What a difference a year makes. We thank God for the miracle of the vaccine! A year ago, we were all sheltering! Now we are wrangling over whether we will be back to normal in 45 or 90 days! Happily, we are seeing jets in the air, cars on the road, and we’re eating lunch with our friends again. Our feature article about the Peachtree City Library starts on page 6. Before long the restrictions will be lifted and we’ll be back to normal. As of now we still have reduced hours and social distancing. After reading about all of the assets that our library offers, we believe our readers will have even more reasons to visit. It is truly a treasure for our city! We are blessed with a great publishing team with talents in every area that it takes to make a high-quality magazine. We are fortunate to work with them. Thank you to our advertisers for making this publication possible. Please visit them soon. Charlie & Anna Nelson, Publishers

BECOMING PEACHTREE CITY LIBRARY A Story of Volunteerism and Community Spirit
W
By Sherri Smith Brown
alk into Peachtree City Library and you will find a community. Every age, every interest, every purpose finds joy in going to the library. This is a library built by people who love libraries: lovers of books and information, paid professionals and volunteers alike. Located in the City Complex, the unofficial town center of Peachtree City, Peachtree City Library is a landmark all its own. Surrounded by City Hall, Drake Field, Lake Peachtree, and All Children’s Playground, the library sits solidly buzzing with community spirit and friendliness. Every resident knows where the library is. Before the COVID-19 era, the library hummed with people reading periodicals, browsing new books, enjoying a puppet show in the children’s area, or an author’s chat in the community room. Lively conversations with personnel and volunteers at the book return and check counters and quiet, interesting chats with librarians in the stacks were the white noise of the library. Peachtree City Library is so much a integral part of this community that it is hard to recall the days when it was not here or when it served in a different location and capacity. But not that long ago, the library was just a dream of a few residents and city officials.
[“Dear me, how I love a library.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, Author] Back in the early history of Peachtree City, a bookmobile traveled the road between the Flint River Regional Library in Griffin and the new town in Fayette County. Its once a week visit was the only library service for the community. Residents would line up at the traveling library that stopped at the old city administration building on Willow Bend Road to acquire their weekly supply of novels and magazines. By 1973, however, a group of local citizens who wanted something more than a weekly bookmobile began a campaign to house a public library in town. “I remember getting a call asking me to form a library committee,” says former Peachtree City resident Tutt Cawthorne (now Hoy). “Bob Bivens, who was president of Garden Cities, the developer of Peachtree City at that time, thought the town needed a library and said Garden Cities would help us.” One of the first actions of that first committee—consisting of Cawthorne, Geri Cowan, Phil Colston, Dave Satterthwaite, and Jenny Ellis—was to go to the City for help in incorporating. Then Mayor Howard Morgan and the city council directed the city attorney, at city expense, to get the volunteer group registered as a non-profit corporation with the State of Georgia. On May 7, 1973, Peachtree City Library, Inc., DBA Friends of the Peachtree City Library (FOL), was officially incorporated with a goal of bringing library services to Peachtree City. >> history: PEACHTREE CITY LIBRARY There were 95 original members of Friends of the Peachtree City Library. The members held their first organizational meeting on July 31, 1973, and approved the organization's by-laws. Then FOL elected Tutt Cawthorne, president; Virginia B. Ellis, vice president; Geraldine M. Cowan, secretary; and David B. Satterthwaite, treasurer. These folks spent the next year volunteering their ideas, time, and enthusiasm to start a groundswell of community support for a library in Peachtree City. They all realized what a library could mean to the success, growth, spirit, and pride of the community. A library would be a place to gather, a place to research, a place to read and learn. FOL approached Garden Cities, and the developer agreed to give the group a one-year lease on space to house the library in the old municipal building located on the library’s current property on Willow Bend Road. After that one year, FOL would have to pay rent on the space. FOL also began a fundraising drive to buy library furnishings. “I don’t think many people know this,” says Cawthorne, “but Garden Cities helped us significantly in getting the library off the ground. One way was that Garden Cities would sell license plates for the front of cars. They donated the proceeds from those sales to Friends of the Library so we could furnish the library with shelves, tables, and chairs. Our books came from the Flint River Regional Library System.” On October 8, 1974, Peachtree City Library opened its doors as a branch member of Flint River Regional Library System. It had 4,713 used and new books on its shelves, all of which came from the regional system. When the year’s lease was almost up, FOL members went to Mayor Morgan and the City Council to see if the City would approve taking over the operation of the library. On January 12, 1976, an ordinance was established making the library a department of Peachtree City with a city appointed board of trustees. The library was officially a city department and functioned under city rules. City tax dollars paid for operational functions of the library, such as personnel, furniture, and utilities. The library remained a part of the Flint River Regional Library System, receiving state tax dollars to pay for books. It also was part of the county system, allowing it to share books with the Fayette County Library under the discretion of the county board of directors.
At first, library services were minimal and part time. The first Librarian, Jennie Pyron, worked alone several afternoons a week with backup help from Willard Bryant. When Pyron retired in 1976, Bryant stepped into her position. As library patronage grew, additional staff and open hours were added. Peachtree City resident Mary Jean Tortorello Allen started volunteering at the library and was eventually hired as a parttime employee in 1979. Shortly thereafter, Bryant decided to retire and Allen was named Librarian and later Library Manager, a position she would hold for the next three decades. (See MT Allen Spotlight, this page below.)
[“Libraries are not made, they grow.—Augustine Birrell, Author] MT Allen expertly managed the library as it maneuvered through three growth moves—moves that were a response to the growth of the town itself. The library’s first 10 years witnessed a rapid development of Peachtree City. The construction of Glenloch Village was fast doubling its size. A high school, junior high, and new elementary school were built. It was apparent that the library needed to expand its capacity to keep up with the town; but first, it had to make a move. In 1982 the library moved from the original Willow Bend building into a space at Aberdeen Shopping Center that had been previously occupied by Peachtree City Development Corporation (PCDC), the developer of Peachtree City, as well as its predecessor, Garden Cities. From this odd-shaped and rather crowded space, the library provided its services to the community as it began the task of building a new facility on the Willow Bend Road property. Made possible by a state grant through the Flint River Regional Library System, this brand new 10,000-square-foot facility opened on July 15, 1987. Five years later on November 3, 1992, Fayette County voters approved a 1% Special Use Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) for the construction and equipping of the new Fayette County Library in Fayetteville. The terms of the referendum included a ceiling of $4 million. Funds in excess of the $4 million would be disbursed to the remaining municipalities on a pro rata basis for improvements in their respective library facilities. As its share, Peachtree City received $428,001 to use for a 10,000-squarefoot expansion that doubled the size of the library and included the addition of a lower Continued on page 8.
MT Allen Steering the Expansion
Mary Jean Tortorello Allen understood the importance of volunteerism. An early resident of Peachtree City, she volunteered at her church and at Piedmont Fayette Hospital once it was built. She served as a President of the Kiwanis Club and held other positions in Peachtree City organizations—but the volunteer project she took on that changed her life was the Peachtree City Library. MT, as she was known to everyone, was a native of Auburn, New York, who moved to Peachtree City with her husband Glen and three children in the early 1970s. She began volunteering at the library in its very early days and was hired as a parttime employee in 1979. Shortly thereafter, Allen was named Librarian and later Library Manager, a position she would hold for the next three decades. Over the years, MT Allen would become the face of Peachtree City Library. Her enthusiasm, outgoing personality, and overwhelming community spirit was an asset to the library’s growth up to her retirement 28 years later in 2007. During her nearly three decades at the library, she oversaw the library’s substantial physical expansion, and she instigated many of the services and programs that library patrons enjoy today.

