FROM THE COLLEGE DIRECTOR

Welcome

“Welcome to Bangor University International College (BUIC). BUIC is an embedded college on the Bangor University campus. Here, you can do the first stage of your integrated Bachelors or Masters course in a broad range of subjects before completing your degree at Bangor University. As a BUIC student, you will have access to all university services and facilities so will feel part of the university from the day you start. As College Director of BUIC, I am committed to ensuring that you receive the best possible learning and teaching experience. You will study with students from all over the world. Our dedicated team of experienced tutors will help you adjust to academic life in the UK so that you are ready for the transition seamlessly into University. Our tutors focus on developing your English language and academic study skills as well as core subject knowledge. Our classes are typically small and interactive in nature. You will receive a lot of individual support and regular feedback on your academic performance. All of this will help you to increase your confidence in communicating in a higher education context and put you on the path to both academic success and future career success. At BUIC, we are incredibly proud of the high level of individualised support that we provide to all our students on every step of the student journey, from pre-arrival to post-departure. If you join us, you really will feel looked after and part of the BUIC family. During the Covid-19 Pandemic, we will do everything to ensure that there is a safe environment for students and staff. The University campus will be open to students for the September 2020 intake, on 12 October 2020 for BUIC. We will be providing students with a Blended Learning experience which will be a mixture of online and on campus delivery with social distancing measures in place. For students who are unable or not ready to start on campus in October, you can also start your studies online on 12 October and transfer to online study when the time is right. Bangor University International College (BUIC) is a specialist embedded college offering integrated degree courses, where international students can begin their studies at Bangor University. BUIC delivers the first stages of the International Incorporated Bachelors (IIB) and the International Incorporated Masters (IIM). Continue onto your chosen degree

Following successful completion of stage one at BUIC, you will continue your studies directly with Bangor University. The University has a wide range of fantastic and highly regarded degree courses in subjects ranging from Banking and Finance to Psychology and more.

Choose your level of study

We offer two levels of study at BUIC: The IIB and IIM. BUIC delivers the first stage of your IIB or IIM. Within the IIB, there are two levels, known as International Year Zero (IYZ) and International Year One (IY1).

PRE-SESSIONAL ENGLISH Provides you with an initial period of intensive English language training and assessments. This academic English support is delivered over half a term (6 weeks) or one full term (12 weeks). You will need to successfully complete this before you can continue onto your chosen pathway. The number of weeks you complete will depend on your current English level. See more on the applicable IIB or IIM course pages.

Our online course components have been designed to manage current social distancing measures and travel restrictions to allow all our students the opportunity to continue their studies as planned. However, there are many advantages of online learning such as the convenience it offers. With your pre-recorded content, you can learn at a time that suits you. It also equips you with the digital skills you will need one day in future employment.

Important equipment you will need for our courses

All students will need to have access to a PC or laptop, with microphone and speakers, and a good internet connection throughout their course in order to engage with the on-line element of their course and assessed work.

Blended Learning

Keeping you safe on campus Bangor University has adopted a range of health and safety rules on campus such as a robust cleaning schedule, hand sanitising stations and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Bar Uno, on the Ffriddoedd student village and Barlow’s, on the St Mary’s student villages are other popular venues for students. The Pontio centre is a landmark building which links Bangor University and the community which surrounds it. In addition to providing a base for the Students’ Union, Pontio houses a cinema, theatre, lecture theatres, and places to eat.

Bangor is relatively easy to travel to, with excellent connections to major cities and international airports in the UK. The city is just over two hours by train from Liverpool and Manchester, and three and a half hours from London*.

Undeb Bangor, our student union, is one of the most active in the country. Running the University’s clubs, societies and volunteering projects, it also provides student support as well as a range of entertainment. Membership of the Student Union’s clubs and societies is free of charge for all students.

Internships

If you have an idea of what sector you want to work in, an internship or placement can be a good way to gain experience and build contacts – or just to see what it is like to work in a particular field. Bangor University runs undergraduate internship schemes twice a year that allow students to work in a professional environment while learning relevant skills and earning money. There are a wide range of internships, from medical research to marketing and promotion; some courses also offer short work experience placements or projects with local companies.

