Equipment World started selling (and occasionally renting) forklifts in the ‘70s – and in fact, it became the second-oldest Toyota forklift dealer in Canada in 1976. After completing his post-secondary education and working outside of Equipment World for a multi-national supply company for several years, Lyle joined Equipment World in 1987. “Working outside of the family business really expanded my thinking in terms of the possibilities for what was our fairly small family business at the time,” Lyle says I also was meeting customers and forming relationships that I would be continuing on with later when I joined Equipment World.”

At the outset, I want to acknowledge that Thunder Bay rests on the Traditional Territory of Fort William First Nation, signatories to the Robinson Superior Treaty of 1850, and we also recognize the shared lands of the Métis peoples. This out of respect and acknowledgment for the Indigenous Peoples of Canada.
We are currently witnessing a remarkable era in mining for Northwestern Ontario, as it enters its most significant boom period ever. Critical minerals, such as lithium, and future prospects like graphite, are leading the charge as Ontario moves toward establishing a complete supply chain for electric vehicle (EV) batteries and auto production. The Ring of Fire project continues to hold immense promise, and with the arrival of Ring of Fire Metals, we are now closer than ever to unlocking the potential of this vast, mineral-rich area. Furthermore, gold, platinum, and other precious metals remain essential pillars, with ongoing and new projects significantly contributing to the region’s economic growth.
Thunder Bay, being the hub of Northwestern Ontario’s mining and exploration sector, plays a pivotal role in driving these developments. As the largest Canadian port on Lake Superior, we are home to engineers, contractors, builders, suppliers, and branch offices for many of these ventures. On the horizon, we can glimpse the emergence of other mining-related industries, such as lithium refining and shipping.
The CEDC is committed to being there every step of the way, supporting local and external companies coming to Thunder Bay and the region. The latest economic report for Thunder Bay likely marks a watershed moment in the economic history of Northwestern Ontario. For decades, mining has been forestry’s little brother in a region rich with natural resources. But the downturn in the paper industry in 2008 combined with the coming critical minerals boom (including the Lithium Rush) means that those two industries are likely to switch positions soon.
In June 2023, the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) released a report on the Economic Profile for Thunder Bay prepared by the Northern Policy Institute (NPI). This review of seven key sectors found that forestry directly added approximately $47 million to Thunder Bay’s GDP, while mining directly contributed $40 million.
Further, forestry directly employed 364 people living in Thunder Bay compared to 278 in mining. Of course, most direct forestry and mining activity happens outside of Thunder Bay. These numbers also do not include the revenue and jobs generated by service and supply companies, many of which service both industries. But these numbers act as a useful bellwether to gauge what is happening in the region as a whole.
What’s most striking in this case that the number of people working in forestry employment has shrunk by 32% from 2016 to 2021 while mining grew by 9%. Northwestern Ontario may have been victim to the global downturn of paper demand, but the region will be the beneficiary of the increased demand for gold and critical minerals such as lithium, platinum, and nickel.
It’s the indirect economic activity that will really drive prosperity for the city. For example on June 19, 2023, Avalon Advanced Metals announced it had purchased land on Thunder Bay’s waterfront to build a lithium hydroxide plant. The company said its “integrated project” of mine and processing will create approximately 500 jobs, most of which will be in Thunder Bay – and all of which will be in Northwestern Ontario. In turn, the raw materials produced here will go on to drive the EV battery industry in southern Ontario and beyond.
That’s just one project. Other players in the coming Lithium Rush include Green Technology Metals, Rock Tech Lithium, and Frontier Lithium. Outside of lithium, critical mineral mining companies include Impala’s Lac Des Illes mine (palladium). Generation Mining (palladium and copper) near Marathon, Tartisan Nickel near Kenora, and Ring of Fire Metals (nickel) are also in various stages of development.
Critical minerals may be the new gold, but the old gold is doing just fine as well. Newmont, Kinross, West Red Lake Gold Mines, and Barrick Gold are some of the established gold mining companies.

There is still a long way to go to ensure economic parity on projects for Indigenous partners in the region. But the number of opportunities for First Nation partners is growing, which is a positive sign. Company and government policies are shifting. Mindsets are shifting. We will continue to see Indigenous participation grow in most if not all areas of economic development throughout Northwestern Ontario.

Argonaut Gold in Dubreuilville has started producing and Greenstone Gold Mines draws ever closer to pouring its first gold bar while Treasury Metals, First Mining Gold, and others are in the exploration and development stages. In other words, gold is not going away any time soon.
Currently, Northwestern Ontario’s mining industry contributes $1.5 billion to the provincial economy. That represents 20% of the Ontario’s $7.5 billion mining industry. Those numbers are poised to grow as the critical minerals boom rolls out and more mines come online.
It’s too early to count out forestry as a major contributor to Thunder Bay and region’s economy – as of 2021, it is still the big brother. After some huge dips, the forestry industry has stabilized somewhat in recent years. Resolute recently sold Thunder Bay’s pulp and paper mill to Atlas Holdings. Resolute’s sawmill in Fort William First Nation has
operated for over 20 years now. Energy is another area of tremendous growth, both in terms of generation and transmission. The recently completed East-West Tie is one transmission project along with the ongoing Watay and Waasigan projects. The Little Jackfish Hydro Project just north of Lake Nipigon will help generate more power for the region including possibly nearby mining projects.
The coming boom also marks a new era in social licence for the natural resource sector. Surrounding First Nations and Indigenousowned businesses in Northwestern Ontario, who have traditionally been left out of the economic equation, will be participating in most if not all projects. More and more natural resource companies are adopting formal policies to include Indigenous partners. Leading the way are companies such as Hydro One, which last year committed to partnering with Indigenous companies 50/50 on every major transmission project in Ontario.
Of course, “boom” is shorthand for “a whole lot of economic opportunities, all at once.” The Thunder Bay CEDC is helping harness those economic opportunities. For example, on everyone’s mind is the labour needed to build and operate these new mines. Andrew Kane, Natural Resources Business Development Manager at CEDC, said the city and region are working hard to be ready. In September 2022, the CEDC invited all stakeholders to a workshop to discuss the topic. It’s just one way the CEDC helps connect companies moving to the area with labour, suppliers (including Indigenous-owned companies and joint ventures), and other supports to make the transition easier.
“Northwestern Ontario is the next mining powerhouse. If you think the boom is here, you haven’t seen anything yet,” Kane said. “The CEDC is here to help all businesses moving to the region and those already operating to help make developing our resources a smoother process for everyone.”

In July, CEO Tim Hill recorded a special end of year message for employees. “Looking back over the past year, we accomplished a great deal,” Hill said in his two-minute video.
“We experienced strong safety performance across the operation, and a regional mine rescue win. We achieved our mine expansion plans. We awarded our first 11 Impala Canada Paving the Way educational scholarships. We launched our Living our Values Award and celebrated the well-deserving winners. We diverted thousands of water bottles from landfill by installing new water refill stations around LDI, and our employees raised more than $50,000 for community organizations during the Christmas holidays.”
Hill said none of the achievements would’ve been possible without all of the valued employees and contractors who keep the Lac Des Iles mine running all year. In the video, he looks ahead to the new year and some goals he has set out for the entire Impala Canada team to achieve.
“Together we will continue to achieve our goals and create a better future for our families and community.”
The company also produced an impressive video called: This is Mining, in partnership with Confederation College as part of a 3-year $120,000 investment by Impala Canada, announced in 2022. This unique and important partnership will help the College increase awareness, engagement and enrolment in skilled trades training and the video is just the first of many things to come.
Set to music and using drone footage and interviews, the video takes you from the College’s campus to the LDI site, showcasing many mining career opportunities and a few familiar faces along the way.

“It’s a great living, it’s a rewarding career and it’s lucrative. I would say definitely take a trade,” Brandon, Impala Canada’s Fixed Plant General Foreman says, adding that without his education from Confederation College, he wouldn’t be where he is today.

Impala Canada Limited was formed on December 13, 2019 when North American Palladium was acquired by Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (the Implats Group), an integrated global platinum group metal (PGM) producer. from longhole open stoping to the sublevel shrinkage (SLS) mining method in the lower part of the mine, which has increased total ore recovery, lowered operating costs, raised production rates and improved geotechnical ground conditions.
The company is now applying the SLS mining method to the upper part of the mine to help it become one of Canada’s largest and lowest-cost underground mines.

Ontario is mining the fuels of tomorrow, today. Ontario’s Mines Minister George Pirie isn’t shy about the short-term and long-term potential impact of northern Ontario’s mining industry on the Canadian and global economy.
In a State of Mining address at the Canadian Mining Expo in Timmins in June, Pirie delivered a passionate and personal essay about Ontario’s mining future. “It’s my responsibility for the ring of fire,” said Pirie. “But another mandate I have is to ensure that Ontario is the number one mining jurisdiction in Canada. It allows me to talk about a number of very important points, including energy.”
“I’m talking about a hundred year future that we’re looking at right here in Timmins as the hub of mining in Northern Ontario and in Canada. This is where it’s going to be.”
Pirie pointed to the discovery of oil in the United States in the 1800’s. “They found oil in Texas. And on the back of that, the US became the number one economy. There’s some other factors that made that happen. But it was basically because they had found the world’s, at that time, largest source of fuel. That’s what we found here in Northern Ontario. And this is why mining is important because we have to mine the fuel – it’s important.”
Pirie says mining was always important but now it’s critical because if we are going to solve the challenges of our society, we have to mine the minerals.
“The minerals have to come out of the ground. We’re mining the fuels of tomorrow today in Northern
Ontario. It’s very important for every person in this room and every part of the mining industry. It’s important to your children. It’s important to your grandchildren.”
The Mines Minister says New York investors are taking notice. “Somebody has found out that geez, we’ve got to get started on this. Mining is important. Mining is critical. And that’s what we’re sitting on right now. We’re sitting on the future.
Pirie described how the ministry is trying to create an attractive climate. “The ministry doesn’t build the mines, but it sets the table - so these mines get built. The other thing that’s incredibly important, it’s how we’re building these mines.”
Pirie turned his attention to sustainability. “The definition of sustainability is that we meet the needs of the current generation without sacrificing the future generation. When I travel around the country and I go to the Creighton mine, I’ll pick on that one, 9,600 feet deep, it’s a Vale
mine, they’re running it with electric vehicles. The air is clean, it’s hot, but it’s clean.”
The Minister said there are a lot of companies developing and building EVs. “And as I said you couldn’t find EVs, the haulage vehicles, the scoops at the show because they’re in demand because the industry is changing. Newmont with the Borden Mine has got a good start on that technology. Agnico is committed to transforming into the EV technology. They’re committed. Canada-Nickel is committed to their haulage fleet will be hydrogen.”
“My father was born in 1920 in a house behind the mill and I saw the evolution of the mining sector and it was the evolution that started really with the people that worked it. There’s a sign on the tailings on the way between South Porcupine and Timmins that says Reclamation in Progress. That reclamation started way back in the 60s when that dam was decommissioned, and it was the operators that said we’re going to do this. You know why? Because their children played in those areas. They’re committed to it and that’s what good operators do. That’s what good service people do. They’re committed to mining correctly. It’s what makes me so proud about mining in Canada and make no mistake. Canadian miners are the best miners. Ontario miners are the best miners and because where I’m from I think the miners from Northern Ontario are the best. We’re very proud, we’re dedicated, and we’re committed to doing it