level with public meeting rooms. After this expansion was complete in 1995, Mayor Bob Lenox and the City Council appointed a volunteer Library Committee to determine where the remaining funds should be spent. The Library Committee designated close to $200,000 for technology projects, including the first automated catalog system and the first local area network (LAN) for the library. The Library Committee disbanded in 1996 and was replaced by a volunteer, Peachtree City appointed Library Commission with goals that were long-term. In 2000, the library greatly expanded it resources when it became a member of Georgia Library PINES (Public Information Network for Electronic Services) through its membership with Flint River Regional Library System. A program of the Georgia Public Library Service, Georgia Library PINES is the online public library automation and lending network for currently 300 libraries and affiliated service outlets in 52 library systems covering 146 counties (52 of the 61 library systems in Georgia). PINES creates a statewide "borderless library" that provides equal access to information for all Georgians. Georgians with a PINES library card have access to materials beyond what is available on their local shelves and enjoy the benefits of a shared collection of 10.6 million books and other materials that can be delivered to their home library free of charge. Even with all the past two decades of construction, the physical library space was having difficulty keeping up with library services. Barbara Chapman, a Peachtree City mom who had graduated from McIntosh High School, decided a first-class city like Peachtree City needed a first-class library. As a member of the Library Commission, she spearheaded a bond referendum in 2003. Peachtree City voters approved the $4.9 million bond referendum for an 11,000-square-foot addition, as well as a complete renovation of the library’s main floor. The conceptual design, by Leo A. Daly, was funded through the Library Commission, using up most of the remaining SPLOST funds from 1992. (See Barbara Chapman Spotlight, p.9). During this construction, the library once again moved to temporary quarters— 8 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | SPRING • SUMMER 2021 |