Bangor Employability Award (BEA)

Open to all students, the Bangor Employability Award recognises transferable skills built through ordinary university activities. Students gain points towards the Award through volunteering, attending workshops or actively participating in the Student Union’s clubs and societies. The IIB degree offers a 4-year degree option at Bangor University in a range of popular subjects. International Year Zero (IYZ) is the first year of your IIB and is designed to help you gain extra skills in your subject area, as well as English language. IYZ is studied across three terms. COMMON MODULES FOR ALL IYZ PATHWAYS As well as modules unique to your specific pathway, you will also study several modules common to all pathways. Compulsory modules include: Business Functions A basic introduction to the study of business and management, this module introduces the function of marketing in different types of businesses and organisations. It considers issues around the liberalisation of trade and the development of the global market and how they have affected businesses and the emergence of the international manager. Business Law Providing you with a functional knowledge of the basic rights and liabilities in law affecting modern businesses, this module covers types of business entity, such as partnerships and companies. Compulsory modules include: Database Design and Usage This module is a practical introduction to the technology and terminology around tabular data, and the construction and use of a database. You will develop a database for a given situation – for example, a simulated business using current standards and appropriate software – and use that database to identify and solve problems. Electricity, Electronics and Fields This module provides you with a basic knowledge of electricity and electronics, and of fields, that you will be able to apply in real engineering and computing situations. You will learn about current and charge, Ohm’s Law, capacitors in DC circuits, measuring AC, transistors and logic circuits. Further Mathematics This module covers complex mathematical skills and knowledge, such as: algebra, including partial fractions and inverse functions; the circle;

trigonometry; differentiation and integration, including trigonometric, and logarithmic and exponential functions; and solving firstorder differential equations with separable variables, vector and vector methods in two and three dimensions, and forces as fixed vectors. Mechanics Continuing to develop your maths skills and knowledge, this module introduces you to the relationships between forces, linear motion and energy, and the conditions for the static equilibrium of a body. ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE IIM WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will study a number of modules throughout the duration of your course. Core modules include: Auditing This module considers the importance to a business of the monitoring of its financial performance, both in terms of meeting the requirements of the regulatory environment within which businesses operate and of providing information of a company’s performance and its financial standing to its executive and shareholders. The external auditing process is reviewed, including evidence requiring to be produced, compliance tests and substantive tests, analytical review and computer-assisted audit techniques, completion checklist and the final auditor’s report and the need for properly submitted accounts to the Registrar of Companies. Financial Accounting The aim of this module is to provide an introduction to accounting in terms of theory and practice and covers the main applications of ICT to financial accounting. It provides you

with an understanding of the technical aspects of the subject, including double-entry bookkeeping, calculation of key ratios and the preparation and use of financial statements with a focus on limited liability companies. It considers appropriate UK practice but focuses on International Accounting Standard practice. Finance, Investment & Banking The main aim of this module is to provide you with an introduction to corporate finance. You will examine the concepts and principles underlying key financial decisions, risk and return, the evaluation of projected capital investment and analysis of financial performance, for example. The module further offers insights into the nature of the financial instruments, financial markets and financial intermediaries, with particular focus on the banking business. Management Accounting This module focuses on the techniques of management accounting that are used to collect, process, and present financial and quantitative data within an organisation to aid performance management,

BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT IIM WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will study a number of modules throughout the duration of your course. Core modules include: Business Environment This module introduces you to economic theories and systems and relates these to the environment within which businesses function. You will further be equipped with the critical skills to apply the concepts and principles you study in a business context. You will be taught to consider the impact of government policies and actions on businesses and to look beyond national policies to the influence of wider economic and political groupings of states. Business Strategy and Marketing This module provides an understanding of key concepts, recent developments and issues within the study of strategic decision-making within business organisations with an emphasis on a critically evaluative approach to approach and outcomes. You are also introduced to the theories and concepts of marketing as a business function and will relate

theory to practice in terms of setting a company’s marketing objectives, formulating and implementing a marketing strategy, sales and promotional activities, market research and the impact of technology on marketing activities. Finance, Investment & Banking The main aim of this module is to provide you with an introduction to corporate finance. You will examine the concepts and principles underlying key financial decisions, risk and return, the evaluation of projected capital investment and analysis of financial performance, for example. The module further offers insights into the nature of the financial instruments, financial markets and financial intermediaries, with particular focus on the banking business. Management Accounting This module focuses on the techniques of management accounting that are used to collect, process, and present financial and quantitative data within an organisation to aid performance management, cost control, planning and pricing and, through these, the process of managerial decision-