The Minister also underlined the importance of the next generation of miners. “I met three or four school groups from Northern Ontario, and they all want to get involved in mining because they can see the future. And these are kids that want to get into the trades or they want to be engineers, and they want to be involved in mining because this is the place, this is where the future is, and you’ve got to be proud of that. These kids know that they’re standing there and they’re going to be responsible for changing the economy, not only in Ontario, Northern Ontario, but globally, as we get off fossil fuels.”
“The kids in that room will be leading the charge. And as soon as you say that, they stand up and say, boy, we are important. We’re doing the right things. We’re changing the economy. We’re changing society. And we’re changing it as miners. Never forget that,” he add-
ed.
Pirie talked about three young people he met underground at Creighton. “There’s three youth I met at 9,600 level. One was from New Liskeard, one from Ramore and the other was a young indigenous lady from Moosonee and she was ecstatic to be working at 9600 feet at the Creighton mine because she wanted to be an electrical engineer to work on the equipment at that mine.”
Pirie says mining was always essential and now it’s critical. “The gold guys, the silver guys, all of the base-metal guys, they’re phenomenal, and it allows me to talk to them with impunity, with great pride about the quality of work that they do and the quality of people that they are.”
Northern Ontario is also a terrific place to find quality people according to Pirie. “Well, that includes finding guys like Danny Gagnon (President of Gowest Gold), Dave Russell is here at the back, finding guys like Dave Russell to run the Galleon op-
eration, that run the Lake Shore Gold operations, the Newmont operations, the Agnico operations. How do you find them? Yes, they’re homegrown, but we’ve got phenomenal educational facilities as well, Northern College, Cambrian College, College Boreal, Laurentian, Lakehead, Confederation, all across the North, we are generating quality people.”
Pirie turned his attention to some of the lesser-known projects. “We’ve got rare earths in Northern Ontario, about 20 miles north, just west of Otter Rapids. Phenomenal deposits in the capital-facing structure, very poorly understood. That’s, you know, in board mine is just on the edge of the capital-facing structure. We’ve got a potash mine just in the Hearst area which is being developed by Fox Resources. That structure is phenomenal and it’s got an incredible potential because it’s underexplored and it’s underestimated. Our regional geologist is focusing on rare earths. But we’ve got another source of rare earths. We’re probably going to be producing rare earths out of the Sudbury area with Mirarco in combination with Vale and Glencore.”
Pirie paused and underscored the importance of Ontario developing rare earth mineral deposits.
“If China embargoed those earths we would not be able to build any electric motors because earths are required to build the magnets that are required to build electric motors that build electric vehicles. And if we don’t have the earths, you’re not building those motors and you’ve just ended the EV revolution. The rare earths are critical that we get them to secure the supply chain. And as you know the geopolitical situation is not lessening.”
The Mines Minister pointed to war in Ukraine. “The fact that the Rus-
Cont’d from pg. 20 sians just destroyed that dam - everybody here’s got to be stunned at that - but there’s a lesson there. These geopolitical critical minerals industry strategies are all associated about securing that supply chain. That’s about securing the metals that come from Northern Ontario and marrying them with the manufacturing might in Southern Ontario. It’s absolutely essential we secure this supply chain.” So what is Ontario doing to meet the demand and ensure Canada is a world leader in the production of electric vehicles?
“Bill 71, Côté Lake was the example that I used because it took 15 or 17 years to permit that mine, said Pirie. “That’s unacceptable. Bill 71 makes this ministry, my ministry, more efficient and more effective. There’s two very important points in that bill. Number one, every word in the old bill and the new bill is unchanged. In two respects, the duty to consult and protecting and maintaining Ontario’s environmental regulations. We’ve got the world’s best. And why? Because everybody in this room understands how important it is, how important the duty to consult is, as well as in maintaining environmental regulations.”
Pirie points to the IAMGOLD Côté Lake Mine. “They don’t even discharge water. $2 billion project -1600 people employed, they don’t even discharge water. With phenomenal indigenous relations, they prosper.”
Pirie turned his focus on the demand for clean energy.
“You can’t do mining without energy. And if you look at the energy profile, how much energy is going to be required, you know we need more energy. Monday morning I was at a conference in Toronto with Minister Todd Smith of Energy, and that was a conference with United Arab Emirates. And they were talking about critical minerals and energy. And as you know, Ontario is

With them, you could power green houses so that you’ve got your food security for those communities. There’s another source of energy that’s untapped in the north. Hudson’s Bay and James Bay has the best wind profile in North America. It’s all untapped right now.”
Pirie concluded his remarks with a promise that the Ford government is committed to making Ontario Canada’s #1 mining jurisdiction and one of the best in the world. “We’re already the number one jurisdiction for exploration. So we’re setting the table for the development with our Critical Minerals Strategy, with our Bill 71 and also the Red Tape Bill that allows us to do our businessat the pace of business. We’ve got more work to do on the Exploration Fund. As I said, when we developed this bill, we had round tables. We had all the leading industry and indigenous people that we got their input from. And we’re doing the same thing on the exploration side of the fence.”

George Pirie doesn’t mince words when it comes to northern Ontario’s premiere mining shows’ impact on the Canadian economy. Ontario’s Mines Minister is signalling to investment bankers from around the world that they need to get a firsthand look at northern Ontario exploration and mining projects by attending the north’s two big annual mining events in Thunder Bay and Timmins.
In fact, he told Canadian Trade-Ex President Glenn Dredhart that he is making it his personal mission to get those bankers north.
“It is the 30th anniversary of this event and it wouldn’t happen without Glenn Dredhart. We can’t say thanks enough to him and his family,” said Pirie.
“Glenn has heard me say this a couple times. I was running some major corporations. We would bring the investment bankers in, charter them in, whether it be Timmins or whether it be Red Lake.”
Pirie, who was President and CEO of Placer Dome Canada, which operated 13 mines in 7 countries, is adamant that bankers need a firsthand look at the north.

“I’ve been listening to presentations over the last two days,” Pirie said in Timmins. “We’ve heard all of the major projects in the Timmins area and some in Sudbury at the same time. You bring the investment bankers here and you then hear their presentations,” he added.
Pirie says bankers could be on the ground talking to the operators and the investment would flow because every president, CEO, and every manager of any mining corporation must mobilize capital.
Ontario’s Mines Minister concluded his thoughts with a promise. “Glenn it’s going to be one of my missions that we attract the investment bankers into this forum because then we’ve got everything that it needs, including the capital to build the projects.”

Red Lake Operations community engagement remains centered around strengthening community connections and includes enhancing the capabilities of local fire and rescue authorities to manage emergencies. In 2022, Deloitte, an international consulting firm acting as an independent facilitator, conducted a Stakeholder Perception Survey for Evolution Mining, including all of its mining operations. Results were a ‘High Approval’ rating of 4.0 out of 5.0 compared to Deloitte’s finding on a global mean score of 3.39 in over 2,000 cases of social license reviewed.
In July 2021, Evolution Mining committed to reducing carbon emissions by 30% (by 2030) and made a commitment to be Net Zero by 2050 in line with the Paris Agreement. This commitment recognises that climate change is one of the most pressing problems facing all of us and that Evolution takes seriously its role in emissions reduction. Evolution’s plan to manage emissions reduction now and in the future points to
it’s leadership in supporting a sustainable planet and the wellbeing of its team and communities too.
All Evolution operations, including Red Lake, are transparent about their progress regarding emissions reduction but it is recognised it is a start to a longer journey. Part of this is how Evolution safely manages its approach to any impacts, or potential impacts, of extreme climate-related risks. Evolution operations are situated across a range of extreme climatic zones, which globally can present acute and chronic physical hazards, including extreme weather events such as natural disasters, resource shortages, changes in the patterns and intensity of rainfall and storms, water shortages, and changing temperatures.
Evolution’s 2022 Sustainability Report outlined its pathway to Net Zero with a focus on renewables in the short term, looking at technology options in the medium term. Equinox Gold is a growth-focused gold producer operating entirely in the Americas, with seven operating mines in the USA, Mexico and Brazil. As part of its vision to be a million-ounce gold producer, in April 2021 Equinox Gold bought a 60% interest in the Greenstone Mine in Ontario, Canada, with the remaining 40% held by Orion Mine Finance Group. Greenstone Mine will be one of the largest open-pit gold mines in Canada and will be Equinox Gold’s flagship asset when it commences production in 2024. Construction of the Greenstone Mine continues on schedule. Overall project progress, which includes engineering, procurement and construction, was 82% complete at the end of June 2023 and on track to achieve production in the first half of 2024. Greenstone Mine has reached the significant milestone of 4 million hours lost-time injury free and was awarded the 2022 Equinox Gold COO Safety Award, thanks to the Greenstone Mine workforce’s
dedication to safety in the workplace. The mechanical, piping, electrical and instrumentation teams ramped up during Q2 2023 for final construction installations in the Power Plant and Process Plant. Over the next few months, the electrical team will pull and terminate kilometres of cable throughout site. The piping team will connect pipe required for fire suppression, glycol heating, compressed air and processing. The mechanical team will install grinding and screening equipment. The instrumentation team will install and program the various