this time at 2011 Commerce Drive North, formerly Gold’s Gym. On October 31, 2005, the new and improved Peachtree City Library building opened to critical acclaim, appearing in Library Journal’s annual Architectural Issue in 2006. This final expansion preceded the retirement of library manager MT Allen in 2007.
[“Libraries are where it all begins.” —Rita Dove, Poet] Before MT Allen stepped down, she stepped back in 2005, turning over the Library Administrator position of the Peachtree City Library to Jill Prouty, who had been Library Technology and Training Manager since 1998. Led by Prouty for the last 16 years, the library has grown thoughtfully into its space, experiencing continued growth in services and programs. According to its own mission statement, Peachtree City Library “strives to be one of the most customer oriented, information savvy, and technologically advanced public libraries in the state of Georgia.” In addition, the Library stipulates that “it will work towards developing an exhaustive collection for all age groups, covering all subject matters of interest in a variety of formats to meet the needs of the citizens of Peachtree City and Fayette County.” Peachtree City Library is consistently the busiest library in the Flint River Regional Library System and one of the busiest in the Georgia PINES system. It also is ranked in the top 20 busiest libraries in the state of Georgia. Peachtree City Library still depends solely on the City of Peachtree City for its operating budget. The library’s materials budget is supplemented with state funds through Flint River Regional Library System, which amounts to roughly $12,000 to $15,000 a year. The library continues to receive significant support in many forms from Friends of the Library, including approximately $6,000 for the annual Vacation Reading Program as well as funds for the purchase of books, furniture, and equipment. The library offers a collection of more than 90,000 items in a variety of “Like us”” on the

>> history: PEACHTREE CITY LIBRARY Barbara Chapman Advocating for a Better Library
“It wasn’t just because the library didn’t have a changing table for my kids,” laughingly says Barbara Chapman, a McIntosh graduate who moved back home to Peachtree City in the early 2000s and became “a squeaky wheel for a better library.” Barbara saw an ad in the local paper asking for a volunteer to fill a recently vacated seat on the Library Commission. She says her main reason for applying was to upgrade the facility. She felt that people had worked hard to establish the library, but that a first-class city like Peachtree City needed a firstclass library. “I was 30 years old,” says Barbara. “I was passionate and outspoken and had a vision for what I thought the library needed to be. My father has always been an advocate for libraries and had helped a lot of poorer communities establish a library. My thought was that this is Peachtree City. We are an affluent community. We should have a library that reflects that!” Barbara began to attend the Library Commission meetings where a lot of conversation was about buying computers. “I knew we needed computers,” says Barbara, “but I wanted us to go big. We needed millions. The entire library needed a facelift and much more space.” Library Commission members went to then Mayor Steve Brown and the City Council, who agreed to let the public decide the issue with a bond vote. Barbara spearheaded a drive to promote the bond. She spoke before various area organizations. She had
signs made encouraging people to vote “yes” to the bond, and she placed them around town with her kids in tow. “I worked really hard,” recalls Barbara, “but friends tried to prepare me for the fact that the bond may not pass. It was just a year or so after 911, and people were still upset and worried. Many people thought we shouldn’t increase taxes.” However, the bond did pass. Peachtree City voters approved the $4.9 million bond referendum for a complete renovation of the main floor and an 11,000-square-foot addition that included a children’s wing and the wing that overlooks the lake. “The whole experience showed me that people really can make a difference,” says Barbara. “People built the library, and they had the power to change it dramatically. Libraries are equalizing. The library serves everyone. I felt that it was well worth the time I spent.”
formats, including print, audio books, music CDs, DVDs, ebooks, and electronic resources, including wi-fi access throughout the facility. Its total circulation in 2019 was 360,287. Almost as important as the collection are the educational and entertaining programs for all age groups that the library offers throughout the year. Current programs include: Storytime, Babytime, Vacation Reading Program, Morning and Evening Book Clubs, and Writers’ Circle. Prouty says that the busiest time of year at the library is summer when the Children’s Reading Program and the Adult Reading Program are in full swing. For instance, in pre-pandemic Summer 2019, there were over 27,000 active users, both adult and juvenile, a month and an average circulation of 32,000 per month. Dedicated for children from the very beginning and built with funds from the 2003 bond, the Children’s Wing of the library is a happy and busy place to be all year, but especially during the summer. (See Children’s Wing Spotlight, p.10). The Writers Room is the location for visiting author lectures, writing workshops, and other literary events that are part of the Adult Reading Program. Two other rooms in the Peachtree City Library are dedicated to two founders of

