrant and evocative works are charged with color and emotion as she explores profound spiritual themes.

Maheshwari has an uncanny ability to fuse eastern symbolism with the western composition in bright pools of undulating color. Rajasthani's art influences are apparent in her pieces, and she manages to put accents of Hindi and Sanskrit symbols in a highly individual way. Subodh, born in Aligarh, North India, studied fine art at Agra University in India, California State University, and earned her master's at the University of California. It was at Irvine, where she won the Regional Fellowship Award and blossomed as an artist. She has since participated in prestigious exhibitions, and her works have been featured in renowned publications.

Enjoy this inspiring interview with Subodh Maheshwari and discover the heart of the artist. Growing up in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, North India, you learned folk art and classical music, but you now primarily create paintings as an artist. Would you say that classical music manifests itself in your work? If so, how? “I have always been interested in music since my childhood. My home always had devotion songs. My parents were very spiritual; they always had spiritual songs or rhymes playing. So from the beginning, I was exposed to classical music, folk music, and spiritual music. Art and music have always been in my blood, and when I say blood, I mean because my parents were always interested, and I got that passion from them. When I had done my Bachelor's in music and art, I learned the instrument sitar. Art and music have played such an essential role in my life and my artwork. Listening to Folk music is what inspires my pen and ink artwork. When I create Folk art, I am inspired by their line work. A simple line can be so
meaningful to tell a story. I love to play music, especially classical music like Sitar, Symphony, or Mozart when painting. I always feel when I'm creating my stroke while painting, it goes with the music. So when I go into my studio, I put on the music first; then I start painting or drawing to enhance my creative energy”. You studied art at Agra University, California State University of Fullerton, and the University of California Irvine. How was the experience for you as an immigrant, and how did the differences between the U.S. and your place of birth shape or influence your art? “When I came to this country in 1971, my children were young; I was a housewife, I was teaching Hindi Indian language. When my children had grown up and gone to college, at this point, I wanted to pursue my career and started going to college. When I started going to college, I was scared of how others would perceive me. When I walked into the class, I saw a mixture of different college students, some even in my age group. This gave me comfort knowing we were all in this together to learn art. I can tell you my first experience Cont. next page

when getting back into art. When I was mixing the color, I started to have tears of joy. What made me feel even more comfortable was the great faculty at Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine. One day one of my professors saw I was sketching the Rangoli, and he says “what are we drawing?” I explain what the Rangoli is, “We have a festival and do Ragoli on the Rangoliand this is very important in India.” I felt so honored that the faculty encouraged me to bring my Indian culture into my artwork. When doing the life drawing, my model would be from America, and my background would be from India.” Your paintings have won awards in a variety of categories. Do you have a favorite? If you do, which is it and why? “All of my artworks I feel as though they are my children. I am painting from my heart and my experiences; all the awards I have received in my life mean something to me. My favorite awards include the Fellowship Award from UC Irvine, Bharat Gaurav Award from India, four times 60 Masters, and my Lifetime Achievement Award from Art Tour International. While all of my artworks are important to me, artworks in which I am sharing my experience will always be my favorite. Artworks such as Kiran (Hope) or Nature Illumination are just some of my favorites. The greatest feeling as an artist is knowing how your work resonates with the viewer. Having your artwork touch someone’s heart will always be something that I am proud of as an artist.” You describe your art as a fusion of Eastern symbolism and Western composition. Could you tell us more about that? “I always bring the symbols of India and America into my work; then I create my own. I have always been influenced by 16th and 17th century Rajasthani and Mughal art miniature paintings. Creating a
composition is different in India than how it is here in America. We make one whole composition in Western art, but in 16th-century art from India, the composition is created into three sections. I was often inspired by the detailed work and the motifs in these styles of artwork; these artworks can be so detailed they can only be seen by using a magnifying glass. Artworks of mine where I show this style can be found in my symbolic paintings such as “Statue of Liberty,” “Regent of Liberty,” “Symbol of Liberty,” and “Liberty at Night.” I show an American subject matter in my Liberty artworks, but I dress Liberty in Indian clothing and surround Liberty with Indian motifs and English words written in Hindi. The combining of Liberty and India is how I am representing the combining of two worlds, two cultures coming together as one.” You use your work to draw attention to issues such as women’s rights and global warming. How does your art contribute to the efforts to address, alleviate, or solve these? “For any problem we want to solve, we must first find out what the problem is. I want to make society aware that we have political issues, women issues, racism, and global warming because it still exists out there in the world. Half of the people believe in it while the other half of people who do not. Every day the world is changing. The temperature one day is 80 degrees, and the next day the temperature is 90 degrees. Global warming is here, I can see it, and I can feel it. I believe it is important to believe in science. We have to use more solar windmills to produce more lithium, electric cars and put down more trees. I am currently working on a series now that deals with a lot of these global issues. I want to bring awareness through my work with hopes that one day we will find the solution”.