technologies used throughout the Plant Site.
The commissioning team has also started arriving at site to set up the processes needed to manage commissioning activities. Pre-commissioning activities are underway at the Power Plant, and commissioning activities for the Process Plant will get underway this fall. A milestone was reached with turnover of the Truck Shop to the Operations maintenance team, who are now using the facility for mine equipment maintenance.
Offsite infrastructure work continues with the start of earthworks at the new location for the Hydro One Geraldton Operating Centre and completion of decommissioning of the former MTO Patrol Yard. Highway 11 realignment paving work is underway ahead of plan, with turnover to the MTO expected during Q3 2023.
Mine pre-production activities continue to meet the planned tonnage, with 9.7 million tonnes mined to date. Haul roads are being constructed across the mine site, while operational readiness activities for the process plant and mine are underway. The Effluent Water Treatment Plant is operating as designed and has treated and discharged just over 670,000 m³ of water in Q2 2023 and 1.38 million m³ to date this year.
Greenstone is located on the traditional territories of four First Nations – the Animbiigoo Zaagi’igan Anishinaabek (AZA), the Aroland First Nation (AFN), the Ginoogaming First Nation (GFN) and the Long Lake #58 First Nation (LL58) – and is home to the citizens of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO).
Greenstone Mine will produce approximately 400,000 ounces of gold per year for the first five years and more than 5 million ounces of gold in total over an initial 14-year mine life, with expansion and mine-life extension potential from both underground and near-mine open-pit deposits.
Greenstone Mine reached the 200 operations employees milestone during Q2 2023. At its peak, Greenstone Mine will employ more than 500 direct workers. It has been more than two decades since Placer Dome Canada negotiated a revenue-sharing agreement at the Musselwhite Gold Mine with nearby First Nations.
The man at the center of that agreement, Placer Dome’s President George Pirie, is Ontario’s Mines Minister today.
Minister Pirie, who also served as mayor of Timmins before being elected to the Ontario legislature, has a long history of working with First Nations communities and organizations.
Speaking at the Canadian Mining Expo in Timmins this summer, Pirie underlined the Ford government’s commitment to First Nations prosperity.
“At present, the province has eight agreements that span 41 communities across the north. Last week I was just at a conference in Cochrane with the Mushkegowuk Tribal Council. The last presentation, before I spoke, was the auditor. He was very pleased to announce a surplus. He said it’s the result of the revenue sharing agreements. The revenue sharing agreements is an enlightened piece of legislation. The revenues that would normally come to the province from the mining sector, and now it’s been expanded for forestry sector and the aggregate industry.”
Resource-sector revenue-sharing agreements allow 40 to 45 percent of provincial royalties to flow back into the communities themselves.
“This is a very important point because those payments enrich the communities directly,” said Pirie. Those funds would have gener-
ally gone into the general revenues associated with the running of the province.
“My ministry is responsible for administering that process. In fact, I just renewed the agreement for one year. It will be renewed a year from now. It will be expanded. And we probably will renew it again for another five-year period of time.”
Pirie says those are the type of partnerships the Ford government is interested in because it takes the money and puts the funds directly back into the communities.
“They benefit from the activities associated with the resources in their traditional territory. There’s no bureaucracy associated with that. The funds travel directly to the communities. They’re very similar to the revenue sharing agreements that we had developed when I worked with Placer Dome at Musselwhite. We developed those agreements in the 90s.”
Placer Dome changed the traditional MoU agreement to a revenue sharing agreement. “And I know communities like Kingfisher Lake, and this comes directly from MPP Sol Mamakwa, over $800,000 this year alone has come from Musselwhite. Those are funds that transform communities. They enrich the communities.’
Pirie also points to his time serving with Wahgoshig Resources. “At the time we left there, Wahgoshig First Nations, we had a surplus of $23 million. And what did they do with that? They built homes. The communities benefit directly.”
“Imagine how empowering that was and is. You don’t have to go back out to the federal government and
get funds to upgrade your housing stock. And I’ll tell you, I haven’t been there for about probably seven years, but the houses that they were building were beautiful. And quite frankly, that’s a beautiful community. It’s that type of empowerment that these type of arrangements make, and give to the indigenous communities, and the First Nations communities. I endorse them a thousand percent.”
Another thing that happens when funds go back into First Nations communities is they start their own businesses. With Wahgoshig, it was a diamond-drilling corporation. They started off with one drill, I think they’re up to three drills right now - 100% owned.
Pirie spoke about a recent conversation he had with Chief Bruce Archibald of Taykwa Tagamou FN. “Before endorsing the development of their lands, the unemployment rate was 85%. Now it’s less than the national average. So, what happens? The communities and the people prosper as a result,” said Pirie.
In the northwest, Pirie has met with several chiefs that are in charge of the environmental assessment process associated with building the roads to the Ring of Fire will tell you they’re doing it to see their communities prosper.
“They want to see their children stay in the community. They want to see them finish their education in their community and they want to see their communities grow. And that’s what happens with partnerships. The communities thrive. They become healthy. They become vibrant. And that’s the exercise. And that’s the purpose of all of these revenue sharing agreements and partnerships. It’s to empower the First Nations people to do what they want to do with their money to develop their communities and to develop their people.”

In mid-June, investors, management, and employees at Argonaut Gold has the adult version as they got to enjoy their first gold pour at their flagship Magino Mine in Dubreuilleville, the first Canadian output from its estimated 5.6 million ounces of proven and probable reserves globally.
“We are proud of the Argonaut team for delivering Canada’s newest gold mine,” said Richard Young, President and Chief Executive Officer.
Full-scale production is expected
any day at Magino, which is Argonaut’s first Canadian operation. The company expects to employ 350 full-time workers once production is in full swing. Based on known reserves, the Magino is expected to last 19 years. “The Magino mine is key to achieving our vision to become a low-cost, mid-tier North America gold producer that creates significant value for all our stakeholders and proudly demonstrates responsible mining. We thank all our employees, contractors, and community partners for their hard work and dedication that has led us to this exciting project milestone,” said Young. With the first gold pour milestone behind them, the company turned
its attention to completing commissioning and ramping up the mill to a steady state.
“In addition, we are looking to further grow our flagship gold mine as we commence a reserve development drilling program intending to increase reserves in combination with studies to expand and optimize mill throughput, both scheduled to begin later this summer,” added Marc Leduc, Chief Operating Officer, in the company’s June news release.
Magino is expected to produce between 72,000 and 81,000 ounces of gold in 2023 at cash costs of between $850 and $950 per ounce and approximately 148,000 ounces

Kinross bought the highly-touted Red Lake gold mine in 2022 and has since launched an aggressive exploration campaign to broaden the resource. In a recent interview with Bloor Street Capital, CFO Andrea Freeborough outlined the big picture. “Just one year from closing the acquisition, we did put out the initial resource, which was over 5 million ounces in total, including 2.7 million of indicated and 2.3 mil-
lion in the inferred category.”
However, production isn’t booked for another 6 years. “Working backwards, we’ve talked about production in 2029 and we get questioned a lot about whether we can shorten that timeline. That’s the permitting timeline that we’ve allowed for – it’s realistic. Not overly conservative.”
Freeborough says the permitting is based on similar projects or what others are anticipating. What we will do is make sure that we’ve got all of our information ready ahead of time, as early as possible.
We’re developing good working relationships with First Nations to make sure that we have a good understanding of their needs. And I would say that if we do happen to get the permits ahead of the timeline that we have in the schedule, then we’d be ready to start construction early, but we just can’t count on that at this point.”
Freeborough says it’s important to note that the resource is largely within the first 500 meters of drilling. “We have drilled beyond that to up to and beyond one kilometer and we continue to see high grade mineralization. And so, we expect that to continue to add to the resource down the road,” she added.

A substantial amount of drilling, 560km to be exact, was conducted in 2022 and Kinross is in the middle of a big drilling campaign this year as well.

Avalon intends to deploy Metso’s world-leading technology to construct and operationalize a fullservice lithium processing facility at the company’s recently acquired Thunder Bay industrial site. Upon completion of the project, Avalon will be the first vertically integrated lithium producer in Ontario, while ensuring Canada’s EV battery manufacturing base has a stable, proximate and long-term supply of this strategically vital resource.
“Metso’s platform and technological solutions perfectly complement Avalon’s vision to complete an integrated lithium value chain in Ontario, predicated on innovative process solutions,” said Zeeshan Syed, President of Avalon.

The Non-Binding Memorandum of Understanding stipulates:
• The pursuit of a definitive agreement to establish a lithium hydroxide processing facility in Thunder Bay, Ont.
• Avalon to license Metso technology and solutions to produce lithium hydroxide cathode materials to serve the EV market.
• Allow Metso to conduct testing and engineering work across Avalon’s portfolio of critical-mineral projects, including the Company’s flagship deposit at Separation Rapids near Kenora, ON.
• The parties anticipate reaching a definitive agreement on or before Sept. 1, 2023.
Metso’s sustainable next-generation production and processing technologies are being deployed internationally by governments and clean-energy producers in order to address and deliver the necessary supply required by the emerging EV battery industry. Avalon’s strategic partnership with Metso is a first in Canada, and is a significant step towards helping the Company execute on its vertically-integrated business strategy-and in turn, entrench Ontario’s position as an advanced manufacturing hub serving not only North America, but the world.

The partnership complements Avalon’s strategic business objectives, while also providing direct support to the federal government’s Critical Minerals Strategy to increase the supply of responsibly sourced critical minerals and develop domestic supply chains for the green and digital economy, as announced by Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, as well as Francois-Phillippe Champagne, the federal Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development.
The planned Thunder Bay processing facility and upstream lithium project in the Kenora region will create an estimated 500 jobs. It will also enable broader development of northwestern Ontario’s regional lithium assets by other producers seeking to utilize the proximity of Avalon’s processing capacity. The facility will also help foster new economic development opportunities for local and regional First Nations communities.