Peachtree City. The first is the Joel Cowan History Room, which preserves the history of Peachtree City. (See History Room Spotlight, p. 12). The second is the Floy Farr Room. Established in 1995, this room is dedicated to Peachtree City founder, civic leader and banker Floy Farr. It is available for civic groups and other meetings and serves as a Peachtree City voting poll location. Computer access has been integral to the library since the early 2000s. The reference area of the library offers patrons about 15 computers with high-speed internet access and a quiet, comfortable space in which to work. Several other computers as well as internet access at work tables are available throughout the rest of the library. Around 15,000 patrons tap into the library’s internet annually, while an average of 60,000 use its wireless access. A more recent technological innovation at the library that is yet to be fully appreciated due to COVID is the new theater located downstairs. The screening room has 18-person stadium seating and a flat-screen TV with the latest technology in projection. The screening room is intended for library sponsored film viewings offered to the public. For instance, Harry Potter birthday celebrations might include viewings of Harry Potter films in the theater.

The Children's Wing Nourishing Life-Long Learners One of the busiest, most colorful, and joyful sections of the library is the Children’s Wing. A dedicated addition built from the 2003 bond, the Children’s Wing offers child-size tables, chairs, bookcases, computers, and a book collection geared to the youngsters of Peachtree City. A glass walled room within the wing hosts programs for children of all ages. Janice Dukes was the first Peachtree City Library Youth Services Librarian and is celebrating 20 years in that position this spring. She says the children's department has seen much change in those 20 years, including hundreds of programs and events and thousands of new books and materials. “The children's department is the nursery of the library,” says Janice. “It nourishes the youngest of our community to become lifelong learners.” The library encourages young children to develop an interest in reading and learning through a monthly comprehensive schedule of programs for them and their parents. Programs for children include a weekly “Storytime” for pre-schoolers and Janice’s favorite program, “Babytime,” for infants up to two years old. The Children’s Summer Reading Program includes weekly performers, age specific activities, and prizes for completing summer reading goals.

Joel Cowan History Room Preserving the City's Past For history buffs, a special place in the library is the Joel Cowan History Room, named in honor of Peachtree City founder, former mayor, and long-time resident Joel Cowan. Contained within its space are archives of Peachtree City history, including documents; publications (newspapers, area magazines); maps, photographs, and other visual materials; and artifacts, which are preserved and made available for research by appointment. Twenty-year Peachtree City Library librarian veteran Rebecca Watts, who co-authored Arcadia Publishing’s history series Images of America: Peachtree City, has been involved in organizing the History Room since about 2008. “Whenever we come across something interesting that pertains to Peachtree City, we say,
‘that might be good for the history room!’” says Rebecca. Now retired, Rebecca continues that organizing task, along with other FOL volunteers, including chairman Lee Eltzroth, a retired professional archivist, who brings much expertise and experience to the project. Friends of the Library recently received a large grant from an anonymous donor specified for use for the Joel Cowan History Room as well as its related website and social media presence. Some of the historical records in the Joel Cowan room concerning the early history and planning of Peachtree City can be found online in the Digital Library of Georgia. Coordinated by Watts, the collection, "Peachtree City: Plans, Politics, and People, 'New Town' Beginnings and How the 'New

Art Initiative Art and Books—What More Do We Need? Local artist Honey Corbin and former Peachtree City Librarian Rebecca Watts saw a need to expose local artwork and artists to the area residents and collaborated to do just that. Started in 2016, while Rebecca was still employed at the library, the Library’s Art Initiative provides the community an ongoing venue for visual art. Rebecca, who has continued the collaboration in her retirement, says, “While this cultural amenity is certainly a plus for the city, it also serves as a key exhibit opportunity for local and regional artists.” Three area artists' associations—Fayette Society of Fine Art, Newnan-Coweta Art Association, and Peachtree City Photography Club—have permanent display space in the library with a fourth display area reserved for artists invited by co-curators Corbin and Watts. The two curators enjoy attending regional art events in search of new artists to bring to the
library. Exhibits, which hang on grids throughout the library, are changed out six times per year. Prior to the pandemic, the library hosted artist receptions on "Art Sunday" as a celebration of local art for each new exhibit—a practice the Art Initiative administrators hope they are one day able to revive. Art—just another reason to go to the Peachtree City Library.
[“Well-run libraries are filled with people because what a good library offers cannot be easily found elsewhere: an indoor public space in which you do not have to buy anything in order to stay.” —Zadie Smith]