making. You will be made aware of the major accounting concepts and of how financial statements are used to support companies in their measurement of profit and valuation of assets and in their planning for future strategic moves and developments. Management in Context The main aim of this module is to develop a greater understanding of some of the key activities and functions associated with establishing and managing a business. It considers the legal bases of different types of businesses and, within these, the nature and impact of different styles of management and leadership. You are introduced to the fields of operations management and organisational behaviour within business and consider how businesses introduce and manage change.

ABOUT THE COURSE Psychology is an applied science which seeks to understand the behaviour of the mind. BUIC offers you an alternative route to a masters in Psychology at Bangor University. PSYCHOLOGY IIM WHAT WILL I STUDY? You will study a number of modules throughout the duration of your course. Core modules include: Research Methods During this module students will learn about deploying the scientific method in planning, undertaking and interpreting research within Psychology. Scientific Communication During this module students will learn about the scientific method and the importance within a scientific context of conveying information in a clear and effective manner with due regard to the style, language, format and conventions appropriate to scientific discourse. Personality and Individual Differences This module addresses key topics within the field of personality, intelligence and individual differences. The module is split into two parts: intelligence and personality and each will be assessed separately. The areas covered involve historic and current perspectives on personality, including psychoanalysis, humanistic and trait approaches. Individual

differences and intelligence will be explored including intelligence testing, emotional intelligence and heritability of intelligence. Professional Studies Project The content of this module will include an introduction to the place of reflective practice across the professions and an exploration of the concept of person-centred practice in relation to own professional context. Group based discussions will take place to encourage a sharing of the range of experiences the students bring to the whole group and a collaborative approach to learning. Concepts in Psychology The emphasis of this module will be on providing students with a conceptual and historical understanding of psychology and how it has developed into the academic discipline that it is today. The focus of the course will be on theoretical understandings of psychology – how psychology as a science pursues discovery of new things through experimentation and scientific endeavour, this course will focus on how these findings are understood and interpreted

using classic and contemporary theories. Introduction to the Welsh Context The aim of the module is to introduce students to the largely public settings in which psychological services are planned and delivered to clients in Wales. This will enable students coming to Bangor to study courses in professional subjects to understand and contextualise the learning more effectively.

To start your application you will need the following: A copy of a valid passport A copy of your original qualification certificate and transcripts

Certified translation (if applicable)

A personal statement

This should outline why an applicant has chosen the University, the selected course and future career plans

Any current and previous visas, CAS and copies of exit stamp. Please also include a copy of any previous visa refusal letters

Evidence of English language proficiency at the required level

We accept a range of English language qualifications. If you are studying Pre-Sessional English prior to the main course you may have an IELTS score of 4.5 overall with minimum 4.0 in each element. If you are not studying PreSessional English prior to the main course you should have achieved an IELTS or equivalent

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER YOU SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION? STAGE 1: Check qualifications We will carefully review your application and check your academic qualifications and level of English language is suitable for entry to the chosen course. STAGE 2: Issue conditional offer Assuming the application is successful; we will send you a formal offer of a place. STAGE 3: Acceptance offer Once you’ve met all the conditions outlined in your Conditional Offer we will send you an Unconditional Offer. STAGE 4: Submit deposit To accept a place on the course, you will need to make a deposit to confirm your offer. The amount of your deposit will be confirmed in the Offer Letter. STAGE 5: CAS issued Upon receipt of the deposit we will request your pre-CAS documents. Once the pre-CAS documents have been received, we will issue you a Certificate of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number. STAGE 6: Apply for visa You will then need to apply for a visa if necessary. STAGE 7: Final payment Advance payment of remaining fees will be required prior to arrival. STAGE 8: Accommodation Once you have chosen BUIC as your firm choice, you’ll receive an invite to book your room and we will provide you with all of the necessary details. STAGE 9: Pre-arrival Before the start of the course we will send you details of how to register and a welcome pack. STAGE 10: Welcome to the UK! We will also ask for details of your flight to the UK. We can arrange for a taxi transfer upon your arrival at a UK airport (additional fees apply). 73