The company expects to submit a final EA to the Ontario government next Spring with an eye on 2025 being a watershed year.
Springpole is regarded as one of the largest undeveloped open pit gold deposits in the country. First Mining acquired the project in 2016 and they’ve been in the environmental assessment process since 2018.
Which is important because again, the work that we have done really positions Springpole pretty. “And it’s really expensive and it’s really complicated,” said CEO Dan Wilton in a recent promotional video.
“Springpole is located in a great jurisdiction,” said Wilton. “It’s about 100 kilometers east of Red Lake close to the Manitoba border. There are forestry roads that go on to our mineral tenure, about 18 kilometers from the project. There are power lines, about 30 kilometers away, and then a bigger, almost brand new 230kv line. I think it’s a great deal. It represents a really good opportunity to drive infrastructure into a region of Northwestern Ontario that can open up a lot of other op-
It’s 4.6 million ounces of measured and indicated gold. It’s another 24 million ounces M&I resource of silver. And the silver recovers in this project, so it’s a helpful by-product,” he added.
The company is planning a large open pit with an average grade about one gram gold and five grams silver for an 11 year of mine life –capable of producing in excess of 300,000 ounces a year.
“This is big enough to be meaningful to the biggest mining companies in the world. And in terms of development process, we had a prefeasibility study done early in 2021, which showed net present value of, at $1,600 gold price, just shy of a billion dollars US on 718 million US of capital cost,” said Wilton.
Since 2021, the company has been moving the project through the feasibility study process and they are 90% complete.
“Including, understanding feasibility level, metallurgical variability testing, hydrogeology, hydrology, waste rock characterization, geochemistry, tailings dam structures and tailings deposition strategy, the mine plant and the process flow
Wilton says the other real driver on timeframe is the environmental assessment process. “At Springpole, we submitted and published a draft environmental assessment about a year ago. So that just lays it out in a comprehensive fashion, 10,000 pages, all the baseline studies and work that we’ve been doing at this project really since 2010, the summary of those and then the game plan is to be able to build the mine with no long-term adverse impacts to the environment.”
One of the things about Springpole, the deposit sits under the Bay of the Lake. “And so the development plan involves building less than a kilometer of dikes, dewatering the lake and having an open pit mining project. That for a lot of people has taken a lot of getting their heads around. It’s been done a number of times before in Canada. What we are facing from a technical perspective is a lot less challenging than a lot of the mines in the Northwest Territories, for example.”
Wilton says there’s nothing at Springpole that’s a fatal flaw of the project. “We’re excited really starting to write up that final EA to submit that about a year from now. And ultimately, targeting that approval in 2025.”
When it comes to gold in northwestern Ontario, Red Lake tends to get all the attention. A small Australian company thinks the nearby Pickle Lake region is the forgotten cousin and they are out to prove their theory.
The Pickle Lake Gold Project is 100% owned by Ardiden Limited and consists of four major gold deposits covering an area of 100km x 30km, offering significant upside exploration potential and resourcegrowth opportunities along 120km of prospective strike-length.
The four advanced Gold Deposits located within the Pickle Lake Gold Project are called Kasagiminnis, Dobie, Dorothy, and Esker.
Rob Longley, Ardiden’s CEO and Managing Director has told investment conference interviewers that Canada has similar properties to Australia, which makes it a great place to look for gold. “The investment fraternity, the knowledge, the skill base is all very compatible and interchangeable. It’s about the investment market and the jurisdiction of the geology.”
Red Lake has produced more than 27 million ounces of gold. Historically, the Pickle Lake region has produced more than 3Moz gold since 1935 from four underground operations: Pickle Crow, Dona Lake, Central Patricia and Golden
Pickle Lake is a small town on the eastern shore of the Lake with a population of about 500. It has year-round road access and was founded as a transportation centre for mining activities after gold was discovered in the area in 1928. Ardiden has a maiden high-grade resource of 790,000 tonnes @ 4.3 g/t for 110,000oz gold for the Kasagiminnis Deposit and at a premium grade of 4.3 g/t gold, the Maiden Inferred Resource marks the first step towards the Company’s objective of building a significant high-grade resource base at Pickle Lake and in May 2020 defined an exploration target of 500,000oz to 1.2Moz @ 3.9 – 6.6g/t Au. Resource definition drilling completed a 3,000m ‘Summer’ program at Kas in 2020 with the objective of building on the current JORC estimate by defining additional gold mineralisation along strike and at depth.
Drilling at the Western Hub so far has completed 43 holes for 5,939m of fully oriented diamond core to a maximum depth of 252m, comprising:
1. Esker Prospect – 18 holes for 2,206m
2. Tonsil Prospect – 19 holes for 2,680m
3. Dorothy Prospect – 3 holes for 655m
4. Dobie Prospect – 3 holes for 398m
Ardiden’s drilling in the Western Hub is targeting the Golden Patricia geological sequence both to the north-west and to the south-east of the historical underground mine. The mine was developed to 750m vertical depth over a 3km strike length and extracted 619,796oz Au @ 15.2g/t and ceased operations in 1997 due to poor gold prices. The Kasagiminnis, Esker, Dorothy, Dobie and Tonsil Gold Deposit are just a few of multiple deposit-scale targets and advanced gold Prospects within Ardiden’s 120km of under-explored strike.
Ardiden has also identified 23 Gold Deposit and Prospect areas that will be systematically explored with 20 currently fully permitted for early-stage exploration activities.
“We’re in the same Greenstone belt that hosts Red Lake’s deposits. Red Lake has several gold mines in there, and there’s some new ones coming on stream.
Red Lake has produced about 30 million ounces. Pickle Lake itself has only produced 3 million ounces. We think, as some of our key investors do, that is sort of a forgotten jurisdiction just on the side of Red Lake that offers a lot of opportunity.

Consensus is still off in the distance, but efforts continue by Ontario’s Mines Minister to get the contentious Ring of Fire mining region into production.
Companies like Wyloo’s Ring of Fire Metals and other players continue to advance their plans which have the potential to transform the economies of northwestern and parts of northeastern Ontario into the western hemisphere’s dominant contributor to the green economy.
“There’s always a lot more work to do,” Mines Minister George Pirie told an audience at the Canadian Mining Expo in June in Timmins. “We’ve got the policies in place, like the Critical Minerals Strategy. I’m responsible as the minister, to ensure that the Ring of Fire gets developed. And the Ring of Fire is a generational opportunity - not only Canada, but for the globe.”
There are two main players, Ring of Fire Metals and Juno. Ring of Fire Metals has a known resource, Eagle’s Nest, with a very rich nickel deposit.
“The other company is Juno. It’s a host of rare earths and base metals and precious metals in that same region. The EA process is being led by the chiefs, by the communities of Webequie and Marten Falls,” said Pirie.
“And they’re running the duty consult for all the communities, and that’s the way it should be. We have a generational opportunity.”
Pirie reminded the audience that the region is also host to massive chromite deposits. Chromite is a crystal-
line mineral composed primarily of iron-oxide and chromium-oxide compounds. Chromite is used to harden steel, to manufacture stainless steel and to form alloys. It is used in plating to produce a hard, beautiful surface and to prevent corrosion. It can also be used to give glass an emerald, green colour.
“We used to talk about chromite quite a bit. I’m here to remind you, don’t forget about chromite. The number one jurisdiction right now for chromite is South Africa. South Africa has an alliance with Russia and China. That alliance is very fragile from a Western perspective. And who’s got the world’s largest undeveloped chromite deposits? It’s the chromite deposits in the Ring of Fire.”

280km north of Nakina, Ontario, which contains the Big Daddy chromite deposit, named the “Big Daddy Project”. The Corporation has a 30% interest in the Big Daddy Project.
CCC is now the Operator of the Black Horse Joint Venture after it had acquired a vested 50% interest through Bold Ventures Inc. which is carried for 10% (20% of CCC’s equity in the JV) by CCC funding all exploration expenditures. The Corporation had the right to acquire: (i) up to an 80% interest in respect of chromite contained in the Koper Lake Project; and (ii) up to a 20% working interest in respect of the nonchromite minerals contained in the Koper Lake Project.
On September 1, 2022, CCC closed a transaction with Fancamp Exploration Ltd. whereby CCC purchased all of Fancamp’s interest in the Koper Lake claims which consist of 4 “legacy” mining claims. Fancamp retains a 2% Net Smelter Return Royalty. Under the pre-existing KWG-Bold Ventures Inc. Joint Venture agreement, and the Bold-Fancamp Option Agreement, Bold retains a 10% carried interest in chromite and a 40% working interest in all other metals found within the claims. Bold also possesses a Right of First Refusal on a 1% NSR covering all met-
als found within the claim group.
“The chromite deposits, I think that Timmins has a strong possibility to secure the smelting capacity here in Timmins. We have what the world wants today.
From a critical mineral supply - we know how to mine correctly in a sustainable fashion. And we do it and we’re committed to it. And we’ve got the people and the technology and the desire to make sure it happens here in Northern Ontario on the back of conferences like this,” added Pirie.
The Minister told the mining audience that everyone in the industry should be proud and excited to be involved in the mining industry.
“We do not take a back seat to anybody globally. Everybody’s going to be proud of the fact that they’re living here in Northern Ontario and involved in this industry. You’ve heard me say this in different presentations in Sudbury, and I’ll say it again right now in Timmins. This is our time. This is a generational opportunity. Because we know what we’re doing, and we know how to get it done.”
Pirie repeated a line he is often using these days –that northern Ontario’s mining industry is turning its attention to mining the fuels of tomorrow, today.
“Remember this one thing. This is our time,” the Minister of Mines said as he concluded his presentation.
As work continues to see if the Eagle will land, the Eagle’s parent company has set up shop in Thunder Bay at 1127 Premier Way, the new home of Ring of Fire Metals.
“It was a wonderful event to mark the opening of our new office space. We’re so thankful you joined us –local community members, government, contractors, family and friends and, of course, our team members from all three sites,” stated the company on social media posts.
The company hosted Marten Falls Chief Bruce Achneepineskum, Webequie Chief Cornelius Wabasse and MPP Kevin Holland ahead of the ribbon cutting. Thunder Bay Mayor Ken Boshcoff also stopped by to present the company with a certificate in recognition of our new office opening.

In the interim, a new leadership team including new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Kristan Straub, and Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Annie Sismanian, has been appointed at Ring of Fire Metals, bringing with them decades of mining industry experience at a critical time in the company’s history.
The new appointments follow the recruitment of Stephen Crozier, Vice President Sustainability in August last year and long-standing employee Glenn Nolan’s transition to the newly created role of Vice President Indigenous Enterprises. Ryan Weston continues as part of the leadership team in the role of Vice President Exploration.
Former Acting CEO, Stephen Flewelling, will continue at the company in an advisory capacity while former CFO, Greg Rieveley, moves on to pursue other opportunities.