Computer access has been integral to the library since the early 2000s. Continued from page 9.
A library project that is very visual and makes a big splash is the Art Initiative located on grids throughout the library. This initiative provides curated shows from local and regional artists. (See Art Initiative Spotlight, p.14). Peachtree City Library has a strong FaceBook page presence with interesting reading and library information and online events, such as Cozy Top Book Club, What’s On Jill’s Nightstand, Teen Book Club, and OB the Storytelling Dog.
[“Without libraries what have we? We have no past and no future.”—Ray Bradbury, Author] Since the days of a once-a-week bookmobile, Peachtree City Library has steadily and pro-actively moved forward. Dedicated staff moved it forward. Developers and city officials moved it forward. Residents moved it forward. All of these people understood the joys and comfort experienced by having a hometown library that not only met the needs of its residents but exceeded their expectations time and time again. Peachtree City Library, like all libraries, is not a finished product. It does and will require numerous hours from personnel and volunteers to maintain the high standards it has set for itself. You do not get to be one of the best by standing still. Friends of the Library continues to need volunteers and support in order to
establish and maintain the library’s many programs and initiatives. In addition to events and activities held in conjunction with the annual Friends of the Library Week and for National Library Week, FOL regularly funds book purchases and processing and miscellaneous supplies. It also funds the following library activities: the Art Initiative, the Joel Cowan History Room, the Children’s Reading Program, and the Adult Reading Program, which consists of authors’ lectures, writers’ workshops, and tracking summer books read. Contact Friends of the Library organization through the library, on its Facebook page, or at its website at ptclibraryfriends.org. Due to the ongoing pandemic, Peachtree City Library has established reduced hours and is only sponsoring virtual events. Visit the library website at peachtree-city. org/125/Library or its Facebook page for updates as pandemic conditions improve. Last of all, remember—
["Libraries are only good if people use them, like books only exist when someone reads them.”—Nicholas Meyer, Writer and Director]

PANDEMIC Homebuying C
OVID-19 seemed to change everything, and that includes real estate in Fayette and Coweta Counties and the surrounding areas. REALTOR Kay McInroe is now assisting buyers and sellers with different priorities than they had before the pandemic. Sellers are approaching Kay McInroe because their current homes aren’t working well for a life in quarantine. In some cases, kids are now schooling at home, while the parents are also working from home. Suddenly a three-bedroom house isn’t large enough. Or a work from home professional has lost their office to the kids. “Or their house is where they don’t have adequate internet or cell coverage,” said Kay McInroe with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Georgia Properties. In some cases it’s not just staying at home to work that makes people choose a move. “My clients are saying, ‘We may not be able to go on vacation. So we need to be in a place like Peachtree City. ’ You could go for walks around the lake. It’s like a little vacation retreat.”
How has COVID-19 changed the market?
This Kay McInroe listing sold during the pandemic to buyers who appreciated both its lake view and pool— providing a staycation when vacation wasn’t an option.
Kay recently sold a home that had exactly what the buyer needed: a basement ready to finish for office space and a pool, “Homes with pools sell in two minutes, because everybody wants the instant gratification of a backyard oasis.” Besides finding homes that are more of a staycation, Kay McInroe has had several buyers say that their vacation budget is going to their new home. One of her recent buyers found that they were able to get a new home in Peachtree City for less payment than their previous home in Sharpsburg. That was both because interest rates are low, and because they put their entire cruise budget (all three that got canceled due to the pandemic!) into the purchase price of their home. “My client said, ‘How can I not win? I got the school district I wanted, I got the neighborhood I wanted with a lower mortgage.’”
Kay McInroe Cell 678-570-0717 • Office 770-487-8300 •
PCM Spring Summer 2021 MAP.indd 1
In order to help her client win, Kay had to be very swift with helping them make an offer. Kay McInroe works her network of REALTORS to find properties before they even hit the market in order to serve her clients. “There were multiple offers, but we got it the first day.” That is clearly a trend. Sellers who need to find something bigger or more pandemic-ready are able to sell incredibly quickly. Kay also sees many of her listings sell in one day. Kay McInroe says that buyers look locally because of the amazing school districts and the safety of the communities. Even so, she’s asking them different questions: “What does your new normal look like? When you’re all working from home, do you have the space you need? Will you have space for your aging parents to move in?” Kay’s clients are prioritizing how to make their space work best for their families. Georgia Properties

