Celebrates its 40th Anniversary
he High Desert Museum opened in May 1982, the vision of Donald Kerr who wanted to create a place to immerse guests into a portal of learning. The High Desert Musuem brings together wildlife, cultures, art, history and the natural world to convey the wonder of North America’s High Desert. The Museum is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, is a Smithsonian Affiliate, was the 2019 recipient of the Western Museums Association’s Charles Redd Award for Exhibition Excellence and was a 2021 recipient of the National Medal for Museum and Library Service.
A FEW FUN FACTS:
• Otters, Western Pond turtles, eagles, burrowing owls and porcupines are a few of the wildlife natives you will meet
at the High Desert Museum. • The permanent exhibits By Hand Through Memory, shares the Plateau tribes’ culture, and Spirit of the West, takes you on a journey of settling Central Oregon • Visit the 1904 Miller Family Ranch and explore the log cabin, play games and more. • There are changing exhibits throughout the year, including Imagine a World now to September 25, 2022. • The Museum has workshops, events, kids camps and special programs throughout the year. • Enjoy lunch at the Rimrock Café and find a gift or souvenir at Silver Sage Trading.