By Kevin VincentOntario’s largest claimholder has the green light to start drilling in the Ring of Fire. Uniquely endowed, with many of the world’s critical minerals, the Ring of Fire is one of the last remaining large, under-explored, multi-commodity geological structures in the world.
On June 30th the Ontario Ministry of the Environment issued the proposed early exploration permit to the privately-held company. The company’s mining activities are approximately 550 kilometres North of Thunder Bay.
The permit will allow the company to conduct traditional mechanized drilling.
The exploration permit was issued once all Indigenous communities and the public had the opportunity to provide comment or raise their concerns.
In January 2020, Juno applied to the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines for two drilling permits. Both targets were approximately 250 kilometres west of Attawapiskat and the community objected. They took the company to court and eventually lost the case to prevent the drilling.
The Exploration Permit duration will be up to 3 years with the possibility of renewal.
Juno believes the claims have significant potential to host additional deposits, as well as deposits of vanadium-titanium, gold, diamonds and rare earths.
Entering 2023, Juno had approximately CAD$9 million in its treasury.
Over the past several years, Juno accumulated vast mineral land holdings in the Ring of Fire by acquisitions from junior mining companies and staking crown land. It is the largest mineral claimholder in the Ring of Fire with approximately 16,500 mineral claims covering 3,200 square kilometers, or approximately 62% of the mineral claims in the region.

In announcing the land package, the company said: “This is an opportunistic acquisition that leverages the company’s extensive exploration database in the region and is consistent with the company’s broader critical mineral exploration strategy focused on underexplored and prospective regions of Canada.”
“This staking is a result of leveraging Canterra’s extensive critical mineral databases that it possesses for Newfoundland and Ontario,” said CEO Christopher Pennimpede.

These datasets also identify other prospective targets in the region, some of which remain available for acquisition, that may be acquired in the future.
Delta Resources Limited kicked off the summer exploration season by announcing the expansion of its Delta-1 property in Thunder Bay and a message from the company’s president to investors that drill results may come as a Christmas present this year.
The company has doubled its land position and acquired exclusive rights to four additional mineral exploration properties, totaling approximately 4,716 hectares. These properties are contiguous to the Delta-1 property package and extend the land position on strike with the Eureka gold deposit by over 4.5 kilometers.
“So far since the end of April, until now we’ve drilled 15 drill holes for just under 5,000 meters,” said President Andre Tessier in a summer video message to investors. “Right now, the delay between the time the core comes out of the ground and is fully assayed is anywhere between six weeks and eight weeks. So please be patient. We’re going to come up with some assay results shortly and hopefully you’ll be satisfied with them as we are.” Delta has $10 million in its treasury. The company did a bought deal financing of the 17th of May with Cormark Securities and Desjardins and Hayward. “We have money in the treasury to be drilling these holes. We have an extensive play. We’re going to be drilling to expand the deposit on strike at depth everywhere. And we’re also drilling to gather some geological information
that helps us better locate the rest of the deposit, understand it better, and come up with additional targets at the property scale.” One of the newly acquired properties is a 59-hectare piece of patented ground, including surface and mining rights, located next to the Delta-1 property and on strike to the Eureka deposit. Delta conducted due diligence and discovered grab samples returning up to 10.0 grams per tonne of gold. The company has entered into a five-year lease agreement with the landowner, granting Delta exclusive exploration rights. During this period, Delta has the option to purchase 100% interest in both surface and mining rights by paying market value times ten. For the lease, Delta has made a one-time cash payment of $90,000. If Delta chooses to buy the property during the lease, the landowners will retain a 2% net smelter returns (NSR) royalty, with Delta having the option to buy back 1% for $1,000,000 and the remaining 1% for $4,000,000. No work commitments or shares of the company were issued.
The second exploration property consists of 23 claims covering approximately 2,348.5 hectares, located immediately south of Delta-1. Delta acquired a 100% interest in this property by making a onetime cash payment of $50,000.
The vendor retains a 2% NSR, which Delta can buy back 0.5% for $1,000,000 and an additional 0.5% for $1,000,000, with the remaining 1% available for $4,000,000. No
work commitments or shares of the company were issued.
The third exploration property consists of 97 claims covering 2,056.4 hectares, located south of Delta-1. Delta paid $50,000 upon signing and will make an additional $50,000 payment on each of the first, second, third, and fourth anniversaries, totaling $250,000. The vendor retains a 2% NSR, which Delta can buy back 1% for $1,000,000 and the remaining 1% for $4,000,000. No work commitments or shares of the company were issued. The fourth exploration property comprises 12 claims covering approximately 252 hectares, contiguous and south of the Delta-1 property. Delta acquired 100% interest in this property by making a onetime cash payment of $45,000. The vendors retain a 2.0% NSR royalty, which Delta can buy back 1.0% for $1,000,000 and retain a first right of refusal for the remaining NSR (up to $4,000,000). No work commitments or shares of the company were issued.
With these acquisitions, Delta now controls an area of approximately 107 square kilometers within the Shebandowan Structural Zone of the Shebandowan Greenstone Belt. The Delta-1 property, located in the Shebandowan Greenstone Belt, now covers a 20-kilometer strike extent of the Shebandowan Structural Zone, which is also home to the 6 million-ounce Moss Lake gold deposit situated approximately 50 kilometers to the west.
Alamos Gold continues to report solid results from underground exploration drilling at its Island Gold project located near Dubreuilville, further extending the high grade gold mineralization across the deposit.
In mid June, the company published new results including ‘multiple significant high-grade intercepts within several recently defined hanging wall and footwall structures in proximity to existing underground infrastructure’ according to a release.
Highlights include 146.33 g/t of gold (37.19 g/t cut) over 2.20m, and 38.92 g/t of gold (38.92 g/t cut) over 2.10m at Island West.
Alamos says a total of $14 million has been budgeted for exploration at Island Gold in 2023, and that for the past several years, the exploration focus has been on adding high-grade mineral resources at depth in advance of the Phase 3+ Expansion study, primarily through surface directional drilling.
‘This exploration strategy has been successful in tripling the Mineral Reserve and Resource base since 2017. With a 17-year mine life, and with work on the expansion ramping up, the focus has shifted to a more cost-effective expanded underground exploration drilling program that will leverage existing underground infrastructure,’ says the report.
‘This drilling is much lower cost on a per metre basis, is less technically challenging, and requires significantly fewer metres per exploration target.’
Of interest is the Island West area. The company said underground drilling from the 580-level and the 790-level exploration drifts continue to extend high-grade gold mineralization along strike to the west of Mineral Reserves and Resources in the middle portion of Island West (between vertical depths of 700 m and 1,100 m).
Island West’s Hanging Wall Zones also produced results showing ‘high-grade
gold mineralization intersected within sub-parallel zones in the hanging wall, and within a newly defined perpendicular structure’ which the company says represent a ‘significant opportunity’ to add near mine mineral reserves and resources.
“Our continued exploration success within recently defined sub-parallel structures demonstrate the significant opportunities to add highgrade ounces near our existing mining horizons,” said President and CEO John A. McCluskey.
“This includes the newly defined NS1-Zone in the hanging wall which we are currently developing and mining beyond existing Mineral Reserves and Resources and outside of our 2023 mine plan. We are also continuing to extend high-grade mineralization across the main Island Gold zone to the east and west as part of our successful transition from surface exploration drilling to more cost-effective underground drilling where we leverage our existing development.”
“We expect this ongoing success in both the main zone and subparallel structures to drive further growth in high-grade near-mine Mineral Reserves and Resources. Given their proximity to our existing underground infrastructure, these ounces will be low-cost to develop and produce, highlighting the significant ongoing upside to Phase 3+ Expansion study outlined in 2022,” added McCluskey.
Alamos also said that the mill expansion, paste plant, and power upgrades are on track for completion in the first quarter of 2026.
A regional exploration program including a total of 7,500 m of drilling is also underway. The focus will be on evaluating and advancing exploration targets outside the Island Gold Deposit on the newly expanded 55,300-hectare Island Gold property.
Additionally, the company says footwall zones in Island East further highlight the potential to add high-grade Mineral Reserves and Resources in proximity of existing production horizons and infrastructure. It ‘could be incorporated into the mine plan and mined within the next several years.’ Alamos said these potential high-grade mineral reserves and resource additions would be low cost to develop, further increasing the value of the operation.

Treasury has a 330 square kilometre land package that is relatively underexplored with significant potential for resource growth.

Senior management at Treasury Metals are excited about the future thanks, in large part, to a recent Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) that they released a couple of months ago.
“I’m very pleased with the results from our PFS, which shows a 336 million NPV discounted at 5% and a 25.4% IRR. It is a 13-year mine life with total recovered ounces around 1.2 million,” President and CEO Jeremy Wyeth told an investors webinar in the Spring of this year.
The company expects to produce more than 100,000 ounces per year for the first nine years. Wyeth cautioned that the metrics in the PFS are improvements over the company’s earlier released PEA – in a PFS companies are not allowed to include inferred ounces.
“We were successful in growing the answers into our initial reserve from our PEA mine plan. Initial capital is approximately $335 million. This is still a bite-size project that doesn’t require huge amounts of capital, and we have a very healthy payback of 2.8 years on an after-tax basis,” added Wyeth.
Treasury views the Goliath as a technically simple project that won’t require a lot of non-traditional technology.
“And has a lot of potential for growth,” said Wyeth. “Both in terms of mine plan expansion and extension. This is also a project that has a good leverage to higher gold prices.”
Overall, and based on today’s numbers, Treasury expects the mine to generate more than $1.3 Billion in revenue using $1950 USD/ounce.

The Goliath Gold Project received Federal Environmental Assessment Approval in 2019 with the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada concluding that the Goliath Gold Project was unlikely to result in significant adverse effects to the environment. Treasury Metals has commenced the process of receiving additional permits and approvals to construct and operate the Goliath Gold Project (Mine + Mill).
The Goliath Gold Complex currently refers to a prospective 65-km trend in a 330 km2 land package comprised of three distinct projects located within the WabigoonGreenstone belt in the DrydenSioux Lookout Area of northwestern Ontario.
Treasury Metals Inc.’s land package lies adjacent to the Trans-Canada highway and is located midway between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg. The closest city is the City of Dryden, a drive of 15 km to the west. The community of Wabigoon is five km to the south of the Project.
Canadian Critical Minerals Inc. announced in July that exploration drilling has begun at the Thierry Mine Project near Pickle Lake as it tries to breathe new life into the old producer.