SHOP LOCAL AND STAY SAFE
hopping local and supporting the shops, businesses, and merchants of our town has always been a priority in Peachtree City. Although it has been a tough year for shoppers and retailers alike, Peachtree City stores have managed to provide residents with what they need when they need it. Whether you are looking for goods or services, local shopping in Peachtree City is convenient, friendly, and safe. It is also abundant so there is no need to go any place else. Peachtree City stores run the gamut from upscale to bargain. You also will find everything from national chain stores to family-owned boutiques. There are numerous stores that carry a little of everything for everyone. Mostly, however, there is an array of specialty stores carrying clothing, books, jewelry, gifts, shoes, greeting cards, floral, outdoor apparel, toys, kitchen wares, golf carts, and more. Whatever you need is available in Peachtree City. If you are shopping for services, that is abundant, too. Groceries, nail salons, barbers and hair stylists, dry cleaners, accounting, insurance, music, computer, eye care, and all types of repair shops are just a few of the services you can shop for in Peachtree City. Peachtree City’s retail areas make it easy to shop by Peachtree City’s number one method of transportation—the golf cart. Many shopping areas have marked golf 26 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | SPRING • SUMMER 2021 |

cart parking. The Avenue and Braelinn Shopping Center even have charging stations for convenience. Peachtree City also enjoys a variety of thrift stores and consignment shops where you will find everything from estate sale furniture and housewares to gently used clothing, toys, and kitchen items. Peachtree City yard sales are frequent and easy to locate by using the Peachtree City App on your Smartphone and the Peachtree City Magazine website at peachtreecitymagazine.com. We have all learned to adapt in these pandemic times. Call or visit a store’s website, Facebook page, or Instagram page for its pandemic hours and social distancing requirements. Many stores limit the number of in-store shoppers at one time, have set up six-feet spacing, and require masks. Many more employ curbside pickup and online strategies. A favorite shop may have closed its doors, but others have popped up in shopping areas all over town. All have discovered new ways to serve its customers and make shopping a pleasant, yet safe, experience. Check the the pull-out map in this magazine for the location of all village shopping areas in Peachtree City. d “Like us”” on the

customers with a personal service and brand knowledge in a broad array of shoes and merchandise.
In 1973 Smith sold his portion of the business to Davis and headed south just as Fayette County was beginning to explode economically.
Tony Davis reminisced recently about how the family took a chance years ago on a startup company—they took on a new line of running shoes known as Nike! That story is the essence of what enables Smith & Davis to keep so many happy customers today in a time when so many brick and mortar stores are failing. Continuing to keep that leading edge on shoes and fashion, the family has added some “younger buyers” to make sure that they continue to introduce new customers while keeping their older customers.
hen Ronald Davis and Fred Smith bought out Jud’s Trading Post in 1965, they were both already successful retailers selling carpets and home furnishings. They named their new venture “Smith & Davis”—a clothing store specializing in work clothes, shoes, and dress apparel for the mostly rural surrounding communities. The store was located on the then, not too busy, two-lane Highway 54 running between Fayetteville and the new town of Peachtree City.
Smith & Davis Clothiers has been in its present location since 1988. It is still a family run business with Ron Davis, his sons Tony and George, and his daughter Beth, working every day. The family is a team that provides their 28 | PEACHTREE CITY MAGAZINE | SPRING • SUMMER 2021 |