“M
otivated by the delicate balancing of elements of the past, choices made in the present, and a powerful intention to change the future, each thought and intuition become master to the emergence of form and method in my art-making. Complexity is a keyframe. The infinity of possible iterations of a form is a fascination intellectually and in terms of my method. It drives how I engage with materials to search for what is luminous to the eye and transcendent in meaning to the heart. My Art is intended to point to what is greater than the conventional and logic-based point-of-view. The under-painting is central to how this orientation shows up in the final works. In search for the luminous and transcendental, the under-painting is an investigative yet carefully orchestrated evolution of intentional layering in which I am immersed in a process of moving with a rich flow of contemplative and clairvoyant thought. In this movement, I press-in on the markmaking with brush and paint, then stand apart from it, then press-in again and so on “Silent Eighties” Acrylic On Canvas, 30”x40”
until the idea which wants to be noticed shows itself in relationship with my intention for an image. This process is deeply personal. It is intended to bridge to others and invite them to participate in the images I make, such that well-being is magnified by an encounter with something opening them to the intuition of a greater Whole. My long-time mentor and dear friend, Master Artist, Dragan Dragic (who I was blessed to meet and study with in France since 1999), has deeply influenced me through his conception of the extraordinary depth he reveals in the palette of Matisse. Dragan surrendered himself to these secrets in a lifelong journey of revelation and dedication, bringing me cause to examine and view his work with an appreciation of and engagement with the paradox of complexity coupled with simplicity. The outcome engendered confidence in portraying simplicity as the ultimate expression of complexity. Dragan encouraged me to see the beauty of abstraction lies in the various underlying hypostases combining or being in a dynamic relationship in such a way as to become conscious to the viewer as a living process. I continue to learn how incredibly liberating it is to affirm and elevate emotion as the intent of a painting or photograph—being fearless in approaching the image as a sovereign manifestation requiring my stand as one “getting to know” life, bringing forth clues for others, and trusting the process. This is the under-painting of the journey I have been so humbly given to fulfill.” These latest pieces were created in a collaboration (with artist Greg D.) under the profile name Lotus 97.7. “Duality” Acrylic On Canvas, 30”x40”

avid Puello is an emerging filmmaker and visual artist from Colombia. His new film Hasta La Raiz premiered in October 2021. The film reflects Puello's passion for our environment and highlights the beauty of his native country of Colombia. His photography follows the same theme, while he captures mesmerizing locations with the hope of opening a connection between the viewer and Mother Earth. David Puello, a photographer, filmmaker, and artist, is still very young, but you can already tell that he has what it takes to succeed. His films are more than just films; they're creative visions that leave a lasting impression on his audience. We recently spoke with David about his work as a filmmaker, an artist, and an environmentalist. He offered some fascinating perspectives on not only his art but also on our world today.
The film Hasta La Raiz In the film Hasta La Raiz, the viewer is captured by its style, and the digital technology Puello uses with eye-catching effects that steal our attention right away. But, beyond what you see onscreen, you can feel Puello's concern for environmental issues through themes like deforestation or pollution. After watching the film, it makes us wonder what kind of influence do we have on nature? How are we capable of damaging something as extraordinary as Earth? What are some ways in which we can contribute to keeping it alive? Or better yet, preserve her existence? The questions keep piling up while watching Hasta La Raiz as we are faced with the beauty of the mountains in Colombia, its forest, lakes, and waterfalls, and a world where nymphs appear to give you messages from the depth of our planet.

David Puello's photographs are wispy lines of color that capture the ghostly presence of his subjects. The imperfections come through more naturally in his photos. It's perfect for his goal of helping people see our connection with nature as imperfect but beautiful. In his own words: My work is both relatable and provocative. His philosophy is simple: If we change how we relate to nature –- both physically and mentally –- then we can be stewards for its protection. At only twenty two years of age, David Puello is already making a name for himself as a filmmaker and visual artist. His latest project is a stunning series of photographs that reflect his passion for nature while promoting environmentalism by exploring animals throughout their natural habitat.