The property is approximately 4,700 hectares in size and contains a NI 43-101 mineral resource. There is a municipal airport, nearby rail system and provincial power grid within eight km of the mine. The underground infrastructure includes a three-compartment shaft, production decline to 520 metres below surface and lateral developments on three levels.

The current Inferred Resource at K1-1 does not include results from a 7,218-foot drilling program completed by Cadillac Ventures Inc. in the summer of 2012. Eight diamond drill holes were completed outside of the optimized Whittle shell and each hole intersected mineralization with assayed grades comparable to, or better than, those in the current Inferred Resource. Results of this program are included below and can be viewed on SEDAR (see press release by Cadillac Ventures Inc. of September 13, 2012).

By virtue of its name, International Lithium is scouring the globe for critical minerals, but it’s recent drill results in northwestern Ontario that have the company’s undivided attention.
“We’ve got projects in Canada and in Ireland, and we’re also looking quite strategically at Zimbabwe as a country. The main one is Raleigh Lake, (near Ignace) said John Wisbey, Chairman and CEO in a recent investors interview.
The company delivered a maiden mineral resource estimate for Raleigh Lake earlier this year. “That’s great because while I love telling people that we’ve got a good project, it’s going to be so fantastic. It’s so much better to be able to say we’ve actually published some numbers and we’ll get better and better because we’re heading for the next stage later this year and we can hopefully put some economics around those numbers as well.”
Over 18 months the company completed 14,000 meters of
drilling which allowed International Lithium to come to deliver the maiden resource estimate.
“Basically, you could drill one hole, you might find lithium, but if you drill another whole 50 meters away, you might not. And the nice thing about this project is that we found an area where, if you did drill 50 meters away, you’d find pegmatite and there was lithium in it, and the same thing, another 50 meters away.”
Wisbey says the company ended up with rubidium. “The market is about 20 times that of lithium. And we were able to have a separate resource estimate for the rubidium as well as for the lithium. And that was very pleasing.”
In the interim, the company spun off another northwestern Ontario project near Ignace, Mavis Lake, to Critical Resources. “We wish them every success in progressing to the next level. Our sale has been a good win/win. Critical Resources are achieving good results there, while ILC has been able to focus on Raleigh Lake where
we have also achieved good results with our own 43-101 compliant Maiden Resource estimates for lithium and rubidium announced on March 1, 2023.”
Raleigh Lake is near excellent infrastructure and is about an hour’s drive towards Thunder Bay and Lake Superior from Mavis Lake down the Trans-Canada highway. Raleigh Lake is massive at 48,500 hectares. “But meanwhile, we have a resource estimate which is the absolute minimum even if we find nothing else which is really in my view unlikely,” said Wisbey.

If the gold exploration business was a professional sport, then an up-and-coming junior miner has quickly and quietly made the all-star team.
A whirlwind series of announcements started in April when West Red Lake announced its intention to acquire the Madsen Gold Mine from Pure Gold Mining. WRLG agreed to pay $6.5 million in cash, issue 28,460,000 common shares and grant a 1.0% secured Net Smelter Royalty as consideration for the acquisition, as well as up to US$10.0 million in deferred payments. The acquisition was court-approved in late May.

The company announced the appointment of Shane Williams as President and CEO, succeeding Tom Meredith, who became Executive Chairman. The company also announced that Duncan Middlemiss joined as an independent director.

As the Chief Operating Officer at Skeena Resources from 2020 to 2023, Williams played a pivotal role in advancing the past-producing Eskay Creek gold mine in B.C. towards a restart. From 2013 to 2019, Williams held various leadership positions at Eldorado Gold, culminating in his role as Senior Vice President overseeing Canadian and Greek operations. In June the company announced that it completed the acquisition of the Madsen Gold Project through the acquisition of all of the outstanding shares of Pure Gold Mining Inc.

It’s clear that Giustra and Sprott have high expectations for the Madsen. When the takeover was fully executed, they announced that Tony Makuch was going to occupy the next seat at the table.
Makuch has over 35 years of mining industry experience, is the CEO and Director of Discovery Silver Corp and was previously President, CEO and Director of Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd.
During his five-year tenure as CEO of Kirkland Lake, Mr. Makuch led the transformation of the company, with annual gold production increasing from 315,000 oz to over 1,400,000 oz, the market capitalization of the company increasing from approximately C$1 billion to over C$13 billion and Kirkland’s share price increasing over 530%. These milestones were achieved through two successful acquisitions, industry-leading operational performance and significant exploration success and ultimately culminated in Kirkland’s merger with Agnico Eagle Mines Limited in 2022.
Prior to joining Kirkland, Mr. Makuch was President and CEO at Lake Shore Gold Inc., from 2008 until its acquisition by Tahoe Resources Inc. in 2016, when he became the Executive Vice-President and President of Canadian Operations.

IAMGOLD says progress on the much anticipated, and long awaited Côté Gold Project continues at a healthy pace, as they took another step forward with the official grand opening of their Timmins bus terminal and warehouse on Tuesday, July 18.
A sizeable crowd gathered at the renovated west end building for the occasion, which included many dignitaries, company personnel, community leaders, and other stakeholders.
Côté Gold Vice President and General Manager Brian Wilson told the crowd that the terminal is expected to be in operation for 18 years or so, the projected life of the mine, and added that the company is anticipating pouring gold in the first quarter of 2024.
“Its exciting times, we can see the finish line in front of us now,” he said.
“When we start pouring gold, we’re slated to be the second largest gold mine in North America.”
Another landmark development is the fact that the mine site will use fully autonomous vehicles.
“We’re the first mine in Ontario to do that, and we’re running fully autonomous drills on the mine site –we’re the first mine in Canada to do that,” said Wilson.
“We’re looking to push the boundaries of mining in Ontario.”
Regarding the bus terminal, of which there is a similar facility located in Sudbury, Wilson spoke to MiningLife about their use.
“We use them as sort of the central spots to bring people to the mine site. So employees come into the Sudbury bus terminal, or the Timmins bus terminal, go through security, get on the bus, then off to the mine,” he said, noting around 52 percent of the site’s workforce are from either the Sudbury or Timmins areas, which isn’t surprising given the geographical location being roughly midway between the cities on Highway 144.
Wilson also elaborated on some of the exciting progress that has occurred thus far in 2023.
“We started mining in the open pit in January, and really, that was taking over from The EPCM Group,” he said, as the company continues to rely less on outside contractors.
“By the end of August we should be in the whole pit.”
Wilson said the other major development in 2023 has been the process plant.
“The HPGR(high pressure grinding rolls) went in just about two months ago. So we’re building right now, aggressively, and we’re seeing lots of change at the mine site on a dai-
As exciting as the current projections are, expansion is still a possibility in the nearby Gosselin Zone. “Just like any gold mine, we continue to diamond drill in the area, trying to expand out that ore body. Back in February, we had announced another strike out there in the Gosselin Zone, and we’re having a heavy look at it and we continue to drill. Its a little ways out, but we’re watching it very closely.” Wilson was excited to discuss the autonomous vehicle operations. “Its very, very interesting watching these things drive around the mine site,” he said.
“It gives us lots of capability, and now its about learning the systems and maximizing the fleet. We’re happy with it right now, its running as its supposed to, but we’re still learning.”
CAT constructed the vehicles, and IAMGOLD was forced to be patient. “It was a long wait time, along with the electronics that support the autonomy, I think its between 8 months and a year, so the orders were put in quite some time ago,” said Wilson.
At full production, there will be 23 or so autonomous trucks moving around the site, along with 6 drills. A full control room oversees the operations and communications. He said the company is still adding manpower, as hiring for the mill is ongoing.
“We just started a night shift a few weeks ago, as we were running just a day shift which was really about the camp limitations.”
The IAMGOLD workforce currently on site is around 264, then in September and October when they start gearing up into full production, the employee number will rise to 540 or so for the majority of the mine life. Wilson said approximately 250 contractors will be on site at any given time.
While New Gold’s Rainy River Mine is turning out more gold, the company prefers to shine a spotlight on its substantial efforts around water management.
In a message to investors and community stakeholders, the company says managing water as a resource is increasingly being recognized as a significant global challenge. “This challenge intersects with other pertinent issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, Indigenous rights, values, and interests of the communities in which we operate and human rights. As an active member of the Mining Association of Canada, New Gold supports the Towards Sustainable
and Thunder Bay, accumulated additional water onsite. Throughout 2022, the operations teams took a coordinated and holistic approach to manage the water stored onsite. A key component of this approach was increasing the rate of water treatment, to increase treated discharge flows into the Pinewood River. Maximizing the treatment potential resulted in over three times the water treated in 2022 in comparison to 2021. On the production side, 2023 is proving to be a stellar year so far. “We had another excellent quarter, delivering gold equivalent production of 102,374 ounces, a 45% increase over the prior year period,” said Patrick Godin, President & CEO.
Mining (TSM) Water Stewardship Policy Framework, and in 2023, our goal is to achieve a AAA rating for the TSM Water Stewardship Protocol.”
To support the AAA rating, New Gold is building a company-wide Water Governance Framework to establish transparent governance to key water management activities such as water balance modelling, water risk assessment and mitigation, and water reporting.
Between 2021 and 2022, the Rainy River region experienced significant precipitation during the fall and spring which resulted in regional flooding throughout the area. The Rainy River Mine also experienced onsite flooding, which resulted in rapid mobilization of the operational teams to manage the flows. Through careful management, Rainy River Mine was able to manage the flooding event without any unauthorized discharges to the environment.