New Stores Keep Coming to The Avenue
ven during the pandemic, The Avenue Peachtree City continues to attract new retailers, bringing a dynamic mix of shopping experiences to the area. Opening March 2020 at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sephora is a beauty shopping happening. The store carries an unrivaled selection of makeup, skin care, hair care, fragrance, and more from classic and exclusive brands, including Fenty, Beauty by Rihanna, Drunk Elephant, and Sephora Collection. Shoppers can book makeup and skincare service and more. Popping up on November 30, 2020, was lululemon, a Vancouver, Canada,
company that makes technical clothing for yoga, dancing, and running for both men and women. The store is known as a seasonal pop up. Local sales and interest in the brand determine whether or not the company commits to a permanent store in the shopping center. Shoppers who know this brand were extremely excited to see it enter the Peachtree City market—so come on shoppers, help lululemon stay! Owned by Peachtree City natives Jennifer, Leah, Caroline, and Liz Barnett— Barnett & Co. opened its doors December 12, 2020. The store encourages shoppers “to find their own personal style” by bringing a
unique shopping experience to all who enter. Barnett & Co. carries collections of clothing, baby items, home decor, and gifts that have been hand selected and thoughtfully collected by the Barnett ladies themselves. Opened in February 2021, Lovesac is the newest store at The Avenue Peachtree City. Lovesac is a high-end home furnishings company that specializes in a patented modular furniture system called Sactionals. Using only two pieces, customers can arrange and rearrange their furniture to fit their home or outdoor space perfectly. Lovesac also sells Sacs—its original, changeable foam-filled comfy chair.

estaurants in Peachtree City and the people who own, manage, and work in them are our neighbors. They are an integral part of our community—a location for birthday parties and special occasions or a regular, weeknight stop after a school or sports event. They bring a steadiness and comfort to our daily lives. Our restaurants represent the many diverse ethnicities who live in this town and introduce us to those ethnicities that do not. In Peachtree City, you will find restaurants representing numerous cuisines—Italian, French, Mexican, Chinese, Lebanese, Indian, Thai, South African, and more. Of course, you also will find traditional Southern dining—homestyle, meat and three’s as well as contemporary Southern cuisine served with warm, Southern hospitality. Peachtree City restaurants mirror the restaurant trends across the nation—superfoods in a poke bowl, healthy shakes, farm-to-table foods, fusions, organic, grass-fed meats, and handed down family-inspired recipes. Food is served however you like—sit-down dining, cafeteria style, carryout, and delivery by the restaurants themselves or various food delivery services. More than a year after the start of the pandemic, Peachtree City restaurants are operating in some fashion, while continuing to make dining a safe experience for us. Many have reorganized their in-dining layouts to accommodate social distancing guidelines. Where possible, restaurants have added lots of spread out, relaxed outdoor seating. Many restaurants also have adjusted their hours, enhanced their online take-out ordering procedures, and implemented delivery within the area. Please support the restaurants in Peachtree City as much as possible. They bring us our comfort food. They add diversity to our community. They are our neighbors.

ongtime residents of Peachtree City remember a time where there were only a couple of homegrown restaurants in town—mostly serving home style cooking. Over the years, as the population of Peachtree City and the surrounding area grew, so did its diversity. People of all ethnicities moved here, establishing restaurants and bringing opportunities for diverse dining. Today in Peachtree City, you will find restaurants representing numerous cuisines—Italian, French, Mexican, Chinese, Lebanese, Indian, Thai, South African, Greek, and more. Older ethnic restaurants in town continue to flourish and have become traditional places to gather for weekday dinners and celebratory events. The Gonzalez family has been delivering authentic Mexican food for decades at Ranchero Bar & Grill. Ant and Dee Murphy started Georgia Shrimp Company in 2005, basing their menu around foods from their South African roots. Chin Chin Chinese Restaurant Peachtree City with its delicious Chef’s and Lunch Specials has long been known as one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area, while Pascal’s Bistro has been serving “delicious American cuisine with a French accent” for more than 20 years. Italian food is plentiful in Peachtree City with such old time favorites as the G GPeachtree City Magazine & App facebook pages

Newer to the Italian choices is Positano Pizza Napoletano in The Avenue Peachtree City, an authentic Neapolitan pizza restaurant, serving pizzas, salads, antipasti, gelato, espresso, and desserts. If you are looking for some award winning Lebanese and Mediterranean cuisine, try the family owned Beirut or its sister restaurant Pita Street Food. For Greek, there is Athena’s Pizzeria and Greek Cuisine and Zoe’s Kitchen. Star of India, Ginza Japanese and Sushi, and Charm Thai Cuisine have garnered loyal followings in Peachtree City and among the visiting film production crowd, while AZN Sandwich Bar, Asian Cook Seafood and Steakhouse, Poke Bar, Red Rice Bowl, and Viet’s Cuisine have brought new and exotic cuisines to the Peachtree City options. Many of these cuisines are served in comfortable, authentic atmospheres. Sit at a Sushi bar or dine al fresco. Watch as your pizza is placed in a wood-fired oven. Enjoy the show as your entree is grilled at your table or mixed in a molcajete right in front of your eyes. Diversity in people. Diversity in food. It’s all a part of living in Peachtree City. d