Today, Equipment World maintains its role as a material handling, storage, and packaging systems specialist, but it has expanded its product offering and has established a very strong construction specialities division. It prides itself on its 50-year commitment to “great value and great service” to its ever-growing client base across the province and throughout Canada.
Equipment World was established by Peter Knudsen, who, after seeing similar facilities in other cities, recognized the potential for a local company specializing in material handling and warehousing products in Thunder Bay. With the help of business partner Jim Sutton and some investors, Equipment World opened its doors on April 17, 1973, striving to provide better and safer ways to move, store and distribute materials. Six months later, the company had outgrown its first home and moved to a much larger location within the city.
Peter was born and raised on a farm in Pass Lake, Ontario, 50 kilometres east of Thunder Bay. He moved to Thunder Bay at 15 years old for high school, and subsequently after graduation, worked at various jobs including becoming part of a lake freighter crew, a restaurant manager, then settling into the banking business. Eventually, an opportunity arose to take a job with an industrial supply company. His years of experience as an accounts manager with the financial institution and a decade of experience working with the company, Peter Knudsen ventured onto the entrepreneurial stage, opening the doors to Equipment World Inc. Eventually the company would grow beyond the
borders of Northwestern Ontario and be able to service practically every business sector, including industrial, commercial, manufacturing, institutional, government and remote communities.
“Obviously there was opportunity in the market for this type of strategy ” Lyle Knudsen says, pointing to the success the company has enjoyed over the past 50 years. Lyle is the current president of the company and son of Peter.
Equipment World started selling (and occasionally renting) forklifts in the ‘70s – and in fact, it became the second-oldest Toyota forklift dealer in Canada in 1976. After completing his post-secondary education and working outside of Equipment World for a multi-national supply company for several years, Lyle joined Equipment World in 1987. “Working outside of the family business really expanded my thinking in terms of the possibilities for what was our fairly small family business at the time,” Lyle says “I also was meeting customers and forming relationships that I would be continuing on with later when I joined Equipment World.” At the time Lyle joined Equipment World in 1987, as a territory sales rep, he was 1 of 10 employees.
Peter saw that the material handling industry wasn’t developed in Northern Ontario as in other centres and he changed that. Perhaps the most significant challenge the company faced during its initial stages was to convince customers that a need for specialists in the field of material handling existed,” he explains. “A big part of the challenge was to educate the customers who were used to dealing with businesses that utilized material handling equipment as a sideline versus us, who promoted it as our main line”. Once a small business in a 1,500 square foot building, on a back street in Thunder Bay, Equipment World has outgrown its location and is now surpassing a need for over 40,000 square feet, within two facilities in Thunder Bay’s industrial hub. “We’ve now been 44 years in our current location ”, says Peter Knudsen.
In 2017, we completed the acquisition of a local competitor, who focused on full line rentals. We have since expanded our rentals division to offer products and services, from DIY applications through to the heaviest of industrial applications. Our ever-expanding rental fleet now includes thousands of units available for short and long-term applications to support our customers throughout all Northern Ontario.
After 13 years of success in the Northwest, Equipment World expanded into Northeastern Ontario by opening the doors to its second division in Sudbury in 1988.
The division in Sault Ste Marie was later established in 1990. Aaron Wise is the General Manager of the Sault Ste. Sault Ste Marie moved to their existing location on Drive-In Road in 2001 and in 2008, the Sudbury location moved to its’ current 20,000 square foot flagship facility on Lorne Street,” says Lyle Knudsen. Now with our full-service facilities in strategically placed hubs, Equipment World has a large footprint in Northern Ontario and is well positioned for continued growth and sustainability.
“Equipment World currently employs 120 full time employees, which is 117 more than the company started out with ” jokes Lyle. Despite the changes, Lyle says, Equipment World has never strayed from its focus. “We’ve maintained our specialization philosophy, but we’ve since taken our solution selling approach to other areas and industries. We’ve evolved by addressing a full array of industries, geographical diversification and we’ve improved ourselves through the ongoing commitment to training for all our personnel ”. Lyle attributes the success of the company to a TEAM concept in all areas, and the ability to offer a full-service approach to give customers the most efficient and effective solutions to their requirements.
Peter, who is now enjoying retirement, is proud of the highly developed workforce within the company structure. As he now watches more from the sidelines, Peter is pleased to see his succession plan in action. The company continues to build momentum as his son Lyle now directs the company along with their TEAM of department managers at each location.
Along with their highly qualified TEAM, Equipment World has established long standing relationships with many of their vendors. Examples of this are Toyota Forklift, which Equipment World has represented since 1976, Genie Industries since 1982, Rousseau Metal since 1983 and SCN Industrial since 1982. “The long-standing relationships we have with many of our vendors has led to friendships beyond just business,” says Lyle. “Along with this, we have established a very strong network of fellow dealers from across North America who we can call upon as a resource or for assistance anytime.” It is the company’s ability to diversify from its grass roots heritage that allows Equipment World to continue to enjoy growth in a very challenging economy. “Where we once specialized and focused primarily on the industrial sectors within Northern Ontario, we have since diversified into all sectors ”. In 2017, Equipment World grew tremendously when they acquired a local rental house, called A-Z Rentals. “The company rented smaller equipment and tools, as well as event rentals, and we were historically focused on larger equipment, so there wasn’t much overlap,” says Lyle. “There was also a 26,000-square-foot building which would allow us to amalgamate the three locations in Thunder Bay where we had equipment stored. In addition, we were able at that point to purchase a

building construction (and services their equipment). We’re a one-stop shop in that way, and we also do mobile servicing with 25 mobile service vans, from the Manitoba border to the Quebec border – everything from preventative maintenance to complete overhauls,” says Lyle.

In addition to the rental division being housed at 1185 Roland Street, Equipment World has also added a full training classroom for operation of forklifts, aerial lifts, working-at-heights and a full host of other industrial training, which is also offered off site to accommodate customer needs. “In the ‘80s, we expanded from shelving and material handling to other building interior systems,” says Lyle, “and at this point we began assisting customers and contractors in the design of building interiors, warehouses, loading areas and other construction specialities. One thing led to another and now it’s one of our strengths. We have full AutoCAD capabilities, with fulltime designers and installers at all our locations and hundreds of projects completed in any given year. Examples of specialty projects include lockers rooms and mine dry installations; gun storage for law enforcement; and storage systems in offices, art galleries and museums. This means that Equipment World partners with the general contractors for the scope of their building design, and rents equipment to the contractors during

Our TEAM saw a need for event rentals in Thunder Bay & surrounding areas. It’s been hectic and the rental division in particular, can sometimes be organized chaos, but we have great people and that’s been a huge part of our success,” says Lyle. “I can say that during every step, the journey has been very exciting and rewarding and the future looks bright.”
Peter Knudsen couldn’t be any prouder with where the company has come today. Peter, who is now in his mid 80s, loves to watch the business continue to grow. He is especially proud that his son, Lyle has been a large part of the companies’ growth and success, and that both of his grandchildren now play a part in the family business. “He drops in regularly and is very interested in how we’re doing, and he likes to say hi to the crew,” says Lyle.
As with Lyle having grown up in the business, starting from the early age of 9 years old, so it has been

There are many larger repetitive recipients, to name a few, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation, Confederation College, Lakehead University, Wake the Giant Music Festival, Ribfest (in support of Our Kids Count), Coldest Night of The Year, RFDA, and Habitat for Humanity. However, Equipment World also supports many local athletes & sports teams, animal rescues & shelters, food programs, school initiatives, and various community events. The list goes on, and on.
“This year is unique”, says Bolton. “As we enter our 50th year in business we have a goal to donate over $50,000.00. One of our events this year involved a charity BBQ in support of Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay, which occurred on May 25th. We were proud to provide a $10,000.00 donation through our efforts. They do amazing work in our community, and we wanted to support that initiative in a big way.”

Although Equipment World spends a significant amount of effort contributing to charity work, not all events hosted are to raise funds for charities. There are certain events put on by the company that are purposed to encourage staff involvement and improve the company morale and TEAMwork. Some event invites are extended to family, friends, work peers, and business associates alike. It has been tradition since the beginning that Equipment World hosts a summer gathering, and Christmas social to encourage staff to get out and have fun together. “It’s about bringing together friends and family to enjoy a fun day, it builds great community among us all.”
No matter which way you turn, there seems to be an Equipment World employee actively involved in a variety of events and associations dedicated to making their communities a better place to live. A common trait that is evident in all they do.
Ernie Ukrainec, Technical Sales Manager, has worked with Equipment World since 1979 and has contributed to many departments within the company over the years. He has always had a passion for racing, and the need for speed. Ernie who raced in the 80’s and 90’s went on to win the track championships in his class 7 years in a row. He raced at many tracks over the years including the former Riverview Raceway, as well as the dirt racing circuit throughout the Northern USA. Equipment World has always seen importance in supporting their employees in areas of their interest, so this was a perfect opportunity for Equipment World show their support. Ernie Ukrainec carried Equipment Worlds’ logo on his car for over 15 years. This support has continued in recent years as well, with Doug Belanger proudly bearing the Equipment World logo on his 1600 HP Top Fuel drag car, as he clocked many
winning times at tracks in Canada and the US. Most recently we have a new entry on the circuit with TEAM Henny/Equipment World Racing. Fred Henny and his pit crew will proudly represent our brand on the dirt track this year.
Not only is racing a great opportunity to show support for their involved employees, but it is also a great after work, extra curricular for other staff to enjoy. Sports have a wonderful way of bringing people together, especially if there is a familiar face competing. In Summer 2022, Equipment World hosted a staff night at the brand-new Thunder City Speedway in Thunder Bay. This brought the families together - young and old - to enjoy a night of fun.
“I started in May of 1997 as an outside sales, account manager, East to develop new business opportunities in the eastern division of the District of Thunder Bay and the District of Cochrane”, says Dave Siczkar, who is the company’s longest standing business account manager. In a quick chat with Dave, we can learn just how essential different forms of communication are when providing customer service.
By meeting face-to-face or even over a quick telephone conversation, we can learn so much more about our customers’ needs. Yes, technology can be extremely helpful in certain situations, but going the extra mile to visit customers on-site, can help us better understand the environment and recommend appropriate product and installation. While Dave enjoys doing his rounds by visiting customer sites, he also accommodates for those who would rather chat an alternate way.
“I fully understand the need to blend the old ways, with the new ways of communicating with our valued customers. Advancement in technology stops for no one. We must adapt ”, says Siczkar.
“My favourite aspect of the job is the unique variety of business and people that I have had the privilege of meeting over the last 26+ years. This also resulted in presenting many unique products in relation to solving the material handling requirements of our customers, with many complex solutions that would meet their varied needs ”, says Siczkar. Having Dave as a part of our TEAM for the last 26 years, has ensured that we never lose focus of the value of face-to-face. He is always

Dave spoke about the impact of COVID-19 within the company. “With the onset of COVID-19, our business strategies had to adapt to the mandated restrictions placed on us by the government and industry. Being an essential service, we stayed in constant communication with our customers via phone, txt, and e-mail. When required, on-site visits were provided with all the necessary precautions being taken as per government protocols. Now we are back to semi normal…. I think.”
When asked what sets Equipment World above the rest, Dave believes our mission, and employees are to thank for that. “Equipment World brings together a vast array of product specialists to help with providing material handling solutions to its’ vast customer base. Without the dedication and commitment by these individuals, Equipment World would not be the leader in the material handling industry we are today here in the north ” summarizes Siczkar.
Equipment World’s sales department sells the first unit, but the service & parts departments sells the repeats by ensuring customers continue to come back yearafter-year.
“In the scope of our Service & Parts Department, we are our own largest service customer with 1000’s of rental units which require parts, maintenance and regular servicing to ensure our Rentals customers receive late model, trouble-free equipment solutions for their projects.
Service & parts have always been and remain two of our strong suits. We’ve always believed that to play the long game, value-added service becomes one of the most important strategies,” stated Lyle.