utsiders call Somerby Retirement Community a great place for seniors to live, but those seniors who live there will tell you that it is more like living on a cruise ship. Most of that is due to Somerby’s Director of Lifestyle, Hawaiian born Tupua Ainuu. Residents say Tupua is what makes them think they are living on the SS Somerby Cruise Ship. Every month and everyday Captain Tupua is at the helm. He is the source and provider of a continuous and interesting list of activities and fun events for Somerby residents. Regular Happy Hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays allow everyone to meet and mingle, and no major holiday goes by without turning it into a party. For instance, instead of a Mardi Gras float parade, Somerby held a Mardi Gras golf cart parade— enjoyed by both the people riding the golf carts and those who waved from the curb. Then in March, everyone had a great time at the St. Pat’s bash complete with games and a visit by real Irish dancers provided by the internationally known Kelly Porter Irish Dance Academy. Of course there is more, including quiet activities like crafts and walks on the outdoor trail built just for Somerby. All and all, Captain Tupua’s dedication to providing residents with unique and entertaining activities makes life at Somerby like taking a cruise. “Like us”” on the

WARM WEATHER TIPS! Spring and Summer mean blue skies and the urge to get outdoors. Here are some tips to keep you healthy! ■ Use Lots of Sunscreen Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Protect yourself especially between 10am and 4pm when the sun’s UV (ultraviolet) rays are strongest by applying sunscreen with UVA & UVB protection and an SPF of 30 or higher. Children should wear a waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply it every 2 hours when at the pool or beach. ■ Protect Your Eyes When outdoors, wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of ultraviolet A and B rays. ■ Stay Hydrated How much water you should drink varies for each person, depending on your diet, weight, level of exercise, and a variety of other factors. In regular temperatures, drink at least three liters per day. Drink more in the summer!

CLOSET RE-DUX
T
V shows like “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” and “Get Organized with the Home Edit” inspire us to rethink our closet space. Spring and summer is a great time to do just that and a perfect excuse to get rid of tired winter clothing and things we have not worn for several years. But how do we get started? First, take everything out of your closet and put it on your bed? Yes. Really. This is the advice given by most organizational experts. It makes you make a decision on every item in your closet. It also gives you a solid goal to finish the project—especially if you want to sleep in your bed any time soon! Now look at your empty closet. Do you need to replace old shelves. Do you want nice baskets or bins for items? Do you need a complete closet re-design? Is this something you can do yourself? Do you need to call in a professional? A custom design can transform your closet into a clutter-free space. Cabinets, storage shelves, and hanging rods will organize every piece of clothing you own. Corner shelves will maximize your storage space and provide just the right place for purses, extra pillows, blankets, and other bulky items. Once you have determined what kind of closet you want, it is time to purge.
The experts say to make three piles: items to keep, items to donate or sell, and items to throw away. Look at each item. If it “brings you joy,” as Marie Kondo says, place it in the items to keep pile. If it does not fit or does not bring you joy, place it in the donate or sell pile. If it is too worn for anyone to wear, discard it. Try applying the “six month rule”—have you worn it in the past six months? Will you wear it in the next six? After completing the three piles, take your donations to thrift stores like Wellspring, Clothes Less Traveled, and A Better Way Bargains in Peachtree City. If you want to sell your better quality clothes, place them in area consignment stores or sell them on internet sites like Poshmark. When it is time to organize your closet, consider these things. Put your winter clothes into bins on the top shelf of your closet. Then, in fall, switch everything out. Keep your current summer clothes on easy-to-reach rods and shelves. Organize them by type and color of clothing, placing them on proper hangers for shirts and pants. Now, go out and enjoy your summer. Your closet re-dux is done! | www.peachtreecitymagazine.com | SPRING • SUMMER 2021 | 39

THE REAL LIFE CENTER A Helping Hand in Troubled Times Real Life Center’s leader Cathy Berggren best explains their mission, “Life is filled with uncertainties. People from all walks of life face difficulties; no one is immune…Some people who come our way simply need a little food or help paying a bill…Some need help getting back on their feet after fleeing domestic violence or suffering a major illness.” The Real Life Center’s program is designed to help bridge a gap and to connect families with vital resources. We encourage families to set year-long goals to promote long-term stability. Volunteers and contributions are needed to meet the increased number of requests for help. Whether you have financial resources to give, talents to share, or time to devote, your contribution is needed. http://reallifecenter.org/; 770-631-9334