The recent pandemic most definitely forced some companies who had not made the leap to the virtual world, to quickly do so to ensure they stayed relevant. Fortunately, Equipment World had already made the leap into the world of e-commerce, having our product library and availability online. While we do provide the online catalogue, we also see the value in providing the physical copies as well, upon request. For example, many of our customers purchasing departments prefer

JP Brisson is the parts manger at the Sudbury location. “When I started with Equipment World back in 2001, I had indicated to Lyle Knudsen that I wanted to become THE forklift guy in Northern Ontario. With the help and support of a great family-owned company such as Equipment World, I believe that we are now known, not just in Northern Ontario but in all the forklift industry as the people you can contact if you can’t find it anywhere else.”
“Experience is just as important as training when it comes to safety. Attending a training class, with an instructor who has been in that industry and used the equipment and having all the knowledge from the manufacturers they represent behind them, provides a more detailed, well rounded, and believable training experience which will keep everyone safer.” Wihlidal explains.
Recently we had a change of guard in our SSM location, seeing Kevin Kelly, a long-time safety trainer retire, and Colten Tourigny take over the role. It’s wonderful seeing a new generation step up to the plate and understand the importance of safety within every work setting. Tourigny is no rookie though, he has been teaching safety for years and has already expanded some course offerings at our SSM location.
Bringing things full circle is our Safety Training Division. What started as a need to have our own staff trained to work safely, became an opportunity that we have replicated throughout Northern Ontario. With 3 locations providing safety training, we have the North covered. Students have the option for in-house training at one of our facilities or to have our Safety Trainer provide training on the customers’ site.
Although many companies have gone to online training, we firmly believe there is no better experience than a hands-on approach. This allows both the instructor and student to be fully engaged in the course, resulting in more knowledge and confidence when entering the work environment. Blair Wihlidal, certified safety trainer in Thunder Bay, has been with Equipment World for 27 years. After receiving his BSc from Lakehead University (Physics Major), Blair joined the TEAM in the warehouse “learning the ropes ”. He then progressed to inside sales/rentals, tech, and service writer. Training has been a part of Blair’s job title for approximately 20 years but started out as only a part time need. Every year, that need grew until finally it became a fulltime job over the past 10 years.
Mike Kapanen has been with their Sudbury location since 2011. “Knowledge is the power to doing things the right way safely ”. How can we assure ourselves we are doing it in a safe manner if we don’t have the proper training behind us? The importance of good training will help workers to develop and maintain effective hazard control activities; it is a proven and successful method of intervention.
Complaisant workers are a huge factor when it comes to equipment incidents. Kapanen adds “It is their responsibility to make certain not to hurt themselves or anyone in the process of getting the job done. Kapanen says “Last year at the Sudbury branch I trained over 1000 people; it’s a great feeling to know that I’m doing my part to help these people work safer at their place of employment.” When it comes to safety, Kapanen sums it up this way “If you’re not Learning, you’re not Living.
In Thunder Bay, the demand for training was so high Equipment World had to seek out more talent to meet the demand. We were fortunate enough to find the perfect fit in Jordan Roos, a long-time Safety Trainer, who wanted to return home to Thunder Bay from a Southern Ontario rental house. He brings a lot to the TEAM, including warehouse organization, safety, and construction knowledge.
All 3 location provide forklift, skid-steer, aerial work platform, and working at heights training. Specialized training courses such as chainsaw training are available at select locations.
Bobcat Sightings in Northern Ontario Equipment World became an Authorized Bobcat Dealer in late 2016, servicing the Thunder Bay and Algoma districts. Between the two territories, Equipment World covers servicing needs from Upsala to Elliot Lake and everything in between. Bobcat Equipment was in high demand once the former local dealer had closed shop a couple years earlier after being the dealer in the area for over 30 years. It had come full circle, in fact, when Equipment World’s original founder, Peter Knudsen, had worked for and sold Bobcat for the former dealer in the mid 60s.
“We had reached out to Bobcat about 6 years prior to inquire about taking on the brand,” says Jon Soares, Bobcat Sales Manager. “At the time, they were not seriously looking for another dealership for the district. Once we had reached out again a few years later, they were ready to explore expansion. They recognized high demand for the Bobcat equipment in the Thunder Bay District and there was currently no dealership to fill this demand. Thus, Bobcat of Thunder Bay was born.”
Bobcat is one of the larger names in the world of skid steers and compact equipment. “The final decision of pursuing Bobcat was really a no-brainer for us, when dealing with a brand of that magnitude.
Equipment World started out with 10 pieces in the first year they had the Bobcat line to over 120 in a total of 6 years. “The tractor line has been a great addition to Equipment World’s Bobcat line” says Soares. “It has enabled us to connect with a completely different market sector we hadn’t had much experience with before. Given the sheer volume of homeowners with acreage out there and customers with hobby farms, the range of customers that can benefit from the tractor line is truly endless.”
This year while our crew attended the ConEXPO show in Nevada, L-Ion electric & autonomous equipment was the focus for Bobcat. “The refined design and technology on these new machines are second to none. Gone are the days when you would sit in a track loader, and it felt like you were in an awkward tank. You now feel like you’re in a high-end automobile and can operate all day every day. I’m excited to see what the future brings for the Bobcat line and the new technologies to come.” -Jon Soares
What do the next 50 years hold for Equipment World and the material handling industry? Embracing new technologies will be a requirement to evolve and we’ve already seen a massive shift from traditional machinery and operation to fully electric compact construction equipment and high voltage material handling equipment. This shift is already a reality that requires continuous training and support for our sales, parts, and service teams as well as substantial investment from the company.
Some things will see rapid change while others will remain the same. Showing up to work with drive, passion, and the willingness to make something great happen every day are the driving factors of our employees and the glue of our company’s Circle of Commitment; committing to respect, responsibility, integrity and innovation between employees, customers, suppliers, and communities.

On June 7th, Synterra Security Solutions was honored with the Canadian Mining Expo 2023 Indigenous Business Award at the Gala Dinner & Northern Ontario Mining Awards Night. Members of Synterra’s First Nation Partners and owners were on hand to accept the award. In his acceptance speech, Vice President Mark King thanked and gave credit to their Indigenous Partners and Employees for their hard work and dedication in making their company a continued success.
After more than 12 years of successful business, Synterra has quickly become the top option for providing security services to mining, airport and energy projects across all of Northern Ontario. Synterra Security Solutions LP was formed in 2011 and jointly owned by Naicatchewenin, Kingfisher Lake, Wunnumin Lake First Nations and Canadian Security Management. They currently have over 200 security guards across Northern Ontario with an Indigenous workforce of over 40% and are a certified Living Wage Employer.
Northwestern Ontario is becoming a prominent employment hub in the mining industry. The region has advanced sites for exploring critical minerals like lithium, graphite, copper, and platinum group metals. This positions the region as a leader in mineral production. Several gold mines are already operational, with several expected to start soon. Impala Canada’s Lac des Iles mine, near Thunder Bay, is Canada’s only standalone palladium mine.
Equinox Gold began operations at Greenstone Gold Mines five years ago, expecting to employ around 1,000 workers from diverse sectors. They prioritize Indigenous representation, and collaborate with nearby Indigenous communities and Confederation College to develop multi year training strategies. The college’s programs not only prepare students for immediate job opportunities but also for long-term careers. This enables individuals to begin careers in roles such as flagger or truck driver, and later receive training to transition into more permanent positions in different areas of the mine, including administration and apprenticeships.
Confederation College, Greenstone Gold Mine and MTW Employment Services received funding last year to train 90 Heavy Equipment Operators. The goal was to create a skilled workforce to meet the growing demand in the mining sector. Students underwent pre-employment activities, including theoretical learning and worklife balance tips before completing 75 hours of training on excavators,
front-end loaders, bulldozers, and haul trucks. The program was a success with 84 out of 90 participants completing the training within 6 months. Remarkably, 74% of them found employment within two weeks.
In 2023, the college administered the Mining Potential program in partnership with the Mining Industry Human Resources Council. This included an eight-week training period, followed by three weeks of hands-on experience at Barrick’s Hemlo Gold Mine, focusing on underground diamond drilling with Boart Longyear. Successful students received a college certificate of completion, certificates from MiHR, as well as training in Surface Common Core, Underground Diamond Driller Common Core, First Aid/CPR, Confined Spaces, and WHIMIS/OHSA.
Confederation College, Northwestern Ontario’s largest Trades Training institution, offers post-secondary, apprenticeship, contract training, and dual credits, foster-
ing highly qualified personnel development in 11 approved skilled trades.
The college also offers postsecondary programs in fields like Automotive, Heavy Equipment, Welding, Manufacturing, varying Engineering Technician specialties, Computer Programming, and Civil and Environmental Technician, all crucial to the mining industry. Impala Canada has partnered with the college to help support its development and recruitment of a talent pipeline for these programs and enable students to seamlessly transition from the classroom to the workplace.
Confederation College is playing a crucial role in preparing a skilled workforce for the mining sector through effective partnerships with mines, organizations, and communities. By offering programs backed by key industry players, the college is actively shaping the future of mining while benefiting local communities.
